The Account of the Shraddha that Falls to the Rakshasa
Verse 1 (skanda.6.187.1)
sūta uvāca caturthe divase prāpte tato yajñasamudbhave ṛtvigbhiryājñikaṁ karma prārabdhaṁ tadanaṁtaram
Suta said: When the fourth day of the sacrifice arrived, the ritwiks thereafter began the sacrificial work.
Verse 2 (skanda.6.187.2)
somapānādikaṁ sarvaṁ paśorhiṁsādikaṁ tathā paśorgudaṁ samādāya prasthātā ca vyadhārayat
All the drinking of soma, and likewise the ritual immolation of the animal — the Prastota priest took hold of the animal's rectum and held it [for the homa].
Verse 3 (skanda.6.187.3)
ekāṁte sadaso madhye homārthaṁ dvijasattamāḥ tasminvyākulatāṁ yāte brāhmaṇaḥ kaścidāgataḥ
In a corner of the midst of the assembly, for the sake of the homa, O best of brahmins — while confusion arose there, a certain brahmin came in,
Verse 4 (skanda.6.187.4)
yuvā tatra praviṣṭastu māṁsa bhakṣaṇalālasaḥ tato gudaṁ paśordṛṣṭvā bhakṣayāmāsa cotsukaṁ
a young man, eager to eat meat; then, seeing the animal's rectum, he ate it eagerly.
Verse 5 (skanda.6.187.5)
etasminnaṁtare prāptaḥ prasthātā tasya saṁnidhau bhakṣamāṇaṁ samālokya taṁ śaśāpa tataḥ param
Meanwhile the Prastota arrived near him, and, seeing him eating, then cursed him thus:
Verse 6 (skanda.6.187.6)
dhigdhikpāpasamācāra homārthaṁ yadgudaṁ dhṛtam tattvayā dūṣitaṁ laulyādyajñavighnakaraṁ kṛtam
"Shame, shame upon you, sinner in conduct! What was held for the homa you have defiled through greed, causing an obstruction to the sacrifice."
Verse 7 (skanda.6.187.7)
ucchiṣṭena mayā homaḥ kartavyo naiva sāṁpratam rākṣasānāmidaṁ karma yattvayā samanuṣṭhitam
"I shall not now perform the homa with what has become leftover through you — this deed you have committed is the deed of rakshasas."
Verse 8 (skanda.6.187.8)
tasmāttvaṁ mama vākyena rākṣaso bhava mā ciram
"Therefore, by my word, become a rakshasa without delay."
Verse 9 (skanda.6.187.9)
etasminneva kāle tu hyūrdhvakeśo'bhavaddhi saḥ raktākṣaḥ śaṁkukarṇaśca kṛṣṇadanto'tibhairavaḥ
At that very moment, he became so — his hair standing on end, his eyes red, his ears pointed, his teeth black, most terrible,
Verse 10 (skanda.6.187.10)
lamboṣṭho vikarālāsyo māṁsamedovivarjitaḥ tvagasthisnāyuśeṣaśca cāmuṇḍākṛtireva ca
his lips hanging, his face distorted, devoid of flesh and fat, only skin, bone, and sinew remaining, resembling Chamunda in form.
Verse 11 (skanda.6.187.11)
sa ca viśvāvasurnāma pulastyasya suto muniḥ maṁtrapūtasya māṁsasya bhakṣaṇārthaṁ samāgataḥ
He was named Vishvavasu, a sage, son of Pulastya, who had come to eat the mantra-purified meat,
Verse 12 (skanda.6.187.12)
vedavedāṁgatattvajaḥ pautrastu parameṣṭhinaḥ taṁ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasākāraṁ vitresuḥ sarvato dvijāḥ
one who knew the truth of the Veda and its limbs, grandson of Parameshthin. Seeing him in rakshasa form, the brahmins trembled on every side.
Verse 13 (skanda.6.187.13)
rākṣoghnāni ca sūktāni jajapuścāpare tathā keciccharaṇamāpannā viṣṇo rudrasya cāpare
Others recited hymns for the destruction of rakshasas; some took refuge in Vishnu, others in Rudra,
Verse 14 (skanda.6.187.14)
pitāmahasya cānye tu gāyatryāḥ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ rakṣarakṣeti jalpanto bhayasaṁtrastamānasāḥ
and others still sought refuge in the Grandsire, and in Gayatri, crying "Protect! Protect!", their minds struck with terror.
Verse 15 (skanda.6.187.15)
so'pi dṛṣṭvā tadātmānaṁ gataṁ rākṣasatāṁ dvijāḥ bāṣpapūrṇekṣaṇo dīnaḥ pitāmahamupādravat
He too, seeing that he himself had become a rakshasa, his eyes filled with tears, wretched, ran to the Grandsire.
Verse 16 (skanda.6.187.16)
sa praṇamya tato vākyaṁ kṛtāṁjaliruvāca tam pautro'haṁ tava deveśa pulastyasya suto dvijaḥ nīto rākṣasatāmadya prasthātrā kopato vibho
Bowing, with joined palms, he spoke this word to him: "I am your grandson, O Lord of gods, son of Pulastya, a brahmin — turned into a rakshasa today by the Prastota in anger, O lord."
Verse 17 (skanda.6.187.17)
jihvālaulyena deveśa paśorgudamajānatā bhakṣitaṁ tanmayā deva homārthaṁ yatprakalpitam
"Through the greed of my tongue, O Lord of gods, not knowing what it was, I ate the animal's rectum, O god, that had been prepared for the homa."
Verse 18 (skanda.6.187.18)
tasmānmānuṣatāprāptyai mama dehe dayāṁ kuru rākṣasatvaṁ yathā yāti tathā nītirvidhīyatām ' tacchrutvā jalpitaṁ tasya dayāṁ kṛtvā pitāmahaḥ pratiprasthātaraṁ sāmavākyametaduvāca ha
"Therefore, that I may regain my humanity, have mercy on my body; let such measures be taken that this rakshasa-state may depart." Hearing his plea, the Grandsire, moved with compassion, spoke this conciliatory word to the Prati-prastota priest:
Verse 19 (skanda.6.187.19)
bālo'yaṁ mama pautrastu kṛtyākṛtyaṁ na vetti ca tasmāttvaṁ rākṣasaṁ bhāvaṁ harasvāsya dvijottama
"This is my grandson, still a child, who does not know what should and should not be done. Therefore, O best of brahmins, withdraw this rakshasa-nature from him."
Verse 20 (skanda.6.187.20)
tacchrutvā sa muniḥ prāha prāyaścittaṁ makhe tava anena janitaṁ deva gudaṁ dūṣayatā vibho
Hearing this, that sage said: "This is the penance owed to your sacrifice, O god, since he, defiling the rectum, has brought this about."
Verse 21 (skanda.6.187.21)
tasmādeṣa mayā śapto yajñavighnakaro mama nāhamasya hariṣyāmi rākṣasatvaṁ kathaṁcana
"Therefore he has been cursed by me as one who obstructs my sacrifice; I shall not withdraw his rakshasa-state in any way."
Verse 22 (skanda.6.187.22)
narmaṇāpi mayā proktaṁ kadācinnānṛtaṁ vacaḥ brahmovāca prāyaścittaṁ kariṣye'haṁ yajñasyāsya prasiddhaye dakṣiṇā gauryathoktā ca kṛtvā homaṁ vidhānataḥ tvamasya rākṣasaṁ bhāvaṁ 'harasva mama vākyataḥ
"Not even in jest have I ever spoken a false word." Brahma said: "I shall myself perform the expiation for the accomplishment of this sacrifice — having given the prescribed cow as fee, and performed the homa according to rule, you withdraw his rakshasa-nature at my word."
Verse 23 (skanda.6.187.23)
so'bravīcchītalo vahniryadi syāduṣṇaguḥ śaśī tanme syādanyathā vākyaṁ vyāhṛtaṁ prapitāmaha
He replied: "Should fire become cold, should the moon become hot-rayed — only then could this word I have declared before you, O great-grandsire, prove otherwise."
Verse 24 (skanda.6.187.24)
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā jñātvā caiva tu niścitam viśvāvasuṁ vidhiḥ prāha tato rākṣasarūpiṇam
Hearing his word, and knowing it to be firmly resolved, the Ordainer then spoke to Vishvavasu, who remained in rakshasa form:
Verse 25 (skanda.6.187.25)
tvaṁ vatsānena rūpeṇa tiṣṭha tāvadvaco mama kuruṣva te prayacchāmi yena sthānamanuttamam

Verse 27 (skanda.6.187.27)

Verse 28 (skanda.6.187.28)

Having said this, Brahma, Grandsire of the worlds, quickly fell silent; and that Rakshasa too thereupon obtained his station as ruler of the rakshasas there.
