The Greatness of Savitri

Chapter 191All chaptersChapter 193

Verse 1 (skanda.6.192.1)

sūta uvāca atha śrutvā mahānādaṁ vādyānāṁ samupasthitam nāradaḥ sammukhaḥ prāyājjñātvā ca jananīṁ nijām

Suta said: Then, hearing the great sound of instruments that had arisen, Narada went forward to meet her, recognizing his own mother approaching.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.192.2)

praṇipatya sa dīnātmā bhūtvā cāśrupariplutaḥ prāha gadgadayā vācā kaṇṭhe bāṣpasamāvṛtaḥ

Bowing down, wretched, his eyes filled with tears, he spoke in a voice broken with sobs, his throat choked with weeping —

Verse 3 (skanda.6.192.3)

ātmanaḥ śāparakṣārthaṁ tasyāḥ kopavivṛddhaye kalipriyastadā vipro devastrīṇāṁ puraḥ sthitaḥ

for the sake of protecting himself from her curse, so as to increase her anger toward another, Kalipriya, the brahmin, then stood before the wives of the gods,

Verse 4 (skanda.6.192.4)

meghagambhīrayā vācā praskhalaṁtyā padepade mayā tvaṁ devi cāhūtā pulastyena tataḥ param

and, in a voice deep as thunder, faltering at every step: "O goddess, you were summoned by me, and thereafter further by Pulastya —"

Verse 5 (skanda.6.192.5)

strīsvabhāvaṁ samāśritya dīkṣākāle'pi nāgatā

"but, giving way to a woman's nature, you did not come, even at the time of the consecration."

Verse 6 (skanda.6.192.6)

tato vidheḥ samādeśācchakreṇānyā samāhṛtā kācidgopasamudbhūtā kumārī deva rūpiṇī

"Then, by the Ordainer's command, another was brought by Shakra — a certain maiden, born among cowherds, of divine form,"

Verse 7 (skanda.6.192.7)

govaktreṇa praveśyātha guhyamārgeṇa tatkṣaṇāt ākarṣitā mahābhāge samānītātha tatkṣaṇāt

"drawn in through a cow's mouth, by a hidden passage, at that very moment, and brought, O great lady, in that same instant."

Verse 8 (skanda.6.192.8)

sā viṣṇunā vivāhārthaṁ tataścaivānumoditā īśvareṇa kṛtaṁ nāma gāyatrī ca tavānugam

"She was then approved by Vishnu for the marriage; the name 'Gayatri' was given by Ishvara, in likeness to your own,"

Verse 9 (skanda.6.192.9)

brāhmaṇaiḥ sakalaiḥ proktaṁ brāhmaṇīti bhavatviyam asmākaṁ vacanādbrahmankuru hastagrahaṁ vibho

"and it was declared by all the brahmins: 'Let her become a brahmin-woman.' 'By our word, O Brahma, take her hand, O lord.'"

Verse 10 (skanda.6.192.10)

devaiḥ sarvaiḥ sa samproktastatastāṁ ca varānanām tataḥ patnyutthadharmeṇa yojayāmāsa satvaram kiṁ vā te bahunoktena patnīśālāṁ samāgatā raśanā yojitā tasyā gopyāḥ kaṭyāṁ sureśvari

"Thus addressed by all the gods, he then joined himself to that fair-faced one, swiftly, by the rite proper to a wife. What need is there to say more? She was brought into the wives' hall; the cowherd-girl's girdle was fastened at her waist, O queen of gods."

Verse 11 (skanda.6.192.11)

taddṛṣṭvā garhitaṁ karma niṣkrāṁto yajñamaṇḍapāt amarṣa vaśamāpanno na śakto vīkṣituṁ ca tām

"Seeing this reprehensible deed, I came out from the yajna-pavilion, overcome with impatience, unable even to look upon her."

Verse 12 (skanda.6.192.12)

etajjñātvā mahābhāge yatkṣamaṁ tatsamācara gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā tatra maṇḍape dharmavarjite

"Knowing this, O great lady, do whatever seems fitting; go there, or remain — the pavilion is now bereft of dharma."

Verse 13 (skanda.6.192.13)

tacchrutvā sā tadā devī sāvitrī dvijasattamāḥ pramlānavadanā jātā padminīva himāgame

Hearing this, that goddess Savitri, O best of brahmins, became one whose face had wilted, like a lotus at the coming of winter,

Verse 14 (skanda.6.192.14)

lateva cchinnamūlā sā cakrīva priyavicyutā śuciśuklāgame kāle sarasīva gatodakā

like a creeper with its root severed, like a chakravaka bird bereft of her beloved, like a lake whose water has vanished at the time the pure, bright season arrives,

Verse 15 (skanda.6.192.15)

prakṣīṇacandralekheva mṛgīva mṛgavarjitā seneva hatabhūpālā satīva gatabhartṛkā

like the waning crescent of the moon, like a doe bereft of her mate, like an army whose king has been slain, like a devoted wife who has lost her husband,

Verse 16 (skanda.6.192.16)

saṁśuṣkā puṣpamāleva mṛtavatsaiva saurabhī vaimanasyaṁ paraṁ gatvā niścalatvamupasthitām tāṁ dṛṣṭvā devapatnyastā jagadurnāradaṁ tadā

like a withered garland of flowers, like a fragrant cow who has lost her calf — having fallen into the deepest despondency, she came to a state of utter stillness. Seeing her thus, those wives of the gods then said to Narada:

Verse 17 (skanda.6.192.17)

dhigdhikkalipriya tvāṁ ca rāge vairāgyakārakam tvayā kṛtaṁ sarvametadvidhestasya tathāntaram

"Shame, shame upon you, Kalipriya, who bring dispassion into the midst of joy! All this that has happened is your doing, and it is that of the Ordainer as well."

Verse 18 (skanda.6.192.18)

gauryuvāca ayaṁ kalipriyo devi brūte satyānṛtaṁ vacaḥ anena karmaṇā prāṇānbibhartyeṣa sadā muniḥ

Gauri said: "This Kalipriya, O goddess, speaks a mixture of truth and falsehood; it is by this very conduct that this sage sustains his life."

Verse 19 (skanda.6.192.19)

ahaṁ tryakṣeṇa sāvitri purā proktā muhurmuhuḥ nāradasya munervākyaṁ na śraddheyaṁ tvayā priye yadi vāṁchasi saukhyāni mama jātāni pārvati

"I myself, O Savitri, was told long ago, again and again, by the three-eyed one: 'The word of the sage Narada should not be trusted by you, my dear, if you desire the happiness that has come to me, O Parvati.'"

Verse 20 (skanda.6.192.20)

tataḥprabhṛti naivāhaṁ śraddadhe'sya vacaḥ kvacit tasmādgacchāmahe tatra yatra tiṣṭhati te patiḥ

"From that time forward I have never placed faith in his words at all. Therefore let us go there, to where your husband now stands;"

Verse 21 (skanda.6.192.21)

svayaṁ dṛṣṭvaiva vṛttāṁtaṁ kartavyaṁ yatkṣamaṁ tataḥ nātrāsya vacanādadya sthātavyaṁ tatra gamyatām

"having seen the matter for ourselves, we should then do whatever is fitting. It is not right to remain here merely on his word — let us go there."

Verse 22 (skanda.6.192.22)

sūta uvāca gauryā stadvacanaṁ śrutvā sāvitrī harṣavarjitā makhamaṇḍapamuddiśya praskhalantī padepade

Suta said: Hearing Gauri's words, Savitri, bereft of joy, stumbling at every step, made her way toward the sacrificial pavilion,

Verse 23 (skanda.6.192.23)

prajagāma dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ śūnyena manasā tadā pratibhāti tadā gītaṁ tasyā madhuramapyaho

proceeding, O best of brahmins, with a mind gone hollow. Then even the sweetest song seemed to her,

Verse 24 (skanda.6.192.24)

karṇaśūlaṁ yathā''yātamasakṛddvijasattamāḥ vandhyavādyaṁ yathā vādyaṁ mṛdaṁgānakapūrvakam

again and again, like a piercing pain in the ear, O best of brahmins; the very instruments, mridanga and anaka drums foremost, seemed to her like sounds from a fruitless, barren instrument.

Verse 25 (skanda.6.192.25)

pretasaṁdarśanaṁ yadvanmartyaṁ tatsā mahāsatī vīkṣituṁ na ca śakroti gacchamānā tadā makhe

As one shrinks from the sight of a corpse among mortals, so that great and devoted wife could not bear to look, as she went then toward the sacrifice.

Verse 26 (skanda.6.192.26)

śṛṁgāraṁ ca tathāṁgāraṁ manyate sā tanusthitam vāṣpapūrṇekṣaṇā dīnā prajagāma mahāsatī

She regarded the very adornments upon her own body as burning coals; her eyes filled with tears, wretched, that great and devoted wife went onward.

Verse 27 (skanda.6.192.27)

tataḥ kṛcchrātsamāsādya saivaṁ taṁ yajñamaṁḍapam kṛcchrātkārāgṛhaṁ tadvadduṣprekṣyaṁ dṛkpathaṁ gatam

Then, with the greatest difficulty, she reached that yajna-pavilion — as hard to bear the sight of as a prison, entering her field of vision as though entering one.

Verse 28 (skanda.6.192.28)

atha dṛṣṭvā tu saṁprāptāṁ sāvitrīṁ yajñamaṇḍapam tatkṣaṇācca caturvaktraḥ saṁsthito'dhomukho hriyā

Then, seeing Savitri arriving at the yajna-pavilion, the four-faced one at once stood there, his face turned down in shame.

Verse 29 (skanda.6.192.29)

tathā śambhuśca śakraśca vāsudevastathaiva ca ye cānye vibudhāstatra saṁsthitā yajñamaṁḍape

And likewise Shambhu, and Shakra, and Vasudeva too, and whatever other gods were established there in the yajna-pavilion —

Verse 30 (skanda.6.192.30)

te ca brāhmaṇaśārdūlāstyaktvā vedadhvaniṁ tataḥ mūkībhāvaṁ gatāḥ sarve bhayasaṁtrastamānasāḥ

all those tiger-like brahmins, abandoning the sound of Vedic recitation, fell silent, their minds struck with fear.

Verse 31 (skanda.6.192.31)

atha saṁvīkṣya sāvitrī sapatnyā sahitaṁ patim kopasaṁraktanayanā paruṣaṁ vākyamabravīt

Then Savitri, beholding her husband together with his co-wife, her eyes reddened with anger, spoke this harsh word:

Verse 32 (skanda.6.192.32)

sāvitryuvāca kimetadyujyate kartuṁ tava vṛddha tamākṛte ūḍhavānasi yatpatnīmetāṁ gopasamudbhavām

Savitri said: "Is it fitting for you to do this, O you of the most aged appearance — that you have taken to wife this one, born of cowherds,"

Verse 33 (skanda.6.192.33)

ubhayoḥ pakṣayoryasyāḥ strīṇāṁ kāṁtā yathepsitāḥ śaucācāraparityaktā dharmakṛtyaparāṅmukhāḥ

"whose family, on both sides, consists of women beloved only as desired by men, bereft of purity of conduct, turned away from the observance of dharma,"

Verse 34 (skanda.6.192.34)

yadanvaye janāḥ sarve paśudharmaratotsavāḥ sodaryāṁ bhaginīṁ tyaktvā jananīṁ ca tathā parām tasyāḥ kule prasevaṁte sarvāṁ nārīṁ janāḥ parām yathā hi paśavo'śnaṁti tṛṇāni jalapānagāḥ

"in whose lineage all people delight in the ways and festivals of beasts — abandoning their own sisters and even their own mothers, men of that family consort with every other woman promiscuously, just as beasts that drink water eat grass indiscriminately."

Verse 35 (skanda.6.192.35)

viṇmūtraṁ kevalaṁ cakrurbhārodvahanameva ca tadvadasyāḥ kulaṁ sarvaṁ takramaśrāti kevalam

"They produce nothing but filth and urine, and carry burdens — just so, that whole family does nothing but drink buttermilk."

Verse 36 (skanda.6.192.36)

kṛtvā mūtrapurīṣaṁ ca janmabhogavivarjitam nānyajjānāti kartavyaṁ dharmaṁ svodarasaṁ śrayāt

"Having produced only urine and excrement, devoid of any higher purpose in life, they know no other duty than the service of their own belly."

Verse 37 (skanda.6.192.37)

antyajā api no karma yatkurvanti vigarhitam ābhīrāstacca kurvaṁti tatkimetattvayā kṛtam

"Even the outcastes do not perform the despicable deeds that the Abhiras perform — what, then, is this that you have done?"

Verse 38 (skanda.6.192.38)

avaśyaṁ yadi te kāryaṁ bhāryayā parayā makhe tvayā vā brāhmaṇī kāpi prakhyātā bhuvanatraye

"If you truly needed another wife for this sacrifice, was there no brahmin woman renowned throughout the three worlds available to you?"

Verse 39 (skanda.6.192.39)

noḍhā vidhe vṛthā muṇḍa nūnaṁ dhūrto'si me mataḥ yattvayā śaucasaṁtyaktā kanyābhāvapradūṣitā

"You have not married her in vain, O shaven-headed Ordainer — surely you are, in my judgment, a rogue — in that you have taken one bereft of purity, whose maidenhood was already defiled,"

Verse 40 (skanda.6.192.40)

prabhuktā bahubhiḥ pūrvaṁ tathā gopakumārikā eṣā prāptā supāpāḍhyā veśyājanaśatādhikā

"enjoyed by many men before, this cowherd-girl; this most sinful one has arrived here, worse than a hundred common courtesans together."

Verse 41 (skanda.6.192.41)

antyajātā tathā kanyā kṣatayoniḥ prajāyate tathā gopakumārī ca kācittādṛkprajāyate

"A girl born among outcastes is born with her womb already violated; and likewise some cowherd-girl too is born of that same kind."

Verse 42 (skanda.6.192.42)

mātṛkaṁ paitṛkaṁ vaṁśaṁ śvāśuraṁ ca prapātayet tasmādetena kṛtyena garhitena dharātale

"She shall bring down the maternal lineage, the paternal lineage, and the father-in-law's family as well. Therefore, through this despicable deed upon the earth,"

Verse 43 (skanda.6.192.43)

na tvaṁ prāpsyasi tāṁ pūjāṁ tathā nye vibudhottamāḥ anena karmaṇā caiva yadi me sti ṛtaṁ kvacit

"you shall never attain that worship given to the other best of gods — through this act, if there is any truth in me at all."

Verse 44 (skanda.6.192.44)

pūjāṁ ye ca kariṣyaṁti bhaviṣyaṁti ca nirdhanāḥ kathaṁ na lajjitosi tvametatkurvanvigarhitam

"Those who shall perform worship of you shall become impoverished. How are you not ashamed, doing this despicable thing,"

Verse 45 (skanda.6.192.45)

putrāṇāmatha pautrāṇāmanyeṣāṁ ca divaukasām ayogyaṁ caiva viprāṇāṁ yadetatkṛtavānasi

"unworthy of your sons, your grandsons, of the other gods, and of the brahmins too, in what you have done?"

Verse 46 (skanda.6.192.46)

atha vā naiṣa doṣaste na kāmavaśagā narāḥ lajjaṁti ca vijānaṁti kṛtyākṛtyaṁ śubhāśubham

"Or rather, this fault is not truly your own — men under the sway of desire feel no shame, and cannot discern what should and should not be done, what is auspicious and what is not."

Verse 47 (skanda.6.192.47)

akṛtyaṁ manyate kṛtyaṁ mitraṁ śatruṁ ca manyate śatruṁ ca manyate mitraṁ janaḥ kāmavaśaṁ gataḥ

"A man under the sway of desire considers the improper proper, considers a friend an enemy,"

Verse 48 (skanda.6.192.48)

dyūtakāre yathā satyaṁ yathā cauraṁ ca sauhṛdam yathā nṛpasya no mitraṁ tathā lajjā na kāminām

"and considers an enemy a friend. As there is truth in a gambler, honesty in a thief, or friendship in a king, so is there no shame in the lustful."

Verse 49 (skanda.6.192.49)

api syācchītalo vahniścaṁdramā dahanātmakaḥ kṣārābdirapi miṣṭaḥ syānna kāmī lajjate dhruvam

"Fire might become cold, the moon might grow scorching, the salt sea might turn sweet — but the lustful man surely never feels shame."

Verse 50 (skanda.6.192.50)

na me syāddukhametaddhi yatsāpatnyamupasthitam sahasramapi nārīṇāṁ puruṣāṇāṁ yathā bhavet

"This co-wifehood now come upon me would be no grief to me at all, were it as it is for men who take a thousand wives —"

Verse 51 (skanda.6.192.51)

kulīnānāṁ ca śuddhānāṁ svajātyānāṁ viśeṣataḥ tvaṁ kuruṣva parāṇāṁ ca yadi kāmavaśaṁ gataḥ

"that is, if you had taken another wife of good family, of purity, and especially of your own caste. But you have taken one wholly other, though you were under the sway of desire."

Verse 52 (skanda.6.192.52)

etatpunarmahadduḥkhaṁ yadābhīrī vigarhitā veśyeva naṣṭacāritrā tvayoḍhā bahubhartṛkā

"But this is a still greater grief — that this despicable Abhira woman, like a courtesan of ruined character, has been wedded by you, though she already possessed many husbands."

Verse 53 (skanda.6.192.53)

"Therefore I shall go to that place where your very name, O Ordainer, is never even heard — a place fit for the lust-besotted man cast off in shame."

Verse 54 (skanda.6.192.54)

ahaṁ viḍaṁbitā yasmādatrānīya tvayā vidhe purato devapatnīnāṁ devānāṁ ca dvijanmanām tasmātpūjāṁ na te kaścitsāṁprataṁ prakariṣyati

"Since I have been made a laughing-stock, having been brought here by you, O Ordainer, before the wives of the gods, before the gods, and before the twice-born — therefore no one shall now ever perform worship of you."

Verse 55 (skanda.6.192.55)

adya prabhṛti yaḥ pūjāṁ maṁtrapūjāṁ kariṣyati tava martyo dharāpṛṣṭhe yathānyeṣāṁ divaukasām

"From this day forward, whoever shall perform mantra-worship of you, that mortal upon the earth's surface, as is done for the other gods —"

Verse 56 (skanda.6.192.56)

aniketā bhaviṣyaṁti vaṁśe'syā goprajīvinaḥ evaṁ śaptvā vidhiṁ sādhvī gāyatrīṁ ca tataḥ param

"they shall become homeless, living off cattle, in her line." Having thus cursed the Ordainer, and then Gayatri as well, that virtuous one —

Verse 63 (skanda.6.192.63)

tato devagaṇānsarvāñchaśāpa ca tadā satī bhobhoḥ śakra tvayānītā yadeṣā paṁcabhartṛkā

"Together with Svadha and Svaha, ever accompanied by suffering, you shall never again attain the highest happiness, for all time, as you did before."

Verse 72 (skanda.6.192.72)

"And all these brahmins, their minds overcome by greed, who perform the homa even in this despicable sacrifice — where this five-husbanded woman has been installed out of greed for wealth — this word too is declared: they shall become brahmin-like in name only."

Verse 73 (skanda.6.192.73)

"And likewise all the hosts of gods who lend their assistance here, in this fault-ridden, five-husbanded sacrifice —"

Verse 76 (skanda.6.192.76)

saṁtānena parityaktāste bhaviṣyaṁti sāṁpratam dānavaiśca parābhūtā duḥkhaṁ prāpsyati kevalam

"they shall now become abandoned by their own offspring, and, overcome by the demons, shall obtain nothing but suffering."

Verse 77 (skanda.6.192.77)

etasyāḥ pārśvataścānyāścatasro yā vyavasthitāḥ ābhīrīti sapa tnīti proktā dhyānapraharṣitāḥ

"And these four others, established at her side, called the co-wives of the Abhira woman, delighted in meditation,"

Verse 78 (skanda.6.192.78)

mama dveṣaparā nityaṁ śivadūtīpurassarāḥ tāsāṁ parasparaṁ saṁgaḥ kadācicca bhaviṣyati

"ever devoted to hatred of me, preceded by Shiva's messenger — a meeting among themselves shall occur for them at some time,"

Verse 79 (skanda.6.192.79)

nānyenātra nareṇāpi dṛṣṭimātramapi kṣitau parvatāgreṣu durgeṣu cāgamyeṣu ca dehinām vāsaḥ saṁpatsyate nityaṁ sarvabhogavivarjitaḥ

"but they shall never be seen even by any other man on this earth; their dwelling shall forever be upon mountain-peaks, in inaccessible fortresses beyond the reach of embodied beings, deprived of every enjoyment."

Verse 80 (skanda.6.192.80)

sūta uvāca evamuktvā'tha sāvitrīkopopahatacetasā visṛjya devapatnīstāḥ sarvā yāḥ pārśvataḥ sthitāḥ

Suta said: Having spoken thus, Savitri, her mind overcome with anger, dismissed all those wives of the gods who stood at her side,

Verse 81 (skanda.6.192.81)

udaṅmukhī pratasthe ca vāryamāṇāpi sarvataḥ sarvābhirdevapatnībhirlakṣmīpūrvābhirevaca

and, facing north, set out, though restrained on every side by all the wives of the gods, Lakshmi foremost among them —

Verse 82 (skanda.6.192.82)

tatra yāsyāmi no yatra nāmāpi kila vai yataḥ śrūyate kāmukasyāsya tatra yāsyāmyahaṁ drutam

"I shall go to that place where not even the name of this lustful one is ever heard — there I shall go, swiftly."

Verse 83 (skanda.6.192.83)

ekaścaraṇayornyasto vāmaḥ parvatarodhasi dvitīyena samārūḍhā tasyāgasya tathopari

One of her feet she placed upon the mountain's slope, and with the other she mounted, likewise, upon its very summit.

Verse 84 (skanda.6.192.84)

adyāpi tatpadaṁ vāmaṁ tasyāstatra pradṛśyate sarvapāpaharaṁ puṇyaṁ sthitaṁ parvatarodhasi

Even today that left footprint of hers is seen there, a sacred mark removing every sin, set upon the mountain's slope.

Verse 85 (skanda.6.192.85)

api pāpasamācāro yastaṁ pūjayate naraḥ sarvapātakanirmuktaḥ sa yāti paramaṁ padam

Even a man of sinful conduct who worships it becomes freed from every sin and attains the supreme state.

Verse 86 (skanda.6.192.86)

yo yaṁ kāmamabhi dhyāya tamarcayati mānavaḥ avaśyaṁ samavāpnoti yadyapi syātsudurlabham

Whatever desire a man contemplates, and, with that desire in mind, worships it — he undoubtedly obtains it, however difficult to attain it may be.

Verse 87 (skanda.6.192.87)

sūta uvāca evaṁ tatra sthitā devī sāvitrī parvatā śrayā apamānaṁ mahatprāpya sakāśātsvapatestadā

Suta said: Thus the goddess Savitri, established there, taking refuge upon the mountain, having received great dishonor from her own husband —

Verse 88 (skanda.6.192.88)

yastāmarcayate samyakpaurṇamāsyāṁ viśeṣataḥ sarvānkāmānavāpnoti sa manovāṁchitāṁ stadā

whoever worships her properly, especially on the full-moon day, obtains all his desires, whatever his heart may wish, then and there.

Verse 89 (skanda.6.192.89)

yā nārī kurute bhaktyā dīpadānaṁ tadagrataḥ raktataṁtubhirājyena śrūyatāṁ tasya yatphalam

The woman who, with devotion, offers lamps before her, with red-dyed wicks and with ghee — hear now the fruit of that:

Verse 90 (skanda.6.192.90)

yāvantastaṁtavastasya dahyaṁte dīpa saṁbhavāḥ muhūrtāni ca yāvaṁti ghṛtadīpaśca tiṣṭhati tāvajjanmasahasrāṇi sā syātsaubhāgyabhāṁginī

for as many threads as burn in that lamp, and for as many moments as that ghee-lamp continues to burn, for that many thousands of births she shall be blessed with good fortune,

Verse 91 (skanda.6.192.91)

putrapautrasamopetā dhaninī śīla maṁḍanā na durbhagā na vandhyā ca na ca kāṇā virūpikā

accompanied by sons and grandsons, wealthy, adorned with virtue; she shall never be unfortunate, nor barren, nor one-eyed, nor deformed.

Verse 92 (skanda.6.192.92)

yā nṛtyaṁ kurute nārī vidhavāpi tadagrataḥ gītaṁ vā kurute tatra tasyāḥ śṛṇuta yatphalam

The woman, even a widow, who performs a dance before her, or who sings there — hear now the fruit that is hers:

Verse 93 (skanda.6.192.93)

yathāyathā nṛtyamānā svagātraṁ vidhunoti ca tathātathā dhunotyeva yatpāpaṁ prakṛtaṁ purā

in whatever measure, dancing, she moves her body, in that very measure she shakes off whatever sin was committed by her before.

Verse 94 (skanda.6.192.94)

yāvanto jantavo gītaṁ tasyāḥ śṛṇvaṁti tatra ca tāvaṁti divi varṣāṇi sahasrāṇi vasecca sā

For as many living beings as hear her song there, for that many thousands of years shall she dwell in heaven.

Verse 95 (skanda.6.192.95)

sāvitrīṁ yā samuddiśya phaladānaṁ karoti sā phalasaṁkhyāpramāṇāni yugāni divi modate

The woman who gives fruit-offerings, dedicating them to Savitri, rejoices in heaven for as many ages as the number of those fruits.

Verse 96 (skanda.6.192.96)

miṣṭānnaṁ yacchate yaśca nārīṇāṁ ca viśeṣataḥ tasyā dakṣiṇamūrtau ca bhartrāḍhyānāṁ dvijottamāḥ sa ca sikthapramāṇāni yugā ni divi modate

And whoever gives sweet food, especially to women whose husbands are living, before her southern-facing image — he too, O best of brahmins, rejoices in heaven for as many ages as there are grains of rice offered.

Verse 97 (skanda.6.192.97)

yaḥ śrāddhaṁ kurute tatra samyakchraddhāsamanvitaḥ rasenaikena sasyena tathaikena dvijottamāḥ tasyāpi jāyate puṇyaṁ gayāśrāddhena yadbhavet

Whoever performs a shraddha there, endowed with proper faith, with even a single kind of food and a single kind of grain, O best of brahmins — for him too there arises the very merit that would come from a shraddha performed at Gaya.

Verse 98 (skanda.6.192.98)

yaḥ karoti dvijastasyā dakṣiṇāṁ diśamāśritaḥ sandhyopāsanamekaṁ tu svapatnyā kṣipitairjalaiḥ

The brahmin who, facing that southern direction, performs even a single evening worship, with water sprinkled by his own wife —

Verse 99 (skanda.6.192.99)

sāyaṁtane ca saṁprāpte kāle brāhmaṇasattamāḥ tena syādvaṁditā saṁdhyā samyagdvādaśavārṣikī

when the evening hour has arrived, O best of brahmins — by that alone his sandhya-worship is reckoned as properly observed for twelve full years.

Verse 100 (skanda.6.192.100)

yo japedbrāhmaṇastasyāḥ sāvitrīṁ purataḥ sthitaḥ tasya yatsyātphalaṁ viprāḥ śrūyatāṁ tadvadāmi vaḥ

Whoever, as a brahmin, recites japa standing before her Savitri — hear, O brahmins, what fruit shall be his; I shall tell it to you.

Verse 101 (skanda.6.192.101)

daśabhirjjanmajanitaṁ śatena ca purā kṛtam triyuge tu sahasreṇa tasya naśyati pātakam

The sin accumulated over ten births is destroyed by a hundred repetitions; over the three ages, by a thousand — his sin is destroyed.

Verse 102 (skanda.6.192.102)

tasmātsarvaprayatnena camatkārapuraṁ prati gatvā tāṁ pūjayeddevīṁ stotavyā ca viśeṣataḥ

Therefore, with the utmost effort, one should go to Chamatkarapura and worship that goddess there, and offer her especial praise.

Verse 103 (skanda.6.192.103)

sāvitryā idamākhyānaṁ yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyācca vā sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ sukhabhāgatra jāyate

Whoever recites or listens to this account of Savitri becomes freed from every sin and is born to a share of happiness in this world.

Verse 104 (skanda.6.192.104)

etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ yatpṛṣṭo'haṁ dvijottamāḥ sāvitryāḥ kṛtsnaṁ māhātmyaṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ pravadāmyaham

All this I have related to you, as you have asked me, O best of brahmins; what more of Savitri's entire greatness shall I now declare?
