bhartṛyajña uvāca kāmyāni te'dhunā vacmi śrāddhāni pṛthivīpate yaiḥ kṛtaiḥ samavāpnoti martyo hṛdayasaṁsthitam

Bhartriyajna said: O lord of the earth, I shall now tell you the desire-specific (kamya) shraddhas, by performing which a mortal obtains whatever is lodged in his heart.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.219.2)

yo nārīṁ vāṁchate kṣmāpa rūpāḍhyāṁ śīlamaṇḍanām iha loke pare caiva tasyārhaṁ prathamaṁ dinam

O king, one who desires a woman endowed with beauty and adorned with virtue, both in this world and the next — for him the first day of the fortnight is fitting.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.219.3)

That which is chief within the shraddha-fortnight — one who desires an excellent, virtuous, and beautiful daughter should perform the shraddha on the second day, O lord of the earth.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.219.4)

yo vāṁchati naro'śvāṁśca vāyuvegasamāñjave tṛtīyādivase śrāddhaṁ tena kāryaṁ vipaścitā

The man who desires horses swift as the speed of the wind — the wise should perform the shraddha for him on the third day.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.219.5)

yo vāṁchati paśūnmukhyānkupyākupyadhanāni ca caturthyāṁ tena kartavyaṁ śrāddhaṁ pitṛpratuṣṭaye

One who desires excellent cattle and wealth in timber and metal goods — for him the shraddha should be performed on the fourth day, for the gratification of the ancestors.

Verse 6 (skanda.6.219.6)

putrānvāṁchati yo'bhīṣṭānsuśīlānvaṁśamaṁḍanān pañcamyāṁ tena kartavyaṁ sadā śrāddhaṁ narādhipa

One who desires the longed-for sons who are virtuous and adorn the lineage should, O lord of men, always perform the shraddha on the fifth day.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.219.7)

yaḥ śrāddhaṁ vaṁśajairdattaṁ paralokagato nṛpa vāṁchate tena kartavyaṁ ṣaṣṭhyāṁ śrāddhaṁ vipaścitā

O king, for an ancestor who, having gone to the other world, desires the shraddha given by his descendants — for him the wise should perform the shraddha on the sixth day.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.219.8)

One who desires success in the summer and autumn harvests — for him it is proper to perform the shraddha on the seventh day; there is no doubt of it.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.219.9)

ya icchetpaṇyasaṁsiddhiṁ vyavahārasamudbhavām aṣṭamyāṁ yujyate śrāddhaṁ tasya kartuṁ narādhipa

One who desires success in commerce arising from trade — for him, O lord of men, it is proper to perform the shraddha on the eighth day.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.219.10)

navamyāṁ śrāddhakṛnnānā catuṣpadagaṇālla~bhet saubhāgyaṁ roganāśaṁ ca tathā vallabhasaṁgamam

On the ninth day, the performer of the shraddha obtains various herds of four-footed animals, good fortune, freedom from disease, and union with the beloved.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.219.11)

daśamīdivase śrāddhaṁ yaḥ karoti samāhitaḥ tasya syādvāṁchitā siddhiḥ sarvakṛtyeṣu sarvadā

He who, with concentrated mind, performs the shraddha on the tenth day obtains the success he desires in all his undertakings, always.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.219.12)

ekādaśyāṁ dhanaṁ dhānyaṁ śrāddhakartā labhennaraḥ tathā bhūpaprasādaṁ ca yaccānyanmanasi sthitam

On the eleventh day, a man who performs the shraddha obtains wealth and grain, as well as the favor of the king, and whatever else is lodged in his mind.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.219.13)

yaḥ karoti ca dvādaśyāṁ śrāddhaṁ śraddhāsamanvitaḥ putrāṁstu pravarāṁścaiva sa paśūnvāṁchitālla~bhet

He who, endowed with faith, performs the shraddha on the twelfth day, obtains excellent sons as well as the animals he desires.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.219.14)

yo vāṁchati naro muktiṁ pitṛbhiḥ saha cātmanaḥ asaṁtānaśca yastasya śrāddhe proktā trayodaśī

For the man who desires liberation for himself together with the ancestors, and for one who has no offspring — for his shraddha, the thirteenth day is prescribed.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.219.15)

saṁtānakāmo yaḥ kuryāttasya vaṁśakṣayo bhavet na saṁtānavivṛddhayai ca tasya proktā trayodaśī

Should one who desires offspring perform it on this day, his lineage would perish; the thirteenth day is not prescribed for the increase of progeny.

Verse 16 (skanda.6.219.16)

śrāddhakarmaṇi rājeṁdra śrutireṣā purātanī api naḥ sa kule bhūyādyo no dadyāttrayodaśīm

O lord of kings, this is an ancient teaching regarding the rite of shraddha: 'May he too remain of our lineage who does not offer the thirteenth-day shraddha.'

Verse 17 (skanda.6.219.17)

pāyasaṁ madhusarpirbhyāṁ varṣāsu ca maghāsu ca maghātrayodaśīyoge pāyasena yajetpitṝn

In the rainy season and under the Magha nakshatra, kheer together with honey and ghee should be offered; when Magha coincides with the thirteenth day, the ancestors should be worshipped with kheer.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.219.18)

pitarastasya necchaṁti tadvarṣaṁ śrāddhasatkriyām puṇyātiśayabhītena piṁḍadānaṁ nirākṛtam

His ancestors, that year, do not wish for that excellent performance of the shraddha; frightened by its excess of merit, the offering of the pinda has, by them, been declined.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.219.19)

śakreṇa taddine putramaraṇaṁ darśitaṁ bhayam yeṣāṁ ca śastramṛtyuḥ syādapamṛtyurathāpi vā

On that day Indra showed the fear of a son's death. Now hear of those who have died by weapons, or by an untimely death,

Verse 20 (skanda.6.219.20)

upasargamṛtānāṁ ca viṣamṛtyumupeyuṣām vahninā tu pradagdhānāṁ jalamṛtyumupeyuṣām

those who died from affliction, those who met death by poison, those consumed by fire, or those who met death by drowning,

Verse 21 (skanda.6.219.21)

sarpavyālahatānāṁ ca śṛṁgairudbandhanairapi ekoddiṣṭaṁ prakartavyaṁ caturdaśyāṁ narādhipa

and those killed by serpents or wild beasts, or by horns, or by hanging — for all these, O lord of men, the ekoddishta shraddha should be performed on the fourteenth day.

Verse 22 (skanda.6.219.22)

teṣāṁ tasminkṛte tṛptistatastatpakṣajā bhavet

When that shraddha is performed for them, the satisfaction arising from that fortnight comes to them.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.219.23)

sarve kāmāḥ puraḥ proktā yuṣmākaṁ ye mayā nṛpa amāvāsyādine śrāddhāttānāpnoti na saṁśayaḥ

O king, all these desires which I have earlier declared to you are also obtained through the shraddha performed on the day of the new moon; there is no doubt of it.

Verse 24 (skanda.6.219.24)

etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ kāmyaśrāddhaphalaṁ nṛpa yacchrutvā vāṁchitānkāmānsarvānāpnoti mānavaḥ

O king, all this has been declared to you — the fruit of the desire-specific shraddhas — hearing which a man obtains all the desires he has wished for.
