Nagara Khanda · Chapter 224

The Detailed Procedure of the Shraddha Rite

Chapter 223All chaptersChapter 225

Verse 1 (skanda.6.224.1)

ānarta uvāca śrutā mayā mahābhāga śrāddhārhā brāhmaṇāśca ye ye ca tyājyāstathā putrā bahavaścaiva suvrata

Anarta said: O greatly fortunate one, I have heard which brahmins are worthy of shraddha and which are to be shunned, and likewise the many kinds of sons, O one of good vows.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.224.2)

sāṁprataṁ kathayā'smākaṁ mantrapūrvaśca yo vidhiḥ gṛhasthena sadā kāryaḥ pitṝṇāṁ parituṣṭaye

Now tell us the procedure, together with its mantras, which a householder should always follow for the full satisfaction of the ancestors.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.224.3)

bhartṛyajña uvāca praṇamyāmaṁtritā ye ca śrāddhārthaṁ brāhmaṇottamāḥ ānīya kutape kāle tānsarvānprārthayedidam

Bhartriyajna said: Having bowed to those best of brahmins who have been invited for the shraddha, and having brought them at the kutapa time, one should entreat them all with this:

Verse 4 (skanda.6.224.4)

āgacchaṁtu mahābhāgā viśvedevā mahābalāḥ ye yatra vihitāḥ śrāddhe sāvadhānā bhavaṁtu te

'May the greatly fortunate, mighty Vishvedevas come; wherever they are appointed in the shraddha, may they be attentive.'

Verse 5 (skanda.6.224.5)

evamabhyarcya tānsarvāṁstataḥ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇām jānunī bhūtale nyasya tataścārghaṁ pradāpayet

Having thus honored all of them, and having then walked around them clockwise, having placed his knees upon the ground, he should then offer them the arghya.

Verse 6 (skanda.6.224.6)

maṁtreṇānena rājeṁdra sapuṣpākṣatacaṁdanaiḥ arghamenaṁ pragṛhṇaṁtu mayā dattaṁ dvijottamāḥ pādaprakṣālanārthāya prakurvaṁtu mama priyam

With this mantra, O lord of kings, together with flowers, unbroken rice, and sandal-paste: 'May the best of the twice-born accept this arghya given by me; may they do me this favor, for the washing of their feet.'

Verse 7 (skanda.6.224.7)

evamuktvā mahīpṛṣṭhe anulipte tataḥ param sākṣatānprakṣipeddarbhānviśvedevānprakīrtayan

Having spoken thus, then, upon the smeared ground, he should scatter kusha grass together with unbroken rice, invoking the names of the Vishvedevas.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.224.8)

apasavyaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā darbhāṁstilasamanvitān dviguṇānprakṣipedbhūmau pitṝnuddiśya cātmanaḥ

Then, having turned the sacred thread to the apasavya position, he should scatter kusha grass mixed with sesame, doubled, upon the ground, directed to the ancestors and to himself.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.224.9)

evaṁ sarvāḥ kriyāḥ kāryā daivikā savyapūrvikāḥ paitṛkāścāpasavyena muktvā nāṁdīmukhānpitṝn

Thus all rites pertaining to the gods should be performed in the ordinary savya manner, and those pertaining to the ancestors in the apasavya manner — excepting the Nandimukha ancestors.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.224.10)

sarve pūrvāmukhāḥ sthāpyā yugmāśca śaktito nṛpa pitaro mātṛpakṣīyāḥ sthāpyāścodaṅmukhāstathā

All should be seated facing east, in pairs according to one's means, O king; and the ancestors of the maternal side should be seated facing north.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.224.11)

ekaikaṁ vā trayo vā'pi syurekaikaṁ vā pṛthakpṛthak paitṛkānsthāpya cakreṇa pitṝṇāṁ parituṣṭaye

They may be one each, or three together, or each one separately — the paternal brahmins should be seated in a row, for the full satisfaction of the ancestors.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.224.12)

ṣaṣṭhyā vibhaktyā tu teṣāmāsanaṁ ca pradāpayet ṛjubhiḥ sākṣatairdarbhaiḥ sodakairdakṣiṇāṁgataḥ

Using the sixth (genitive) case-ending, one should give them their seat, with straight kusha grass together with unbroken rice and water, on the right side.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.224.13)

viṣamau dviguṇairdarbhaiḥ satilairvāmapārśvataḥ pāṇau toyaṁ parikṣipya na darbhāṁstu kathaṁ cana

On the left side, with an odd number of doubled kusha grass together with sesame — one should sprinkle water in the hand, but never place kusha grass directly in the hand.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.224.14)

yo haste cāsanaṁ dadyācceddārbhaṁ buddhivarjitaḥ pitaro nāsane tatra prakurvaṁti niveśanam

If a foolish man gives the kusha-grass seat into the hand instead of properly, the ancestors will not take their seat upon it.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.224.15)

āvāhanaṁ prakartavyaṁ vibhaktyā ca dvitīyayā yenāgacchaṁti te sarve samāhūtāḥ pṛthakpṛthak

The invocation should be made using the second case-ending, by which all of them, thus invited, come each separately.

Verse 16 (skanda.6.224.16)

anyayā ca vibhaktyā cetpitṝnāvāhayetkvacit nāgacchaṁti mahābhāgā yadyapi syurbubhukṣitāḥ

But if one should ever invoke the ancestors using a different case-ending, those greatly fortunate ones do not come, even though they may be hungry.

Verse 17 (skanda.6.224.17)

viśvedevāsa āgata maṁtreṇānena pārthiva teṣāmāvāhanaṁ kāryamakṣataiśca śiroṁ'tikāt

'O Vishvedevas, come' — with this mantra, O king, their invocation should be performed, with unbroken rice, from near their heads.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.224.18)

uśaṁtastveti ca tilaiḥ pitṝnāvāhayettataḥ āyaṁtu na iti japettataḥ pārthivasattama

Then, with the mantra 'ushantas tvā...' together with sesame, one should invoke the ancestors; then, O best of kings, one should recite 'āyantu naḥ...' (may they come to us).

Verse 19 (skanda.6.224.19)

śanno devīti maṁtreṇa svāhākārasamanvitam pitṝṇāmarghapātreṣu tathaiva ca jalaṁ kṣipet

With the mantra 'śaṁ no devīḥ...' together with 'svāhā,' water should likewise be poured into the arghya-vessels of the ancestors.

Verse 20 (skanda.6.224.20)

yavo'si yavayāsmaddvetyakṣatāṁstatra nikṣipet caṁdanaṁ gaṁdhapuṣpāṇi dhūpaṁ dadyādyathākramam sapavitreṣu hasteṣu dadyādarghyaṁ samāhitaḥ

With 'yavo 'si yavayāsmad dviṣaḥ...' (thou art barley, drive away our hatred), unbroken rice should be placed there. Sandal-paste, scented flowers, and incense should be given in due order; with concentrated mind, the arghya should be offered into hands holding the purifying kusha rings.

Verse 21 (skanda.6.224.21)

yā divyā iti mantreṇa svāhākārasamanvitam pitṝṇāmarghapātreṣu tathaiva ca jalaṁ kṣipet

With the mantra 'yā divyā...' together with 'svāhā,' water should likewise be poured into the arghya-vessels of the ancestors.

Verse 22 (skanda.6.224.22)

tilo'si somadaivatyo gosave devanirmitaḥ pratnavadbhiḥ pṛktaḥ svadhayā pitṝnimā~llokānprīṇāhi naḥ svadheti prakṣipettilān

'Thou art sesame, whose deity is Soma, made by the gods at the Gosava sacrifice, joined as of old with the svadha offering — gratify these our ancestors and these worlds' — with the word 'svadha,' one should scatter the sesame.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.224.23)

yādivyeti ca mantreṇa tato hyarghyaṁ pradāpayet pitṛpātre samādāya arghyapātrāṇi kṛtsnaśaḥ

Then, with the mantra 'yā divyā...,' the arghya should be offered; taking up all the arghya-vessels together into the ancestral vessel —

Verse 24 (skanda.6.224.24)

adhomukhaṁ ca tatpātraṁ mantravatsthāpayettataḥ āyuṣkāmastu tattoyaṁ locanābhyāṁ na vīkṣayet

— that vessel should then be set down face downward, in accordance with the mantra. One who desires long life should not look at that water with his eyes.

Verse 25 (skanda.6.224.25)

tatastu candanādīni dīpāṁtāni samādadet tataḥ pākaṁ samādāya pṛcchedviprāndvijo ttamān

Then one should present sandal-paste and the other items, ending with the lamp. Then, taking up the cooked food, one should ask the brahmins, the best of the twice-born:

Verse 26 (skanda.6.224.26)

ahamagnau kariṣyāmi homaṁ pitṛsamudbhavam anujñā dīyatāṁ mahyamapasavyāśritasya bhoḥ

'I shall perform, in the fire, the oblation arising for the ancestors; may permission be granted to me, who have taken the apasavya posture, O sirs.'

Verse 27 (skanda.6.224.27)

kuruṣveti ca taiḥ prokte gatvāgni śaraṇaṁ tataḥ agnaye kavyavāhanāya svāheti prathamāhutiḥ

When they have said, 'Do so,' then, having gone to the shelter of the fire, the first oblation is: 'To Agni Kavyavahana, svaha.'

Verse 28 (skanda.6.224.28)

somāya pitṛmate svadheti ca tataḥ param hutamannaṁ ca śeṣaṁ ca śrāddhārhebhyaḥ pradīyate

Then next: 'To Soma, lord of the ancestors, svadha.' The food that has been offered in oblation, and what remains, is given to those worthy of the shraddha.

Verse 29 (skanda.6.224.29)

iṣṭamannaṁ tato dattvā pātramālabhya saṁjapet viprāṁguṣṭhaṁ samādāya pākamadhye nidhāya ca

Having then given the desired food, and having touched the vessel, one should recite the mantras; taking hold of the brahmin's thumb and placing it in the midst of the cooked food —

Verse 30 (skanda.6.224.30)

pṛthivī te pātramādāya vaiṣṇa vyā ca ṛcā tathā svahastena na vai dadyātpratyakṣaṁ lavaṇaṁ tathā

— [one recites] 'Prithivi te patram' (the earth is thy vessel), and likewise with the Vaishnavi verse. One should never give salt visibly, with one's own hand, directly.

Verse 31 (skanda.6.224.31)

svahastena ca yaddattaṁ pratyakṣalavaṇaṁ nṛpa tacchrāddhaṁ vyarthatāṁ yāti dhṛte datterddhabhuktake tṛptāñjñātvā tato viprānagre tvannaṁ parikṣipet

Whatever salt is given visibly with one's own hand, O king — that shraddha becomes fruitless, whether given while held or already half-eaten. Then, having ascertained that the brahmins are satisfied, food should be scattered before them.

Verse 32 (skanda.6.224.32)

agnidagdhāśca ye jīvā yepyadagdhāḥ kule mama bhūmau dattena tṛpyaṁtu tṛptā yāṁtu parāṁ gatim

'Whatever souls in my family, whether consumed by fire or not consumed by fire, may they be satisfied by what is given upon the ground; being satisfied, may they attain the supreme state.'

Verse 33 (skanda.6.224.33)

sakṛtsakṛjjalaṁ dattvā gāyatrītritayaṁ japet madhuvāteti saṁkīrtya tataḥ pṛccheddvijottamān

Having given water once each time, one should recite the Gayatri three times; then, having recited 'madhu vātā...,' one should ask the best of the twice-born:

Verse 34 (skanda.6.224.34)

tṛptāḥ stha iti rājendra anujñāṁ prārthayettataḥ bandhūnāṁ bhojanārthāya śeṣasyānnasya bhaktimān

'Are you satisfied?' O lord of kings; and then, being devoted, he should request their permission for the feeding of relatives with the remaining food.

Verse 35 (skanda.6.224.35)

ucchiṣṭasannidhau paścātpitṛvediṁ samācaret pitṛviprāsanasthānāṁ nocchiṣṭaṁ dvijasannidhau

Afterward, near the leftover food, he should prepare the ancestral altar; leftover food should not remain near the seats of the brahmins representing the ancestors.

Verse 36 (skanda.6.224.36)

tato vediṁ samādhāya paitṛkīṁ dakṣiṇāplavām tasyāṁ darbhānsamādhāya kuryāccaivāvanejanam

Then, having prepared the ancestral altar sloping toward the south, and having placed kusha grass upon it, one should perform the washing rite there.

Verse 37 (skanda.6.224.37)

vibhaktyā pūrvayā paścātpiṁḍāndadyādyathākramam bhūyo'pyatra jalaṁ dadyātpitṛtīrthena pārthiva sūtraṁ ca pratipiṇḍe vai dayātteṣu pṛthakpṛthak

Then, using the earlier case-ending, one should offer the pindas in due order; water should be offered again here through the pitritirtha, O king; and a thread should be given, separately, upon each pinda.

Verse 38 (skanda.6.224.38)

yaḥ sūtraṁ pūrvapiṇḍeṣu satataṁ viniyojayet sa virodhaṁ caretteṣāṁ troṭanācca parasparam

One who continuously runs the same thread across the earlier pindas causes discord among them, through their being severed from one another.

Verse 39 (skanda.6.224.39)

tataḥ saṁpūjayetsarvānpiṁḍānyadvaddvijottamān ācamya prakṣālya tathā hastau pādau ca pārthiva

Then, having sipped water and washed both hands and feet, O king, one should honor all the pindas just as the brahmins were honored.

Verse 40 (skanda.6.224.40)

namaskṛtya pitṝnpaścātsuprokṣitaṁ tataḥ param kṛtvā savyena rājendra yācayitvā varāśiṣaḥ

Having then bowed to the ancestors, and having well sprinkled the pindas, one should then, using the ordinary savya posture, O lord of kings, beg for excellent blessings.

Verse 41 (skanda.6.224.41)

akṣayyasalilaṁ deyaṁ ṣaṣṭhyā caiva tataḥ param pavitrāṇi samādāya ūrdhvaṁ svadheti kīrtayet astu svadheti tairukte piṁḍopari parikṣipet

The imperishable water should then be given, using the sixth case-ending; taking up the purifying kusha rings, one should proclaim upward, 'svadha'; when they have said 'astu svadha,' one should scatter it over the pindas.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.224.42)

tato madhu samādāya pāyasaṁ ca tilodakam ūrjasveti ca mantreṇa pitṝṇāmuparikṣipet

Then, taking up honey, kheer, and sesame-water, one should scatter it upon the pindas for the ancestors, with the mantra 'ūrjasva...' (be full of vigor).

Verse 43 (skanda.6.224.43)

uttānamarghapātraṁ tu kṛtvā dadyācca dakṣiṇām hiraṇyaṁ devatānāṁ ca pitṝṇāṁ rajataṁ tathā

Having turned the arghya-vessel face up, one should give the dakshina — gold for the gods, and, likewise, silver for the ancestors.

Verse 44 (skanda.6.224.44)

tataḥ svastyudakaṁ dadyātpitṛpūrvaṁ ca savyataḥ na strībhirna ca bālena nānye naiva ca kenacit

Then the water for well-being should be given, the ancestors first, in the savya manner; and it should not be done by women, nor by a child, nor by anyone else at all.

Verse 45 (skanda.6.224.45)

śrāddhīyaviprapātraṁ ca svayameva pracālayet

The vessels of the shraddha-brahmins should be moved away by oneself alone.

Verse 46 (skanda.6.224.46)

tataḥ kṛtāṁjalirbhūtvā prārthayetpārthivottama aghorāḥ pitaraḥ santu asmadgotraṁ vivarddhatām

Then, with joined palms, one should pray, O best of kings: 'May the ancestors be free of terror; may our gotra increase.'

Verse 47 (skanda.6.224.47)

dātāro no'bhivardhaṁtāṁ vedāḥ santatireva naḥ śraddhā ca no mā vyagamadbahudheyaṁ ca no'stviti

'May our givers of gifts increase; may our Vedic study and our progeny continue. May our faith never depart from us, and may we have much to give.'

Verse 48 (skanda.6.224.48)

annaṁ ca no bahu bhavedatithīṁśca labhemaddi yācitāraśca naḥ santu mā ca yāciṣma kaścana

'May our food be abundant, and may we obtain guests. May there be those who ask of us, and may we never have to ask anything of anyone.'

Verse 49 (skanda.6.224.49)

etā evāśiṣaḥ santu viśvedevāḥ prīyaṁtāṁ tataḥ svastyarthamudakaṁ dadyātpitṛpūrvaṁ ca savyataḥ

'May these very blessings be granted; may the Vishvedevas be pleased.' Then, for the sake of well-being, water should be given, the ancestors first, in the savya manner.

Verse 50 (skanda.6.224.50)

vājevājeti ca ṛcā visṛjecca tataḥ param āmā vājasyeti pradakṣiṇīkṛtyopaveśayet

With the verse 'vāje-vāje...' one should then take leave of the ancestors; with 'āmā vājasya...' one should walk around them clockwise and cause them to be seated again.

Verse 51 (skanda.6.224.51)

pādāvamardanaṁ kṛtvā āsīmāṁtamanuvrajet baliṁ ca nikṣipettasmādbhojanaṁ ca samācaret

Having massaged their feet, one should escort them to the boundary; then one should set out the bali offering, and afterward take one's own meal.

Verse 52 (skanda.6.224.52)

maunena dṛśyate sūryo yāvattāvannarādhipa

This should be done in silence for as long as the sun is still visible, O lord of men.

Verse 53 (skanda.6.224.53)

yaścaivāstamite sūrye bhuṁkte ca śrāddhakṛnnaraḥ vyarthatāṁ yāti tacchrāddhaṁ tasmādbhuṁjīta no niśi

Whoever, being the performer of the shraddha, eats after the sun has set — his shraddha becomes fruitless. Therefore one should not eat at night on that day.
