Nagara Khanda · Chapter 241

The Teaching on the Sacchudra, the Righteous Shudra

Chapter 240All chaptersChapter 242

Verse 1 (skanda.6.241.1)

īśvara uvāca etatte pūjanaṁ viṣṇoḥ ṣoḍaśopāyasaṁbhavam kathitaṁ yaddvijaḥ kṛtvā prāpnoti paramaṁ padam

Ishvara said: "This worship of Vishnu, arising from the sixteen methods, has been told to you; performing which, a twice-born attains the supreme state."

Verse 2 (skanda.6.241.2)

tathā ca kṣatriyaviśāṁ karaṇānmuktiruttamā śūdrāṇāṁ nādhikāro'sminstrīṇāṁ naiva kadācana

"And likewise, by performing it, the highest liberation comes to kshatriyas and vaishyas as well. But shudras have no authority in this rite, nor do women, ever."

Verse 3 (skanda.6.241.3)

kārtikeya uvāca śūdrāṇāṁ ca tathā strīṇāṁ dharmaṁ vistarato vada kena muktirbhavetteṣāṁ kṛṣṇasyārādhanaṁ vinā

Kartikeya said: "Then tell me in detail the dharma of shudras and of women. By what means can liberation come to them, apart from the worship of Krishna?"

Verse 4 (skanda.6.241.4)

īśvara uvāca sacchūdrairapi no kāryā vedākṣaravicāraṇā na śrotavyā na paṭhyā ca paṭhannarakabhāgbhavet

Ishvara said: "Even by righteous shudras, no inquiry into the syllables of the Veda is to be undertaken; it is not to be heard, nor recited — one who recites it becomes subject to hell."

Verse 5 (skanda.6.241.5)

purāṇānāṁ naiva pāṭhaḥ śravaṇaṁ kārayetsadā smṛtyuktaṁ sugurorgrāhyaṁ na pāṭhaḥ śravaṇādikam

"They should not themselves recite the Puranas, but should always have them read aloud by another for their hearing. What is taught in the Smritis should be received from a good teacher; reciting or reading it themselves is not permitted."

Verse 6 (skanda.6.241.6)

skaṁda uvāca sacchūdrāḥ ke samākhyātāstāṁśca vistarato vada ke saṁtaḥ ke ca śūdrāśca sacchūdrā nāmataśca ke

Skanda said: "Who are called the sacchudras, the righteous shudras? Describe them in detail. Who are the virtuous, who are the shudras, and who, by name, are the sacchudras?"

Verse 7 (skanda.6.241.7)

īśvara uvāca dharmoḍhā yasya patnī syātsa sacchūdra udāhṛtaḥ samānakularūpā ca daśadoṣavivarjitā

Ishvara said: "He whose wife has been wedded according to dharma is declared a sacchudra — she of equal family and beauty, free from the ten defects,"

Verse 8 (skanda.6.241.8)

udvoḍhā vedavidhinā sa sacchūdraḥ prakīrtitaḥ aklīvā'vyaṁginī śastā mahārogādyadūṣitā

"He who has taken her in marriage according to Vedic rule is proclaimed a sacchudra — she being unimpaired, without deformity, excellent, and untainted by any grave disease,"

Verse 9 (skanda.6.241.9)

aniṁditā śubhakalā cakṣurogavivarjitā bādhiryahīnā capalā kanyā madhurabhāṣiṇī

"— beyond reproach, of auspicious grace, free from eye disease, free from deafness, not fickle, a maiden sweet of speech,"

Verse 10 (skanda.6.241.10)

dūṣaṇairdaśabhirhīnā vedoktavidhinā naraiḥ vivāhitā ca sā patnī gṛhiṇī yasya sarvadā

"— free from the ten defects — she who is married by men according to the Vedic rite: such a wife, who is always the mistress of the household —"

Verse 11 (skanda.6.241.11)

sacchūdraḥ sa tu vijñeyo devādīnāṁ vibhāgakṛt puṇyakāryeṣu sarveṣu prathamaṁ sā prakīrtitā

"— he who has such a wife is to be known as a sacchudra, one who allots their due share to the gods and others; and in all meritorious undertakings, she is declared to take the foremost place."

Verse 12 (skanda.6.241.12)

tayā suvihito dharmaḥ saṁpūrṇaphaladāyakaḥ cāturmāsye viśeṣeṇa tayā saha guṇādhikaḥ

Dharma, well performed together with her, bestows its fruit in full; especially during Chaturmasya, performed together with her it becomes richer in merit.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.241.13)

bhāryāratiḥ śucirbhṛtyādīnāṁ poṣaṇatatparaḥ śrāddhādikārako nityamiṣṭāpūrttaprasādhakaḥ

He who delights in his wife, who is pure, devoted to the maintenance of his servants and dependents, who constantly performs the shraddha rites, and who accomplishes acts of piety such as digging wells and the like —

Verse 14 (skanda.6.241.14)

namaskārāntamantreṇa nāmasaṁkīrtanena ca devāstasya ca tuṣyanti paṁcayajñādikaiḥ śubhaiḥ

— the gods are pleased with him through the mantra ending in obeisance, through the chanting of the divine names, and through the auspicious five great sacrifices and the like.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.241.15)

snānaṁ ca tarpaṇaṁ caiva vahnihomo'pyamaṁtrakaḥ brahmayajño'titheḥ pūjā paṁcayajñānna saṁtyajet

Bathing, the offering of libations, the fire-oblation performed even without mantras, the study-sacrifice, and the honoring of guests — one should never abandon these five sacrifices.

Verse 16 (skanda.6.241.16)

kāryaṁ strībhiśca śūdraiśca hyamaṁtraṁ paṁcayajñakam paṁcayajñaiśca saṁtuṣṭā yathaiṣāṁ pitṛdevatāḥ

By women and by shudras, this fivefold sacrifice should be performed without mantras. By these five sacrifices, their ancestors and gods are satisfied,

Verse 17 (skanda.6.241.17)

tathā pativratāyāśca patiśuśrūṣayā sadā pativratāyā dehe tu sarve devā vasaṁti hi

and likewise, through a devoted wife's constant service to her husband — for indeed, all the gods dwell within the body of a woman devoted to her husband.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.241.18)

atastābhyāṁ sametābhyāṁ dharmādīnāṁ samāgamaḥ yadobhayormate pṛṣṭe saṁtuṣṭāḥ pitṛdevatāḥ

Therefore, when the two of them are united, there comes the fulfillment of dharma and the rest; when the will of both is sought together, the ancestors and gods become satisfied.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.241.19)

kāryādīnāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ saṁgamastatra nityadā cāturmāsye samāyāte viṣṇubhaktyā tayoḥ śivam

There, always, is found the union of all their undertakings; when Chaturmasya arrives, through devotion to Vishnu, well-being comes to them both.

Verse 20 (skanda.6.241.20)

samānajātisaṁbhūtā patnī yasya dhṛtā bhavet pūrvo bharttā'rddhabhāgī syāddvitīyasya na kiṁcana

If a man has taken a wife born of an equal caste and she is later wedded to another, the first husband shares half of the merit she earns, whereas the second husband has no such share at all.

Verse 21 (skanda.6.241.21)

arthakāryādhikāro'syāstena dharmārdhadhāriṇī svaṁsvaṁ kṛtaṁ sadaiva syāttayoḥ karma śubhāśubham

She has authority over matters of wealth and undertakings, and thereby she bears half of the dharma. Whatever good or bad deed either of them performs remains always their own.

Verse 22 (skanda.6.241.22)

yā'nugacchati bhartāraṁ mṛtaṁ sutapasā dvija sādhvī sā hi parijñeyā tayā coddhriyate kulam

O brahmin, the woman who follows her deceased husband, through great austerity, is indeed to be recognized as a chaste and virtuous wife; by her, the entire family lineage is uplifted.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.241.23)

anyajātermṛtasyātha dhṛtā vāpi vivāhitā vaiśvānarasya mārgeṇa sā tamuddharate patim

And even a woman who was taken or wedded by a now-deceased husband of a different lineage delivers that husband by the path of the sacred fire.

Verse 24 (skanda.6.241.24)

yathā jalācca jaṁbālaḥ kṛṣyate dhārmikairnṛbhiḥ evamuddharate sādhvī bharttāraṁ yā'nugacchati

Just as mud is drawn out from water by righteous men, so does the chaste wife who follows her husband deliver him.

Verse 25 (skanda.6.241.25)

anyajātisamudbhūtā anyena vidhṛtā yadi tāvubhau dharmakāryeṣu saṁtyājyau nityadā matau

If a woman born of one lineage has been taken in marriage by a man of another, the two of them are always held to be excluded from joint acts of dharma.

Verse 26 (skanda.6.241.26)

svaṁsvaṁ karma prakurutaḥ satkarmajaṁ svakaṁ phalam tasmādvariṣṭhā hīnā vā satkulyā śūdrasaṁbhavaiḥ

Each of them performs their own deeds, and the fruit born of good deeds remains their own. Therefore, whether of higher or more modest standing, those of shudra birth should take a wife of good family —

Verse 27 (skanda.6.241.27)

dhṛtā na kāryā sā patnī yatkaroti na varddhate tayā saha kṛtaṁ puṇyaṁ varddhate daśadhottaram

— a wife should not be taken with whom performed dharma does not increase; merit performed together with a suitable wife increases tenfold and more.

Verse 28 (skanda.6.241.28)

anantatṛptidaṁ naiva tatsutairapi vā tathā krayakrītā ca yā kanyā dāsī sā parikīrtitā

Such a union does not give lasting satisfaction, nor even through the sons born of it. And a maiden who has been purchased for a price is declared to be a slave-wife,

Verse 29 (skanda.6.241.29)

sacchūdrasyādhikāre sā kadācinnaiva jāyate yā kanyā svayamudyamya pitrā dattā varāya ca

— she never has any place in the rites of a sacchudra. But the maiden who, given through her own father's effort, is bestowed upon a suitable bridegroom,

Verse 30 (skanda.6.241.30)

vivāhavidhinodūḍhā pitṛdevārthasādhinī sulakṣaṇā vinītā sā vivekādiguṇā śubhā

— wedded according to the marriage rite, accomplishing the purposes of ancestors and gods, of good marks, well-disciplined, endowed with discernment and other virtues, auspicious —

Verse 31 (skanda.6.241.31)

saccaritrā patiparā sā tebhyo dātumarhati viśuddhakulajā kanyā dharmoḍhā dharmacāriṇī

— of good conduct, devoted to her husband — she alone is fit to make offerings on their behalf. A maiden born of a pure lineage, wedded according to dharma and walking in dharma —

Verse 32 (skanda.6.241.32)

sā punāti kulaṁ sarvaṁ mātṛtaḥ pitṛtastathā eṣa eva mayā proktaḥ sacchūdrāṇāṁ paro vidhiḥ

— purifies the entire lineage, both on the mother's side and the father's. This alone is the supreme rule declared by me for the sacchudras.

Verse 33 (skanda.6.241.33)

adhojātisamudbhūtā sacchūdrātkramahīnajā vivāho daśadhā teṣāṁ daśadhā putratā bhavet

For one born of a lower lineage, of a rank lesser than the sacchudra's, marriage is of ten kinds, and likewise sonship is of ten kinds.

Verse 34 (skanda.6.241.34)

catvāra uttamāḥ proktā vivāhā munisattama śeṣāḥ sarvaprakṛtiṣu kathitāśca purāvidaiḥ

O best of sages, four of these marriages are declared the highest; the remaining ones are said by the knowers of the ancient lore to apply among all the other prakritis.

Verse 35 (skanda.6.241.35)

prājāpatyastathā brāhmo daivārṣau cātiśobhanā gāṁdharvaścāsuraścaiva rākṣasaśca piśācakaḥ

The Prajapatya, and the Brahma, and the two most excellent forms, the Daiva and the Arsha, are the four highest; then the Gandharva, the Asura, the Rakshasa, and the Paishacha,

Verse 36 (skanda.6.241.36)

prātibho ghātanaśceti vivāhāḥ kathitā daśa ete hi hīnajātīnāṁ vivāhāḥ parikīrtitāḥ

— together with the Pratibha and the Ghatana: thus ten forms of marriage are told. These indeed are declared to be the marriages of the lower lineages.

Verse 37 (skanda.6.241.37)

aurasaḥ kṣetrajaścaiva dattaḥ kṛtrima eva ca gūḍhotpanno'paviddhaśca kānīnaśca sahoḍhajaḥ

The Aurasa, born of one's own body, and the Kshetraja, and the Datta, adopted, and also the Kritrima, made; the Gudhotpanna, secretly born, the Apaviddha, cast-off, the Kanina, and the Sahodhaja —

Verse 38 (skanda.6.241.38)

krītaḥ paunarbhavaścāpi putrā daśavidhāḥ smṛtāḥ aurasādapi hīnāśca te'pi teṣāṁ śubhāvahāḥ

— the Krita, bought, and also the Paunarbhava: sons are thus remembered to be of ten kinds. Even those inferior to the Aurasa son bring good fortune to their fathers.

Verse 39 (skanda.6.241.39)

aṣṭādaśamitā nīcāḥ prakṛtānāṁ yathātathā vidhinaiva kriyā naiva smṛtimārgo'pi naiva ca

The lowly working classes are reckoned as eighteen; for them there is indeed no rite prescribed by scriptural injunction, nor any formal path laid down in the Smritis.

Verse 40 (skanda.6.241.40)

tāsāṁ brāhmaṇaśuśrūṣā viṣṇudhyānaṁ śivārcanam amantrātpuṇyakaraṇaṁ dānaṁ deyaṁ ca vai sadā

For them, service to brahmins, meditation on Vishnu, and the worship of Shiva, the performance of pious acts without mantras, and the giving of gifts — these are always to be practiced.

Verse 41 (skanda.6.241.41)

na dānasya kṣayo loke śraddhayā yatpradīyate aśraddhayā'śucitayā dānaṁ vairasyakāraṇam

In this world, a gift given with faith never diminishes; but a gift given without faith, in impurity, becomes a cause of enmity rather than merit.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.241.42)

ahiṁsādi samādiṣṭo dharmastāsāṁ mahāphalaḥ cāturmāsye viśeṣeṇa tridiveśādisevayā

For them, the dharma taught, beginning with non-violence, bears great fruit; especially during Chaturmasya, through the service of the lords of heaven and the rest,

Verse 43 (skanda.6.241.43)

sudarśanaistathā dharmaḥ sevyate hyavirodhibhiḥ sacchūdrairdānapuṇyaiśca dvijaśuśrūṣaṇādibhiḥ

— dharma is thus rightly observed by those of good vision, who act without contradicting their station, through gifts and merit-making, and through service to brahmins and the like, performed by sacchudras.

Verse 44 (skanda.6.241.44)

vṛttiśca satyānṛtajā vāṇijyavyavahārajā aśītibhāgamārabhyādvyājādvārdhuṣikaḥ śate

Their livelihood arises from trade, whether honest or with some falsehood, and from commercial dealings; a moneylender may take interest at up to eighty parts per hundred through such practice.

Verse 45 (skanda.6.241.45)

sapādabhāgavṛddhistu kṣattriyādiṣu gṛhyate evaṁ na bandho bhavati pātakasya kadācana

But a rate of increase of only one and a quarter parts is taken from kshatriyas and the like. Observed thus, one never incurs the bondage of sin.

Verse 46 (skanda.6.241.46)

prātaḥkarma sureśānāṁ madhyāhne dvijasevanam aparāhṇe'tha kāryāṇi kurvanmartyaḥ sukhī bhavet

Performing the worship of the gods in the morning, the service of brahmins at midday, and worldly business in the afternoon, a mortal becomes happy.

Verse 47 (skanda.6.241.47)

gṛhasthaiśca sadā bhāvyaṁ yāvajjīvaṁ kriyāparaiḥ paṁcayajñarataiścaivātithidvijasupūjakaiḥ

Householders should always remain, throughout their lives, devoted to their duties — devoted to the five great sacrifices, and honoring guests and brahmins well,

Verse 48 (skanda.6.241.48)

viṣṇubhaktirataiścaiva vedamantravipāṭhakaiḥ satataṁ dānaśīlaiśca dīnārtajanavatsalaiḥ

— devoted to the worship of Vishnu, chanting Vedic mantras, constantly generous in giving, and affectionate toward the poor and the afflicted,

Verse 49 (skanda.6.241.49)

kṣamādiguṇasaṁyuktairdvādaśākṣarapūjakaiḥ ṣaḍakṣaramahodgāraparamānandapūritaiḥ

— endowed with forbearance and other virtues, worshipping with the twelve-syllabled mantra, filled with the greatest joy from the utterance of the six-syllabled mantra,

Verse 50 (skanda.6.241.50)

sadapatyaiḥ sadācāraiḥ satāṁ śuśrūṣaṇairapi vimatsaraiḥ sadā stheyaṁ tāpakleśavivarjitaiḥ

— blessed with good offspring, of good conduct, attentive in the service of the virtuous, free from envy, always steadfast, and free from anguish and affliction,

Verse 51 (skanda.6.241.51)

pravrajyāvarjanairevaṁ sacchūdrairdharmatatparaiḥ toṣaṇaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ kāryaṁ vittānusārataḥ

— avoiding renunciation of the household life: thus sacchudras devoted to dharma should act, bringing satisfaction to all beings according to their means.

Verse 52 (skanda.6.241.52)

sadā viṣṇuśivādīnāṁ ye bhaktāste narāḥ sadā devavaddivi dīvyaṁti cāturmāsye viśeṣataḥ

Those men who are always devoted to Vishnu, Shiva, and the other gods shine forever in heaven like the gods themselves — especially so, through their observance during Chaturmasya.
