गालव उवाच । एकदा भगवान्रुद्रः कैलासशिखरे स्थितः । दधार परमां लक्ष्मीमुमया सहितः किल

gālava uvāca ekadā bhagavānrudraḥ kailāsaśikhare sthitaḥ dadhāra paramāṁ lakṣmīmumayā sahitaḥ kila

Galava said: Once, the blessed Rudra, seated upon the peak of Kailasa, together with Uma, bore indeed the supreme glory.

गणानां कोटयस्तिस्रस्तं यदा पर्यवारयन् । वीरबाहुर्वीरभद्रो वीरसेनश्च भृङ्गिराट्

gaṇānāṁ koṭayastisrastaṁ yadā paryavārayan vīrabāhurvīrabhadro vīrasenaśca bhṛṅgirāṭ

सिंहवक्त्रो वृषहनुः प्रचण्डस्तुंडिरेव च । एते चान्ये च बहवस्तदा भवसमीपगाः

महादेव जयेत्युच्चैर्भद्रकालीसमन्विताः । भूतप्रेतपिशाचानां समूहा यस्य वल्लभाः

crying aloud, 'Victory to Mahadeva!', together with Bhadrakali; the hosts of bhutas, pretas, and pishachas who are dear to him,

अस्तुवंस्तं समीपस्था वसन्ते समुपागते । वनराजिर्विभाति स्म नवकोरकशोभिता

astuvaṁstaṁ samīpasthā vasante samupāgate vanarājirvibhāti sma navakorakaśobhitā

standing nearby, praised him, as spring had arrived; the row of forest trees shone forth, adorned with fresh buds,

दक्षिणानिलसंस्पर्शः कवीनां सुखकृद्बभौ । वियोगिहृदयाकर्षी किंशुकः पुष्पशोभितः

dakṣiṇānilasaṁsparśaḥ kavīnāṁ sukhakṛdbabhau viyogihṛdayākarṣī kiṁśukaḥ puṣpaśobhitaḥ

and the touch of the southern breeze became a source of delight for poets; the kimshuka tree, adorned with flowers, drew forth the hearts of those separated from their beloveds.

द्वन्द्वादिविक्रियाभावं चिक्रीडुश्च समंततः । तस्मिन्विगाढे समये मनस्युन्मादके तथा

dvandvādivikriyābhāvaṁ cikrīḍuśca samaṁtataḥ tasminvigāḍhe samaye manasyunmādake tathā

Creatures in pairs sported about on every side, in that state of excitement; at that deeply absorbing time, which maddened the mind,

नंदी दंडधरः संज्ञां दृष्ट्वा चक्रे हरो परः । अलं चापलदोषेण तपः कुर्वंतु भो गणाः

naṁdī daṁḍadharaḥ saṁjñāṁ dṛṣṭvā cakre haro paraḥ alaṁ cāpaladoṣeṇa tapaḥ kurvaṁtu bho gaṇāḥ

Nandi, the staff-bearer, seeing the situation, gave a sign, and the supreme Hara said: 'Enough of the fault of fickleness — perform austerity, O ganas!'

Verse 13 (skanda.6.256.13)

तदा सर्वे वनमपि भूकांडजमभूत्पुनः । गणास्ते तप आतस्थुर्दृष्ट्वा कान्तिं वसन्तजाम्

tadā sarve vanamapi bhūkāṁḍajamabhūtpunaḥ gaṇāste tapa ātasthurdṛṣṭvā kāntiṁ vasantajām

Then the whole forest too became as if newly sprung again from the earth; those ganas, having seen the beauty born of spring, took up austerity.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.256.14)

ततः सा विश्वजननी पार्वती प्राह शंकरम् । इयं ते करगा नित्यमक्षमाला महेश्वर

tataḥ sā viśvajananī pārvatī prāha śaṁkaram iyaṁ te karagā nityamakṣamālā maheśvara

Then that Mother of the universe, Parvati, spoke to Shankara: 'O Maheshvara, this rosary is ever in your hand,'

Verse 15 (skanda.6.256.15)

त्वया किं जप्यते देव संदेहयति मे मनः । त्वमेकः सर्वभूतानामादिकृत्सकलेश्वरः

tvayā kiṁ japyate deva saṁdehayati me manaḥ tvamekaḥ sarvabhūtānāmādikṛtsakaleśvaraḥ

'what is it, O god, that you recite with it? My mind is troubled with doubt. You alone are the creator of all beings, the lord of all,'

Verse 16 (skanda.6.256.16)

न माता न पिता बंधुस्तव जातिर्न कश्चन । अहं तव परं किंचिद्वेद्मि नास्तीति किंचन

na mātā na pitā baṁdhustava jātirna kaścana ahaṁ tava paraṁ kiṁcidvedmi nāstīti kiṁcana

'you have no mother, no father, no kinsman, no lineage at all. I know of nothing superior to you — nothing else exists,'

श्रमेण त्वं समायुक्तो श्वासोच्छ्वासपरायणः । जपन्नपि महाभक्त्या दृश्यसे त्वं मया सदा

śrameṇa tvaṁ samāyukto śvāsocchvāsaparāyaṇaḥ japannapi mahābhaktyā dṛśyase tvaṁ mayā sadā

'yet you are always seen by me, engaged in effort, intent upon breath, reciting with great devotion —'

त्वत्तःपरतरं किचिद्यत्त्वं ध्यायसि चेतसा । तन्मे कथय देवेश यद्यहं दयिता तव

tvattaḥparataraṁ kicidyattvaṁ dhyāyasi cetasā tanme kathaya deveśa yadyahaṁ dayitā tava

'so if there is something greater than you which you meditate upon in your heart, tell me that, O lord of gods, if indeed I am dear to you.'

Verse 19 (skanda.6.256.19)

इति स्पृष्टस्तदा शंभुरुवाच हरिसेवकः । हरेर्नामसहस्राणां सारं ध्यायामि नित्यशः

iti spṛṣṭastadā śaṁbhuruvāca harisevakaḥ harernāmasahasrāṇāṁ sāraṁ dhyāyāmi nityaśaḥ

Thus questioned, Shambhu, the servant of Hari, then said: 'I ever meditate upon the essence of the thousand names of Hari,'

Verse 20 (skanda.6.256.20)

जपामि रामनामांकमवातरं ससप्तमम् । चतुर्विशतिसंख्याकान्प्रादुर्भावान्हरेर्गुणान्

japāmi rāmanāmāṁkamavātaraṁ sasaptamam caturviśatisaṁkhyākānprādurbhāvānharerguṇān

'I recite the name of Rama together with the avataras up to the seventh; and I recite the twenty-four incarnations, the qualities of Hari,'

Verse 21 (skanda.6.256.21)

एतेषामपि यत्सारं प्रणवाख्यं महत्फलम् । द्वादशाक्षरसंयुक्तं ब्रह्मरूपं सनातनम्

eteṣāmapi yatsāraṁ praṇavākhyaṁ mahatphalam dvādaśākṣarasaṁyuktaṁ brahmarūpaṁ sanātanam

'and, even of all these, that which is their essence — called the Pranava, of great fruit; joined with the twelve syllables, the eternal form of Brahman,'

Verse 22 (skanda.6.256.22)

अक्षरत्रयसंबद्धं ग्रामत्रयसमन्वितम् । सबिंदुं प्रणवं शश्वज्जपामि जपमालया

akṣaratrayasaṁbaddhaṁ grāmatrayasamanvitam sabiṁduṁ praṇavaṁ śaśvajjapāmi japamālayā

'joined with three syllables, endowed with the three musical scales — that Pranava, together with the bindu, I recite constantly with this rosary.'

Verse 23 (skanda.6.256.23)

वेदसारमिदं नित्यं द्व्यक्षरं सततोद्यतम् । निर्मलं ह्यमृतं शांतं सदूपममृतोपमम्

vedasāramidaṁ nityaṁ dvyakṣaraṁ satatodyatam nirmalaṁ hyamṛtaṁ śāṁtaṁ sadūpamamṛtopamam

'This is the eternal essence of the Vedas, of two syllables, ever active; stainless indeed, immortal, tranquil, of true form, comparable to nectar,'

Verse 24 (skanda.6.256.24)

कलातीतं निर्वशगं निर्व्यापारं महत्परम् । विश्वाधारं जगन्मध्यं कोटिब्रह्मांडबीजकम्

kalātītaṁ nirvaśagaṁ nirvyāpāraṁ mahatparam viśvādhāraṁ jaganmadhyaṁ koṭibrahmāṁḍabījakam

'beyond the digits of time, subject to none, free of activity, the great and supreme; the support of the universe, the centre of the world, the seed of crores of universes,'

Verse 25 (skanda.6.256.25)

जडं शुद्धक्रियं वापि निरंजनं नियामकम् । यज्ज्ञात्वा मुच्यते क्षिप्रं घोरसंसारबंधनात्

jaḍaṁ śuddhakriyaṁ vāpi niraṁjanaṁ niyāmakam yajjñātvā mucyate kṣipraṁ ghorasaṁsārabaṁdhanāt

'inert, or of pure action; stainless, the regulator — knowing which, one is quickly freed from the terrible bondage of worldly existence,'

Verse 26 (skanda.6.256.26)

ओंकारसहितं यच्च द्वादशाक्षरबीजकम् । जपतः पापकोटीनां दावाग्नित्वं प्रजायते

oṁkārasahitaṁ yacca dvādaśākṣarabījakam japataḥ pāpakoṭīnāṁ dāvāgnitvaṁ prajāyate

'and that which, together with the syllable Om, is the twelve-syllabled seed-mantra — for one who recites it, it becomes as a forest-fire to crores of sins.'

Verse 27 (skanda.6.256.27)

एतदेव परं गुह्यमेतदेव परं महः । एतद्धि दुर्लभं लोके लोकत्रयविभूषणम्

etadeva paraṁ guhyametadeva paraṁ mahaḥ etaddhi durlabhaṁ loke lokatrayavibhūṣaṇam

'This alone is the supreme secret, this alone is the supreme radiance; this indeed is rare in the world, the ornament of the three worlds,'

Verse 28 (skanda.6.256.28)

प्राप्यते जन्मकोटीभिः शुभाशुभविनाशकम् । एतदेव परं ज्ञानं द्वादशाक्षरचिन्तनम्

prāpyate janmakoṭībhiḥ śubhāśubhavināśakam etadeva paraṁ jñānaṁ dvādaśākṣaracintanam

'obtained only after crores of births, the destroyer of both good and bad karma. This alone is the supreme knowledge — meditation upon the twelve syllables,'

Verse 29 (skanda.6.256.29)

चातुर्मास्ये विशेषेण ब्रह्मदं चिंतितप्रदम् । एतदक्षरजं स्तोत्रं यः समाश्रयते सदा

cāturmāsye viśeṣeṇa brahmadaṁ ciṁtitapradam etadakṣarajaṁ stotraṁ yaḥ samāśrayate sadā

'especially during Chaturmasya it grants Brahman and grants what is desired. Whoever ever takes refuge in this hymn born of these syllables,'

Verse 30 (skanda.6.256.30)

मनसा कर्मणा वाचा तस्य नास्ति पुनर्भवः । द्वादशाक्षरसंयुक्तं चक्रद्वादशभूषितम्

manasā karmaṇā vācā tasya nāsti punarbhavaḥ dvādaśākṣarasaṁyuktaṁ cakradvādaśabhūṣitam

'in mind, deed, and word — for him there is no rebirth. Joined with the twelve syllables, adorned with the twelve discus-marks —'

Verse 31 (skanda.6.256.31)

मासद्वादशनामानि विष्णोर्यो भक्तितत्परः । शालग्रामेषु तान्युक्त्वा न्यसेदघहराणि च

māsadvādaśanāmāni viṣṇoryo bhaktitatparaḥ śālagrāmeṣu tānyuktvā nyasedaghaharāṇi ca

'whoever, intent on devotion, applies the twelve month-names of Vishnu, the removers of sin, upon the Shalagramas,'

Verse 32 (skanda.6.256.32)

दिवसेदिवसे तस्य द्वादशाहफलं लभेत् । द्वादशाक्षरमाहात्म्यं वर्णितुं नैव शक्यते

divasedivase tasya dvādaśāhaphalaṁ labhet dvādaśākṣaramāhātmyaṁ varṇituṁ naiva śakyate

'obtains, day by day, the fruit of twelve days. The glory of the twelve-syllabled mantra cannot indeed be described,'

Verse 33 (skanda.6.256.33)

जिह्वासहस्रैरपि च ब्रह्मणापि न वार्यते । महामन्त्रो ह्ययं लोके जप्यो ध्यातः स्तुतस्तथा

jihvāsahasrairapi ca brahmaṇāpi na vāryate mahāmantro hyayaṁ loke japyo dhyātaḥ stutastathā

'even with a thousand tongues, even by Brahma, it cannot be exhausted. This is indeed a great mantra in the world, to be recited, meditated upon, and likewise praised,'

Verse 34 (skanda.6.256.34)

पापहा सर्वमासेषु चातुर्मास्ये विशेषतः । इदं रहस्यं वेदानां पुराणानामनेकशः

pāpahā sarvamāseṣu cāturmāsye viśeṣataḥ idaṁ rahasyaṁ vedānāṁ purāṇānāmanekaśaḥ

'destroying sin in every month, especially during Chaturmasya. This is the secret of the Vedas, and of the Puranas in their many forms,'

Verse 35 (skanda.6.256.35)

स्मृतीनामपि सर्वासां द्वादशाक्षरचिन्तनम् । चिंतनादेव मर्त्यानां सिद्धिर्भवति हीप्सिता

smṛtīnāmapi sarvāsāṁ dvādaśākṣaracintanam ciṁtanādeva martyānāṁ siddhirbhavati hīpsitā

'and of all the Smritis as well — this meditation upon the twelve syllables. From meditation alone, the desired accomplishment comes to mortals,'

पुण्यदानेन याम्येन मुक्तिर्भवति शाश्वती । वर्णैस्तथाश्रमैरेव प्रणवेन समन्वितैः

puṇyadānena yāmyena muktirbhavati śāśvatī varṇaistathāśramaireva praṇavena samanvitaiḥ

'through meritorious giving, joined with restraint, eternal liberation arises. By the varnas and the ashramas, when joined with the Pranava,'

जपैर्ध्यानैः शमपरैर्मोक्षं यास्येत निश्चितम् । शूद्राणां चापि नारीणां प्रणवेन विवर्जितः

japairdhyānaiḥ śamaparairmokṣaṁ yāsyeta niścitam śūdrāṇāṁ cāpi nārīṇāṁ praṇavena vivarjitaḥ

'through recitations and meditations, intent on tranquillity, one shall certainly attain liberation. But for shudras, and likewise for women, the Pranava is excluded,'

प्रकृतीनां च सर्वासां न मन्त्रो द्वादशाक्षरः । न जपो न तपः कार्यं कायक्लेशाद्विशुद्धिता

prakṛtīnāṁ ca sarvāsāṁ na mantro dvādaśākṣaraḥ na japo na tapaḥ kāryaṁ kāyakleśādviśuddhitā

'and for all other classes of people as well, the twelve-syllabled mantra is not prescribed. Neither recitation nor austerity is to be performed by them — their purification comes through bodily effort,'

Verse 39 (skanda.6.256.39)

विप्रभक्त्या च दानेन विष्णुध्यानेन सिद्ध्यति । तासां मन्त्रो रामनाम ध्येयः कोट्यधिको भवेत्

viprabhaktyā ca dānena viṣṇudhyānena siddhyati tāsāṁ mantro rāmanāma dhyeyaḥ koṭyadhiko bhavet

'through devotion to brahmins, through giving, and through meditation on Vishnu, they attain success. For them, the mantra is the name of Rama, to be meditated upon, more powerful than a crore of others.'

Verse 40 (skanda.6.256.40)

रामेति द्व्यक्षरजपः सर्वपापापनोदकः । गच्छंस्तिष्ठञ्छयानो वा मनुजो रामकीर्तनात्

rāmeti dvyakṣarajapaḥ sarvapāpāpanodakaḥ gacchaṁstiṣṭhañchayāno vā manujo rāmakīrtanāt

'the recitation of the two syllables "Rama" removes every sin. Whether walking, standing, or lying down, a man, through the chanting of Rama,'

इह निर्वर्ततो याति प्रान्ते हरिगणो भवेत् । रामेति द्व्यक्षरो मन्त्रो मंत्रकोटिशताधिकः

iha nirvartato yāti prānte harigaṇo bhavet rāmeti dvyakṣaro mantro maṁtrakoṭiśatādhikaḥ

'when he departs from this world, at the end becomes one of Hari's host. The two-syllabled mantra "Rama" surpasses hundreds of crores of other mantras,'

Verse 42 (skanda.6.256.42)

सर्वासां प्रकृतीनां च कथितः पापनाशकः । चातुर्मास्येऽथ संप्राप्ते सोऽप्यनंतफलप्रदः

sarvāsāṁ prakṛtīnāṁ ca kathitaḥ pāpanāśakaḥ cāturmāsye'tha saṁprāpte so'pyanaṁtaphalapradaḥ

'and is declared to be the destroyer of sin for all classes of people. When Chaturmasya has come, it too becomes a bestower of endless fruit,'

Verse 43 (skanda.6.256.43)

चातुर्मास्ये महापुण्ये लभ्यते भक्तितत्परैः । देववन्निष्फलं तेषां यमलोकस्यसेवनम्

cāturmāsye mahāpuṇye labhyate bhaktitatparaiḥ devavanniṣphalaṁ teṣāṁ yamalokasyasevanam

'obtained during the greatly meritorious Chaturmasya by those intent on devotion; for them, like for the gods, any dread of the world of Yama becomes fruitless,'

Verse 44 (skanda.6.256.44)

न रामादधिकं किंचित्पठनं जगतीतले । रामनामाश्रया ये वै न तेषां यमयातना

na rāmādadhikaṁ kiṁcitpaṭhanaṁ jagatītale rāmanāmāśrayā ye vai na teṣāṁ yamayātanā

'there is nothing on the face of the earth to recite that is greater than Rama. Those who take refuge in the name of Rama do not suffer the torments of Yama,'

Verse 45 (skanda.6.256.45)

ये च दोषा विघ्नकरा मृतका विग्रहाश्च ये । रामनामैव विलयं यांति नात्र विचारणा

ye ca doṣā vighnakarā mṛtakā vigrahāśca ye rāmanāmaiva vilayaṁ yāṁti nātra vicāraṇā

'and whatever obstacle-causing faults there are, and whatever forms of the restless dead there are — by the name of Rama alone they are dissolved; there is no doubt of this,'

Verse 46 (skanda.6.256.46)

रमते सर्वभूतेषु स्थावरेषु चरेषु च । अन्तरात्मस्वरूपेण यच्च रामेति कथ्यते

ramate sarvabhūteṣu sthāvareṣu careṣu ca antarātmasvarūpeṇa yacca rāmeti kathyate

'for he delights in all beings, both immovable and moving, in the form of the inner self — and that is why he is called "Rama",'

Verse 47 (skanda.6.256.47)

रामेति मंत्रराजोऽयं भयव्याधिनिषूदकः । रणे विजयदश्चापि सर्वकार्यार्थसाधकः

rāmeti maṁtrarājo'yaṁ bhayavyādhiniṣūdakaḥ raṇe vijayadaścāpi sarvakāryārthasādhakaḥ

'this "Rama" is the king of mantras, the destroyer of fear and disease; it grants victory in battle too, and accomplishes every purpose and every task,'

Verse 48 (skanda.6.256.48)

सर्वतीर्थफलः प्रोक्तो विप्राणामपि कामदः । रामचन्द्रेति रामेति रामेति समुदाहृतः

sarvatīrthaphalaḥ prokto viprāṇāmapi kāmadaḥ rāmacandreti rāmeti rāmeti samudāhṛtaḥ

'it is declared to be the fruit of all sacred fords, and it grants desires even to brahmins. As "Ramachandra," as "Rama," as "Rama" is it repeatedly uttered —'

द्व्यक्षरो मन्त्रराजोऽयं सर्वकार्यकरो भुवि । देवा अपि प्रगायंति रामनामगुणाकरम्

dvyakṣaro mantrarājo'yaṁ sarvakāryakaro bhuvi devā api pragāyaṁti rāmanāmaguṇākaram

'this king of mantras, of two syllables, accomplishes every task upon the earth. The gods too sing forth the name of Rama, the mine of virtues,'

Verse 50 (skanda.6.256.50)

तस्मात्त्वमपि देवेशि रामनाम सदा वद । रामनाम जपेद्यो वै मुच्यते सर्वकिल्बिषैः

tasmāttvamapi deveśi rāmanāma sadā vada rāmanāma japedyo vai mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ

'therefore, O queen of the gods, you too should ever utter the name of Rama. Whoever recites the name of Rama is freed from every sin,'

Verse 51 (skanda.6.256.51)

सहस्रनामजं पुण्यं रामनाम्नैव जायते । चातुर्मास्ये विशेषेण तत्पुण्यं दशधोत्तरम्

sahasranāmajaṁ puṇyaṁ rāmanāmnaiva jāyate cāturmāsye viśeṣeṇa tatpuṇyaṁ daśadhottaram

'and the merit born of a thousand names arises by the name of Rama alone; especially during Chaturmasya, that merit becomes tenfold and more,'

हीनजातिप्रजातानां महदह्यति पातकम्

hīnajātiprajātānāṁ mahadahyati pātakam

रामो ह्ययं विश्वमिदं समयं स्वतेजसा व्याप्य जनांतरात्मना । पुनाति जन्मांतरपातकानि स्थूलानि सूक्ष्माणि क्षणाच्च दग्ध्वा

rāmo hyayaṁ viśvamidaṁ samayaṁ svatejasā vyāpya janāṁtarātmanā punāti janmāṁtarapātakāni sthūlāni sūkṣmāṇi kṣaṇācca dagdhvā

This Rama indeed, pervading this entire universe with his own radiance, present as the inner self of every being, purifies the sins of former births — both gross and subtle — burning them away in an instant.
