Nagara Khanda · Chapter 278
The Twelve Adityas and the Tale of Yajnavalkya
Verse 1 (skanda.6.278.1)
sūta uvāca ye cānye bhāskarā statra saṁti brāhmaṇasattamāḥ hāṭakeśvaraje kṣetre yājñavalkyapratiṣṭhitāḥ
Suta said: O foremost of brahmins, there are also other Sun-forms there, established by Yajnavalkya in the field of Hatakeshvara.
Verse 2 (skanda.6.278.2)
yastānpūjayate bhaktyā hṛdi kṛtvā'bhivāṁchitān saptamyāṁ caiva saptamyāṁ labhate nātra saṁśayaḥ
Whoever worships them with devotion, holding his desires in his heart, on each and every Saptami — he obtains them, without doubt.
Verse 3 (skanda.6.278.3)
ṛṣaya ucuḥ eka eva sthitaḥ sūryo dṛśyate ca nabhastale tatkathaṁ dvādaśaite ca tatra kṣetre pratiṣṭhitāḥ kasminkāle tathā kṛtye kimarthaṁ sūtanandana
The sages said: Only a single sun is seen standing in the sky — how then did these twelve come to be established in that field? At what time, by what act, and for what purpose, O son of Suta?
Verse 4 (skanda.6.278.4)
sūta uvāca āsītpūrvaṁ kṛtirnāma śunaḥśepasamudbhavaḥ
Suta said: There was formerly one named Kriti, born of Shunahshepa.
Verse 5 (skanda.6.278.5)
tasya putraḥ śunaḥ putro babhūva munisattamaḥ cārāyaṇaḥ sutastasya vabhūva munisattamaḥ
His son was the great sage Shunahputra; his son in turn was the great sage Charayana.
Verse 6 (skanda.6.278.6)
kasyacittvatha kālasya brahmā loka pitāmahaḥ sāvitrīśāpanirdagdho hyavatīrṇo dharātale
After some time, Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, burnt by Savitri's curse, descended to the earth.
Verse 7 (skanda.6.278.7)
gāyatrī ca yadā viprāstenoḍhā yajñakarmaṇi prāksthitāṁ ca parityajya sarvadevasamāgame kālātyayo bhavennaiva sāvitryāgamane sthire
O brahmins, when Gayatri was wedded by him during a sacrificial rite — Savitri having been previously set aside, so that no delay in the auspicious moment might occur, since all the gods had assembled while awaiting Savitri's fixed arrival...
Verse 8 (skanda.6.278.8)
tatastasya samādeśādgāyatrī gopakanyakā śakreṇa ca samānītā divyalakṣaṇalakṣitā
...then, by his own command, Gayatri, a cowherd's daughter, marked with divine signs, was brought by Indra.
Verse 9 (skanda.6.278.9)
gopakanyāṁ ca tāṁ jñātvā gośca vaktreṇa padmajaḥ praveśyākarṣayāmāsa guhyena ca tataḥ param
Knowing her to be a cowherd's daughter, the lotus-born Brahma had her enter through the mouth of a cow, and drew her out again through its secret part.
Verse 10 (skanda.6.278.10)
brāhmaṇānāṁ gavāṁ caiva kulamekaṁ dvidhā sthitam ekatra mantrāstiṣṭhaṁti havirekatra saṁsthitam
The lineage of brahmins and of cows is a single family divided in two: in the one abide the mantras, in the other the oblation.
Verse 11 (skanda.6.278.11)
tena tāṁ brāhmaṇīṁ kṛtvā paścāttasyāḥ parigraham gṛhyoktavidhinā cakre puraḥstho'pi pitāmahaḥ
By this, having made her into a brahmin-woman, the Grandsire, standing there present, then performed his marriage to her according to the household rite.
Verse 12 (skanda.6.278.12)
patnīśālopaviṣṭāyāṁ tatastasyāṁ dvijottamāḥ sāvitrī samanuprāptā devapatnībhirāvṛtā
O best of brahmins, then, while she sat in the wife's pavilion, Savitri arrived, surrounded by the wives of the gods.
Verse 13 (skanda.6.278.13)
tatastāṁ sā samālokya raśanāsamalaṁkṛtām daurbhāgyaduḥkhamāpannā śaśāpa ca vidhiṁ tataḥ
Then, seeing her adorned with the sacred girdle, overcome with the sorrow of her own misfortune, she cursed Brahma.
Verse 14 (skanda.6.278.14)
sāvitryuvāca yasmāttvayā parityaktā nirdoṣāhaṁ pitāmaha pitāmaho'si me nūnamadyaprabhṛti saṁgame
Savitri said: 'Since I, though blameless, have been cast aside by you, O Grandsire — from this day forward, you shall surely become nothing more than a grandfather to me in union...'
Verse 15 (skanda.6.278.15)
manuṣyāṇāṁ bhavetkṛtyamanyanārīparigrahaḥ etattvayā kṛtaṁ yasmānmā nuṣastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi
'...the taking of another woman is a deed fit only for men; since you have done this, may you become bound by human frailty yourself.'
Verse 16 (skanda.6.278.16)
kāmārtaśca viśeṣeṇa mama vākyādasaṁśayam
'And especially tormented by desire, without doubt, by my word.'
Verse 17 (skanda.6.278.17)
evamuktvā tu sāvitrī tyaktvā taṁ yajñamaṁḍapam gireḥ śikharamārūḍhā tapaścakre mahattataḥ
Having said this, Savitri left that sacrificial pavilion, ascended a mountain peak, and performed great austerity there.
Verse 18 (skanda.6.278.18)
pitāmaho'pi tacchāpāccārāyaṇaniveśane avatīrṇo dharāpṛṣṭhe kālena mahatā tataḥ
The Grandsire too, on account of that curse, after a long time, descended to the earth's surface, into the household of Charayana.
Verse 19 (skanda.6.278.19)
sa yadā yauvanaṁ bheje mānuṣaṁ ca purā sthitaḥ tathātathā ca tāpena kāmotthena prapīḍyate
When he, now existing in human form, attained youth, he became ever more tormented by the burning heat born of desire.
Verse 20 (skanda.6.278.20)
tato'sau vīkṣate nārīṁ kanyāṁ vātha tapasvinīm avikalpamanā bheje rūpasaubhāgyagarvitaḥ
Then, whatever woman he saw — maiden or ascetic — he approached her without hesitation, proud of his beauty and charm.
Verse 21 (skanda.6.278.21)
tatastaṁ byasanārtaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā cārāyaṇo muniḥ svayaṁ niḥsārayāmāsa prakopena nijāśramāt
Then, seeing him afflicted by this vice, the sage Charayana himself, in anger, drove him out of his own hermitage.
Verse 22 (skanda.6.278.22)
sa ca pitrā parityakto bhramamāṇastatastataḥ camatkārapuraṁ prāptaḥ śākalyo yatra tiṣṭhati
Cast off by his father, wandering here and there, he arrived at Chamatkarapura, where Shakalya dwelt.
Verse 23 (skanda.6.278.23)
nāmnā brāhmaṇaśārdūlo nāgaro vedapāragaḥ vṛtaḥ śiṣya sahasreṇa vedavidyāṁ pracārayan
...a tiger among brahmins by that name, a Nagara, master of the Vedas, surrounded by a thousand disciples, spreading the knowledge of the Vedas.
Verse 24 (skanda.6.278.24)
atha taṁ sa praṇamyoccaiḥ śiṣyatvaṁ samupāgataḥ vedādhyayanasaṁpanno babhūvātha cirādapi
Then, bowing low to him, he took up discipleship, and, after a long time, became accomplished in the study of the Vedas.
Verse 25 (skanda.6.278.25)
etasminneva kāle nu ānartādhipatiḥ svayam āgatastiṣṭhate yatra jalaśāyī hariḥ svayam
At that very time, the lord of Anarta himself came to where Hari himself lies upon the waters.
Verse 26 (skanda.6.278.26)
cāturmāsyavrataṁ tena gṛhītaṁ tatpurastadā prārthitastu tato viprāḥ śākalyastaina bhūbhujā
O brahmins, he then took up the four-month vow there; and the king then requested Shakalya.
Verse 27 (skanda.6.278.27)
śāṁtikaṁ pauṣṭikaṁ nityaṁ tvayā kāryaṁ mamālaye yāvattiṣṭhāmyahaṁ cātra prasādaḥ kriyatāmiti
'The peace-rite and prosperity-rite must be performed daily by you at my dwelling, for as long as I remain here — grant me this favor.'
Verse 28 (skanda.6.278.28)
bāḍhamityeva sa proktvā dākṣiṇyena dvijottamāḥ ekaikaṁ preṣayāmāsa svaśiṣyaṁ tasya maṁdire
Saying only 'So be it,' out of courtesy, O best of brahmins, he sent, one at a time, his own disciples to that king's palace.
Verse 29 (skanda.6.278.29)
sa śāṁtikaṁ vidhāyātha dattvāśīḥ pārthivasya ca saṁprāpya dakṣiṇāṁ tasmātpunareti ca taṁ dvijam
Each, having performed the peace-rite and given his blessing to the king, having received the fee, would return again to that brahmin.
Verse 30 (skanda.6.278.30)
śākalyāya ca tāṁ dattvā dakṣiṇāṁ nijamaṁdire jagāma nityamevaṁ hi vyavahāro vyavasthitaḥ
And having given that fee to Shakalya, he would return to his own dwelling; thus this practice went on daily, established as custom.
Verse 31 (skanda.6.278.31)
anyasminnahani prāpte śākalyena visarjitaḥ śāṁtyarthaṁ yājñavalkyastu pārthivasyaniveśanam
On another day, Yajnavalkya was sent by Shakalya, for the peace-rite, to the king's dwelling.
Verse 32 (skanda.6.278.32)
tasya bhūpasya rūpāḍhayā maṁtharāsti vilāsinī rātrau ca kāmitā tena kāmāḍhayena sukāminī
That king had a beautiful courtesan named Manthara; and, filled with desire, she had been made love to by him that very night — this most desirable woman.
Verse 33 (skanda.6.278.33)
bhāvairvātsyāyanaproktaiḥ samāliṁganapūrvakaiḥ sa tayā vividhaiḥ kṛtto mayūrapadakādibhiḥ śarīre cādhare caiva tathā maṇipravālakaiḥ
By the postures declared by Vatsyayana, beginning with embraces, and by various marks — the peacock-foot and others — she had been marked upon her body and upon her lip, and also with jeweled ornaments.
Verse 34 (skanda.6.278.34)
saṁprāpto'dhyayanārthāya yāvacchākalyasannidhau tāvatsaṁpreṣitastena śāṁtyarthaṁ bhūpamaṁdire
As soon as he arrived, for the sake of study, at Shakalya's presence, he was sent by him for the peace-rite to the king's palace.
Verse 35 (skanda.6.278.35)
so'pi saṁpreṣitastena gatvā taṁ pārthivālayam śāṁtikaṁ ca tataścakre yathoktavidhinā dvijāḥ
O brahmins, he too, sent by him, went to that royal dwelling and performed the peace-rite according to the prescribed procedure.
Verse 36 (skanda.6.278.36)
śāṁtikasyāvasāne tu pragṛhya kalaśodakam paṁcāṁgaiḥ kalpitaṁ rudraiḥ svayamevābhimaṁtritaiḥ
At the conclusion of the peace-rite, taking up the water of the vessel, arranged with the five limbs, consecrated by the Rudra-mantras recited by himself...
Verse 37 (skanda.6.278.37)
sākṣataṁ sumanoyuktaṁ samādāya gatastataḥ saṁtiṣṭhate nṛpo yatra ānarto tratasaṁyutaḥ
...taking it together with unbroken rice and flowers, he went to where the king of Anarta stood, engaged in his vow.
Verse 38 (skanda.6.278.38)
dyāmālekhīti maṁtraṁ sa proccārya vidhipūrvakam chaṁdarṣisahitaṁ caiva yāvatkṣipati mastake tāvannirīkṣitastena nakhalekhāvikartitaḥ
As soon as, having duly recited the mantra beginning dyām ālekhi, together with its meter and seer, he sprinkled it upon the king's head — at that very moment he noticed him, marked by a scratch made by fingernails.
Verse 39 (skanda.6.278.39)
khaṁḍitenādhareṇaiva tato'bhūddurmanā nṛpaḥ
With his very lip bruised, the king then became displeased.
Verse 40 (skanda.6.278.40)
viṭaprāyaṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā malināṁbaradhāriṇam taṁ provāca vihasyoccai dehi viprā'kṣatāñjalam
Seeing him looking almost like a rake, wearing soiled garments, he laughed loudly and said to him: 'O brahmin, give your handful of rice...'
Verse 41 (skanda.6.278.41)
maṁdurāyāṁ sthitaṁ yacca kāṣṭhametatpradṛśyate yājñavalkyastato dṛṣṭvā sakopastamupādravat
'...to that piece of wood standing in the stable, which is visible there.' Seeing this, Yajnavalkya, enraged, rushed toward it.
Verse 42 (skanda.6.278.42)
kṣiptvā tatra jalaṁ viprāḥ sākṣataṁ gṛhamāgamat agṛhya dakṣiṇāṁ tasya pārthivasya yathāsthitām
O brahmins, having flung the water together with the rice there upon it, he went home, without taking the fee that lay ready from that king.
Verse 43 (skanda.6.278.43)
etasminnaṁtare tasya dhavakāṣṭhasya sarvataḥ niṣkrāṁtā vividhāḥ śākhāḥ pallavaiḥ samalaṁkṛtāḥ
Meanwhile, from that piece of dhava-wood, on every side, various branches sprang forth, adorned with fresh leaves.
Verse 44 (skanda.6.278.44)
taddṛṣṭvā vismitaḥ so'tha ānartādhipatirnṛpaḥ paścāttāpaṁ paraṁ cakre dhiṅmayaivamanuṣṭhitam
Seeing this, that king, lord of Anarta, astonished, felt the deepest remorse: 'Shame on me, for having acted thus!'
Verse 45 (skanda.6.278.45)
'He must surely be some god who has come in the form of a brahmin, by whom such power as this abides in his mantra.'
Verse 46 (skanda.6.278.46)
yadyahaṁ pratigṛhṇāmi tasya mantroditaṁ jalam jarāmaraṇahīnastu tadbhavābhi na saṁśayaḥ
'If I were to receive that water declared by his mantra, I would surely become free of old age and death, without doubt.'
Verse 47 (skanda.6.278.47)
evaṁ ciṁtayatastasya taddinaṁ vismitasya ca pārthivasya dvijaśreṣṭhā jātaṁ varṣaśatopamam
O foremost of brahmins, while that astonished king thought thus, that single day became for him like a hundred years.
Verse 48 (skanda.6.278.48)
divase tu samākrāṁte kathaṁcittasya bhūpateḥ vibhāvarī kṣayaṁ yāti kathaṁcinnaiva śāradī
Though the day at last drew to a close for that king, the night seemed somehow never to wane, even in that clear autumn sky.
Verse 49 (skanda.6.278.49)
tataḥ prabhātasamaye samutthāya mahīpatiḥ āhvayāmāsa śākalyaṁ puruṣairāptakāribhiḥ
Then, at dawn, the king rose and summoned Shakalya by means of trusted servants.
Verse 50 (skanda.6.278.50)
tataḥ provāca vinayātsādaraṁ prāṁjaliḥ sthitaḥ kalye śiṣyaḥ samāyāto yastvadīyo mamāṁtikam
Then, standing with joined palms, humbly and respectfully, he said: 'Yesterday a disciple of yours came to my presence.'
Verse 51 (skanda.6.278.51)
śāṁtyarthaṁ preṣaṇīyastu so'dyāpi ca dvijottama tasyopari parā bhaktirmama jātā'dya kevalam
'O best of brahmins, that very one should be sent again today for the peace-rite; supreme devotion toward him alone has arisen in me today.'
Verse 52 (skanda.6.278.52)
sa tatheti pratijñāya gatvā'tha nijamandiram provāca yājñavalkyaṁ ca śāṁtyarthaṁ ślakṣṇayā girā
Agreeing 'so be it,' he went to his own dwelling and spoke to Yajnavalkya, in a gentle voice, for the peace-rite.
Verse 53 (skanda.6.278.53)
gaccha vatsa tvamadyaiva pārthivasya niveśanam śāṁtyarthaṁ tena bhūyo'pi tvamevāśunimaṁtritaḥ
'Go, my child, this very day, to the king's dwelling; for the peace-rite, you alone have been swiftly invited again by him.'
Verse 54 (skanda.6.278.54)
yājñavalkya uvāca nāhaṁ yāsyāmi taddharmye śāṁtyarthaṁ dvijapuṁgava anādareṇa dṛṣṭo'haṁ nāśīrme ca samāhṛtā
Yajnavalkya said: 'O foremost of brahmins, I shall not go for the peace-rite to that righteous man's house; I was looked upon with disrespect, and my blessing was not even accepted.'
Verse 55 (skanda.6.278.55)
kāṣṭhopari mayā dattā tasya vākyādasaṁśayam tasmātpreṣaya cānyaṁ tvaṁ guro śiṣyaṁ vicakṣaṇam ānartaṁ raṁjayedyastu vivekena samanvitam
'By his own word, I gave it upon a piece of wood instead, without doubt. Therefore, O guru, send some other capable disciple, one endowed with discernment, who may please Anarta.'
Verse 56 (skanda.6.278.56)
śākalya uvāca rājā''deśaḥ sadā kāryaḥ puruṣairdeśavāsibhiḥ yogakṣemavidhānāya tathā lābhāya kevalam
Shakalya said: 'A king's command must always be obeyed by the men dwelling in his land, for the sake of their own security and welfare, and for their benefit alone.'
Verse 57 (skanda.6.278.57)
'Whoever, O foremost of brahmins, sets himself against kings is a dull-witted man; happiness never comes to him in any way.'
Verse 58 (skanda.6.278.58)
ye jātyādi mahotsekānna nareṁdrānupāsate teṣāmāmaraṇaṁ bhikṣā prāyaścittaṁ vinirmitam
'Those who, out of pride in their birth and the like, do not serve kings — for them a lifetime of begging has been ordained as their atonement.'
Verse 59 (skanda.6.278.59)
evaṁ tayorvivadatostadā vai guruśiṣyayoḥ bhūyo'pi tatra saṁprāptāḥ puruṣāḥ pārthiveritāḥ
While the guru and disciple were thus disputing, more men, sent by the king, arrived there again.
Verse 60 (skanda.6.278.60)
procuśca tvarayā yuktāḥ śākalyaṁ prāṁjalisthitāḥ śiṣyaṁ taṁ preṣaya kṣipraṁ rājā mārgaṁ pratīkṣate
Filled with urgency, standing with joined palms, they said to Shakalya: 'Send that disciple at once; the king awaits him on the road.'
Verse 61 (skanda.6.278.61)
asakṛtprocyamāno'pi yadā gacchati naiva saḥ tadā saṁpreṣayāmāsa uddālakamathāruṇim
When, though repeatedly urged, he still would not go, he then sent Uddalaka Aruni instead.
Verse 62 (skanda.6.278.62)
śiṣyaṁ vinayasaṁpannaṁ kṛtāṁjalipuṭaṁ sthitam gaccha vatsa samādeśātsāṁprataṁ nṛpamaṁdiram
To that humble disciple, standing with joined palms, he said: 'Go, my child, at my command, now to the king's palace.'
Verse 63 (skanda.6.278.63)

sa tatheti pratijñāya gatvā taṁ pārthivālayam cakāra śāṁtikaṁ karma vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā
Agreeing 'so be it,' he went to that royal dwelling and performed the peace-rite, by the rite prescribed.
Verse 65 (skanda.6.278.65)

Then, taking the water of the vessel together with unbroken rice and flowers, he hurried to where the king stood.
Verse 66 (skanda.6.278.66)
rājovāca svakīyamantraliṁgena abhiṣekaṁ tu yaccha bhoḥ kāṣṭhasyāsya yadagre te protthitaṁ tiṣṭhate dvija
The king said: 'O brahmin, by your own mantra-sign, perform the sprinkling upon this piece of wood standing before you, that which has sprouted up.'
Verse 67 (skanda.6.278.67)
tatastena śubhaṁ maṁtraṁ procyābhīṣṭaṁ jalaṁ svayam abhiṣicya ca tatkāṣṭhaṁ tataśca svagṛhaṁ yayau
Then, having recited an auspicious mantra of his own choosing, and having sprinkled that water upon the wood, he himself then went to his own home.
Verse 68 (skanda.6.278.68)
tāvadrūpaṁ ca tatkāṣṭhaṁ dṛṣṭvā''narto mahīpatiḥ viṣādasahitaścaiva paścāttāpasamanvitaḥ
But the king of Anarta, seeing that the piece of wood remained just as it was, felt both dejection and remorse.
Verse 69 (skanda.6.278.69)
bhūyastu preṣayāmāsa yājñavalkyakṛte tadā anyaṁ dūtaṁ vidagdhaṁ ca śākalyasya dvijāśrayam
He then sent yet another skillful messenger to Shakalya's hermitage, for the sake of Yajnavalkya.
Verse 70 (skanda.6.278.70)
vedanā kāyasaṁsthā me vartate dvijasattama śāṁtyarthaṁ preṣayā kṣipraṁ taṁ śiṣyaṁ pūrvasaṁcitam

Verse 71 (skanda.6.278.71)
apamānaṁ kṛtaṁ tasya mayā kalye dvijottama tena me sahasā vyādhirāśīrvādamanicchataḥ
'O best of brahmins, I dishonored him yesterday; and because of that, since I refused his blessing, this sudden illness has come upon me.'
Verse 72 (skanda.6.278.72)
tasmātpreṣaya me śīghraṁ yena me svasthatā bhavem asakṛtprocyamāno'pi yadā naiva sa gacchati
'Therefore send him to me quickly, so that I may regain my health.' Though repeatedly urged, when he still would not go...
Verse 73 (skanda.6.278.73)
yājñavalkyastataḥ śiṣyamanyaṁ provāca sādaram tatastaṁ madhukaṁ paigyaṁ preṣayāmāsa tadgṛhe
...Yajnavalkya then respectfully spoke to another disciple; and he then sent that Madhuka Paingya to that house.
Verse 74 (skanda.6.278.74)
tenāpi vihitaṁ tacca yathoddālakanirmitam āśīrvādo nṛpoddeśāddattaḥ kāṣṭhasya tasya ca
He too performed it just as Uddalaka had done, and the blessing was given, at the king's direction, to that same piece of wood.
Verse 75 (skanda.6.278.75)
tadrūpamapi tatkāṣṭhaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhūyo'pi pārthivaḥ anyaṁ saṁpreṣayāmāsa yājñavalkyakṛte naram
Seeing that the wood still remained just as before, the king again sent yet another man for the sake of Yajnavalkya.
Verse 76 (skanda.6.278.76)
asakṛtprocyamāno'pi yājñavalkyo vrajenna hi yadā tadā bahuguṇamanyaṁ śiṣyaṁ pradiṣṭavān
When, though repeatedly urged, Yajnavalkya still would not go, he then appointed yet another, even more excellent, disciple.
Verse 77 (skanda.6.278.77)
pracūḍaṁ bhāgavittiṁ ca so'pi gatvā yathā purā cakāra śāṁtikaṁ karma yathā tābhyāṁ purā kṛtam
Prachuda Bhagavitti — he too, having gone, performed the peace-rite just as the other two had done before.
Verse 78 (skanda.6.278.78)
tataḥ śāṁtyudakaṁ tasminprākṣipaccaiva dāruṇi maṁtravacca tathāpyeva tadrūpaṁ ca vyavasthitam
Then he too cast the peace-water upon that wood, with mantra, just as before — yet its form remained unchanged.
Verse 79 (skanda.6.278.79)
tataḥ svayaṁ yayau rājā śākalyasya niveśanam yājñavalkyasya mantrārthaṁ paścāttāpasamanvitaḥ
Then the king himself, filled with remorse, went to Shakalya's dwelling, for the sake of Yajnavalkya's mantra.
Verse 80 (skanda.6.278.80)
praṇamya sa dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ śākalyaṁ ca dvijottamam śāṁtyarthaṁ mama harmye tvaṁ kalye śiṣyaṁ samādiśa yena me jāyate śāṁtiḥ śarīrasya dvijottama
Bowing to Shakalya, best of brahmins, that foremost of kings said: 'O best of brahmins, direct that same disciple to my palace tomorrow for the peace-rite, so that peace may come to my body.'
Verse 81 (skanda.6.278.81)
tataḥ provāca śākalyo yājñavalkyaṁ dvijottamāḥ bhūyo'pi śṛṇvatastasya ānartasya mahīpateḥ
O best of brahmins, then Shakalya spoke to Yajnavalkya again, while that king of Anarta himself listened.
Verse 82 (skanda.6.278.82)
yājñavalkya drutaṁ gaccha mamādeśānnṛpālayam rājñosya roganāśāya śāṁtikaṁ kuru putraka
'O Yajnavalkya, go quickly, by my command, to the king's palace; perform the peace-rite for the destruction of this king's disease, my child.'
Verse 83 (skanda.6.278.83)
yājñavalkya uvāca nāhaṁ tatra gamiṣyāmi guro maivaṁ bravīhi mām apamānaḥ kṛto'nena guro mama mahībhujā
Yajnavalkya said: 'I shall not go there, O guru; do not tell me this. This king dishonored me, O guru.'
Verse 84 (skanda.6.278.84)
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā sa kopaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ abravīdbhartsamānastu yājñavalkyaṁ tataḥ param
Hearing his words, he became filled with great wrath, and, rebuking him, spoke thereafter to Yajnavalkya.
Verse 85 (skanda.6.278.85)
ekamapyakṣaraṁ yastu guruḥ śiṣye nivedayet pṛthivyāṁ nāsti taddravyaṁ yaddattvā cānṛṇī bhavet
'There exists no wealth upon this earth by giving which one could ever become free of debt to a guru who imparts even a single syllable to a disciple.'
Verse 86 (skanda.6.278.86)
yasmāttvaṁ śiṣyatāṁ gatvā mama vākyaṁ karoṣi na tasmāttvāṁ yojayiṣyāmi brahma śāpena sāṁpratam
'Since you, having become my disciple, do not obey my word, I shall now bind you with a brahmin's curse.'
Verse 87 (skanda.6.278.87)
yājñavalkya uvāca anyāyena hi cecchāpaṁ guro mama pradāsyasi ahamapyeva dāsyāmi pratiśāpaṁ tavādhunā
Yajnavalkya said: 'If you, O guru, unjustly curse me, then I too shall now give you a curse in return.'
Verse 88 (skanda.6.278.88)
gurorapyavaliptasya kāryākāryamajānataḥ utpathe vartamānasya parityāgo vidhīyate
'Even of a guru, if he be arrogant, ignorant of what is fit and unfit to be done, and given to wrong conduct — abandonment of him is prescribed.'
Verse 89 (skanda.6.278.89)
tasmāttvaṁ hi mayā tyaktaḥ sāṁprataṁ hi na me guruḥ aviśaṣeṇa śiṣyārthaṁ yadādeśaṁ prayacchasi

śākalya uvāca yadi gacchasi cānyatra tattvaṁ vidyāṁ parityaja yāṁ mayā pāṭhitaḥ pāpa vraja paścātkuśiṣya bhoḥ
Shakalya said: 'If you go elsewhere, then abandon that very learning which was taught to you by me. Go, sinner, O wicked disciple, hereafter!'
Verse 92 (skanda.6.278.92)

Having said this, that excellent brahmin, having consecrated the water with Atharvan mantras, gave it to him to drink, for the sake of causing vomiting.
Verse 94 (skanda.6.278.94)
yājñavalkyo'pi tatpītvā jalaṁ tenābhimaṁtritam vāṁtiṁ kṛtvā sahānnena tadvidyāṁ tāṁ parityajat
Yajnavalkya too, having drunk that water consecrated by him, vomited, and, along with the food, gave up that learning.

'...by which sin is destroyed, whether they be expounded or recited — declare those to me quickly; this shall be my guru's fee.' Yajnavalkya said: 'Then come with me, to where the twelve suns, established by me, stand; I shall recite them there.'
Verse 119 (skanda.6.278.119)
tacchrutvā śiṣyasaṁyuktaḥ śākalyastaiśca saddvijaiḥ śiṣyaistiṣṭhanti ye tatra sthāpitāstena bhāskarāḥ
Hearing this, Shakalya, together with his disciples, and with those good brahmins — the disciples who dwelt there — went to where the suns had been established.
Verse 120 (skanda.6.278.120)

avasāne ca teṣāṁ tu catuścaraṇasaṁbhavaiḥ brāhmaṇairyājñavalkyastu vedāntajñaiḥ pratoṣitaḥ
At the conclusion of it, Yajnavalkya was gratified by those brahmins, born of the four orders, knowers of the Vedanta.
Verse 122 (skanda.6.278.122)

Yajnavalkya said: 'O brahmins, whatever brahmins recite this before these suns of mine — let them, by your grace, attain the path to heaven; this shall be my guru's fee.'
Verse 124 (skanda.6.278.124)
ye punarbhaktisaṁyuktāḥ kariṣyaṁti vicāraṇam teṣāṁ turyapadaṁ yacca jarāmaraṇavarjitam
'And whoever, filled with devotion, shall further engage in reflection upon it — for them shall come the fourth state, free of old age and death.'
Verse 125 (skanda.6.278.125)
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ bhaviṣyati kalau viprā dausthyabhāvasamanvitāḥ paṭhane naiva śaktāśca vyākhyānasya ca kā kathā
The brahmins said: 'In the Kali age, brahmins shall become afflicted with hardship, unable even to recite — let alone expound.'
Verse 126 (skanda.6.278.126)
tasmātsārasvataṁ brūhi vedānāṁ dvijasattama api dausthyasamāyuktā yena te kīrtayaṁti ca
'Therefore, O foremost of brahmins, tell us the essence of the Vedas, by which even those beset by hardship may still recite them.'

yājñavalkya uvāca rathaṁ yuñjaṁti sūktaṁ yatprathamaṁ vittalakṣaṇam triṣṭubheti ca yatsūktaṁ tathādyaṁ brāhmaṇottamāḥ
Yajnavalkya said: 'O best of brahmins, first the hymn rathaṁ yuñjanti, marked as bestowing wealth; and the hymn in the Trishtubh meter as well, first among them...'
Verse 128 (skanda.6.278.128)
citraṁ devānāmiti ca tathānyattasya vallabham haṁsaḥ śuciṣadityuktaṁ tataścāpi praharṣadam

'...and the Pavamana hymn — whatever Rigvedic reciters recite these, first among their texts, shall attain the supreme goal.'
Verse 130 (skanda.6.278.130)
ekaviṁśatisāmāni ādityeṣṭāni yāni ca sāmagāḥ kīrtayiṣyaṁti ye'trasthāḥ śucayaḥ sthitāḥ
'The twenty-one Sama chants dedicated to Aditya — whatever pure Samavedins, established here, shall recite them...'
Verse 131 (skanda.6.278.131)
niścayaṁ tu paraṁ dhṛtvā ye'pi stoṣyaṁti bhāskaram tataste'pi prayāsyaṁti nirbhidya ravimaṁḍalam
'...and whoever, holding firm resolve, shall praise the sun — they too shall go on, piercing through the very orb of the sun.'
Verse 132 (skanda.6.278.132)
kṣurikāsaṁpuṭaṁ caiva sūryakalpaṁ tathaiva ca śāṁtikalpasamāyuktaṁ kīrtayiṣyaṁti ye dvijāḥ
'And whatever brahmins shall recite the Kshurika-samputa, and likewise the Surya-kalpa, joined with the Shanti-kalpa...'

atharvapāṭhakāste'pi prayāsyaṁti parāṁ gatim mūrkhā api samāgatya saṁprāpte sūryavāsare
'...those reciters of the Atharva too shall attain the supreme goal. And even fools, having gathered together, when Sunday arrives...'
Verse 134 (skanda.6.278.134)
praṇāmaṁ ye kariṣyaṁti śraddhayā parayā yutāḥ saptarātrakṛtātpāpānmuktiṁ prāpsaṁti te dvijāḥ
'...whoever, filled with supreme faith, shall offer a bow — those brahmins shall obtain freedom from the sins of the preceding seven nights.'
Verse 135 (skanda.6.278.135)
sūta uvāca tatheti taiḥ pratijñāte catuścaraṇasaṁbhavaiḥ brāhmaṇairyājñavalkyastu vijñāto yena kena tu
Suta said: When those brahmins, born of the four orders, had thus agreed 'so be it,' Yajnavalkya became known far and wide, by one means or another.
Verse 136 (skanda.6.278.136)
videhena tataḥ prāptaḥ śravaṇārthaṁ narādhipaḥ vedāṁtānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ ratnākhyena mahībhujā
Then a king of Videha, named Ratna, came to him for the sake of hearing all the Vedantic teachings.
Verse 137 (skanda.6.278.137)
tenāpi ca parijñāya māhātmyaṁ sūryasaṁ bhavam tataḥ saṁsthāpitaḥ sūryastasminsthāne dvijottamāḥ
O best of brahmins, he too, having learned of the greatness arisen from the sun, thereupon had the sun established in that place.
Verse 138 (skanda.6.278.138)
taṁ cāpi sūryavāreṇa yaḥ prapaśyati mānavaḥ saptarātrakṛtātpāpānmucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
And whatever man beholds him on Sunday is freed, without doubt, from the sins of the preceding seven nights.
Verse 139 (skanda.6.278.139)
etadvaḥ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ māhātmyaṁ sūryasaṁbhavam yaḥ śṛṇoti naro bhaktyā aśvamedhaphalaṁ labhet
Thus this entire greatness arisen from the sun has been told to you; whatever man hears it with devotion obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
Verse 140 (skanda.6.278.140)
saṁkrāṁtau yatpradānena sūrye vā śravaṇena tu tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti śrutvā māhātmyamutamam
Whatever fruit comes from donation at the solstice, or from hearing praise of the sun — that very fruit is obtained by hearing this excellent greatness.
