Nagara Khanda · Chapter 33

The Glory of Agastya's Hermitage

Chapter 32All chaptersChapter 34

Verse 1 (skanda.6.33.1)

sūta uvāca | agastyasyāśramo'nyosti tathā tatra dvijottamāḥ | yatra tiṣṭhati viśvātmā svayaṁ devo maheśvaraḥ

Suta said: O best of brahmins, there is also there another hermitage of Agastya, where the great god Maheshvara, the soul of the universe, himself dwells.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.33.2)

śuklapakṣe caturdaśyāṁ caitramāse divākaraḥ | svayamabhyetya deveśaṁ pūjayatyeva śaṁkaram

On the fourteenth of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, the Sun himself comes there and worships the lord of gods, Shankara.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.33.3)

tasmādanyo'pi yastasyāṁ bhaktyā cāgatya śaṁkaram | tameva pūjayedbhaktyā sa yāti devamandiram

Therefore, whoever else comes there on that day and worships Shankara with devotion attains the abode of the god.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.33.4)

yastatra kurute śrāddhaṁ samyakchraddhāsamanvitaḥ | pitarastasya tṛpyaṁte pitṛmedhe kṛte yathā

Whoever performs shraddha there properly, with full faith, his ancestors are satisfied just as they would be by the performance of the great ancestral sacrifice.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.33.5)

ṛṣayaḥ uvāca | agastyasyāśramaṁ prāpya kasmāddevo divākaraḥ | pradakṣiṇāṁ prakurute vadaitanme suvistaram

The sages said: Why does the Sun-god, on reaching Agastya's hermitage, circumambulate it? Tell us this in full detail.

Verse 6 (skanda.6.33.6)

sūta uvāca | kathayāmi kathāmetāṁ śṛṇuta dvija sattamāḥ | asti viṁdhya iti khyātaḥ parvataḥ pṛthivītale

Suta said: Listen, O best of brahmins, I shall tell this tale. There is, upon the earth, a mountain renowned by the name Vindhya.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.33.7)

yasya vṛkṣāgraśākhāyāṁ saṁlagnāstaraṇeḥ karāḥ | puṣpapūgā ivādhaḥsthairlakṣyaṁte mugdhasi ddhakaiḥ

On whose treetops the sun's rays, caught in the topmost branches, appear to the innocent siddhas standing below as though they were clusters of flowers.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.33.8)

anabhijñāstamisrasya yasya sānunivāsinaḥ | ratnaprabhāpraṇunnasya kṛṣṇapakṣaniśāsvapi

Whose mountain-dwellers, upon its ridges, know nothing of darkness, since the radiance of its gems dispels the night even during the dark fortnight.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.33.9)

yasya sānuṣu muṁcaṁto bhāṁti puṣpāṇi pādapāḥ | vāyuvegavaśānnūnaṁ nīraugha nīradā iva

On whose ridges the trees, scattering their blossoms in the force of the wind, shine forth like rain-clouds pouring down showers of water.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.33.10)

yasminnānāmṛgā bhāṁti dhāvamānā itastataḥ | kalatraputrapuṣṭyarthaṁ lobhārthaṁ mānavā iva

On which mountain the various deer, running hither and thither, appear just like men, running about out of greed to provide for their wives and children.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.33.11)

niryāsacchadmanā bāṣpaṁ vāsitāśeṣadiṅmukham | muñcaṁti taravo yatra dantidantakṣatatvacaḥ

Where the trees, their bark torn by the tusks of elephants, seem to shed tears in the guise of their resin, perfuming every quarter of the sky.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.33.12)

cīrikāvirutairdīrghai rudaṁta iva cāpare | hastihastahatā vṛkṣā manyante yasya sānuṣu

On whose ridges other trees, struck by the trunks of elephants, seem, through the long cries of birds, as though they were weeping.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.33.13)

itaścetaśca gacchadbhirnirjharāṁbhobhirāvṛtaḥ | śuśubhe sitavastrāḍhyaiḥ pumāniva vibhūṣitaḥ

That mountain, girded round by the waters of streams flowing this way and that, shone forth like a man adorned in garments of white.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.33.14)

yasya sparddhā samutpannā pūrvaṁ saha sumeruṇā | tataḥ prāha sahasrāṁśuṁ gatvā sa krodhamūrcchitaḥ

That mountain once conceived a rivalry with Mount Sumeru; then, overcome with rage, he went to the Sun and said --

Verse 15 (skanda.6.33.15)

kasmādbhāskara merostvaṁ prakaroṣi pradakṣiṇām | kulaparvatasaṁjñe'pi na karoṣi kathaṁ mayi

"O Bhaskara, why do you circumambulate Meru? Why do you not circumambulate me, who am likewise called a great mountain?"

Verse 16 (skanda.6.33.16)

bhāskara uvāca | na vayaṁ śraddhayā tasya gireḥ kurmaḥ pradakṣiṇām | eṣa me vihitaḥ panthā yenedaṁ vihitaṁ jagat

Bhaskara said: It is not out of devotion that we circumambulate that mountain; this path was fixed for me by him who ordained this entire universe.

Verse 17 (skanda.6.33.17)

tasya tuṁgāni śṛṁgāṇi vyāpya khaṁ saṁśritāni ca | tena saṁjāyate tasya balādeva pradakṣiṇā

His lofty peaks pervade and rest upon the sky itself; it is for this reason alone -- by sheer necessity, not devotion -- that circumambulation of him comes about.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.33.18)

etacchrutvā viśeṣeṇa saṁkruddho viṁdhyaparvataḥ | provāca paśya bhāno tvaṁ tarhi tuṁgatvamadya me | rurodhātha nabhomārgaṁ yena gacchati bhāskaraḥ

Hearing this, Mount Vindhya grew intensely enraged and said, "Behold, O Sun, my own loftiness this very day!" -- and he blocked the very path of the sky along which the Sun travels.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.33.19)

atha ruddhaṁ samālokya mārgaṁ vāsaranāyakaḥ | cintayāmāsa citte sve sāṁprataṁ kiṁ karomyaham

Seeing his path blocked, the lord of the day, the Sun, fell to thinking within himself: What am I to do now?

Verse 20 (skanda.6.33.20)

karomi yadyahaṁ cāsya parvatasya pradakṣiṇām | tadbhaviṣyati kālasya calanaṁ bhuvanatraye

If I begin to circumambulate this mountain, the very motion of time in the three worlds will be thrown into disorder.

Verse 21 (skanda.6.33.21)

māsartubhuvanānāṁ ca tathā bhāvī viparyayaḥ | agniṣṭomādikāḥ sarvāḥ kriyā yāsyaṁti saṁkṣayam | naṣṭayajñotsave loke devānāṁ syānmahāvyathā

There would then follow a reversal of months, seasons, and worlds; all the rites, from the Agnishtoma sacrifice onward, would come to ruin; and with sacrificial festivals lost, the gods themselves would suffer great distress.

Verse 22 (skanda.6.33.22)

evaṁ saṁcintya cittena bahudhā tīkṣṇadīdhitiḥ | jagāma manasā bhītaḥ so'gastyaṁ munipuṁgavam

Having thus deliberated at length within his mind, the radiant Sun, filled with fear, went to that foremost of sages, Agastya.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.33.23)

nānyosti vāraṇe śakto viṁdhasyāsya hi taṁ vinā | agastyaṁ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaṁ mitrāvaruṇasaṁbhavam

For there was none capable of checking this Vindhya save Agastya alone, that foremost of brahmins, born of Mitra and Varuna.

Verse 24 (skanda.6.33.24)

Then that radiant one, assuming the form of a brahmin, went to Agastya's hermitage in the field of Chamatkarapura.

Verse 25 (skanda.6.33.25)

tatastu vaiśvadevāṁte vedoccāraparāyaṇaḥ | provāca so'tithiḥ prāptastavāhaṁ munisattama

At the close of the Vaishvadeva rite, to Agastya, who was intent on the recitation of the Veda, he said: O foremost of sages, I have come to you as a guest.

Verse 26 (skanda.6.33.26)

tato'gastyaḥ kṛtānandaḥ svāgataṁ te mahāmune | manoratha ivādhyāto yo'gnikāryāṁta āgataḥ

Then Agastya, filled with joy, said: Welcome, O great sage; you have come, just as though summoned by my own heart's wish, at the very close of my fire-rite.

Verse 27 (skanda.6.33.27)

tattvaṁ brūhi muniśreṣṭha yaddadāmi tavepsitam | adeyaṁ nāsti me kiñcitkāle'sminprārthitasya ca

"Tell me, O foremost of sages, what I may give you that you desire; there is nothing at this time, once asked, that I cannot give."

Verse 28 (skanda.6.33.28)

bhāskara uvāca | ahaṁ bhāskara āyāto viprarūpeṇa sanmune | sarvakāryakṣamaṁ matvā tvāmekaṁ bhuvanatraye

Bhaskara said: O worthy sage, I am the Sun, come here in the guise of a brahmin, knowing you alone, in all three worlds, to be capable of accomplishing every task.

Verse 29 (skanda.6.33.29)

tvayā pūrvaṁ surārthāya prapītaḥ payasāṁnidhiḥ | vātāpiśca tathā daityo bhakṣito dvijakaṇṭakaḥ

It was you who once, for the sake of the gods, drank up the ocean, and who devoured the demon Vatapi, that thorn in the side of brahmins.

Verse 30 (skanda.6.33.30)

tasmādgatirbhavāsmākaṁ sāṁprataṁ munisattama | devānāmiha varṇānāṁ tvameva śaraṇaṁ yataḥ

Therefore, O foremost of sages, you alone are now our refuge, since for the gods and for all the classes of humankind here, you alone are the shelter.

Verse 31 (skanda.6.33.31)

sūta uvāca | tacchrutvā sa munirviprā viśeṣeṇa praharṣitaḥ | arghyaṁ dattvā dineśāya tataḥ provāca sādaram

Suta said: Hearing this, that sage was greatly pleased, and, having offered arghya to the lord of the day, respectfully said --

Verse 32 (skanda.6.33.32)

dhanyo'smyanugṛhītosmi yanme tvaṁ gṛhamāgataḥ | tasmādbrūhi kariṣyāmi tava vākyamakhaṁḍitam

"I am blessed, I am favored, that you have come to my house; therefore speak, I shall carry out your word entirely."

Verse 33 (skanda.6.33.33)

bhāskara uvāca | eṣa viṁdhyācalo'smākaṁ mārgamāvṛtya saṁsthitaḥ | sparddhayā girimukhyasya sumerormunisatama

Bhaskara said: O foremost of sages, this Vindhya, out of rivalry with Sumeru, the chief of mountains, stands blocking our path.

Verse 34 (skanda.6.33.34)

sāmādyairvividhopāyaistasmādenaṁ nivāraya | kālātyayo yathā na syādgaterbhaṁgastathā kuru

Therefore, by conciliation and other various means, restrain him, and act so that my course is not obstructed, lest the order of time itself be violated.

Verse 35 (skanda.6.33.35)

agastya uvāca | ahaṁ te vārayiṣyāmi vardhamānaṁ kulācalam | svasthānaṁ gaccha tasmāttvaṁ sukhībhava divākara

Agastya said: I shall check this ever-growing great mountain; therefore go to your own place, O Sun, and be at ease.

Verse 36 (skanda.6.33.36)

sūta uvāca | tataḥ sa preṣitastena bhāskarastīkṣṇadīdhitiḥ | svaṁ sthānaṁ prayayau hṛṣṭastamāmaṁtrya munīśvaram

Suta said: Then, dismissed by him, the radiant Sun, taking leave of that lord of sages, went happily to his own place.

Verse 37 (skanda.6.33.37)

agastyo'pi drutaṁ gatvā viṁdhyaṁ provāca sādaram | nyūnatāṁ vraja madvākyācchīghraṁ parvatasattama

Agastya, too, going quickly, said respectfully to Vindhya: O best of mountains, at my word, lower yourself at once.

Verse 38 (skanda.6.33.38)

dākṣiṇātyeṣu tīrtheṣu snāne jātādya me matiḥ | tavāyattā gire saiva tatkuruṣva yathocitam

It is my wish today to bathe in the sacred fords of the southern lands; O mountain, that wish rests on you alone, so do what is fitting.

Verse 39 (skanda.6.33.39)

sūta uvāca | sa tasya vacanaṁ śrutvā viṁdhyaḥ parvatasattamaḥ | abhajannimnatāṁ sadyo vinayena samanvitaḥ

Suta said: Hearing his word, Vindhya, best of mountains, with all humility, at once lowered himself.

Verse 40 (skanda.6.33.40)

agastyo'pi samāsādya tasyāṁtaṁ dakṣiṇaṁ dvijāḥ | tvayaivaṁ saṁsthitenātha sthātavyamityuvāca tam

O brahmins, Agastya, having reached his southern end, said to him: You must remain fixed exactly in this state,

Verse 41 (skanda.6.33.41)

yāvadāgamanaṁ mahyaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā | no cecchāpaṁ pradāsyāmi yena saṁyāsyasi kṣayam

until I return -- there is no need to question this. Otherwise I shall pronounce upon you a curse that will bring about your utter ruin.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.33.42)

Saying "So be it," that best of mountains, fearing the curse, never again grew, ever awaiting his return.

Verse 43 (skanda.6.33.43)

so'pi tenaivamārgeṇa nivṛttiṁ na karoti ca | yāvadadyāpi vipreṁdrā dakṣiṇāṁ diśamāśritaḥ

O foremost of brahmins, for this very reason Agastya, too, never returns by that path, so that even today he remains established in the southern quarter.

Verse 44 (skanda.6.33.44)

atha tatraiva cānīya lopāmudrāṁ munīśvaraḥ | samāhūya sahasrāṁśuṁ tataḥ provāca sādaram

Then that lord of sages, bringing Lopamudra to that very place, summoned the thousand-rayed Sun and said respectfully --

Verse 45 (skanda.6.33.45)

tava vākyānmayā tyaktaḥ svāśramastīkṣṇadīdhite | tavārthe ca na gaṁtavyaṁ bhūyastatra kathaṁcana

O radiant one, for your sake I have given up my own hermitage, and for your sake I can never again go back there in any way.

Verse 46 (skanda.6.33.46)

tasmānmadvacanādbhāno caturdaśyāṁ madhau site | yanmayā sthāpitaṁ tatra liṁgaṁ pūjyaṁ hi tattvayā

Therefore, O Sun, at my word, on the fourteenth of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, you must worship that linga which I have established there.

Verse 47 (skanda.6.33.47)

bhāskara uvāca | evaṁ mune kariṣyāmi tava vākyādasaṁśayam | pūjayiṣyāmi talliṁgaṁ varṣāṁte svayameva hi

Bhaskara said: So it shall be, O sage; at your word I shall have no doubt in this -- at the close of each year I myself shall worship that linga.

Verse 48 (skanda.6.33.48)

yo'nyo hi taddine liṁgaṁ pūjayiṣyati mānavaḥ | mama lokaṁ samāsādya sa bhaviṣyati muktibhāk

Whatever other man worships that linga on that day shall reach my own world and become a partaker of liberation.

Verse 49 (skanda.6.33.49)

sūta uvāca | etasmātkāraṇāttatra bhagavāṁstīkṣṇadīdhitiḥ | caitraśuklacaturdaśyāṁ sāṁnidhyaṁ kurute sadā

Suta said: For this very reason, the blessed radiant Sun ever maintains his presence there on the fourteenth of the bright fortnight of Chaitra.

Verse 50 (skanda.6.33.50)

etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ yatpṛṣṭosmi dvijottamāḥ | bhūyo vadata vai kaścitsaṁdehaśce ddhṛdi sthitaḥ

O best of brahmins, all that you asked of me I have now related; if any doubt still remains in your hearts, speak it again.
