The sages said: You have told us the glory of mantra recitation -- but how, O son of Suta, does such recitation actually attain its accomplishment?
Verse 42 (skanda.6.36.42)
sūta uvāca | atra tatkathayiṣyāmi yanmayā pitṛtaḥ śrutam | vadato brāhmaṇeṁdrasya purā durvāsaso muneḥ
Suta said: On this I shall tell what I heard from my own father, at the time when the foremost of brahmins, the sage Durvasa, once posed this very question.
Verse 43 (skanda.6.36.43)

O brahmins, listen with composed minds to what Durvasa once asked my own father regarding the accomplishment of mantras.

Verse 45 (skanda.6.36.45)
lomaharṣaṇa uvāca | maṁtrāṇāṁ sādhanaṁ kaṣṭaṁ sarveṣāmapi sanmune | pratyavāyasamopetaṁ bahucchidrasamākulam
Lomaharshana said: O worthy sage, the accomplishment of any mantra is arduous, fraught with pitfalls, and beset by many flaws.
Verse 46 (skanda.6.36.46)

Therefore, O brahmin, if you desire the accomplishment of a mantra, you should go to the field of Chamatkarapura.
Verse 47 (skanda.6.36.47)
tatra citreśvarīpīṭhamagastyena vinirmitam | sadyaḥ siddhikaraṁ proktaṁ mantrāṇāṁ hṛdi vartinām
There is the Chitreshvari shrine established by Agastya, said to bring immediate accomplishment to mantras held firmly in the heart.
Verse 48 (skanda.6.36.48)
na tatra jāyate chidraṁ pratyavāyo na ca dvija | nāsiddhirvaradānena sarveṣāṁ tridivaukasām
There, no flaw arises, no misstep, O brahmin, nor is there any failure, thanks to the boon granted by all the dwellers of heaven.
Verse 49 (skanda.6.36.49)
cāturyuṁgyaṁ hi tatpīṭhaṁ sthitānāṁ siddhimāharet | yugānurūpataḥ sadyastato vakṣyāmyahaṁ dvija
That shrine grants accomplishment to those established there throughout all four ages, each in accordance with its own age; therefore, O brahmin, I shall now explain this.
Verse 50 (skanda.6.36.50)
yo yaṁ sādhayituṁ mantramicchati dvijasattama | sa tasya pūrvamevātha lakṣamekaṁ japennaraḥ
O foremost of brahmins, whatever mantra a man wishes to accomplish, he must first recite it one hundred thousand times.
Verse 51 (skanda.6.36.51)
Then that purified man becomes fit for the mantra; O tiger among brahmins, he should then recite it four hundred thousand times, and offer a tenth part of that number as oblation into a well-kindled fire.
Verse 52 (skanda.6.36.52)
tatastu jāyate siddhirnūnaṁ tanmaṁtrasaṁbhavā | tatra saumyeṣu kṛtyeṣu homaḥ siddhārthakaiḥ sitaiḥ
Then the accomplishment born of that mantra surely comes to him. For peaceful rites, the oblation should be of white mustard seeds,
Verse 53 (skanda.6.36.53)

O foremost of brahmins, along with jasmine flowers and the feeding of brahmins. For fierce rites, however, the oblation, made with red flowers together with guggulu, and accompanied by offerings honoring young maidens, bears its fruit.
Verse 54 (skanda.6.36.54)
etatkṛtayuge proktaṁ maṁtrasādhanamuttamam | sarveṣāṁ sādhakānāṁ ca mayā proktaṁ dvijottama
O best of brahmins, this excellent procedure for the accomplishment of mantras I have declared for the Krita Yuga, applicable to all practitioners.
Verse 55 (skanda.6.36.55)
etattretāyuge proktaṁ pādonaṁ mantrasādhanam | yugmārdhaṁ dvāpare kāryaṁ caturthāṁśaṁ kalau yuge
In the Treta Yuga, this same procedure is prescribed at three-quarters its measure; in Dvapara, at half; and in the Kali Yuga, only a quarter part need be done.
Verse 56 (skanda.6.36.56)
evaṁ tatra samāsādya siddhiṁ maṁtrasamudbhavām | tatra pīṭhe tataḥ kṛtyaṁ sādhayetsvecchayā naraḥ
Thus, having attained there the accomplishment born of the mantra, a man may then, at that shrine, accomplish whatever task he wishes.
Verse 57 (skanda.6.36.57)
śāpānugrahasāmarthyasaṁyutastejasā'nvitaḥ | ajeyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ sādhūnāṁ saṁmatastathā
He becomes endowed with the power to curse and to bless, filled with spiritual radiance, unconquerable by any being, and honored among the virtuous.
