The Glory of Yayatishvara

Verse 1 (skanda.6.39.1)

सूत उवाच । तस्यैवोत्तरदिग्भागे धुन्धुमारेश्वरस्य च । ययातिना नरेंद्रेण स्थापितं लिंगमुत्तमम्

sūta uvāca | tasyaivottaradigbhāge dhundhumāreśvarasya ca | yayātinā nareṁdreṇa sthāpitaṁ liṁgamuttamam

Suta said: To the north of that very Dhundhumareshvara stands another excellent linga, established by King Yayati.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.39.2)

देवयान्या तथान्यच्च तथा शर्मिष्ठया द्विजाः । भार्यया भूपतेस्तस्य सर्वकामफलप्रदम्

devayānyā tathānyacca tathā śarmiṣṭhayā dvijāḥ | bhāryayā bhūpatestasya sarvakāmaphalapradam

O brahmins, established too by that king's wives, Devayani and Sharmishtha, it grants the fruit of every desire.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.39.3)

स यदा सर्वभोगानां तृप्तिं प्राप्तो द्विजोत्तमाः । तदा पुत्रस्य राज्यं स्वं वपुश्चैव न्यवेदयत्

sa yadā sarvabhogānāṁ tṛptiṁ prāpto dvijottamāḥ | tadā putrasya rājyaṁ svaṁ vapuścaiva nyavedayat

O foremost of brahmins, when that king had become sated with every enjoyment, he then made over his kingdom -- and his own body's youth -- to his son.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.39.4)

जरामादाय तद्गात्राद्भार्याभ्यां सहितस्तदा । पप्रच्छ विनयोपेतो मार्कंडं मुनिसत्तमम्

jarāmādāya tadgātrādbhāryābhyāṁ sahitastadā | papraccha vinayopeto mārkaṁḍaṁ munisattamam

Then, taking upon his own body the old age given back by his son, he, together with his two wives, humbly questioned the foremost of sages, Markandeya --

Verse 5 (skanda.6.39.5)

भगवन्सर्वतीर्थानां क्षेत्राणां च वदस्व मे । यत्प्रधानं पवित्रं यत्तदस्माकं प्रकीर्तय

bhagavansarvatīrthānāṁ kṣetrāṇāṁ ca vadasva me | yatpradhānaṁ pavitraṁ yattadasmākaṁ prakīrtaya

"O lord, tell me, among all the sacred fords and fields, which is foremost and most pure -- declare that to us."

Verse 6 (skanda.6.39.6)

श्रीमार्कंडेय उवाच । क्षेत्राणामिह सर्वेषां तीर्थैः सर्वैरलंकृतम् । चमत्कारपुरं क्षेत्रं सांप्रतं प्रतिभाति नः

śrīmārkaṁḍeya uvāca | kṣetrāṇāmiha sarveṣāṁ tīrthaiḥ sarvairalaṁkṛtam | camatkārapuraṁ kṣetraṁ sāṁprataṁ pratibhāti naḥ

Markandeya said: Among all the sacred fields here, adorned by every sacred ford, the field of Chamatkarapura now appears to us to be the very best.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.39.7)

यत्र विष्णुपदी गंगा जंतूनां पापनाशिनी । स्वयं स्थिता नृपश्रेष्ठ तथा देवा हरादयः

yatra viṣṇupadī gaṁgā jaṁtūnāṁ pāpanāśinī | svayaṁ sthitā nṛpaśreṣṭha tathā devā harādayaḥ

O best of kings, there the Ganga, born of Vishnu's foot, destroyer of the sins of all beings, dwells of her own accord, and Shiva and the other gods are established there as well.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.39.8)

तथान्यानि च तीर्थानि यानि संति धरातले । तेषां यत्र च सांनिध्यं सर्वदा नृपसत्तम

tathānyāni ca tīrthāni yāni saṁti dharātale | teṣāṁ yatra ca sāṁnidhyaṁ sarvadā nṛpasattama

O best of kings, whatever other sacred fords exist upon the earth, the presence of all of them, too, forever abides there.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.39.9)

शिला यत्र द्विपञ्चाशद्धस्तानां परिसंख्यया । पितामहेन निर्मुक्ता प्रमोदाय द्विजन्मनाम्

śilā yatra dvipañcāśaddhastānāṁ parisaṁkhyayā | pitāmahena nirmuktā pramodāya dvijanmanām

Where the grandsire Brahma once released a great slab of stone, fifty-two cubits in measure, for the delight of the twice-born.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.39.10)

यदन्यत्र शुभं कर्म वर्षेणैकेन सिध्यति । तत्तत्र दिवसेनापि सिद्धिं याति क्षितीश्वर

yadanyatra śubhaṁ karma varṣeṇaikena sidhyati | tattatra divasenāpi siddhiṁ yāti kṣitīśvara

O lord of the earth, whatever auspicious rite achieves its result elsewhere in the course of one year attains that very result there in a single day.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.39.11)

तस्मात्तत्र द्रुतं गत्वा तपः कुरु महीपते । येन प्राप्स्यसि चित्तस्थाँल्लोकान्भार्यासमन्वितः

tasmāttatra drutaṁ gatvā tapaḥ kuru mahīpate | yena prāpsyasi cittasthā~llokānbhāryāsamanvitaḥ

Therefore, O king, go there quickly and perform austerity, so that you, together with your wives, may attain the worlds your heart desires.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.39.12)

सूत उवाच । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स राजा नहुषात्मजः । चमत्कारपुरे क्षेत्रे भार्याभ्यां सहितो ययौ

sūta uvāca | tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā sa rājā nahuṣātmajaḥ | camatkārapure kṣetre bhāryābhyāṁ sahito yayau

Suta said: Hearing these words, that king, the son of Nahusha, went to the field of Chamatkarapura together with his two wives.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.39.13)

ततः संस्थाप्य तल्लिंगं देवदेवस्य शूलिनः । सम्यगाराधयामास श्रद्धया परया युतः

tataḥ saṁsthāpya talliṁgaṁ devadevasya śūlinaḥ | samyagārādhayāmāsa śraddhayā parayā yutaḥ

There, having established that linga of the trident-bearing god of gods, he worshiped it properly, filled with the deepest devotion.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.39.14)

ततस्तस्य प्रभावेन भार्याभ्यां सहितो नृपः । विमानवरमारूढो जगाम त्रिदिवालयम्

tatastasya prabhāvena bhāryābhyāṁ sahito nṛpaḥ | vimānavaramārūḍho jagāma tridivālayam

Then, by the power of that worship, the king, together with his two wives, mounted upon an excellent celestial chariot, and went to the abode of the gods.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.39.15)

किन्नरैर्गीयमानश्च स्तूयमानश्च चारणैः । स्पर्द्धमानः समं देवैर्द्वादशार्कसमप्रभः

kinnarairgīyamānaśca stūyamānaśca cāraṇaiḥ | sparddhamānaḥ samaṁ devairdvādaśārkasamaprabhaḥ

Sung to by kinnaras, praised by charanas, blazing with the splendor of twelve suns, he went on, rivaling the very gods themselves.
