Chapter 40All chaptersChapter 42

Verse 1 (skanda.6.41.1)

sūta uvāca tasyaivottaradigbhāge devasya jalaśāyinaḥ sthānamasti suvikhyātaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam

Suta said: "In the northern part of that very place there is the most renowned abode of the god Jalashayin (Vishnu, who reclines upon the waters), which destroys all sins."

Verse 2 (skanda.6.41.2)

yastatpūjayate bhaktyā śayane bodhane hareḥ upavāsaparo bhūtvā sa gacchedvaiṣṇavaṁ padam

Whoever, observing a fast, worships that place with devotion at the time of Hari's reclining and awakening attains the supreme abode of Vishnu.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.41.3)

aśūnyaśayanānāma dvitīyā dayitā tithiḥ sadaiva devadevasya kṛṣṇā suptasya yā bhavet

The second lunar day dear to "Ashunyashayana" (the vow of the never-empty couch) is always that dark-fortnight second day on which the God of gods lies asleep.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.41.4)

tasyāṁ yaḥ pūjayettatra taṁ devaṁ jalaśāyinam śāstroktena vidhānena sa gacchati hareḥ padam

Whoever on that day worships that god Jalashayin according to the rite prescribed in the scriptures attains the abode of Hari.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.41.5)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ jalaśāyī kathaṁ tatra saṁprāptaḥ sūtanandana pūjyate vidhinā kena tatsarvaṁ vistarādvada

The sages said: "O son of Suta, how did Jalashayin come to be established there, and by what rite is he worshipped? Tell us all this in detail."

Verse 6 (skanda.6.41.6)

sūta uvāca purāsīdbāṣkalirnāma dānavendro mahābalaḥ ajeyaḥ sarvadevānāṁ gandharvoragarakṣasām

Suta said: "Long ago there was a mighty lord of the danavas named Bashkali, invincible to gods, gandharvas, serpents, and rakshasas alike."

Verse 7 (skanda.6.41.7)

athāsau bhūtalaṁ sarvaṁ vaśīkṛtvā mahābalaḥ tato daityagaṇaiḥ sārddhaṁ jagāma tridaśālayam

That mighty one, having subdued the whole earth, then marched with his hosts of daityas upon the abode of the gods.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.41.8)

tatrābhavanmahāyuddhaṁ devāsuravināśakam devānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca kruddhānāmitaretaram

There a great war broke out between the gods and demons, each enraged at the other, a war that brought ruin to both.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.41.9)

varṣāṇāmayutaṁ tāvadahanyahani dāruṇam tatrāsṛkkardamo jātaḥ parvataścāsthi saṁbhavaḥ

That terrible battle raged day after day for ten thousand years, until the flowing blood formed mud and the piled bones rose into a mountain.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.41.10)

tato varṣasahasrāṁte daśame samupasthite jitastena sahasrākṣaḥ sasainyaḥ saparigrahaḥ

Then, when the tenth thousand of years had come to its end, he defeated Sahasraksha (Indra) together with his army and retinue.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.41.11)

tataḥ svargaṁ parityajya sarvadevagaṇaiḥ saha jagāma śaraṇaṁ viṣṇoḥ śvetadvīpaṁ pratiśrayam

Then, abandoning heaven, he went with all the hosts of the gods for refuge to Vishnu, to Shvetadvipa, his dwelling place.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.41.12)

yatrāste bhagavānviṣṇuryoganidrāvaśaṁgataḥ śayānaḥ śeṣaparyaṁke lakṣmyā saṁvāhitāṁghriyuk

There dwells Lord Vishnu, absorbed in yogic slumber, reclining on the couch of Shesha, his feet gently pressed by Lakshmi.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.41.13)

tato vedodbhavaiḥ sūktaiḥ stutiṁ cakruḥ samaṁtataḥ tasya devasya sadbhaktāḥ sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ

Then all the gods, together with Vasava (Indra), true devotees of that god, praised him on every side with hymns drawn from the Vedas.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.41.14)

athotthāya jagannāthaḥ provāca balasūdanam kaccitkṣemaṁ sahasrākṣa sāṁprataṁ bhuvanatraye yattvaṁ devagaṇaiḥ sārddhaṁ svayameva ihāgataḥ

Then Jagannatha rose and said to Indra, the slayer of Bala: "O Sahasraksha, is all well now in the three worlds, since you yourself have come here with the hosts of gods?"

Verse 15 (skanda.6.41.15)

śakra uvāca bāṣkalirnāma detyendro haralabdhavaro balī ajeyaḥ saṁgare devaistenāhaṁ vijito raṇe

Shakra said: "A lord of the daityas named Bashkali, mighty and granted a boon by Hara, invincible to the gods in battle, has defeated me in war."

Verse 16 (skanda.6.41.16)

saṁsthitiśca kṛtā svarge sāṁprataṁ madhu sūdana tenaiṣa śaraṇaṁ prāpto devaiḥ sārddhaṁ surottama

"O Madhusudana, he has now established his dominion in heaven; therefore, O best of gods, I have come with the gods for refuge to you."

Verse 17 (skanda.6.41.17)

hiraṇyākṣabhayāddevā hiraṇyakaśipoḥ purā tvayā trātā vayaṁ sarve tathānyeṣāṁ durātmanām

"Long ago, from the terror of Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, and of other wicked ones as well, you protected all of us gods."

Verse 18 (skanda.6.41.18)

tasmādasmādapi trāhi dānavādbalavattarāt bāṣkalernāsti deveśa tvāṁ muktvānyā parā gatiḥ

"Therefore protect us from this danava too, who is stronger still. O Lord of gods, apart from you there is no other refuge from Bashkali."

Verse 19 (skanda.6.41.19)

śrībhagavānuvāca ahaṁ taṁ nigrahīṣyāmi saṁprāpte samaye svayam tasmāttvaṁ samayaṁyāvatkuru śakra tapo mahat

The Blessed Lord said: "When the proper time comes, I myself shall subdue him. Until then, O Shakra, perform great austerities."

Verse 20 (skanda.6.41.20)

yena te jāyate śaktistapovīryeṇa vāsava vadhāya tasya daityasya balayuktasya bāṣkaleḥ

"By the power of that austerity, O Vasava, you will gain the strength needed to slay that mighty daitya Bashkali."

Verse 21 (skanda.6.41.21)

śakra uvāca kasminkṣetre jagannātha karomi sumahattapaḥ tasya daityasya nāśārthaṁ tada smākaṁ prakīrtaya

Shakra said: "O Jagannatha, in which sacred place should I perform this great austerity for the destruction of that daitya? Please tell us."

Verse 22 (skanda.6.41.22)

sūta uvāca tacchrutvā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ provācātha puraṁdaram ciraṁ manasi niścitya kṣetrāṇyāyatanāni ca

Suta said: "Hearing this, Lord Vishnu, after long deliberation in his mind over the various sacred fields and shrines, spoke to Purandara (Indra)."

Verse 23 (skanda.6.41.23)

camatkārapuraṁ kṣetraṁ śakra siddhipradāyakam tasmāttatra drutaṁ gatvā tadvadhārthaṁ tapaḥ kuru

"O Shakra, the sacred field called Chamatkarapura bestows spiritual accomplishment. Go there quickly, then, and perform austerities for his destruction."

Verse 24 (skanda.6.41.24)

śakra uvāca na vayaṁ bhavatā hīnā yāsyāmo'nyatra keśava bāṣkalerdānavendrasya bhayādbhītāḥ kathaṁcana

Shakra said: "O Keshava, we, being in some measure afraid of the danava-lord Bashkali, will not go elsewhere without you."

Verse 25 (skanda.6.41.25)

tasmādāgaccha tatra tvaṁ svayameva sureśvara tvayā saṁrakṣito yena karomi sumahattapaḥ

"Therefore, O Lord of the gods, come yourself with us there, so that under your protection I may perform this great austerity."

Verse 26 (skanda.6.41.26)

sūta uvāca tataḥ sa bhagavānviṣṇustathetyuktvā suraiḥ saha camatkārapuraṁ kṣetramājagāma saha śriyā

Suta said: "Then Lord Vishnu, saying 'so be it,' came together with the gods and with Shri (Lakshmi) to the sacred field of Chamatkarapura."

Verse 27 (skanda.6.41.27)

atha devagaṇāḥ sarve tatra gatvā tadā''śramān cakruḥ pṛthakpṛthagghṛṣṭāstapo'rthaṁ kṛtaniścayāḥ

Then, arriving there, all the gods, rejoicing, resolved firmly upon austerity and built their hermitages, each apart from the other.

Verse 28 (skanda.6.41.28)

vāsudevo'pi saṁsmṛtya kṣīrodaṁ tatra sāgaram ānināyāśu vistīrṇaṁ hrade tasminpurātane

Vasudeva too, calling to mind the Ocean of Milk, swiftly brought its vast waters into that ancient lake.

Verse 29 (skanda.6.41.29)

cakāra śayanaṁ tatra śvetadvīpe yathā purā stūyamānaḥ suraiḥ sarvaiḥ samaṁtādvinayānvitaiḥ

There he lay down to rest, just as before in Shvetadvipa, while all the gods, filled with humility, praised him on every side.

Verse 30 (skanda.6.41.30)

athāṣāḍhasya saṁprāpte dvitīyādivase śubhe kṛṣṇapakṣe sahasrākṣaṁ svayameva bṛhaspatiḥ provāca vacanaṁ ślakṣṇaṁ bāṣpavyākula locanam

Then, when the auspicious second day of the dark fortnight of Ashadha arrived, Brihaspati himself spoke gentle words to Sahasraksha, whose eyes were troubled with tears.

Verse 31 (skanda.6.41.31)

bṛhaspatiruvāca aśūnyaśayanānāma dvitīyādya puraṁdara atīva dayitā viṣṇoḥ prasuptasya jalāśaye

Brihaspati said: "O Purandara, today is the second day of Ashunyashayana, exceedingly dear to Vishnu as he sleeps in his watery abode."

Verse 32 (skanda.6.41.32)

asyāṁ saṁpūjito viṣṇuryāvanmāsacatuṣṭayam dadāti sakalānkāmāndhyātaścetasi sarvadā śāstroktavidhinā samyagvratastho jalaśāyinam

"If, following the rite prescribed in the scriptures, one observes the vow properly for four months, worshipping the reclining-in-water Vishnu on this day and holding him always in the mind, he grants all one's desires."

Verse 33 (skanda.6.41.33)

evaṁ sa caturo māsāndvitīyādivase harim pūjayitvā sahasrākṣastejasā sahito'bhavat

Thus Sahasraksha, having worshipped Hari on the second day for four months, became endowed with radiant power.

Verse 34 (skanda.6.41.34)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā tejasā yuktaṁ parituṣṭo janārdanaḥ provāca śakra gacchādya vadhārthaṁ tasya bāṣkaleḥ sarvairdevagaṇaiḥ sārdhaṁ vijayaste bhaviṣyati

Seeing him now radiant, Janardana, pleased, said: "O Shakra, go now with all the hosts of gods to slay Bashkali; victory will be yours."

Verse 35 (skanda.6.41.35)

śakra uvāca bibhemi tasya devāhaṁ dānavendrasya durmateḥ tvayā vinā na gacchāmi sārdhaṁ sarvaiḥ surairapi

Shakra said: "O God, I fear that evil-minded lord of the danavas. Even with all the gods beside me, I will not go without you."

Verse 36 (skanda.6.41.36)

śrībhagavānuvāca tvayā saha sahasrākṣa cakrametatsudarśanam gamiṣyati vadhārthāya madīyaṁ suravidviṣām

The Blessed Lord said: "O Sahasraksha, this Sudarshana discus of mine will go with you, to destroy the enemies of the gods."

Verse 37 (skanda.6.41.37)

evamuktvā hariścakraṁ pramumoca sudarśanam vadhārthaṁ dānavendrāṇāṁ śakreṇa sahitaṁ tadā

Having said this, Hari released his Sudarshana discus, together with Shakra, for the destruction of the lords of the danavas.

Verse 38 (skanda.6.41.38)

śakro'pi sahitastena gatvā cakreṇa kṛtsnaśaḥ sarvānutsādayāmāsa dānavānraṇamūrdhani

Shakra too, going with that discus into the front of the battle, utterly destroyed all the danavas with it.

Verse 39 (skanda.6.41.39)

sa cāpi bāṣkalistena cchinnaścakreṇa kṛtsnaśaḥ papāta dharaṇīpṛṣṭhe vajrāhata ivācalaḥ

And that Bashkali too, completely cut down by that discus, fell to the surface of the earth like a mountain struck by the thunderbolt.

Verse 40 (skanda.6.41.40)

tathānye bahavaḥ śūrā dānavā baladarpitāḥ hatvā sudarśanaṁ cakraṁ bhūyaḥ prāptaṁ hareḥ karam

In the same way, having slain many other heroic danavas swollen with the pride of strength, the Sudarshana discus returned once more to Hari's hand.

Verse 41 (skanda.6.41.41)

te'pi śakrādayo devāḥ prahṛṣṭā gatasaṁśayāḥ bhūyo viṣṇuṁ sametyātha procurnatvā tataḥ param

Then Indra and the other gods, joyful and now free of all doubt, came once more before Vishnu, and bowing to him, spoke these words.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.41.42)

prabhāvāttava deveśa hatāḥ sarve'marārayaḥ prāptaṁ trailokyarājyaṁ ca bhūyo nihatakaṁṭakam

"O Lord of gods, by your power all the enemies of the immortals have been slain, and once again the sovereignty of the three worlds, now free of thorns, has come to us."

Verse 43 (skanda.6.41.43)

tasmātkīrtaya yatkṛtyaṁ tacca śreyaskaraṁ mama sadā syātpuṁḍarīkākṣa tathā śatrubhayāvaham

"Therefore, O Lotus-eyed one, tell us what deed we should do, so that this good fortune of ours may endure forever, and remain ever a terror to our enemies."

Verse 44 (skanda.6.41.44)

śrībhagavānuvāca mayātraiva sadā stheyaṁ rūpeṇānena vāsava sarvalokahitārthāya hrade puṇya jalāśraye

The Blessed Lord said: "O Vasava, for the welfare of all the worlds I shall dwell here always, in this very form, in this sacred lake that is a refuge of waters."

Verse 45 (skanda.6.41.45)

tvayā tasmātsamāgamya cāturmāsyaṁ śacīpate prayatnena prakartavyamaśūnyaśayanaṁ vratam

"Therefore, O husband of Shachi, you should come here and diligently observe the vow of Ashunyashayana during the four holy months."

Verse 46 (skanda.6.41.46)

"O Sahasraksha, by this you will have no adversaries left, and without doubt, by my grace, you will attain the fruit you desire."

Verse 47 (skanda.6.41.47)

anyo'pi yo naro bhaktyā pūjayiṣyati māmiha saṁprāpsyati sa tā~llokāndurlabhāṁstri daśairapi

"Whatever other person worships me here with devotion will also attain those worlds that are hard to reach even for the gods."

Verse 48 (skanda.6.41.48)

tasmādgaccha sahasrākṣa kuru rājyaṁ triviṣṭape bhūyo'pyatraiva deveśa draṣṭavyo'smi na saṁśayaḥ kāryakāle samāyāte śvetadvīpe yathā tathā

"Therefore go, O Sahasraksha, and rule over heaven; O lord of gods, whenever a time of need arises, you will without doubt see me again right here, just as you would in Shvetadvipa."

Verse 49 (skanda.6.41.49)

sūta uvāca tataḥ praṇamya taṁ dṛṣṭvā prajagāma śatakratuḥ vāsudevo'pi tatraiva sthito lokahitāya ca

Suta said: "Then, having beheld him and bowed, Shatakratu (Indra) departed, while Vasudeva remained there for the welfare of the world."

Verse 50 (skanda.6.41.50)

evaṁ tatra dvijaśreṣṭhā jalaśāyī janārdanaḥ sarvalokahitārthāya saṁsthitaḥ parameśvaraḥ

"Thus, O best of brahmins, Janardana Jalashayin, the Supreme Lord, became established there for the welfare of all the worlds."

Verse 51 (skanda.6.41.51)

yastaṁ pūjayate bhaktyā śraddhayā parayā yutaḥ cāturmāsye viśeṣeṇa sa yāti paramāṁ gatim

Whoever worships him with devotion and supreme faith, especially during the four holy months, attains the highest state.

Verse 52 (skanda.6.41.52)

tathā devagaṇaiḥ sarvairdvārakā tatra sā kṛtā saṁpūjya tu narā yāṁti cāturmāsye triviṣṭapam

There, too, all the gods established a Dvaraka; worshipping it, men attain heaven during the four holy months.

Verse 53 (skanda.6.41.53)

śeṣakāle'pi cittasthānkāmānmartyaḥ samāpnuyāt tasmātsarvaprayatnena pūjyā sā dvārakā naraiḥ sarveṣvapi hi kāleṣu cātumāsye viśeṣataḥ

Even at other times a mortal may obtain the desires held in his mind; therefore men should worship that Dvaraka with every effort, at all times, but especially during the four holy months.

Verse 54 (skanda.6.41.54)

etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam ākhyānaṁ devadevasya supuṇyaṁ jalaśāyinaḥ

Thus I have related to you all this most sacred account of Jalashayin, the God of gods, the destroyer of every sin.
