Trishanku Attains Heaven

Verse 1 (skanda.6.7.1)

सूत उवाच। एवं ध्यायमानेन जलमाविश्य काम्यया। सृष्टं संध्याद्वयं तच्च दृश्यतेऽद्यापि वै द्विजाः

sūta uvāca| evaṁ dhyāyamānena jalamāviśya kāmyayā| sṛṣṭaṁ saṁdhyādvayaṁ tacca dṛśyate'dyāpi vai dvijāḥ

Suta said: Thus meditating, and entering the water at will, he created the twin twilights, and that creation, O brahmins, is seen even to this day.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.7.2)

ततो देवगणाः सर्वे सृष्टास्तेन महात्मना। वैमानिकाश्च ये केचिन्नक्षत्राणि ग्रहास्तथा

tato devagaṇāḥ sarve sṛṣṭāstena mahātmanā| vaimānikāśca ye kecinnakṣatrāṇi grahāstathā

Then all the hosts of gods were created by that great soul, and also certain celestial beings who move in vimanas, and the constellations and planets.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.7.3)

मनुष्योरगरक्षांसि वीरुधो वृक्षसंयुताः। सप्तर्षयो ध्रुवाद्याश्च ये चान्ये गगनेचराः

manuṣyoragarakṣāṁsi vīrudho vṛkṣasaṁyutāḥ| saptarṣayo dhruvādyāśca ye cānye gaganecarāḥ

— men, serpents, demons, creepers together with trees, the Seven Sages, Dhruva and the like, and whatever other beings move through the sky.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.7.4)

एवं हि भगवान्सृष्ट्वा विश्वामित्रः स मन्युमान्। स्वकीयेष्वथ कृत्येषु योजयामास तांस्ततः

evaṁ hi bhagavānsṛṣṭvā viśvāmitraḥ sa manyumān| svakīyeṣvatha kṛtyeṣu yojayāmāsa tāṁstataḥ

Thus the wrathful lord Vishvamitra, having created them, then assigned each of them to their own respective functions.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.7.5)

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु द्वौ सूर्यो युगपद्दिवि। उदितौ रात्रिनाथौ च जाताश्च द्विगुणा ग्रहाः। द्विगुणानि च भान्येव सह सप्तर्षिभिर्द्विजाः

etasminneva kāle tu dvau sūryo yugapaddivi| uditau rātrināthau ca jātāśca dviguṇā grahāḥ| dviguṇāni ca bhānyeva saha saptarṣibhirdvijāḥ

At that very time, two suns rose together in the sky, and two moons as well; the planets became doubled, and, O brahmins, the stars too became doubled, along with the Seven Sages.

Verse 6 (skanda.6.7.6)

एवं वियति ते सर्वे स्पर्द्धमानाः परस्परम्। दृश्यंते द्विगुणीभूता जनविभ्रमकारकाः

evaṁ viyati te sarve sparddhamānāḥ parasparam| dṛśyaṁte dviguṇībhūtā janavibhramakārakāḥ

Thus all of them, rivaling one another in the sky, appeared doubled, causing great confusion among the people.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.7.7)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शक्रः सह सर्वेर्दिवालयैः। जगाम तत्र यत्रास्ते भगवान्कमलासनः

etasminnantare śakraḥ saha sarverdivālayaiḥ| jagāma tatra yatrāste bhagavānkamalāsanaḥ

Meanwhile Indra, together with all the dwellers of heaven, went to where the lord seated on the lotus was.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.7.8)

प्रोवाचाथ प्रणम्योच्चैः कृतांजलिपुटः स्थितः। स्तुतिं कृत्वा सुरैः सार्धं वेदोक्तैः स्तवनैर्द्विजाः

provācātha praṇamyoccaiḥ kṛtāṁjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ| stutiṁ kṛtvā suraiḥ sārdhaṁ vedoktaiḥ stavanairdvijāḥ

Then, bowing deeply and standing with joined palms, having offered praise together with the gods through hymns declared in the Veda, he spoke, O brahmins.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.7.9)

सृष्टिः कृता सुरश्रेष्ठ विश्वामित्रेण सांप्रतम्। मनुष्ययक्षसर्पाणां देवगंधर्वरक्षसाम्

sṛṣṭiḥ kṛtā suraśreṣṭha viśvāmitreṇa sāṁpratam| manuṣyayakṣasarpāṇāṁ devagaṁdharvarakṣasām

'O best of gods, a creation of men, yakshas, serpents, gods, gandharvas, and rakshasas has now been made by Vishvamitra.'

Verse 10 (skanda.6.7.10)

तस्माद्वारय तं गत्वा स्वयमेव पितामह। यावन्न व्याप्यते सर्वं तत्सष्ट्येदं चराचरम्

tasmādvāraya taṁ gatvā svayameva pitāmaha| yāvanna vyāpyate sarvaṁ tatsaṣṭyedaṁ carācaram

'Therefore, O Grandsire, go yourself and restrain him, before this entire moving and unmoving universe becomes overrun by that creation of his.'

Verse 11 (skanda.6.7.11)

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा तेनैव सहितो विधिः। गत्वोवाच जगन्मित्रं विश्वामित्रं मुनीश्वरम्

tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā tenaiva sahito vidhiḥ| gatvovāca jaganmitraṁ viśvāmitraṁ munīśvaram

Having heard those words of his, Brahma, together with him, went and addressed Vishvamitra, friend of the world, lord of sages.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.7.12)

निवृत्तिं कुरु विप्रर्षे सांप्रतं वचनान्मम। सृष्टैर्यावन्न नश्यंति सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः

nivṛttiṁ kuru viprarṣe sāṁprataṁ vacanānmama| sṛṣṭairyāvanna naśyaṁti sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ

'Cease now, O sage among brahmins, at my word, before all the gods, together with Indra, are destroyed by your creation.'

Verse 13 (skanda.6.7.13)

विश्वामित्र उवाच। अनेनैव शरीरेण त्रिशंकुर्नृपसत्तमः। यदि गच्छति ते लोके तत्सृष्टिं न करोम्यहम्

viśvāmitra uvāca| anenaiva śarīreṇa triśaṁkurnṛpasattamaḥ| yadi gacchati te loke tatsṛṣṭiṁ na karomyaham

Vishvamitra said: If that best of kings, Trishanku, goes to your heaven in this very body, then I shall not carry out that creation any further.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.7.14)

ब्रह्मोवाच। एष गच्छतु भूपालो मया सह त्रिविष्टपम्। अनेनैव शरीरेण त्वत्प्रसादान्मुनीश्वर

brahmovāca| eṣa gacchatu bhūpālo mayā saha triviṣṭapam| anenaiva śarīreṇa tvatprasādānmunīśvara

Brahma said: Let this king go to heaven together with me, in this very body, O lord of sages, by your grace.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.7.15)

विरामं कुरु सृष्टेस्त्वं नैतदन्यः करिष्यति। न कृतं केनचिल्लोके तत्कर्म भवता कृतम्

virāmaṁ kuru sṛṣṭestvaṁ naitadanyaḥ kariṣyati| na kṛtaṁ kenacilloke tatkarma bhavatā kṛtam

'Cease now from your creation; no one else could have accomplished this. What you have done has never been done by anyone else in the world.'

Verse 16 (skanda.6.7.16)

विश्वामित्र उवाच। यन्मया कोपयुक्तेन कृतेयं सृष्टिरब्जज। तत्क्षतव्यं त्वया देव सर्वलोकपितामह

viśvāmitra uvāca| yanmayā kopayuktena kṛteyaṁ sṛṣṭirabjaja| tatkṣatavyaṁ tvayā deva sarvalokapitāmaha

Vishvamitra said: O Lotus-born one, whatever creation I have made out of anger, let it be forgiven by you, O god, Grandsire of all worlds.

Verse 17 (skanda.6.7.17)

तथाऽक्षयास्तु मे देव सृष्टिस्तव प्रसादतः। या कृता न करिष्यामि भूयो ऽन्यां पद्मसंभव

tathā'kṣayāstu me deva sṛṣṭistava prasādataḥ| yā kṛtā na kariṣyāmi bhūyo 'nyāṁ padmasaṁbhava

'And, O god, let that creation which I have already made remain imperishable, by your grace; I shall not create another one again, O Lotus-born one.'

Verse 18 (skanda.6.7.18)

ब्रह्मोवाच। भविष्यति ध्रुवा विप्र सृष्टिर्या भवता कृता। परं सर्वेषु कृत्येषु यज्ञार्हा न भविष्यति

brahmovāca| bhaviṣyati dhruvā vipra sṛṣṭiryā bhavatā kṛtā| paraṁ sarveṣu kṛtyeṣu yajñārhā na bhaviṣyati

Brahma said: The creation you have made, O brahmin, shall indeed remain permanent; but in every rite it shall not be fit to receive a share of the sacrifice.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.7.19)

एवमुक्त्वा समादाय त्रिशंकुं प्रपितामहः। ब्रह्मलोकं गतो हृष्टो मुनिस्तत्रैव संस्थितः

evamuktvā samādāya triśaṁkuṁ prapitāmahaḥ| brahmalokaṁ gato hṛṣṭo munistatraiva saṁsthitaḥ

Having said this, the great-grandsire, taking Trishanku with him, went joyfully to the world of Brahma, and the sage remained there itself.
