Chapter 92All chaptersChapter 94

Verse 1 (skanda.6.93.1)

sūta uvāca athānyadapi tatrāsti gomukhākhyaṁ suśobhanam yadgovaktrātpurā labdhaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam

Suta said: There is also, in that place, another most beautiful tirtha called Gomukha, which in ancient times issued from a cow's mouth and destroys every sin.

Verse 2 (skanda.6.93.2)

purāsīdatra gopālaḥ kaścitkuṣṭhasamāvṛtaḥ camatkārapuraṁ vipra atīva kṣāmatāṁ gataḥ

Formerly there lived here a certain cowherd afflicted with leprosy, O brahmin, who in the city of Chamatkarapura had grown extremely emaciated.

Verse 3 (skanda.6.93.3)

kasyacittvatha kālasya tena mārgeṇa gokulam madhyāhnasamaye prāptaṁ caṁdre citrāsamanvitaḥ

At one time, when the moon stood in the Chitra constellation, at midday, his herd of cows came along that path.

Verse 4 (skanda.6.93.4)

ekādaśyāṁ tṛṣārttaṁ ca bhāskare vṛṣasaṁsthite ekayāpi tato dhenvā tṛṇastambamatīva hi nīlamālokitaṁ tatra dūrādetya praharṣitā

On the eleventh lunar day, while the sun stood in Taurus, one of the cows, tormented by thirst, spied from afar a most verdant tuft of grass, and, greatly delighted, came up to it.

Verse 5 (skanda.6.93.5)

dantairdrutaṁ samutpāṭya yāvadākarṣati dvijāḥ tāvattajjaḍamārgeṇa toyadhārā vinirgatā

O brahmins, the very moment she quickly pulled it up with her teeth and tugged at it, a stream of water burst forth through that root's passage.

Verse 6 (skanda.6.93.6)

athāsvādya tṛṇaṁ tasmāttṛṣārtā ca śanaiḥśanaiḥ papau toyaṁ suviśrabdhā susvādu kṣīrasaṁnibham

Then, having tasted the grass, that thirsty cow, quite at ease, slowly drank of the water, which was as sweet as milk.

Verse 7 (skanda.6.93.7)

tasyā vegena tattoyaṁ pibantyāstatrabhūtale gartā jātā suvistīrṇā salilena samāvṛtā

As she drank that water eagerly, a wide pit formed there on the ground and filled with the water.

Verse 8 (skanda.6.93.8)

tato'nyāḥ śataśo gāvaḥ papustoyaṁ munirmalam tṛṣārttāstaddvijaśreṣṭhāḥ pīyūṣarasasaṁnibham

O best of brahmins, then hundreds of other cows too, tormented by thirst, drank of that pure water, which tasted like nectar.

Verse 9 (skanda.6.93.9)

yathāyathā gatā gāvastatra toyaṁ pibaṁti tāḥ sā gartā vaktrasaṁsparśādvṛddhiṁ yāti tathā tathā

As more and more cows went there and drank of that water, so too, from the touch of their mouths, that pit kept growing larger.

Verse 10 (skanda.6.93.10)

tataśca gokule kṛtsne jāte tṛṣṇāvivarjite gopālo'pi tṛṣārtastu tasmiṁstoye viveśa ca

And when the thirst of the whole herd had been fully quenched, the cowherd too, himself parched with thirst, entered that water.

Verse 11 (skanda.6.93.11)

aṁgaṁ prakṣālya pītvāpo yāvanniṣkrāmati drutam tāvatpaśyati gātraṁ svaṁ dvādaśārkasamaprabham

As soon as he had washed his limbs, drunk of the water, and quickly stepped out, he beheld his own body shining as bright as twelve suns.

Verse 12 (skanda.6.93.12)

tato vismayamāpanno gatvā svīyaṁ niketanam vṛtāṁtaṁ kathayāmāsa lokānāṁ purato'khilam

Then, astonished, he went to his own dwelling and related the entire happening before the people there.

Verse 13 (skanda.6.93.13)

tṛṇastambaṁ yathā dhenvā tatrotpāṭya praśaktitaḥ yathā vinirgataṁ toyaṁ yathā tenāvagāhitam

— how the cow had, with all her strength, torn up that tuft of grass, how the water had gushed forth, and how he himself had bathed in it.

Verse 14 (skanda.6.93.14)

taddṛṣṭvā mānavāḥ sarve gatvā divyaṁ jalaṁ ca tat vyādhigrastā viśeṣeṇa snānaṁ cakruḥ samāhitāḥ

Hearing this, all the people, especially those afflicted with disease, went to that divine water and, with focused mind, bathed in it.

Verse 15 (skanda.6.93.15)

bhavaṁti ca vinirmuktā rogaiḥ pāpaiśca tatkṣaṇāt apāpāśca punaryāṁti tatkṣaṇāttridivālayam

They are instantly freed from diseases and sins, and, cleansed of sin, at once attain the abode of the gods.

Verse 16 (skanda.6.93.16)

tataḥprabhṛti tatkhyātaṁ tīrthaṁ gomukhasaṁjñitam gomukhādbhūtale jātaṁ yataścaivaṁ dvijottamāḥ

O best of brahmins, from that time onward that tirtha became famed by the name Gomukha, since it had thus arisen on earth from a cow's mouth.

Verse 17 (skanda.6.93.17)

atha bhītaḥ sahasrākṣastaddṛṣṭvā svargadāyakam akleśena manuṣyāṇāṁ pūrayāmāsa pāṁsubhiḥ

Then Indra of the thousand eyes, seeing that it granted heaven to people without any hardship, grew fearful and filled it up with dust.

Verse 18 (skanda.6.93.18)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ kiṁ tatkāraṇamādiṣṭaṁ yena tattādṛśaṁ jalam tasmātsthānādviniṣkrāṁtaṁ sūtaputra vadasva naḥ

The sages said: O son of Suta, what was that cause on account of which such water issued forth from that place? Tell us.

Verse 19 (skanda.6.93.19)

sūta uvāca atra pūrvaṁ tapastaptamambarīṣeṇa bhūbhujā putra śokābhibhūtena toṣito garuḍadhvajaḥ

Suta said: Formerly, here, King Ambarisha, overwhelmed with grief for his son, performed austerities, by which he pleased Vishnu, whose banner bears Garuda.

Verse 20 (skanda.6.93.20)

tasya putraḥ suvikhyātaḥ suvarcā iti viśrutaḥ eko babhūva vṛddhatve kathaṁciddvijasattamāḥ

O best of brahmins, he had one very famous son, renowned by the name Suvarcha, who had somehow been born to him in his old age.

Verse 21 (skanda.6.93.21)

pūrvakarmavipākena sa bālo'pi ca tatsutaḥ kuṣṭhavyādhisamākrāṁtaḥ pitṛmātṛsuduḥkhadaḥ

Through the ripening of deeds from a former life, that child, though still young, was afflicted with leprosy, which caused his parents deep sorrow.

Verse 22 (skanda.6.93.22)

atha tatkāmikaṁ kṣetraṁ sa gatvā pṛthivīpatiḥ cakāra roganāśāya svaputrārthaṁ mahattapaḥ

Then that king went to that wish-fulfilling tirtha and performed great austerities for the sake of curing his son's disease.

Verse 23 (skanda.6.93.23)

tatastuṣṭiṁ gatastasya svayameva janārdanaḥ pradāya darśanaṁ vākyaṁ tataḥ provāca sādaram

Then, pleased with him, Janardana himself granted him his vision and spoke these words to him with regard.

Verse 24 (skanda.6.93.24)

"My child, I am well pleased with you; therefore, my son, ask for whatever boon your heart desires, and I shall grant it to you without doubt."

Verse 25 (skanda.6.93.25)

rājovāca mamāyaṁ saṁmataḥ putro grastaḥ kuṣṭhena keśava bālo'pi tatkuruṣvāsya kuṣṭhavyādhiparikṣayam

The king said: "O Keshava, this beloved son of mine, though still a child, is afflicted with leprosy; therefore, please bring about the destruction of his leprous disease."

Verse 26 (skanda.6.93.26)

śrībhagavānuvāca eṣa āsītpurā rājā meghavāhanasaṁjñitaḥ brahmaṇyaśca kṛtajñaśca sarvaśāstrārthapāragaḥ

The Blessed Lord said: "This boy was formerly a king named Meghavahana, devoted to brahmins, grateful, and versed in the meaning of every scripture."

Verse 27 (skanda.6.93.27)

kasyacittvatha kālasya brāhmaṇo'nena ghātitaḥ aṁtaḥpure niśākāle praviṣṭo jārakarmakṛta

"At one time, he killed a brahmin who had entered his inner apartments by night to commit adultery."

Verse 28 (skanda.6.93.28)

atha paśyati yāvatsa prabhāte'bhyudite ravau yajñopavītasaṁyuktastāvatsa dvijarūpadhṛk

"Then, when he looked at him the next morning as the sun rose, he saw that the man had indeed worn the sacred thread and had the form of a brahmin."

Verse 29 (skanda.6.93.29)

atha taṁ brāhmaṇaṁ matvā ghṛṇāviṣṭaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ gatvā kāśīpurīṁ paścāttapaścakre samāhitaḥ

"Then, realizing he had killed a brahmin, filled with revulsion and deep sorrow, he went to the city of Kashi and, with focused mind, performed austerities."

Verse 30 (skanda.6.93.30)

rājye putraṁ samādhāya vairāgyaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ niyato niyatāhāro bhikṣānnakṛtabhojanaḥ

"Having installed his son upon the throne, he attained supreme detachment, living under strict discipline, eating only sparingly, and taking his meals from alms alone."

Verse 31 (skanda.6.93.31)

tataḥ kālena saṁprāpto yamasya sadanaṁ prati vipāpmāpi ca cihnena yukto'yaṁ pṛthivīpatiḥ

"Then, in time, this king reached the abode of Yama; and even though free of sin, he still bore the mark of that killing."

Verse 32 (skanda.6.93.32)

brahmaghātodbhavenaiva bālabhāve'pi saṁsthite ye'tra kuṣṭhasamāyuktā dṛśyaṁte mānavā bhuvi tairnūnaṁ brāhmaṇāghāto vihitaścānyajanmani

"It is solely from the mark born of that brahmin-killing that this affliction now remains, even in his childhood. And whatever people are seen on this earth afflicted with leprosy, they have surely committed the killing of a brahmin in some other birth."

Verse 33 (skanda.6.93.33)

hāṭakeśvaraje kṣetre yo gatvā śrāddhamācaret pitṝṇāṁ caiva sarveṣāmanṛṇaḥ sa prajāyate

"Whoever goes to the field of Hatakeshvara and performs the shraddha rite there becomes freed from all debt to his ancestors."

Verse 34 (skanda.6.93.34)

na brāhmaṇavadhādbāhyaṁ kuṣṭhavyādhiḥ prajāyate etatsatyaṁ vijānīhi vadato mama bhūpate

"O king, apart from the killing of a brahmin, leprosy arises from no other cause; know what I tell you to be true."

Verse 35 (skanda.6.93.35)

aṁbarīṣa uvāca etadarthaṁ surādhīśa mayā tvaṁ pūjitaḥ prabho prasanne tvayi deveśa nāsādhyaṁ vidyate bhuvi

Ambarisha said: "O lord of the gods, it was for this very purpose that I worshipped you. O god of gods, when you are pleased, nothing on this earth remains unattainable."

Verse 36 (skanda.6.93.36)

evamuktastatastena bhagavānmadhusūdanaḥ pātālajāhnavītoyaṁ sa sasmāra samādhinā

Being thus addressed, the Blessed Lord Madhusudana, through meditation, called to mind the waters of the Ganga residing in the netherworld.

Verse 37 (skanda.6.93.37)

sā dhyātā sahasā tena viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā kṛtvā tu vivaraṁ sūkṣmaṁ viniṣkrāṁtā'tha tatkṣaṇāt

The moment she was thus meditated upon by the mighty Vishnu, she instantly made a subtle opening and emerged from it.

Verse 38 (skanda.6.93.38)

tataḥ provāca vacanamaṁbarīṣaṁ caturbhujaḥ nimajjatu sutaste'tra supuṇye jāhnavījale

Then the four-armed Vishnu spoke these words to Ambarisha: "Let your son immerse himself here in this most sacred water of the Ganga."

Verse 39 (skanda.6.93.39)

yena kuṣṭhavinirmuktastatkṣaṇādeva jāyate tathā brahmavadhodbhūtaiḥ pātakairupapātakaiḥ

"By this he shall be instantly freed from leprosy, as well as from the great sins and lesser sins born of the killing of a brahmin."

Verse 40 (skanda.6.93.40)

etasminneva kāle tu samānīya sutaṁ nṛpaḥ snāpayāmāsa tattoyaiḥ pratyakṣaṁ śārṅgadhanvanaḥ

At that very moment the king brought his son and bathed him in that water, right there before Vishnu, the wielder of the Sharnga bow.

Verse 41 (skanda.6.93.41)

tataḥ sa bālakaḥ sadyaḥ snātamātro dvijottamāḥ kuṣṭhavyādhivinirmukto jāto bālārkasaṁnibhaḥ

O best of brahmins, then, the very moment that boy bathed, he was instantly freed from leprosy and became radiant as the rising sun.

Verse 42 (skanda.6.93.42)

tataḥ praṇamya taṁ devaṁ harṣeṇa mahatā'nvitaḥ pitrā samaṁ jagāmātha svakīyaṁ bhavanaṁ dvijāḥ

O brahmins, then, having bowed to that god, filled with great joy, he went with his father to his own dwelling.

Verse 43 (skanda.6.93.43)

tasmingate mahīpāle saputre tatkṣaṇāddhariḥ tadraṁdhraṁ pūrayāmāsa yathā no vetti kaścana

When the king had departed with his son, Hari instantly sealed that opening in such a way that no one could know of it.

Verse 44 (skanda.6.93.44)

etasmātkāraṇātpūrvaṁ tattoyaṁ sarvapāpahṛt yadgomukhena bhūyo'pi bhūtale prakaṭīkṛtam

For this very reason, that sin-destroying water had already existed there before, and it was that same water which was later revealed again on earth through a cow's mouth.

Verse 45 (skanda.6.93.45)

adyāpi tajjalasparśātsupavitro dharātale yaḥ snānaṁ sūryavāreṇa kurute'rkodayaṁ prati tasya nāśaṁ drutaṁ yāṁti galagaṁḍādikā iha

Even today the earth remains most sacred from the touch of that water; whoever bathes here on a Sunday at sunrise finds his goiter and similar ailments swiftly destroyed.

Verse 46 (skanda.6.93.46)

vyādhayopi mahāraudrā dadrupāmā samudbhavāḥ upasargodbhavāścaiva visphoṭakavicarcikā

Even the most dreadful diseases — ringworm, itch-born afflictions, disorders arising from possession, smallpox, and eczema — are likewise destroyed.

Verse 47 (skanda.6.93.47)

niṣkāmastu punarmartyo yaḥ snānaṁ tatra bhaktitaḥ kurute yāti lokaṁ sa devadevasya cakriṇaḥ

But whoever, free of worldly desire, bathes there with devotion attains the world of the discus-bearing god of gods.

Verse 48 (skanda.6.93.48)

yasmindine samānītā sā gaṁgā tatra viṣṇunā tasmindine vṛṣe sūryaḥ sthitaścitrāsu caṁdramāḥ

On the day that Ganga was brought there by Vishnu, the sun stood in Taurus and the moon in the Chitra constellation.

Verse 49 (skanda.6.93.49)

tithiścaikādaśī caiva devadevasya śārṅgiṇaḥ govaktreṇa tṛṇastaṁbaṁ yasmiṁścaiva tu vāsare samākṛṣṭaṁ ca tatraiva yoga evaṁ vyavasthitaḥ

The lunar day was the eleventh, sacred to the bow-bearing god of gods; and the very day on which the tuft of grass was pulled by a cow's mouth — this same conjunction of stars stands fixed there.

Verse 50 (skanda.6.93.50)

tathānye'pi dine tasminyadi toyamavāpya ca snānaṁ karoti sadbhaktyā tatphalaṁ so'pi cāpnuyāt

And even if, on some other day, a person obtains that water and bathes in it with true devotion, he too shall obtain the same fruit.
