Ambika Khanda · Chapter 106
The Trident Hurled
Verse 1 (skanda.8.106.1)
sanatkumāra uvāca | sa tathāpyāyito vyāsa balavānbhāskaradyutiḥ | citraṁ bahu ca śīghraṁ ca maṇḍalāni paribhramat
Sanatkumara said: O Vyasa, thus reinforced with strength, the mighty one, radiant as the sun, wheeled about in many wondrous and swift circles.
Verse 2 (skanda.8.106.2)
plutāni siṁhavat kṛtvā avalokayate sakṛt | pṛṣṭhataścāgrataścāpi punargajavadācarat
Leaping like a lion, he glanced about in a single instant; then, both behind and in front, he moved like an elephant.
Verse 3 (skanda.8.106.3)
punarvyāttānano bhūtvā śastrāṇi grasate ripoḥ | punarvṛkṣaiḥ śilābhiśca dānavān sa nyasūdayat
Then, opening his mouth wide, he swallowed the enemy's weapons; and again, with trees and boulders, he slew the danavas.
Verse 4 (skanda.8.106.4)
punarākāśago bhūtvā pakṣirāḍiva sobhramat | punarjahāsa saṁkruddho hyaśanīpātasannibham
Then, taking to the sky, he circled like the king of birds; then, growing wrathful, he laughed a laugh like the crash of a thunderbolt.
Verse 5 (skanda.8.106.5)
punaśca sūkṣmamātmānaṁ kṛtvā tasthāvathāgrataḥ | evantaṁ valgamānañca nardamānañca dānavaḥ
And then, making himself minute, he would stand directly before his foe. Seeing him thus leaping about and roaring, the danava Hiranyaksha -
Verse 6 (skanda.8.106.6)
uvāca bhṛkuṭīvaktro hiraṇyākṣobhinādayan | bho kṣudramṛga durbuddhe na tvaṁ mokṣamavāpsyasi
- his face knit in a frown, roared and said: "O foolish, puny beast, you shall not win your freedom.
Verse 7 (skanda.8.106.7)
hatvā tvāhaṁ pradāsyāmi rudrāya balimojasā | tvayā hataśchadmanā me bhrātā jyeṣṭho durātmanā | tasyādya karmaṇaḥ prāptaṁ phalaṁ duṣṭātmanastava
Having slain you, I shall by force offer you as an oblation to Rudra. Wicked one, you killed my elder brother through deceit; today, evil soul, you shall reap the fruit of that very deed."
Verse 8 (skanda.8.106.8)
sanatkumāra uvāca | tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā hiraṇyākṣasya saṁyuge | uvāca bhagavānviṣṇuḥ krodhayāno diteḥ sutam
Sanatkumara said: Hearing those words of Hiranyaksha on the battlefield, the blessed Vishnu, growing wrathful, said to the son of Diti:
Verse 9 (skanda.8.106.9)
hatosau narasiṁhena mayā daityaḥ pratāpavān | vikramya saṁyuge tadvadbhavatopi vadho dhruvaḥ
"That mighty daitya I slew as Narasimha, striving valiantly in battle; in the very same way your death too is now certain.
Verse 10 (skanda.8.106.10)
yadi tvaṁ gacchase khaṁ vā pātālaṁ vāpyataḥ param | parvataṁ vodadhiṁ vāpi na tathāpi vimokṣyase
Whether you flee to the sky, or to the netherworld or beyond it, or to a mountain or the ocean, still you shall not escape.
Verse 11 (skanda.8.106.11)
yatte balaṁ tapo yacca yā ca māyā tavāsura | tatsarvaṁ nirdhamāmyadya tava dehāt sajīvitam
Whatever strength, austerity, and magic power you possess, O asura - all of it, together with your life, I shall drive out of your body this very day."
Verse 12 (skanda.8.106.12)
hiraṇyākṣa uvāca | tvaṁ mayā śaraviṣṭabdho devairmantrairvimokṣitaḥ | baddhaṁ cāstreṇa bhūyastvāṁ pakṣirājo vyamocayat
Hiranyaksha said: "I once pinned you fast with my arrows, and the gods freed you with their spells; again, when I bound you with a weapon, the king of birds released you.
Verse 13 (skanda.8.106.13)
bhūyo mṛtastvaṁ durbuddhe devairujjīvito bhavaḥ | bhūyastvāhaṁ vadhiṣyāmi siṁho mṛgamivājane
Again you died, foolish one, and the gods brought you back to life. Once more I shall slay you now, as a lion slays a deer in the forest.
Verse 14 (skanda.8.106.14)
tava kā śaktiradyeha maheśvaramṛte varam | māṁ spraṣṭumapi hastena narasyeva hutāśanam
Save great Ishvara, what power have you here today even to touch me with your hand - as an ordinary man cannot touch fire with his hand?
Verse 15 (skanda.8.106.15)
tvaṁ lokamayamāsthāya śarīraṁ tairadhiṣṭhitam | sarvairāpyāyitaścaiva saṁyuge māmupāgataḥ
You have assumed a body made of all the worlds and inhabited by them, and it is only after being reinforced by all of them that you have come before me in this battle.
Verse 16 (skanda.8.106.16)
ahantu svena tapasā balena ca samanvitaḥ | na ca māṁ tvaṁ tathāpyadya śaktaḥ siṁhaṁ yathā mṛgaḥ
I, on the other hand, am endowed with my own austerity and strength alone; yet even so you are no more able to overpower me today than a deer is able to overpower a lion.
Verse 17 (skanda.8.106.17)
yoddhuṁ vāpyabhisartuṁ vā saha devairdurātmavān | na tvāvayoretadeva hyantaraṁ sumahattaram
Wicked soul, you are fit neither to fight nor to advance against me, even with all the gods at your side - this alone is the very great difference between the two of us.
Verse 18 (skanda.8.106.18)
yaḥ syātkulīno vidvānvā satāṁ mārge ca saṁsthitaḥ | sonenaiva jitaṁ matvā ātmānaṁ saṁyugaṁ tyajet
Whoever is well-born, or learned, or established in the path of the good, upon realizing that he is thereby already defeated, would abandon the fight altogether.
Verse 19 (skanda.8.106.19)
nirghṛṇastyaktalajjaśca chidraghātī durātmavān | tvadanyaḥ ko bhavettiryaṅ naitaddaityasya vidyate
Merciless, shameless, one who strikes at a weak point, evil of soul - who but you could be so brutish? Such conduct is not to be found in a well-born daitya.
Verse 20 (skanda.8.106.20)
na tvaṁ mama kṛto mṛtyurahantu tava saṁyuge | ete siddhāḥ prapaśyantu cāraṇāśca sahasraśaḥ | āvayorantaraṁ saṁkhye bahudhā yudhyamānayoḥ
You shall not become the cause of my death - rather, I shall be the cause of yours in this battle. Let these thousands of siddhas and charanas witness for themselves the difference between the two of us as we fight on, again and again."
Verse 21 (skanda.8.106.21)
sanatkumāra uvāca | evamuktvā hiraṇyākṣaḥ śarairāśīviṣopamaiḥ | jaghne varāhaṁ saṁkruddho vajrāśanisamatviṣam
Sanatkumara said: So saying, Hiranyaksha, enraged, struck the Boar - splendid as thunderbolt and lightning - with arrows like venomous serpents.
Verse 22 (skanda.8.106.22)
sotha tenārdyamānopi varāhaḥ sumahābalaḥ | gatvā vegena saṁkruddho rathaṁ jagrāha nādayan
Though tormented by him, the exceedingly mighty Boar rushed forward with speed and, roaring in fury, seized his chariot.
Verse 23 (skanda.8.106.23)
gṛhītvā kūbare cāpi ākṣipyotkṣipya vegavat | sāśvaṁ sasārathiṁ devaścikṣepa ca rarāsa ca
Seizing it by the pole, whirling it about and hurling it aloft with force, the god flung it - horses, charioteer and all - and roared as he did so.
Verse 24 (skanda.8.106.24)
tasya tvākṣepavikṣepaiśchinnayoktrāśca te hayāḥ | udbhrāntā rathamukhyaśca visandhiḥ samapadyata
By that whirling and hurling, the yoke-straps of his horses snapped; they bolted in confusion, and that fine chariot came apart at every joint.
Verse 25 (skanda.8.106.25)
hiraṇyākṣo rathaṁ tyaktvā padātirdhanuṣā tadā | mṛgendraṁ mohanāstreṇa balavānabhyatāḍayat
Hiranyaksha then abandoned his chariot and, on foot, bow in hand, struck the powerful lord of beasts with the weapon of delusion.
Verse 26 (skanda.8.106.26)
mohaḥ samāviśaccaiva taṁ devaṁ nandivardhanam | devairmantraprabhāveṇa naṣṭamohaḥ kṛtaḥ punaḥ
A stupor overcame the god Nandivardhana; but by the power of the gods' incantations, that stupor was again dispelled.
Verse 27 (skanda.8.106.27)
That lord of daityas, filled with rage, struck him again with weapons of many kinds, yet could bring him to no distress whatever.
Verse 28 (skanda.8.106.28)
athainaṁ sa mahātejā varāhaḥ prahasanniva | vṛkṣamutpāṭya vegena daityaṁ mūrdhni vyatāḍayat
Then the mighty Boar, as though smiling, tore up a tree and with great force struck the daitya upon the head.
Verse 29 (skanda.8.106.29)
tasya tena prahāreṇa daityasyābhihatasya ha | dhanuḥ papāta vegena hastāvāpaśca pañcakaḥ
Struck by that blow, the daitya's bow, and even the five-fingered guard upon his hand, fell from his grasp with force.
Verse 30 (skanda.8.106.30)
tato hāhā kṛtaṁ daityairdānavaiśca suduḥkhitaiḥ | śastraiśca bahubhiḥ kruddhā varāhaṁ samatāḍayan
Then the daityas and danavas, in great distress, cried out in dismay, and in fury struck at the Boar with many weapons.
Verse 31 (skanda.8.106.31)
sa hanyamānastairdaityairvyadāya sumahābalaḥ | mukhaṁ sarvāṇi śastrāṇi jagrāsa ca rarāsa ca
Though struck by those daityas, that mighty one opened his mouth wide, swallowed all their weapons, and roared aloud.
Verse 32 (skanda.8.106.32)
tattathā vikṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā hiraṇyākṣaḥ pratāpavān | śūlaṁ jagrāha saṁkruddhaḥ kṛtvā rudrāya vai namaḥ
Seeing this strange sight, mighty Hiranyaksha, enraged, bowed to Rudra and took up his trident.
Verse 33 (skanda.8.106.33)
tadyugāntānalaprakhyaṁ mahāśūlamatiprabham | cikṣepa daityaḥ saṁkruddho varāhāya mahāsvanam
That great trident, blazing like the fire of universal dissolution, of surpassing brilliance and thunderous roar, the enraged daitya hurled at the Boar.
Verse 34 (skanda.8.106.34)
tamāpatantaṁ bahudhā nadantaṁ jvālāḥ sphuliṅgāśca samudgirantam | dṛṣṭvā surāḥ siddhagaṇāśca sarve hāheti cakrurbhayamūḍhacittāḥ
Seeing it hurtling toward him, roaring again and again, spewing forth flames and sparks, all the gods and hosts of siddhas, their minds bewildered with fear, cried out in dismay.
