sanatkumāra uvāca | saṁkule vartamāne tu pramathāsurasainyayoḥ | śrūyante kārmukaravāḥ siṁhanādāśca dāruṇāḥ

Sanatkumara said: As the melee raged between the armies of the Pramathas and Asuras, the twang of bows and dreadful lion-roars were heard.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.134.2)

vyāviddhāṅgulayo devaścāraṇoragaguhyakāḥ | neduruddhūtavastrāntā yuddhoddhavakṛtasvanāḥ

The gods, Charanas, serpents, and Guhyakas, snapping their fingers, their garment-ends fluttering, cried out, making sounds born of the excitement of battle.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.134.3)

śūrārasitaśabdena tenodīritavikramāḥ | cakruḥ karmāṇyasahyāni darpitāḥ pramathāsurāḥ

Stirred to valor by that sound of heroes' shouts, the proud Pramathas and Asuras performed unbearable feats.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.134.4)

asibhirvyāyitaiśchinnāḥ paṭṭiśairbhinnavakṣasaḥ | śarasaṁkṛttamarmāṇaḥ patanti pramathāsurāḥ

Cut by swords wielded with force, their chests pierced by pattishas, their vital points severed by arrows, the Pramathas and Asuras fell.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.134.5)

śirasāṁ pātyamānānāṁ bahūnāṁ corubhiḥ saha | rāśayastatra dṛśyante pramathāsurasaṁyuge

Heaps of the many heads being felled, together with thighs, are seen there in the battle of Pramathas and Asuras.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.134.6)

bhagnacakrā vidhvajāśca vivarūthā vikūbarāḥ | dṛśyante śataśo vyaśvā hatasārathayo rathāḥ

Chariots with broken wheels, bannerless, without protective plating, without poles, are seen by the hundreds, horseless, their charioteers slain.

Verse 7 (skanda.8.134.7)

sapatākāḥ sakeyūrāḥ savarmāyudhaketavaḥ | niṣkṛṣṭadantamuśalāḥ patanti gajapuṅgavāḥ

Lordly elephants, with flags, with armlets, with armor, weapons, and standards, their tusk-clubs torn out, fall.

Verse 8 (skanda.8.134.8)

śaraprahārarugṇāṅgāścāmarāpīḍakojjvalāḥ | sasādino nipātyante hayāḥ sūryahayopamāḥ

Horses, resembling the sun's steeds, their limbs broken by arrow-blows, radiant with fly-whisk crests, are struck down together with their riders.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.134.9)

udbhrāntaisturagaistrastairdānavaiḥ sarathairapi | tadbalaṁ prababhau mattaṁ bhrāntagrāhārṇavopamam

With bewildered, frightened horses, and Danavas together with their chariots, that intoxicated army appeared like a bewildered ocean full of sea-monsters.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.134.10)

vāsobhirātapatraiśva mukuṭairmaṇikuṇḍalaiḥ | hārārdhahāraiḥ keyūrairaṅgulīyaiḥ sraguttamaiḥ

With garments, and parasols, with crowns, jeweled earrings; with necklaces, half-necklaces, armlets, rings, and excellent garlands—

Verse 11 (skanda.8.134.11)

karānanaiḥ prakṛttaiśca caraṇaiśca nipātitaiḥ | yuddhabhūmirvṛtā bhāti dyaurnakṣatrairivoditaiḥ

—and with severed hands and faces, and fallen feet, the battlefield, thus strewn, shone like the sky risen with stars.

Verse 12 (skanda.8.134.12)

rudhirāsrāvavasanā nānābharaṇabhūṣaṇāḥ | raktavastrāvṛtairgātrairmahī mṛtyurivābabhau

With garments streaming blood, adorned with various ornaments, the earth, its limbs covered with red-hued garments, appeared like Death itself.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.134.13)

atha vājigajaughānāṁ śoṇitodakavāhinī | nadī pravavṛte ghorā yamasādanavāhinī

Then a dreadful river, carrying the blood-water of hosts of horses and elephants, flowed forth, bearing the dead to the abode of Yama.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.134.14)

mṛgahastikharāśvoṣṭramahāgrāhasamākulā | māṁsamedoyakṛtpaṁkā dhanurdhvajaśatadrumā

Thronged with deer, elephants, donkeys, horses, camels, and great sea-monsters; its mud made of flesh, fat, and liver; its hundred logs being bows and banners.

Verse 15 (skanda.8.134.15)

chinnaśīrṣopalaśatā hastapaśvānanoragā | keśaśaivālasaṁchannā dhanurjyāśatatantukā

With its hundred boulders being severed heads, its hands, animal-faces, and serpents; covered with hair as its water-weeds; its hundred threads being bowstrings.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.134.16)

pāṇḍarāmbaraharṣā vai mukuṭāṭikulākulā | bherīkacchapasaṁkīrṇā varābharaṇadardurā

Delighted with pale garments as its foam, thronged with crowds of crowns as its floating debris, filled with kettledrums as its tortoises, its fine ornaments as its frogs.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.134.17)

śaramīnasamākīrṇā khaḍganakradurāsadā | rathacakramahānakrā gadayādoviloḍitā

Teeming with arrows as its fish, made impassable by swords as its crocodiles; its chariot-wheels as its great crocodiles, stirred by maces as its aquatic monsters.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.134.18)

viśīrṇahārasikatā kaphasaṁjātapheninī | raktotpalānāṁ māleva kauṅakumī sragibojjhitā

Its sand being scattered pearl-necklaces, its foam born of phlegm; like a garland of red lotuses, saffron-hued, as if cast off.

Verse 19 (skanda.8.134.19)

jihvevoragarājasya yamasyājñā ivādbhutā | bhayadā bhīruyodhānāṁ śūrāṇāṁ harṣavardhinī | pravṛttā rudhirāmbhobhiḥ svargalokavahā nadī

Like the tongue of the king of serpents, like the wondrous command of Yama, terrifying to cowardly warriors, increasing the joy of heroes — that river, flowing with waters of blood, became the one carrying the fallen to the world of heaven.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.134.20)

saṁrabdhadaityendravivṛddhadhūmaṁ nandīśvarāgnijvalitāntarālam | babhau balaṁ sāgaratulyanādaṁ vināśi yadvajjagadantakāle

That army, its smoke increased by the enraged lords of the Daityas, its inner spaces ablaze with Nandishvara's fire, appeared, with a roar equal to the ocean's, as if it were the world's destruction at the time of doomsday.
