The Hymn on Uma's Wedding

Verse 1 (skanda.8.14.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। अथ वृत्ते विवाहे तु भवस्यामिततेजसः । प्रहर्षमतुलं गत्वा देवाः सह पितामहाः

sanatkumāra uvāca| atha vṛtte vivāhe tu bhavasyāmitatejasaḥ | praharṣamatulaṁ gatvā devāḥ saha pitāmahāḥ

Sanatkumara said: Now, when the wedding of Bhava, of measureless splendor, was concluded, the gods together with the Grandsire, overcome with matchless joy—

Verse 2 (skanda.8.14.2)

तुष्टुवुर्वाग्भिरिष्टाभिः प्रणमन्तो महेश्वरम् । नमः पर्वतलिङ्गाय पर्वतेशाय वै नमः

tuṣṭuvurvāgbhiriṣṭābhiḥ praṇamanto maheśvaram | namaḥ parvataliṅgāya parvateśāya vai namaḥ

—praised Maheshvara with cherished hymns, bowing before him: Salutation to the one whose Linga is the mountain, salutation indeed to the Lord of the mountain.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.14.3)

नमः पवनवेगाय विरूपायाजिताय च । नमः क्लेशविनाशाय दात्रे च शुभसम्पदाम्

namaḥ pavanavegāya virūpāyājitāya ca | namaḥ kleśavināśāya dātre ca śubhasampadām

Salutation to the one swift as the wind, to the formless and unconquered one; salutation to the destroyer of afflictions, the bestower of auspicious fortune.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.14.4)

नमो नीलशिखण्डाय अम्बिकापतये नमः । नमः पवनरूपाय शतरूपाय वै नमः

namo nīlaśikhaṇḍāya ambikāpataye namaḥ | namaḥ pavanarūpāya śatarūpāya vai namaḥ

Salutation to the blue-crested one, salutation to the Lord of Ambika; salutation to the wind-formed one, salutation indeed to the hundred-formed one.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.14.5)

नमो भैरवरूपाय विरूपनयनाय च । नमः सहस्रनेत्राय सहस्रचरणाय च

namo bhairavarūpāya virūpanayanāya ca | namaḥ sahasranetrāya sahasracaraṇāya ca

Salutation to the one of Bhairava's form, and to the one of fierce eyes; salutation to the thousand-eyed, and to the thousand-footed one.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.14.6)

नमो वेदरहस्याय वेदाङ्गाय नमो नमः । विष्टम्भनाय शक्रस्य बाहोर्वेदाङ्कुराय च

namo vedarahasyāya vedāṅgāya namo namaḥ | viṣṭambhanāya śakrasya bāhorvedāṅkurāya ca

Salutation again and again to the mystery of the Vedas, to the one who is the very limbs of the Veda; salutation to the one who checks the arm of Shakra, and who is the sprouting seed of the Veda.

Verse 7 (skanda.8.14.7)

चराचराधिपतये शमनाय नमो नमः । सलिलेशयलिङ्गाय युगान्तायतलिङ्गिने

carācarādhipataye śamanāya namo namaḥ | salileśayaliṅgāya yugāntāyataliṅgine

Salutation again and again to the Lord of all moving and unmoving beings, the great pacifier; to the one whose Linga rests upon the waters, and whose Linga extends till the end of the age.

Verse 8 (skanda.8.14.8)

नमः कपालमालाय कपालस्रग्विणे नमः । नमः कपालहस्ताय दंष्ट्रिणे गदिने नमः

namaḥ kapālamālāya kapālasragviṇe namaḥ | namaḥ kapālahastāya daṁṣṭriṇe gadine namaḥ

Salutation to the one garlanded with skulls, salutation to the wearer of a skull-wreath; salutation to the one who bears a skull in hand, to the fanged one, and to the mace-bearer.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.14.9)

नमस्त्रैलोक्यनाथाय सप्तलोकनताय च । नमः खट्वाङ्गहस्ताय प्रमथार्त्तिहराय च

namastrailokyanāthāya saptalokanatāya ca | namaḥ khaṭvāṅgahastāya pramathārttiharāya ca

Salutation to the Lord of the three worlds, and to the one before whom the seven worlds bow; salutation to the bearer of the khatvanga staff, and to the remover of the Pramathas' distress.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.14.10)

नमो यज्ञशिरोहर्त्रे कृष्णकेशापहारिणे । भगनेत्रनिपाताय पूष्णो दन्तहराय च

namo yajñaśirohartre kṛṣṇakeśāpahāriṇe | bhaganetranipātāya pūṣṇo dantaharāya ca

Salutation to the one who severed the head of the sacrifice, and tore away Krishna's hair; to the one who struck down Bhaga's eye, and took away Pushan's teeth.

Verse 11 (skanda.8.14.11)

नमः पिनाकशूलासिखड्गमुद्गरधारिणे । नमोस्तु कालकालाय तृतीयनयनाय च

namaḥ pinākaśūlāsikhaḍgamudgaradhāriṇe | namostu kālakālāya tṛtīyanayanāya ca

Salutation to the bearer of the Pinaka bow, trident, sword, blade, and mace; salutation to the Death of Death, and to the three-eyed one.

Verse 12 (skanda.8.14.12)

अन्तकान्तकृते चैव नमः पर्वतवासिने । सुवर्णरेतसे चैव शंखकुण्डलधारिणे

antakāntakṛte caiva namaḥ parvatavāsine | suvarṇaretase caiva śaṁkhakuṇḍaladhāriṇe

Salutation also to the one who ends the ender of life, and to the dweller of the mountain; to the one of golden seed, and to the wearer of conch-shaped earrings.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.14.13)

वडवानलयोगनाशाय योगिनां गुरवे नमः । शशाङ्कादित्यनेत्राय ललाटनयनाय च

vaḍavānalayoganāśāya yogināṁ gurave namaḥ | śaśāṅkādityanetrāya lalāṭanayanāya ca

Salutation to the one who, like the submarine fire, destroys all delusive yoga, the teacher of yogis; to the one whose eyes are the moon and the sun, and who bears an eye upon the forehead.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.14.14)

नमः श्मशानरतये श्मशानवरदाय च । नमो दैवतनाथाय त्र्यम्बकाय नमो नमः

namaḥ śmaśānarataye śmaśānavaradāya ca | namo daivatanāthāya tryambakāya namo namaḥ

Salutation to the one who delights in the cremation ground, and grants boons there; salutation again and again to the Lord of the gods, the three-eyed one.

Verse 15 (skanda.8.14.15)

अशनीशतहासाय ब्रह्मण्यायाजिताय च । गृहस्थसाधवे नित्यं जटिने ब्रह्मचारिणे

aśanīśatahāsāya brahmaṇyāyājitāya ca | gṛhasthasādhave nityaṁ jaṭine brahmacāriṇe

Salutation to the one whose laughter resounds like a hundred thunderbolts, who favors the Brahmins and is unconquered; who is ever the virtuous householder, the matted-haired one, and the eternal celibate.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.14.16)

नमो मुण्डार्धगण्डाय पशूनां पतये नमः । सलिले तप्यमानाय योगैश्वर्यप्रदाय च

namo muṇḍārdhagaṇḍāya paśūnāṁ pataye namaḥ | salile tapyamānāya yogaiśvaryapradāya ca

Salutation to the one with a half-shaven skull, salutation to the Lord of creatures; to the one who performs austerity in the waters, and who bestows the majesty of yoga.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.14.17)

नमः शान्ताय दान्ताय प्रलयोत्पत्तिकारिणे । नमोनुग्रहकर्त्रे च स्थितिकर्त्रे नमो नमः

namaḥ śāntāya dāntāya pralayotpattikāriṇe | namonugrahakartre ca sthitikartre namo namaḥ

Salutation to the peaceful, self-controlled one, the cause of both dissolution and creation; salutation again and again to the one who grants grace, and who sustains all existence.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.14.18)

नमो रुद्राय वसवे आदित्यायाश्विने नमः । नमः पित्रेऽथ साध्याय विश्वेदेवाय वै नमः

namo rudrāya vasave ādityāyāśvine namaḥ | namaḥ pitre'tha sādhyāya viśvedevāya vai namaḥ

Salutation to Rudra, to Vasu, to Aditya, and salutation to the Ashvin; salutation to the ancestral spirit, and then to the Sadhya, and salutation indeed to the Vishvedeva.

Verse 19 (skanda.8.14.19)

नमः शिवाय शर्वाय उग्राय वरदाय च । नमो भीमाय सेनान्ये पशूनां पतये नमः

namaḥ śivāya śarvāya ugrāya varadāya ca | namo bhīmāya senānye paśūnāṁ pataye namaḥ

Salutation to Shiva, to Sharva, to Ugra, and to the boon-giver; salutation to Bhima, to the commander of hosts, and to the Lord of creatures.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.14.20)

शुचये रेरिहाणाय सद्योजाताय वै नमः । महादेवाय चित्राय नमश्चित्ररथाय च

śucaye rerihāṇāya sadyojātāya vai namaḥ | mahādevāya citrāya namaścitrarathāya ca

Salutation to the pure one, to the one who ever delights, and indeed to Sadyojata; salutation to Mahadeva, to the wondrous one, and to the one whose chariot is wondrous.

Verse 21 (skanda.8.14.21)

प्रधानायाप्रमेयाय कार्याय करणाय च । पुरुषाय नमस्तेस्तु पुरुषेच्छाकराय च

pradhānāyāprameyāya kāryāya karaṇāya ca | puruṣāya namastestu puruṣecchākarāya ca

Salutation to Pradhana, the immeasurable, to the effect and to the cause; salutation to you, the Purusha, and to the one who fulfills the Purusha's will.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.14.22)

नमः पुरुषसंयोगप्रधानगुणधारिणे । प्रवर्तकाय प्रकृतेः पुरुषस्य च सर्वशः

namaḥ puruṣasaṁyogapradhānaguṇadhāriṇe | pravartakāya prakṛteḥ puruṣasya ca sarvaśaḥ

Salutation to the one who holds the qualities uniting Purusha and Pradhana; to the mover of both Prakriti and Purusha in every respect.

Verse 23 (skanda.8.14.23)

कृताकृतस्य संवेत्रे फलसंयोगदाय च । कालज्ञाय च सर्वत्र नमो नियमचारिणे

kṛtākṛtasya saṁvetre phalasaṁyogadāya ca | kālajñāya ca sarvatra namo niyamacāriṇe

Salutation to the knower of both the done and the undone, who bestows union with their fruits; salutation everywhere to the knower of time, who ever moves within the bounds of law.

Verse 24 (skanda.8.14.24)

नमो वैषम्यकर्त्रे च गुणानां वृत्तिदाय च । नमस्ते देवदेवेश नमस्ते भूतभावन । शिवः सौम्यः सुखो द्रष्टुं भव सोमो हि नः प्रभो

namo vaiṣamyakartre ca guṇānāṁ vṛttidāya ca | namaste devadeveśa namaste bhūtabhāvana | śivaḥ saumyaḥ sukho draṣṭuṁ bhava somo hi naḥ prabho

Salutation to the one who causes the disparity of the Gunas, and who grants their very functioning; salutation to you, O Lord of the gods; salutation to you, O source of all beings — be gracious, gentle, and pleasant to behold; O Lord, be indeed benign to us.

Verse 25 (skanda.8.14.25)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। एवं स भगवान्देवो जगत्पतिरुमापतिः । स्तूयमानः सुरैः सर्वैरमरानिदमब्रवीत्

sanatkumāra uvāca| evaṁ sa bhagavāndevo jagatpatirumāpatiḥ | stūyamānaḥ suraiḥ sarvairamarānidamabravīt

Sanatkumara said: Thus praised by all the gods, that Blessed Lord, master of the universe and husband of Uma, spoke these words to the immortals.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.14.26)

द्रष्टुं सुखश्च सौम्यश्च देवानामस्मि भो सुराः । परं ब्रूत यथेष्टं वो दातास्मि वदतानघाः

draṣṭuṁ sukhaśca saumyaśca devānāmasmi bho surāḥ | paraṁ brūta yatheṣṭaṁ vo dātāsmi vadatānaghāḥ

'O gods, I am indeed pleasant, gentle, and delightful to behold for the celestials; tell me, O sinless ones, whatever supreme boon you desire — speak, and I shall grant it.'

Verse 27 (skanda.8.14.27)

ततस्ते प्रणताः सर्वे ऊचुः सब्रह्मकाः सुराः । तथैव भगवन्नस्तु वर एषोवतिष्ठताम्

tataste praṇatāḥ sarve ūcuḥ sabrahmakāḥ surāḥ | tathaiva bhagavannastu vara eṣovatiṣṭhatām

Then all the gods, together with Brahma, bowed down and said: 'So be it, O Lord — let this very boon remain reserved for now.'

Verse 28 (skanda.8.14.28)

यदा कार्यं तदा नस्त्वं दास्यसे वरमीप्सितम् । एवमस्त्विति तानुक्त्वा विसृज्य च सुरान् हरः । लोकांश्च प्रमथैः सार्धं विवेश भवनं ततः

yadā kāryaṁ tadā nastvaṁ dāsyase varamīpsitam | evamastviti tānuktvā visṛjya ca surān haraḥ | lokāṁśca pramathaiḥ sārdhaṁ viveśa bhavanaṁ tataḥ

'When the need arises, you shall then grant us the boon we desire.' Saying 'so be it' to them, Hara dismissed the gods, and thereafter, together with the worlds and the Pramathas, entered his own abode.

Verse 29 (skanda.8.14.29)

यस्तु हरोत्सवमद्भुतमेतं गायति दैवतविप्रसमक्षम् । सोप्रतिरूपगणेशसमानो देहविपर्ययमेत्य सुखी स्यात्

yastu harotsavamadbhutametaṁ gāyati daivataviprasamakṣam | sopratirūpagaṇeśasamāno dehaviparyayametya sukhī syāt

Whoever sings of this wondrous festival of Hara in the presence of gods and Brahmins, upon leaving this body becomes equal in form to the attendants of Ganesha, and attains happiness.

Verse 30 (skanda.8.14.30)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। पाराशर्य स्तवं हीमं शृणुयाद्यः पठेत वा । स स्वर्गलोकगो भूत्वा पूज्यतेमरराडिव

sanatkumāra uvāca| pārāśarya stavaṁ hīmaṁ śṛṇuyādyaḥ paṭheta vā | sa svargalokago bhūtvā pūjyatemararāḍiva

Sanatkumara said: O son of Parashara, whoever hears or recites this hymn becomes a dweller of the heavenly world, and is honored there like the king of the immortals.
