The Battle with Andhaka

Verse 1 (skanda.8.152.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । विष्णुं मर्द्यमानं तु दानवान् दानवार्दनम् । जम्भोम्बुद इवारावं कृत्वा दुद्राव दानवः

sanatkumāra uvāca | viṣṇuṁ mardyamānaṁ tu dānavān dānavārdanam | jambhombuda ivārāvaṁ kṛtvā dudrāva dānavaḥ

Sanatkumara said: Then the danava Jambha, roaring like a thundercloud, charged at Vishnu, the crusher of danavas, even as Vishnu was mauling the danava host.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.152.2)

तमापतन्तं दृष्ट्वा तु जम्भमम्बुदनिस्वनम् । न स संविविजे देवः सिंहो दृष्ट्वेव कुञ्जरम्

tamāpatantaṁ dṛṣṭvā tu jambhamambudanisvanam | na sa saṁvivije devaḥ siṁho dṛṣṭveva kuñjaram

Seeing Jambha charging at him, roaring like a thundercloud, the god did not flinch, as a lion does not flinch at the sight of an elephant.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.152.3)

कुजम्भश्चैव जम्भश्च यवीयान दानवाचलः । अनन्तमन्तं शत्रूणामाववार ररास च

kujambhaścaiva jambhaśca yavīyāna dānavācalaḥ | anantamantaṁ śatrūṇāmāvavāra rarāsa ca

Kujambha and Jambha, and their younger brother, a mountain among danavas, blocked Ananta, ender of foes, and roared.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.152.4)

वृत्रोञ्जनगिरिप्रख्यः संवर्त्तकनिकाशदृक् । जिघृक्षुरभ्यगादिन्द्रं नदमानः पयोदवत्

vṛtroñjanagiriprakhyaḥ saṁvarttakanikāśadṛk | jighṛkṣurabhyagādindraṁ nadamānaḥ payodavat

Vritra, dark as the mountain of collyrium, his gaze like the fire of dissolution, roaring like a raincloud, advanced upon Indra, eager to seize him.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.152.5)

तं धावन्तं नदन्तं च दानवं शतलोचनः । कुहरे गिरीसंकाश माजघान पुरन्दरः

taṁ dhāvantaṁ nadantaṁ ca dānavaṁ śatalocanaḥ | kuhare girīsaṁkāśa mājaghāna purandaraḥ

That charging, roaring danava, huge as a mountain, thousand-eyed Purandara struck in the hollow of the throat.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.152.6)

भावयत्यो गदायोधी शतायुं वायुमाहवे । योद्धुकामोभ्ययात्तूर्णं जगर्ज च जहास च

bhāvayatyo gadāyodhī śatāyuṁ vāyumāhave | yoddhukāmobhyayāttūrṇaṁ jagarja ca jahāsa ca

Wielding his mace, Shatayu, eager for combat, rushed swiftly at Vayu in the fray, roaring and laughing.

Verse 7 (skanda.8.152.7)

तुहुण्डहुण्डावश्विभ्यामयुध्येतां महासुरौ । प्रह्लादेन भगस्सार्धमंशेन च विरोचनः

tuhuṇḍahuṇḍāvaśvibhyāmayudhyetāṁ mahāsurau | prahlādena bhagassārdhamaṁśena ca virocanaḥ

The two great asuras Tuhunda and Hunda fought the twin Ashvins, while Bhaga clashed with Prahlada, and Amsha with Virochana.

Verse 8 (skanda.8.152.8)

अर्यमाणं यमञ्चैव युद्धेतां विल्वकेल्वलौ । विप्रचित्तिमुखा ये च बलिष्वग्रा महासुराः

aryamāṇaṁ yamañcaiva yuddhetāṁ vilvakelvalau | vipracittimukhā ye ca baliṣvagrā mahāsurāḥ

The daityas Vilvaka and Kelvala fought Aryaman and Yama, and Viprachitti and the other great asuras who led Bali's host joined the fray.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.152.9)

गणेश्वरांस्ते देवांश्च अयुध्यन्त सहस्रशः । अन्धकस्तु समागम्य नन्दिनं दानवर्षभः

gaṇeśvarāṁste devāṁśca ayudhyanta sahasraśaḥ | andhakastu samāgamya nandinaṁ dānavarṣabhaḥ

By the thousands they fought the lords of the ganas and the gods. Meanwhile Andhaka, foremost of the danavas, closed in upon Nandi.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.152.10)

ततक्षे वत्सरदनैः शरैः कार्मुकनिःसृतैः । सोन्धकेन दृढं विद्धः शरैर्मर्मविदारणैः

tatakṣe vatsaradanaiḥ śaraiḥ kārmukaniḥsṛtaiḥ | sondhakena dṛḍhaṁ viddhaḥ śarairmarmavidāraṇaiḥ

With calf-tooth-tipped shafts loosed from his bow he gashed him; and he himself was pierced hard by Andhaka's vital-rending arrows.

Verse 11 (skanda.8.152.11)

चुकोप नन्दी क्रुद्धश्च ससारान्धकमहाहवे । सवज्रमुद्यम्य करं दिवाकरकरप्रभम्

cukopa nandī kruddhaśca sasārāndhakamahāhave | savajramudyamya karaṁ divākarakaraprabham

Nandi grew furious with rage and rushed into the great battle against Andhaka, raising his hand together with a thunderbolt bright as sunbeams.

Verse 12 (skanda.8.152.12)

ररास नन्दी संरब्धः पयोद इव संक्षये । वज्रेण शतधारेण सोन्धकस्य गणेश्वरः

rarāsa nandī saṁrabdhaḥ payoda iva saṁkṣaye | vajreṇa śatadhāreṇa sondhakasya gaṇeśvaraḥ

That lord of the ganas, Nandi, enraged, roared like a storm-cloud at the world's end, and struck Andhaka with his hundred-edged thunderbolt.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.152.13)

चूर्णयामास तुरगान्नियन्तारं रथं तथा । ततोन्धकं कर्णमूले कुण्डलालकशोभिते

cūrṇayāmāsa turagānniyantāraṁ rathaṁ tathā | tatondhakaṁ karṇamūle kuṇḍalālakaśobhite

He shattered his horses, charioteer, and chariot; then he struck Andhaka at the root of the ear, adorned with earring and curling locks.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.152.14)

आजघान घनारावो वरदश्चारुकुण्डलः । तेनाप्यपावृत्य हस्तो हस्तिहस्तनिभस्ततः

ājaghāna ghanārāvo varadaścārukuṇḍalaḥ | tenāpyapāvṛtya hasto hastihastanibhastataḥ

The cloud-voiced, boon-granting Nandi, fair-eared, struck the blow; and Andhaka's arm, huge as an elephant's trunk, was wrenched aside by it.

Verse 15 (skanda.8.152.15)

पातितो नन्दिनः क्रोडे कुञ्जरेणेव संयुगे । अपहस्ताहतस्तेन दानवेन गणेश्वरः

pātito nandinaḥ kroḍe kuñjareṇeva saṁyuge | apahastāhatastena dānavena gaṇeśvaraḥ

As in battle two great tuskers collide, Andhaka was flung into Nandi's grasp; yet struck by that danava's open-handed blow, the lord of the ganas himself reeled.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.152.16)

अपासर्पत् पदान्यष्टौ तान्येवापतितः पुनः । साधु साध्विति वै दैत्यास्ततो ह्यन्धकमब्रुवन्

apāsarpat padānyaṣṭau tānyevāpatitaḥ punaḥ | sādhu sādhviti vai daityāstato hyandhakamabruvan

He reeled back eight paces, then fell again upon that same spot; and the daityas cried 'Well done! Well done!' to Andhaka.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.152.17)

स तेन सुप्रहारेण दानवं प्रति रोषितः । क्रोधमाहारयन्तीव्रमभिदुद्राव चैव हि

sa tena suprahāreṇa dānavaṁ prati roṣitaḥ | krodhamāhārayantīvramabhidudrāva caiva hi

Enraged by that heavy blow, Nandi, gathering fierce wrath against the danava, charged straight at him.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.152.18)

तस्य गत्वा धनुश्चित्रं कवचं च महाप्रभम् । वज्रेण शतधारेण खण्डशः प्रचकार ह

tasya gatvā dhanuścitraṁ kavacaṁ ca mahāprabham | vajreṇa śatadhāreṇa khaṇḍaśaḥ pracakāra ha

Reaching him, Nandi shattered his splendid bow and his radiant armour to pieces with his hundred-edged thunderbolt.

Verse 19 (skanda.8.152.19)

बाहुपाशेन चैवैनं बद्ध्वा भूतपतिः स्वयम् । इयेष भूमौ निष्पेष्टुमन्धकश्चावमोचयत्

bāhupāśena caivainaṁ baddhvā bhūtapatiḥ svayam | iyeṣa bhūmau niṣpeṣṭumandhakaścāvamocayat

The lord of the bhutas himself bound him fast in the noose of his arms and sought to grind him into the earth, but Andhaka wrenched himself free.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.152.20)

स मोचयित्वा ह्यात्मानं मायामास्थाय मोहनीम् । अभिदुद्राव शैलादिं तिष्ठतिष्ठेति चोचिवान्

sa mocayitvā hyātmānaṁ māyāmāsthāya mohanīm | abhidudrāva śailādiṁ tiṣṭhatiṣṭheti cocivān

Freeing himself, resorting to a bewildering power of illusion, he rushed upon Shailadi, crying, 'Stand, stand!'

Verse 21 (skanda.8.152.21)

तमापतन्तं वेगेन गणेश्वरमहत्तराः । सर्वे संक्रुद्धमनसो विविधायुधपाणयः

tamāpatantaṁ vegena gaṇeśvaramahattarāḥ | sarve saṁkruddhamanaso vividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ

As he charged with such speed, the greatest of the lords of the ganas, all enraged, weapons of every kind in hand, converged upon him.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.152.22)

नन्दिषेणः सोमनन्दी शंकुकर्णो महोदरः । घण्टाकर्णो वीरभद्रः स च देवः प्रभामयः

nandiṣeṇaḥ somanandī śaṁkukarṇo mahodaraḥ | ghaṇṭākarṇo vīrabhadraḥ sa ca devaḥ prabhāmayaḥ

Nandishena, Somanandi, Shankukarna, Mahodara, Ghantakarna, Virabhadra, and the radiant god Prabhamaya -

Verse 23 (skanda.8.152.23)

भर्त्तारमभिरक्षन्तस्तेषां पारिषदाग्रगाः । अन्धकं योधयन्ति स्म सिंहाः शक्रगजं यथा

bharttāramabhirakṣantasteṣāṁ pāriṣadāgragāḥ | andhakaṁ yodhayanti sma siṁhāḥ śakragajaṁ yathā

Foremost of their lord's attendants, guarding him, they fought Andhaka as lions might fight Indra's elephant.

Verse 24 (skanda.8.152.24)

तं नन्दिषेणः शूलेन सोमनन्दी च मुष्टिना । शरेण वीरभद्रश्च घण्टाकर्णोसिनापि च

taṁ nandiṣeṇaḥ śūlena somanandī ca muṣṭinā | śareṇa vīrabhadraśca ghaṇṭākarṇosināpi ca

Nandishena struck him with a spear, Somanandi with his fist, Virabhadra with an arrow, and Ghantakarna with a sword.

Verse 25 (skanda.8.152.25)

शङ्कुकर्णो चलाग्रेण पादपेन प्रभामयः । अन्धकं चिच्छिदुर्देवा द्रमिडा इव चन्दनम्

śaṅkukarṇo calāgreṇa pādapena prabhāmayaḥ | andhakaṁ cicchidurdevā dramiḍā iva candanam

Shankukarna with a mountain-crag, Prabhamaya with a tree - thus those gods hacked at Andhaka, as woodsmen of the south hack at a sandal tree.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.152.26)

नन्दीश्वरस्तु गणपो गणपैर्विमुखीकृतम् । आजघानोत्तमाङ्गे तु अन्धकं दानवाधिपम्

nandīśvarastu gaṇapo gaṇapairvimukhīkṛtam | ājaghānottamāṅge tu andhakaṁ dānavādhipam

Then Lord Nandi, chief of the ganas, struck a blow upon the head of Andhaka, lord of the danavas, now driven back by the ganas.

Verse 27 (skanda.8.152.27)

दृष्ट्वासुरपतिं देवैर्गणपैः समभिद्रुतम् । असुराणां बले जज्ञे धाव गृह्णेति निस्वनः

dṛṣṭvāsurapatiṁ devairgaṇapaiḥ samabhidrutam | asurāṇāṁ bale jajñe dhāva gṛhṇeti nisvanaḥ

Seeing their lord of asuras beset by the gods and the ganapatis, a cry of 'Run! Seize him!' rose up in the army of the asuras.

Verse 28 (skanda.8.152.28)

ततोसुराः समाजग्मुः प्रह्लादप्रमुखा द्रुतम् । तान्युद्धायागतानेको विष्णुः सर्वानदीधरत्

tatosurāḥ samājagmuḥ prahlādapramukhā drutam | tānyuddhāyāgatāneko viṣṇuḥ sarvānadīdharat

Then the asuras led by Prahlada rushed swiftly there; but Vishnu alone held back all of them as they came on to fight.

Verse 29 (skanda.8.152.29)

चक्रहस्तं तु दृष्ट्वैवं विक्रान्तं रणमूर्धनि । चकार सुमहद्वेगमन्धकः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः

cakrahastaṁ tu dṛṣṭvaivaṁ vikrāntaṁ raṇamūrdhani | cakāra sumahadvegamandhakaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ

Seeing the discus-bearer thus displaying his valour at the forefront of battle, Andhaka, half-swooning with rage, mustered a mighty onrush.

Verse 30 (skanda.8.152.30)

व्यायच्छमानं निश्चेष्टं प्रधावन्तं प्रगर्जितम् । यं यतः पश्यतेसौ वै तंतं विव्याध सायकैः

vyāyacchamānaṁ niśceṣṭaṁ pradhāvantaṁ pragarjitam | yaṁ yataḥ paśyatesau vai taṁtaṁ vivyādha sāyakaiḥ

Whomever he saw, wherever - straining, standing still, running, or roaring - that one he pierced with his arrows.

Verse 31 (skanda.8.152.31)

पृथवः पीतनिशिता गरुडाङ्गरुहन्धराः । अन्धकस्य शरा घोराश्च्यवन्ते धनुषोक्षयाः

pṛthavaḥ pītaniśitā garuḍāṅgaruhandharāḥ | andhakasya śarā ghorāścyavante dhanuṣokṣayāḥ

Broad, keen, yellow, fledged with garuda-feathers, Andhaka's terrible shafts flew ceaselessly from his never-emptying bow.

Verse 32 (skanda.8.152.32)

मुखेषु दन्तवेष्टेषु उदरेषु करेषु च । अन्धकेन गजा विद्धास्त्यजन्त्यतिमदा मदम्

mukheṣu dantaveṣṭeṣu udareṣu kareṣu ca | andhakena gajā viddhāstyajantyatimadā madam

Pierced by Andhaka in trunk, tusk-socket, belly, and foot, elephants maddened with rut lost their frenzy.

Verse 33 (skanda.8.152.33)

अन्ये श्रयन्ति देवेशमन्ये चेन्द्रं सुराधिपम् । देवं नारायणं चान्ये नन्दिनं चापरे गणाः

anye śrayanti deveśamanye cendraṁ surādhipam | devaṁ nārāyaṇaṁ cānye nandinaṁ cāpare gaṇāḥ

Some ganas took shelter with the lord of the gods, some with Indra, chief of the gods, some with Narayana, and others with Nandi.

Verse 34 (skanda.8.152.34)

अन्ये शाखं विशाखं च कुमारमपि चापरे । व्यपाश्रित्य स्थिता देवाः शकुन्ता इव पादपान्

anye śākhaṁ viśākhaṁ ca kumāramapi cāpare | vyapāśritya sthitā devāḥ śakuntā iva pādapān

Other gods took refuge with Shakha, Vishakha, and Kumara, and stood there, as birds take shelter in trees.

Verse 35 (skanda.8.152.35)

यथाशनिभयान्मर्त्या यथा सिंहभयान्मृगाः । यथा च गरुडान्नित्यं भुजगा भुजगाशिनः

yathāśanibhayānmartyā yathā siṁhabhayānmṛgāḥ | yathā ca garuḍānnityaṁ bhujagā bhujagāśinaḥ

As mortals flee the terror of the thunderbolt, as deer flee the terror of the lion, and as serpents ever flee garudas, devourers of serpents -

Verse 36 (skanda.8.152.36)

तथान्धकस्य युद्धस्था देवा दैवतवैरिणः । वित्रेसुः शरजालार्त्ता मूढा इव च बभ्रमुः

tathāndhakasya yuddhasthā devā daivatavairiṇaḥ | vitresuḥ śarajālārttā mūḍhā iva ca babhramuḥ

so, on that field, the gods trembled before Andhaka, foe of the gods, and tormented by his net of arrows, wandered about as if dazed.

Verse 37 (skanda.8.152.37)

बन्धुजीववनं यद्वद् भ्राजते पुष्पसन्नतम् । तथा व्रणजसिक्ताङ्गं तद् बभौ पार्षदं बलम्

bandhujīvavanaṁ yadvad bhrājate puṣpasannatam | tathā vraṇajasiktāṅgaṁ tad babhau pārṣadaṁ balam

As a grove of bandhujiva trees, bowed under its blossoms, glows red, so that host of attendants, its limbs drenched with the blood of wounds, shone.

Verse 38 (skanda.8.152.38)

कम्पन्ते पादपा यद्वत् काननेष्वनिलेरिताः । तथान्धकभयाद्देवाः सन्त्रस्ता रणमूर्धनि

kampante pādapā yadvat kānaneṣvanileritāḥ | tathāndhakabhayāddevāḥ santrastā raṇamūrdhani

As trees in a forest tremble, stirred by the wind, so the gods, terrified by Andhaka, shook at the forefront of battle.

Verse 39 (skanda.8.152.39)

ततो नारायणोनन्त ऊर्जितः शक्र एव च । अश्विनौ वसवश्चाष्टावादित्या द्वादशैव तु

tato nārāyaṇonanta ūrjitaḥ śakra eva ca | aśvinau vasavaścāṣṭāvādityā dvādaśaiva tu

Then mighty Narayana, Ananta, and Indra too, the two Ashvins, the eight Vasus, and the twelve Adityas -

नन्दी विशाखः शाखश्च वीरभद्रः प्रभामयः । विट्पतिः शंकुकर्णश्च सोमनन्दी विनायकः

nandī viśākhaḥ śākhaśca vīrabhadraḥ prabhāmayaḥ | viṭpatiḥ śaṁkukarṇaśca somanandī vināyakaḥ

Nandi, Vishakha, Shakha, Virabhadra, Prabhamaya, Vitpati, Shankukarna, Somanandi, and Vinayaka -

Verse 41 (skanda.8.152.41)

एते बले हन्यमाने अन्धकेन बलोर्मिभिः । दुद्रुवुस्सायुधा देवास्तं दानवगणाधिपम्

ete bale hanyamāne andhakena balormibhiḥ | dudruvussāyudhā devāstaṁ dānavagaṇādhipam

As their army was being struck down by the surging waves of Andhaka's forces, these gods, weapons in hand, rushed at that lord of the danava hosts.

Verse 42 (skanda.8.152.42)

गन्धर्वभवनाकारं तं तस्य रथसत्तमम् । परिवार्य बभंजुस्ते जगर्जुश्च पयोदवत्

gandharvabhavanākāraṁ taṁ tasya rathasattamam | parivārya babhaṁjuste jagarjuśca payodavat

Surrounding his splendid chariot, resplendent as a gandharva-city, they smashed it to pieces and roared like thunderclouds.

Verse 43 (skanda.8.152.43)

भज्यमानः सुरैरासीदन्धकस्य महारथः । अधर्मे प्रकृतो यद्वद् विघ्नैरिव मनोरथः

bhajyamānaḥ surairāsīdandhakasya mahārathaḥ | adharme prakṛto yadvad vighnairiva manorathaḥ

As it was smashed by the gods, Andhaka's great chariot appeared like a wicked resolve broken apart by obstacles.

Verse 44 (skanda.8.152.44)

चक्रायुधं स चक्रेण शक्रं वज्रेण दानवः । अनन्तमिषुणैकेन शूलेन च विनायकम्

cakrāyudhaṁ sa cakreṇa śakraṁ vajreṇa dānavaḥ | anantamiṣuṇaikena śūlena ca vināyakam

That danava struck the discus-bearer with a discus, Indra with a thunderbolt-shaft, Ananta with a single arrow, and Vinayaka with a spear.

Verse 45 (skanda.8.152.45)

मुष्टिना नन्दिनं चैव पट्टिशेन प्रभामयम् । भल्लेन चैव पूषाणं गदया यममेव च

muṣṭinā nandinaṁ caiva paṭṭiśena prabhāmayam | bhallena caiva pūṣāṇaṁ gadayā yamameva ca

Nandi he struck with his fist, Prabhamaya with a pattisha-blade, Pusha with a broad-headed shaft, and Yama with a mace.

Verse 46 (skanda.8.152.46)

आहत्य वैरिणस्तूर्णं सर्वानेव रणेन्धकः । उत्पत्य चानदद् व्योम्नि जलमत्त इवाम्बुदः

āhatya vairiṇastūrṇaṁ sarvāneva raṇendhakaḥ | utpatya cānadad vyomni jalamatta ivāmbudaḥ

Having thus swiftly struck down every foe in battle, Andhaka leapt into the sky and roared like a cloud drunk with rain.

Verse 47 (skanda.8.152.47)

स कूटयोधी कूटानि गिरीणां गिरिसन्निभः । सवृक्षक्षुपसर्पाणि ससर्ज च जगर्ज च

sa kūṭayodhī kūṭāni girīṇāṁ girisannibhaḥ | savṛkṣakṣupasarpāṇi sasarja ca jagarja ca

Mighty as a mountain, a master of deceptive battle, he conjured up and hurled down mountain-crags complete with trees, thickets, and serpents, and roared.

Verse 48 (skanda.8.152.48)

गिर्यग्रवर्षं तद् घोरं सवृक्षर्क्षमहोरगम् । पपात देवसैन्येषु शीतमम्बुरुहेष्विव

giryagravarṣaṁ tad ghoraṁ savṛkṣarkṣamahoragam | papāta devasainyeṣu śītamamburuheṣviva

That terrible downpour of mountain-peaks, with their trees, bears and great serpents, fell upon the army of the gods, as a cold hailstorm falls upon a bed of lotuses.

Verse 49 (skanda.8.152.49)

अविराममविश्रामं निरुच्छ्वासं भयाकुलम्

avirāmamaviśrāmaṁ nirucchvāsaṁ bhayākulam

Unceasing, unresting, breath-stopping, stricken with terror - the remainder of this verse is lost in the source and does not survive.

Verse 50 (skanda.8.152.50)

छिन्ननासाक्षिदन्तौष्ठा भग्नपादकटीकराः । उत्त्रस्तोद्भ्रान्तचकिता दृश्यन्ते प्रमथामराः

chinnanāsākṣidantauṣṭhā bhagnapādakaṭīkarāḥ | uttrastodbhrāntacakitā dṛśyante pramathāmarāḥ

Their noses, eyes, teeth and lips gashed, their feet, hips and hands broken, the pramathas and immortals were seen terrified, dazed, and reeling.

Verse 51 (skanda.8.152.51)

सौधाग्रशृङ्गोपलशस्त्रवर्षी मुहुः सृजन्भात्यसुरोम्बरस्थः

saudhāgraśṛṅgopalaśastravarṣī muhuḥ sṛjanbhātyasurombarasthaḥ

Again and again raining down palace-pinnacles, boulders, and weapons, that asura, stationed in the sky, shone forth thus - the remainder of this verse is lost in the source.

Verse 52 (skanda.8.152.52)

अब्जं महद्धूमलावृतञ्च खद्योततुल्यं च महाग्निचूर्णम्

abjaṁ mahaddhūmalāvṛtañca khadyotatulyaṁ ca mahāgnicūrṇam

The opening line of this verse is lost in the source - he also poured down a great lotus-shape wrapped in smoke, and a great fire-powder like fireflies.

Verse 53 (skanda.8.152.53)

सोप्यायितोद्वृत्तसमुद्रनादो नभोगतो दैवतसंघवैरी । मुहुः सृजत्येव महाम्बुवर्षं यथान्तकालेम्बुमुगुग्रवर्षम्

sopyāyitodvṛttasamudranādo nabhogato daivatasaṁghavairī | muhuḥ sṛjatyeva mahāmbuvarṣaṁ yathāntakālembumugugravarṣam

That foe of the divine hosts, stationed in the sky, roaring like the surging, swollen ocean, poured down a mighty rain of water again and again, as the clouds pour a dreadful deluge at the time of universal dissolution.
