The Clipping of the Mountains' Wings

Chapter 171All chaptersChapter 173

Verse 1 (skanda.8.172.1)

sanatkumāra uvāca | śakreṇa girayaḥ pūrvaṁ chinnapakṣā yathā kṛtāḥ | tat pravakṣyāmi te vyāsa śṛṇu sarvamaśeṣataḥ

Sanatkumara said: How the mountains were once made wingless by Shakra - that I shall tell you, Vyasa; hear it all in full.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.172.2)

purā siṁhavapuḥ kṛtvā viṣṇunā paramaujasā | daityadānavanāthe tu hiraṇyakaśipau hate

Of old, Vishnu, having taken the form of a lion, of supreme might, when Hiranyakashipu, lord of the daityas and danavas, was slain -

Verse 3 (skanda.8.172.3)

prahrādastatsuto daityo viṣṇuṁ prati cukopa ha | hate pitari sa śrīmān mahādaityapatīśvaraḥ

Prahlada, his son, a daitya, grew wrathful toward Vishnu; his father slain, that glorious, mighty lord of the great daityas,

Verse 4 (skanda.8.172.4)

bahūnyabdasahasrāṇi cakārograṁ mahātapaḥ | atha devaścaturvaktrastuṣṭastamasurādhipam

performed fierce, great austerity for many thousand years. Then the four-faced god, pleased, to that lord of the asuras,

Verse 5 (skanda.8.172.5)

provāca svayamāgatya varadosmīti sādaram | praṇamyovāca varadamidaṁ brahmāṇamāgatam

came himself and spoke with regard, "I am a boon-giver." Bowing, he spoke to Brahma, the boon-giver, who had come:

Verse 6 (skanda.8.172.6)

prahlādo manyutaptāṅgaḥ piturvadhamanusmaran | bhagavan yadi tuṣṭosi varadaśca samāgataḥ

Prahlada, his limbs burning with wrath, remembering his father's death - "O Lord, if you are pleased and have come as a boon-giver,

Verse 7 (skanda.8.172.7)

rājānaṁ hatavān viṣṇuḥ pitaraṁ mama māyayā | saṁgrāme tamahaṁ viṣṇuṁ yathā hanyāṁ tathā kuru

Vishnu slew the king, my father, by his magic; grant that in battle I might slay that very Vishnu."

Verse 8 (skanda.8.172.8)

tamuvāca tato brahmā prahlādamasurottamam | ajayyaḥ samare viṣṇuravadhyaśca surāsuraiḥ

Then Brahma said to Prahlada, foremost of asuras: "Vishnu is unconquerable in battle and cannot be slain by gods or asuras.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.172.9)

prasādāddevadevasya jagatsraṣṭurumāpateḥ | naiṣa śakyo mayā dātuṁ varastubhyaṁ mahāsura

By the grace of the god of gods, the creator of the world, Uma's Lord, this boon I am not able to grant you, great asura.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.172.10)

anyaṁ vṛṇu yatheṣṭaṁ tvaṁ varaṁ yāvaddadāmi te | cintayitvā tato bhūyo mahābuddhirmahāsuraḥ

Choose another, whatever you wish, and I shall grant it to you." Then, pondering further, that great asura of great intellect,

Verse 11 (skanda.8.172.11)

provāca vacanaṁ devaṁ kamalāsanasaṁsthitam | ajayyo yadyavadhyaśca sa viṣṇurdevasattamaḥ

spoke this word to the god seated on the lotus-seat: "If that Vishnu, best of gods, is unconquerable and unslayable,

Verse 12 (skanda.8.172.12)

tasya viṣṇostato deva śakrasyānyasya vā ripoḥ | avadhyohamajayyaśca saṁbhaveyaṁ tavājñayā

then, O god, may I become unslayable and unconquerable by that Vishnu, or by Shakra, or by any other foe, by your command."

Verse 13 (skanda.8.172.13)

evastviti taṁ brahmā procya dānavasattama | divyapadmāsano devastatraivāntaradhīyata

"So be it," having said this to him, O best of danavas, the god, seated on his divine lotus-throne, vanished then and there.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.172.14)

prahlādopi varaṁ labdhvā brahmaṇaḥ paramādbhutam | paścimasyodadhestīre tasthau cintākulendriyaḥ

Prahlada too, having obtained that most wondrous boon from Brahma, remained on the shore of the western ocean, his senses troubled with anxious thought:

Verse 15 (skanda.8.172.15)

kathaṁ hanyāmahaṁ viṣṇuṁ śakraṁ caiva śatakratum | evaṁ cintayatastasya prahlādasya suradviṣaḥ

"How might I slay Vishnu, and Shakra of the hundred sacrifices?" As Prahlada, foe of the gods, was thus pondering,

Verse 16 (skanda.8.172.16)

sarvaśailādhipaḥ śrīmā~ścakraman himavān giriḥ | dvābhyāmutpatya pakṣābhyāmājagāma viyaccaraḥ

the glorious lord of all mountains, Himavat, the mountain, wandering, having risen up on two wings, came flying through the sky.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.172.17)

purā hi girayo vyāsa āsan pakṣasamanvitāḥ | divyā viyadgamāḥ sarve sarvalokacarāstathā

For of old, O Vyasa, the mountains possessed wings, all divine, sky-going, and roaming through every world.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.172.18)

tamāgatamatho dṛṣṭvā prahrādo himavadgirim | prāhedaṁ vacanaṁ prītaḥ kṛtvā svāgatamāditaḥ

Seeing that mountain Himavat arrived, Prahlada, pleased, having first welcomed him, spoke this word:

Verse 19 (skanda.8.172.19)

kaśyapasya vayaṁ pautrā daityā girivarādhipa | bhavantopi sutāstasya devā api mahāgire

"We are the grandsons of Kashyapa, we daityas, O lord of the best of mountains; you too are his sons, O great mountain, as are the gods.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.172.20)

asmākaṁ bhavatāṁ caiva ekasmāt saṁbhavo gire | devatā bhrātaro bhūtvā asmākaṁ devatāśca hi

Our origin and yours, indeed, is from one and the same source, O mountain; the gods, having become our brothers, are indeed our very deities.

Verse 21 (skanda.8.172.21)

avamanyāsurānasmān rājyaṁ kurvanti darpitāḥ | vayaṁ yūyaṁ ca saṁgatya jitvā devānaśeṣataḥ | trailokyaṁ sarvamākramya rājyaṁ kurmo mahāgire

Disdaining us asuras, they rule their kingdom, swollen with pride. Let us and you together, having conquered the gods entirely, overrun the whole of the three worlds and rule the kingdom, O great mountain.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.172.22)

devānāṁ yajanaṁ yeṣu hūyante yeṣu cāgnayaḥ | prīyante devatā yeṣu deśā~stānacaleśvara

Those regions where the worship of the gods takes place, where fires are kindled in oblation, where the deities are pleased, O lord of mountains -

Verse 23 (skanda.8.172.23)

sahitaḥ sarvaśailaistvamākramya tvaritaṁ jahi | ijyāhīnān tato devān sukhaṁ haṁsyāma nirvṛtāḥ

attack those, together with all the mountains, and swiftly destroy them; then, those gods deprived of their sacrifices, we shall slay them happily, at ease."

Verse 24 (skanda.8.172.24)

ityukto daityarājena himavānacalottamaḥ | naitadyuktamiti prāha sāśaṅko dānavādhipam

Thus addressed by the king of the daityas, Himavat, best of mountains, apprehensive, said to the lord of the danavas: "This is not fitting."

Verse 25 (skanda.8.172.25)

punareva tataḥ prāha himavantaṁ mahāsuraḥ | matto yuktaṁ paraṁ tvaṁ cedyadi vetsi nagādhipa

Then again the great asura said to Himavat: "If you know one more powerful than I, O lord of mountains, then say so.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.172.26)

eṣa tvāṁ sahitaṁ śailerneṣyāmi nidhanaṁ samam | apramattastadā tiṣṭha yāvattvāṁ hanmi parvata

I shall bring you, together with all the mountains, to death alike; stand ready then, unwary as you are, mountain, until I slay you."

Verse 27 (skanda.8.172.27)

daityarājaṁ tataḥ kruddhaṁ dṛṣṭvā parvatasattamaḥ | karomyevamiti prāha tato daityastutoṣa saḥ

Then, seeing the king of the daityas thus enraged, that best of mountains said, "I shall do as you say," and the daitya was then pleased.

Verse 28 (skanda.8.172.28)

atha śailaistadā sārdhaṁ himavānacalottamaḥ | prahlādasya vacaḥ śrutvā cakre deśopamardanam

Then Himavat, best of mountains, together with all the mountains, having heard Prahlada's words, laid waste the lands -

Verse 29 (skanda.8.172.29)

pitṛdevātmikāḥ sarvā yajñahomādikāḥ kriyāḥ | vartante yeṣu deśeṣu girayastān samākramana

all those regions where rites belonging to the ancestors and the gods, sacrifices, oblations, and the like, were performed, the mountains overran.

Verse 30 (skanda.8.172.30)

athotsanneṣu deśeṣu nārado munisattamaḥ | śakrāyāśrāvayat sarvaṁ parvatānāṁ vyatikramam

Then, those regions laid waste, Narada, best of sages, reported to Shakra everything, the mountains' transgression.

Verse 31 (skanda.8.172.31)

tacchrutvā krodhasantapto devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ | samāgamyācalān prāha kimetaditi manyumān

Hearing that, the king of the gods, of a hundred sacrifices, burning with rage, came to the mountains and said, filled with fury, "What is this?"

Verse 32 (skanda.8.172.32)

athocurgirayo vyāsa kruddhaṁ devagaṇādhipam | prahlādasya bhayāddeva mahādaityapatervayam

Then, O Vyasa, the mountains said this to the enraged lord of the gods: "Out of fear of Prahlada, O god, the great lord of the daityas, we,

Verse 33 (skanda.8.172.33)

imaṁ vyatikramaṁ prāptā na doṣo naḥ kathañcana | atha cenmanyase doṣamasmākamamarādhipa

have come to this transgression; there is no fault in us whatsoever. But if you deem it a fault of ours, O lord of the immortals,

Verse 34 (skanda.8.172.34)

prahrādāntikramāgaccha prayāma sahitā drutam | tenedaṁ kāritaṁ sarvaṁ yajñadeśopamardanam | daityarājena balinā yuṣmadapriyalipsayā

come with us, quickly, to confront Prahlada; all of this, the destruction of the sacrificial lands, was caused by him,

Verse 35 (skanda.8.172.35)

nāparādhoyamasmākaṁ tathā tvaṁ viddhi devapa | tāneva bruvataḥ śakraḥ sutarāṁ manyumān girīn

the mighty king of the daityas, out of desire to displease you; this is no offense of ours - know it thus, O protector of gods." As the mountains thus spoke, Shakra, all the more enraged,

Verse 36 (skanda.8.172.36)

pakṣahīnān tadā cakre kṣiptvā vajraṁ punaḥpunaḥ | hīnapakṣāstataste tu sarva evācaleśvarāḥ

made them wingless then, hurling his thunderbolt again and again. Wingless thereafter, all those lords of the mountains,

Verse 37 (skanda.8.172.37)

peturmahītale vyāsa chinnapakṣāḥ khagā iva | atha daityapatiḥ śrutvā prahrādosurapuṅgavaḥ

fell to the earth, O Vyasa, like birds with clipped wings. Then, hearing of it, the lord of the daityas, Prahlada, bull among asuras,

Verse 38 (skanda.8.172.38)

pakṣacchedaṁ nagendrāṇāṁ bhṛśaṁ cukrodha pīḍitaḥ | kiṅkaromīti saṁcintya ciraṁ daityagaṇādhipaḥ

grew exceedingly wrathful, aggrieved at the clipping of the great mountains' wings; pondering long what he should do, the lord of the daitya hosts,

Verse 39 (skanda.8.172.39)

vadaryāśramamāgatya dadarśa viṣṇumāsthitam | tasyāsīt sumahadyuddhaṁ viṣṇunā sārdhamadbhutam

went to Badari's hermitage and saw Vishnu seated there; a very great and wondrous battle ensued between him and Vishnu.

Verse 40 (skanda.8.172.40)

na śaśāka ca taṁ viṣṇurjetuṁ prahlādamojasā | tayoryuddhamabhūd ghoraṁ divyamabdaśataṁ purā

And Vishnu was not able, by his might, to conquer Prahlada; a terrible battle raged between them, once, for a hundred divine years.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.172.41)

ātmānaṁ veda hīnaṁ ca viṣṇuḥ prahlādadānavāt | sobhiyuktastadā yuddhe viṣṇuḥ paramadharmavit

Vishnu knew himself inferior to the danava Prahlada; then, engaged in that battle, Vishnu, most knowing of dharma,

Verse 42 (skanda.8.172.42)

aśakto dānavaṁ jetuṁ manyumānabhavat prabhuḥ | atha dhyātvā mahādevaṁ praṇamya ca punaḥ punaḥ

unable to conquer the danava, the Lord became filled with wrath. Then, meditating upon Mahadeva, and bowing again and again,

Verse 43 (skanda.8.172.43)

sasmāra para | pinākinaḥ

he called to mind the supreme [a portion of the text is lost here] ...of the trident-bearer.

Verse 44 (skanda.8.172.44)

avadhyatvamajayyatvaṁ sarvalokanivāsibhiḥ | prasādaṁ tamanusmṛtya śaivaṁ viṣṇuḥ surottamaḥ

Recalling that Shaiva grace of invincibility and unconquerability by all the world's inhabitants, Vishnu, best of gods,

Verse 45 (skanda.8.172.45)

mahāsatvabalo bhūtvā daityamabhyadravad balī | hīyamānamathātmānaṁ hiṇyakaśipoḥ sutaḥ

having become endowed with great strength and vigor, the mighty one charged at the daitya; then the son of Hiranyakashipu,

Verse 46 (skanda.8.172.46)

jñātvā ca balinaṁ viṣṇuṁ yuddhadeśādapākramat | ajitaṁ viṣṇunātmānaṁ śivatejovimohitaḥ

knowing Vishnu to have become powerful, withdrew from the field of battle; his own self unconquered by Vishnu, though bewildered by Shiva's power,

Verse 47 (skanda.8.172.47)

prahrādo jitamātmānaṁ bubudhe dānaveśvaraḥ | brahmaṇopi varaṁ labdhvā ajayayyatvamathātmanaḥ

Prahlada, lord of the danavas, believed himself the conqueror; having also obtained from Brahma the boon of his own unconquerability,

Verse 48 (skanda.8.172.48)

jitameva tadātmānamamanyata mahāsuraḥ | prahrādāsurasaṁgrāmaṁ ghoraṁ devabhayaṁkaram

that great asura deemed himself indeed the victor. The terrible battle of Prahlada the asura, dreadful to the gods,

Verse 49 (skanda.8.172.49)

abhūdabdaśataṁ divyaṁ viṣṇunā sārdhamadbhutam | na śrutena na vīryeṇa na śauryeṇa na tejasā

lasted a hundred divine years, wondrous, together with Vishnu. Not by learning, not by valor, not by heroism, not by splendor,

Verse 50 (skanda.8.172.50)

na buddhyā na ca dharmeṇa prahrādasadṛśosuraḥ | hiraṇyakaśipurnāsīdrājā tatsadṛśo mahān

not by intellect, and not by righteousness was there any asura equal to Prahlada; Hiranyakashipu was not, nor was any king so great, his equal.

Verse 51 (skanda.8.172.51)

nāndhako na hiraṇyākṣaḥ prahlādasadṛśo bale | bhṛguśāpāt kilāyāto daityatvaṁ viṣṇureva saḥ

Neither Andhaka nor Hiranyaksha was equal to Prahlada in might; it was indeed Vishnu himself who, by Bhrigu's curse, had come to that state of a daitya.

Verse 52 (skanda.8.172.52)

śauryeṇa spṛhayanti sma śrutena vinayena ca | divaukasopi saṁsiddhāḥ prahrādasya mahātmanaḥ

For his valor, his learning, and his humility, even the dwellers of heaven, though themselves accomplished, held Prahlada, that great soul, in high regard.

Verse 53 (skanda.8.172.53)

nābhavaṁstasya rājye tu duḥkhaśokānvitāḥ prajāḥ | evaṁ sa dānavaśreṣṭhaḥ kṛtvā yuddhaṁ tu viṣṇunā

In his kingdom, the people were not afflicted with sorrow and grief. Thus that foremost of danavas, having waged war with Vishnu,

Verse 54 (skanda.8.172.54)

paścāttāpopataptāṅgo viṣayebhyo gataspṛhaḥ | varadānamanityaṁ taj jñātvā ca tapasaḥ phalam

his limbs burning with remorse afterward, lost all longing for sensory objects; knowing that the granting of boons is impermanent, and the fruit of austerity likewise,

Verse 55 (skanda.8.172.55)

niḥspṛhaḥ sarvakāryeṣu viṣayepsāvivarjitaḥ | sarvasannyastakarmā tu dhyānābhyāsaparāyaṇaḥ

free of desire in all undertakings, devoid of craving for sensory objects, having renounced all action,

Verse 56 (skanda.8.172.56)

pravavrāja mahādaityaḥ śamepsurmokṣasiddhaye | punarāvartakaṁ janma buddhvā cānityatā parām

that great daitya, devoted to the practice of meditation, went forth as a mendicant, seeking peace, for the attainment of liberation, having realized the utter impermanence of rebirth that returns again and again.

Verse 57 (skanda.8.172.57)

kaṣṭaṁ rājyamiti jñātvā prahrādaḥ paramārthavit | abhiṣicya sutaṁ rājye ditijānāṁ virocanam

Knowing kingship to be a source of trouble, Prahlada, knower of the ultimate truth, having installed his son Virochana, of the sons of Diti,

Verse 58 (skanda.8.172.58)

daityadānavarājānaṁ kṛtvā tamasureśvaram | mokṣasiddhiṁ parāmicchan pravrajyākṛtaniścayaḥ

as king of the daityas and danavas, that lord of the asuras, desiring the supreme accomplishment of liberation, resolved upon renunciation,

Verse 59 (skanda.8.172.59)

varaṁ tattvamathānveṣṭuṁ guṇātītamajaṁ śivam | sākṣād bhagavataḥ śiṣyaṁ kapilasyāsuriṁ munim

to seek out the supreme reality, beyond the qualities, unborn, auspicious - approaching as a disciple the sage Asuri, direct disciple of the blessed Kapila,

Verse 60 (skanda.8.172.60)

śiṣyatvenopasaṁgamya mokṣavidyāmavāptavān | prakṛtīnāṁ paraṁ tattvaṁ vikārāṇāṁ paraṁ tathā

and, becoming his disciple, attained the knowledge of liberation - the supreme truth of the material principles (prakritis), and likewise of their transformations,

Verse 61 (skanda.8.172.61)

kṣetrajñaṁ puruṣaṁ jñātvā bhoktāraṁ bhoktṛvarjitam | mokṣavidyāparārthajñaḥ sāṁkhyasiddhāntapāragaḥ

knowing the field-knower, the Person, the experiencer devoid of experience; knowing well the ultimate meaning of the science of liberation, having mastered the Sankhya doctrine,

Verse 62 (skanda.8.172.62)

siddhaḥ pañcaśikho nāmnā sobhavanmunisattama | sa yogaṁ paramaṁ labdhvā sāṁkhyācāryo mahāmuniḥ | duḥkhatrayavinirmuktaḥ prāptavān padamavyayam

he became accomplished, known by the name Panchashikha, best of sages; having attained supreme yoga, that great sage, teacher of Sankhya, freed from the three kinds of suffering, attained the imperishable state.

Verse 63 (skanda.8.172.63)

śrīmānevaṁ tribhuvanaripurdaityarājo mahātmā kṛtvā vairaṁ vibudhaguruṇā viṣṇunā dīrghakālam | siddhaḥ paścājjagadabhayadaḥ prāptayogaśca bhūtvā muktaḥ paścāt sa padamamṛtaṁ brahma cādyaṁ hyavāpa

Thus that glorious, great-souled king of the daityas, foe of the three worlds, having waged war for a long time with Vishnu, teacher of the wise gods, became accomplished afterward, a giver of fearlessness to the world, having attained yoga; and thereafter, liberated, he attained the immortal, primal Brahman-state.

Verse 64 (skanda.8.172.64)

kṣetrajñaboddhā guṇaviprayukto duḥkhairvihīno bhavapāśabandhaiḥ | tāmisramohapratibandhamukto yogośvarosau ditijādhipobhūt

Knower of the field, free from the qualities, devoid of sufferings and the bonds of the noose of worldly existence, freed from the bondage of the darkness of delusion, he, the lord of yoga, became the ruler of the sons of Diti.

Verse 65 (skanda.8.172.65)

evaṁ tā~śchinnapakṣā~stu girīn sarvān purandaraḥ | pracakāra muniśreṣṭha prāk pṛṣṭo yadahaṁ tvayā

Thus did Purandara make all those mountains wingless, O best of sages - this, which you first asked me.
