Nandi's Hymn to Shiva

Verse 1 (skanda.8.21.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। निर्गतोऽथ ततो नन्दी जगाम सरितां वराम् । भुवनामिति विख्यातां सर्वलोकहितावहाम्

sanatkumāra uvāca| nirgato'tha tato nandī jagāma saritāṁ varām | bhuvanāmiti vikhyātāṁ sarvalokahitāvahām

Sanatkumara said: Then, having set out, Nandi went to an excellent river known as Bhuvana, bringer of welfare to all the worlds.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.21.2)

तां प्रविश्य ततो धीमानेकाग्रो द्युतिमाँस्थितः । स जजाप ततो रुद्रं मृत्योर्भीतः समाहितः

tāṁ praviśya tato dhīmānekāgro dyutimā~sthitaḥ | sa jajāpa tato rudraṁ mṛtyorbhītaḥ samāhitaḥ

Having entered her, that wise, radiant one stood there, single-minded. Then, fearing death, composed, he recited the name of Rudra.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.21.3)

जपता तेन तत्रैव तत्परेण तदाशिषा । कोटिरेका यदा जप्ता तदा देवस्तुतोष ह

japatā tena tatraiva tatpareṇa tadāśiṣā | koṭirekā yadā japtā tadā devastutoṣa ha

As he recited there, devoted, with that blessing in mind — when one crore recitations had been completed, the god became pleased.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.21.4)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। सोऽवतीर्य ततो भूयः प्रयतात्मा तथैव च । जजाप कोटिमन्यां तु रुद्रमेवानुचिन्तयन्

sanatkumāra uvāca| so'vatīrya tato bhūyaḥ prayatātmā tathaiva ca | jajāpa koṭimanyāṁ tu rudramevānucintayan

Sanatkumara said: Having come out, he then, again with self restrained, in the same way recited another crore, meditating on Rudra alone.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.21.5)

द्वितीयायां ततः कोट्यां संवृतायां वृषध्वजः । अभ्याजगाम तं चैव वरदोऽस्मीत्यभाषत

dvitīyāyāṁ tataḥ koṭyāṁ saṁvṛtāyāṁ vṛṣadhvajaḥ | abhyājagāma taṁ caiva varado'smītyabhāṣata

When the second crore had been completed, the Bull-bannered one came to him and said, 'I am the giver of boons.'

Verse 6 (skanda.8.21.6)

स प्राह भगवन् कोटिं तृतीयामधिकामहम् । जप्तुमिच्छामि देवेश त्वत्प्रसादात्त्वहं विभो

sa prāha bhagavan koṭiṁ tṛtīyāmadhikāmaham | japtumicchāmi deveśa tvatprasādāttvahaṁ vibho

He said: 'O Blessed One, I wish to recite a further, third crore, O lord of gods, by your grace, O mighty one.'

Verse 7 (skanda.8.21.7)

एवमस्त्विति भूयोपि भगवान् प्रत्युवाच ह । जगाम स्वं वेश्म देव्या सह महामतिः

evamastviti bhūyopi bhagavān pratyuvāca ha | jagāma svaṁ veśma devyā saha mahāmatiḥ

'So be it,' the Blessed One said again in reply (a small portion of the text is lost here); and the great-minded one went to his own abode together with the Goddess.

Verse 8 (skanda.8.21.8)

ततस्तृतीयां रुद्राणां कोटिमन्यां जजाप ह । युगान्तादित्यसंकाशः ततः समभवद् द्विजः

tatastṛtīyāṁ rudrāṇāṁ koṭimanyāṁ jajāpa ha | yugāntādityasaṁkāśaḥ tataḥ samabhavad dvijaḥ

Then he recited yet another, a third crore, of the names of the Rudras; and thereupon that brahmin became radiant like the sun at the end of an age.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.21.9)

तस्य कोटित्रये व्यास समाप्ते ज्वलनत्विषः । सोमः सह गणैर्देवस्तं देशमुपचक्रमे

tasya koṭitraye vyāsa samāpte jvalanatviṣaḥ | somaḥ saha gaṇairdevastaṁ deśamupacakrame

When the three crores of that one, blazing like fire, were completed, O Vyasa, the god Soma, together with his ganas, approached that place.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.21.10)

स तं करेण संगृह्य तद्वृत्तसलिलाच्च ह । संगृह्य ग्रहस्तेन नन्दिनं कालेनाब्रवीत्

sa taṁ kareṇa saṁgṛhya tadvṛttasalilācca ha | saṁgṛhya grahastena nandinaṁ kālenābravīt

Taking hold of him with his hand, and lifting him from the water surrounding him, he then, in due time, spoke to Nandi. (This verse is somewhat uncertain in the source.)

Verse 11 (skanda.8.21.11)

देवदेव उवाच। शैलादे वरदोऽहं ते तपसानेन तोषितः । साधु जप्तं त्वया धीमन् ब्रूहि यत्ते मनोगतम्

devadeva uvāca| śailāde varado'haṁ te tapasānena toṣitaḥ | sādhu japtaṁ tvayā dhīman brūhi yatte manogatam

The God of gods said: 'O son of Shilada, I am pleased with you by this austerity, and I am the giver of your boon. Well have you recited, O wise one; tell me what is in your heart.'

Verse 12 (skanda.8.21.12)

शैलादिरुवाच। जपेयं कोटिमन्यां वै भूयोपि तव तेजसा । वरमेतं वृणे देव यदि तुष्टोऽसि मे विभो

śailādiruvāca| japeyaṁ koṭimanyāṁ vai bhūyopi tava tejasā | varametaṁ vṛṇe deva yadi tuṣṭo'si me vibho

The son of Shilada said: 'I would recite yet another crore, once more, by your power. I choose this boon, O god, if you are pleased with me, O mighty one.'

Verse 13 (skanda.8.21.13)

भगवानुवाच। शैलादे तव तुष्टोऽस्मि साम्बिकः । यं त्वद्य वृणुषे कामं सर्वं तं प्रददामि ते

bhagavānuvāca| śailāde tava tuṣṭo'smi sāmbikaḥ | yaṁ tvadya vṛṇuṣe kāmaṁ sarvaṁ taṁ pradadāmi te

The Blessed One said: 'O son of Shilada... (a small portion of text is lost here)... I, together with Ambika, am pleased with you. Whatever desire you now choose, all of it I grant to you.'

Verse 14 (skanda.8.21.14)

ब्रह्मत्वमथ विष्णुत्वमिन्द्रत्वमथवान्यताम् । आदित्यो भव रुद्रौ वा ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते

brahmatvamatha viṣṇutvamindratvamathavānyatām | ādityo bhava rudrau vā brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te

'The state of Brahma, or of Vishnu, or of Indra, or any other; become the sun, or one of the Rudras — tell me, what shall I do for you?'

Verse 15 (skanda.8.21.15)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। स एवमुक्तो देवेन शिरसा पादयोर्नतः । तुष्टाव पुरकामांगक्रतुपर्वतनाशनम्

sanatkumāra uvāca| sa evamukto devena śirasā pādayornataḥ | tuṣṭāva purakāmāṁgakratuparvatanāśanam

Sanatkumara said: Thus addressed by the god, he bowed his head at his feet, and praised him — the destroyer of the triple city, of Kama's body, of the sacrifice, and of pride.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.21.16)

नमो देवाधिदेवाय महादेवाय वै नमः । नमः कामांगनाशाय नीलकंठाय वै नमः

namo devādhidevāya mahādevāya vai namaḥ | namaḥ kāmāṁganāśāya nīlakaṁṭhāya vai namaḥ

Salutation to the god of gods, salutation to Mahadeva; salutation to the destroyer of Kama's body, salutation to the blue-throated one.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.21.17)

नमस्तुषितनाशाय त्रैलोक्यदमनाय च । नमः कालाग्रदण्डाय उग्रदण्डाय वै नमः

namastuṣitanāśāya trailokyadamanāya ca | namaḥ kālāgradaṇḍāya ugradaṇḍāya vai namaḥ

Salutation to the destroyer of Tushita, and to the subduer of the three worlds; salutation to him whose rod stands at the forefront of time, salutation to the fierce-rodded one.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.21.18)

सर्वतः पाणिपादाय सर्वतोक्षिमुखाय च । सर्वतः प्रभवे चैव सर्वमावृत्य तिष्ठते

sarvataḥ pāṇipādāya sarvatokṣimukhāya ca | sarvataḥ prabhave caiva sarvamāvṛtya tiṣṭhate

To him whose hands and feet are everywhere, and whose eyes and faces are everywhere; to him who has power everywhere, and who stands pervading all.

Verse 19 (skanda.8.21.19)

नमस्ते रुक्मवर्णाय तथैवातीन्द्रियाय च । नमः कनकलिंगाय सर्वलिंगाय वै नमः

namaste rukmavarṇāya tathaivātīndriyāya ca | namaḥ kanakaliṁgāya sarvaliṁgāya vai namaḥ

Salutation to you of golden hue, and likewise to the one beyond the senses; salutation to him of the golden linga, salutation to him of every form.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.21.20)

नमश्चन्द्रार्कवर्णाय योगेशायाजिताय च । पिनाकपाणये चैव शूलमुद्गरपाणये

namaścandrārkavarṇāya yogeśāyājitāya ca | pinākapāṇaye caiva śūlamudgarapāṇaye

Salutation to him of the hue of moon and sun, to the lord of yoga, the unconquered one; to him who holds the Pinaka bow, and to him whose hand holds the trident and mace.

Verse 21 (skanda.8.21.21)

निषङ्गिणे खड्गिने च परश्वधधराय च । रथिने चर्मिणे चैव महेशाय च वै नमः

niṣaṅgiṇe khaḍgine ca paraśvadhadharāya ca | rathine carmiṇe caiva maheśāya ca vai namaḥ

To him with the quiver, with the sword, and bearing the axe; to the charioteer, to the shield-bearer, and salutation to Mahesha.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.21.22)

नमस्त्रिशूलहस्ताय उग्रदण्डधराय च । नमो गणाधिपतये रुद्राणां पतये नमः

namastriśūlahastāya ugradaṇḍadharāya ca | namo gaṇādhipataye rudrāṇāṁ pataye namaḥ

Salutation to him whose hand holds the trident, and who bears the fierce rod; salutation to the lord of the ganas, salutation to the lord of the Rudras.

Verse 23 (skanda.8.21.23)

नमः सहस्रनेत्राय शतनेत्राय वै नमः । आदित्यानां पतये वसूनां पतये नमः

namaḥ sahasranetrāya śatanetrāya vai namaḥ | ādityānāṁ pataye vasūnāṁ pataye namaḥ

Salutation to the thousand-eyed, salutation to the hundred-eyed; salutation to the lord of the Adityas, salutation to the lord of the Vasus.

Verse 24 (skanda.8.21.24)

नमः पृथिव्याः पतये आकाशपतये नमः । नमः स्वर्लोकपतये उमायाः पतये नमः

namaḥ pṛthivyāḥ pataye ākāśapataye namaḥ | namaḥ svarlokapataye umāyāḥ pataye namaḥ

Salutation to the lord of the earth, salutation to the lord of the sky; salutation to the lord of the heavenly world, salutation to the lord of Uma.

Verse 25 (skanda.8.21.25)

नमो योगाधिगम्याय सर्वयोगप्रदाय च । ध्यानिनां ध्यायमानाय ध्यानिभिः संस्तुताय च

namo yogādhigamyāya sarvayogapradāya ca | dhyānināṁ dhyāyamānāya dhyānibhiḥ saṁstutāya ca

Salutation to him attainable through yoga, and to the giver of all yoga; to him meditated upon by meditators, and praised by them.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.21.26)

मृत्यवे कालदण्डाय यमाय च महात्मने । देवाधिपतये चैव दिव्यसंहननाय च

mṛtyave kāladaṇḍāya yamāya ca mahātmane | devādhipataye caiva divyasaṁhananāya ca

To Death, to the rod of Time, and to the great-souled Yama; and to the lord of gods, of divine constitution.

Verse 27 (skanda.8.21.27)

यज्ञाय वसुदानाय स्वर्गदाय जयाय च । सवित्रे सर्वदेवानां धर्मायानेकरूपिणे

yajñāya vasudānāya svargadāya jayāya ca | savitre sarvadevānāṁ dharmāyānekarūpiṇe

To the sacrifice, to the giver of wealth, to the giver of heaven, and to victory; to the begetter of all the gods, to Dharma of many forms.

Verse 28 (skanda.8.21.28)

अमृताय वरेण्याय सर्वदेवस्तुताय च । ब्रह्मणश्च शिरोहर्त्रे यज्ञस्य च महात्मनः

amṛtāya vareṇyāya sarvadevastutāya ca | brahmaṇaśca śirohartre yajñasya ca mahātmanaḥ

To the immortal one, the most excellent, praised by all the gods; to him who took off the head of Brahma, and of the sacrifice, the great-souled one.

Verse 29 (skanda.8.21.29)

त्रिपुरघ्नाय चोग्राय सर्वाशुभहराय च । उमादेहार्धरूपाय ललाटनयनाय च

tripuraghnāya cogrāya sarvāśubhaharāya ca | umādehārdharūpāya lalāṭanayanāya ca

To the destroyer of Tripura, the fierce one, and to the remover of all inauspiciousness; to him whose form is half the body of Uma, and who bears an eye on his forehead.

Verse 30 (skanda.8.21.30)

महिषान्धकभर्त्रे च द्रष्ट्रे च परमेष्ठिने । ब्रह्मणे गुरवे चैव ब्रह्मणे जनकाय च

mahiṣāndhakabhartre ca draṣṭre ca parameṣṭhine | brahmaṇe gurave caiva brahmaṇe janakāya ca

To the destroyer of Mahisha and Andhaka, to the seer, to the one dwelling in the highest place; to Brahman, to the preceptor, and to the father of Brahma.

Verse 31 (skanda.8.21.31)

कुमारगुरवे चैव कुमारवरदाय च । हलिने मुशलघ्नाय महाहासाय वै नमः

kumāragurave caiva kumāravaradāya ca | haline muśalaghnāya mahāhāsāya vai namaḥ

To the preceptor of Kumara, and to the giver of boons to Kumara; to him who bears the plough, who slays with the club, salutation to the one of great laughter.

Verse 32 (skanda.8.21.32)

मृत्युपाशाग्रहस्ताय तक्षकब्रह्मसूत्रिणे । सविद्युद्घनवाताय तथैव वृषयायिने

mṛtyupāśāgrahastāya takṣakabrahmasūtriṇe | savidyudghanavātāya tathaiva vṛṣayāyine

To him whose hand holds the noose of death, to him for whom Takshaka is the sacred thread; to him accompanied by lightning, cloud, and wind, and likewise to him who rides the bull.

Verse 33 (skanda.8.21.33)

हिमवद्विन्ध्यवासाय मेरोः पृष्ठनिवासिने । कैलासवासिने चैव धनेश्वरसखाय च

himavadvindhyavāsāya meroḥ pṛṣṭhanivāsine | kailāsavāsine caiva dhaneśvarasakhāya ca

To him who dwells on the Himalaya and the Vindhya, who resides on the summit of Meru; to the dweller on Kailasa, and to the friend of the lord of wealth.

Verse 34 (skanda.8.21.34)

विष्णुदेहार्धदत्ताय तस्यैव वरदाय च । सर्वभूताधियज्ञाय सर्वभूतानुकम्पिने

viṣṇudehārdhadattāya tasyaiva varadāya ca | sarvabhūtādhiyajñāya sarvabhūtānukampine

To him to whom half of Vishnu's body was given, and who is the giver of boons to him; to him who presides over the sacrifice in all beings, and is compassionate to all beings.

Verse 35 (skanda.8.21.35)

अन्तर्भूतादिभूताय प्राणिनां जीवदाय च । नमस्ते मन्यमानाय अभिमानाय चैव हि

antarbhūtādibhūtāya prāṇināṁ jīvadāya ca | namaste manyamānāya abhimānāya caiva hi

To him who is the inner being within all beings, and the giver of life to living creatures; salutation to you, the thinker, and to self-conception itself.

Verse 36 (skanda.8.21.36)

बुध्यमानाय बोध्याय द्रष्ट्रे वै चक्षुषे नमः । नमस्ते स्पर्शयित्रे च तथैव रसनाय च

budhyamānāya bodhyāya draṣṭre vai cakṣuṣe namaḥ | namaste sparśayitre ca tathaiva rasanāya ca

To him who understands, and who is to be understood, to the seer, salutation to the eye; salutation to you, the giver of touch, and likewise to taste.

Verse 37 (skanda.8.21.37)

नमो घ्राणाय घ्रात्रे च श्रोत्रे श्रोत्राय चैव हि । हस्तिने चैव हस्ताय तथा पादाय पादिने

namo ghrāṇāya ghrātre ca śrotre śrotrāya caiva hi | hastine caiva hastāya tathā pādāya pādine

Salutation to smell and to the smeller, to the ear and to hearing; to him who has hands and to the hand, likewise to the foot and to him who has feet.

Verse 38 (skanda.8.21.38)

नमोस्त्वानन्दकर्त्रे च आनन्दाय च ते नमः । वाचेथ वाग्मिने चैव तन्मात्राय महात्मने

namostvānandakartre ca ānandāya ca te namaḥ | vācetha vāgmine caiva tanmātrāya mahātmane

Salutation to the maker of bliss, and salutation to bliss itself; to speech and to the eloquent one, and to the subtle elements, O great-souled one.

Verse 39 (skanda.8.21.39)

सूक्ष्माय चैव स्थूलाय सत्वाय रजसे नमः । नमश्च तपसे नित्यं क्षेत्रज्ञायाजिताय च

sūkṣmāya caiva sthūlāya satvāya rajase namaḥ | namaśca tapase nityaṁ kṣetrajñāyājitāya ca

To the subtle and to the gross, salutation to sattva and to rajas; and salutation ever to austerity, to the knower of the field, and to the unconquered one.

Verse 40 (skanda.8.21.40)

विष्णवे लोककर्त्रे च प्रजानां पतये नमः । नमः सप्तर्षये चैव तप्यमानाय तापिने

viṣṇave lokakartre ca prajānāṁ pataye namaḥ | namaḥ saptarṣaye caiva tapyamānāya tāpine

To Vishnu, to the maker of the worlds, salutation to the lord of creatures; salutation to the presiding spirit of the seven sages, and to him performing austerity, the scorcher.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.21.41)

ब्रह्मण्याय च तथा दुर्वाससे नमः । शिल्पिने शिल्पनाथाय विदुषे विश्वकर्मणे

brahmaṇyāya ca tathā durvāsase namaḥ | śilpine śilpanāthāya viduṣe viśvakarmaṇe

To him devoted to the good of brahmins (a portion of text is lost here), and salutation to Durvasas; to the craftsman, to the lord of crafts, to the wise Vishvakarma.

Verse 42 (skanda.8.21.42)

अत्रये भृगवे चैव वसिष्ठाय नमोऽस्तु ते । भूताय भूतनाथाय पतये नमः

atraye bhṛgave caiva vasiṣṭhāya namo'stu te | bhūtāya bhūtanāthāya pataye namaḥ

To Atri and to Bhrigu, and salutation be to you, Vasishtha; to the being, to the lord of beings (a portion of text is lost here), salutation to the lord.

Verse 43 (skanda.8.21.43)

तिष्ठते द्रवते चैव गायते नृत्यतेपि च । अवश्यायाप्यवध्याय अजरायामराय च

tiṣṭhate dravate caiva gāyate nṛtyatepi ca | avaśyāyāpyavadhyāya ajarāyāmarāya ca

To him who stands, who flows, who sings, and who also dances; to the morning dew, to the one who cannot be slain, to the ageless, to the immortal.

Verse 44 (skanda.8.21.44)

अक्षयायाप्ययायैव तथाप्रतिहताय च । अनावेश्याय सर्वेषां दृश्याऽदृश्यस्वरूपिणे

akṣayāyāpyayāyaiva tathāpratihatāya ca | anāveśyāya sarveṣāṁ dṛśyā'dṛśyasvarūpiṇe

To the imperishable, to dissolution itself, and likewise to the unobstructed one; to him who cannot be entered by anything, whose form is both visible and invisible.

Verse 45 (skanda.8.21.45)

सूक्ष्मेभ्यश्चातिसूक्ष्माय सर्वेशाय महात्मने । नमस्ते भगवन् व्यक्त नमस्ते भगवन् शिव

sūkṣmebhyaścātisūkṣmāya sarveśāya mahātmane | namaste bhagavan vyakta namaste bhagavan śiva

To him more subtle than the subtlest, to the lord of all, the great-souled one; salutation to you, O Blessed manifest one, salutation to you, O Blessed Shiva.

Verse 46 (skanda.8.21.46)

नमस्ते सर्वलोकेश नमस्ते लोकभावन । न मे देवाधिपत्येन ब्रह्मत्वेनापि वा पुनः

namaste sarvalokeśa namaste lokabhāvana | na me devādhipatyena brahmatvenāpi vā punaḥ

Salutation to you, lord of all the worlds; salutation to you, creator of the worlds. I have no need of lordship over the gods, nor again of the state of Brahma —

Verse 47 (skanda.8.21.47)

न विष्णुत्वेन देवेश न इन्द्रत्वेन भूतप । इच्छाम्यहं तवेशान गणत्वं नित्यमव्ययम्

na viṣṇutvena deveśa na indratvena bhūtapa | icchāmyahaṁ taveśāna gaṇatvaṁ nityamavyayam

'— nor, O lord of gods, of the state of Vishnu, nor of Indra, O lord of beings. I desire, O Ishana, eternal and imperishable membership among your ganas.'

Verse 48 (skanda.8.21.48)

नित्यं त्वां सगणं साम्बं प्रसन्नं सपरिच्छदम् । द्रष्टुमिच्छामि देवेश एष मे दीयतां वरः

nityaṁ tvāṁ sagaṇaṁ sāmbaṁ prasannaṁ saparicchadam | draṣṭumicchāmi deveśa eṣa me dīyatāṁ varaḥ

'I wish always to behold you, together with your ganas, with Ambika, gracious, and with your retinue, O lord of gods; may this boon be granted to me.'

Verse 49 (skanda.8.21.49)

दत्त्वा गतिं पुरा देव त्वं वैरावर्तनं पुनः । शरणं त्वञ्च मे नाथ नान्यं पश्यामि कर्हिचित्

dattvā gatiṁ purā deva tvaṁ vairāvartanaṁ punaḥ | śaraṇaṁ tvañca me nātha nānyaṁ paśyāmi karhicit

'Having formerly granted me a destiny, O god, and now again a turning-away of enmity (uncertain in the source) — you alone are my refuge, O lord; I see no other, ever.'

Verse 50 (skanda.8.21.50)

त्वया त्यक्तस्य चैवाशु विनाशो नात्र संशयः । अन्यां गतिं न पश्यामि योस्यान्यं तेन्तकं शुभम्

tvayā tyaktasya caivāśu vināśo nātra saṁśayaḥ | anyāṁ gatiṁ na paśyāmi yosyānyaṁ tentakaṁ śubham

'For one abandoned by you, swift destruction is certain — there is no doubt of this. I see no other destiny; who else, O auspicious one, is there for me but you, the ender of all?'

Verse 51 (skanda.8.21.51)

अनुरक्तं च भक्तं च त्वत्परं त्वदुपाश्रयम् । प्रतीच्छ मां सदा देव एष मे दीयतां वरः

anuraktaṁ ca bhaktaṁ ca tvatparaṁ tvadupāśrayam | pratīccha māṁ sadā deva eṣa me dīyatāṁ varaḥ

'Accept me, devoted and loving, intent upon you, taking refuge in you alone, O god, forever; may this boon be granted to me.'

Verse 52 (skanda.8.21.52)

सनत्कुमार उवाच। य इदं प्रातरुत्थाय पठेदविमना नरः । स देहभेदमासाद्य नन्दीश्वरसमो भवेत्

sanatkumāra uvāca| ya idaṁ prātarutthāya paṭhedavimanā naraḥ | sa dehabhedamāsādya nandīśvarasamo bhavet

Sanatkumara said: Whatever man, rising in the morning, recites this with an undistracted mind, becomes, upon the dissolution of the body, equal to Nandishvara.

Verse 53 (skanda.8.21.53)

यश्चेमं शृणुयान्नित्यं श्रावयेद्वा द्विजातिषु । सोऽश्वमेधफलं प्राप्य रुद्रलोके महीयते

yaścemaṁ śṛṇuyānnityaṁ śrāvayedvā dvijātiṣu | so'śvamedhaphalaṁ prāpya rudraloke mahīyate

Whoever always hears this, or causes it to be heard among the twice-born, obtains the fruit of the horse-sacrifice and is exalted in the world of Rudra.

Verse 54 (skanda.8.21.54)

श्रुत्वा सकृदपि ह्येतं स्तवं पापप्रणाशनम् । यत्र तत्र मृतो व्यास न दुर्गतिमवाप्नुयात्

śrutvā sakṛdapi hyetaṁ stavaṁ pāpapraṇāśanam | yatra tatra mṛto vyāsa na durgatimavāpnuyāt

Having heard, even once, this sin-destroying hymn, O Vyasa, wherever a man dies, he does not attain an evil state.

Verse 55 (skanda.8.21.55)

योधीत्य नित्यं स्तवमेतमग्र्यं देवं सदाभ्यर्चयते यतात्मा । किं तस्य यज्ञैर्विविधैश्च दानैस्तीर्थैः सुतप्तैश्च तथा तपोभिः

yodhītya nityaṁ stavametamagryaṁ devaṁ sadābhyarcayate yatātmā | kiṁ tasya yajñairvividhaiśca dānaistīrthaiḥ sutaptaiśca tathā tapobhiḥ

He who, having always studied this foremost hymn, ever worships the god with a controlled self — what need has he of various sacrifices, gifts, sacred fords, or of austerities well performed?
