The Entry into Amaravati

Verse 1 (skanda.8.61.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथ दानवमुख्यानां लोकनाशाय निर्ययौ । मत्तवारणसम्बाधं रथाश्ववलितं बलम्

sanatkumāra uvāca | atha dānavamukhyānāṁ lokanāśāya niryayau | mattavāraṇasambādhaṁ rathāśvavalitaṁ balam

Sanatkumara said: Then, for the destruction of the world, the army of the chief demons marched out, crowded with rutting elephants and thronged with chariots and horses.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.61.2)

तत्तदा दानवानीकं विससार दिशो दिशः । प्रलये मारुतोद्धूतमौदन्वतमिवोदकम्

tattadā dānavānīkaṁ visasāra diśo diśaḥ | pralaye mārutoddhūtamaudanvatamivodakam

That demon-army then spread out in every direction, like the waters of the ocean stirred up by the wind at the time of universal dissolution.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.61.3)

निजघ्नुर्ब्राह्मणान् केचित् केचिन्निष्पिपिषुर्विशः । तुस्तुभुः क्षत्रियानन्ये शूद्रानन्ये बभक्षिरे

nijaghnurbrāhmaṇān kecit kecinniṣpipiṣurviśaḥ | tustubhuḥ kṣatriyānanye śūdrānanye babhakṣire

Some of them slew brahmins, some crushed vaishyas underfoot, others struck down kshatriyas, and others devoured shudras.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.61.4)

जग्लसुर्ल्लिलिहुर्न्नेदुर्बभञ्जुश्च समन्ततः । यज्ञेष्वन्नं हविर्नादान् यूपाँश्चामरविद्विषः

jaglasurllilihurnnedurbabhañjuśca samantataḥ | yajñeṣvannaṁ havirnādān yūpā~ścāmaravidviṣaḥ

Those foes of the immortals swallowed and licked up the sacrificial food and oblations at the sacrifices on every side, roared aloud, and broke the sacrificial posts.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.61.5)

स्वधीतवेदाध्ययनाभिनादितान् मुनिप्रवेकाचितगुल्मपादपान् । प्रभूतचीराजिनदर्भसंचयान् निकामपर्यन्तहिमाम्बुनिर्झरान्

svadhītavedādhyayanābhināditān munipravekācitagulmapādapān | prabhūtacīrājinadarbhasaṁcayān nikāmaparyantahimāmbunirjharān

Hermitages that rang with the chanting of Vedic study, thronged with the finest sages amid their thickets and trees, filled with heaps of bark-garments, deerskins and kusha-grass, and bordered all about with cool waterfalls,

Verse 6 (skanda.8.61.6)

उपान्तनीवारगवेधुकाचितान् प्रसुप्तविश्वस्तमृगर्क्षवानरान् । हबिर्भुजो धूमवितानसंकुलान् विसृत्य चान्ये प्रविजघ्नुराश्रमान्

upāntanīvāragavedhukācitān prasuptaviśvastamṛgarkṣavānarān | habirbhujo dhūmavitānasaṁkulān visṛtya cānye pravijaghnurāśramān

hermitages thick with wild rice and gavedhuka grass at their edges, where deer, bears and monkeys slept trustingly, and which were filled with the smoke of fire-oblations - these other demons scattered and destroyed.

Verse 7 (skanda.8.61.7)

केचिन्मुनीनामसुरा जीर्णोरगसमत्विषः । जटाः संगृह्य लुलुचुः क्षालितास्तीर्थवारिणा

kecinmunīnāmasurā jīrṇoragasamatviṣaḥ | jaṭāḥ saṁgṛhya lulucuḥ kṣālitāstīrthavāriṇā

Some Asuras, their bodies gleaming like a sloughed-off serpent's skin, seized the sages' matted locks - washed clean in the waters of sacred fords - and tore them out.

Verse 8 (skanda.8.61.8)

पातयित्वासुराः केचिच्चरणैः पिपिषुः क्षितौ । ऋषीनात्मविनाशाय हुताशान् ज्वलितानिव

pātayitvāsurāḥ keciccaraṇaiḥ pipiṣuḥ kṣitau | ṛṣīnātmavināśāya hutāśān jvalitāniva

Some Asuras threw the seers down and trampled them underfoot, as though they were blazing fires kindled for their own destruction.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.61.9)

शिरांसि मुनिपत्नीनां करैः केचित् तलैस्तथा । पूतानि वारिभिः पुण्यैः पस्पृशुर्दानवाधमाः

śirāṁsi munipatnīnāṁ karaiḥ kecit talaistathā | pūtāni vāribhiḥ puṇyaiḥ paspṛśurdānavādhamāḥ

The vilest of the demons struck with their hands and with slaps the heads of the sages' wives, heads that had been purified by sacred waters.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.61.10)

अथ ते जगृहुर्यात्रां ज्ञात्वाभ्युदयमात्मनः । विक्षिप्तं लोकनाशाय बलमाहूय सर्वशः

atha te jagṛhuryātrāṁ jñātvābhyudayamātmanaḥ | vikṣiptaṁ lokanāśāya balamāhūya sarvaśaḥ

Then, knowing that their fortune was rising, they undertook the expedition, summoning from every quarter the scattered army that had been sent out to destroy the world.

Verse 11 (skanda.8.61.11)

प्रशस्तेहनि नक्षत्रे मुहूर्त्ते च जयान्विते । सन्नाहभेरीराहत्य क्रियाश्चक्रुर्जयावहाः

praśastehani nakṣatre muhūrtte ca jayānvite | sannāhabherīrāhatya kriyāścakrurjayāvahāḥ

On an auspicious day, under a favourable constellation and at a victorious hour, they struck the war-drums and performed the rites that bring victory.

Verse 12 (skanda.8.61.12)

सन्नाह्यान् बलिनो सत्तानानाय्य वरवारणान् । सम्यगभ्यर्च्य वर्माणि बबन्धुर्विधिनासुराः

sannāhyān balino sattānānāyya varavāraṇān | samyagabhyarcya varmāṇi babandhurvidhināsurāḥ

The mighty demons brought forward excellent elephants, duly worshipped their armour according to prescribed rite, and bound it on.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.61.13)

यन्त्राणि धौतैर्नाराचैः पूर्णान्यासनपार्श्वयोः । बबन्धुः शक्तिपूर्णाँश्च वेणून् तिर्यगवस्थितान्

yantrāṇi dhautairnārācaiḥ pūrṇānyāsanapārśvayoḥ | babandhuḥ śaktipūrṇā~śca veṇūn tiryagavasthitān

They fastened engines filled with polished iron arrows on both sides of the howdahs, together with quivers full of spears and bamboo poles set crosswise.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.61.14)

तोमरान् कणपान् शंकून् शूलचक्रपरश्वधान् । आबबन्धुर्नियुक्ताश्च मध्यमासनपार्श्वयोः

tomarān kaṇapān śaṁkūn śūlacakraparaśvadhān | ābabandhurniyuktāśca madhyamāsanapārśvayoḥ

The appointed soldiers bound javelins, spikes, stakes, tridents, discuses and axes on both sides of the middle howdah.

Verse 15 (skanda.8.61.15)

सज्जानि परमास्त्राणि बालधीँश्च सुसंस्कृतान् । संपूर्णान् गन्धवासोभिर्निशिताग्रैः शिलीमुखैः

sajjāni paramāstrāṇi bāladhī~śca susaṁskṛtān | saṁpūrṇān gandhavāsobhirniśitāgraiḥ śilīmukhaiḥ

They readied their finest weapons and the well-groomed tail-tufts of the elephants, and filled their quivers with fragrant, sharp-tipped arrows.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.61.16)

सन्नाह्यानकुशाँल्लौहान् बालेन्दुसदृशद्युतीन् । ग्रैवेयेषु सिताँश्चक्रुर्मध्ये मस्तकपिण्डयोः

sannāhyānakuśā~llauhān bālendusadṛśadyutīn | graiveyeṣu sitā~ścakrurmadhye mastakapiṇḍayoḥ

They fastened white iron goads, gleaming like the crescent moon, onto the neck-chains of the elephants, between the two halves of the forehead.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.61.17)

क्षुरप्रमालां संयस्तां शातकुम्भमयीं शुभाम् । आबबन्धुश्च कुम्भेषु गजानां गजसादिनः

kṣurapramālāṁ saṁyastāṁ śātakumbhamayīṁ śubhām | ābabandhuśca kumbheṣu gajānāṁ gajasādinaḥ

The elephant-riders bound onto the frontal globes of the elephants a beautiful garland of razor-edged blades, wrought in gold.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.61.18)

वैजयन्तीपताकाश्च विचित्राः स्वभिलक्षिताः । उच्छ्रयामासुरायत्ता दन्त्यनीकस्य दानवाः

vaijayantīpatākāśca vicitrāḥ svabhilakṣitāḥ | ucchrayāmāsurāyattā dantyanīkasya dānavāḥ

The demons in charge of the elephant-corps hoisted aloft their bright victory-banners, each marked by its own distinguishing sign.

Verse 19 (skanda.8.61.19)

घण्टा वारणमुख्यानामाससज्जु र्महास्वनाः । चामराणि सुदीर्घाणि हंसांशुरुचिराणि च

ghaṇṭā vāraṇamukhyānāmāsasajju rmahāsvanāḥ | cāmarāṇi sudīrghāṇi haṁsāṁśurucirāṇi ca

Loud-sounding bells were fastened on the great elephants, along with long fly-whisks radiant as swan-white light.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.61.20)

एकैकस्य चतस्रश्च करेण्वश्चारुदर्शनाः । स्थापिताः पुरतो दैत्यैः परवारणवारणाः

ekaikasya catasraśca kareṇvaścārudarśanāḥ | sthāpitāḥ purato daityaiḥ paravāraṇavāraṇāḥ

In front of each great elephant the demons stationed four beautiful female elephants, to fend off the elephants of the enemy.

Verse 21 (skanda.8.61.21)

यूनो युवभिरारूढान् शिक्षितानस्त्रकोविदैः । चक्रुरग्रेसरानश्वान् वर्मिणो लोहजालिनः

yūno yuvabhirārūḍhān śikṣitānastrakovidaiḥ | cakruragresarānaśvān varmiṇo lohajālinaḥ

They placed at the head of the army trained horses, netted in iron, mounted by young riders skilled in the use of weapons.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.61.22)

वर्मिणो बद्धकवचाञ्छितनिस्त्रिंशधारिणः । तेषां पुरस्सरान् पत्तीननुयाताँश्च धन्विभिः

varmiṇo baddhakavacāñchitanistriṁśadhāriṇaḥ | teṣāṁ purassarān pattīnanuyātā~śca dhanvibhiḥ

Armoured foot-soldiers, their mail fastened tight and sharp swords in hand, marched ahead of them, followed by bowmen.

Verse 23 (skanda.8.61.23)

दैत्ययोधास्ततश्चान्ये वर्मिणो लोहजालिनः । आरूढा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशाः स्नातपीताँस्तुरङ्गःमान्

daityayodhāstataścānye varmiṇo lohajālinaḥ | ārūḍhā baddhanistriṁśāḥ snātapītā~sturaṅgaḥmān

Then other demon-warriors, armoured and netted in iron, swords bound at their sides, mounted horses that had been bathed and fed.

Verse 24 (skanda.8.61.24)

केचिद्विनीतैर्युवभिः स्नपितैः कृतमङ्गलैः । रथान् संयोजयामासुरश्वैरग्रजवैस्तदा

kecidvinītairyuvabhiḥ snapitaiḥ kṛtamaṅgalaiḥ | rathān saṁyojayāmāsuraśvairagrajavaistadā

Some yoked their chariots to swift, foremost horses that had been well-trained, bathed and made auspicious by young charioteers.

Verse 25 (skanda.8.61.25)

आयुधान् सपताकाँश्च किंकिणीजालनादितान् । अधितस्थुस्तदा केचिद् रथान् हाटकसंस्कृतान्

āyudhān sapatākā~śca kiṁkiṇījālanāditān | adhitasthustadā kecid rathān hāṭakasaṁskṛtān

Some then mounted golden chariots fitted with weapons and banners, ringing with nets of tiny bells.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.61.26)

एवं तत् कल्पितं श्रुत्वा सैन्यं सैन्यनमस्कृतः । सुन्दो दानवशार्दूलो निर्ययौ कृतमङ्गलः

evaṁ tat kalpitaṁ śrutvā sainyaṁ sainyanamaskṛtaḥ | sundo dānavaśārdūlo niryayau kṛtamaṅgalaḥ

Hearing that the army had thus been arrayed, Sunda, foremost of the demons, honoured by the army, having performed auspicious rites, set forth.

Verse 27 (skanda.8.61.27)

स्वीषं सुकूबरं स्वक्षं शातकुम्भमयं वरम् । नानामणिमयैश्चित्रैर्भक्तिपुष्पमृगद्विजैः

svīṣaṁ sukūbaraṁ svakṣaṁ śātakumbhamayaṁ varam | nānāmaṇimayaiścitrairbhaktipuṣpamṛgadvijaiḥ

Onto his own excellent chariot - fine of axle and wheel, made of gold, set with many kinds of jewels, adorned with figures of flowers, deer and birds,

Verse 28 (skanda.8.61.28)

युक्तं परमसंहृष्टैर्मनोवेगैस्तुरङ्गमैः । आरुह्याथ रथं दिव्यं पताकाध्वजशोभितम्

yuktaṁ paramasaṁhṛṣṭairmanovegaisturaṅgamaiḥ | āruhyātha rathaṁ divyaṁ patākādhvajaśobhitam

and yoked to horses swift as thought and full of vigour - that divine chariot, splendid with banners and flags, he mounted.

Verse 29 (skanda.8.61.29)

कवची बद्धनिस्त्रिंशो विधूतसितचामरः । अभितः स्तूयमानश्च सूतमागधबन्दिभिः

kavacī baddhanistriṁśo vidhūtasitacāmaraḥ | abhitaḥ stūyamānaśca sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ

Clad in armour, sword bound at his side, white fly-whisks waving over him, praised on every side by bards, panegyrists and heralds,

Verse 30 (skanda.8.61.30)

निसुन्दोपि मदश्यामकपोलालीनषट्पदम् । आरुह्य निर्जगामाशु सांग्रामिकमनेकपम्

nisundopi madaśyāmakapolālīnaṣaṭpadam | āruhya nirjagāmāśu sāṁgrāmikamanekapam

Nisunda too mounted his battle-elephant, its temples dark with rut and swarmed by bees, and swiftly set out.

Verse 31 (skanda.8.61.31)

अन्ये च दानवास्तत्र रथैरश्वैर्मतङ्गजैः । निर्ययुः परमप्रीता युद्धशौण्डाः सुदंशिताः

anye ca dānavāstatra rathairaśvairmataṅgajaiḥ | niryayuḥ paramaprītā yuddhaśauṇḍāḥ sudaṁśitāḥ

And the other demons there, intoxicated with battle-lust and well-armoured, set out in great delight upon chariots, horses and elephants.

Verse 32 (skanda.8.61.32)

बलस्याग्रेसरं कृत्वा तारकाक्षं महासुरम् । सहितं बहुभिः शूरै रथनागाश्वपत्तिभिः

balasyāgresaraṁ kṛtvā tārakākṣaṁ mahāsuram | sahitaṁ bahubhiḥ śūrai rathanāgāśvapattibhiḥ

They placed the great Asura Tarakaksha, accompanied by many heroes with chariots, elephants, horses and infantry, at the head of the army.

Verse 33 (skanda.8.61.33)

पृष्ठतः संविधायाशु बलोन्मत्तं महासुरम् । बलेन चतुरङ्गेण महिषं पार्ष्णिरक्षिणम्

pṛṣṭhataḥ saṁvidhāyāśu balonmattaṁ mahāsuram | balena caturaṅgeṇa mahiṣaṁ pārṣṇirakṣiṇam

They swiftly stationed the mighty Asura Mahisha, crazed with strength and accompanied by a fourfold army, at the rear as its rearguard.

Verse 34 (skanda.8.61.34)

पार्श्वयोरुभयोर्न्यस्य मेघस्वनमहास्वनौ । सैन्येन महता दृप्तौ दानवावरिसूदनौ

pārśvayorubhayornyasya meghasvanamahāsvanau | sainyena mahatā dṛptau dānavāvarisūdanau

On both flanks they placed the demons named Meghasvana and Mahasvana - proud, destroyers of foes, their roar deep as thunderclouds - together with a great host.

Verse 35 (skanda.8.61.35)

मध्ये सुन्दो निसुन्दश्च मयः शम्भुः खरो मुरः । सन्नद्धा बलिनः शूरा परसैन्यविदारणाः

madhye sundo nisundaśca mayaḥ śambhuḥ kharo muraḥ | sannaddhā balinaḥ śūrā parasainyavidāraṇāḥ

In the middle marched Sunda and Nisunda, and Maya, Shambhu, Khara and Mura - mighty, heroic, armoured demons, destroyers of the enemy host.

Verse 36 (skanda.8.61.36)

प्रतस्थिरे सुसंयत्ता दिवं दानवसत्तमाः । प्रलये मारुतोद्धूता घनाः संवर्त्तका इव

pratasthire susaṁyattā divaṁ dānavasattamāḥ | pralaye mārutoddhūtā ghanāḥ saṁvarttakā iva

Thus fully arrayed, the foremost demons set out for heaven, like the storm-clouds of universal dissolution driven onward by the wind.

Verse 37 (skanda.8.61.37)

तेषामागमनं ज्ञात्वा सह स्वर्लोकवासिभिः । अपसृत्य जगामाशु जनस्थानं शतक्रतुः

teṣāmāgamanaṁ jñātvā saha svarlokavāsibhiḥ | apasṛtya jagāmāśu janasthānaṁ śatakratuḥ

Learning of their approach, Indra, together with the dwellers of heaven, withdrew and swiftly went to Janasthana.

Verse 38 (skanda.8.61.38)

मेरो शिखरमारुह्य सर्वेथ सहितास्तदा । सेना निवेशयामासुर्नन्दने ते सुरद्विषः

mero śikharamāruhya sarvetha sahitāstadā | senā niveśayāmāsurnandane te suradviṣaḥ

Meanwhile all those foes of the gods, having together ascended the peak of Meru, encamped their army in the Nandana grove.

Verse 39 (skanda.8.61.39)

अथ सैन्यस्य दैत्येन्द्रा रक्षामाधाय सर्वशः । प्रविभक्तानसंबाधानावासान् जगृहुस्ततः

atha sainyasya daityendrā rakṣāmādhāya sarvaśaḥ | pravibhaktānasaṁbādhānāvāsān jagṛhustataḥ

Then the demon-lords, having posted guards for the army on every side, took up quarters that were well apportioned and free from crowding.

Verse 40 (skanda.8.61.40)

दत्तानुज्ञास्ततः सर्वे दानवा दानवोत्तमैः । सन्नाह्यमपनिन्युस्ते सर्वोपकरणं तदा

dattānujñāstataḥ sarve dānavā dānavottamaiḥ | sannāhyamapaninyuste sarvopakaraṇaṁ tadā

Then, given leave by the foremost of the demons, all the demons removed their armour and all their equipment.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.61.41)

आरूढा गजकन्यासु वर्माणि मुमुचुः शनैः । आयुधान्यपनीयाशु सैनिका मत्तदन्तिनाम्

ārūḍhā gajakanyāsu varmāṇi mumucuḥ śanaiḥ | āyudhānyapanīyāśu sainikā mattadantinām

The riders of the rutting elephants, mounted upon female elephants, slowly took off their armour and quickly set aside their weapons.

Verse 42 (skanda.8.61.42)

सन्नाहानपनिन्युश्च मुमुचुः कवचानि च । तनुत्राणि च चित्राणि तदा दानवसैनिकाः

sannāhānapaninyuśca mumucuḥ kavacāni ca | tanutrāṇi ca citrāṇi tadā dānavasainikāḥ

The demon soldiers then removed their trappings, took off their armour, and also their colourful body-guards.

Verse 43 (skanda.8.61.43)

अपेत कक्षान् मातङ्गान् स्नातपीतान् गतक्लमान् । बबन्धुः कल्पवृक्षेषु केचिद्दानवसैनिकाः

apeta kakṣān mātaṅgān snātapītān gataklamān | babandhuḥ kalpavṛkṣeṣu keciddānavasainikāḥ

Some demon soldiers, having unsaddled their elephants - now bathed, watered, and rid of fatigue - tethered them to the wish-fulfilling trees.

Verse 44 (skanda.8.61.44)

केचित् कल्पद्रुमान्नागा मदसंलीनषटपदाः । बभंजुर्बलिनस्त्रस्तमत्तोद्भ्रान्तविहङ्गमान्

kecit kalpadrumānnāgā madasaṁlīnaṣaṭapadāḥ | babhaṁjurbalinastrastamattodbhrāntavihaṅgamān

Some mighty elephants, swarming bees clinging to them in their rut, broke the wish-fulfilling trees, scattering the startled, bewildered birds in flight.

Verse 45 (skanda.8.61.45)

चुक्रशुर्बलिनः केचिन्मदश्यामान् मतङ्गजाः । कपोलान् कल्पवृक्षेषु पुष्पालीनालिपंक्तिषु

cukraśurbalinaḥ kecinmadaśyāmān mataṅgajāḥ | kapolān kalpavṛkṣeṣu puṣpālīnālipaṁktiṣu

Some mighty elephants, their temples darkened with rut, rubbed their temples against the wish-fulfilling trees, which were thronged with rows of bees clinging to the flowers.

Verse 46 (skanda.8.61.46)

नागा जगाहिरे केचिन्मत्ता मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् । हैमवारिजकिञ्जल्कपिञ्जरोपान्तरोधसम्

nāgā jagāhire kecinmattā mandākinīṁ nadīm | haimavārijakiñjalkapiñjaropāntarodhasam

Some rutting elephants plunged into the river Mandakini, whose banks were tawny with the golden pollen of lotuses.

Verse 47 (skanda.8.61.47)

विमुक्तसाङ्ग्रामिकवर्मजालान् प्रसन्नचित्तान् परिघृष्टकायान् । निपीततोयानपनीतखेदान् बबन्धुरश्वान्पृथगश्वबन्धाः

vimuktasāṅgrāmikavarmajālān prasannacittān parighṛṣṭakāyān | nipītatoyānapanītakhedān babandhuraśvānpṛthagaśvabandhāḥ

The horse-keepers tethered the horses separately, now freed of their war-armour, contented, their bodies well rubbed down, their thirst quenched and fatigue removed.

Verse 48 (skanda.8.61.48)

अथ सूक्ष्माणि वासांसि चित्राश्च परमाःस्रजः । आनिन्युः कल्पवृक्षेभ्यः फलानि मधुराणि च

atha sūkṣmāṇi vāsāṁsi citrāśca paramāḥsrajaḥ | āninyuḥ kalpavṛkṣebhyaḥ phalāni madhurāṇi ca

Then they brought fine garments, wondrous excellent garlands, and sweet fruits from the wish-fulfilling trees.

Verse 49 (skanda.8.61.49)

हैमानि केचित् पद्मानि तद्रजोरुणमूर्त्तयः । बभञ्जुर्दानवा हृष्टा गता मन्दाकिनीं नदीम्

haimāni kecit padmāni tadrajoruṇamūrttayaḥ | babhañjurdānavā hṛṣṭā gatā mandākinīṁ nadīm

Some delighted demons went to the river Mandakini and plucked golden lotuses, their bodies reddened by the lotus-pollen.

Verse 50 (skanda.8.61.50)

आनिन्युः सैनिकाः केचिन्मन्दारकुसुमोत्करान् । फलान्याजह्रिरे केचित् स्वादूनि च बहूनि च

āninyuḥ sainikāḥ kecinmandārakusumotkarān | phalānyājahrire kecit svādūni ca bahūni ca

Some soldiers brought heaps of mandara flowers, while others gathered abundant sweet fruits.

Verse 51 (skanda.8.61.51)

तत्रोष्य रजनीमेकां भेरीराहत्य दानवाः । तेनैव विधिना यत्ताः प्रजग्मुरमरावतीम्

tatroṣya rajanīmekāṁ bherīrāhatya dānavāḥ | tenaiva vidhinā yattāḥ prajagmuramarāvatīm

Having spent a single night there, the demons struck the war-drums and, arrayed in that same manner, marched onward toward Amaravati.

Verse 52 (skanda.8.61.52)

ततस्तूर्यनिनादेन गजानां बृंहितेन च । सिंहनादैश्च दैत्यानां चचालेवामरावती

tatastūryaninādena gajānāṁ bṛṁhitena ca | siṁhanādaiśca daityānāṁ cacālevāmarāvatī

Then, with the blare of trumpets, the trumpeting of elephants, and the lion-roars of the demons, Amaravati itself seemed to tremble.

Verse 53 (skanda.8.61.53)

अथ शून्यां समुद्वीक्ष्य पुरीं दानवसत्तमाः । इत्थमूचुः सुसंहृष्टा नदन्तो भैरवस्वनम्

atha śūnyāṁ samudvīkṣya purīṁ dānavasattamāḥ | itthamūcuḥ susaṁhṛṣṭā nadanto bhairavasvanam

Then, beholding the city empty, the foremost demons, greatly delighted, roared out in terrible voices and spoke thus:

Verse 54 (skanda.8.61.54)

जयति विबुधशत्रुः सुन्ददैत्येन्द्रसिंहः । कठिनरुचिरबाहुः पीनविस्तीर्णवक्षाः । शतमखपुरजेता चारुपृथ्वायताक्षः । सजलघननिनादो मत्तनागेन्द्रगामी

jayati vibudhaśatruḥ sundadaityendrasiṁhaḥ | kaṭhinarucirabāhuḥ pīnavistīrṇavakṣāḥ | śatamakhapurajetā cārupṛthvāyatākṣaḥ | sajalaghananinādo mattanāgendragāmī

Victory to the enemy of the gods, Sunda, lion among the demon-lords, his arms firm and lovely, his chest broad and full, conqueror of Indra's city, his eyes wide and beautiful, his voice deep as a rain-laden cloud, and his gait like that of a rutting lord of elephants!

Verse 55 (skanda.8.61.55)

तदनु जयति चारुप्रान्तरक्तायताक्षो । मृगपतिगतिलीलः संयुगेष्वप्रधृष्यः । त्रिदशवरविजेता दानवेन्द्रो निसुन्दः । प्रहतमुरजनादः पीनदीर्घोरुबाहुः

tadanu jayati cāruprāntaraktāyatākṣo | mṛgapatigatilīlaḥ saṁyugeṣvapradhṛṣyaḥ | tridaśavaravijetā dānavendro nisundaḥ | prahatamurajanādaḥ pīnadīrghorubāhuḥ

And after him, victory to that lord of demons, Nisunda, his long eyes beautifully edged with red, moving with the playful gait of a lion, unassailable in battle, conqueror of the finest of the gods, his arms full, long and mighty, and his roar like the beat of the war-drum!
