The Battle of the Goddess

Chapter 64All chaptersChapter 66

Verse 1 (skanda.8.65.1)

sanatkumāra uvāca | atha tā devatāḥ kruddhā daityānagresarā~stadā | nijaghnurvividhaiḥ śastraiste ca tā vibhidu ryudhi

Sanatkumara said: Then those enraged goddesses struck down the foremost of the Daityas with various weapons, and they in turn wounded the goddesses in battle.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.65.2)

daityā nānāyudhopetā devīrjaghnu stadā raṇe | abalā balino vīrāḥ samaremaravidviṣaḥ

The Daityas, armed with various weapons - mighty warriors, enemies of the immortals - struck at the goddesses, thinking them merely weak women, in that battle.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.65.3)

turaṅgiṇasturaṅgasthāḥ padātīṁśca padātayaḥ | rathino rathasaṁsthāśca gajasthā gajasādinaḥ

Horsemen fought horsemen, foot-soldiers fought foot-soldiers, charioteers fought charioteers, and elephant-riders fought elephant-riders.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.65.4)

rathā nāgāsturaṅgāśca rathān nāgān turaṅgamān | padātīḥ sādinaḥ śūrāḥ sādinīśca padātayaḥ

Chariots struck at elephants and horses, elephants and horses struck at chariots; heroic riders struck at foot-soldiers, and foot-soldiers struck at riders.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.65.5)

devyopi yudhi saṁkruddhāḥ pattisādiratha dvipān | nirjaghnurdānavendrāṇāṁ prāsaśakti paraśvadhaiḥ

The goddesses too, enraged in battle, struck down with spears, javelins and axes the foot-soldiers, riders, chariots and elephants of the demon-lords.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.65.6)

pādaiśca pipiṣuḥ śūrānnipātya bhuvi dānavān | vibhidurmuṣṭibhiḥ kāścicchirāṁsi suravidviṣām

They threw down heroic demons to the ground and trampled them with their feet; some of the goddesses shattered the heads of the enemies of the gods with their bare fists.

Verse 7 (skanda.8.65.7)

vidāryoraḥsthalaṁ kāścit samare darpaśālinām | papuśca rudhiraṁ devyaḥ prāṇaissaha suradviṣām

Some, tearing open the chests of the proud demons in battle, drank their blood together with their very life-breaths.

Verse 8 (skanda.8.65.8)

chinnā~śca khaṇḍaśaḥ kecid hetīnutthāya vegitāḥ | nirjaghnu rdevatāḥ kruddhā muṣṭibhirvajrasaṁhataiḥ

Some demons, their weapons snatched away and hacked to pieces, swiftly rose again; but the enraged goddesses struck them down with fists hard as thunderbolts.

Verse 9 (skanda.8.65.9)

kecinmadāmbuniṣyandaśyāmagaṇḍasthalā gajāḥ | pipiṣuḥ paramakruddhāḥ samare devatārathān

Some elephants, their temples dark with streaming rut-fluid, utterly enraged, crushed the chariots of the goddesses in that battle.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.65.10)

kapolabhittisaṁlīnamattaṣaṭpadapaṁktayaḥ | hatārohā gajāḥ kecinnirjaghnurdaityadevatāḥ

Some elephants, rows of intoxicated bees clinging to the walls of their temples, their riders slain, still struck down both demons and goddesses.

Verse 11 (skanda.8.65.11)

varmiṇaḥ kecidudbhrāntaśitanistriṁśapāṇayaḥ | cicchidurdevatānīkaṁ devatā dānavānapi

Some armoured warriors, swords whirling sharply in their hands, cut through the host of goddesses - and the goddesses cut down the demons in turn.

Verse 12 (skanda.8.65.12)

mattāḥ praticchannamukhā~śca kecid gandhena vijñāya gajān gajendrāḥ | ghrātvā tu gandhaṁ sahasābhijaghnurādhoraṇairapyabhisaṁgṛhītāḥ 5

Some rutting lord-elephants, recognising by scent the enemy elephants whose faces were disguised, suddenly attacked them the moment they caught the smell, even though restrained by their mahouts.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.65.13)

visphāryamāṇāni mahādhanūṁṣi mahābalairdānakyodhamukhyaiḥ | tāraṁ viresuḥ samarājireṣu krauñcā iva vyomni śaranniśāsu

Great bows, drawn taut by the mighty foremost warriors of the demons, twanged loudly on the battlefield, like curlews crying in the sky on autumn nights.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.65.14)

tūryasvanairjyātalasannipātairnāgāśvanādai rathanemighoṣaiḥ | saṁpūrṇakuñjodara kandarosau vindhyaścacāleva tadā samagraḥ

With the blare of trumpets, the slap of bowstring on palm, the trumpeting of elephants, the neighing of horses, and the rumble of chariot-wheels, the whole of Vindhya, its groves and caverns filled with sound, seemed to shake.

Verse 15 (skanda.8.65.15)

devyaḥ samutsārya raṇe ripūṇāmuccairvineduḥ prasabhaṁ balāni | neduśca nādān parihṛṣṭacittāḥ protsārya devīryudhi daityayodhāḥ

The goddesses, forcefully driving back the enemy's forces in battle, roared aloud; and the demon-warriors too, greatly delighted, roared out as they drove the goddesses back in turn.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.65.16)

balāni kiñcitkṣatajokṣitāni pracakrire tatra gatāgatāni | mahāvanānīva samīraṇena samīritānyudgatapallavāni

The armies, drenched a little with blood, surged back and forth there, like great forests, their fresh shoots stirred, swayed by the wind.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.65.17)

chinnāni vaktrāṇi purassarāṇāṁ vicitrahaimābharaṇojjvalāni | devībhirājau patitāni rejurnikṛttanālāni yathāmbujāni

The severed heads of the front-rank warriors, ablaze with colourful golden ornaments, fell in battle at the goddesses' hands, and lay there like lotuses cut from their stalks.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.65.18)

pratyāhatā vidrutabhītanāgā sā devatābhirnihatāśvayodhā | daityendrasiṁhaiḥ pratisannivṛttairdolāyamāneva camūrbabhūva

Driven back, its elephants fleeing in fear, its horses and warriors slain by the goddesses, and rallied again by the lion-like demon-lords, the army swayed to and fro like a swing.

Verse 19 (skanda.8.65.19)

hatā nipetuḥ samare nadanto devadviṣāmañjanaśailakalpāḥ | devobhirābaddhavicitraghaṇṭā marmātigairvāṇavarairgajendrāḥ

The lord-elephants of the enemies of the gods, dark as collyrium mountains, their bells brightly tied on, fell roaring in battle, slain by the goddesses' excellent arrows piercing to the vitals.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.65.20)

balāni teṣāmabhisṛtya vegādabhyāhatānyāśvapaserurājau | mahodadhiṁ prāpya vivṛddhikāle pratyāhatānīva sarijjalāni

Their forces, charged at with speed and struck back, retreated at once in that battle, like river-waters driven back on reaching the great ocean at high tide.

Verse 21 (skanda.8.65.21)

devyaśca daityāśca mahāsamāje virejirenyonyavisaktavāṇāḥ | saṁsaktabhāsopagame ghanānāmabhre samūhā iva tārakāṇām

The goddesses and the Daityas, their arrows locked together in that great gathering, shone forth like clusters of stars amid gathering clouds whose light intermingles.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.65.22)

udghuṣya nāmānyatha dānavendrā nirjagmurāśu svabalādrathasthāḥ | kruddhāḥ suyattā rathināṁ variṣṭhā visphārya citrāṇi śarāsanāni

Then, calling out their names aloud, the demon-lords, mounted on chariots, the finest of charioteers, angrily and fully prepared, swiftly rode out from their army, drawing their splendid bows.

Verse 23 (skanda.8.65.23)

devyopi saṁyattatarā rathasthāḥ kruddhā javenātha tadābhisasruḥ | meghasvanaṁ pratyudiyāya ṣaṣṭhī kārtasvaraṁ mṛtyurudīrṇakopā

The goddesses too, still more fully prepared, mounted on chariots, enraged, then swiftly advanced. Shashthi went out to meet Meghasvana; the greatly-angered Mrityu went to meet Kartasvara.

Verse 24 (skanda.8.65.24)

drumeṇa lakṣmīratha saṁyugasthā mayena kāntiḥ saramā mureṇa | ghanena caṇḍā niyatiḥ khareṇa prabhāvatī dhundhumayāt saroṣā

Lakshmi took the field against Druma; Kanti against Maya; Sarama against Mura; Chanda against Ghana; Niyati against Khara; and Prabhavati, full of fury, against Dhundhu.

Verse 25 (skanda.8.65.25)

daityā yuyutsotsukamānasāste devīḥ samāyāssabhujaissaśastraiḥ | abhyāyayuḥ śīghramamṛṣyamāṇāḥ khyātāvalepāḥ svarathaissuyattāḥ

Those Daityas, their minds eager for battle, arms and weapons raised, unable to bear the goddesses' approach, famed for their pride, swiftly advanced on their well-prepared chariots.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.65.26)

jyotiḥprakāśāntapanīyapuṁkhānākarṇapūrṇāyatacāpamuktān | saṁpreṣayāmāsuradīnasatvā bāṇapravekānyudhi devatānām

Undaunted in spirit, they released at the goddesses excellent arrows with golden nocks bright as stars, shot from bows drawn full to the ear.

Verse 27 (skanda.8.65.27)

devyotha teṣāṁ niśitānsupuṁkhānmarmacchido dūragamānsupatrān | āgacchatāṁ dānavayūthapānāṁ bāṇānanantānsasṛjustathaiva

Then the goddesses likewise released countless sharp, well-feathered, marrow-cutting, far-reaching arrows at those advancing demon-chiefs.

Verse 28 (skanda.8.65.28)

te bāṇamukhyā vividhā virejuranyonyamuktā vyatiṣajyamānāḥ | te pūrṇamāsyāṁ vighane dinānte bhāsaḥ samūḍhā iva cāndrasaurāḥ

Those excellent arrows, of various kinds, loosed by both sides, colliding with one another, shone forth like the mingled rays of moon and sun at day's end on a cloudless full-moon night.

Verse 29 (skanda.8.65.29)

chinnā nipeturyudhi devatābhirbhujāḥ saśastrā ditijādhipānām | nirastabhogā nibiḍā bṛhanto nigīrṇajihvā iva pannagendrāḥ

The weapon-bearing arms of the demon-lords, severed by the goddesses, fell in battle, thick and mighty, like great serpent-lords whose hoods have been struck down, their tongues swallowed.

Verse 30 (skanda.8.65.30)

meghasvanasyātha raṇe tadānīṁ kruddhā śaraughānvisasarja ṣaṣṭhī | āgacchatastānabhitaḥ pṛṣatkaiściccheda daityaḥ śataśontarikṣe

Then, enraged, Shashthi released a flood of arrows at Meghasvana in battle; the demon, in turn, cut those arrows to pieces in the sky by the hundred with his own shafts as they approached.

Verse 31 (skanda.8.65.31)

bāṇānathodvīkṣya tadā nikṛttān laghīyasonyānvisasarja tūrṇam | daityopi tānāpatataḥ pṛṣatkānvrātaiḥ śarāṇāṁ bahuśaścakartta

Seeing her arrows thus cut down, she swiftly loosed other, lighter ones; the demon too cut those incoming shafts to pieces many times over with volleys of his own arrows.

Verse 32 (skanda.8.65.32)

nikṛtya bāṇānditijaḥ punastān cikṣepa ṣaṣṭhyā daśa rukmapuṁkhān | tānāśu ṣaṣṭhī prativārya daityaṁ vivyādha ṣaṣṭhyā tapanīyapuṁkhaiḥ

Having cut down her arrows, that son of Diti then hurled ten gold-nocked arrows at Shashthi; but Shashthi swiftly warded them off, and pierced the demon with six golden-nocked shafts.

Verse 33 (skanda.8.65.33)

sa tairvibhinno rudhirāktamūrtiḥ pravihvalaḥ ca kiṁcidavāg babhūva | apākarottaṁ samarāt svasūto rathena jāmbūnadacitritena

Wounded by them, his body drenched in blood, he grew faint and briefly speechless; his own charioteer then bore him away from the battle in a chariot inlaid with gold.

Verse 34 (skanda.8.65.34)

kārtasvanaḥ kāñcanacitrapuṁkhān sasarja devyāḥ samare pṛṣatkān | ciccheda tān mṛtyurudārapuṁkhairanāgatā neva śarāñcharaughaiḥ

Kartasvana loosed at the goddess in battle arrows with golden, ornate nocks; Mrityu cut them down with her own great-plumed shafts, even before they could arrive, with volleys of arrows.

Verse 35 (skanda.8.65.35)

chittvā śarā~stasya śarairvicitrairvivyādha taṁ vakṣasi pañcaṣaṣṭhyā | bhinnaḥ sa tairāśu tathā vireje vyomnyarkapādairiva vārivāhaḥ

Having cut down his arrows with her own many-hued shafts, she pierced him in the chest with sixty-five arrows; wounded by them, he then shone forth like a raincloud struck by the sun's rays in the sky.

Verse 36 (skanda.8.65.36)

aśvāṁśca tasyāśu jaghāna mṛtyuḥ pṛthak pṛṣatkai stapanīyapuṁkhaiḥ | āplutya daityotha rathāddhatāśvātpragṛhya carmāsivarañca dhautam

Mrityu swiftly slew his horses too, each with a separate golden-nocked shaft; then the demon, leaping down from his chariot whose horses were slain, seized his shield and a polished excellent sword,

Verse 37 (skanda.8.65.37)

kruddho nitāntāyataraktanetro vegena devīmabhitaḥ sasāra | taccarma tasyāpatataḥ śaraughaiścakartta mṛtyuḥ śataśaśśitāgraiḥ

and, enraged, his eyes utterly wide and red, rushed swiftly straight at the goddess; but Mrityu, as he approached, cut his shield to pieces, by the hundred, with a shower of sharp-pointed arrows.

Verse 38 (skanda.8.65.38)

sa kṛttacarmāvaraṇo surendro nistriṁśamudyamya niśātadhāram | abhyadravanmṛtyumabhūttadānīṁ khe rohiṇīṁ megha ivābhividyut

His shield now cut away, that lord of demons, raising a sharp-edged sword, charged at Mrityu, and appeared then like a lightning-lit cloud rushing at the star Rohini in the sky.

Verse 39 (skanda.8.65.39)

tamāpatantaṁ yudhi kālakalpaṁ mṛtyuḥ śarairugrabhujaṅgakalpaiḥ | jaghāna marmasvabhilakṣiteṣu vyayojayaccāsubhirenamāśu

As he charged, terrible as Death itself, Mrityu struck him in battle with arrows fierce as serpents, aimed at his vital points, and swiftly parted him from his life.

Verse 40 (skanda.8.65.40)

lakṣmīrdrumaṁ bāṇavarairajayyā samākiradvāraṇarājalīlam | karṇāntamuktai rniśitairajihmai raṇājire cārusuvarṇapuṁkhaiḥ

Unconquerable Lakshmi covered Druma, who moved with the grace of a lord of elephants, with excellent arrows on the battlefield - sharp, straight-flying, released full to the ear, their nocks of fine gold.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.65.41)

ajihmagāste vividhāḥ supatritā drumasya gātreṣu nipeturāhave | sa tairvicitraiḥ śuśubhe viṣaktairmahādrumaḥ pakṣigaṇarivāśritaiḥ

Those various straight-flying, well-feathered arrows fell upon Druma's limbs in that combat; and he, studded with them, shone like a great tree perched with flocks of colourful birds.

Verse 42 (skanda.8.65.42)

lakṣmīṁ tataḥ kiṁpuruṣādhiposau vivyādha bāṇairdaśabhiḥ supuṁkhaiḥ | vaktre sa pūrṇendusamānavakttrāṁ bāhvoḥ pṛthak cāṣṭaśatena dhīraḥ

Then that lord of Kimpurushas pierced Lakshmi, whose face was like the full moon, with ten well-feathered arrows in the face, and, steadfast, with eight hundred more, separately, in her two arms.

Verse 43 (skanda.8.65.43)

acintayantīṣu varānvarāsyā mukhesya tīkṣṇānnicakhāna bāṇān | anyānasakhyā~śca pṛthak śarīre supatritān hāṭakamṛṣṭapuṁkhān

Fair-faced Lakshmi, disregarding those excellent arrows, planted sharp arrows into his face, and countless other well-feathered, gold-polished-nocked shafts, separately, all over his body.

Verse 44 (skanda.8.65.44)

lakṣmyāstato daityapatiḥ śitena bhallena ciccheda rathe dhvajāgram | aśvāṁśca tasyāścaturaścaturbhiḥ sūtaṁ ca vivyādha śareṇa tūrṇam

Then the demon-lord cut off the top of Lakshmi's banner on her chariot with a sharp crescent-arrow, struck her four horses each with four arrows, and swiftly pierced her charioteer with one shaft.

Verse 45 (skanda.8.65.45)

nārācamādāya tatosya lakṣmīrjaghāna sūtaṁ yudhi devaśatroḥ | vivyādha vāhā~śca pṛthakpṛṣatkaidhvajañca ciccheda rathasya tūrṇam

Then, taking an iron shaft, Lakshmi slew the charioteer of that enemy of the gods in battle, pierced his horses each with separate arrows, and swiftly cut down the banner of his chariot.

Verse 46 (skanda.8.65.46)

yantrā vinā tasya rathaṁ tadānīṁ te sāyakairapratimaiḥ prataptāḥ | saṁgrāmabhūmerapaninyuraśvāḥ prāṇāniva svān parirakṣamāṇāḥ

His chariot then left without control, and his horses, tormented by those matchless arrows, bore it away from the battlefield, as if guarding their own lives.

Verse 47 (skanda.8.65.47)

kāntirmayaṁ bāṇaśatairavākiranmayaśca kāntiṁ niśitaiḥ śaraughaiḥ | nīhārapātairiva sāndhakāraṁ tadā tayorantaramāsa tatra

Kanti showered Maya with hundreds of arrows, and Maya showered Kanti with sharp volleys of shafts; the space between them then became dim, as though with falling mist and darkness.

Verse 48 (skanda.8.65.48)

In taking up, nocking and drawing their arrows, in footwork, in the handling of reins, and in aim, the two of them each outdid the other, by their trained skill, in the midst of that battle.

Verse 49 (skanda.8.65.49)

kāntirmayāstānnicakarta bāṇānmayaśca kāntyā viśikhānvimṛṣṭān | chidraṁ samāsedaturapradhṛṣyau kiñcinna tau yatra parasparasya

Kanti cut down Maya's arrows, and Maya cut down Kanti's well-honed shafts in turn; those two, unassailable, found not the slightest opening in one another.

Verse 50 (skanda.8.65.50)

aśveṣu sūte sarathe dhvaje ca sarveṣu gātrāvayaveṣu cāsya | ajihmagān hāṭakamṛṣṭapuṁkhān mayasya kāntirnicakhāna bāṇān

Kanti planted straight-flying, gold-polished-nocked arrows into his horses, his charioteer, his chariot, his banner, and every part of Maya's body.

Verse 51 (skanda.8.65.51)

mayaśca kāntiṁ sarathā 7 sasūtāṁ sacārucitradhvajavājimukhyām | saṁchādayāmāsa śitaiḥ pṛṣatkairvanasthalīṁ megha ivāmbuvarṣaiḥ

And Maya covered Kanti, together with her chariot, charioteer, lovely banner and fine horses, with sharp shafts, as a cloud covers a forest with sheets of rain.

Verse 52 (skanda.8.65.52)

kruddhātha kāntiḥ samare mayasya nārācamukhyena supatritena | sūtaṁ jaghānāśu ripostadānīmaṣṭābhiraṣṭau turagā~śca bāṇaiḥ

Then Kanti, enraged, swiftly slew the enemy's charioteer in battle with an excellent, well-feathered iron shaft, and struck his eight horses with eight arrows.

Verse 53 (skanda.8.65.53)

hatāśvasūto viratho mayotha nistriṁśamādāya niśātadhāram | jñātvaiva kāntyā samare prabhāvaṁ vihāya yuddhaṁ viyadutpapāta

His horses and charioteer slain, chariot-less, Maya then took up a sharp-edged sword; but, sensing Kanti's power in battle, he abandoned the fight and leapt up into the sky.

Verse 54 (skanda.8.65.54)

vivyādha tīkṣṇaiḥ saramā raṇājire bāṇairmuraṁ dānavadaityayūthapam | daityopi bāṇaiḥ saramāmajihmagairabhyāhanad gṛdhramayūrapatribhiḥ

Sarama pierced Mura, chief of the demon and Daitya host, with sharp arrows on the battlefield; the demon in turn struck Sarama with straight-flying arrows feathered with vulture and peacock plumes.

Verse 55 (skanda.8.65.55)

kruddhātha devī niśitena tasya ciccheda bhallena dhanurvicitram | te vihvalāḥ śoṇitamudvamanto daityendrabāṇābhihatāsturaṅgāḥ | bhūmau nipetuḥ samare śvasantaḥ prāṇāñjahuścāśu samaṁ samastāḥ

Then the enraged goddess cut his splendid bow with a sharp crescent-arrow; and his horses, struck by the demon-lord's own earlier arrows, fell to the ground gasping and vomiting blood, and together, all at once, gave up their lives.

Verse 56 (skanda.8.65.56)

kruddhātha devī saramāsurasya nistriṁśamudyamya supītadhāram | utpatya khaṁ tasya tadā jaghāna yantāramaśvā~śca mahāpramāṇān

Then Sarama, enraged, raising a bright, golden-edged sword, leapt into the sky and slew that demon's charioteer and his enormous horses.

Verse 57 (skanda.8.65.57)

murotha vegena tadāntarikṣamutpatya kopānnihatāśvasūtaḥ | vivyādha devīṁ daśabhiḥsutīkṣṇaiḥ śarairurasyugrabhujaṅgakalpaiḥ

Then Mura, his horses and charioteer slain, leapt swiftly into the sky in fury, and pierced the goddess in the chest with ten very sharp arrows, fierce as serpents.

Verse 58 (skanda.8.65.58)

acintayitvā saramā śarā~stān dhanurviciccheda tadā murasya | sa kṛttadhanvā viyatīndraśatrurantardadhe saṁyugamāśu hitvā

Disregarding those arrows, Sarama then cut down Mura's bow; his bow severed, that enemy of Indra vanished in the sky, quickly abandoning the fight.

Verse 59 (skanda.8.65.59)

vivyādha caṇḍā ghanamāpatantaṁ śaraiḥ śitāgrairyudhi rukmapuṁkhaiḥ | viddhaḥ sa tairdaityapatirbabhāse karairivendorasitaḥ payodaḥ

Chanda pierced Ghana as he charged, with sharp-tipped, gold-nocked arrows in battle; wounded by them, that demon-lord shone like a dark raincloud touched by the moon's rays.

Verse 60 (skanda.8.65.60)

abhyadravattānavicintya vāṇā~ścaṇḍāṁ ghanaḥ sāyakajālavarṣī | āgacchatastasya śaraissupatrairvivyādha caṇḍā rathavājimukhyān

Disregarding those arrows, Ghana, raining down a net of shafts, charged at Chanda; and as he approached, Chanda pierced his chariot and fine horses with well-feathered arrows.

Verse 61 (skanda.8.65.61)

ciccheda daityopi samucchritāgraṁ dhvajaṁ turaṅgā~śca jaghāna devyāḥ | hitvā rathau tāvavatīrya bhūmau gṛhītacarmāsivarau prayattau

The demon in turn cut down the goddess's high-raised banner and slew her horses; then, abandoning their chariots, both of them descended to the ground, taking up shield and excellent sword, fully prepared,

Verse 62 (skanda.8.65.62)

viceraturmaṇḍalamājimadhye bhūmiṁ tadāgrāṅgulibhiḥ spṛśantau | tā~stā~śca mārgān laghupādacārau chidraṁ na cānyonyamavāpatustau

and circled about each other in the midst of the battlefield, touching the ground with their toe-tips, moving swift-footed along this path and that, yet neither found any opening in the other.

Verse 63 (skanda.8.65.63)

abhiplutoccaplutasiṁhapātān nivṛttakākrīḍitakordhvabāhūn | khagāpayātābhihatāpayātān niṣaṇṇakāviddhaśirobhighātān

They exchanged blows in leaping charges and high lion-like springs, sudden turns and playful feints, arms raised aloft; strikes that fled like birds and struck as they retreated; crouching stances, and blows aimed at the head.

Verse 64 (skanda.8.65.64)

utplutya vegena tadātha tasya śirodharāmāśu cakarta caṇḍā | sa kṛttamūrdhā nipapāta tasyāṁ saṁgrāmabhūmāvurasāśu daityaḥ

Then, leaping up with speed, Chanda swiftly severed his neck; his head cut off, the demon fell forward, chest-first, upon that battlefield.

Verse 65 (skanda.8.65.65)

sa śoṇitādigdhavapustadānīṁ ghanaḥ parāsuḥ patito dharaṇyām | rarāja sandhyācchuritorumūrttirviyadgato nīla ivāmbuvāhaḥ

Ghana, his body drenched in blood, lifeless, fallen upon the earth, then shone forth like a dark raincloud in the sky, drenched with the red of twilight.

Verse 66 (skanda.8.65.66)

vivyādha tīkṣṇairniryatiḥ supatraiḥ kharaṁ śarairvakṣasi hemapuṁkhaiḥ | āyodhane saṁmukhamāpatantaṁ bhallena cāsya dhvajamuccakarta

Niyati pierced Khara, as he charged straight at her in battle, in the chest with sharp, well-feathered, gold-nocked arrows, and cut down his banner with a crescent-shaft.

Verse 67 (skanda.8.65.67)

viddhaḥ sa tairabhyapatansaroṣo devīṁ jighāṁsuḥ samarerihantā | gurvī gadāṁ cāśu tadā gṛhītvā cikṣepa devyā rudhirāktamūrttiḥ

Wounded by them, that slayer-in-battle furiously charged at the goddess, wishing to kill her; then, seizing a heavy mace, his body drenched in blood, he hurled it at the goddess.

Verse 68 (skanda.8.65.68)

sā dānavāgryeṇa gadā pramuktā vicitrahemojjvalacārughaṇṭā | saṁcūrṇayāmāsa rathaṁ niyatyāḥ sūtaṁ dhvajaṁ cāśu samucchritāgram

That mace, hurled by the foremost of demons, adorned with lovely, bright, colourfully-wrought golden bells, shattered to pieces Niyati's chariot, charioteer, and her high-raised banner.

Verse 69 (skanda.8.65.69)

utpatya tūrṇaṁ niyatiḥ svavāhāt krodhena saṁraktavilolanetrā | abhyetya taṁ dānavayodhamukhyaṁ khaḍgena madhyesya śiraḥ paphāla

Leaping swiftly from her mount, her eyes rolling red with rage, Niyati approached that foremost demon-warrior and split his head in two with her sword.

Verse 70 (skanda.8.65.70)

sa dānavo visphuṭitottamāṅgaḥ kṣitau vireje srutaraktadhāraḥ | vajreṇa bhinnaḥ śikharāgradeśe giriryathā dhāturasapravāhī

That demon, his skull split open, streams of blood flowing, lay shining on the ground, like a mountain-peak cleft by a thunderbolt, streaming with molten ore.

Verse 71 (skanda.8.65.71)

prabhāvatī dhundhumajihmayātaiḥ śilīmukhairabhyahanatsupatraiḥ | urasyudārā daśabhiḥ śitāgrairghanāghanavrātasamānavarṇaiḥ

Excellent Prabhavati struck Dhundhu with ten straight-flying, well-feathered, sharp-tipped arrows, dark as a mass of dense clouds, in the chest.

Verse 72 (skanda.8.65.72)

jaghāna sā ṣoḍaśa devatāresturaṅgamān ṣoḍaśabhiḥ pṛṣatkaiḥ | nihatya caikena rathesya sūtamekena cāsya dhvajamuccakarta

She slew the sixteen horses of that enemy of the gods with sixteen arrows, slew his charioteer with one, and cut down his chariot-banner with another.

Verse 73 (skanda.8.65.73)

dhundhurgadāṁ bhārasahasragurvī cikṣepa kārtasvaracārughaṇṭām | tāmāpatantīṁ śataśaścakartta prabhāvatī daityapatipramuktām

Dhundhu hurled a mace, heavy as a thousand loads, adorned with lovely golden bells; Prabhavati, as it came flying toward her, hurled by the demon-lord, shattered it into a hundred pieces.

Verse 74 (skanda.8.65.74)

ādāya daityaḥ parighaṁ mahāntamāplutya vāhādabhitaḥ sasāra | devīmasāvañjanaśailanīlo raṇājire kāla ivāttadaṇḍaḥ

The demon, taking up a huge iron mace, leapt down from his mount and rushed straight at the goddess, dark as a collyrium mountain, like Death himself, cudgel raised, upon that battlefield.

Verse 75 (skanda.8.65.75)

abhyāpatantaṁ yudhi dānavendraṁ devī śarairabhyahanat supatraiḥ | devyā samastānavicintya bāṇānabhyetya tāmāhavamūrdhni roṣāt

As that demon-lord charged in battle, the goddess struck him with well-feathered arrows; disregarding all her arrows, he came at her in fury, at the very height of battle,

Verse 76 (skanda.8.65.76)

udbhrāmya vaivasvatadaṇḍakalpaṁ lauhaṁ prayastaṁ parighorubāhuḥ | nyapātayattaṁ parighaṁ rathesyā girernitambe kuliśaṁ yathendraḥ

and that mighty-armed one, whirling his great iron mace, like the very rod of Yama, hurled it down upon her chariot, as Indra hurls his thunderbolt upon a mountain-slope.

Verse 77 (skanda.8.65.77)

acūrṇayattaṁ rathamāśu devyāḥ sāśvaṁ sasūtadhvajahemacakram | kālāyasosau parighosurāsto vegena tatrāpasasāra devī

That iron mace, hurled by the demon, swiftly shattered the goddess's chariot into powder, together with its horses, charioteer, banner and golden wheels; the goddess then swiftly leapt clear of it.

Verse 78 (skanda.8.65.78)

dṛṣṭā sa tāṁ tatra tadāpayātāṁ tameva lauhaṁ parighaṁ gṛhītvā | abhyadravad dānavayodhamukhyo divīva citrāmasitaḥ payodaḥ

Seeing her there, thus escaped, that foremost demon-warrior, seizing that same iron mace again, charged at her, like a dark cloud rushing at a bright one in the sky.

Verse 79 (skanda.8.65.79)

utpatya sā divyavarāstramuktaiḥ kṣurapramukhyaiḥ parighañcakarta | udyamya muṣṭiṁ nibiḍaṁ tatosyā bhūyotha daityo viyadutpapāta

Leaping into the air, she cut that mace to pieces with excellent divine weapons, foremost among them crescent-headed arrows; then that demon, raising a tight fist against her, again leapt up into the sky.

Verse 80 (skanda.8.65.80)

taṁ marmagairmarmasu bāṇamukhyaiḥ saṁtāḍayaddānavamāśu devī | bhinnaḥ sa tairmarmagamaiḥ supuṁkhairantardadhe dānavayodhamukhyaḥ

The goddess swiftly struck that demon at his vital points with marrow-piercing, excellent arrows; wounded by those marrow-piercing, well-feathered shafts, that foremost demon-warrior vanished from sight.

Verse 81 (skanda.8.65.81)

atha samaramapāsya yodhamukhyai rvihataparākramapauruṣairapetaiḥ | surapatiripavo vinadya nādān | dviradavarānadhitasthurāttaśastrāḥ

Then, since their foremost warriors had withdrawn, their valour and manhood beaten down, the enemies of Indra, roaring aloud, mounted their finest elephants, weapons in hand.
