Then Indra, of a thousand eyes, spoke this word to Shankara: 'When Vishnu, to slay the mighty demon-lord Hiranyakashipu,'

Verse 13 (skanda.8.70.13)

yaccakāra vapurviṣṇurnārasiṁhaṁ bhayānakam | taṁ hatvāpi sa daityendraṁ viṣṇuḥ parabalārdanaḥ

Verse 15 (skanda.8.70.15)

'-we, O Shankara, cannot remain at peace, but stand in fear. Do us the favour, O finest of gods,'

Verse 16 (skanda.8.70.16)

prasādaṁ nastathā kartumarhasi tvaṁ surottama | atha provāca taṁ śakraṁ devadevaḥ pinākadhṛk

'-that Madhava may set aside that lion-form.' Then the God of gods, the Bearer of the Pinaka, said to Indra:

Verse 17 (skanda.8.70.17)

siṁharūpaṁ yathā śakra viṣṇustyakṣyati bhīṣaṇam | kariṣyāmi tathā śakra vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ

'O Shakra, I shall so act that Vishnu shall relinquish that terrible lion-form; let your mental anguish depart.'

Verse 18 (skanda.8.70.18)

atha vāyustadā devaṁ vyajñāpayata śaṁkaram | aśarīro yathā na syāṁ tathā me kartumarhasi

Then Vayu petitioned the god Shankara: 'Do me the favour that I may not remain bodiless.'

Verse 19 (skanda.8.70.19)

śrutvā pavanavijñaptiṁ devastasmai trilocanaḥ | śarīraṁ sumahat prādādyenāsau mūrtimānabhūt

Hearing Vayu's petition, the three-eyed god gave him a great body, by which he became embodied.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.70.20)

vijñāpitaṁ śaśāṅkena tato vyāsa mahātmanā | dakṣeṇāhaṁ purā śapto yakṣmadeho bhaviṣyasi

Then, O Vyasa, the great-souled Moon petitioned him: 'I was once cursed by Daksha: "You shall have a consumption-ridden body."'

Verse 21 (skanda.8.70.21)

sa yathā yakṣmahīnaḥ syāṁ prasādaṁ me tathā kuru | vijñaptiṁ śaśinaḥ śrutvā devastasmai vacaḥ prabhuḥ

'Grant me the favour that I may be freed from that consumption.' Hearing the Moon's petition, the Lord god spoke this word to him:

Verse 22 (skanda.8.70.22)

idaṁ prāha mahātejāḥ śaśine praṇatāya tu | tapaḥ kṛtvā prabhāse tvaṁ yakṣyahīno bhaviṣyasi

That greatly radiant one said this to the bowed Moon: 'Having performed austerity at Prabhasa, you shall become free of that consumption.'

Verse 23 (skanda.8.70.23)

iti labdhvā varaṁ sarve trayopi surasattamāḥ | vāyusomasahasrākṣāḥ svāni veśmāni bhejire

Having thus obtained their boons, all three of those foremost gods - Vayu, Soma and Indra - returned to their own abodes.

Verse 24 (skanda.8.70.24)

Verse 26 (skanda.8.70.26)

the elder Hiranyakashipu and the younger Hiranyaksha. He was, of old, consecrated by Brahma as king of the Daityas.

Verse 27 (skanda.8.70.27)

dānavānāmathendratve vipracittirmahābalaḥ | sahasrākṣaśca devānāmetadindratrayaṁ babhau

The mighty Vipracitti held the sovereignty of the Danavas, and Indra of a thousand eyes that of the gods; thus these three held sovereignty and shone forth.

atha teṣāṁ tadā vyāsa trailokyaṁ saṁpraśāsatām | hiraṇyakaśipurdaityaḥ śakrarājyajihīrṣayā

Then, O Vyasa, while they thus governed the three worlds, the demon Hiranyakashipu, desiring to seize Indra's kingdom,

Verse 29 (skanda.8.70.29)

trailokyamātmasāt kartuṁ matiṁ tapasi sandadhe | sa gatvā dakṣiṇāmāśāṁ śrīparvatasamāsthitaḥ

Verse 30 (skanda.8.70.30)

tapastīvraṁ mahattepe daityarājo mahābalaḥ | svaraktena juhāvāgnau saṁmiśrāḥ samidhaścarūn

That mighty demon-king performed intense, great austerity; he offered into the fire, mixed with his own blood, kindling-sticks and oblation-grains,

Verse 31 (skanda.8.70.31)

ūrdhvabāhunirālambo divā sūryārpitekṣaṇaḥ | ekapādonimeṣaśca sotiṣṭhat kṛtaniścayaḥ

-and, arms raised, without support, his eyes fixed upon the sun by day, standing on one foot, unblinking, resolute, he remained thus.

Verse 32 (skanda.8.70.32)

dve sahasre tadābdānāṁ divyānāṁ sthitavānbalī | mahatā tapasā tasya trailokyaṁ saṁpracukṣubhe

That mighty one remained thus for two thousand divine years; by his great austerity, the three worlds were thrown into turmoil.

Verse 33 (skanda.8.70.33)

athābhyetya suraśreṣṭho brahmā kamalavāhanaḥ | iṣṭaṁ vṛṇu varaṁ rājanniti provāca sādaram

Then Brahma, foremost of gods, borne on the lotus, approached and respectfully said: 'Choose the boon you desire, O king.'

Verse 34 (skanda.8.70.34)

taṁ dṛṣṭatvā daityarājastu brahmāṇaṁ varadaṁ prabhum | varaṁ prārthitavān vyāsa śṛṇu yādṛśamīpsitama

Seeing that Lord Brahma, the boon-giver, the demon-king asked for a boon; hear, O Vyasa, what he desired.

Verse 35 (skanda.8.70.35)

abravīt sontaraṁ vrahmā sa cainaṁ samabhāṣata | ataśca yonyathā mṛtyurbhaviṣyati sa me prabho

Brahma said there was an exception; and he said to him: 'And apart from this, O Lord, let there be some other death for me that I choose,'

Verse 38 (skanda.8.70.38)

sopi sarvāsuraśreṣṭho hiraṇyakaśipustadā | jitvā śakraṁ svayaṁ rājyaṁ cakāra ditinandanaḥ

Then that Hiranyakashipu too, foremost of all Asuras, son of Diti, having conquered Indra, made himself king,

Verse 40 (skanda.8.70.40)

and, having made the three worlds his own, having conquered all the dwellers of heaven, he himself became Indra, himself Vayu, himself Yama, himself Kubera, Varuna, Agni - he himself became all of these.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.70.41)

Sanatkumara said: Well then, I shall tell you what you ask, O one of good vows. Where the demon Hiranyakashipu performed his great austerity,

Verse 46 (skanda.8.70.46)

kṛtvā pradakṣiṇāṁ śambhossapraṇāmaṁ mahāmune | gacchatastānmuhurdṛṣṭvā papraccha bhuvaneśvaram

-O great sage, circumambulating and bowing to Shambhu, and then departing; seeing them repeatedly, she asked the Lord of the worlds:

Verse 47 (skanda.8.70.47)

ka ete deva saṁsiddhā yogīśāstvāṁ praṇemire | tato devaḥ prahasyaināmuvāca parameśvaraḥ

'O god, who are these perfected lords of yoga who have bowed to you?' Then the Supreme Lord, smiling, said to her:

Verse 48 (skanda.8.70.48)
