Verse 1 (skanda.8.76.1)

sanatkumāra uvāca | atha tasyāṁ saha strībhiḥ kaumudyāṁ daityadānavāḥ | remire raktamanaso devāḥ svargagatā iva |

Sanatkumara said: Then, at that Kaumudi festival, the Daityas and Danavas sported with women, their minds steeped in passion, as though they were gods who had gone to heaven.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.76.2)

tatra kācicchubhāpāṅgī padmaṁ divyaṁ mukhopari | mukhāravindatrāṇārthaṁ dadau somabhayādiva |

There, a certain woman with lovely eyes placed a divine lotus over her face, as if to shield her lotus-like countenance out of fear of the moon.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.76.3)

aparā caraṇenaitya priyaṁ mattābhyatāḍayat | śītāṁśuriva pādena vikacaṁ śaradambujam |

Another woman, intoxicated with passion, came near and struck her beloved with her foot, as the cool-rayed moon touches with its ray-like foot a blossoming autumn lotus.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.76.4)

aparā rājamārgāṇāmanabhijñāḥ kulastriyaḥ | sphāṭikopacitāṁ bhūmiṁ dṛṣṭavā muñcanti pādukām |

Other well-born women, unfamiliar with royal roads, on seeing the crystal-paved ground, took off their sandals, mistaking it for water.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.76.5)

utkṛṣya vasanaṁ cānyā viprendra jalaśaṅkayā | rājamārgeṣu gacchanti dṛṣṭvā maṇicitāṁ bhuvam |

O foremost of sages, other women, seeing the gem-paved ground and fearing it to be water, lifted up their garments as they walked along the royal roads.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.76.6)

kācit priyeṇa santyaktā raktenānyena nirgatā | gṛhāccandrāṁśubhiḥ spṛṣṭā papāta madanālasā |

A certain woman, abandoned by her lover, went out of the house with another man who loved her; touched by the moon's rays, she fell down, overcome with the languor of desire.

Verse 7 (skanda.8.76.7)

patitaiva ca sā somamuvācedaṁ kulāṅganā | bhūyo māṁ tvaṁ karaistīkṣṇairdahase nalinīmiva |

Even as she fell, that noble woman said this to the moon: "Again and again you scorch me with your sharp rays, as though I were a lotus."

Verse 8 (skanda.8.76.8)

sūryeṇa kila dagdhāni jīvayasyauṣadhāni ha | madanena kathaṁ dagdhāṁ na jīvayasi māṁ dṛḍham |

"The herbs that are scorched by the sun, you indeed revive; then why do you not likewise revive me, who am so utterly scorched by the fire of desire?"

Verse 9 (skanda.8.76.9)

kāścid ramaṇyo dolāsu dolayantyo parastriyaḥ | jalacandra ivābhānti vīcicañcalamūrttayaḥ |

Some lovely women, swinging on swings, their forms trembling like waves, shone like the moon reflected and quivering upon water.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.76.10)

kecid gāyanti sahitāḥ strībhirdaityā mahābalāḥ | gandharvā nandanavane apsarobhiryathā saha |

Some mighty Daityas sang together with women, just as the Gandharvas sing together with the Apsaras in the Nandana grove.

Verse 11 (skanda.8.76.11)

rājamārgaḥ kvacid bhāti strībhirbahvībhirāvṛtaḥ | yathā nabhasi citrosau divyo devapathaḥ śubhaḥ |

In places, the royal road, thronged with many women, shone like that wondrous and auspicious divine pathway of the gods in the sky.

Verse 12 (skanda.8.76.12)

kvacinnūpurakāñcīnā kokilānāñca nisvanaḥ | babhau śrotrasukhaḥ śrotuḥ kalāmadanadīpanaḥ |

Somewhere the tinkling of anklets and girdles mingled with the sweet notes of cuckoos, delighting the ear of the listener and kindling in him the flame of desire.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.76.13)

kvacidramaṇaraktānāṁ strīṇāṁ vyāsa priyaiḥ saha | hṛdayavyākulakaraḥ śrūyate madhuraḥ svaraḥ |

Somewhere, O Vyasa, the sweet voices of women deeply in love, speaking together with their beloveds, could be heard, stirring the heart with longing.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.76.14)

evaṁ samabhavad vyāsa bahucitraḥ sa utsavaḥ | dānavānāṁ tadā prītisaukhyaviśrambhavarddhanaḥ |

Thus, O Vyasa, that festival, rich in manifold wonders, unfolded, increasing among the Danavas love, happiness, and mutual trust.

Verse 15 (skanda.8.76.15)

When that celebration had once more been carried through as before, O Vyasa, the Danava ministers and subjects then assembled together.

sukhāsīnaṁ tadā vyāsa siṁhāsanagataṁ yuvā | praṇamya śirasā pūrvaṁ jānubhyāmavaniṁ gataḥ |

O Vyasa, that young man first bowed his head to the king who sat at ease upon the lion-throne, and then, with his knees, touched the ground.

Verse 46 (skanda.8.76.46)

Prahrada and the others, led by Vipracitti, have all arrived in the hall - let this be known to you. Whatever else is fitting, that you should now do."

Verse 47 (skanda.8.76.47)

Sanatkumara said: Then, hearing that all had arrived in the hall, the enemy of the gods, the king, rose up at once, like the banner-pole of Indra raised at a festival.

Verse 48 (skanda.8.76.48)

ājānubāhurvṛttākṣaḥ piṅgākṣaścordhvaromavān | vajrasaṁhananaścaiva mahāyogī mahābala |

His arms reached to his knees, his eyes were round and tawny, his hair stood on end; his frame was as firm as a thunderbolt, and he was a great yogin of tremendous strength.

Verse 50 (skanda.8.76.50)

kiroṭenāti saṁbhāti savitrevodayastathā | hāravaryāṅkitoraskaḥ sabalāka ivāmbudaḥ | saputraḥ prayayau vyāsa himavāniva mūrttimān |

With his crown he shone exceedingly, like the rising sun; his chest, marked with a splendid necklace, was like a rain-cloud with a flock of white cranes upon it. O Vyasa, together with his sons he set forth, like the Himalaya mountain grown embodied and walking.

Verse 51 (skanda.8.76.51)

sa tāṁ tadā dānavarājasattamo vicitraratnāṁśuparītakuṇḍalaḥ | sabhāṁ viveśāsuradaityapuṁgavaiḥ samāvṛtāṁ dyāmuditairgrahairiva |

That foremost of Danava kings, his earrings encircled by the rays of many-hued gems, then entered that assembly hall, thronged with the foremost of Asuras and Daityas, as the sky is filled with risen planets.
