Verse 1 (skanda.8.86.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततो दग्धरथः खस्थो दानवः स विरोचनः । वेगेनासिं विनिष्कृष्य स पूष्णो निशिताञ्छरान् ।

sanatkumāra uvāca | tato dagdharathaḥ khastho dānavaḥ sa virocanaḥ | vegenāsiṁ viniṣkṛṣya sa pūṣṇo niśitāñcharān |

Sanatkumara said: Then that Danava Virochana, his chariot burnt, standing in the sky, swiftly drew his sword and,

Verse 2 (skanda.8.86.2)

चिच्छेदापततः सर्वान् कार्मुकं चैव वीर्यवान् । तथा चैनं पुनर्मूध्नि खङ्गेन समताडयत् ।

cicchedāpatataḥ sarvān kārmukaṁ caiva vīryavān | tathā cainaṁ punarmūdhni khaṅgena samatāḍayat |

valorous, cut down all the arrows as they came, and his bow as well; then he struck him again upon the head with his sword.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.86.3)

स तेन सुप्रहारेण क्षरद्रुधिरमस्तकः । रथोपस्थे पपाताशु वृत्तोत्सव इव ध्वजः ।

sa tena suprahāreṇa kṣaradrudhiramastakaḥ | rathopasthe papātāśu vṛttotsava iva dhvajaḥ |

Struck by that heavy blow, his head streaming blood, he fell at once upon the floor of his chariot, like a flagpole toppled after a festival.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.86.4)

पतितं तं स दैत्येन्द्रः प्रगृह्याशु महाबलः । चिक्षेप देवराजानं नर्दमानः पयोदवत् ।

patitaṁ taṁ sa daityendraḥ pragṛhyāśu mahābalaḥ | cikṣepa devarājānaṁ nardamānaḥ payodavat |

The mighty lord of the Daityas quickly seized him as he fell, and, roaring like a raincloud, hurled him toward the king of the gods.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.86.5)

बलिं विव्याध मित्रश्च जत्रुदेशे शरैस्त्रिभिः । बलिरेकेन भल्लेन तस्य चिच्छेद कार्मुकम् ।

baliṁ vivyādha mitraśca jatrudeśe śaraistribhiḥ | balirekena bhallena tasya ciccheda kārmukam |

Mitra pierced Bali with three arrows about the collarbone; Bali, with a single broad-headed arrow, severed his bow.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.86.6)

अथैनं पुनरन्येन हृदये समताडयत् । स मूढो मृतकल्पश्च रथोपस्थे ससाद ह ।

athainaṁ punaranyena hṛdaye samatāḍayat | sa mūḍho mṛtakalpaśca rathopasthe sasāda ha |

Then, with another arrow, he struck him again in the heart; and he, bewildered and as if dead, sank down upon the floor of his chariot.

Verse 7 (skanda.8.86.7)

तं सारथिर्मृत्युभयाद् विषण्णं समुपस्थितम् । अपोवाह तदा व्यास ततो दैत्या विचुक्रुशुः ।

taṁ sārathirmṛtyubhayād viṣaṇṇaṁ samupasthitam | apovāha tadā vyāsa tato daityā vicukruśuḥ |

His charioteer, O Vyasa, seeing him thus dejected from fear of death, then drove him away; and at that the Daityas raised a cry of triumph.

Verse 8 (skanda.8.86.8)

बाणं विव्याध वरुणः पृषत्कानां शतेन ह । स कार्मुकशतानि स्म पञ्च बाणः प्रतापवान् ।

bāṇaṁ vivyādha varuṇaḥ pṛṣatkānāṁ śatena ha | sa kārmukaśatāni sma pañca bāṇaḥ pratāpavān |

Varuna pierced Bana with a hundred arrows; that glorious Bana, in turn, five hundred bows,

Verse 9 (skanda.8.86.9)

आकृष्य युगपत् क्रुद्धः शरांश्चिक्षेप तावतः । तानापतत एवाथ वरुणो लघुह्स्तवान् ।

ākṛṣya yugapat kruddhaḥ śarāṁścikṣepa tāvataḥ | tānāpatata evātha varuṇo laghuhstavān |

drawing them all at once in fury, and loosed that many arrows at him. As they came hurtling on, Varuna, swift of hand,

Verse 10 (skanda.8.86.10)

एकैकं पञ्चधा कृत्वा बाणं विव्याध पञ्चभिः । ततोस्य कार्मुकान् सर्वान् वरुणः प्रहसन् बली ।

ekaikaṁ pañcadhā kṛtvā bāṇaṁ vivyādha pañcabhiḥ | tatosya kārmukān sarvān varuṇaḥ prahasan balī |

split each one into five, piercing it with five arrows apiece; then, laughing, mighty Varuna

Verse 11 (skanda.8.86.11)

चिच्छेद सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् । अथ छिन्नधनुर्देत्यस्तस्य चिक्षेप वै गदाम् ।

ciccheda sāyakaistīkṣṇaistadadbhutamivābhavat | atha chinnadhanurdetyastasya cikṣepa vai gadām |

severed all his bows with his sharp shafts - it seemed a wondrous thing. Then that Daitya, his bow cut away, hurled a mace at him.

Verse 12 (skanda.8.86.12)

छिन्नां दृष्ट्वा च तां भूयो गदाः पश्चासृजद्बली । स एकस्यां तदा सक्तस्ता गदा नाभ्यवैक्षत ।

chinnāṁ dṛṣṭvā ca tāṁ bhūyo gadāḥ paścāsṛjadbalī | sa ekasyāṁ tadā saktastā gadā nābhyavaikṣata |

Seeing it cut down, that mighty one loosed a series of maces at him; and as he was occupied warding off one, he did not notice the rest.

Verse 13 (skanda.8.86.13)

अविक्षताश्च ताः सर्वाः पेतुस्तस्य ततोपरि । काचिन्मुकुटमामर्द्य निपपात महीतले ।

avikṣatāśca tāḥ sarvāḥ petustasya tatopari | kācinmukuṭamāmardya nipapāta mahītale |

All those unwarded maces then fell upon him. One, crushing his crown, fell to the earth.

Verse 14 (skanda.8.86.14)

काचिच्च कार्मुकं घोरं ह्स्तदेशान्न्यपातयत् । काचिद् ध्वजं दृढं दिव्यं चिक्षेप धरणीतले ।

kācicca kārmukaṁ ghoraṁ hstadeśānnyapātayat | kācid dhvajaṁ dṛḍhaṁ divyaṁ cikṣepa dharaṇītale |

Another struck the terrible bow from his hand; another hurled his firm, divine banner down to the ground.

Verse 15 (skanda.8.86.15)

काचिद्रथं तदाहत्य पांसुग्रासं चकार ह । उरस्यूरूदरे कटयामपरास्तस्य ता गदाः ।

kācidrathaṁ tadāhatya pāṁsugrāsaṁ cakāra ha | urasyūrūdare kaṭayāmaparāstasya tā gadāḥ |

Another, striking his chariot, reduced it to a mouthful of dust; while other maces of his struck him upon the chest, thighs, belly, and hip -

Verse 16 (skanda.8.86.16)

पतंत्यः सुमहाघोरा आर्तिं चक्रुर्महाभयाः । एवं स तेन विरथः कृतः कृच्छ्रेण धीमता ।

pataṁtyaḥ sumahāghorā ārtiṁ cakrurmahābhayāḥ | evaṁ sa tena virathaḥ kṛtaḥ kṛcchreṇa dhīmatā |

falling, most terrible and dreadful, causing him great anguish. Thus, with great difficulty, that wise one made him (Varuna) chariotless.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.86.17)

वरुणस्तं समुत्सृज्य जगामान्यद्रणाजिरम् । यमोन्धकं समासाद्य तिष्ठतिष्ठेति चोदितः ।

varuṇastaṁ samutsṛjya jagāmānyadraṇājiram | yamondhakaṁ samāsādya tiṣṭhatiṣṭheti coditaḥ |

Varuna, leaving him there, went to another part of the battlefield. Yama, meanwhile, coming upon Andhaka, urged him on: "Stand, stand!"

Verse 18 (skanda.8.86.18)

अथ तस्य ततो दण्डं रथं प्रति समुत्सृजत् । स रथं तस्य संचूर्णं कृत्वा शतसहस्रशः ।

atha tasya tato daṇḍaṁ rathaṁ prati samutsṛjat | sa rathaṁ tasya saṁcūrṇaṁ kṛtvā śatasahasraśaḥ |

Then he hurled his rod at Andhaka's chariot; and, having pulverized that chariot into a hundred thousand pieces,

Verse 19 (skanda.8.86.19)

यमह्स्तं पुनर्गत्वा तथैव समतिष्ठत । अन्धकोपि रथं त्यक्त्वा गदापाणिर्महाबलः ।

yamahstaṁ punargatvā tathaiva samatiṣṭhata | andhakopi rathaṁ tyaktvā gadāpāṇirmahābalaḥ |

that rod returned again to Yama's hand and stood there as before. Andhaka too, mighty, abandoning his chariot, mace in hand,

Verse 20 (skanda.8.86.20)

यमं समभिदुद्राव क्रोधाद्वह्निमिवोत्सृजन् । स तस्य धावतो वेगात् पितृराजो यमः स्वयम् ।

yamaṁ samabhidudrāva krodhādvahnimivotsṛjan | sa tasya dhāvato vegāt pitṛrājo yamaḥ svayam |

charged straight at Yama, blazing forth with fury like fire let loose. As he charged with such speed, Yama himself, lord of the ancestors,

Verse 21 (skanda.8.86.21)

दण्डेनैव गदामुग्रां भस्मसायुज्यमानयत् । स प्रहस्य तदा चैनमुवाच प्रसभं यमः ।

daṇḍenaiva gadāmugrāṁ bhasmasāyujyamānayat | sa prahasya tadā cainamuvāca prasabhaṁ yamaḥ |

with his very rod reduced that terrible mace to ashes. Then Yama, laughing, said to him forcefully:

Verse 22 (skanda.8.86.22)

भवतो धाम यदभूत्तते विनिहतं मया । सांप्रतं त्वामपि पुनन्नेष्याम्यद्य स्वमालयम् ।

bhavato dhāma yadabhūttate vinihataṁ mayā | sāṁprataṁ tvāmapi punanneṣyāmyadya svamālayam |

"Whatever splendor was yours has now been destroyed by me. Now I shall purify you too, and bring you this very day to my own abode."

Verse 23 (skanda.8.86.23)

अहं हि सर्वलोकस्य मरणे हेतुरीश्वरः । मया वैरं समासाद्य क्वान्ते जीवं विमोक्ष्यसे । अद्य त्वा निहनिष्यामि सुदृढं क्रियतां जगत् ।

ahaṁ hi sarvalokasya maraṇe heturīśvaraḥ | mayā vairaṁ samāsādya kvānte jīvaṁ vimokṣyase | adya tvā nihaniṣyāmi sudṛḍhaṁ kriyatāṁ jagat |

"I am the lord and cause of the death of all the world. Having incurred my enmity, where will you finally save your life? Today I shall surely slay you - let the world stand firmly resolved to this."

Verse 24 (skanda.8.86.24)

अथवाद्य गतो बन्धं पूर्वं चान्धक मत्पुरम् । अग्रे द्रष्टासि तत्रैव सर्वानेतान् सुरद्विषः ।

athavādya gato bandhaṁ pūrvaṁ cāndhaka matpuram | agre draṣṭāsi tatraiva sarvānetān suradviṣaḥ |

"Or rather, O Andhaka, go bound first to my own city; there you shall see beforehand all these enemies of the gods already gathered."

Verse 25 (skanda.8.86.25)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथैवंवादिनं युद्धं ह्यभीतोन्धकदानवः । उवाच तं यमं क्रुद्धं क्रोधाद् दीप्तानलेक्षणः ।

sanatkumāra uvāca | athaivaṁvādinaṁ yuddhaṁ hyabhītondhakadānavaḥ | uvāca taṁ yamaṁ kruddhaṁ krodhād dīptānalekṣaṇaḥ |

Sanatkumara said: Then, unafraid of that battle, the Danava Andhaka, his eyes blazing like fire in fury, said to that wrathful Yama, speaking thus:

Verse 26 (skanda.8.86.26)

हिरण्याक्षसुतो दृप्त अन्धकोस्मि सुरान्तकः । महायोगबलोपेतो नास्मि प्राकृतदानवः ।

hiraṇyākṣasuto dṛpta andhakosmi surāntakaḥ | mahāyogabalopeto nāsmi prākṛtadānavaḥ |

"I am proud Andhaka, son of Hiranyaksha, the destroyer of gods, endowed with the power of great yoga - I am no ordinary Danava."

Verse 27 (skanda.8.86.27)

अंगाद्येन समुत्कृत्य भागान् मांसस्य कार्षिकान् । संवत्सरशतान्यष्टौ पञ्च चैव हुतोनलः ।

aṁgādyena samutkṛtya bhāgān māṁsasya kārṣikān | saṁvatsaraśatānyaṣṭau pañca caiva hutonalaḥ |

"He who, cutting from his own body portions of flesh, each the weight of a karsha, offered them into fire for eight hundred and five years,"

Verse 28 (skanda.8.86.28)

तुष्टो ब्रह्मा ददौ यस्य सदैवामरतां शुभाम् । सोहं नाम्ना महासत्वो मृत्युत्सेधो न संशयः ।

tuṣṭo brahmā dadau yasya sadaivāmaratāṁ śubhām | sohaṁ nāmnā mahāsatvo mṛtyutsedho na saṁśayaḥ |

"to whom Brahma, well pleased, granted an auspicious, everlasting immortality - I am he, a being of great might, whose very name means 'unassailed by Death,' without doubt."

Verse 29 (skanda.8.86.29)

न त्वं मम कृतो मृत्युः सिंहस्येव वने शशः । अहं तु भविता मृत्युस्तव नास्त्यत्र संशयः ।

na tvaṁ mama kṛto mṛtyuḥ siṁhasyeva vane śaśaḥ | ahaṁ tu bhavitā mṛtyustava nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ |

"You have not been ordained as my death, as a hare is not the death of a lion in the forest. Rather, I shall be your death - of this there is no doubt."

Verse 30 (skanda.8.86.30)

अद्य त्वाहं दुरात्मानं सर्वलोकभयंकरम् । हत्वा श्रेयो विधास्यामि त्रैलोक्यस्येति मे मतिः ।

adya tvāhaṁ durātmānaṁ sarvalokabhayaṁkaram | hatvā śreyo vidhāsyāmi trailokyasyeti me matiḥ |

"Today, having slain you, the evil-souled terror of all the world, I shall bring about the welfare of the triple world - this is my resolve."

Verse 31 (skanda.8.86.31)

देवानाञ्च भवान्नित्यं हन्तव्यो विप्रिये स्थितः । तेषामपि प्रियो ह्यद्य भविष्यति हते त्ययि ।

devānāñca bhavānnityaṁ hantavyo vipriye sthitaḥ | teṣāmapi priyo hyadya bhaviṣyati hate tyayi |

"You, who always stand opposed to the welfare of the gods, deserve forever to be slain by them; today, with you slain, you shall become dear to them as well."

Verse 32 (skanda.8.86.32)

न त्वयासादितं पूर्वं हरता जीवितानि हि । किञ्चिद् भूतं महद्भूतं तेन त्वं निर्भयः सदा ।

na tvayāsāditaṁ pūrvaṁ haratā jīvitāni hi | kiñcid bhūtaṁ mahadbhūtaṁ tena tvaṁ nirbhayaḥ sadā |

"No being, small or great, has ever before withstood you, taking life as you do; that is why you have always been fearless."

Verse 33 (skanda.8.86.33)

देवास्तव भयाद् भीता अशक्तस्त्वद्वधे ततः । अमृतादीनि लिप्सन्ति पूजयन्ति सदा च ते ।

devāstava bhayād bhītā aśaktastvadvadhe tataḥ | amṛtādīni lipsanti pūjayanti sadā ca te |

"The gods, afraid of you, unable to slay you, therefore seek after nectar and such things, and always propitiate you."

Verse 34 (skanda.8.86.34)

अद्य त्वयि हते क्रूरे निर्द्वन्द्वास्तेपि सामरात् । अमृते न तथा प्रीतिं करिष्यन्ति न संशयः ।

adya tvayi hate krūre nirdvandvāstepi sāmarāt | amṛte na tathā prītiṁ kariṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ |

"Today, with you, the cruel one, slain, they, together with Indra, freed from all such struggle, shall no longer take such delight even in nectar - of this there is no doubt."

Verse 35 (skanda.8.86.35)

अद्य गर्वश्च दर्पश्च योगमाहात्म्यमेव च । प्राणैः सहैव देहान्ते नाशयिष्यामि सर्वशः ।

adya garvaśca darpaśca yogamāhātmyameva ca | prāṇaiḥ sahaiva dehānte nāśayiṣyāmi sarvaśaḥ |

"Today I shall utterly destroy your pride, your arrogance, and your yogic power itself, together with your very life, at the ending of your body."

Verse 36 (skanda.8.86.36)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । स एवमसुरेन्द्रेण तर्जितो भास्करात्मजः । दण्डेनासुरशार्दूलमुत्तमांगेभ्यताडयत् ।

sanatkumāra uvāca | sa evamasurendreṇa tarjito bhāskarātmajaḥ | daṇḍenāsuraśārdūlamuttamāṁgebhyatāḍayat |

Sanatkumara said: Thus rebuked by that lord of the Asuras, the son of the Sun (Yama) struck that tiger among Asuras upon the head with his rod.

Verse 37 (skanda.8.86.37)

कालश्च तं करेणैव हृदये समताडयत् । मृत्युश्चाशनिना क्षिप्रं शिरस्येवाभ्यताडयत् ।

kālaśca taṁ kareṇaiva hṛdaye samatāḍayat | mṛtyuścāśaninā kṣipraṁ śirasyevābhyatāḍayat |

Kala struck him on the chest with his very hand; Death swiftly struck him on the head with his thunderbolt-weapon.

Verse 38 (skanda.8.86.38)

कण्ठे च नियतिस्तस्य पाशं चिक्षेप दारुणम् । कृतान्तः परिघेनैव गण्डदेशे समाहनत् ।

kaṇṭhe ca niyatistasya pāśaṁ cikṣepa dāruṇam | kṛtāntaḥ parighenaiva gaṇḍadeśe samāhanat |

Niyati (Destiny) cast a fearsome noose about his neck; Kritanta struck him on the cheek with his iron bar.

Verse 39 (skanda.8.86.39)

स तैरमोघैर्यामैश्च प्रहतोन्धकदानवः । पुष्पवृष्टया यथा कश्चिन्नार्तिमानभवत्तथा ।

sa tairamoghairyāmaiśca prahatondhakadānavaḥ | puṣpavṛṣṭayā yathā kaścinnārtimānabhavattathā |

Struck by those unfailing weapons of Yama's attendants, the Danava Andhaka remained no more distressed than one struck by a shower of flowers.

Verse 40 (skanda.8.86.40)

न पाशास्तस्य लीयन्ते दण्डो वा परिघोपि वा । अन्यानि चास्य तीव्राणि न दुःखाय भवन्त्युत ।

na pāśāstasya līyante daṇḍo vā parighopi vā | anyāni cāsya tīvrāṇi na duḥkhāya bhavantyuta |

Neither the nooses could hold him, nor the rod, nor even the iron bar; and his other fierce weapons too caused him no pain at all.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.86.41)

ततस्सर्वैस्तदोत्क्रुष्टं दानवैः सर्वतोदिशम् । अवाद्यन्त च तूर्याणि मुमुदे चान्धको भृशम् ।

tatassarvaistadotkruṣṭaṁ dānavaiḥ sarvatodiśam | avādyanta ca tūryāṇi mumude cāndhako bhṛśam |

Then all the Danavas raised a shout on every side, and sounded their trumpets, and Andhaka rejoiced greatly.

Verse 42 (skanda.8.86.42)

स तेषां तुष्टिशब्देन मदवीर्यसमीरितः । विनद्याम्बुदवद् व्यास यममेवाभिदुद्रुवे ।

sa teṣāṁ tuṣṭiśabdena madavīryasamīritaḥ | vinadyāmbudavad vyāsa yamamevābhidudruve |

Stirred by the sound of their delight, intoxicated with the pride of his own strength, roaring like a raincloud, O Vyasa, he charged straight at Yama.

Verse 43 (skanda.8.86.43)

स गत्वा तस्य वेगेन हन्यमानोपि किंकरैः । आाजघान महावेगो मुष्टिनोरसि तं यमम् ।

sa gatvā tasya vegena hanyamānopi kiṁkaraiḥ | āājaghāna mahāvego muṣṭinorasi taṁ yamam |

Going to him with speed, though being struck by his attendants, that mighty and swift one struck Yama himself upon the chest with his fist.

Verse 44 (skanda.8.86.44)

पुनश्च महिषं तस्य शिरस्यभिहनत्पदा । तावुभौ विह्वलौ तत्र भ्रमित्वा किञ्चिदन्तरम् ।

punaśca mahiṣaṁ tasya śirasyabhihanatpadā | tāvubhau vihvalau tatra bhramitvā kiñcidantaram |

And again he struck his buffalo upon the head with his foot; the two of them, both reeling, wheeled about there for some little distance.

Verse 45 (skanda.8.86.45)

हित्वान्धकं ततस्तूर्णं ययतुर्मुनिसत्तम । जयन्तश्चेल्वलं प्राप्य विव्याध दशभिः शरैः ।

hitvāndhakaṁ tatastūrṇaṁ yayaturmunisattama | jayantaścelvalaṁ prāpya vivyādha daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ |

Then, leaving Andhaka, O foremost of sages, they swiftly went their way. Jayanta, meanwhile, coming upon Ilvala, pierced him with ten arrows.

Verse 46 (skanda.8.86.46)

तस्येल्वलश्चकर्ताशु ध्वजं रत्नविभूषितम् । हयानां चैव योक्त्राणि प्रतोदं चैव काञ्चनम् ।

tasyelvalaścakartāśu dhvajaṁ ratnavibhūṣitam | hayānāṁ caiva yoktrāṇi pratodaṁ caiva kāñcanam |

Ilvala at once cut off his jewel-adorned banner, the harness-straps of his horses, and his golden goad.

Verse 47 (skanda.8.86.47)

विना योक्त्रैर्हयास्तस्य रथं त्यक्त्वा समुद्धताः । लाना विजग्मुर्हेषन्तो जयन्तो विरथोभवत् ।

vinā yoktrairhayāstasya rathaṁ tyaktvā samuddhatāḥ | lānā vijagmurheṣanto jayanto virathobhavat |

Their traces cut, his horses, excited, abandoned the chariot and ran off in various directions, neighing; Jayanta was left without a chariot.

Verse 48 (skanda.8.86.48)

स रथं संपरित्यज्य भूस्थः शक्रात्मजः प्रभुः । इल्वलस्य हयान्सूतं ध्वजञ्चैव न्यपातयत् ।

sa rathaṁ saṁparityajya bhūsthaḥ śakrātmajaḥ prabhuḥ | ilvalasya hayānsūtaṁ dhvajañcaiva nyapātayat |

That lord, the son of Indra, abandoning his own chariot, standing on the ground, felled Ilvala's horses, charioteer, and banner.

Verse 49 (skanda.8.86.49)

अथोभौ विरथौ भूत्वा ह्यन्योन्यविजयैषिणौ । अविध्येतां तदा यस्य कार्मुके सायकैः शितैः ।

athobhau virathau bhūtvā hyanyonyavijayaiṣiṇau | avidhyetāṁ tadā yasya kārmuke sāyakaiḥ śitaiḥ |

Then, both now chariotless and each desiring victory over the other, they pierced one another with sharp arrows from their bows.

Verse 50 (skanda.8.86.50)

परस्परविनिर्मुक्तानुभौ संवार्य सायकान् । अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य नेदतुः सागराविव ।

parasparavinirmuktānubhau saṁvārya sāyakān | astrairastrāṇi saṁvārya nedatuḥ sāgarāviva |

Each warding off the arrows loosed by the other, warding off weapon with weapon, they roared like two oceans.

Verse 51 (skanda.8.86.51)

अथ शक्रसुतः श्रीमाँल्लब्ध्वा तस्य तदान्तरम् । धनुश्चिच्छेद भल्लेन ननाद च पुनः पुनः ।

atha śakrasutaḥ śrīmā~llabdhvā tasya tadāntaram | dhanuściccheda bhallena nanāda ca punaḥ punaḥ |

Then the glorious son of Indra, finding an opening, severed his (Ilvala's) bow with a broad-headed arrow, and roared again and again.

Verse 52 (skanda.8.86.52)

स विकृत्तधनुर्दैत्यः खङ्गं दीप्तानलप्रभम् । भ्रामयित्वा विचिक्षेप तमप्यस्याच्छिनत्तदा ।

sa vikṛttadhanurdaityaḥ khaṅgaṁ dīptānalaprabham | bhrāmayitvā vicikṣepa tamapyasyācchinattadā |

That Daitya, his bow cut away, whirled his sword, blazing like fire, and hurled it; but that too he (Jayanta) severed then.

Verse 53 (skanda.8.86.53)

गृहीत्वान्यस्य पतितां गदां हेमविभूषिताम् । भ्रामयित्वा तु चिक्षेप सापदुद्राव वेगवत् ।

gṛhītvānyasya patitāṁ gadāṁ hemavibhūṣitām | bhrāmayitvā tu cikṣepa sāpadudrāva vegavat |

Taking up another's fallen, gold-adorned mace, he whirled it and hurled it; and it flew forth with great speed.

Verse 54 (skanda.8.86.54)

स यावत्तां गदां घोरां शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः । विचिच्छेद दितेः पुत्रस्तावदस्याच्छिनद्धनुः ।

sa yāvattāṁ gadāṁ ghorāṁ śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ | viciccheda diteḥ putrastāvadasyācchinaddhanuḥ |

Even as that son of Diti (Ilvala) was cutting that terrible mace to pieces with straight-jointed arrows, he (Jayanta) severed his bow.

Verse 55 (skanda.8.86.55)

अथ यावत्स निस्त्रिंशं जग्राहादितिनन्दनः । तावदेनं पदा दैत्यो वामेनोरस्यताडयत् ।

atha yāvatsa nistriṁśaṁ jagrāhāditinandanaḥ | tāvadenaṁ padā daityo vāmenorasyatāḍayat |

Then, as that son of Aditi (Jayanta) reached for his sword, the Daitya struck him upon the chest with his left foot.

Verse 56 (skanda.8.86.56)

तमेव तस्य जग्राह पादं स च महाबलः । जयन्तो भ्रामयच्चैनं नर्दमानो यथाम्बुदः ।

tameva tasya jagrāha pādaṁ sa ca mahābalaḥ | jayanto bhrāmayaccainaṁ nardamāno yathāmbudaḥ |

But that mighty Jayanta seized that very foot, and, roaring like a raincloud, whirled him about.

Verse 57 (skanda.8.86.57)

ततो हाहाकृतमभूदसुराणां बले महत् । यात त्रायत दैत्येन्द्रमिल्वलं शीघ्रमित्युत ।

tato hāhākṛtamabhūdasurāṇāṁ bale mahat | yāta trāyata daityendramilvalaṁ śīghramityuta |

Then a great cry of woe arose in the army of the Asuras: "Go, save the lord of the Daityas, Ilvala - quickly!"

Verse 58 (skanda.8.86.58)

देवानां सिंहनादाश्च शंखशब्दाश्च पुष्कलाः । तूर्याणि चाप्यवाद्यन्त साधुसाध्विति चाभवत् ।

devānāṁ siṁhanādāśca śaṁkhaśabdāśca puṣkalāḥ | tūryāṇi cāpyavādyanta sādhusādhviti cābhavat |

Among the gods there arose lion-roars and abundant conch-blasts, and trumpets sounded, and there was a cry of "Well done, well done!"

Verse 59 (skanda.8.86.59)

जयन्तोपि यथा चक्रं विधाता बलवाँस्तदा । भ्रामयामास देत्येन्द्रं युगान्ताम्बुदवन्नदन् ।

jayantopi yathā cakraṁ vidhātā balavā~stadā | bhrāmayāmāsa detyendraṁ yugāntāmbudavannadan |

Jayanta too, mighty as the Creator whirling his discus, whirled that lord of the Daityas about, roaring like a cloud at the end of an aeon.

Verse 60 (skanda.8.86.60)

अथ स्वयं हिरण्याक्षः सोन्धको बलिरेव च । बाणोथ विप्रचित्तिश्च शंबरोथ विरोचनः ।

atha svayaṁ hiraṇyākṣaḥ sondhako balireva ca | bāṇotha vipracittiśca śaṁbarotha virocanaḥ |

Then Hiranyaksha himself, and Andhaka, and Bali, and Bana, and Vipracitti, and Shambara, and Virochana,

Verse 61 (skanda.8.86.61)

कालकेयाश्च ते दैत्याः पौलोमाः सिंहिकासुताः । निवातकवचाश्चैनं समन्तात् पर्यवारयन् ।

kālakeyāśca te daityāḥ paulomāḥ siṁhikāsutāḥ | nivātakavacāścainaṁ samantāt paryavārayan |

and those Daityas the Kalakeyas, the Paulomas, the sons of Simhika, and the Nivatakavachas, surrounded him (Jayanta) on every side.

Verse 62 (skanda.8.86.62)

स तैः शरैर्गदाभिश्च परिघैर्दीघवेधनैः । अन्यैश्च बहुभिश्चित्रैरायुधैः प्रहतो भृशम् ।

sa taiḥ śarairgadābhiśca parighairdīghavedhanaiḥ | anyaiśca bahubhiścitrairāyudhaiḥ prahato bhṛśam |

Struck severely by their arrows, maces, and deep-piercing iron bars, and by many other wondrous weapons,

Verse 63 (skanda.8.86.63)

स हन्यमानस्तं देवो जयन्तः शक्रनन्दनः । हिरण्याक्षपथे क्षिप्त्वा प्राद्रवद् येन देवताः ।

sa hanyamānastaṁ devo jayantaḥ śakranandanaḥ | hiraṇyākṣapathe kṣiptvā prādravad yena devatāḥ |

as he was being struck down, that god Jayanta, son of Indra, flung the Daitya he had been whirling onto the path of Hiranyaksha, and fled to where the other gods stood.
