Verse 1 (skanda.8.89.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । तेषां तद्वेगनुन्नानां भग्नानां क्लिश्यतां पुनः । त्राणार्थमतिदीप्ताक्षो हिरण्याक्षोऽग्रहीत्पदम् ।

sanatkumāra uvāca | teṣāṁ tadveganunnānāṁ bhagnānāṁ kliśyatāṁ punaḥ | trāṇārthamatidīptākṣo hiraṇyākṣo'grahītpadam |

Sanatkumara said: To protect his host, driven back, broken, and suffering afresh, blazing-eyed Hiranyaksha strode forward.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.89.2)

अन्धकश्च महामायो भ्रातरश्चास्य तत्समाः । शतं रथसहस्राणां सर्वेषामपलायिनाम् ।

andhakaśca mahāmāyo bhrātaraścāsya tatsamāḥ | śataṁ rathasahasrāṇāṁ sarveṣāmapalāyinām |

The great sorcerer Andhaka and his brothers, his equals in might, together with a hundred thousand chariots of warriors who would never flee,

Verse 3 (skanda.8.89.3)

प्रह्लादश्च सहभ्राता हिरण्यकशिपोः सुतः । विप्रचितिः सहभ्राता सैंहिकेयैश्च तैस्सह ।

prahlādaśca sahabhrātā hiraṇyakaśipoḥ sutaḥ | vipracitiḥ sahabhrātā saiṁhikeyaiśca taissaha |

Prahlada, son of Hiranyakashipu, with his brothers, Vipracitti with his brothers, and the sons of Simhika,

Verse 4 (skanda.8.89.4)

गृह्ण गृह्णेति नर्दन्तो देवान् प्रत्युद्ययुस्तदा । तेषां तेषां च संग्रामः सुघोरः समपद्यत ।

gṛhṇa gṛhṇeti nardanto devān pratyudyayustadā | teṣāṁ teṣāṁ ca saṁgrāmaḥ sughoraḥ samapadyata |

roaring "Seize them, seize them!" now advanced upon the gods. And a most terrible battle broke out between them once more.

Verse 5 (skanda.8.89.5)

ग्राहाणामिव काण्डे च गजानामिव वा वने । इन्द्रस्त्वष्टा च पूषा च हिरण्याक्षमवारयन् ।

grāhāṇāmiva kāṇḍe ca gajānāmiva vā vane | indrastvaṣṭā ca pūṣā ca hiraṇyākṣamavārayan |

Like crocodiles in a flood, or elephants battling in the forest, Indra, Tvashtar, and Pushan together blocked Hiranyaksha's path.

Verse 6 (skanda.8.89.6)

संगत्य सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैः सर्वमर्मस्वताडयन् । तेषां धनूंषि चित्राणि अस्यतां तु दिवौकसाम् ।

saṁgatya sāyakaistīkṣṇaiḥ sarvamarmasvatāḍayan | teṣāṁ dhanūṁṣi citrāṇi asyatāṁ tu divaukasām |

Closing with him, they struck at all his vital points with sharp arrows. But as those gods loosed their splendid bows,

Verse 7 (skanda.8.89.7)

मायाबलेन दैत्येन्द्रो व्यष्टम्भयत दीप्तिमान् । तानि विष्टम्भितानि स्म तदा दैत्येन मायया ।

māyābalena daityendro vyaṣṭambhayata dīptimān | tāni viṣṭambhitāni sma tadā daityena māyayā |

the radiant lord of the Daityas paralyzed them with the power of his sorcery. By the Daitya's illusion, those bows were struck rigid,

Verse 8 (skanda.8.89.8)

नानमन्ति यथा पूर्वं ततस्ते ह्याकुलाभवन् । सोऽपि दैत्यो महामायो नदित्वा मेघनिस्वनम् ।

nānamanti yathā pūrvaṁ tataste hyākulābhavan | so'pi daityo mahāmāyo naditvā meghanisvanam |

no longer bending as they once had, and the gods were thrown into confusion. That great illusionist Daitya, roaring like a thundercloud,

Verse 9 (skanda.8.89.9)

बबन्ध तेषां गात्राणि समन्तादस्त्रमायया । तान् बद्धाँश्च समीक्ष्यैवमकर्मण्यान् महाबलान् ।

babandha teṣāṁ gātrāṇi samantādastramāyayā | tān baddhāṁśca samīkṣyaivamakarmaṇyān mahābalān |

bound their very limbs on every side with the illusion of his weapons. Seeing those mighty gods thus bound and rendered helpless,

Verse 10 (skanda.8.89.10)

यन्तारो वाहनैः क्षिप्रं जह्रुस्तस्माद्रणाजिरात् । अथ कालो यमश्चैव धनेशो मित्र एव च ।

yantāro vāhanaiḥ kṣipraṁ jahrustasmādraṇājirāt | atha kālo yamaścaiva dhaneśo mitra eva ca |

their charioteers swiftly drew them away, chariots and all, from that battlefield. Then Kala, Yama, Kubera, and Mitra,

Verse 11 (skanda.8.89.11)

वरुणो वसवः सर्वे अश्विनौ च महाबलौ । प्रगृहीतायुधाः क्रुद्धास्तिष्ठतिष्ठेतिवादिनः ।

varuṇo vasavaḥ sarve aśvinau ca mahābalau | pragṛhītāyudhāḥ kruddhāstiṣṭhatiṣṭhetivādinaḥ |

Varuna, all the Vasus, and the mighty Ashvin twins, weapons raised, crying furiously "Stand, stand!",

Verse 12 (skanda.8.89.12)

अभ्यद्रवन्त वेगेन हिरण्याक्षं महासुरम् । तेषामापततां संख्ये स दैत्यः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः ।

abhyadravanta vegena hiraṇyākṣaṁ mahāsuram | teṣāmāpatatāṁ saṁkhye sa daityaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ |

rushed with great speed at the mighty Asura Hiranyaksha. As they charged upon him in battle, that Daitya, blind with rage,

Verse 13 (skanda.8.89.13)

सर्वेषां सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्बिभेद कवचान् युधि । ते भिन्नकवचाः सर्वे क्रोधात् प्रज्वलिताननाः ।

sarveṣāṁ sāyakaistīkṣṇairbibheda kavacān yudhi | te bhinnakavacāḥ sarve krodhāt prajvalitānanāḥ |

pierced the armor of them all with his sharp arrows in that battle. Their armor shattered, their faces blazing with fury,

Verse 14 (skanda.8.89.14)

ससर्जुरस्त्रमुख्यानि तदाप्रतिहतान्युत । यमो दण्डं ससर्जास्य तथा कालश्च ।

sasarjurastramukhyāni tadāpratihatānyuta | yamo daṇḍaṁ sasarjāsya tathā kālaśca |

they hurled their foremost weapons, weapons nothing could withstand. Yama loosed his rod against him, and Kala too [the rest of this line, likely naming Kala's own weapon, is lost in the manuscript].

Verse 15 (skanda.8.89.15)

धनेशश्चाशनिं घोरं वरुणः पाशमेव च । भगश्च मुशलं घोरमन्ये चान्याँस्तथामराः ।

dhaneśaścāśaniṁ ghoraṁ varuṇaḥ pāśameva ca | bhagaśca muśalaṁ ghoramanye cānyāṁstathāmarāḥ |

Kubera hurled his dread thunderbolt, Varuna his noose, Bhaga his terrible club, and the other immortals their own fearsome weapons besides.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.89.16)

तान् स दैत्यो हसन्नेव सायकैर्मर्मभेदिभिः । व्यष्टम्भयददीनात्मा शक्रहस्तं यथा भवः ।

tān sa daityo hasanneva sāyakairmarmabhedibhiḥ | vyaṣṭambhayadadīnātmā śakrahastaṁ yathā bhavaḥ |

All of these that undaunted Daitya, laughing, blocked with vital-point-piercing arrows, just as Lord Shiva once stayed the very hand of Indra.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.89.17)

साधुवादाँस्ततो हृष्टा दानवानां महारथाः । समं चक्रुश्च संपूज्य हिरण्याक्षं महासुरम् ।

sādhuvādāṁstato hṛṣṭā dānavānāṁ mahārathāḥ | samaṁ cakruśca saṁpūjya hiraṇyākṣaṁ mahāsuram |

Then, overjoyed, the great warriors of the Danavas together cried out in acclaim, honoring the mighty Asura Hiranyaksha.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.89.18)

अपरे नैतदाश्चर्यं दितिपुत्रस्य संयुगे । कश्यपेन प्रसूतस्य राज्ञोऽस्माकं च स्वामिनः ।

apare naitadāścaryaṁ ditiputrasya saṁyuge | kaśyapena prasūtasya rājño'smākaṁ ca svāminaḥ |

Others said, "This is no wonder in battle for a son of Diti, born of Kashyapa, who is our king and our lord."

Verse 19 (skanda.8.89.19)

अपरे सिंहनादाँश्च बाहुशब्दाँश्च पुष्कलान् । चक्रुर्हृष्टाश्च वाद्यानि तथा सर्वाण्यवादयन् ।

apare siṁhanādāṁśca bāhuśabdāṁśca puṣkalān | cakrurhṛṣṭāśca vādyāni tathā sarvāṇyavādayan |

Others, overjoyed, let out lion-roars and loud slaps of their arms, and sounded every kind of instrument.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.89.20)

एवं हि संप्रहृष्टानां दानवानां महाहवे । पाराशर्य गिरो बह्व्यः श्रूयन्ते स्तुति ।

evaṁ hi saṁprahṛṣṭānāṁ dānavānāṁ mahāhave | pārāśarya giro bahvyaḥ śrūyante stuti |

Thus, O son of Parashara, in that great battle, many voices could be heard raised in praise of the exultant Danavas [the remainder of this verse is lost in the manuscript].

Verse 21 (skanda.8.89.21)

तेषां प्रहर्षं ज्ञात्वेत्थं देवभंगं च तं तदा । सर्वप्राणिचरो वायुरसुरानभिदुद्रुवे ।

teṣāṁ praharṣaṁ jñātvetthaṁ devabhaṁgaṁ ca taṁ tadā | sarvaprāṇicaro vāyurasurānabhidudruve |

Learning of their exultation and the gods' defeat, Vayu, who moves through every living being, rushed to attack the Asuras.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.89.22)

सहस्रनल्वमात्रेण स रथेन प्रभंजनः । समन्ताद् ध्वजयुक्तेन पताकाशतमालिना ।

sahasranalvamātreṇa sa rathena prabhaṁjanaḥ | samantād dhvajayuktena patākāśatamālinā |

That tempestuous god, mounted on a chariot a thousand nalvas in span, adorned all about with banners and garlanded with a hundred flags,

Verse 23 (skanda.8.89.23)

जवेन यन्तृणां यत्नान्निगृहीतेन शब्दवान् । प्रपूरयन् दिशः सर्वाः सहसा प्रत्यदृश्यत ।

javena yantṛṇāṁ yatnānnigṛhītena śabdavān | prapūrayan diśaḥ sarvāḥ sahasā pratyadṛśyata |

its speed reined in only by the strenuous effort of its drivers, roaring loudly, filling every quarter, suddenly appeared before them.

Verse 24 (skanda.8.89.24)

स पञ्चभिः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्दैत्यराजमथाव्यथः । आहृत्य योजने तस्माद्देशात् क्षिप्रमवासृजत् ।

sa pañcabhiḥ śaraistīkṣṇairdaityarājamathāvyathaḥ | āhṛtya yojane tasmāddeśāt kṣipramavāsṛjat |

Undaunted, he struck the Daitya king with five sharp arrows, dragged him a full yojana from that spot, and then swiftly let him go.

Verse 25 (skanda.8.89.25)

अन्धकश्च ततः षष्ट्या विप्रचित्तिश्च सप्तभिः । मयं पञ्चाशता विद्ध्वा सप्तभिः सप्तभिः पुनः ।

andhakaśca tataḥ ṣaṣṭyā vipracittiśca saptabhiḥ | mayaṁ pañcāśatā viddhvā saptabhiḥ saptabhiḥ punaḥ |

Then he pierced Andhaka with sixty arrows, Vipracitti with seven, and Maya with fifty, and again with seven arrows each,

Verse 26 (skanda.8.89.26)

दैत्याश्च दानवश्चैव सर्वान् विव्याध तत्क्षणात् । पुनः पुलोमपुत्राँश्च निवातकवचानपि ।

daityāśca dānavaścaiva sarvān vivyādha tatkṣaṇāt | punaḥ pulomaputrāṁśca nivātakavacānapi |

pierced all the other Daityas and Danavas at once, and struck the sons of Puloma and the Nivatakavachas as well.

Verse 27 (skanda.8.89.27)

ते तेन बहुभिर्विद्धाः शरैरसुरपुङ्गवाः । दिक्षु सर्वासु विक्षिप्ता योजनान्तरिताः स्थिताः ।

te tena bahubhirviddhāḥ śarairasurapuṅgavāḥ | dikṣu sarvāsu vikṣiptā yojanāntaritāḥ sthitāḥ |

Pierced by his countless arrows, those foremost Asuras were scattered in every direction, driven back to stand a full yojana away.

Verse 28 (skanda.8.89.28)

यान्याँश्च ते विमुञ्चन्ति गदामुशलपट्टिशान् । तान् सर्वान् भगवान् वायुर्दानवोपर्यपातयत् ।

yānyāṁśca te vimuñcanti gadāmuśalapaṭṭiśān | tān sarvān bhagavān vāyurdānavoparyapātayat |

Whatever maces, clubs, and spiked weapons they hurled, Lord Vayu turned every one of them back to fall upon the Danavas themselves.

Verse 29 (skanda.8.89.29)

ते हता हन्यमानाश्च स्वमुक्तैरायुधैर्भृशम् । आर्तनादान् प्रकुर्वाणाः प्राद्रवन्त दिशो दिशः ।

te hatā hanyamānāśca svamuktairāyudhairbhṛśam | ārtanādān prakurvāṇāḥ prādravanta diśo diśaḥ |

Struck down and battered by their own hurled weapons, they screamed in agony and fled in every direction.

Verse 30 (skanda.8.89.30)

सोऽपि वायुर्महावेगो बभञ्ज रथसत्तमान् । पांशुवर्षेण च पुनश्चक्षूंष्येषामपूरयत् ।

so'pi vāyurmahāvego babhañja rathasattamān | pāṁśuvarṣeṇa ca punaścakṣūṁṣyeṣāmapūrayat |

That mighty, swift-moving Vayu shattered their finest chariots as well, and filled their eyes with a driving storm of dust.

Verse 31 (skanda.8.89.31)

ततस्ते भयसन्त्रस्ता नोत्ससर्जुस्तदा शरान् । शस्त्राणि च तथान्यानि युꣳजशश्चावतस्थिरे ।

tataste bhayasantrastā notsasarjustadā śarān | śastrāṇi ca tathānyāni yuꣳjaśaścāvatasthire |

Terrified, they could no longer even loose their arrows, and stood frozen where they were, still grasping their other weapons.

Verse 32 (skanda.8.89.32)

तस्य तत्कर्म संवीक्ष्य हिरण्याक्षः प्रतापवान् । उवाच दानवान् सर्वान् गर्हयन् दितिनन्दनः ।

tasya tatkarma saṁvīkṣya hiraṇyākṣaḥ pratāpavān | uvāca dānavān sarvān garhayan ditinandanaḥ |

Seeing what Vayu had done, the mighty Hiranyaksha, son of Diti, rebuked all the Danavas, saying:

Verse 33 (skanda.8.89.33)

धिग्वो दैत्या बलं सर्वं धिग्दर्पा धिक्पराक्रमाः । विसृज्य रणमव्यग्रा यात स्त्रीकर्म सेवत ।

dhigvo daityā balaṁ sarvaṁ dhigdarpā dhikparākramāḥ | visṛjya raṇamavyagrā yāta strīkarma sevata |

"Shame on all your strength, O Daityas! Shame on your pride, shame on your valor! Go, leave this battlefield unmoved, and take up the tasks of women instead.

Verse 34 (skanda.8.89.34)

ये यूयं रणमध्यस्था जीविते सति बालिशाः । एकेन वायुना भग्ना धिग्वस्तन्मन्त्रितं पुरा ।

ye yūyaṁ raṇamadhyasthā jīvite sati bāliśāḥ | ekena vāyunā bhagnā dhigvastanmantritaṁ purā |

You, standing in the midst of battle, yet like children, routed by Vayu alone while still alive - shame on whatever counsel led you here in the first place!

Verse 35 (skanda.8.89.35)

अथवा यन्मया प्रोक्तं यूयं बाला रतिक्लमाः । तत्तथा नास्ति सन्देहो बालैरिव हि वः कृतम् ।

athavā yanmayā proktaṁ yūyaṁ bālā ratiklamāḥ | tattathā nāsti sandeho bālairiva hi vaḥ kṛtam |

Or rather, what I once said - that you are but children, wearied only by pleasure - is proven true beyond doubt; you have behaved exactly like children.

Verse 36 (skanda.8.89.36)

तिष्ठध्वं बालवत् सर्वे रक्षन्तो जीवितं स्वकम् । अहमेको विजेष्यामि वायुमेनं प्रपश्यत ।

tiṣṭhadhvaṁ bālavat sarve rakṣanto jīvitaṁ svakam | ahameko vijeṣyāmi vāyumenaṁ prapaśyata |

Stand where you are, all of you, like children guarding your own lives; I alone shall conquer this Vayu - just watch."

Verse 37 (skanda.8.89.37)

ततः स पर्वतो भूत्वा दितिपुत्रः प्रतापवान् । समन्ताद् वायुवेगं तं समवारयदव्ययः ।

tataḥ sa parvato bhūtvā ditiputraḥ pratāpavān | samantād vāyuvegaṁ taṁ samavārayadavyayaḥ |

Then that mighty, imperishable son of Diti became a mountain, and on every side he checked the onrushing force of Vayu.

Verse 38 (skanda.8.89.38)

त्वानिलं ज्ञात्वा पर्वतेन निवारितम् । अन्धको बाहुपाशेन अवप्लुत्याबबन्ध तम् ।

tvānilaṁ jñātvā parvatena nivāritam | andhako bāhupāśena avaplutyābabandha tam |

[the opening of this line is lost in the manuscript] ...Learning that the wind-god was thus checked by the mountain, Andhaka leapt upon him and bound him fast with the noose of his arms.

Verse 39 (skanda.8.89.39)

स बद्धो बाहुपाशेन तदा वायुः प्रतापवान् । संप्रगृह्यान्धकं शीघ्रमुत्पपात विहायसा ।

sa baddho bāhupāśena tadā vāyuḥ pratāpavān | saṁpragṛhyāndhakaṁ śīghramutpapāta vihāyasā |

Bound though he was by that arm-noose, the mighty Vayu seized Andhaka in turn and swiftly soared up into the sky.

Verse 40 (skanda.8.89.40)

तस्योत्पतितमात्रस्य प्रगृह्यान्धकदानवम् । राहुर्गदां महारौद्रां क्षिप्रं मूर्ध्नि न्यपातयत् । अभ्येत्य पादयोश्चैव विप्रचितिर्महाबलः ।

tasyotpatitamātrasya pragṛhyāndhakadānavam | rāhurgadāṁ mahāraudrāṁ kṣipraṁ mūrdhni nyapātayat | abhyetya pādayoścaiva vipracitirmahābalaḥ |

The moment he rose into the air, Rahu struck the Danava Andhaka on the head with his most terrible mace, while the mighty Vipracitti rushed up and seized him by both feet.

Verse 41 (skanda.8.89.41)

जग्राह सुमहाग्राहो मत्स्यानिव महार्णवे । स तेन सुप्रहारेण विह्वलः प्राणिगोचरः ।

jagrāha sumahāgrāho matsyāniva mahārṇave | sa tena suprahāreṇa vihvalaḥ prāṇigocaraḥ |

He seized him as a huge sea-monster seizes fish in the great ocean. By that heavy blow, Andhaka reeled, visible to every creature in his distress.

Verse 42 (skanda.8.89.42)

स्कन्धे केशाभिसंयुक्तो भ्रामितो विप्रचित्तिना । स भ्राम्यमाणो विबभौ स्रस्तहारस्रगम्बरः ।

skandhe keśābhisaṁyukto bhrāmito vipracittinā | sa bhrāmyamāṇo vibabhau srastahārasragambaraḥ |

Gripping him by the hair at the shoulder, Vipracitti whirled him about; and as he spun, his necklaces, garlands, and garments streamed loose, a strange and striking sight.

Verse 43 (skanda.8.89.43)

अलातमिव संदीप्तं निशायां मुनिसत्तम । भ्राम्यमाणं समालक्ष्य पुनर्देवाः सवासवाः ।

alātamiva saṁdīptaṁ niśāyāṁ munisattama | bhrāmyamāṇaṁ samālakṣya punardevāḥ savāsavāḥ |

Seeing him whirled about like a firebrand blazing in the night, O best of sages, the gods, with Indra among them, once more

Verse 44 (skanda.8.89.44)

वेगश्चक्रुर्महावेगा गृह्णगृह्णेति वादिनः । विप्रचित्तिस्तु तान् दैत्यः संरब्धानुद्यतायुधान् ।

vegaścakrurmahāvegā gṛhṇagṛhṇeti vādinaḥ | vipracittistu tān daityaḥ saṁrabdhānudyatāyudhān |

rushed forward with tremendous speed, shouting "Seize him, seize him!" But the Daitya Vipracitti, seeing them enraged and weapons raised,

Verse 45 (skanda.8.89.45)

आलक्ष्य सुबहून् संख्ये गर्जमानः पयोदवत् । अभीक्ष्णं भीमसंह्रादं वायुं दानवयूथपः ।

ālakṣya subahūn saṁkhye garjamānaḥ payodavat | abhīkṣṇaṁ bhīmasaṁhrādaṁ vāyuṁ dānavayūthapaḥ |

gazing at that great host bearing down on him in battle, roared like a cloud; and that leader of the Danava army, facing Vayu, terrible in his ceaseless thunder,

Verse 46 (skanda.8.89.46)

चिक्षेप शक्रमुद्दिश्य गिरौ वज्रं यथैव सः । स चापि तेन विक्षिप्तो लब्धसंज्ञो महाबलः ।

cikṣepa śakramuddiśya girau vajraṁ yathaiva saḥ | sa cāpi tena vikṣipto labdhasaṁjño mahābalaḥ |

hurled Andhaka himself straight at Indra, as one might hurl a thunderbolt at a mountain. Flung in that way, the mighty Andhaka regained his senses,

Verse 47 (skanda.8.89.47)

विधाय वेगं देवेन्द्रमुपतस्थे कृताञ्जलिः । ततो वायुश्च देवाश्च सर्व एव सहानुगाः ।

vidhāya vegaṁ devendramupatasthe kṛtāñjaliḥ | tato vāyuśca devāśca sarva eva sahānugāḥ |

and, checking his own momentum, came to stand before Indra with joined palms. Then Vayu and all the gods, together with their attendants,

Verse 48 (skanda.8.89.48)

अभ्यद्रवन्त दैत्येन्द्रान् प्रगृहीतवरायुधाः । तेषां तेषाँश्च संग्रामः सुघोरः समपद्यत ।

abhyadravanta daityendrān pragṛhītavarāyudhāḥ | teṣāṁ teṣāṁśca saṁgrāmaḥ sughoraḥ samapadyata |

weapons raised, charged upon the Daitya lords. And once more a most terrible battle broke out between them.

Verse 49 (skanda.8.89.49)

सिंहानामिव दृप्तानां विजने शरभैः सह । तत्र केचिद्विनिहताः सुप्रहारेण मूर्च्छिताः ।

siṁhānāmiva dṛptānāṁ vijane śarabhaiḥ saha | tatra kecidvinihatāḥ suprahāreṇa mūrcchitāḥ |

as when proud lions do battle with sharabhas in a lonely forest. There some warriors fell struck down, senseless from heavy blows,

Verse 50 (skanda.8.89.50)

साधुसाध्विति भाषन्तः प्राणानूर्ध्वं वितत्यजुः । अपरे दनुदैत्येन्द्रा मुदा युक्ता महाबलाः ।

sādhusādhviti bhāṣantaḥ prāṇānūrdhvaṁ vitatyajuḥ | apare danudaityendrā mudā yuktā mahābalāḥ |

crying "Well fought, well fought!" as their souls departed upward. Others, mighty lords among Danu's Daityas, filled with joy,

Verse 51 (skanda.8.89.51)

परेणाभ्याहतं शूरं समरक्षन् सुपुत्रवत् । केचिद्धत्वापि सुबहून् देवदानवसत्तमाः ।

pareṇābhyāhataṁ śūraṁ samarakṣan suputravat | keciddhatvāpi subahūn devadānavasattamāḥ |

अविक्षताः शितैः शस्त्रैरात्मानं गर्हयन्त्युत । अशस्त्रं केचिदभ्येत्य देवदैत्या महाबलाः ।

avikṣatāḥ śitaiḥ śastrairātmānaṁ garhayantyuta | aśastraṁ kecidabhyetya devadaityā mahābalāḥ |

reproached themselves for remaining unwounded by sharp weapons. Some mighty gods and Daityas, coming forward unarmed,

Verse 53 (skanda.8.89.53)

धर्मयुद्धमभीप्सन्तस्त्यक्त्वा शस्त्राण्ययोधयन् । बह्वस्तत्र दैत्येन्द्रा युयुधुर्भीमविक्रमाः ।

dharmayuddhamabhīpsantastyaktvā śastrāṇyayodhayan | bahvastatra daityendrā yuyudhurbhīmavikramāḥ |

desiring only a fair contest, cast aside their weapons and fought hand to hand; and there many Daitya lords of terrible valor battled on in that fashion.

Verse 54 (skanda.8.89.54)

देवाश्च नाहता ये वै नाभिघ्नन्ति कदाचन । पदातयस्तत्र सर्वे योधयन्ति पदातिभिः ।

devāśca nāhatā ye vai nābhighnanti kadācana | padātayastatra sarve yodhayanti padātibhiḥ |

The gods who remained unwounded never struck an unarmed foe; there, all the foot-soldiers fought only against foot-soldiers,

Verse 55 (skanda.8.89.55)

सादिनः सादिभिः सार्धं रथिनो रथिभिः सह । गजिनो गजिभिश्चैव तथा युद्धमवर्तत ।

sādinaḥ sādibhiḥ sārdhaṁ rathino rathibhiḥ saha | gajino gajibhiścaiva tathā yuddhamavartata |

horsemen against horsemen, charioteers against charioteers, and riders of elephants against riders of elephants - so the battle proceeded, each in fair contest with his equal.

Verse 56 (skanda.8.89.56)

एवं तेषां हि संग्रामो देवानां दानवैस्सह । आवर्तत शतान्यष्टौ वर्षाणि सुमहाभयः ।

evaṁ teṣāṁ hi saṁgrāmo devānāṁ dānavaissaha | āvartata śatānyaṣṭau varṣāṇi sumahābhayaḥ |

In this way that most terrible battle between the gods and the Danavas raged on for eight hundred years.

Verse 57 (skanda.8.89.57)

अथ दैत्यो महामायो गजेनाम्बुदवर्चसा । तोमरं सुमहद् बिभ्रद्युगान्तानलवर्चसम् ।

atha daityo mahāmāyo gajenāmbudavarcasā | tomaraṁ sumahad bibhradyugāntānalavarcasam |

Then the great illusionist Daitya Virochana, mounted on an elephant dark as a raincloud, wielding a massive lance blazing like the fire of universal dissolution,

कोकिलाञ्जनमेघाभो विद्रुतो यो विरोचनः । सोऽभ्यद्रवत्तदा देवानतिसव्यानिवोत्थितान् ।

kokilāñjanameghābho vidruto yo virocanaḥ | so'bhyadravattadā devānatisavyānivotthitān |

dark as the collyrium-black kokila bird, gleaming like a storm-cloud, that swift Virochana now charged at the gods massed to one side, rising up as if from nowhere.

Verse 59 (skanda.8.89.59)

स गजेन प्रभिन्नेन मुखाडम्बरघोषिणा । अभिदुद्राव देवेन्द्रं तिष्ठतिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ।

sa gajena prabhinnena mukhāḍambaraghoṣiṇā | abhidudrāva devendraṁ tiṣṭhatiṣṭheti cābravīt |

Mounted on that elephant in rut, its trumpeting roar filling the air, he charged straight at the lord of the gods, crying "Stand, stand!"

Verse 60 (skanda.8.89.60)

तस्यापतत एवाथ भगवान् पाकशासनः । जत्रुदेशे शरं घोरं निचखान ररास च ।

tasyāpatata evātha bhagavān pākaśāsanaḥ | jatrudeśe śaraṁ ghoraṁ nicakhāna rarāsa ca |

As Virochana rushed upon him, Lord Indra plunged a terrible arrow deep into his collarbone and roared aloud.

Verse 61 (skanda.8.89.61)

अनुभूय प्रहारं तं स दैत्यो भीमविक्रमः । तस्यास्य तोमरेणाथ बिभेद करमुन्नतम् ।

anubhūya prahāraṁ taṁ sa daityo bhīmavikramaḥ | tasyāsya tomareṇātha bibheda karamunnatam |

Enduring that blow, the Daitya of fearsome valor then struck Indra's upraised arm with his lance.

Verse 62 (skanda.8.89.62)

अथास्य तोमरोद्भिन्नाद्धस्ताद्धेमविभूषितात् । पपात तद्धनुर्दिव्यं महाशनिसमप्रभम् ।

athāsya tomarodbhinnāddhastāddhemavibhūṣitāt | papāta taddhanurdivyaṁ mahāśanisamaprabham |

From his gold-adorned hand, pierced by that lance, fell his divine bow, radiant as a great thunderbolt.

Verse 63 (skanda.8.89.63)

ततोऽस्य भूयो दैत्येन्द्रो व्याकुलस्य तदा गजम् । तोमरेण बिभेदाशु कुम्भदेशे महाबलः ।

tato'sya bhūyo daityendro vyākulasya tadā gajam | tomareṇa bibhedāśu kumbhadeśe mahābalaḥ |

Then that mighty lord of the Daityas swiftly struck the temples of Indra's own troubled elephant with his lance.

Verse 64 (skanda.8.89.64)

स भिन्नस्तेन दैत्येन वने मत्त इव द्विपः । अनङ्कुशः शनैर्घृ स्वं बलं ह्यनिवारितः ।

sa bhinnastena daityena vane matta iva dvipaḥ | anaṅkuśaḥ śanairghṛ svaṁ balaṁ hyanivāritaḥ |

Pierced by that Daitya, the elephant, like a wild tusker gone rogue in the forest, its mahout's goad lost, slowly [the middle of this line is lost in the manuscript] ran on unchecked in its own fury. A full line following this verse is entirely lost in the manuscript and has therefore been omitted here.

Verse 65 (skanda.8.89.65)

ते तथा वध्यमानास्तु आदित्या दैत्यदानवैः । भयार्दिता दिशः सर्वाः पलायन्ते स्म सर्वशः ।

te tathā vadhyamānāstu ādityā daityadānavaiḥ | bhayārditā diśaḥ sarvāḥ palāyante sma sarvaśaḥ |

Thus struck down by the Daityas and Danavas, the Adityas, overcome with terror, fled in every direction, on every side.

Verse 66 (skanda.8.89.66)

ततः शंखाश्च भेर्यश्च वाद्यानि विविधान्यपि । सिंहनादाँश्च सञ्चक्रुर्दैत्यदानवसंमताः ।

tataḥ śaṁkhāśca bheryaśca vādyāni vividhānyapi | siṁhanādāṁśca sañcakrurdaityadānavasaṁmatāḥ |

Then conches, war-drums, and instruments of every kind [the middle of this line is lost in the manuscript] sounded forth, and warriors honored among the Daityas and Danavas let out lion-roars.

Verse 67 (skanda.8.89.67)

तच्छिन्नभिन्नप्रविदारितान्तरं गजेन दैत्यैश्च पुनर्विलोडितम् । बलं महद्दैवतपालितं बभौ यथार्णवो मन्दरमन्थविक्षतः ।

tacchinnabhinnapravidāritāntaraṁ gajena daityaiśca punarviloḍitam | balaṁ mahaddaivatapālitaṁ babhau yathārṇavo mandaramanthavikṣataḥ |

Thus cut, torn, and rent apart, and churned yet again by elephants and Daityas, that great army protected by the gods now resembled the ocean, roiled by the churning of Mount Mandara.
