The Going to Varuna's Abode

Verse 1 (skanda.8.93.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथासौ तेन कालेन केतुरग्नेः समुत्थितः । वायुनाभिहतश्चैव अगच्छद् विलयं भृशम्

sanatkumāra uvāca | athāsau tena kālena keturagneḥ samutthitaḥ | vāyunābhihataścaiva agacchad vilayaṁ bhṛśam

Sanatkumara said: Then, at that time, that banner of smoke which had risen from the Fire, being struck by the wind, utterly dissolved away.

Verse 2 (skanda.8.93.2)

ततः समभवद् व्योम विमलं सर्वमेव हि । अपश्यन्त सुरास्सर्वे दैत्याश्चैव परस्परम्

tataḥ samabhavad vyoma vimalaṁ sarvameva hi | apaśyanta surāssarve daityāścaiva parasparam

Then the entire sky became perfectly clear, and all the gods and the Daityas could see one another once more.

Verse 3 (skanda.8.93.3)

ततः शंखाश्च भेर्यश्च पटहाडम्बरास्तथा । सुघोषका डिण्डिमाश्च भग्ना भेर्यश्च सर्वशः

tataḥ śaṁkhāśca bheryaśca paṭahāḍambarāstathā | sughoṣakā ḍiṇḍimāśca bhagnā bheryaśca sarvaśaḥ

Then conches and kettledrums, war-drums and battle-drums, sweet-sounding tabors and small drums resounded, and on every side kettledrums shattered too.

Verse 4 (skanda.8.93.4)

बलद्वयेप्यवाद्यन्त शतशोथ सहस्रशः । अथ शक्रश्च देवेन्द्रो यमो वैश्रवणस्तथा

baladvayepyavādyanta śataśotha sahasraśaḥ | atha śakraśca devendro yamo vaiśravaṇastathā

In both armies they resounded by the hundreds and the thousands. Then Shakra, lord of the gods, Yama, and Vaishravana (Kubera) -

Verse 5 (skanda.8.93.5)

पूषा भगश्च द्वावेतौ अर्यमा मित्र एव च । जयन्तो मरुतश्चैव रुद्रादित्याश्च सर्वशः

pūṣā bhagaśca dvāvetau aryamā mitra eva ca | jayanto marutaścaiva rudrādityāśca sarvaśaḥ

- Pusha and Bhaga, these two, Aryaman and Mitra, Jayanta, the Maruts, and all the Rudras and Adityas -

Verse 6 (skanda.8.93.6)

वेगेन सुमहावेगा ममृदुर्दानवं बलम् । तत्र चामीकराभासं प्रगृह्य बलवद्धनुः

vegena sumahāvegā mamṛdurdānavaṁ balam | tatra cāmīkarābhāsaṁ pragṛhya balavaddhanuḥ

- of tremendous speed, crushed the army of the Danavas with great force; and there, taking up his powerful, gold-gleaming bow -

Verse 7 (skanda.8.93.7)

यमो दण्डेन दैत्येन्द्राननयद्यमसादनम् । स पञ्चभिः शरैर्विद्ध्वा हिरण्याक्षं महाबलम्

yamo daṇḍena daityendrānanayadyamasādanam | sa pañcabhiḥ śarairviddhvā hiraṇyākṣaṁ mahābalam

- Yama, with his staff, sent the lords of the Daityas to his own abode. Having pierced the mighty Hiranyaksha with five arrows -

Verse 8 (skanda.8.93.8)

अश्वाँश्चैकैकशः सर्वान् जहास च ननाद च । तस्य सर्वे तदायस्ता दैत्यदानवसत्तमाः

aśvā~ścaikaikaśaḥ sarvān jahāsa ca nanāda ca | tasya sarve tadāyastā daityadānavasattamāḥ

- struck down all his horses one by one, and he laughed, and he roared. Then, striving hard for his sake, all the foremost Daityas and Danavas -

Verse 9 (skanda.8.93.9)

शरानाशीविषाकारान् व्यसृजन् विकृताशनान् । तान् स चिच्छेद समरे त्रिधैकैकं लघुक्रियः

śarānāśīviṣākārān vyasṛjan vikṛtāśanān | tān sa ciccheda samare tridhaikaikaṁ laghukriyaḥ

- let loose arrows dreadful as venomous serpents and terrible of aspect; but he, swift of hand, cut each of them into three pieces in that battle.

Verse 10 (skanda.8.93.10)

पुनश्च विशिखैर्घोरैरर्दयत् प्रहसन्निव । ततोन्धकस्य यन्तारं रथञ्च सहवाजिभिः

punaśca viśikhairghorairardayat prahasanniva | tatondhakasya yantāraṁ rathañca sahavājibhiḥ

And again, as though laughing, he tormented them with terrible shafts; then Andhaka's charioteer, and his chariot together with its horses -

Verse 11 (skanda.8.93.11)

किंकरेण महावीर्यो यमो निन्ये स्वकं पुरम् । ततोन्धको गदापाणिर्युगान्ताम्बुदवन्नदन्

kiṁkareṇa mahāvīryo yamo ninye svakaṁ puram | tatondhako gadāpāṇiryugāntāmbudavannadan

- the mighty Yama had led away by his servant to his own city. Then Andhaka, mace in hand, roaring like the clouds of universal dissolution -

Verse 12 (skanda.8.93.12)

अभ्यधावद्यमं तूर्णमतिष्ठतिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् । तस्य वज्रेण देवेन्द्रो गदां हेमपरिष्कृताम्

abhyadhāvadyamaṁ tūrṇamatiṣṭhatiṣṭheti cābravīt | tasya vajreṇa devendro gadāṁ hemapariṣkṛtām

- rushed swiftly at Yama, crying, "Stand! Stand!" Then the lord of the gods, with his thunderbolt, struck his gold-adorned mace -

Verse 13 (skanda.8.93.13)

बिभेद शतधा व्यास सापतद् भुव्यवस्थिता । तं विशस्त्रं विकवचं कृत्वा ते देवसत्तमाः

bibheda śatadhā vyāsa sāpatad bhuvyavasthitā | taṁ viśastraṁ vikavacaṁ kṛtvā te devasattamāḥ

- and shattered it into a hundred pieces, O Vyasa, so that it fell and lay upon the ground. Having thus made him weaponless and stripped of armour, those foremost gods -

Verse 14 (skanda.8.93.14)

युगपच्छस्त्रवर्षेण ताडयामासुराहवे । यमो दण्डेन तं मूर्ध्नि शक्रो वज्रेण चाहनत्

yugapacchastravarṣeṇa tāḍayāmāsurāhave | yamo daṇḍena taṁ mūrdhni śakro vajreṇa cāhanat

- struck him all at once with a shower of weapons in that battle; Yama struck him on the head with his staff, and Shakra with his thunderbolt,

Verse 15 (skanda.8.93.15)

वित्तेशोऽशनिना चैव पाशेन वरुणस्तथा । अन्ये चान्यैस्तथा देवा ह्यमोघैरायुधोत्तमैः

vitteśo'śaninā caiva pāśena varuṇastathā | anye cānyaistathā devā hyamoghairāyudhottamaiḥ

the Lord of Wealth (Kubera) with his mace, and Varuna likewise with his noose, and the other gods too, each with their own unfailing, foremost weapons.

Verse 16 (skanda.8.93.16)

अभ्यधावन्नसंरब्धा हतस्त्वमिति वादिनः । न चैव तस्य दैत्यस्य दुःखं तत्राभवत्तदा

abhyadhāvannasaṁrabdhā hatastvamiti vādinaḥ | na caiva tasya daityasya duḥkhaṁ tatrābhavattadā

Unrestrained, they rushed upon him, crying, "You are slain!" And yet no distress whatsoever befell that Daitya then.

Verse 17 (skanda.8.93.17)

सोपि दैत्यस्ततोत्पत्य पुण्डस्यास्थाय पृष्ठतः । यमं मुष्टिप्रहारेण पुण्डाद् भूमावपातयत्

sopi daityastatotpatya puṇḍasyāsthāya pṛṣṭhataḥ | yamaṁ muṣṭiprahāreṇa puṇḍād bhūmāvapātayat

That Daitya too, then leaping up, mounted upon the back of Punda [Yama's elephant], and with a blow of his fist struck Yama down from Punda's back to the ground.

Verse 18 (skanda.8.93.18)

तथेन्द्रस्य गजं भूयो पुच्छे संगृह्य वेगवान् । भ्रामयित्वाक्षिपद् दूरे नष्टस्त्वमिति चाब्रवीत्

tathendrasya gajaṁ bhūyo pucche saṁgṛhya vegavān | bhrāmayitvākṣipad dūre naṣṭastvamiti cābravīt

Then, swift of motion, he seized Indra's elephant likewise by the tail, whirled it round, and hurled it far away, crying, "Now you are destroyed!"

Verse 19 (skanda.8.93.19)

ततो धनेशस्य पुनः शिविकां कामगामिनीम् । आक्षिप्य बहुधा दैत्यो व्यधमत् क्रोधमूर्छितः

tato dhaneśasya punaḥ śivikāṁ kāmagāminīm | ākṣipya bahudhā daityo vyadhamat krodhamūrchitaḥ

Then again the Daitya, overcome with fury, seized the wish-moving palanquin of the Lord of Wealth (Kubera) and smashed it to many pieces.

Verse 20 (skanda.8.93.20)

ततो गजैर्गजान् निघ्नत् पदातीँश्च पदातिभिः । रथं रथेन च रणे हयाँश्च हयसादिभिः

tato gajairgajān nighnat padātī~śca padātibhiḥ | rathaṁ rathena ca raṇe hayā~śca hayasādibhiḥ

Then in that battle elephants struck down elephants, footmen struck down footmen, chariot met chariot, and horsemen struck down horses.

Verse 21 (skanda.8.93.21)

पुनर्गजे महेन्द्रस्य हन्यमानोपि संयुगे । समुत्प्लुत्य तदा शक्रं गजस्कन्धान्न्यपातयत्

punargaje mahendrasya hanyamānopi saṁyuge | samutplutya tadā śakraṁ gajaskandhānnyapātayat

Though repeatedly struck upon great Indra's elephant in that combat, he then leapt up and hurled Shakra down from the elephant's shoulder.

Verse 22 (skanda.8.93.22)

तस्य तत् कर्म संवीक्ष्य दानवेन्द्रस्य संयुगे । सर्वे देवा दिशः सर्वाः प्रनष्टा जीवितार्थिनः

tasya tat karma saṁvīkṣya dānavendrasya saṁyuge | sarve devā diśaḥ sarvāḥ pranaṣṭā jīvitārthinaḥ

Beholding that feat of the lord of the Danavas in the battle, all the gods, desiring to save their lives, fled away in every direction.

Verse 23 (skanda.8.93.23)

पूर्वेण भगवानिन्द्रः सहादित्यः सलोकपः । दक्षिणेन तथा रुद्रा वसवश्चाश्विनावपि

pūrveṇa bhagavānindraḥ sahādityaḥ salokapaḥ | dakṣiṇena tathā rudrā vasavaścāśvināvapi

To the east fled the blessed Indra, together with the Adityas and the guardians of the quarters; to the south fled the Rudras, the Vasus, and the two Ashvins as well;

Verse 24 (skanda.8.93.24)

प्रतीचीं यक्षरक्षांसि पिशाचाः पन्नगैः सह । उत्तरेण तथान्ये च प्रपद्यन्त यथा मृगाः

pratīcīṁ yakṣarakṣāṁsi piśācāḥ pannagaiḥ saha | uttareṇa tathānye ca prapadyanta yathā mṛgāḥ

To the west fled the Yakshas and Rakshasas, the Pishachas together with the serpents; and to the north the rest fled likewise, like startled deer.

Verse 25 (skanda.8.93.25)

तेषु भग्नेषु दैत्येन्द्राः पृष्ठतो विकृतायुधाः । अभ्यधावन्त गर्जन्तो भयं तेषां व्यदर्शयन्

teṣu bhagneṣu daityendrāḥ pṛṣṭhato vikṛtāyudhāḥ | abhyadhāvanta garjanto bhayaṁ teṣāṁ vyadarśayan

When they had thus been routed, the lords of the Daityas, with their fearsome weapons, charged after them roaring, striking terror into them.

Verse 26 (skanda.8.93.26)

ततो मुहूर्त्तं ते गत्वा हिरण्याक्षेण वारिताः । निवृत्ताः समतिष्ठन्त सर्वेऽमर्षवशं गताः

tato muhūrttaṁ te gatvā hiraṇyākṣeṇa vāritāḥ | nivṛttāḥ samatiṣṭhanta sarve'marṣavaśaṁ gatāḥ

Then, having pursued for a moment, they were restrained by Hiranyaksha; they turned back and stood still, all of them still in the grip of fury.

Verse 27 (skanda.8.93.27)

अथोवाच ततः क्रुद्धान् हिरण्याक्षो हसन्निव । दैत्यदानवनाथाँस्तानिदं वचनकोविदः

athovāca tataḥ kruddhān hiraṇyākṣo hasanniva | daityadānavanāthā~stānidaṁ vacanakovidaḥ

Then Hiranyaksha, skilled in speech, smiling as it were, spoke thus to those enraged lords of the Daityas and Danavas -

Verse 28 (skanda.8.93.28)

किमेभिरबलैरद्य युष्माकं दैत्यदानवाः । अवबद्धैश्च रुद्धैश्च मृतसंज्ञैर्दुरात्मभिः

kimebhirabalairadya yuṣmākaṁ daityadānavāḥ | avabaddhaiśca ruddhaiśca mṛtasaṁjñairdurātmabhiḥ

"O Daityas and Danavas, what use to you today are these powerless ones - bound, checked, and evil-souled as they are, as good as dead already?"

Verse 29 (skanda.8.93.29)

हतास्ते नात्र सन्देहो येषां राज्यमिदं धृतम् । नैषां जीवितमद्यास्ति मा त्वरध्वं सुबालिशाः

hatāste nātra sandeho yeṣāṁ rājyamidaṁ dhṛtam | naiṣāṁ jīvitamadyāsti mā tvaradhvaṁ subāliśāḥ

"Those whose kingdom this now is - they are as good as slain, there is no doubt of it; their life no longer remains. Do not be so hasty, O simple ones."

Verse 30 (skanda.8.93.30)

अबलानपि संरब्धान्निराशान् जीवितैषिणः । अवद्ध्येति बलाच्चैव दुर्जयाश्च न संशयः

abalānapi saṁrabdhānnirāśān jīvitaiṣiṇaḥ | avaddhyeti balāccaiva durjayāśca na saṁśayaḥ

"Even the powerless, when enraged and bereft of hope yet still clinging to life, should not be slain by mere force - beyond doubt, such become unconquerable."

Verse 31 (skanda.8.93.31)

यदेतद्राज्यमित्याहुः प्राणा ह्येते महात्मनाम् । स तेषां हरति प्राणान् यस्तेषां राज्यमाहरेत्

yadetadrājyamityāhuḥ prāṇā hyete mahātmanām | sa teṣāṁ harati prāṇān yasteṣāṁ rājyamāharet

"That which men call a kingdom - this is indeed the very life-breath of great souls; he who seizes their kingdom takes away their life-breath itself."

Verse 32 (skanda.8.93.32)

आपूरयाम स्थानानि देवानां दानवेश्वराः

āpūrayāma sthānāni devānāṁ dānaveśvarāḥ

"Let us, O lords of the Danavas, now fill up [and occupy] the abodes of the gods!" - the opening portion of this verse is lost in the source manuscript.

Verse 33 (skanda.8.93.33)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततस्ते सहिरण्याक्षाः प्राविशन्नमरावतीम् । रत्नानि जगृहुर्व्यास विजयं चावघोषयन्

sanatkumāra uvāca | tataste sahiraṇyākṣāḥ prāviśannamarāvatīm | ratnāni jagṛhurvyāsa vijayaṁ cāvaghoṣayan

Sanatkumara said: Then they, together with Hiranyaksha, entered Amaravati; they seized its jewels, O Vyasa, and proclaimed their victory.

Verse 34 (skanda.8.93.34)

आरक्षमामनुस्तत्र चक्षुराप्तैश्च तेऽसुराः । आश्वासयन्त पौरांश्च तथा प्रकृतयश्च ह

ārakṣamāmanustatra cakṣurāptaiśca te'surāḥ | āśvāsayanta paurāṁśca tathā prakṛtayaśca ha

There those Asuras set trusted men to keep watch, and reassured the citizens and the subjects as well.

Verse 35 (skanda.8.93.35)

तथार्घेण तथैवोपायनैर्वरैः । आशीर्भिश्चासुरश्रेष्ठं हिरण्याक्षं प्रणेमिरे

tathārgheṇa tathaivopāyanairvaraiḥ | āśīrbhiścāsuraśreṣṭhaṁ hiraṇyākṣaṁ praṇemire

And with ceremonial water-offerings, and likewise with fine gifts and with blessings, they bowed before Hiranyaksha, foremost of the Asuras - the opening portion of this verse is lost in the source manuscript.

Verse 36 (skanda.8.93.36)

तान् समाश्वास्य दैत्येन्द्रो ह्यध्यस्य च वरासनम् । कार्याणि कृत्वा सर्वेषामगच्छद् वरुणालयम्

tān samāśvāsya daityendro hyadhyasya ca varāsanam | kāryāṇi kṛtvā sarveṣāmagacchad varuṇālayam

Having reassured them, and having taken his seat upon a noble throne, and having settled the affairs of all, the lord of the Daityas then set out for the abode of Varuna.

Verse 37 (skanda.8.93.37)

ते सिंहनादैर्विविधैश्च वाद्यैः प्रवल्गनास्फोटितकूजितैश्च । महासुरा दानवराजसिंहं जग्मुस्समन्तात् परिवार्य सर्वे

te siṁhanādairvividhaiśca vādyaiḥ pravalganāsphoṭitakūjitaiśca | mahāsurā dānavarājasiṁhaṁ jagmussamantāt parivārya sarve

With lion-roars and with manifold instruments, with leaping and bounding, with clapping and cries, all those great Asuras went forth together, surrounding on every side that lion among the kings of the Danavas.
