Varaha's Journey to Varuna's Abode
Verse 1 (skanda.8.98.1)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथ ते सुरशार्दूलास्तस्य रूपं प्रचक्रिरे । सप्तलोकमयं तस्य शरीरं चक्रुरीश्वराः
sanatkumāra uvāca | atha te suraśārdūlāstasya rūpaṁ pracakrire | saptalokamayaṁ tasya śarīraṁ cakrurīśvarāḥ
Sanatkumara said: Then those tigers among the gods began to fashion his form - a line of this verse is lost in the source manuscript - those lords made his body composed of the seven worlds.
Verse 2 (skanda.8.98.2)
अस्थीनि पर्वताः सर्वे नद्यो नाड्यश्च तस्य तु । रुधिरं चाब्धयः सप्त कफपित्तानिला गुणाः
asthīni parvatāḥ sarve nadyo nāḍyaśca tasya tu | rudhiraṁ cābdhayaḥ sapta kaphapittānilā guṇāḥ
All the mountains became his bones, the rivers became his veins; the seven oceans became his blood, and phlegm, bile, and wind became his bodily humours.
Verse 3 (skanda.8.98.3)
पुरीषं चाप्योषधयो धर्मो रेतः कृतोस्य तु । मूत्रं तस्याभवन्मेघा वायवः सप्त कोष्ठगाः
purīṣaṁ cāpyoṣadhayo dharmo retaḥ kṛtosya tu | mūtraṁ tasyābhavanmeghā vāyavaḥ sapta koṣṭhagāḥ
Herbs became his excrement, and Dharma was made his semen; the clouds became his urine, and the seven winds took their place within his belly.
Verse 4 (skanda.8.98.4)
शिरस्तस्याभवन् साध्या रुद्रो मूर्धानमास्थितः । ललाटे तस्य धर्मोभूत् नासिका वायुरात्मवान्
śirastasyābhavan sādhyā rudro mūrdhānamāsthitaḥ | lalāṭe tasya dharmobhūt nāsikā vāyurātmavān
The Sadhya gods became his head, and Rudra took his place at the crown; Dharma became his forehead, and the self-possessed Wind became his nose.
Verse 5 (skanda.8.98.5)
सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ नेत्रे श्रोत्रे तस्य दिशोभवन् । भ्रुवोस्तस्याभवन् प्राणा अहोरात्रं च पक्ष्मणी
sūryācandramasau netre śrotre tasya diśobhavan | bhruvostasyābhavan prāṇā ahorātraṁ ca pakṣmaṇī
The Sun and Moon became his two eyes, and the directions became his ears; the vital breaths became his eyebrows, and Day and Night his eyelashes.
Verse 6 (skanda.8.98.6)
आस्यं तस्याग्निरभवत् वडवा मुखसंस्थिता । ओष्ठेभूदन्तरिक्षं च दन्ताश्च भुजगाभवन्
āsyaṁ tasyāgnirabhavat vaḍavā mukhasaṁsthitā | oṣṭhebhūdantarikṣaṁ ca dantāśca bhujagābhavan
Fire became his mouth, with the submarine mare-fire seated within it; the atmosphere became his lips, and serpents became his teeth.
Verse 7 (skanda.8.98.7)
चत्वार्यस्त्राणि दंष्ट्राश्च कृतानि सुमहान्ति वै । अस्त्रं पाशुपतं पूर्वं द्वितीयं चक्रमेव च
catvāryastrāṇi daṁṣṭrāśca kṛtāni sumahānti vai | astraṁ pāśupataṁ pūrvaṁ dvitīyaṁ cakrameva ca
Four exceedingly great weapons were made his tusks: the first, the Pashupata weapon; and the second, the discus itself;
Verse 8 (skanda.8.98.8)
ब्रह्मदण्डं तृतीयञ्च चतुर्थं ब्रह्मणः शिरः । ग्रीवा तस्याभवत्सोमो रुद्रः स्कन्धे च संस्थितः
brahmadaṇḍaṁ tṛtīyañca caturthaṁ brahmaṇaḥ śiraḥ | grīvā tasyābhavatsomo rudraḥ skandhe ca saṁsthitaḥ
the third, the staff of Brahma; and the fourth, the head of Brahma. The Moon became his neck, and Rudra took his place upon his shoulder.
Verse 9 (skanda.8.98.9)
गण्डे चापि तथादित्या हस्तौ रुद्रैश्च निर्मितौ । अंगुल्यस्तस्य कीर्तिश्च लक्ष्मीः सिद्धिस्तथैव च
gaṇḍe cāpi tathādityā hastau rudraiśca nirmitau | aṁgulyastasya kīrtiśca lakṣmīḥ siddhistathaiva ca
The Adityas became his cheeks, and his two hands were fashioned by the Rudras; Fame, Lakshmi, and likewise Siddhi became his fingers.
Verse 10 (skanda.8.98.10)
प्रवृत्तिश्च नखाश्चास्त्राणि सर्वशः । यमदण्डः कालदण्डो मृत्युदण्डस्तथैव च
pravṛttiśca nakhāścāstrāṇi sarvaśaḥ | yamadaṇḍaḥ kāladaṇḍo mṛtyudaṇḍastathaiva ca
- the opening of this line is lost in the source manuscript - and Pravritti (the active tendency) - his nails became weapons of every kind: the staff of Yama, the staff of Time, and likewise the staff of Death.
Verse 11 (skanda.8.98.11)
रुद्रदण्डश्च चत्वारो बाहुपादाः कृताः प्रभोः । साध्या देवा उरस्तस्य हृदयं सोम इत्यपि
rudradaṇḍaśca catvāro bāhupādāḥ kṛtāḥ prabhoḥ | sādhyā devā urastasya hṛdayaṁ soma ityapi
- and the staff of Rudra: these four became that lord's arms and legs. The Sadhya gods became his chest, and likewise the Moon became his heart.
Verse 12 (skanda.8.98.12)
उदरं तस्य भूतानि महान्ति ऋषिसत्तम । नाभिस्तस्याभवन्माता अदितिर्ब्रह्मसत्तम
udaraṁ tasya bhūtāni mahānti ṛṣisattama | nābhistasyābhavanmātā aditirbrahmasattama
O best of sages, the great elements became his belly; O best of brahmins, his mother Aditi became his navel.
Verse 13 (skanda.8.98.13)
शिश्नं प्रजापतिस्तस्य मित्रोपानेभवत् स्थितः । वसवस्तस्य पार्श्वेषु तथा धर्मश्च पृष्ठतः
śiśnaṁ prajāpatistasya mitropānebhavat sthitaḥ | vasavastasya pārśveṣu tathā dharmaśca pṛṣṭhataḥ
Prajapati became his generative organ, and Mitra took his place close by; the Vasus became his flanks, and Dharma likewise became his back.
Verse 14 (skanda.8.98.14)
मृत्युः कालो यमश्चैव हस्तपादतलाश्रिताः । अश्विनौ तस्य लाङ्गूलं पितरः सन्धिषु स्थिताः
mṛtyuḥ kālo yamaścaiva hastapādatalāśritāḥ | aśvinau tasya lāṅgūlaṁ pitaraḥ sandhiṣu sthitāḥ
Death, Time, and Yama took their place in the palms of his hands and the soles of his feet; the two Ashvins became his tail, and the Pitris stood at his joints.
Verse 15 (skanda.8.98.15)
नियतिः कालपाशश्च कृतान्तकलहावपि । व्याधयश्चापि ये केचिद् दृष्टिं तस्य समाश्रिताः
niyatiḥ kālapāśaśca kṛtāntakalahāvapi | vyādhayaścāpi ye kecid dṛṣṭiṁ tasya samāśritāḥ
Destiny, and the noose of Time, along with Death's decree and Strife, and whatever diseases there were - all of these took refuge in his gaze.
Verse 16 (skanda.8.98.16)
यक्षाश्च राक्षसाश्चैव गन्धर्वाः पन्नगैः सहः । सर्वे त्वचं समाश्रित्य संहताः समवस्थिताः
yakṣāśca rākṣasāścaiva gandharvāḥ pannagaiḥ sahaḥ | sarve tvacaṁ samāśritya saṁhatāḥ samavasthitāḥ
Yakshas and Rakshasas, Gandharvas together with serpents - all of these, taking refuge in his skin, stood there gathered together.
Verse 17 (skanda.8.98.17)
तथा सर्वाणि छन्दांसि वेदा इष्टय एव च । रोमकूपेषु सर्वाणि तानि तस्थुः पृथक् पृथक्
tathā sarvāṇi chandāṁsi vedā iṣṭaya eva ca | romakūpeṣu sarvāṇi tāni tasthuḥ pṛthak pṛthak
Likewise all the metres, the Vedas, and the sacrifices themselves - all of these stood, each in its own place, within the pores of his hair.
Verse 18 (skanda.8.98.18)
दानानि नियमाश्चैव यमाः सर्वाश्च मातरः । स्थानाभिमानिनो देवाः पशवः पक्षिणश्च ह
dānāni niyamāścaiva yamāḥ sarvāśca mātaraḥ | sthānābhimānino devāḥ paśavaḥ pakṣiṇaśca ha
Acts of giving, observances, restraints, and all the Mother-goddesses, the presiding deities of sacred places, beasts and birds -
Verse 19 (skanda.8.98.19)
सर्वे रोमाणि तस्यासन् वराहस्य महात्मनः । अङ्गुल्यस्तस्य पादाभ्यां विश्वेदेवाभवँस्तथा
sarve romāṇi tasyāsan varāhasya mahātmanaḥ | aṅgulyastasya pādābhyāṁ viśvedevābhava~stathā
- all of these became the hairs of that great-souled Boar; and the Vishvedevas likewise became the toes of his two feet.
Verse 20 (skanda.8.98.20)
भृगवोंगिरसश्चैव देवास्तस्याभवंस्तदा । रोमान्तरेषु ऋषयः सर्वेष्वङ्गेषु संस्थिताः
bhṛgavoṁgirasaścaiva devāstasyābhavaṁstadā | romāntareṣu ṛṣayaḥ sarveṣvaṅgeṣu saṁsthitāḥ
The Bhrigus and Angirasas, and the gods, became part of him then; the sages took their place among the hair-pores, throughout all his limbs.
Verse 21 (skanda.8.98.21)
एवं समभवद् व्यास वराहो नन्दिवर्धनः । स भाति तेन रूपेण द्यां भुवञ्चापि संस्पृशन्
evaṁ samabhavad vyāsa varāho nandivardhanaḥ | sa bhāti tena rūpeṇa dyāṁ bhuvañcāpi saṁspṛśan
Thus, O Vyasa, the Boar Nandivardhana, the increaser of joy, came into being; in that form he shone, touching both heaven and earth.
Verse 22 (skanda.8.98.22)
पुरा स्वयंभूर्भगवानुद्धरिष्यन् महीमिमाम् । स रेजे तेन रूपेण दीप्तिमान् मधुसूदनः
purā svayaṁbhūrbhagavānuddhariṣyan mahīmimām | sa reje tena rūpeṇa dīptimān madhusūdanaḥ
Of old, the blessed Self-existent one, about to raise up this Earth, shone resplendent in that form, he, the slayer of Madhu.
Verse 23 (skanda.8.98.23)
निशायां संप्रदीप्तो हि हिमवानिव पर्वतः । ततस्तमृषयस्सर्वे तपसा महता तदा
niśāyāṁ saṁpradīpto hi himavāniva parvataḥ | tatastamṛṣayassarve tapasā mahatā tadā
He blazed in the night like the mountain Himavat ablaze. Then all the sages, by their great austerity, at that time -
Verse 24 (skanda.8.98.24)
स्वेन स्वेनाभिसंप्राप्य तेजस्तस्याभ्यदीपयन् । स विष्णुस्तेजसा तेषामृषीणां परमौजसाम्
svena svenābhisaṁprāpya tejastasyābhyadīpayan | sa viṣṇustejasā teṣāmṛṣīṇāṁ paramaujasām
- each approaching with his own power, kindled his splendour further; and Vishnu, through the splendour of those sages of supreme vigour -
Verse 25 (skanda.8.98.25)
संप्रजज्वाल कालान्ते युगान्ताग्निरिवापरः । नादं कृत्वा च सुमहच्चालयानो महीतलम्
saṁprajajvāla kālānte yugāntāgnirivāparaḥ | nādaṁ kṛtvā ca sumahaccālayāno mahītalam
- blazed forth like a second fire of universal dissolution at the end of an age; and, making a mighty roar and shaking the surface of the earth -
Verse 26 (skanda.8.98.26)
उवाच तान् ऋषीन्सर्वान् हन्मि दैत्यं सुरद्विषम् । हत्वा तं दैत्यराजं वै सिंहं शरभराडिव
uvāca tān ṛṣīnsarvān hanmi daityaṁ suradviṣam | hatvā taṁ daityarājaṁ vai siṁhaṁ śarabharāḍiva
- he said to all those sages: "I shall slay the Daitya, the enemy of the gods; having slain that king of the Daityas, as a sharabha-king slays a lion -"
Verse 27 (skanda.8.98.27)
मोचयिष्ये महीं विग्नां प्रविश्याद्य रसातलम् । स्वस्थाने स्थापयित्वा च दत्वा राज्यं दिवौकसाम् जपध्वं विजयायाद्य शिवाय च तपोधनाः
mocayiṣye mahīṁ vignāṁ praviśyādya rasātalam | svasthāne sthāpayitvā ca datvā rājyaṁ divaukasām japadhvaṁ vijayāyādya śivāya ca tapodhanāḥ
"- I shall, by entering Rasatala this day, free the afflicted Earth; and, having established the gods each in his own place and restored their kingdom to them - chant now, O men rich in austerity, for victory and for auspiciousness."
Verse 28 (skanda.8.98.28)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः । उवाच बलमाधत्स्व दैत्योसौ सुमहाबलः
sanatkumāra uvāca | tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | uvāca balamādhatsva daityosau sumahābalaḥ
Sanatkumara said: Having heard those words of his, Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, said, "Gather your strength; that Daitya is exceedingly mighty."
Verse 29 (skanda.8.98.29)
आस्थाय यत्नं सुमहदप्रमत्तः सुरेश्वर । जहि तं दैत्यराजं वै कृच्छ्रमेतन्मतं मम
āsthāya yatnaṁ sumahadapramattaḥ sureśvara | jahi taṁ daityarājaṁ vai kṛcchrametanmataṁ mama
"Undertaking a very great effort, unwearied, O lord of the gods, slay that king of the Daityas indeed - this, in my judgment, is a hard task."
Verse 30 (skanda.8.98.30)
न तस्य सदृशो दैत्यो हिरण्यकशिपुः पुरा । महाबलोयं दैत्येन्द्रस्तपोयोगसमन्वितः
na tasya sadṛśo daityo hiraṇyakaśipuḥ purā | mahābaloyaṁ daityendrastapoyogasamanvitaḥ
"There is no Daitya equal to him - not even Hiranyakashipu of old; this lord of the Daityas is exceedingly mighty, endowed with the power of austerity and yoga."
Verse 31 (skanda.8.98.31)
ततो देवस्तदा व्यास भगवान् गोवृषध्वजः । सुरैः सब्रह्मकैस्तत्र ऋषिभिश्च तपोधनैः
tato devastadā vyāsa bhagavān govṛṣadhvajaḥ | suraiḥ sabrahmakaistatra ṛṣibhiśca tapodhanaiḥ
Then, O Vyasa, the gods together with Brahma, and the sages rich in austerity there, approached the blessed god whose banner bears the bull -
Verse 32 (skanda.8.98.32)
उक्तः प्रणम्य देवेशो विष्णुमाप्यायय प्रभो । तेजसा स्वेन सर्वेश यथा हन्यात् सुरद्विषम्
uktaḥ praṇamya deveśo viṣṇumāpyāyaya prabho | tejasā svena sarveśa yathā hanyāt suradviṣam
- and, bowing, addressed him: "O lord of the gods, O lord of all, strengthen Vishnu with your own splendour, so that he may slay the enemy of the gods."
Verse 33 (skanda.8.98.33)
भगवानुवाच । तस्मिन् काले सुरेशाभाः सर्वे तेजोमयं हरिम् । प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति ततो दैत्यं क्षिप्रमेव निहंस्यति
bhagavānuvāca | tasmin kāle sureśābhāḥ sarve tejomayaṁ harim | pravekṣyanti tato daityaṁ kṣiprameva nihaṁsyati
The blessed lord said: "At that time, all of you, radiant as the lords of the gods, shall enter into that splendour-filled Hari; then he will swiftly slay the Daitya."
Verse 34 (skanda.8.98.34)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततो ब्रह्मा स्वयं तस्य रक्षां चक्रे महात्मनः । यथावत्तां निबोधाद्य वदतो मे शुचिव्रत
sanatkumāra uvāca | tato brahmā svayaṁ tasya rakṣāṁ cakre mahātmanaḥ | yathāvattāṁ nibodhādya vadato me śucivrata
Sanatkumara said: Then Brahma himself performed a protective rite for that great soul; hear it now, duly, O man of pure vows, as I tell it.
Verse 35 (skanda.8.98.35)
ब्रह्मोवाच । रक्षन्तु त्वां विधाता च धाता च ऋषिसत्तम । रुद्रः स्रष्टा च सर्वेषां कर्माणि तव युध्यतः
brahmovāca | rakṣantu tvāṁ vidhātā ca dhātā ca ṛṣisattama | rudraḥ sraṣṭā ca sarveṣāṁ karmāṇi tava yudhyataḥ
Brahma said: May the Ordainer and the Sustainer protect you, O best of sages; and may Rudra, the creator of all, protect your deeds as you go to battle.
Verse 36 (skanda.8.98.36)
कपाली तालकेतुश्च गन्धाधिपतिरेव च । रसस्याधिपतिश्चैव सूक्ष्मरूपश्च रक्षतु
kapālī tālaketuśca gandhādhipatireva ca | rasasyādhipatiścaiva sūkṣmarūpaśca rakṣatu
May Kapali, and Talaketu, and the lord of smell, and likewise the lord of taste, and he of subtle form, protect you.
Verse 37 (skanda.8.98.37)
स्पर्शवेत्ता च यः सूक्ष्मो नादवाँश्च महामनाः । इन्द्रियाधिपतिश्चैव नीललोहित एव च
sparśavettā ca yaḥ sūkṣmo nādavā~śca mahāmanāḥ | indriyādhipatiścaiva nīlalohita eva ca
And may he who is subtle, the knower of touch, and he who possesses sound, the great-minded one, and the lord of the senses, and Nilalohita, protect you.
Verse 38 (skanda.8.98.38)
रक्षतु त्वां महायोगी बीजाधिपतिरेव च । बीजाधिष्ठानमालश्च चेतनापतिरेव च
rakṣatu tvāṁ mahāyogī bījādhipatireva ca | bījādhiṣṭhānamālaśca cetanāpatireva ca
May the great Yogin protect you, and likewise the lord of seeds, and he who presides over the seat of seeds, and the lord of consciousness.
Verse 39 (skanda.8.98.39)
प्रवृत्तेश्च निवृत्तेश्च कालवेत्ता च यः प्रभुः । धर्माधर्मगतिश्चैव कर्तॄणां फलदः प्रभुः
pravṛtteśca nivṛtteśca kālavettā ca yaḥ prabhuḥ | dharmādharmagatiścaiva kartṝṇāṁ phaladaḥ prabhuḥ
May the lord who knows the time of action and cessation, and he who governs the course of dharma and adharma, that lord who gives fruit to those who act, protect you.
Verse 40 (skanda.8.98.40)
गुणानां वृत्तिदो यश्च अनपेक्षश्च कर्मसु । नियमस्य च यः कर्ता कर्मवेत्ता च कर्मणाम्
guṇānāṁ vṛttido yaśca anapekṣaśca karmasu | niyamasya ca yaḥ kartā karmavettā ca karmaṇām
He who gives function to the qualities, and who yet stands indifferent to actions themselves, he who is the maker of restraint, and the knower of all deeds -
Verse 41 (skanda.8.98.41)
विना च करणैर्यश्च करणार्थं प्रवर्तते । सर्वज्ञः सर्वगो यश्च अधिष्ठाता च यः स्वयम्
vinā ca karaṇairyaśca karaṇārthaṁ pravartate | sarvajñaḥ sarvago yaśca adhiṣṭhātā ca yaḥ svayam
- and he who, without any organs, yet acts for the purpose of the organs; the all-knowing, the all-pervading, and he who is himself the presiding ruler of all -
Verse 42 (skanda.8.98.42)
येन नाधिष्ठितं किञ्चित् कथञ्चिन्नापि विद्यते । सर्वतः पाणिपादान्तः सर्वतोक्षिशिरोमुखः । सर्वतः श्रुतिमाँश्चैव सर्वतोगतिरव्ययः
yena nādhiṣṭhitaṁ kiñcit kathañcinnāpi vidyate | sarvataḥ pāṇipādāntaḥ sarvatokṣiśiromukhaḥ | sarvataḥ śrutimā~ścaiva sarvatogatiravyayaḥ
- by whom nothing whatsoever exists unruled in any way; he whose hands and feet extend everywhere, whose eyes, heads, and faces are everywhere, whose ears are everywhere, and whose imperishable movement reaches everywhere -
Verse 43 (skanda.8.98.43)
ऐश्वर्यमक्षयं यस्य सहस्राकृतयस्तथा । यः स्रष्टा सर्वभूतानां तत्वानाञ्च महायशाः
aiśvaryamakṣayaṁ yasya sahasrākṛtayastathā | yaḥ sraṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṁ tatvānāñca mahāyaśāḥ
- whose lordship is imperishable, who has a thousand forms, who is the creator of all beings and of all the principles, of great renown -
Verse 44 (skanda.8.98.44)
संसारस्यास्य यः कर्ता तथैव च निवर्तकः । यं सांख्या नाभिजानन्ति योगिनो विदितागमाः
saṁsārasyāsya yaḥ kartā tathaiva ca nivartakaḥ | yaṁ sāṁkhyā nābhijānanti yogino viditāgamāḥ
- he who is the maker of this cycle of existence, and likewise its ender; whom even the followers of Sankhya do not fully know, nor the Yogins learned in scripture -
Verse 45 (skanda.8.98.45)
तुष्टयो ज्ञातयो नित्यं मायया मोहयन् प्रजाः । ओतप्रोतानि चैतस्मिन् तत्त्वानि सुमहात्मनि
tuṣṭayo jñātayo nityaṁ māyayā mohayan prajāḥ | otaprotāni caitasmin tattvāni sumahātmani
- whose contentments and knowing powers ever delude creatures through maya, and in whom, that great soul, all the principles are interwoven like warp and weft -
Verse 46 (skanda.8.98.46)
पुरुषादीनि सर्वाणि यो व्याप्तश्च न केनचित् । यमज्ञात्वा न मोक्षोस्ति येन बद्धमिदं जगत्
puruṣādīni sarvāṇi yo vyāptaśca na kenacit | yamajñātvā na mokṣosti yena baddhamidaṁ jagat
- he who pervades Purusha and all other principles, yet is pervaded by nothing; without knowing whom there is no liberation, and by whom this world is bound -
Verse 47 (skanda.8.98.47)
येनाहं सर्वलोकानां कृतः पूर्वं प्रजापतिः । त्वं यज्ञश्चैव विष्णुश्च येन सृष्टाः पुरातन
yenāhaṁ sarvalokānāṁ kṛtaḥ pūrvaṁ prajāpatiḥ | tvaṁ yajñaścaiva viṣṇuśca yena sṛṣṭāḥ purātana
- by whom I was made, of old, the Prajapati of all the worlds; and by whom, O ancient one, you, and Sacrifice, and Vishnu were created -
Verse 48 (skanda.8.98.48)
स ते बलञ्च सुमहदूर्ज्जं तेजश्च यच्छतु । अकामलब्धां सर्वत्र स्मृतिं चास्त्रे महामनाः
sa te balañca sumahadūrjjaṁ tejaśca yacchatu | akāmalabdhāṁ sarvatra smṛtiṁ cāstre mahāmanāḥ
- may he grant you very great strength, vigour, and splendour, O great-minded one, and unsought memory of every weapon, everywhere.
Verse 49 (skanda.8.98.49)
रक्षां च सर्वगो देवो युध्यतस्ते प्रयच्छतु । कृतरक्षो मया सम्यग्गच्छ दैत्यं विनाशय
rakṣāṁ ca sarvago devo yudhyataste prayacchatu | kṛtarakṣo mayā samyaggaccha daityaṁ vināśaya
And may that all-pervading god grant you protection as you fight. Thus duly protected by me, go now, and destroy the Daitya.
Verse 50 (skanda.8.98.50)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । ततस्तं स्तुतिभिर्विप्रास्तस्य रोमान्तरस्थिताः । अस्तुवन् वाग्भिरिष्टाभिर्देवाश्च बहुमानतः
sanatkumāra uvāca | tatastaṁ stutibhirviprāstasya romāntarasthitāḥ | astuvan vāgbhiriṣṭābhirdevāśca bahumānataḥ
Sanatkumara said: Then the brahmins dwelling within his hair-pores praised him with hymns, and the gods too extolled him with cherished words, with great reverence.
Verse 51 (skanda.8.98.51)
सर्वाणि च जयेत्यूचुर्भूतानि विविधानि च । अनाहतास्ततो व्योम्नि देवदुन्दुभयः शुभाः
sarvāṇi ca jayetyūcurbhūtāni vividhāni ca | anāhatāstato vyomni devadundubhayaḥ śubhāḥ
And all the manifold creatures too cried out, "Victory!"; then, unstruck by any hand, auspicious divine drums resounded in the sky,
Verse 52 (skanda.8.98.52)
विनेदुस्तत्र दिव्याश्च वराहो यत्र सोभवत् । सुरभीणाञ्च पुष्पाणां वराहोपरि सर्वतः । वृष्टयः पेतुरत्यर्थं देवानां हर्षवर्धनाः
vinedustatra divyāśca varāho yatra sobhavat | surabhīṇāñca puṣpāṇāṁ varāhopari sarvataḥ | vṛṣṭayaḥ peturatyarthaṁ devānāṁ harṣavardhanāḥ
sounding there, divine as they were, at the place where that Boar had appeared. And showers of fragrant flowers, exceedingly abundant, fell from every side upon the Boar, increasing the joy of the gods.
Verse 53 (skanda.8.98.53)
ततः सिद्धिरिति प्रोच्य कृत्वा रुद्राय वै नमः । जपञ्जयावहं रुद्रं स ययौ वरुणालयम्
tataḥ siddhiriti procya kṛtvā rudrāya vai namaḥ | japañjayāvahaṁ rudraṁ sa yayau varuṇālayam
Then, having proclaimed "May success be ours," and having paid homage to Rudra, and reciting the victory-bringing name of Rudra, he set out for the abode of Varuna.
Verse 54 (skanda.8.98.54)
स सेव्यमानो मुनिभिस्तपोधनैस्तथा शकुन्तैर्बहुभिर्जयावहैः । मृगैश्च दिव्यैर्बहुभिः प्रदक्षिणैर्जयाय देवः प्रययौ महार्णवम्
sa sevyamāno munibhistapodhanaistathā śakuntairbahubhirjayāvahaiḥ | mṛgaiśca divyairbahubhiḥ pradakṣiṇairjayāya devaḥ prayayau mahārṇavam
Attended by sages rich in austerity, and by many birds bearing tokens of victory, and by many divine deer circling him auspiciously to his right, that god set forth toward the great ocean for victory.
