Jatayu Confronts Ravana

Sarga 49All sargasSarga 51

Shloka 1 (aranya.50.1)

tam śabdam avasuptasya jaṭāyuḥ atha śuśruve | niraikṣat rāvaṇam kṣipram vaidehīm ca dadarśa saḥ || 50.1 ||

Jatayu, though drowsy with sleep, heard that cry; he looked about at once and saw Ravana, and Vaidehi as well.

Shloka 2 (aranya.50.2)

tataḥ parvata śṛṃga ābhaḥ tīkṣṇa tuṇḍaḥ khaga uttamaḥ | vanaspati gataḥ śrīmān vyājahāra śubhām giram || 50.2 ||

Then that majestic, finest of birds, sharp-beaked, towering like a mountain-peak, perched upon the tree, spoke these fitting words:

Shloka 3 (aranya.50.3)

daśagrīva sthito dharme purāṇe satya saṃśrayaḥ | bhrātaḥ saḥ tvam ninditam karma kartum na arhasi saṃpratām || 50.3 ||

"O ten-necked one, O brother, I am one who abides by ancient righteousness and holds fast to truth. It is not fitting for you to commit this reprehensible deed now.

Shloka 4 (aranya.50.4)

jaṭāyuḥ nāma nāmnā aham gṛdhra rājo mahābalaḥ | rājā sarvasya lokasya mahendra varuṇa upamaḥ || 50.4 ||

My name is Jatayu; I am the mighty king of vultures. Rama, son of Dasharatha, is the sovereign of all the world, comparable to Mahendra and Varuna,

Shloka 5 (aranya.50.5)

lokānām ca hite yukto rāmo daśaratha ātmajaḥ | tasya eṣā loka nāthasya dharma patnī yaśasvinī || 50.5 ||

and ever devoted to the welfare of all the worlds. This glorious lady is the rightful wife of that protector of the worlds —

Shloka 6 (aranya.50.6)

sītā nāma varārohā yām tvam hartum iha icchasi | katham rājā sthito dharme para dārān parāmṛśet || 50.6 ||

Sita by name, that shapely lady, whom you now wish to abduct. How can a king who abides by righteousness lay hands upon another man's wife?

Shloka 7 (aranya.50.7)

rakṣaṇīyā viśeṣeṇa rāja dārā mahābalaḥ | nivartaya gatim nīcām para dāra abhimarśanāt || 50.7 ||

O mighty Ravana, a king's wife above all deserves protection. Turn back from this base course of laying hands on another's wife.

Shloka 8 (aranya.50.8)

na tat samācaret dhīro yat paro asya vigarhayet | yathā ātmanaḥ tathā anyeṣām dārā rakṣyā vimarśanāt || 50.8 ||

A wise man does not do that for which another would condemn him. As one protects one's own wife from another's touch, so should one protect the wives of others.

Shloka 9 (aranya.50.9)

artham vā yadi vā kāmam śiṣṭāḥ śāstreṣu anāgatam | vyavasyanti anu rājānam dharmam paulastya naṃdana || 50.9 ||

O scion of Pulastya, where scriptures give no guidance in matters of wealth, pleasure, or even righteousness, the learned take their bearing from the conduct of the king.

Shloka 10 (aranya.50.10)

rājā dharmaḥ ca kāmaḥ ca dravyāṇām ca uttamo nidhiḥ | dharmaḥ śubham vā pāpam vā rāja mūlam pravartate || 50.10 ||

The king is the supreme repository of righteousness, pleasure, and wealth; and whether it be virtue or vice, it takes root and spreads from the king.

Shloka 11 (aranya.50.11)

pāpa svabhāvaḥ capalaḥ katham tvam rakṣasām vara | aiśvaryam abhisaṃprāpto vimānam iva duṣkṛtī || 50.11 ||

O best of rakshasas, being by nature sinful and fickle, how have you, an evildoer, come to possess such sovereignty — like a sinner who has somehow attained a celestial chariot?

Shloka 12 (aranya.50.12)

kāma svabhāvo yaḥ saḥ asau na śakyaḥ tam pramārjitum | na hi duṣṭa ātmanām āryam āvasati ālaye ciram || 50.12 ||

One's inborn nature cannot easily be effaced; and true prosperity does not long dwell in the abode of the evil-minded.

Shloka 13 (aranya.50.13)

viṣaye vā pure vā te yadā rāmo mahābalaḥ | na aparādhyati dharmātmā katham tasya aparādhyasi || 50.13 ||

When that mighty and righteous-souled Rama has done no wrong to you, either in your realm or in your city, how then do you commit this wrong against him?

Shloka 14 (aranya.50.14)

yadi śūrpaṇakhā hetoḥ janasthāna gataḥ kharaḥ | ativṛtto hataḥ pūrvam rāmeṇa akliṣṭa karmaṇā || 50.14 ||

If, because of Shurpanakha, Khara, dwelling in Janasthana, transgressed and was earlier slain by the tireless Rama —

Shloka 15 (aranya.50.15)

atra brūhi yathā tattvam ko rāmasya vyatikramaḥ | yasya tvam loka nāthasya hṛtvā bhāryām gamiṣyasi || 50.15 ||

then tell me truly, what transgression has Rama committed, that you should go off having stolen the wife of that lord of the worlds?

Shloka 16 (aranya.50.16)

kṣipram visṛja vaidehīm mā tvā ghoreṇa cakṣuṣā | dahet dahanabhūtena vṛtram indra aśaniḥ yathā || 50.16 ||

Release Vaidehi at once, lest his terrible, fire-like eyes burn you to ashes, as Indra's thunderbolt once consumed the demon Vritra.

Shloka 17 (aranya.50.17)

sarpam āśīviṣam baddhvā vastra ante na avabudhyase | grīvāyām pratimuktam ca kāla pāśam na paśyasi || 50.17 ||

You are not even aware that you have bound a venomous serpent to the hem of your garment; nor do you see that the noose of Death already hangs about your neck.

Shloka 18 (aranya.50.18)

sa bhāraḥ saumya bhartavyo yo naram na avasādayet | tat annam api bhoktavyam jīryate yat anāmayam || 50.18 ||

O gentle one, only that burden should be shouldered which does not crush a man; only that food should be eaten which is digested without harm.

Shloka 19 (aranya.50.19)

yat kṛtvā na bhavet dharmo na kīrtiḥ na yaśaḥ dhruvam | śarīrasya bhavet khedaḥ kaḥ tat karma samācaret || 50.19 ||

Who would ever undertake a deed that brings neither righteousness, nor fame, nor lasting glory, but only weariness of the body?

Shloka 20 (aranya.50.20)

ṣaṣṭi varṣa sahasrāṇi jātasya mama rāvaṇa | pitṛ paitāmaham rājyam yathāvat anutiṣṭhataḥ || 50.20 ||

O Ravana, sixty thousand years have passed since my birth, through which I have upheld, in due tradition, the realm of my fathers and forefathers.

Shloka 21 (aranya.50.21)

I am old, you are young; you are armed with a bow, mounted on a chariot, armoured, and supplied with arrows — yet even so, you shall not go off safely, having taken Vaidehi.

Shloka 22 (aranya.50.22)

na śaktaḥ tvam balāt hartum vaidehīm mama paśyataḥ | hetubhiḥ nyāya saṃyuktaiḥ dhruvām veda śrutīm iva || 50.22 ||

While I watch, you shall not be able to forcibly abduct Vaidehi — no more than the definitive truth of the Vedas can be shaken by clever, contrary reasoning.

Shloka 23 (aranya.50.23)

yudhyasva yadi śūro asi muhūrtam tiṣṭha rāvaṇa | śayiṣyase hato bhūmau yathā pūrvam kharaḥ tathā || 50.23 ||

Stand and fight, Ravana, if you are truly a hero — wait but a moment, and you shall lie slain upon the ground, just as Khara did before you.

Shloka 24 (aranya.50.24)

asakṛt saṃyuge yena nihatā daitya dānavāḥ | na cirāt cīra vāsāḥ tvām rāmo yudhi vadhiṣyati || 50.24 ||

He by whom daityas and danavas have time and again been slain in battle — that bark-clad Rama shall, before long, slay you too in combat.

Shloka 25 (aranya.50.25)

kim nu śakyam mayā kartum gatau dūram nṛpa ātmajau | kṣipram tvam naśyase nīca tayoḥ bhīto na saṃśayaḥ || 50.25 ||

What indeed can I do now, when the two princes have gone far off? Yet, base one, you shall vanish quickly in fear of them — of this there is no doubt.

Shloka 26 (aranya.50.26)

na hi me jīvamānasya nayiṣyasi śubhām imām | sītām kamala patra akṣīm rāmasya mahaṣīm priyām || 50.26 ||

While I still live, you shall not carry off this auspicious Sita, lotus-petal-eyed, the beloved queen of Rama.

Shloka 27 (aranya.50.27)

avaśyam tu mayā kāryam priyam tasya mahātmanaḥ | jīvitena api rāmasya tathā daśarathasya ca || 50.27 ||

I must surely do something to please that great-souled Rama, and likewise Dasharatha — even at the cost of my own life.

Shloka 28 (aranya.50.28)

tiṣṭha tiṣṭha daśagrīva muhūrtam paśya rāvaṇa | vṛntāt iva phalam tvām tu pātayeyam ratha uttamāt | yuddha ātithyam pradāsyāmi yathā prāṇam niśā cara || 50.28 ||

"Stand, stand, O ten-necked one! Wait but a moment, Ravana, and see — I shall hurl you down from your splendid chariot as one plucks a fruit from its stem. O night-ranger, as long as breath remains in me, I shall offer you the hospitality of battle!"
