Bharata Reveals the King's Death

Shloka 1 (ayodhya.101.1)

तम् तु रामः समाश्वास्य भ्रातरम् गुरु वत्सलम् । लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा प्रष्टुम् समुपचक्रमे ॥ 101.1 ॥

tam tu rāmaḥ samāśvāsya bhrātaram guru vatsalam | lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā praṣṭum samupacakrame

Then Rama, having consoled his brother who was devoted to his elders, together with Lakshmana began to question him thus:

Shloka 2 (ayodhya.101.2)

किम् एतद् इच्छेयम् अहम् श्रोतुम् प्रव्याहृतम् त्वया । यस्मात् त्वम् आगतो देशम् इमम् चीर जटा अजिनी ॥ 101.2 ॥

kim etad iccheyam aham śrotum pravyāhṛtam tvayā | yasmāt tvam āgato deśam imam cīra jaṭā ajinī

"I wish to hear from you why you have come to this place in bark garments and matted hair, why you have left there."

Shloka 3 (ayodhya.101.3)

किम् निमित्तम् इमम् देशम् कृष्ण अजिन जटा धरः । हित्वा राज्यम् प्रविष्टः त्वम् तत् सर्वम् वक्तुम् अर्हसि ॥ 101.3 ॥

kim nimittam imam deśam kṛṣṇa ajina jaṭā dharaḥ | hitvā rājyam praviṣṭaḥ tvam tat sarvam vaktum arhasi

"For what reason have you, clad in deer-skin and matted hair, entered this place, forsaking the kingdom? You ought to tell me all of that."

Shloka 4 (ayodhya.101.4)

इत्य् उक्तः केकयी पुत्रः काकुत्स्थेन महात्मना । प्रगृह्य बलवद् भूयः प्रान्जलिर् वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥ 101.4 ॥

ity uktaḥ kekayī putraḥ kākutsthena mahātmanā | pragṛhya balavad bhūyaḥ prānjalir vākyam abravīt

Thus questioned by the great-souled descendant of Kakutstha, Bharata, son of Kaikeyi, embracing him firmly once more, spoke these words with joined palms:

Shloka 5 (ayodhya.101.5)

आर्यम् तातः परित्यज्य कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् । गतः स्वर्गम् महा बाहुः पुत्र शोक अभिपीडितः ॥ 101.5 ॥

āryam tātaḥ parityajya kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram | gataḥ svargam mahā bāhuḥ putra śoka abhipīḍitaḥ

"O noble one, having performed a most difficult deed, our father, the mighty-armed one, forsaking us has gone to the heavenly region; he died stricken with grief for his son."

Shloka 6 (ayodhya.101.6)

स्त्रिया नियुक्तः कैकेय्या मम मात्रा परम् तप । चकार सुमहत् पापम् इदम् आत्म यशो हरम् ॥ 101.6 ॥

striyā niyuktaḥ kaikeyyā mama mātrā param tapa | cakāra sumahat pāpam idam ātma yaśo haram

"O scorcher of foes, urged by his wife, my mother Kaikeyi, our father committed this terrible sin that has destroyed his own good name."

Shloka 7 (ayodhya.101.7)

सा राज्य फलम् अप्राप्य विधवा शोक कर्शिता । पतिष्यति महा घोरे निरये जननी मम ॥ 101.7 ॥

sā rājya phalam aprāpya vidhavā śoka karśitā | patiṣyati mahā ghore niraye jananī mama

"Without having tasted the fruit of kingship, widowed and wasted with grief, my mother will fall into a most terrible hell."

Shloka 8 (ayodhya.101.8)

तस्य मे दास भूतस्य प्रसादम् कर्तुम् अर्हसि । अभिषिन्चस्व च अद्य एव राज्येन मघवान् इव ॥ 101.8 ॥

tasya me dāsa bhūtasya prasādam kartum arhasi | abhiṣincasva ca adya eva rājyena maghavān iva

"Be gracious to me, who am your true servant — this very day accept the royal anointing, like Indra, the lord of the gods!"

Shloka 9 (ayodhya.101.9)

इमाः प्रकृतयः सर्वा विधवा मातुरः च याः । त्वत् सकाशम् अनुप्राप्ताः प्रसादम् कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥ 101.9 ॥

imāḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvā vidhavā māturaḥ ca yāḥ | tvat sakāśam anuprāptāḥ prasādam kartum arhasi

"Be gracious to all these ministers, and to these widowed queens, your mothers, who have come to you seeking this favour."

Shloka 10 (ayodhya.101.10)

तदा आनुपूर्व्या युक्तम् च युक्तम् च आत्मनि मानद । राज्यम् प्राप्नुहि धर्मेण सकामान् सुहृदः कुरु ॥ 101.10 ॥

tadā ānupūrvyā yuktam ca yuktam ca ātmani mānada | rājyam prāpnuhi dharmeṇa sakāmān suhṛdaḥ kuru

"O bestower of honour, therefore rightly obtain, in due succession and through righteousness, the kingdom that is yours, and fulfil the wishes of your well-wishers."

Shloka 11 (ayodhya.101.11)

भवतु अविधवा भूमिः समग्रा पतिना त्वया । शशिना विमलेन इव शारदी रजनी यथा ॥ 101.11 ॥

bhavatu avidhavā bhūmiḥ samagrā patinā tvayā | śaśinā vimalena iva śāradī rajanī yathā

"Become the lord of this entire earth and end her widowhood, as the spotless moon ends the widowhood of the autumn night."

Shloka 12 (ayodhya.101.12)

एभिः च सचिवैः सार्धम् शिरसा याचितो मया । भ्रातुः शिष्यस्य दासस्य प्रसादम् कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥ 101.12 ॥

ebhiḥ ca sacivaiḥ sārdham śirasā yācito mayā | bhrātuḥ śiṣyasya dāsasya prasādam kartum arhasi

"Together with these ministers, I beg this favour of you with bowed head — grant it to your brother, who is both your disciple and your servant."

Shloka 13 (ayodhya.101.13)

तद् इदम् शाश्वतम् पित्र्यम् सर्वम् सचिव मण्डलम् । पूजितम् पुरुष व्याघ्र न अतिक्रमितुम् उत्सहे ॥ 101.13 ॥

tad idam śāśvatam pitryam sarvam saciva maṇḍalam | pūjitam puruṣa vyāghra na atikramitum utsahe

"O tiger among men, I dare not overstep this eternal, ancestral, and honoured entire body of ministers."

Shloka 14 (ayodhya.101.14)

एवम् उक्त्वा महा बाहुः सबाष्पः केकयी सुतः । रामस्य शिरसा पादौ जग्राह भरतः पुनः ॥ 101.14 ॥

evam uktvā mahā bāhuḥ sabāṣpaḥ kekayī sutaḥ | rāmasya śirasā pādau jagrāha bharataḥ punaḥ

Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed son of Kaikeyi, with tears, once more seized Rama's feet and bowed his head to them, as is prescribed.

Shloka 15 (ayodhya.101.15)

तम् मत्तम् इव मातन्गम् निह्श्वसन्तम् पुनः पुनः । भ्रातरम् भरतम् रामः परिष्वज्य इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ 101.15 ॥

tam mattam iva mātangam nihśvasantam punaḥ punaḥ | bhrātaram bharatam rāmaḥ pariṣvajya idam abravīt

Rama embraced that brother Bharata, who was sighing again and again like an elephant in must, and spoke thus:

Shloka 16 (ayodhya.101.16)

कुलीनः सत्त्व सम्पन्नः तेजस्वी चरित व्रतः । राज्य हेतोः कथम् पापम् आचरेत् त्वद् विधो जनः ॥ 101.16 ॥

kulīnaḥ sattva sampannaḥ tejasvī carita vrataḥ | rājya hetoḥ katham pāpam ācaret tvad vidho janaḥ

"How could a man of noble birth, endowed with virtue, illustrious and true to his vows, such as you, commit sin for the sake of a kingdom?"

Shloka 17 (ayodhya.101.17)

न दोषम् त्वयि पश्यामि सूक्ष्मम् अप्य् अरि सूदन । न च अपि जननीम् बाल्यात् त्वम् विगर्हितुम् अर्हसि ॥ 101.17 ॥

na doṣam tvayi paśyāmi sūkṣmam apy ari sūdana | na ca api jananīm bālyāt tvam vigarhitum arhasi

"O destroyer of foes, I see not the slightest fault in you, and it is not right that you should blame our mother for a childish matter."

Shloka 18 (ayodhya.101.18)

कामकरो महाप्राअज्ञ गुरूणां सर्वदानघ । उपपन्नेषु दारेषु पुत्रेषु च विधीयते ॥ 101.18 ॥

kāmakaro mahāprāajña gurūṇāṃ sarvadānagha | upapanneṣu dāreṣu putreṣu ca vidhīyate

"O highly wise and sinless one, it is ever permitted for elders to act as they wish with regard to their own wives and sons."

Shloka 19 (ayodhya.101.19)

वयमस्य यथा लोके संख्याताः सौम्य साधुभिः । भार्याः पुत्राश्च शिष्याश्छ त्वमनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥ 101.19 ॥

vayamasya yathā loke saṃkhyātāḥ saumya sādhubhiḥ | bhāryāḥ putrāśca śiṣyāścha tvamanujñātumarhasi

"O gentle one, as it is declared by the virtuous in this world, we — wives, sons, and disciples — must all follow the will of our master; this you should know."

Shloka 20 (ayodhya.101.20)

वने वा चीरवसनं सौम्यकृष्णाजिनाम्बरम् । राज्ये वापि महाराजो मां वासयितुमीश्वरः ॥ 101.20 ॥

vane vā cīravasanaṃ saumyakṛṣṇājināmbaram | rājye vāpi mahārājo māṃ vāsayitumīśvaraḥ

"Whether to make me dwell in the forest, wearing bark garments and a black antelope skin, or to seat me upon the throne, O gentle one — the great king alone was master of that choice."

Shloka 21 (ayodhya.101.21)

यावत् पितरि धर्मज्न गौरवम् लोक सत्कृते । तावद् धर्मभृताम् श्रेष्ठ जनन्याम् अपि गौरवम् ॥ 101.21 ॥

yāvat pitari dharmajna gauravam loka satkṛte | tāvad dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭha jananyām api gauravam

"O knower of dharma, foremost among the upholders of righteousness, just as reverence is due to a father honoured by the world, so equal reverence is due to a mother."

Shloka 22 (ayodhya.101.22)

एताभ्याम् धर्म शीलाभ्याम् वनम् गग्च्छ इति राघव । माता पितृभ्याम् उक्तो अहम् कथम् अन्यत् समाचरे ॥ 101.22 ॥

etābhyām dharma śīlābhyām vanam gagccha iti rāghava | mātā pitṛbhyām ukto aham katham anyat samācare

"O Raghava, when both my righteous parents themselves bid me go to the forest, how could I have acted otherwise?"

Shloka 23 (ayodhya.101.23)

त्वया राज्यम् अयोध्यायाम् प्राप्तव्यम् लोक सत्कृतम् । वस्तव्यम् दण्डक अरण्ये मया वल्कल वाससा ॥ 101.23 ॥

tvayā rājyam ayodhyāyām prāptavyam loka satkṛtam | vastavyam daṇḍaka araṇye mayā valkala vāsasā

"It is for you to obtain the world-honoured kingdom in Ayodhya, and for me to dwell, clad in bark, in the Dandaka forest."

Shloka 24 (ayodhya.101.24)

एवम् कृत्वा महा राजो विभागम् लोक सम्निधौ । व्यादिश्य च महा तेजा दिवम् दशरथो गतः ॥ 101.24 ॥

evam kṛtvā mahā rājo vibhāgam loka samnidhau | vyādiśya ca mahā tejā divam daśaratho gataḥ

"Having thus divided our duties in the presence of the people, the mighty and splendorous king Dasaratha departed for heaven."

Shloka 25 (ayodhya.101.25)

स च प्रमाणम् धर्म आत्मा राजा लोक गुरुः तव । पित्रा दत्तम् यथा भागम् उपभोक्तुम् त्वम् अर्हसि ॥ 101.25 ॥

sa ca pramāṇam dharma ātmā rājā loka guruḥ tava | pitrā dattam yathā bhāgam upabhoktum tvam arhasi

"That righteous-souled king, our world-venerated preceptor, is the final authority for you; you ought to enjoy the share he allotted you."

Shloka 26 (ayodhya.101.26)

चतुर्दश समाः सौम्य दण्डक अरण्यम् आश्रितः । उपभोक्ष्ये तु अहम् दत्तम् भागम् पित्रा महात्मना ॥ 101.26 ॥

caturdaśa samāḥ saumya daṇḍaka araṇyam āśritaḥ | upabhokṣye tu aham dattam bhāgam pitrā mahātmanā

"As for me, O gentle one, I shall for fourteen years dwell in the Dandaka forest and enjoy the share allotted to me by our high-souled father."
