Shloka 1 (ayodhya.50.1)

viśālān kosalān ramyān yātvā lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ| ayodhyābhimukho dhīmān prāñjalirvākyamabravīt

Having traversed the vast and lovely land of Kosala, the wise elder brother of Lakshmana turned his face toward Ayodhya and, with joined palms, spoke these words.

Shloka 2 (ayodhya.50.2)

āpṛcche tvāṃ purīśreṣṭhe kākutsthaparipālite| daivatāni ca yāni tvāṃ pālayantyāvasanti ca

'I take my leave of you, finest of cities, guarded so well by the line of Kakutstha — and of all the deities who protect and dwell within you.'

Shloka 3 (ayodhya.50.3)

nivṛttavanavāsastvāmanṛṇo jagatīpateḥ| punardrakṣyāmi mātrā ca pitrā ca saha saṃgataḥ

'When my time in the forest is done, and I am freed of my debt to the sovereign, I shall see you again, reunited with my mother and father.'

Shloka 4 (ayodhya.50.4)

tato rudhiratāmrākṣo bhujamudyamya dakṣiṇam| aśrupūrṇamukho dīno'bravījjānapadaṃ janam

Then, his eyes red as blood, his right arm raised, his face streaming with tears, the sorrowful Rama spoke to the assembled country-folk.

Shloka 5 (ayodhya.50.5)

anukrośo dayā caiva yathārhaṃ mayi vaḥ kṛtaḥ| ciraṃ duḥkhasya pāpīyo gamyatāmarthasiddhaye

'You have shown me compassion and mercy, as much as I deserve. To dwell on this sorrow any longer serves no purpose — go now, each to see to your own affairs.'

Shloka 6 (ayodhya.50.6)

te'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ kṛtvā cāpi pradakṣiṇam| vilapanto narā ghoraṃ vyatiṣṭhanta kvacitkvacit

Saluting the great-souled prince and circling him in reverence, the people yet stood rooted here and there, weeping bitterly.

Shloka 7 (ayodhya.50.7)

tathā vilapatāṃ teṣāmatṛptānāṃ ca rāghavaḥ| acakṣurviṣayaṃ prāyādyathārkaḥ kṣaṇadāmukhe

As they lamented on, unsatisfied, Raghava passed beyond their sight, as the sun vanishes from view at the coming of night.

Shloka 8 (ayodhya.50.8)

tato dhānyadhanopetān dānaśīlajanān śivān| akutaścidbhayān ramyāṃścaityayūpasamāvṛtān

Then that land of Kosala — rich in grain and wealth, its people given to charity, blessed, free of every fear, delightful, ringed with shrines and sacrificial posts —

Shloka 9 (ayodhya.50.9)

udyānāmravanopetān saṃpannasalilāśayān| tuṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇān gokulākulasevitān

'— set about with gardens and mango-groves, rich in ponds of water, thronging with contented, well-fed people, alive with herds of cattle —'

Shloka 10 (ayodhya.50.10)

lakṣaṇīyānnarendrāṇāṃ brahmaghoṣābhināditān| rathena puruṣavyāghraḥ kosalānatyavartata

'— worthy of the gaze of kings, echoing with the chant of the Vedas — that Kosala did the tiger among men, in his chariot, leave behind him.'

Shloka 11 (ayodhya.50.11)

madhyena muditaṃ sphītaṃ ramyodyānasamākulam| rājyaṃ bhogyaṃ narendrāṇāṃ yayau dhṛtimatāṃ varaḥ

Through the heart of that joyful, prosperous kingdom, thronged with lovely gardens, fit for kings to enjoy, that finest of the steadfast pressed on.

Shloka 12 (ayodhya.50.12)

tatra tripathagāṃ divyāṃ śivatoyāmaśaivalām| dadarśa rāghavo gaṅgāṃ puṇyāmṛṣinisevitām

There Raghava beheld the Ganga — flowing through three worlds, celestial, her waters holy and free of weed, sacred, frequented by sages.

Shloka 13 (ayodhya.50.13)

āśramairavidūrasthaiḥ śrīmadbhiḥ samalaṃkṛtām| kāle'psarobhirhṛṣṭābhiḥ sevitāmbhohradāṃ śivām

She was graced by splendid hermitages close at hand, her pools visited in season by joyful nymphs of heaven.

Shloka 14 (ayodhya.50.14)

devadānavagandharvaiḥ kinnarairupaśobhitām| nāgagandharvapatnībhiḥ sevitāṃ satataṃ śivām

Graced by gods, demons, gandharvas, and kinnaras, ever attended by the wives of serpents and gandharvas — that auspicious river —

Shloka 15 (ayodhya.50.15)

devākrīḍaśatākīrṇāṃ devodyānaśatāyutām| devārthamākāśagamāṃ vikhyātāṃ devapadminīm

thronged with a hundred playgrounds and gardens of the gods, coursing through the sky for the gods' sake, known in heaven by the name Devapadmini.

Shloka 16 (ayodhya.50.16)

jalaghātāṭṭahāsogrāṃ phenanirmalahāsinīm| kvacidveṇīkṛtajalāṃ kvacidāvartaśobhitām

Where her waves clashed she seemed to roar with fierce laughter, her foam a spotless smile; here her waters braided like a maiden's plait, there adorned with whirlpools.

Shloka 17 (ayodhya.50.17)

kvacitstimitagambhīrāṃ kvacidvegajalākulām| kvacidgambhīranirghoṣāṃ kvacidbhairavanisvanām

Here she lay still and deep, there churned with rushing water; here she roared low and grave, there ran on with a dreadful sound.

Shloka 18 (ayodhya.50.18)

devasaṃghāplutajalāṃ nirmalotpalaśobhitām| kvacidābhogapulināṃ kvacinnirmalavālukām

Hosts of gods bathed in her waters, bright with spotless lotuses; here she spread into wide sandbanks, there lay lined with clean, pale sand.

Shloka 19 (ayodhya.50.19)

haṃsasārasasaṃghuṣṭāṃ cakravākopakūjitām| sadāmadaiśca vihagairabhisaṃnāditāṃ tarām

Resounding with the cries of swans and cranes, filled with the calling of ruddy geese, she echoed constantly with the cries of birds ever intoxicated with joy.

Shloka 20 (ayodhya.50.20)

kvacittīraruhairvṛkṣairmālābhiriva śobhitām| kvacitphullotpalacchannāṃ kvacitpadmavanākulām

Here she seemed adorned, garland-like, with trees along her banks; there she lay hidden beneath blooming lotuses, elsewhere thick with lotus-groves.

Shloka 21 (ayodhya.50.21)

kvacitkumudakhaṇḍaiśca kuḍmalairupaśobhitām| nānāpuṣparajodhvastāṃ samadāmiva ca kvacit

Here graced with clusters and buds of the white water-lily, there stained with the pollen of countless flowers, as if flushed with passion.

Shloka 22 (ayodhya.50.22)

vyapetamalasaṃghātāṃ maṇinirmaladarśanām| diśāgajairvanagajairmattaiśca varavāraṇaiḥ| devopavāhyaiśca muhuḥ saṃnāditavanāntarām

Utterly free of every impurity, clear as crystal to look upon — while, again and again, elephants of the quarters, wild elephants, rutting tuskers, and the noble elephants ridden by the gods filled her forest banks with their trumpeting.

Shloka 23 (ayodhya.50.23)

pramadāmiva yatnena bhūṣitāṃ bhūṣaṇottamaiḥ

as though a young woman had been carefully adorned with the finest of ornaments —

Shloka 24 (ayodhya.50.24)

phalaiḥ puṣpaiḥ kisalayairvṛtāṃ gulmairdvijaistathā| śiṃśumāraiśca nakraiśca bhujaṃgaiśca niṣevitām

so was she ringed about with fruit, flower, young shoot, shrub, and bird — and inhabited too by dolphins, crocodiles, and serpents.

Shloka 25 (ayodhya.50.25)

viṣṇupādacyutāṃ divyāmapāpāṃ pāpanāśinīm| tāṃ śaṅkarajaṭājūṭādbhraṣṭāṃ sāgaratejasā

Fallen from the feet of Vishnu, divine, sinless, the destroyer of sin — she who, by the ocean's own power, had once slipped free from the matted locks of Shankara —

Shloka 26 (ayodhya.50.26)

samudramahiṣīṃ gaṅgāṃ sārasakrauñcanāditām| āsasāda mahābāhuḥ śṛṅgiberapuraṃ prati

that consort of the ocean, resounding with the cries of cranes and curlews — the mighty-armed Rama reached her, near the town of Shringaverapura.

Shloka 27 (ayodhya.50.27)

tāmūrmikalilāvartāmanvavekṣya mahārathaḥ| sumantramabravītsūtamihaivādya vasāmahe

Beholding that river with its waves and eddies, the great warrior said to Sumantra: 'Here indeed shall we halt for today.'

Shloka 28 (ayodhya.50.28)

avidūrādayaṃ nadyā bahupuṣpapravālavān| sumahāniṅgudīvṛkṣo vasāmo'traiva sārathe

'Charioteer, not far from the river stands this great ingudi tree, thick with blossom and young shoots — here, right here, shall we stay.'

Shloka 29 (ayodhya.50.29)

drakṣyāmaḥ saritāṃ śreṣṭhāṃ sammānyasalilāṃ śivām| devadānavagandharvamṛgamānuṣapakṣiṇām

'From here we shall look upon this finest of rivers, so auspicious, whose waters are held in honour by gods, demons, gandharvas, beasts, men, and birds alike.'

Shloka 30 (ayodhya.50.30)

lakṣaṇaśca sumantraśca bāḍhamityeva rāghavam| uktvā tamiṅgudīvṛkṣaṃ tadopayayaturhayaiḥ

Lakshmana and Sumantra, saying to Raghava only, 'So be it,' turned the horses toward that ingudi tree.

Shloka 31 (ayodhya.50.31)

rāmo'bhiyāya taṃ ramyaṃ vṛkṣamikṣvākunandanaḥ| rathādavātarattasmātsabhāryaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ

Rama, the delight of the Ikshvaku line, drew up to that lovely tree and got down from the chariot with his wife and Lakshmana.

Shloka 32 (ayodhya.50.32)

sumantro'pyavatīryaiva mocayitvā hayottamān| vṛkṣamūlagataṃ rāmamupatasthe kṛtāñjaliḥ

Sumantra too got down, unyoked the fine horses, and came with joined palms to sit near Rama at the foot of the tree.

Shloka 33 (ayodhya.50.33)

tatra rājā guho nāma rāmasyātmasamaḥ sakhā| niṣādajātyo balavānsthapatiśceti viśrutaḥ

There a king named Guha lived, a friend as dear to Rama as his own life; born of the Nishada people, mighty of strength, renowned as lord of the Nishadas.

Shloka 34 (ayodhya.50.34)

sa śrutvā puruṣavyāghraṃ rāmaṃ viṣayamāgatam| vṛddhaiḥ parivṛto'mātyairjñātibhiścāpyupāgataḥ

Hearing that the lion among men had come into his territory, he came at once, surrounded by his elder ministers and kinsmen.

Shloka 35 (ayodhya.50.35)

tato niṣādādhipatiṃ dṛṣṭvā dūrādavasthitam| saha saumitriṇā rāmaḥ samāgacchadguhena saḥ

Then, seeing the lord of the Nishadas standing at a distance, Rama himself, with Lakshmana, went forward to meet Guha.

Shloka 36 (ayodhya.50.36)

tamārtaḥ sampariṣvajya guho rāghavamabravīt| yathāyodhyā tathedaṃ te rāma kiṃ karavāṇi te

Overcome, Guha embraced Raghava tightly and said, 'This place too is Ayodhya to you, Rama — tell me, what may I do for you?'

Shloka 37 (ayodhya.50.37)

tato guṇavadannādyamupādāya pṛthagvidham| arghyaṃ copānayatkṣipraṃ vākyaṃ cedamuvāca ha

Then, bringing food of many excellent kinds, he swiftly offered the guest-water and spoke these words.

Shloka 38 (ayodhya.50.38)

svāgataṃ te mahābāho taveyamakhilā mahī| vayaṃ preṣyā bhavānbhartā sādhu rājyaṃ praśādhi naḥ

'Welcome, mighty-armed one — all this land is yours; we are but your servants, and you our lord. Rule well over this kingdom.'

Shloka 39 (ayodhya.50.39)

bhakṣyaṃ bhojyaṃ ca peyaṃ ca lehyaṃ cedamupasthitam| śayanāni ca mukhyāni vājināṃ khādanaṃ ca te

'Here are foods to eat, to sip, to relish; excellent beds are ready for you, and fodder too for your horses.'

Shloka 40 (ayodhya.50.40)

guhameva bruvāṇaṃ taṃ rāghavaḥ pratyuvāca ha

To Guha, speaking thus, Raghava made this reply.

Shloka 41 (ayodhya.50.41)

arcitāścaiva hṛṣṭāśca bhavatā sarvathā vayam| padbhyāmabhigamāccaiva snehasandarśanena ca

'By this welcome of yours, by your coming to us on foot yourself, and by this show of affection, we are altogether honoured and gladdened.'

Shloka 42 (ayodhya.50.42)

bhujābhyāṃ sādhuvṛttābhyāṃ pīḍayanvākyamabravīt| diṣṭyā tvāṃ guha paśyāmi arogaṃ saha bāndhavaiḥ| api te kūśalaṃ rāṣṭre mitreṣu ca dhaneṣu ca

Pressing him gently with his strong arms, Rama said, 'Guha, how fortunate that I see you well, and your kinsmen too — is all well in your kingdom, with your friends, and with your wealth?'

Shloka 43 (ayodhya.50.43)

yattvidaṃ bhavatā kiṃcitprītyā samupakalpitam| sarvaṃ tadanujānāmi na hi varte pratigrahe

'Whatever you have kindly arranged for me out of affection, all of it I gladly acknowledge — but it is not my way to accept such gifts.'

Shloka 44 (ayodhya.50.44)

kuśacīrājinadharaṃ phalamūlāśanaṃ ca mām| viddhi praṇihitaṃ dharme tāpasaṃ vanagocaram

'Know me now as one clad in kusha grass, bark, and deerskin, living on fruit and root, an ascetic devoted to dharma and dwelling in the forest.'

Shloka 45 (ayodhya.50.45)

aśvānāṃ khādanenāhamarthī nānyena kenacit| etāvatātra bhavatā bhaviṣyāmi supūjitaḥ

'I ask for nothing but fodder for the horses, nothing else — grant me only this much, and I shall count myself well honoured by you.'

Shloka 46 (ayodhya.50.46)

ete hi dayitā rājñaḥ piturdaśarathasya me| etaiḥ suvihitairaśvairbhaviṣyāmyahamarcitaḥ

'These horses were dear to my father, King Dasharatha; if they are well fed and cared for, I myself shall feel honoured.'

Shloka 47 (ayodhya.50.47)

aśvānāṃ pratipānaṃ ca khādanaṃ caiva so'nvaśāt| guhastatraiva puruṣāṃstvaritaṃ dīyatāmiti

Guha at once commanded his men there: 'Let water and fodder for the horses be brought without delay.'

Shloka 48 (ayodhya.50.48)

tataścīrottarāsaṅgaḥ sandhyāmanvāsya paścimām| jalamevādade bhojyaṃ lakṣmaṇenāhṛtaṃ svayam

Then, wearing a garment of bark, having offered his devotions to the evening twilight in the west, Rama took only the water Lakshmana himself had brought, as his meal.

Shloka 49 (ayodhya.50.49)

tasya bhūmau śayānasya pādau prakṣālya lakṣmaṇaḥ| sabhāryasya tato'bhyetya tasthau vṛkṣamupāśritaḥ

Having washed the feet of Rama, lying on the ground with his wife, Lakshmana then came and stood, leaning against a tree.

Shloka 50 (ayodhya.50.50)

guho'pi saha sūtena saumitrimanubhāṣayan| anvajāgrattato rāmamapramatto dhanurdharaḥ

Guha too, conversing with Lakshmana together with the charioteer, kept watch over Rama, alert, bow in hand.

Shloka 51 (ayodhya.50.51)

tathā śayānasya tato'sya dhīmato| yaśasvino dāśarathermahātmanaḥ| adṛṣṭaduḥkhasya sukhocitasya sā| tadā vyatīyāya cireṇa śarvarī

So, lying there upon the ground, that illustrious, noble-hearted son of Dasharatha — who had never known suffering and deserved only comfort — passed that long night, which at last, slowly, drew to its end.
