Bharata's Curse and Kausalya's Grief

Shloka 1 (ayodhya.75.1)

दीर्घकालात्समुत्थाय संज्ञां लब्ध्वा च वीर्यवान्। नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां दीनामुद्वीक्ष्य मातरम्॥ 75.1 ॥

dīrghakālāt samutthāya saṃjñāṃ labdhvā ca vīryavān| netrābhyām aśrupūrṇābhyāṃ dīnām udvīkṣya mātaram

After a long while, the valiant Bharata rose and came back to his senses; looking upon his wretched mother with tear-filled eyes,

Shloka 2 (ayodhya.75.2)

सोऽमात्यमध्ये भरतो जननीमभ्यकुत्सयत्। राज्यं न कामये जातु मन्त्रये नापि मातरम्॥ 75.2 ॥

so'mātyamadhye bharato jananīm abhyakutsayat| rājyaṃ na kāmaye jātu mantraye nāpi mātaram

Bharata, in the midst of the ministers, denounced his own mother: "I have never desired the kingdom, nor did I ever consult even my own mother about it.

Shloka 3 (ayodhya.75.3)

अभिषेकं न जानामि योऽभूद्राज्ञा समीक्षितः। विप्रकृष्टे ह्यहं देशे शत्रुघ्नसहितोऽवसम्॥ 75.3 ॥

abhiṣekaṃ na jānāmi yo'bhūd rājñā samīkṣitaḥ| viprakṛṣṭe hy ahaṃ deśe śatrughnasahito'vasam

I knew nothing at all of the coronation the king had planned, for I was living far away, in a distant land, with Shatrughna.

Shloka 4 (ayodhya.75.4)

वनवासं न जानामि रामस्याहं महात्मनः। विवासनं वा सौमित्रेः सीतायाश्च यथाभवत्॥ 75.4 ॥

vanavāsaṃ na jānāmi rāmasyāhaṃ mahātmanaḥ| vivāsanaṃ vā saumitreḥ sītāyāś ca yathābhavat

I did not know how the noble Rama came to be sent to the forest, nor how the exile of Lakshmana and Sita came about."

Shloka 5 (ayodhya.75.5)

तथैव क्रोशतस्तस्य भरतस्य महात्मनः। कौसल्या शब्दमाज्ञाय सुमित्रामिदमब्रवीत्॥ 75.5 ॥

tathaiva krośatas tasya bharatasya mahātmanaḥ| kausalyā śabdam ājñāya sumitrām idam abravīt

Recognizing the voice of the noble Bharata crying out in this manner, Kausalya said this to Sumitra.

Shloka 6 (ayodhya.75.6)

आगतः क्रूरकार्यायाः कैकेय्या भरतः सुतः। तमहं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि भरतं दीर्घदर्शिनम्॥ 75.6 ॥

āgataḥ krūrakāryāyāḥ kaikeyyā bharataḥ sutaḥ| tam ahaṃ draṣṭum icchāmi bharataṃ dīrghadarśinam

"Bharata, son of that cruelly-acting Kaikeyi, has arrived. I wish to see that far-sighted Bharata."

Shloka 7 (ayodhya.75.7)

एवमुक्त्वा सुमित्रां सा विवर्णा मलिनांबरा। प्रतस्थे भरतो यत्र वेपमाना विचेतना॥ 75.7 ॥

evam uktvā sumitrāṃ sā vivarṇā malināṃbarā| pratasthe bharato yatra vepamānā vicetanā

Having said this to Sumitra, she, pale-faced and in soiled garments, trembling and beside herself, set out toward where Bharata was.

Shloka 8 (ayodhya.75.8)

स तु रामानुजश्चापि शत्रुघ्नसहितस्तदा। प्रतस्थे भरतो यत्र कौसल्याया निवेशनम्॥ 75.8 ॥

sa tu rāmānujaś cāpi śatrughnasahitas tadā| pratasthe bharato yatra kausalyāyā niveśanam

And meanwhile Rama's younger brother Bharata, together with Shatrughna, was himself setting out toward Kausalya's apartments.

Shloka 9 (ayodhya.75.9)

ततः शत्रुघ्नभरतौ कौसल्यां प्रेक्ष्य दुःखितौ। पर्यष्वजेतां दुःखार्तां पतितां नष्टचेतनाम्॥ 75.9 ॥

tataḥ śatrughnabharatau kausalyāṃ prekṣya duḥkhitau| paryaṣvajetāṃ duḥkhārtāṃ patitāṃ naṣṭacetanām

Seeing Kausalya thus, Shatrughna and Bharata, both grieving, went to her and embraced her, anguished, fallen, and bereft of her senses.

Shloka 10 (ayodhya.75.10)

रुदन्तौ रुदतीं दुःखात्समेत्यार्यां मनस्विनीम्। भरतं प्रत्युवाचेदं कौसल्या भृशदुःखिता॥ 75.10 ॥

rudantau rudatīṃ duḥkhāt sametyāryāṃ manasvinīm| bharataṃ pratyuvācedaṃ kausalyā bhṛśaduḥkhitā

Weeping themselves, they came to her, that noble and high-minded woman weeping in her grief; and Kausalya, utterly overcome with sorrow, spoke these words to Bharata.

Shloka 11 (ayodhya.75.11)

इदं ते राज्यकामस्य राज्यं प्राप्तमकण्टकम्। संप्राप्तं बत कैकेय्याः शीघ्रं क्रूरेण कर्मणा॥ 75.11 ॥

idaṃ te rājyakāmasya rājyaṃ prāptam akaṇṭakam| saṃprāptaṃ bata kaikeyyāḥ śīghraṃ krūreṇa karmaṇā

"So you, who longed for the kingdom, have obtained this unrivalled realm! Alas, how swiftly it has come to you, through Kaikeyi's cruel act!

Shloka 12 (ayodhya.75.12)

प्रस्थाप्य चीरवसनं पुत्रं मे वनवासिनम्। कैकेयी कं गुणं तत्र पश्यति क्रूरदर्शिनी॥ 75.12 ॥

prasthāpya cīravasanaṃ putraṃ me vanavāsinam| kaikeyī kaṃ guṇaṃ tatra paśyati krūradarśinī

Having sent my son off to dwell in the forest, dressed in bark, what benefit does that cruel-eyed Kaikeyi imagine she has gained?

Shloka 13 (ayodhya.75.13)

क्षिप्रं मामपि कैकेयी प्रस्थापयितुमर्हति। हिरण्यनाभो यत्रास्ते सुतो मे सुमहायशाः॥ 75.13 ॥

kṣipraṃ mām api kaikeyī prasthāpayitum arhati| hiraṇyanābho yatrāste suto me sumahāyaśāḥ

Kaikeyi should likewise send me at once to that place where my most illustrious, golden-marked son now dwells.

Shloka 14 (ayodhya.75.14)

अथवा स्वयमेवाहं सुमित्रानुचरा सुखम्। अग्निहोत्रं पुरस्कृत्य प्रस्थास्ये यत्र राघवः॥ 75.14 ॥

athavā svayam evāhaṃ sumitrānucarā sukham| agnihotraṃ puraskṛtya prasthāsye yatra rāghavaḥ

Or rather, I myself, with Sumitra beside me, taking the sacred fire before me, shall gladly set out to wherever Raghava may be.

Shloka 15 (ayodhya.75.15)

कामं वा स्वयमेवाद्य तत्र मां नेतुमर्हसि। यत्रासौ पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तप्यते मे तपः सुतः॥ 75.15 ॥

kāmaṃ vā svayam evādya tatra māṃ netum arhasi| yatrāsau puruṣavyāghras tapyate me tapaḥ sutaḥ

Or, if you would rather, take me yourself this very day to where that tiger among men, my son, now performs his austerities.

Shloka 16 (ayodhya.75.16)

इदं हि तव विस्तीर्णं धनधान्यसमाचितम्। हस्त्यश्वरथसंपूर्णं राज्यं निर्यातितं तया॥ 75.16 ॥

idaṃ hi tava vistīrṇaṃ dhanadhānyasamācitam| hastyaśvarathasampūrṇaṃ rājyaṃ niryātitaṃ tayā

So it is that this vast kingdom, stocked with wealth and grain, full of elephants, horses, and chariots, has been handed over to you by her."

Shloka 17 (ayodhya.75.17)

इत्यादिबहुभिर्वाक्यैः क्रूरैः संभर्त्सितोऽनघः। विव्यथे भरतस्तीव्रं व्रणे तुद्येव सूचिना॥ 75.17 ॥

ity ādibahubhir vākyaiḥ krūrair saṃbhartsito'naghaḥ| vivyathe bharatas tīvraṃ vraṇe tudyeva sūcinā

Rebuked with these and many other such harsh words, the blameless Bharata was struck with intense pain, as though a needle had been driven into an open wound.

Shloka 18 (ayodhya.75.18)

पपात चरणौ तस्यास्तदा संभ्रान्तचेतनः। विलप्य बहुधासंज्ञो लब्धसंज्ञस्ततः स्थितः॥ 75.18 ॥

papāta caraṇau tasyās tadā saṃbhrāntacetanaḥ| vilapya bahudhāsaṃjño labdhasaṃjñas tataḥ sthitaḥ

His mind reeling, he fell at her feet; wailing again and again he lost all awareness, then, coming back to his senses, stood up.

Shloka 19 (ayodhya.75.19)

एवं विलपमानां तां भरतः प्राञ्जलिस्तदा। कौसल्यां प्रत्युवाचेदं शोकैर्बहुभिरावृताम्॥ 75.19 ॥

evaṃ vilapamānāṃ tāṃ bharataḥ prāñjalis tadā| kausalyāṃ pratyuvācedaṃ śokair bahubhir āvṛtām

Then, with joined palms, Bharata replied thus to Kausalya, lamenting so, wrapped about by so many sorrows.

Shloka 20 (ayodhya.75.20)

आर्ये कस्मादजानन्तं गर्हसे मामकिल्बिषम्। विपुलां च मम प्रीतिं स्थिरां जानासि राघवे॥ 75.20 ॥

ārye kasmād ajānantaṃ garhase mām akilbiṣam| vipulāṃ ca mama prītiṃ sthirāṃ jānāsi rāghave

"Noble one, why do you reproach me — innocent, and ignorant of all this? You yourself know how deep and unshakeable my love for Raghava is.

Shloka 21 (ayodhya.75.21)

कृता शास्त्रानुगा बुद्धिर्मा भूत्तस्य कदाचन। सत्यसन्धः सतां श्रेष्ठो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.21 ॥

kṛtā śāstrānugā buddhir mā bhūt tasya kadācana| satyasandhaḥ satāṃ śreṣṭho yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May the man by whose counsel my noble brother — truthful, foremost among the virtuous — went into exile, never have a mind that follows the scriptures.

Shloka 22 (ayodhya.75.22)

प्रैष्यं पापीयसां यातु सूर्यं च प्रति मेहतु। हन्तु पादेन गां सुप्तां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.22 ॥

praiṣyaṃ pāpīyasāṃ yātu sūryaṃ ca prati mehatu| hantu pādena gāṃ suptāṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he become the servant of the vilest of men, may he pass water facing the sun, may he kick a sleeping cow with his foot — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 23 (ayodhya.75.23)

कारयित्वा महत्कर्म भर्ता भृत्यमनर्थकम्। अधर्मो योऽस्य सोऽस्यास्तु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.23 ॥

kārayitvā mahat karma bhartā bhṛtyam anarthakam| adharmo yo'sya so'syāstu yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May the sin fall on him that falls upon a master who makes his servant perform great labor and pays him nothing — on him by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 24 (ayodhya.75.24)

परिपालयमानस्य राज्ञो भूतानि पुत्रवत्। ततस्तु द्रुह्यतां पापं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.24 ॥

paripālayamānasya rājño bhūtāni putravat| tatas tu druhyatāṃ pāpaṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May the sin fall on him that falls upon one who betrays a king who guards his people as his own children — on him by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 25 (ayodhya.75.25)

बलिषड्भागमुद्धृत्य नृपस्यारक्षतः प्रजाः। अधर्मो योऽस्य सोऽस्यास्तु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.25 ॥

baliṣaḍbhāgam uddhṛtya nṛpasyārakṣataḥ prajāḥ| adharmo yo'sya so'syāstu yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May the sin fall on him that falls upon a king who takes a sixth part of his people's produce yet fails to protect them — on him by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 26 (ayodhya.75.26)

संश्रुत्य च तपस्विभ्यः सत्रे वै यज्ञदक्षिणाम्। तां विप्रलपतां पापं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.26 ॥

saṃśrutya ca tapasvibhyaḥ satre vai yajñadakṣiṇām| tāṃ vipralapatāṃ pāpaṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May the sin fall on him that falls upon one who promises sacrificial fees to ascetics at a rite and then reneges on it — on him by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 27 (ayodhya.75.27)

हस्त्यश्वरथसंबाधे युद्धे शस्त्रसमाकुले। मा स्म कार्षीत्सतां धर्मं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.27 ॥

hastyaśvarathasaṃbādhe yuddhe śastrasamākule| mā sma kārṣīt satāṃ dharmaṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he never uphold the code of the virtuous in a battle crowded with elephants, horses, chariots, and weapons — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 28 (ayodhya.75.28)

उपदिष्टं सुसूक्ष्मार्थं शास्त्रं यत्नेन धीमता। स नाशयतु दुष्टात्मा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.28 ॥

upadiṣṭaṃ susūkṣmārthaṃ śāstraṃ yatnena dhīmatā| sa nāśayatu duṣṭātmā yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May that wicked soul forget every subtle teaching so carefully imparted to him by a wise preceptor — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 29 (ayodhya.75.29)

मा च तं व्यूढबाह्वंसं चन्द्रार्कसंतेजसम्। द्राक्षीद्राज्यस्थमासीनं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.29 ॥

mā ca taṃ vyūḍhabāhvaṃsaṃ candrārkasaṃtejasam| drākṣīd rājyastham āsīnaṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he never behold Rama — broad of arm and shoulder, radiant as the sun and moon — seated upon the throne, that man by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 30 (ayodhya.75.30)

पायसं कृसरं छागं वृथा सोऽश्नातु निर्घृणः। गुरूंश्चाप्यवजानातु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.30 ॥

pāyasaṃ kṛsaraṃ chāgaṃ vṛthā so'śnātu nirghṛṇaḥ| agurūṃś cāpy avajānātu yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May that pitiless man eat rice-pudding, khichdi, and goat's flesh without offering them first, and treat his teachers with contempt — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 31 (ayodhya.75.31)

गाश्च स्पृशतु पादेन गुरून्परिवदेत्स्वयम्। मित्रे द्रुह्येत सोऽत्यन्तं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.31 ॥

gāś ca spṛśatu pādena gurūn parivadet svayam| mitre druhyeta so'tyantaṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he touch cows with his foot, personally revile his teachers, and betray his friend most grievously — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 32 (ayodhya.75.32)

विश्वासात्कथितं किंचित्परिवादं मिथः क्वचित्। विवृणोतु स दुष्टात्मा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.32 ॥

viśvāsāt kathitaṃ kiṃcit parivādaṃ mithaḥ kvacit| vivṛṇotu sa duṣṭātmā yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May that wicked soul betray any secret confidence, any private word ever spoken to him in trust — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 33 (ayodhya.75.33)

अकर्ता ह्यकृतज्ञश्च त्यक्तात्मा निरपत्रपः। लोके भवतु विद्वेष्यो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.33 ॥

akartā hy akṛtajñaś ca tyaktātmā nirapatrapaḥ| loke bhavatu vidveṣyo yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he become idle, ungrateful, a man abandoned by his own soul, shameless, and hated throughout the world — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 34 (ayodhya.75.34)

पुत्रैर्दारैश्च भृत्यैश्च स्वगृहे परिवारितः। स एको मृष्टमश्नातु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.34 ॥

putrair dāraiś ca bhṛtyaiś ca svagṛhe parivāritaḥ| sa eko mṛṣṭam aśnātu yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he, even surrounded in his own house by sons, wife, and servants, eat his fine food alone — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 35 (ayodhya.75.35)

अप्राप्य सदृशान्दारानपत्यः प्रमीयताम्। अनवाप्य क्रियां धर्म्यां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.35 ॥

aprāpya sadṛśān dārān anapatyaḥ pramīyatām| anavāpya kriyāṃ dharmyāṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he die childless, never finding a wife fit for him, never fulfilling his sacred duties — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 36 (ayodhya.75.36)

मात्मनः संततिं द्राक्षीत्स्वेषु दारेषु दुःखितः। आयुः समग्रमप्राप्य यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.36 ॥

mātmanaḥ saṃtatiṃ drākṣīt sveṣu dāreṣu duḥkhitaḥ| āyuḥ samagram aprāpya yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he never see his own offspring by his own wife, but live in misery, and never attain a full life span — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 37 (ayodhya.75.37)

राजस्त्रीबालवृद्धानां वधे यत्पापमुच्यते। भृत्यत्यागे च यत्पापं तत्पापं प्रतिपद्यताम्॥ 75.37 ॥

rājastrībālavṛddhānāṃ vadhe yat pāpam ucyate| bhṛtyatyāge ca yat pāpaṃ tat pāpaṃ pratipadyatām

May he incur the same sin that is declared for the killing of a king, a woman, a child, or an old person, and the same sin declared for abandoning one's dependents.

Shloka 38 (ayodhya.75.38)

लाक्षया मधुमांसेन लोहेन च विषेण च। सदैव बिभृयाद्भृत्यान् यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.38 ॥

lākṣayā madhumāṃsena lohena ca viṣeṇa ca| sadaiva bibhṛyād bhṛtyān yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he be forced to support his dependents always by trading in lac, meat and liquor, iron, and poison — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 39 (ayodhya.75.39)

संग्रामे समुपोढे स शत्रुपक्षभयंकरे। पलायमानो वध्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.39 ॥

saṃgrāme samupoḍhe sa śatrupakṣabhayaṃkare| palāyamāno vadhyeta yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

When battle is joined, terrible to the enemy's side, may he be slain while fleeing from it — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 40 (ayodhya.75.40)

कपालपाणिः पृथिवीमटतां चीरसंवृतः। भिक्षमाणो यथोन्मत्तो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.40 ॥

kapālapāṇiḥ pṛthivīm aṭatāṃ cīrasaṃvṛtaḥ| bhikṣamāṇo yathonmatto yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he wander the earth, bowl in hand, clad in rags, begging like a madman — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 41 (ayodhya.75.41)

पाने प्रसक्तो भवतु स्त्रीष्वक्षेषु च नित्यशः। कामक्रोधाभिभूतस्तु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.41 ॥

pāne prasakto bhavatu strīṣv akṣeṣu ca nityaśaḥ| kāmakrodhābhibhūtas tu yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he be forever addicted to drink, to women, and to dice, forever overpowered by lust and anger — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 42 (ayodhya.75.42)

यस्य धर्मे मनो भूयादधर्मं स निषेवताम्। अपात्रवर्षी भवतु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.42 ॥

yasya dharme mano bhūyād adharmaṃ sa niṣevatām| apātravarṣī bhavatu yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May his mind never turn toward righteousness — may he practice only unrighteousness, and give his gifts only to the unworthy — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 43 (ayodhya.75.43)

संचितान्यस्य वित्तानि विविधानि सहस्रशः। दस्युभिर्विप्रलुप्यन्तां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.43 ॥

saṃcitāny asya vittāni vividhāni sahasraśaḥ| dasyubhir vipralupyantāṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May all his wealth, gathered in a thousand ways over the years, be plundered away by robbers — his, by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 44 (ayodhya.75.44)

उभे संध्ये शयानस्य यत्पापं परिकल्प्यते। तच्च पापं भवेत्तस्य यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.44 ॥

ubhe saṃdhye śayānasya yat pāpaṃ parikalpyate| tac ca pāpaṃ bhavet tasya yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May the sin fall upon him too, that is reckoned for the man who sleeps through both the dawn and dusk twilights — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 45 (ayodhya.75.45)

यदग्निदायके पापं यत्पापं गुरुतल्पगे। मित्रद्रोहे च यत्पापं तत्पापं प्रतिपद्यताम्॥ 75.45 ॥

yad agnidāyake pāpaṃ yat pāpaṃ gurutalpage| mitradrohe ca yat pāpaṃ tat pāpaṃ pratipadyatām

May he obtain the sin of an arsonist, the sin of one who defiles his teacher's bed, and the sin of one who betrays a friend.

Shloka 46 (ayodhya.75.46)

देवतानां पितॄणां च मातापित्रोस्तथैव च। मा स्म कार्षीत्स शुश्रूषां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.46 ॥

devatānāṃ pitṝṇāṃ ca mātāpitros tathaiva ca| mā sma kārṣīt sa śuśrūṣāṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he never be able to perform his duties of worship to the gods, to the ancestors, or to his own mother and father — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 47 (ayodhya.75.47)

सतां लोकात्सतां कीर्त्याः सज्जुष्टात्कर्मणस्तथा। भ्रश्यतु क्षिप्रमद्यैव यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.47 ॥

satāṃ lokāt satāṃ kīrtyāḥ sajjuṣṭāt karmaṇas tathā| bhraśyatu kṣipram adyaiva yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he fall at once, this very day, from the world of the virtuous, from the fame of the virtuous, and from the deeds cherished by the virtuous — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 48 (ayodhya.75.48)

अपास्य मातृशुश्रूषामनर्थे सोऽवतिष्ठताम्। दीर्घबाहुर्महावक्षा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.48 ॥

apāsya mātṛśuśrūṣām anarthe so'vatiṣṭhatām| dīrghabāhur mahāvakṣā yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

Having cast aside all service to the mother of my long-armed, broad-chested noble brother, may he sink forever into futility — he by whose counsel that brother went away.

Shloka 49 (ayodhya.75.49)

बहुपुत्रो दरिद्रश्च ज्वररोगसमन्वितः। स भूयात्सततक्लेशी यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.49 ॥

bahuputro daridraś ca jvararogasamanvitaḥ| sa bhūyāt satatakleśī yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he have many sons yet remain destitute, be afflicted with fever and disease, and live forever in distress — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 50 (ayodhya.75.50)

आशामाशंसमानानां दीनानामूर्ध्वचक्षुषाम्। अर्थिनां वितथां कुर्याद्यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.50 ॥

āśām āśaṃsamānānāṃ dīnānām ūrdhvacakṣuṣām| arthināṃ vitathāṃ kuryād yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he dash the hopes of the wretched, needy people who look up with pleading eyes, begging for aid — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 51 (ayodhya.75.51)

मायया रमतां नित्यं परुषः पिशुनोऽशुचिः। राज्ञो भीतस्त्वधर्मात्मा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.51 ॥

māyayā ramatāṃ nityaṃ paruṣaḥ piśuno'śuciḥ| rājño bhītas tv adharmātmā yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he, harsh, slandering, impure, unrighteous of soul, live forever delighting only in deceit, and forever in fear of the king — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 52 (ayodhya.75.52)

ऋतुस्नातां सतीं भार्यामृतुकालानुरोधिनीम्। अतिवर्तेत दुष्टात्मा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.52 ॥

ṛtusnātāṃ satīṃ bhāryām ṛtukālānurodhinīm| ativarteta duṣṭātmā yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May that evil soul turn away from his own virtuous wife, bathed after her courses and awaiting the fitting season — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 53 (ayodhya.75.53)

धर्मदारान्परित्यज्य परदारान्निषेवताम्। त्यक्तधर्मरतिर्मूढो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.53 ॥

dharmadārān parityajya paradārān niṣevatām| tyaktadharmaratir mūḍho yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May that fool, having abandoned all love of righteousness, forsake his own lawful wife and pursue the wife of another — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 54 (ayodhya.75.54)

विप्रलुप्तप्रजातस्य दुष्कृतं ब्राह्मणस्य यत्। तदेव प्रतिपद्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.54 ॥

vipraluptaprajātasya duṣkṛtaṃ brāhmaṇasya yat| tad eva pratipadyeta yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he obtain that very sin which befalls the brahmin whose line of descendants is cut off — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 55 (ayodhya.75.55)

पानीयदूषके पापं तथैव विषदायके। यत्तदेकः स लभतां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.55 ॥

pānīyadūṣake pāpaṃ tathaiva viṣadāyake| yat tad ekaḥ sa labhatāṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he alone incur the sin that falls upon one who poisons drinking water, and likewise upon one who administers poison — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 56 (ayodhya.75.56)

ब्राह्मणायोद्यतां पूजां विहन्तु कलुषेन्द्रियः। बालवत्सां च गां दोग्धुं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.56 ॥

brāhmaṇāyodyatāṃ pūjāṃ vihantu kaluṣendriyaḥ| bālavatsāṃ ca gāṃ dogdhuṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he, corrupt of senses, disrupt worship being offered to a brahmin, and milk a cow that still has a young calf — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 57 (ayodhya.75.57)

तृष्णार्तं सति पानीये विप्रलम्भेन योजयेत्। लभेत तस्य यत्पापं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.57 ॥

tṛṣṇārtaṃ sati pānīye vipralambhena yojayet| labheta tasya yat pāpaṃ yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he obtain the sin of one who deceives and disappoints a man tormented by thirst even when water is at hand — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 58 (ayodhya.75.58)

भक्त्या विवदमानेषु मार्गमाश्रित्य पश्यतः। तस्य पापेन युज्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥ 75.58 ॥

bhaktyā vivadamāneṣu mārgam āśritya paśyataḥ| tasya pāpena yujyeta yasyāryo'numate gataḥ

May he share in the sin of one who merely stands by the road and watches those in dispute, without stepping in faithfully to help — he by whose counsel my noble brother went away.

Shloka 59 (ayodhya.75.59)

विहीनां पतिपुत्राभ्यां कौसल्यां पार्थिवात्मजः। एवमाश्वासयन्नेव दुःखार्तो निपपात ह॥ 75.59 ॥

vihīnāṃ patiputrābhyāṃ kausalyāṃ pārthivātmajaḥ| evam āśvāsayann eva duḥkhārto nipapāta ha

Even as he spoke on, trying to console Kausalya, bereft now of both husband and son, the prince, overwhelmed with grief, collapsed.

Shloka 60 (ayodhya.75.60)

तथा तु शपथैः कष्टैः शपमानमचेतनम्। भरतं शोकसंतप्तं कौसल्या वाक्यमब्रवीत्॥ 75.60 ॥

tathā tu śapathaiḥ kaṣṭaiḥ śapamānam acetanam| bharataṃ śokasaṃtaptaṃ kausalyā vākyam abravīt

To Bharata, thus uttering such terrible curses, senseless and consumed with grief, Kausalya then spoke these words.

Shloka 61 (ayodhya.75.61)

मम दुःखमिदं पुत्र भूयः समुपजायते। शपथैः शपमानो हि प्राणानुपरुणत्सि मे॥ 75.61 ॥

mama duḥkham idaṃ putra bhūyaḥ samupajāyate| śapathaiḥ śapamāno hi prāṇān uparuṇatsi me

"My son, this only deepens my grief still further. By uttering these curses, you are truly tormenting my very life-breath.

Shloka 62 (ayodhya.75.62)

दिष्ट्या न चलितो धर्मादात्मा ते सह लक्ष्मणः। वत्स सत्यप्रतिज्ञो मे सतां लोकानवाप्स्यसि॥ 75.62 ॥

diṣṭyā na calito dharmād ātmā te saha lakṣmaṇaḥ| vatsa satyapratijño me satāṃ lokān avāpsyasi

Fortunately, your soul, like Lakshmana's, has never strayed from righteousness. My child, true to your word as you are, you shall attain, together with Lakshmana, the worlds of the virtuous."

Shloka 63 (ayodhya.75.63)

इत्युक्त्वा चाङ्कमानीय भरतं भ्रातृवत्सलम्। परिष्वज्य महाबाहुं रुरोद भृशदुःखिता॥ 75.63 ॥

ity uktvā cāṅkam ānīya bharataṃ bhrātṛvatsalam| pariṣvajya mahābāhuṃ ruroda bhṛśaduḥkhitā

Having said this, she drew the mighty-armed Bharata, so devoted to his brother, onto her lap, embraced him, and, overwhelmed with grief, wept aloud.

Shloka 64 (ayodhya.75.64)

एवं विलपमानस्य दुःखार्तस्य महात्मनः। मोहाच्च शोकसंरोधाद्बभूव लुलितं मनः॥ 75.64 ॥

evaṃ vilapamānasya duḥkhārtasya mahātmanaḥ| mohāc ca śokasaṃrodhād babhūva lulitaṃ manaḥ

As that noble soul lamented so, tormented with grief, his mind, overwhelmed by confusion and the crush of sorrow, was thrown into utter turmoil.

Shloka 65 (ayodhya.75.65)

लालप्यमानस्य विचेतनस्य प्रनष्टबुद्धेः पतितस्य भूमौ। मुहुर्मुहुर्निःश्वसतश्च दीर्घं सा तस्य शोकेन जगाम रात्रिः॥ 75.65 ॥

lālapyamānasya vicetanasya pranaṣṭabuddheḥ patitasya bhūmau| muhur muhur niḥśvasataś ca dīrghaṃ sā tasya śokena jagāma rātriḥ

So, lamenting on, senseless, his reason lost, fallen upon the ground, sighing long and heavy again and again — that whole night passed for him in grief.
