Sarga 86All sargasSarga 88

Shloka 1 (ayodhya.87.1)

guhasya vacanam śrutvā bharato bhṛśam apriyam | dhyānam jagāma tatraiva yatra tat śrutam apriyam || 87.1 ||

Hearing Guha's most unwelcome words, Bharata sank into deep thought, his mind fixed on the very matter those unwelcome words concerned.

Shloka 2 (ayodhya.87.2)

sukumāro mahāsattvaḥ siṃhaskandho mahābhujaḥ | puṇḍarīka viśālākṣaḥ taruṇaḥ priya darśanaḥ || 87.2 ||

That gentle yet mighty prince, with shoulders like a lion's and powerful arms, his large eyes like lotus petals, youthful and pleasing to behold—

Shloka 3 (ayodhya.87.3)

pratyāśvasya muhūrtam tu kālam parama durmanāḥ | papāta sahasā totrair hṛdi viddha iva dvipaḥ || 87.3 ||

—after staying conscious for only a moment, in the depth of his anguish, suddenly collapsed, like an elephant struck to the heart by the goad.

Shloka 4 (ayodhya.87.4)

bharatam mūrcchitam dṛṣṭvā vivarṇavadano guhaḥ | babhūva vyathitas tatra bhūmikampe yathā drumaḥ || 87.4 ||

Seeing Bharata fallen senseless, Guha's face turned pale, and he trembled there like a tree shaken by an earthquake.

Shloka 5 (ayodhya.87.5)

tad avastham tu bharatam śatrughno'nantara sthitaḥ | pariṣvajya ruroda uccair visaṃjñaḥ śoka karśitaḥ || 87.5 ||

Shatrughna, who stood close by, clasped Bharata—lying senseless in that state—in his arms, and, overwhelmed and half-conscious with grief, wept aloud.

Shloka 6 (ayodhya.87.6)

tataḥ sarvāḥ samāpetur mātaro bharatasya tāḥ | upavāsa kṛśā dīnā bhartṛ vyasana karśitāḥ || 87.6 ||

Then all of Bharata's mothers came rushing there—emaciated by fasting, wretched, worn down with grief over their lord's misfortune.

Shloka 7 (ayodhya.87.7)

tāś ca tam patitam bhūmau rudantyaḥ paryavārayan | kausalyā tu anusṛtya enam durmanāḥ pariṣasvaje || 87.7 ||

Weeping, they surrounded him where he lay fallen on the ground; and Kausalya, going to him with a heavy heart, embraced him.

Shloka 8 (ayodhya.87.8)

vatsalā svam yathā vatsam upagūhya tapasvinī | paripapraccha bharatam rudantī śoka lālasā || 87.8 ||

That loving, careworn mother, pressing him to her heart as a cow presses her calf, wept and, tormented with grief, questioned Bharata:

Shloka 9 (ayodhya.87.9)

putra vyādhir na te kaccit śarīram paribādhate | adya rāja kulasya asya tvad adhīnam hi jīvitam || 87.9 ||

'My son, I hope no illness afflicts your body. The very life of this royal line now depends on you alone.'

Shloka 10 (ayodhya.87.10)

tvām dṛṣṭvā putra jīvāmi rāme sabhrātṛke gate | vṛtte daśarathe rājñi nātha ekaḥ tvam adya naḥ || 87.10 ||

'My son, it is the sight of you that keeps me alive, now that Rama has gone to the forest with his brother and King Dasharatha has passed away. You alone are our protector today.'

Shloka 11 (ayodhya.87.11)

kaccin na lakṣmaṇe putra śrutam te kiṃcid apriyam | putre vā hy ekaputrāyāḥ saha bhārye vanam gate || 87.11 ||

'I hope, my son, you have heard no unhappy news of Lakshmana, or of Rama, my one and only son, who has gone to the forest together with his wife.'

Shloka 12 (ayodhya.87.12)

sa muhūrtam samāśvasya rudann eva mahāyaśāḥ | kausalyām parisāntvya idam guham vacanam abravīt || 87.12 ||

That renowned prince, composing himself for a moment, and even while still weeping, consoled Kausalya and spoke these words to Guha:

Shloka 13 (ayodhya.87.13)

bhrātā me kva avasad rātrim kva sītā kva ca lakṣmaṇaḥ | asvapat śayane kasmin kim bhuktvā guha śaṃsa me || 87.13 ||

'Where did my brother pass the night, O Guha? Where were Sita and Lakshmana? On what bed did he sleep, and after eating what? Tell me.'

Shloka 14 (ayodhya.87.14)

so'bravīd bharatam pṛṣṭo niṣādādhipatir guhaḥ | yadvidham pratipede ca rāme priya hite atithau || 87.14 ||

Thus asked, Guha, lord of the Nishadas, told Bharata in what manner he had received Rama, his beloved and gracious guest.

Shloka 15 (ayodhya.87.15)

annam uccāvacam bhakṣyāḥ phalāni vividhāni ca | rāmāya abhyavahāra artham bahu ca upahṛtam mayā || 87.15 ||

'I brought Rama food of many kinds, delicacies, and fruits of every sort, again and again, for his meal.'

Shloka 16 (ayodhya.87.16)

tat sarvam pratyanujñāsīd rāmaḥ satya parākramaḥ | na hi tat pratyagṛhṇāt sa kṣatra dharmam anusmaran || 87.16 ||

'But Rama, whose valour is true, declined it all. Mindful of the duty of a kshatriya, he would not accept it.'

Shloka 17 (ayodhya.87.17)

na hy asmābhiḥ pratigrāhyam sakhe deyam tu sarvadā | iti tena vayam rājann anunītā mahātmanā || 87.17 ||

'"Friend, it is not for us to receive—we must always be the givers," said that noble prince, and so, O king, he set our minds at rest.'

Shloka 18 (ayodhya.87.18)

lakṣmaṇena samānītam pītvā vāri mahāyaśāḥ | aupavāsyam tadā akārṣīd rāghavaḥ saha sītayā || 87.18 ||

The illustrious Rama, drinking only the water Lakshmana had brought, kept a fast that day, together with Sita.

Shloka 19 (ayodhya.87.19)

tatas tu jala śeṣeṇa lakṣmaṇo'py akarot tadā | vāgyatāḥ te trayaḥ saṃdhyām upāsata samāhitāḥ || 87.19 ||

Then Lakshmana too did the same with what water remained, and the three of them, keeping silence, performed the evening rites together with focused minds.

Shloka 20 (ayodhya.87.20)

saumitriḥ tu tataḥ paścād akarot svāstaram śubham | svayam ānīya barhīṃṣi kṣipram rāghava kāraṇāt || 87.20 ||

After that, Lakshmana himself quickly gathered blades of grass and, for Rama's sake, made a fitting bed of them.

Shloka 21 (ayodhya.87.21)

tasmin samāviśad rāmaḥ svāstare saha sītayā | prakṣālya ca tayoḥ pādau apacakrāma lakṣmaṇaḥ || 87.21 ||

Rama lay down on that bed together with Sita, and Lakshmana, after washing the feet of both, withdrew to a little distance.

Shloka 22 (ayodhya.87.22)

etat tad iṅgudī mūlam idam eva ca tat tṛṇam | yasmin rāmaś ca sītā ca rātrim tām śayitau ubhau || 87.22 ||

'This is that same foot of the Ingudi tree, and this the very bed of grass on which Rama and Sita, both of them, spent that night.'

Shloka 23 (ayodhya.87.23)

niyamya pṛṣṭhe tu talāṅgulitravān | śaraiḥ supūrṇau iṣudhī parantapaḥ | mahaddhanuḥ sajyam upohya lakṣmaṇo | niśām atiṣṭhat parito'sya kevalam || 87.23 ||

Strapping the leather finger-guards on his hands, quivers full of arrows on his back, and taking up his great bow strung and ready, Lakshmana, scourge of the foe, kept watch alone around Rama the whole night through.

Shloka 24 (ayodhya.87.24)

tatas tu aham ca uttama bāṇa cāpadhṛk | sthito'bhavam tatra sa yatra lakṣmaṇaḥ | atandribhir jñātibhir ātta kārmukair | mahendra kalpam paripālayan tadā || 87.24 ||

And I too, at that time, taking up my best bow and arrows, stationed myself there with my tireless kinsmen, bows in hand, at the very spot where Lakshmana stood guarding Rama, who rivalled Indra himself.
