Shloka 1 (ayodhya.89.1)

vyuṣya rātrim tu tatraiva gaṅgā kūle sa rāghavaḥ | bharataḥ kālyam utthāya śatrughnam idam abravīt || 89.1 ||

Having spent the night there on the bank of the Ganga, Bharata, the descendant of Raghu, rose at dawn and said this to Shatrughna:

Shloka 2 (ayodhya.89.2)

śatrughnottiṣṭha kim śeṣe niṣādādhipatim guham | śīghram ānaya bhadram te tārayiṣyati vāhinīm || 89.2 ||

'Rise, Shatrughna! Why sleep any longer? Quickly bring Guha, the lord of the Nishadas—good fortune to you—he will help ferry the army across.'

Shloka 3 (ayodhya.89.3)

jāgarmi na aham svapimi tathaiva āryam vicintayan | ity evam abravīd bhrātrā śatrughno'pi pracoditaḥ || 89.3 ||

Thus urged by his brother, Shatrughna too replied, 'I am awake, not asleep—I have only been thinking, all this while, of noble Rama.'

Shloka 4 (ayodhya.89.4)

iti saṃvadator evam anyonyam nara siṃhayoḥ | āgamya prāñjaliḥ kāle guho bharatam abravīt || 89.4 ||

While those two lions among men were thus talking with each other, Guha arrived at just that moment and, with joined palms, said to Bharata:

Shloka 5 (ayodhya.89.5)

kaccit sukham nadī tīre avātsīḥ kākutstha śarvarīm | kaccic ca saha sainyasya tava sarvam anāmayam || 89.5 ||

'I hope, O Kakutstha, you passed the night comfortably here on the riverbank, and that all is well with you and your army.'

Shloka 6 (ayodhya.89.6)

guhasya tat tu vacanam śrutvā snehād udīritam | rāmasya anuvaśo vākyam bharato'pi idam abravīt || 89.6 ||

Hearing those words of Guha, spoken out of affection, Bharata, ever devoted to Rama, replied in turn:

Shloka 7 (ayodhya.89.7)

sukhā naḥ śarvarī rājan pūjitāś ca api te vayam | gaṅgām tu naubhir bahvībhir dāśāḥ saṃtārayantu naḥ || 89.7 ||

'O king, we passed the night in comfort, and you have honoured us well besides. Now let your boatmen ferry us across the Ganga in your many boats.'

Shloka 8 (ayodhya.89.8)

tato guhaḥ saṃtvaritaḥ śrutvā bharata śāsanam | pratipraviśya nagaram tam jñāti janam abravīt || 89.8 ||

Hearing Bharata's command, Guha hurried back into the town and spoke to that gathering of his own kinsfolk:

Shloka 9 (ayodhya.89.9)

uttiṣṭhata prabudhyadhvam bhadram astu hi vaḥ sadā | nāvaḥ samanukarṣadhvam tārayiṣyāma vāhinīm || 89.9 ||

'Get up, awake! May good fortune ever attend you. Bring the boats down to the water—we must ferry this army across.'

Shloka 10 (ayodhya.89.10)

te tathā uktāḥ samutthāya tvaritāḥ rāja śāsanāt | paṃca nāvām śatāny eva samāninyuḥ samantataḥ || 89.10 ||

Thus told, they rose at once at their king's command and quickly brought together five hundred boats from every quarter.

Shloka 11 (ayodhya.89.11)

anyāḥ svastika vijñeyā mahāghaṇṭādharā varāḥ | śobhamānāḥ patākinyo yukta vātāḥ susaṃhatāḥ || 89.11 ||

Some of the finest, marked with the auspicious swastika sign, hung with great bells, adorned with flags, well rigged with fair sails and sturdily built,

Shloka 12 (ayodhya.89.12)

tataḥ svastika vijñeyām pāṇḍu kambala saṃvṛtām | sanandi ghoṣām kalyāṇīm guho nāvam upāharat || 89.12 ||

—and Guha himself then brought forward one especially fine boat, marked with the swastika, covered with a white blanket, and ringing with joyful sounds.

Shloka 13 (ayodhya.89.13)

tām āruroha bharataḥ śatrughnaḥ ca mahābalaḥ | kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāḥ ca anyā rāja yoṣitaḥ || 89.13 ||

Onto it climbed mighty Bharata and Shatrughna, along with Kausalya, Sumitra, and all the other royal women.

Shloka 14 (ayodhya.89.14)

purohitaḥ ca tatpūrvam gurave brāhmaṇāḥ ca ye | anantaram rāja dārāḥ tathaiva śakaṭa āpaṇāḥ || 89.14 ||

Even before them, the family priest and the elder brahmins present had already boarded; after them followed the other royal wives, and likewise the bullock-carts and the baggage.

Shloka 15 (ayodhya.89.15)

āvāsam ādīpayatām tīrtham ca apy avagāhatām | bhāṇḍāni ca ādadānānām ghoṣaḥ tridivam aspṛśat || 89.15 ||

The clamour of men setting fire to the camp, of others wading down the landing steps, and of still others gathering up their belongings, rose up to touch the very sky.

Shloka 16 (ayodhya.89.16)

patākinyaḥ tu tā nāvaḥ svayam dāśair adhiṣṭhitāḥ | vahantyo janam ārūḍham tadā saṃpetur āśugāḥ || 89.16 ||

Those flag-decked boats, steered by the boatmen themselves, sped swiftly onward, carrying their mounted passengers.

Shloka 17 (ayodhya.89.17)

nārīṇām abhipūrṇāḥ tu kāścit kāścit tu vājinām | kāścit tatra vahanti sma yāna yugyam mahādhanam || 89.17 ||

Some boats were filled with women, some laden with horses, and others still carried the costly draught-animals and baggage.

Shloka 18 (ayodhya.89.18)

tāḥ sma gatvā param tīram avaropya ca tam janam | nivṛttāḥ kāṇḍa citrāṇi kriyante dāśa bandhubhiḥ || 89.18 ||

Having reached the far shore and set down their passengers, the boats returned, and Guha's kinsmen plied them back and forth as easily as toy rafts of bamboo.

Shloka 19 (ayodhya.89.19)

savaijayantāḥ tu gajā gaja ārohaiḥ pracoditāḥ | tarantaḥ sma prakāśante sadhvajā iva parvatāḥ || 89.19 ||

The elephants, decked with banners and urged on by their riders, swam across looking like winged mountains bearing flags.

Shloka 20 (ayodhya.89.20)

nāvaḥ ca āruruhuḥ tu anye plavaiḥ teruḥ tathā apare | anye kumbha ghaṭaiḥ terur anye teruḥ ca bāhubhiḥ || 89.20 ||

Some climbed into boats, some crossed on rafts, others swam with the help of water-pots, and yet others crossed simply with their own arms.

Shloka 21 (ayodhya.89.21)

sā puṇyā dhvajinī gaṅgām dāśaiḥ saṃtāritā svayam | maitre muhūrte prayayau prayāga vanam uttamam || 89.21 ||

Thus that blessed army, ferried across the Ganga by the boatmen themselves, set out at the auspicious hour of Maitra toward the fair woods of Prayaga.

Shloka 22 (ayodhya.89.22)

āśvāsayitvā ca camūm mahātmā | niveśayitvā ca yathā upajoṣam | draṣṭum bharadvājam ṛṣi pravaryam | ṛtvig vṛtaḥ san bharataḥ pratasthe || 89.22 ||

The high-souled Bharata, having given the army rest and let it settle wherever it pleased, set out, accompanied by his priests, to see Bharadwaja, foremost among sages.

Shloka 23 (ayodhya.89.23)

sa brāhmaṇasya āśramam abhyupetya | mahātmano deva purohitasya | dadarśa ramya uṭaja vṛkṣa ṣaṇḍaṃ | mahad vanam vipravarasya ramyam || 89.23 ||

Approaching the hermitage of that great-souled brahmin, priest of the gods, he beheld the vast and lovely forest of that foremost sage, graced with charming huts and groves of trees.
