Vishvakarma's Hospitality
Shloka 1 (ayodhya.91.1)
कृत बुद्धिम् निवासाय तथैव स मुनिः तदा। भरतम् कैकयी पुत्रम् आतिथ्येन न्यमन्त्रयत्॥ 91.1 ॥
kṛta buddhim nivāsāya tathaiva sa muniḥ tadā| bharatam kaikayī putram ātithyena nyamantrayat
Knowing that Bharata, the son of Kaikeyi, had resolved to halt there for the night, the sage Bharadwaja then invited him to accept his hospitality.
Shloka 2 (ayodhya.91.2)
अब्रवीद् भरतः तु एनम् ननु इदम् भवता कृतम्। पाद्यम् अर्घ्यम् तथा आतिथ्यम् वने यद् उपपद्यते॥ 91.2 ॥
abravīd bharataḥ tu enam nanu idam bhavatā kṛtam| pādyam arghyam tathā ātithyam vane yad upapadyate
Bharata replied to him, "Have you not already shown me this hospitality — the water for my feet and hands, and whatever welcome a forest can offer?"
Shloka 3 (ayodhya.91.3)
अथ उवाच भरद्वाजो भरतम् प्रहसन्न् इव। जाने त्वाम् प्रीति सम्युक्तम् तुष्येः त्वम् येन केनचित्॥ 91.3 ॥
atha uvāca bharadvājo bharatam prahasann iva| jāne tvām prīti samyuktam tuṣyeḥ tvam yena kenacit
Then Bharadwaja said to Bharata, smiling a little, "I know you are affectionate by nature, and that you are content with whatever is offered to you."
Shloka 4 (ayodhya.91.4)
सेनायाः तु तव एतस्याः कर्तुम् इच्छामि भोजनम्। मम प्रीतिर् यथारूपा त्वम् अर्हो मनुज ऋषभ॥ 91.4 ॥
senāyāḥ tu tava etasyāḥ kartum icchāmi bhojanam| mama prītir yathārūpā tvam arho manuja ṛṣabha
"But I wish to provide a feast for this army of yours. O foremost of men, you ought to allow my affection its full satisfaction."
Shloka 5 (ayodhya.91.5)
किम् अर्थम् च अपि निक्षिप्य दूरे बलम् इह आगतः। कस्मान् न इह उपयातो असि सबलः पुरुष ऋषभ॥ 91.5 ॥
kim artham ca api nikṣipya dūre balam iha āgataḥ| kasmān na iha upayāto asi sabalaḥ puruṣa ṛṣabha
"Why did you come here leaving your army behind at a distance? O best of men, why did you not come here together with your forces?"
Shloka 6 (ayodhya.91.6)
भरतः प्रत्युवाच इदम् प्रान्जलिः तम् तपोधनम्। ससैन्यो न उपयातो अस्मि भगवन् भगवद्भयात्॥ 91.6 ॥
bharataḥ pratyuvāca idam prānjaliḥ tam tapodhanam| sasainyo na upayāto asmi bhagavan bhagavadbhayāt
Bharata, with joined palms, replied to that sage rich in austerity: "Holy one, I did not come with my army for fear of troubling you."
Shloka 7 (ayodhya.91.7)
राज्ञा च भगवन् नित्यम् राजपुत्रेण वा सदा। यत्नतः परिहर्तव्या विषयेषु तपस्विनः॥ 91.7 ॥
rājñā ca bhagavan nityam rājaputreṇa vā sadā| yatnataḥ parihartavyā viṣayeṣu tapasvinaḥ
"Holy one, a king or a prince should always take great care to spare ascetics any trouble within their domains."
Shloka 8 (ayodhya.91.8)
वाजिमुख्या मनुष्याः च मत्ताः च वरवारणाः। प्रच्छाद्य महतीम् भूमिम् भगवन्न् अनुयान्ति माम्॥ 91.8 ॥
vājimukhyā manuṣyāḥ ca mattāḥ ca varavāraṇāḥ| pracchādya mahatīm bhūmim bhagavann anuyānti mām
"Fine horses, men, and mighty rutting elephants, covering a vast stretch of ground, follow behind me, holy one."
Shloka 9 (ayodhya.91.9)
ते वृक्षान् उदकम् भूमिम् आश्रमेषु उटजान् तथा। न हिंस्युर् इति तेन अहम् एक एव आगतः ततः॥ 91.9 ॥
te vṛkṣān udakam bhūmim āśrameṣu uṭajān tathā| na hiṃsyur iti tena aham eka eva āgataḥ tataḥ
"Thinking that they might harm the trees, the water, the ground, and the huts of the hermitages, I therefore came here alone."
Shloka 10 (ayodhya.91.10)
आनीयताम् इतः सेना इत्य् आज्ञप्तः परमर्षिणा। ततस् तु चक्रे भरतः सेनायाः समुपागमम्॥ 91.10 ॥
ānīyatām itaḥ senā ity ājñaptaḥ paramarṣiṇā| tatas tu cakre bharataḥ senāyāḥ samupāgamam
Commanded by the great sage, "Let the army be brought here," Bharata accordingly arranged for its arrival.
Shloka 11 (ayodhya.91.11)
अग्निशालाम् प्रविश्य अथ पीत्वा अपः परिमृज्य च। आतिथ्यस्य क्रियाहेतोर् विश्वकर्माणम् आह्वयत्॥ 91.11 ॥
agniśālām praviśya atha pītvā apaḥ parimṛjya ca| ātithyasya kriyāhetor viśvakarmāṇam āhvayat
Then, entering the sanctuary of the sacred fire, sipping water and wiping his lips, Bharadwaja invoked Vishvakarma to perform the rite of hospitality.
Shloka 12 (ayodhya.91.12)
आह्वये विश्वकर्माणम् अहम् त्वष्टारम् एव च। आतिथ्यम् कर्तुम् इच्छामि तत्र मे संविधीयताम्॥ 91.12 ॥
āhvaye viśvakarmāṇam aham tvaṣṭāram eva ca| ātithyam kartum icchāmi tatra me saṃvidhīyatām
"I invoke Vishvakarma, and also Tvashta — I wish to offer hospitality; let arrangements for it be made for me."
Shloka 13 (ayodhya.91.13)
आह्वये लोकपालान् त्रीन् देवान् शक्रमुखान् तथा। आतिथ्यम् कर्तुम् इच्छामि तत्र मे संविधीयताम्॥ 91.13 ॥
āhvaye lokapālān trīn devān śakramukhān tathā| ātithyam kartum icchāmi tatra me saṃvidhīyatām
"I invoke the three guardians of the world and the gods headed by Indra — I wish to offer hospitality; let arrangements for it be made for me."
Shloka 14 (ayodhya.91.14)
प्राक्स्रोतसः च या नद्यः प्रत्यक्स्रोतस एव च। पृथिव्याम् अन्तरिक्षे च समायान्तु अद्य सर्वशः॥ 91.14 ॥
prāksrotasaḥ ca yā nadyaḥ pratyaksrotasa eva ca| pṛthivyām antarikṣe ca samāyāntu adya sarvaśaḥ
"Let all the rivers, those that flow eastward and those that flow westward, upon the earth and in the sky, come together here today from every quarter."
Shloka 15 (ayodhya.91.15)
अन्याः स्रवन्तु मैरेयम् सुराम् अन्याः सुनिष्ठिताम्। अपराः च उदकम् शीतम् इक्षुकाण्डरस उपमम्॥ 91.15 ॥
anyāḥ sravantu maireyam surām anyāḥ suniṣṭhitām| aparāḥ ca udakam śītam ikṣukāṇḍarasa upamam
"Let some flow with maireya wine, others with well-refined liquor, and yet others with cool water tasting like sugarcane juice."
Shloka 16 (ayodhya.91.16)
आह्वये देवगन्धर्वान् विश्वावसु हहाहुहून्। तथैव अप्सरसो देवीर् गन्धर्वीः च अपि सर्वशः॥ 91.16 ॥
āhvaye devagandharvān viśvāvasu hahāhuhūn| tathaiva apsaraso devīr gandharvīḥ ca api sarvaśaḥ
"I invoke the divine gandharvas — Vishvavasu, Haha and Huhu — and likewise the Apsaras and gandharva-women from every quarter."
Shloka 17 (ayodhya.91.17)
घृताचीम् अथ विश्वाचीम् मिश्रकेशीम् अलम्बुसाम्। नागदन्तां च हेमां च हिमाम् अद्रिकृतस्थलाम्॥ 91.17 ॥
ghṛtācīm atha viśvācīm miśrakeśīm alambusām| nāgadantāṃ ca hemāṃ ca himām adrikṛtasthalām
"I invoke Ghritachi, Vishvachi, Mishrakeshi, Alambusha, Nagadanta, Hema, and Hima who dwells amid the mountains."
Shloka 18 (ayodhya.91.18)
शक्रम् याः च उपतिष्ठन्ति ब्रह्माणम् याः च भामिनीः। सर्वाः तुम्बुरुणा सार्धम् आह्वये सपरिच्छदाः॥ 91.18 ॥
śakram yāḥ ca upatiṣṭhanti brahmāṇam yāḥ ca bhāminīḥ| sarvāḥ tumburuṇā sārdham āhvaye saparicchadāḥ
"I invoke, together with Tumburu, all those radiant women who attend upon Indra and upon Brahma, along with their retinues."
Shloka 19 (ayodhya.91.19)
वनम् कुरुषु यद् दिव्यम् वासो भूषणपत्रवत्। दिव्यनारीफलम् शश्वत् तत् कौबेरम् इह एव तु॥ 91.19 ॥
vanam kuruṣu yad divyam vāso bhūṣaṇapatravat| divyanārīphalam śaśvat tat kauberam iha eva tu
"That divine forest in the land of the Kurus, whose leaves are like garments and ornaments and whose eternal fruit is celestial women — that grove of Kubera — let it appear here."
Shloka 20 (ayodhya.91.20)
इह मे भगवान् सोमो विधत्ताम् अन्नम् उत्तमम्। भक्ष्यम् भोज्यम् च चोष्यम् च लेह्यम् च विविधम् बहु॥ 91.20 ॥
iha me bhagavān somo vidhattām annam uttamam| bhakṣyam bhojyam ca coṣyam ca lehyam ca vividham bahu
"Here let the blessed Soma provide the finest food for me — an abundant variety of things to bite, to eat, to suck, and to lick."
Shloka 21 (ayodhya.91.21)
विचित्राणि च माल्यानि पादपप्रच्युतानि च। सुरादीनि च पेयानि मांसानि विविधानि च॥ 91.21 ॥
vicitrāṇi ca mālyāni pādapapracyutāni ca| surādīni ca peyāni māṃsāni vividhāni ca
"And many-hued garlands dropped fresh from the trees, and drinks beginning with wine, and meats of every kind."
Shloka 22 (ayodhya.91.22)
एवम् समाधिना युक्तः तेजसा अप्रतिमेन च। शिक्षास्वरसमायुक्तम् तपसा च अब्रवीन् मुनिः॥ 91.22 ॥
evam samādhinā yuktaḥ tejasā apratimena ca| śikṣāsvarasamāyuktam tapasā ca abravīn muniḥ
Thus, the sage, endowed with deep concentration and matchless brilliance born of his austerity, spoke these words with the proper accent and intonation of the sacred verses.
Shloka 23 (ayodhya.91.23)
मनसा ध्यायतः तस्य प्राङ्मुखस्य कृतान्जलेः। आजग्मुः तानि सर्वाणि दैवतानि पृथक्पृथक्॥ 91.23 ॥
manasā dhyāyataḥ tasya prāṅmukhasya kṛtānjaleḥ| ājagmuḥ tāni sarvāṇi daivatāni pṛthakpṛthak
As he sat facing east with joined palms, meditating in his mind, all those deities arrived there, each in turn.
Shloka 24 (ayodhya.91.24)
मलयम् दर्दुरम् चैव ततः स्वेदनुदो अनिलः। उपस्पृश्य ववौ युक्त्या सुप्रियात्मा सुखः शिवः॥ 91.24 ॥
malayam darduram caiva tataḥ svedanudo anilaḥ| upaspṛśya vavau yuktyā supriyātmā sukhaḥ śivaḥ
Then a gentle, pleasant, wholesome breeze, sweat-dispelling, began to blow softly after touching the Malaya and Dardura mountains.
Shloka 25 (ayodhya.91.25)
ततो अभ्यवर्तन्त घना दिव्याः कुसुमवृष्टयः। देवदुन्दुभिघोषः च दिक्षु सर्वासु शुश्रुवे॥ 91.25 ॥
tato abhyavartanta ghanā divyāḥ kusumavṛṣṭayaḥ| devadundubhighoṣaḥ ca dikṣu sarvāsu śuśruve
Then dense showers of divine flowers began to fall, and the sound of celestial drums was heard in every direction.
Shloka 26 (ayodhya.91.26)
प्रववुः च उत्तमा वाता ननृतुः च अप्सरोगणाः। प्रजगुर् देवगन्धर्वा वीणाः प्रमुमुचुः स्वरान्॥ 91.26 ॥
pravavuḥ ca uttamā vātā nanṛtuḥ ca apsarogaṇāḥ| prajagur devagandharvā vīṇāḥ pramumucuḥ svarān
Fine breezes blew, troupes of Apsaras danced, the divine gandharvas sang, and vinas released their melodies.
Shloka 27 (ayodhya.91.27)
स शब्दो द्याम् च भूमिम् च प्राणिनाम् श्रवणानि च। विवेश उच्चारितः श्लक्ष्णः समो लयगुणान्वितः॥ 91.27 ॥
sa śabdo dyām ca bhūmim ca prāṇinām śravaṇāni ca| viveśa uccāritaḥ ślakṣṇaḥ samo layaguṇānvitaḥ
That sound, gentle, even and rich with rhythm, rising up, filled the sky, the earth, and the ears of every living being.
Shloka 28 (ayodhya.91.28)
तस्मिन्न् उपरते शब्दे दिव्ये श्रोत्रसुखे नृणाम्। ददर्श भारतम् सैन्यम् विधानम् विश्वकर्मणः॥ 91.28 ॥
tasminn uparate śabde divye śrotrasukhe nṛṇām| dadarśa bhāratam sainyam vidhānam viśvakarmaṇaḥ
When that divine sound, so pleasing to human ears, had ceased, Bharata's army beheld the handiwork that Vishvakarma had wrought.
Shloka 29 (ayodhya.91.29)
बभूव हि समा भूमिः समन्तात् पन्चयोजनम्। शाद्वलैर् बहुभिः चन्ना नीलवैदूर्यसंनिभैः॥ 91.29 ॥
babhūva hi samā bhūmiḥ samantāt pancayojanam| śādvalair bahubhiḥ cannā nīlavaidūryasaṃnibhaiḥ
The ground for five yojanas all around had become level, covered everywhere with lush grass the colour of blue beryl.
Shloka 30 (ayodhya.91.30)
तस्मिन् बिल्वाः कपित्थाः च पनसा बीजपूरकाः। आमलक्यो बभूवुः च चूताः च फलभूषणाः॥ 91.30 ॥
tasmin bilvāḥ kapitthāḥ ca panasā bījapūrakāḥ| āmalakyo babhūvuḥ ca cūtāḥ ca phalabhūṣaṇāḥ
There appeared bilva, kapittha, jackfruit, citron and amalaka trees, and mango trees adorned with fruit.
Shloka 31 (ayodhya.91.31)
उत्तरेभ्यः कुरुभ्यः च वनम् दिव्योपभोगवत्। आजगाम नदी दिव्या तीरजैर् बहुभिर् वृता॥ 91.31 ॥
uttarebhyaḥ kurubhyaḥ ca vanam divyopabhogavat| ājagāma nadī divyā tīrajair bahubhir vṛtā
From the land of the northern Kurus came that divine forest of delights, along with a heavenly river bordered by many trees on its banks.
Shloka 32 (ayodhya.91.32)
चतुःशालानि शुभ्राणि शालाः च गजवाजिनाम्। हर्म्यप्रासादसंघाताः तोरणानि शुभानि च॥ 91.32 ॥
catuḥśālāni śubhrāṇi śālāḥ ca gajavājinām| harmyaprāsādasaṃghātāḥ toraṇāni śubhāni ca
Bright quadrangled halls appeared, along with stables for elephants and horses, clusters of mansions and towers, and splendid archways.
Shloka 33 (ayodhya.91.33)
सित मेघनिभम् च अपि राजवेश्म सुतोरणम्। शुक्लमाल्यकृताकारम् दिव्यगन्धसमुक्षितम्॥ 91.33 ॥
sita meghanibham ca api rājaveśma sutoraṇam| śuklamālyakṛtākāram divyagandhasamukṣitam
And a royal palace too appeared, white as a cloud, with splendid archways, adorned all over with white garlands, and sprinkled with divine fragrance.
Shloka 34 (ayodhya.91.34)
चतुरस्रम् असंबाधम् शयनासनयानवत्। दिव्यैः सर्वरसैर् युक्तम् दिव्यभोजनवस्त्रवत्॥ 91.34 ॥
caturasram asaṃbādham śayanāsanayānavat| divyaiḥ sarvarasair yuktam divyabhojanavastravat
It was perfectly square, spacious, furnished with couches, seats and carriages, provided with every celestial flavour, and stocked with divine food and raiment.
Shloka 35 (ayodhya.91.35)
उपकल्पितसर्वान्नम् धौतनिर्मलभाजनम्। क्लृप्तसर्वासनम् श्रीमत् स्वास्तीर्णशयनोत्तमम्॥ 91.35 ॥
upakalpitasarvānnam dhautanirmalabhājanam| klṛptasarvāsanam śrīmat svāstīrṇaśayanottamam
Every kind of food was made ready in vessels washed spotlessly clean; every seat was duly arranged, and the finest couches were beautifully spread — the whole palace radiant with splendour.
Shloka 36 (ayodhya.91.36)
प्रविवेश महाबाहुर् अनुज्ञातो महर्षिणा। वेश्म तद् रत्नसंपूर्णम् भरतः कैकयीसुतः॥ 91.36 ॥
praviveśa mahābāhur anujñāto maharṣiṇā| veśma tad ratnasaṃpūrṇam bharataḥ kaikayīsutaḥ
With the great sage's leave, the mighty-armed Bharata, son of Kaikeyi, entered that palace filled with jewels.
Shloka 37 (ayodhya.91.37)
अनुजग्मुः च तम् सर्वे मन्त्रिणः सपुरोहिताः। बभूवुः च मुदा युक्ता तम् दृष्ट्वा वेश्मसंविधिम्॥ 91.37 ॥
anujagmuḥ ca tam sarve mantriṇaḥ sapurohitāḥ| babhūvuḥ ca mudā yuktā tam dṛṣṭvā veśmasaṃvidhim
All his ministers, together with the priests, followed him in; and seeing that magnificent arrangement of the palace, they were filled with delight.
Shloka 38 (ayodhya.91.38)
तत्र राजासनम् दिव्यम् व्यजनम् छत्रम् एव च। भरतो मन्त्रिभिः सार्धम् अभ्यवर्तत राजवत्॥ 91.38 ॥
tatra rājāsanam divyam vyajanam chatram eva ca| bharato mantribhiḥ sārdham abhyavartata rājavat
There Bharata, together with his ministers, walked round the divine royal throne, the fan and the umbrella, as though a king were present.
Shloka 39 (ayodhya.91.39)
आसनम् पूजयाम् आस रामाय अभिप्रणम्य च। वालव्यजनम् आदाय न्यषीदत् सचिवासने॥ 91.39 ॥
āsanam pūjayām āsa rāmāya abhipraṇamya ca| vālavyajanam ādāya nyaṣīdat sacivāsane
He honoured that seat by bowing to it, as though offering reverence to Rama himself; then, taking up the yak-tail fan, he sat down on the minister's seat.
Shloka 40 (ayodhya.91.40)
आनुपूर्व्यान् निषेदुः च सर्वे मन्त्रपुरोहिताः। ततः सेनापतिः पश्चात् प्रशास्ता च निषेदतुः॥ 91.40 ॥
ānupūrvyān niṣeduḥ ca sarve mantrapurohitāḥ| tataḥ senāpatiḥ paścāt praśāstā ca niṣedatuḥ
All the ministers and priests seated themselves in due order of rank; after them the army's commander, and last the administrator of the camp, took their seats.
Shloka 41 (ayodhya.91.41)
ततस् तत्र मुहूर्तेन नद्यः पायसकर्दमाः। उपातिष्ठन्त भरतम् भरद्वाजस्य शासनात्॥ 91.41 ॥
tatas tatra muhūrtena nadyaḥ pāyasakardamāḥ| upātiṣṭhanta bharatam bharadvājasya śāsanāt
Then, in a moment, by Bharadwaja's command, streams whose very mud was rice-milk began to flow up to Bharata.
Shloka 42 (ayodhya.91.42)
तासाम् उभयतः कूलम् पाण्डुमृत्तिकलेपनाः। रम्याः च आवसथा दिव्या ब्रह्मणः तु प्रसादजाः॥ 91.42 ॥
tāsām ubhayataḥ kūlam pāṇḍumṛttikalepanāḥ| ramyāḥ ca āvasathā divyā brahmaṇaḥ tu prasādajāḥ
On both banks of those rivers appeared charming, divine dwellings, plastered with pale white clay, born of Brahma's grace.
Shloka 43 (ayodhya.91.43)
तेन एव च मुहूर्तेन दिव्याभरणभूषिताः। आगुर् विंशतिसाहस्राः ब्राह्मणाः प्रहिताः स्त्रियः॥ 91.43 ॥
tena eva ca muhūrtena divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ| āgur viṃśatisāhasrāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ prahitāḥ striyaḥ
In that very moment, twenty thousand women adorned with divine ornaments, sent by Brahma, arrived there.
Shloka 44 (ayodhya.91.44)
सुवर्णमणिमुक्तेन प्रवालेन च शोभिताः। आगुर् विंशतिसाहस्राः कुबेरप्रहिताः स्त्रियः॥ 91.44 ॥
suvarṇamaṇimuktena pravālena ca śobhitāḥ| āgur viṃśatisāhasrāḥ kuberaprahitāḥ striyaḥ
Another twenty thousand women, sent by Kubera, arrived, resplendent with gold, gems, pearls and coral.
Shloka 45 (ayodhya.91.45)
याभिर् गृहीतः पुरुषः स उन्माद इव लक्ष्यते। आगुर् विंशतिसाहस्रा नन्दनाद् अप्सरोगणाः॥ 91.45 ॥
yābhir gṛhītaḥ puruṣaḥ sa unmāda iva lakṣyate| āgur viṃśatisāhasrā nandanād apsarogaṇāḥ
And twenty thousand troupes of Apsaras came from the Nandana garden — women whose embrace makes a man seem as though seized with madness.
Shloka 46 (ayodhya.91.46)
नारदः तुम्बुरुर् गोपः पर्वतः सूर्यवर्चसः। एते गन्धर्वराजानो भरतस्य अग्रतो जगुः॥ 91.46 ॥
nāradaḥ tumburur gopaḥ parvataḥ sūryavarcasaḥ| ete gandharvarājāno bharatasya agrato jaguḥ
Narada, Tumburu, Gopa and Parvata, radiant as the sun — these kings among gandharvas sang before Bharata.
Shloka 47 (ayodhya.91.47)
अलम्बुसा मिश्रकेशी पुण्डरीका अथ वामना। उपानृत्यन्त तु भरतम् भरद्वाजस्य शासनात्॥ 91.47 ॥
alambusā miśrakeśī puṇḍarīkā atha vāmanā| upānṛtyanta tu bharatam bharadvājasya śāsanāt
By Bharadwaja's command, Alambusha, Mishrakeshi, Pundarika and Vamana danced before Bharata.
Shloka 48 (ayodhya.91.48)
यानि माल्यानि देवेषु यानि चैत्ररथे वने। प्रयागे तान्य् अदृश्यन्त भरद्वाजस्य शासनात्॥ 91.48 ॥
yāni mālyāni deveṣu yāni caitrarathe vane| prayāge tāny adṛśyanta bharadvājasya śāsanāt
By Bharadwaja's command, garlands such as those worn by the gods and those found in the Chaitraratha forest appeared there at Prayaga.
Shloka 49 (ayodhya.91.49)
बिल्वाः मार्दन्गिकाः आसन् शम्याग्राहा बिभीतकाः। अश्वत्थाः नर्तकाः च आसन् भरद्वाजस्य तेजसा॥ 91.49 ॥
bilvāḥ mārdangikāḥ āsan śamyāgrāhā bibhītakāḥ| aśvatthāḥ nartakāḥ ca āsan bharadvājasya tejasā
By Bharadwaja's power, bilva trees became drummers, bibhitaka trees cymbal-players, and ashvattha trees became dancers.
Shloka 50 (ayodhya.91.50)
ततः सरलतालाः च तिलका नक्तमालकाः। प्रहृष्टाः तत्र संपेतुः कुब्जीभूताः अथ वामनाः॥ 91.50 ॥
tataḥ saralatālāḥ ca tilakā naktamālakāḥ| prahṛṣṭāḥ tatra saṃpetuḥ kubjībhūtāḥ atha vāmanāḥ
Then deodar, palmyra, tilaka and naktamala trees, joyfully transformed into hunchbacks and dwarfs, came running there.

शिंशपा आमलकी जम्बूर् याः च अन्याः कानने लताः। मालती मल्लिका जातिर् याः च अन्याः कानने लताः॥ 91.51 ॥

Shimshapa, amalaka and jambu trees, and other forest-creepers, as well as the malati, mallika and jati creepers —
Shloka 52 (ayodhya.91.52)
प्रमदाविग्रहम् कृत्वा भरद्वाजाश्रमे अवसन्। सुराम् सुरापाः पिबत पायसम् च बुभुक्षिताः॥ 91.52 ॥
pramadāvigraham kṛtvā bharadvājāśrame avasan| surām surāpāḥ pibata pāyasam ca bubhukṣitāḥ
— took on the forms of young women in Bharadwaja's hermitage, and called out: "O wine-lovers, drink your fill of wine! O hungry ones, eat the rice-milk!"
Shloka 53 (ayodhya.91.53)
मांसानि च सुमेध्यानि भक्ष्यध्वम् यावद् इच्छथ॥ 91.53 ॥
māṃsāni ca sumedhyāni bhakṣyadhvam yāvad icchatha
"And eat this wholesome meat, as much as you desire!"
Shloka 54 (ayodhya.91.54)
उत्साद्य स्नापयन्ति स्म नदीतीरेषु वल्गुषु। अप्य् एकैकम् पुरुषम् प्रमदाः सप्त च अष्ट च॥ 91.54 ॥
utsādya snāpayanti sma nadītīreṣu valguṣu| apy ekaikam puruṣam pramadāḥ sapta ca aṣṭa ca
On the lovely river-banks, groups of seven or eight young women massaged and bathed each man in turn.
Shloka 55 (ayodhya.91.55)
संवहन्त्यः समापेतुर् नार्यो रुचिरलोचनाः। परिमृज्य तथा न्यायम् पाययन्ति वराङ्गनाः॥ 91.55 ॥
saṃvahantyaḥ samāpetur nāryo ruciralocanāḥ| parimṛjya tathā nyāyam pāyayanti varāṅganāḥ
Lovely-eyed women came running to massage their limbs; and those beautiful women, after wiping them dry, gave them drinks in proper measure.
Shloka 56 (ayodhya.91.56)
हयान् गजान् खरान् उष्ट्रान् तथैव सुरभेः सुतान्। अभोजयन् वाहनपाः तेषाम् भोज्यम् यथाविधि॥ 91.56 ॥
hayān gajān kharān uṣṭrān tathaiva surabheḥ sutān| abhojayan vāhanapāḥ teṣām bhojyam yathāvidhi
The keepers fed the horses, elephants, donkeys, camels, and the offspring of the cow Surabhi with their proper fodder, in due manner.
Shloka 57 (ayodhya.91.57)
इक्षून् च मधुजालान् च भोजयन्ति स्म वाहनान्। इक्ष्वाकुवरयोधानाम् चोदयन्तो महाबलाः॥ 91.57 ॥
ikṣūn ca madhujālān ca bhojayanti sma vāhanān| ikṣvākuvarayodhānām codayanto mahābalāḥ
The powerful attendants of Ikshvaku's finest warriors fed the animals with sugarcane and honeyed grain, coaxing them affectionately to eat.
Shloka 58 (ayodhya.91.58)
न अश्वबन्धो अश्वम् आजानान् न गजम् कुन्जरग्रहः। मत्तप्रमत्तमुदिता चमूः सा तत्र सम्बभौ॥ 91.58 ॥
na aśvabandho aśvam ājānān na gajam kunjaragrahaḥ| mattapramattamuditā camūḥ sā tatra sambabhau
The groom could no longer recognise his own horse, nor the mahout his own elephant — the whole army shone there, intoxicated, carefree and joyful.
Shloka 59 (ayodhya.91.59)
तर्पिता सर्वकामैः ते रक्तचन्दनरूषिताः। अप्सरोगणसंयुक्ताः सैन्या वाचम् उदैरयन्॥ 91.59 ॥
tarpitā sarvakāmaiḥ te raktacandanarūṣitāḥ| apsarogaṇasaṃyuktāḥ sainyā vācam udairayan
Fully satisfied in every desire, anointed with red sandal paste, surrounded by troupes of Apsaras, the soldiers cried out these words:
Shloka 60 (ayodhya.91.60)
न एव अयोध्याम् गमिष्यामो न गमिष्याम दण्डकान्। कुशलम् भरतस्य अस्तु रामस्य अस्तु तथा सुखम्॥ 91.60 ॥
na eva ayodhyām gamiṣyāmo na gamiṣyāma daṇḍakān| kuśalam bharatasya astu rāmasya astu tathā sukham
"We shall go neither to Ayodhya nor to the Dandaka forest! May all be well with Bharata, and may Rama too be happy!"
Shloka 61 (ayodhya.91.61)
इति पादातयोधाः च हस्त्यश्वारोहबन्धकाः। अनाथाः तम् विधिम् लब्ध्वा वाचम् एताम् उदैरयन्॥ 91.61 ॥
iti pādātayodhāḥ ca hastyaśvārohabandhakāḥ| anāthāḥ tam vidhim labdhvā vācam etām udairayan
Thus spoke the foot-soldiers, and the riders and keepers of elephants and horses, masterless as they were, upon receiving such treatment.
Shloka 62 (ayodhya.91.62)
सम्प्रहृष्टा विनेदुः ते नराः तत्र सहस्रशः। भरतस्य अनुयातारः स्वर्गे अयम् इति च अब्रुवन्॥ 91.62 ॥
samprahṛṣṭā vineduḥ te narāḥ tatra sahasraśaḥ| bharatasya anuyātāraḥ svarge ayam iti ca abruvan
Thousands of men in Bharata's retinue, overjoyed, cried aloud there, exclaiming, "This is truly heaven!"
Shloka 63 (ayodhya.91.63)
नृत्यन्ति स्म हसन्ति स्म गायन्ति स्म च सैनिकाः। समन्तात् परिधावन्ति माल्योपेताः सहस्रशः॥ 91.63 ॥
nṛtyanti sma hasanti sma gāyanti sma ca sainikāḥ| samantāt paridhāvanti mālyopetāḥ sahasraśaḥ
The soldiers danced, laughed, and sang; thousands of them, garlanded, ran about in every direction.
Shloka 64 (ayodhya.91.64)
ततो भुक्तवताम् तेषाम् तद् अन्नम् अमृतोपमम्। दिव्यान् उद्वीक्ष्य भक्ष्यान् तान् अभवद् भक्षणे मतिः॥ 91.64 ॥
tato bhuktavatām teṣām tad annam amṛtopamam| divyān udvīkṣya bhakṣyān tān abhavad bhakṣaṇe matiḥ
Though they had already eaten that nectar-like food, seeing more of those divine delicacies, the desire to eat again arose in them.
Shloka 65 (ayodhya.91.65)
प्रेष्याः चेट्यः च वध्वः च बलस्थाः च अपि सर्वशः। बभूवुः ते भृशम् तृप्ताः सर्वे च आहतवाससः॥ 91.65 ॥
preṣyāḥ ceṭyaḥ ca vadhvaḥ ca balasthāḥ ca api sarvaśaḥ| babhūvuḥ te bhṛśam tṛptāḥ sarve ca āhatavāsasaḥ
Servants, maids, the soldiers' wives, and all the men of the army everywhere became thoroughly satisfied, and all were clad in fresh new garments.
Shloka 66 (ayodhya.91.66)
कुन्जराः च खरोष्ट्राः च गवाश्वाः च मृगपक्षिणः। बभूवुः सुभृताः तत्र न अन्यो ह्य् अन्यम् अकल्पयत्॥ 91.66 ॥
kunjarāḥ ca kharoṣṭrāḥ ca gavāśvāḥ ca mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ| babhūvuḥ subhṛtāḥ tatra na anyo hy anyam akalpayat
Elephants, donkeys, camels, cattle, horses, deer and birds were all well fed there, so that none troubled another.
Shloka 67 (ayodhya.91.67)
न अशुक्लवासाः तत्र आसीत् क्षुधितो मलिनो अपि वा। रजसा ध्वस्तकेशो वा नरः कश्चिद् अदृश्यत॥ 91.67 ॥
na aśuklavāsāḥ tatra āsīt kṣudhito malino api vā| rajasā dhvastakeśo vā naraḥ kaścid adṛśyata
No one there was seen wearing soiled clothes, or hungry, or unclean, or with hair disheveled by dust.
Shloka 68 (ayodhya.91.68)
आजैः च अपि च वाराहैर् निष्ठानवरसंचयैः। फलनिर्यूहसंसिद्धैः सूपैर् गन्धरसान्वितैः॥ 91.68 ॥
ājaiḥ ca api ca vārāhair niṣṭhānavarasaṃcayaiḥ| phalaniryūhasaṃsiddhaiḥ sūpair gandharasānvitaiḥ
There were dishes of goat and boar heaped with the finest cuts, and savoury broths, fragrant and rich, made from fruit juices.
Shloka 69 (ayodhya.91.69)
पुष्पध्वजवतीः पूर्णाः शुक्लस्य अन्नस्य च अभितः। ददृशुर् विस्मिताः तत्र नरा लौहीः सहस्रशः॥ 91.69 ॥
puṣpadhvajavatīḥ pūrṇāḥ śuklasya annasya ca abhitaḥ| dadṛśur vismitāḥ tatra narā lauhīḥ sahasraśaḥ
The soldiers, filled with wonder, saw all around them iron vessels, flag-bedecked and brimming with white rice, offered there in thousands.
Shloka 70 (ayodhya.91.70)
बभूवुर् वनपार्श्वेषु कूपाः पायसकर्दमाः। ताः च कामदुघा गावो द्रुमाः च आसन् मधुश्च्युतः॥ 91.70 ॥
babhūvur vanapārśveṣu kūpāḥ pāyasakardamāḥ| tāḥ ca kāmadughā gāvo drumāḥ ca āsan madhuścyutaḥ
By the sides of the forest, wells appeared whose very mud was rice-milk; the cows there became cows of plenty, and the trees dripped with honey.
Shloka 71 (ayodhya.91.71)
वाप्यो मैरेयपूर्णाः च मृष्टमांसचयैर् वृताः। प्रतप्तपिठरैः च अपि मार्गमायूरकौक्कुटैः॥ 91.71 ॥
vāpyo maireyapūrṇāḥ ca mṛṣṭamāṃsacayair vṛtāḥ| prataptapiṭharaiḥ ca api mārgamāyūrakaukkuṭaiḥ
There were tanks brimming with maireya wine, and others heaped with delicious cuts of meat, cooked hot in pans, of deer and peacock and wild fowl.
Shloka 72 (ayodhya.91.72)
पात्रीणाम् च सहस्राणि शातकुम्भमयानि च। स्थाल्यः कुम्भ्यः करम्भ्यः च दधिपूर्णाः सुसंस्कृताः॥ 91.72 ॥
pātrīṇām ca sahasrāṇi śātakumbhamayāni ca| sthālyaḥ kumbhyaḥ karambhyaḥ ca dadhipūrṇāḥ susaṃskṛtāḥ
There were thousands of golden vessels, and well-cleaned bowls, small jars and wide-mouthed dishes, all brimming with curd.
Shloka 73 (ayodhya.91.73)
यौवनस्थस्य गौरस्य कपित्थस्य सुगन्धिनः। ह्रदाः पूर्णा रसालस्य दध्नः श्वेतस्य च अपरे। बभूवुः पायसस्य अन्ये शर्करायाः च संचयाः॥ 91.73 ॥
yauvanasthasya gaurasya kapitthasya sugandhinaḥ| hradāḥ pūrṇā rasālasya dadhnaḥ śvetasya ca apare| babhūvuḥ pāyasasya anye śarkarāyāḥ ca saṃcayāḥ
There were pools brimming with the fragrant, golden juice of ripe wood-apple, others full of white curd, and yet others heaped with rice-pudding and with sugar.
Shloka 74 (ayodhya.91.74)
कल्कान् चूर्णकषायान् च स्नानानि विविधानि च। ददृशुर् भाजनस्थानि तीर्थेषु सरिताम् नराः॥ 91.74 ॥
kalkān cūrṇakaṣāyān ca snānāni vividhāni ca| dadṛśur bhājanasthāni tīrtheṣu saritām narāḥ
The men saw, kept ready in vessels at the river-fords, cosmetic pastes, powders, decoctions, and manifold preparations for bathing.
Shloka 75 (ayodhya.91.75)
शुक्लान् अंशुमतः च अपि दन्तधावनसंचयान्। शुक्लान् चन्दनकल्कान् च समुद्गेषु अवतिष्ठतः॥ 91.75 ॥
śuklān aṃśumataḥ ca api dantadhāvanasaṃcayān| śuklān candanakalkān ca samudgeṣu avatiṣṭhataḥ
They saw heaps of gleaming white tooth-twigs, and caskets filled with white sandal-paste.
Shloka 76 (ayodhya.91.76)
दर्पणान् परिमृष्टान् च वाससाम् च अपि संचयान्। पादुकोपानहान् चैव युग्मान् यत्र सहस्रशः॥ 91.76 ॥
darpaṇān parimṛṣṭān ca vāsasām ca api saṃcayān| pādukopānahān caiva yugmān yatra sahasraśaḥ
— polished mirrors, and heaps of garments, and there, thousands of pairs of sandals and shoes.
Shloka 77 (ayodhya.91.77)
आन्जनीः कन्कतान् कूर्चान् शस्त्राणि च धनूंषि च। मर्मत्राणानि चित्राणि शयनान्य् आसनानि च॥ 91.77 ॥
ānjanīḥ kankatān kūrcān śastrāṇi ca dhanūṃṣi ca| marmatrāṇāni citrāṇi śayanāny āsanāni ca
Collyrium-caskets, combs, brushes, weapons and bows, wondrous armour for vital parts, and couches and seats —
Shloka 78 (ayodhya.91.78)
प्रतिपानह्रदान् पूर्णान् खरोष्ट्रगजवाजिनाम्। अवगाह्य सुतीर्थान् च ह्रदान् सोत्पलपुष्करान्॥ 91.78 ॥
pratipānahradān pūrṇān kharoṣṭragajavājinām| avagāhya sutīrthān ca hradān sotpalapuṣkarān
— brimming drinking-ponds for donkeys, camels, elephants and horses, and bathing-pools with fine landing-steps, full of lotuses and lilies.
Shloka 79 (ayodhya.91.79)
आकाशवर्णप्रतिमान् स्वच्छतोयान् सुखप्लवान्। नीलवैदूर्यवर्णान् च मृदून् यवससंचयान्॥ 91.79 ॥
ākāśavarṇapratimān svacchatoyān sukhaplavān| nīlavaidūryavarṇān ca mṛdūn yavasasaṃcayān
— pools the colour of the sky, with clear water offering a pleasant bathe, and heaps of soft grass the colour of blue beryl —
Shloka 80 (ayodhya.91.80)
निर्वापार्थम् पशूनाम् ते ददृशुः तत्र सर्वशः॥ 91.80 ॥
nirvāpārtham paśūnām te dadṛśuḥ tatra sarvaśaḥ
— all these, meant for feeding the animals, they saw there on every side.
Shloka 81 (ayodhya.91.81)
व्यस्मयन्त मनुष्याः ते स्वप्नकल्पम् तद् अद्भुतम्। दृष्ट्वा अतिथ्यम् कृतम् तादृक् भरतस्य महर्षिणा॥ 91.81 ॥
vyasmayanta manuṣyāḥ te svapnakalpam tad adbhutam| dṛṣṭvā atithyam kṛtam tādṛk bharatasya maharṣiṇā
Seeing such a wondrous, dream-like hospitality shown to Bharata by the great sage, those men were struck with amazement.
Shloka 82 (ayodhya.91.82)
इत्य् एवम् रममाणानाम् देवानाम् इव नन्दने। भरद्वाजाश्रमे रम्ये सा रात्रिर् व्यत्यवर्तत॥ 91.82 ॥
ity evam ramamāṇānām devānām iva nandane| bharadvājāśrame ramye sā rātrir vyatyavartata
Thus, as they revelled like gods in the garden of Nandana, that night passed away in Bharadwaja's lovely hermitage.
Shloka 83 (ayodhya.91.83)
प्रतिजग्मुः च ता नद्यो गन्धर्वाः च यथा आगतम्। भरद्वाजम् अनुज्ञाप्य ताः च सर्वा वराङ्गनाः॥ 91.83 ॥
pratijagmuḥ ca tā nadyo gandharvāḥ ca yathā āgatam| bharadvājam anujñāpya tāḥ ca sarvā varāṅganāḥ
Then, taking leave of Bharadwaja, those rivers, the gandharvas, and all those lovely women returned the way they had come.
Shloka 84 (ayodhya.91.84)
तथैव मत्ता मदिरोत्कटा नराः। तथैव दिव्यागुरुचन्दनोक्षिताः। तथैव दिव्या विविधाः स्रगुत्तमाः। पृथक् प्रकीर्णा मनुजैः प्रमर्दिताः॥ 91.84 ॥
tathaiva mattā madirotkaṭā narāḥ| tathaiva divyāgurucandanokṣitāḥ| tathaiva divyā vividhāḥ sraguttamāḥ| pṛthak prakīrṇā manujaiḥ pramarditāḥ
The men still lay there, overcome and intoxicated with wine; still drenched in divine aloe and sandal paste; and the many kinds of exquisite divine garlands lay likewise scattered here and there, crushed by the people.
