The Gift of the Celestial Weapons

Shloka 1 (bala.27.1)

अथ तां रजनीमुष्य विश्वामित्रो महायशाः । प्रहस्य राघवं वाक्यमुवाच मधुराक्षरम् ॥ २७-१ ॥

atha tāṃ rajanīmuṣya viśvāmitro mahāyaśāḥ | prahasya rāghavaṃ vākyamuvāca madhurākṣaram || 27.1 ||

Then, when that night had passed, the illustrious Vishvamitra, smiling, spoke sweet words to Raghava.

Shloka 2 (bala.27.2)

परितुष्टोऽस्मि भद्रं ते राजपुत्र महायशः । प्रीत्या परमया युक्तो ददाम्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः ॥ २७-२ ॥

parituṣṭo'smi bhadraṃ te rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ | prītyā paramayā yukto dadāmyastrāṇi sarvaśaḥ || 27.2 ||

I am well pleased, blessings upon you, O illustrious prince; filled with the deepest affection, I shall now give you all my weapons, every one of them.

Shloka 3 (bala.27.3)

देवासुरगणान् वापि सगन्धर्वोरगान्भुवि । यैरमित्रान् प्रसह्याजौ वशीकृत्य जयिष्यसि ॥ २७-३ ॥

devāsuragaṇān vāpi sagandharvoragānbhuvi | yairamitrān prasahyājau vaśīkṛtya jayiṣyasi || 27.3 ||

With these you shall be able to overpower and conquer in battle even hosts of gods and demons, gandharvas and serpents on this earth — or any enemy at all.

Shloka 4 (bala.27.4)

तानि दिव्यानि भद्रं ते ददाम्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः । दण्डचक्रं महद्दिव्यं तव दास्यामि राघव ॥ २७-४ ॥

tāni divyāni bhadraṃ te dadāmyastrāṇi sarvaśaḥ | daṇḍacakraṃ mahaddivyaṃ tava dāsyāmi rāghava || 27.4 ||

Blessings upon you — I give you all these divine weapons, every one. I shall give you, O Raghava, the great and divine discus of Danda.

Shloka 5 (bala.27.5)

धर्मचक्रं ततो वीर कालचक्रं तथैव च । विष्णुचक्रं तथात्युग्रमैन्द्रं चक्रं तथैव च ॥ २७-५ ॥

dharmacakraṃ tato vīra kālacakraṃ tathaiva ca | viṣṇucakraṃ tathātyugramaindraṃ cakraṃ tathaiva ca || 27.5 ||

Then, O hero, the discus of Dharma, and likewise the discus of Kala; also the terrible discus of Vishnu, and likewise the discus of Indra.

Shloka 6 (bala.27.6)

वज्रमस्त्रं नरश्रेष्ठ शैवं शूलवरं तथा । अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरश्चैव ऐषीकमपि राघव ॥ २७-६ ॥

vajramastraṃ naraśreṣṭha śaivaṃ śūlavaraṃ tathā | astraṃ brahmaśiraścaiva aiṣīkamapi rāghava || 27.6 ||

The thunderbolt weapon, O best of men, and likewise Shiva's supreme trident; the weapon named Brahmashiras, and also, O Raghava, the reed-shaft weapon called Aishika.

Shloka 7 (bala.27.7)

ददामि ते महाबाहो ब्राह्ममस्त्रमनुत्तमम् । गदे द्वे चैव काकुत्स्थ मोदकी शिखरी शुभे ॥ २७-७ ॥

dadāmi te mahābāho brāhmamastramanuttamam | gade dve caiva kākutstha modakī śikharī śubhe || 27.7 ||

I give you, O mighty-armed one, the peerless Brahma weapon; and also, O Kakutstha, two auspicious maces, named Modaki and Shikhari.

Shloka 8 (bala.27.8)

प्रदीप्ते नरशार्दूल प्रयच्छामि नृपात्मज । धर्मपाशमहं राम कालपाशं तथैव च ॥ २७-८ ॥

pradīpte naraśārdūla prayacchāmi nṛpātmaja | dharmapāśamahaṃ rāma kālapāśaṃ tathaiva ca || 27.8 ||

Both blazing bright, O tiger among men, I bestow on you, O prince; and, O Rama, the noose of Dharma, and likewise the noose of Kala.

Shloka 9 (bala.27.9)

वारुणं पाशमस्त्रं च ददाम्यहमनुत्तमम् । अशनी द्वे प्रयच्छामि शुष्कार्द्रे रघुनन्दन ॥ २७-९ ॥

vāruṇaṃ pāśamastraṃ ca dadāmyahamanuttamam | aśanī dve prayacchāmi śuṣkārdre raghunandana || 27.9 ||

And I give you the peerless noose-weapon of Varuna; and, O joy of the Raghus, I bestow the two thunderbolts named Shushka and Ardra, the Dry and the Moist.

Shloka 10 (bala.27.10)

ददामि चास्त्रं पैनाकमस्त्रं नारायणं तथा । आग्नेयमस्त्रं दयितं शिखरं नाम नामतः ॥ २७-१० ॥

dadāmi cāstraṃ painākamastraṃ nārāyaṇaṃ tathā | āgneyamastraṃ dayitaṃ śikharaṃ nāma nāmataḥ || 27.10 ||

And I give you the Pinaka weapon, and likewise the weapon of Narayana; and the beloved weapon of Agni, called by the name Shikhara.

Shloka 11 (bala.27.11)

वायव्यं प्रथमं नाम ददामि तव चानघ । अस्त्रं हयशिरो नाम क्रौञ्चमस्त्रं तथैव च ॥ २७-११ ॥

vāyavyaṃ prathamaṃ nāma dadāmi tava cānagha | astraṃ hayaśiro nāma krauñcamastraṃ tathaiva ca || 27.11 ||

I give you the weapon of Vayu called Prathama, O sinless one; the weapon named Hayashiras, and likewise the Krauncha weapon.

Shloka 12 (bala.27.12)

शक्तिद्वयं च काकुत्स्थ ददामि तव राघव । कंकालं मुसलं घोरं कापालमथ किङ्किणीम् ॥ २७-१२ ॥

śaktidvayaṃ ca kākutstha dadāmi tava rāghava | kaṃkālaṃ musalaṃ ghoraṃ kāpālamatha kiṅkiṇīm || 27.12 ||

And two spears, O Kakutstha, I give you, O Raghava; the terrible Kankala, the club named Musala, the Kapala, and the Kinkini.

Shloka 13 (bala.27.13)

वधार्थं रक्षसां यानि ददाम्येतानि सर्वशः । वैद्याधरं महास्त्रं च नन्दनं नाम नामतः ॥ २७-१३ ॥

vadhārthaṃ rakṣasāṃ yāni dadāmyetāni sarvaśaḥ | vaidyādharaṃ mahāstraṃ ca nandanaṃ nāma nāmataḥ || 27.13 ||

All these weapons, meant for the destruction of the rakshasas, I give you entirely; and the great weapon of the Vidyadharas, named Nandana.

Shloka 14 (bala.27.14)

असिरत्नं महाबाहो ददामि नृवरात्मज । गान्धर्वमस्त्रं दयितं मोहनं नाम नामतः ॥ २७-१४ ॥

asiratnaṃ mahābāho dadāmi nṛvarātmaja | gāndharvamastraṃ dayitaṃ mohanaṃ nāma nāmataḥ || 27.14 ||

The jewel among swords, O mighty-armed prince, I give you; and the cherished Gandharva weapon called by the name Mohana.

Shloka 15 (bala.27.15)

प्रस्वापनं प्रशमनं दद्मि सौम्यं च राघव । वर्षणं शोषणं चैव संतापनविलापने ॥ २७-१५ ॥

prasvāpanaṃ praśamanaṃ dadmi saumyaṃ ca rāghava | varṣaṇaṃ śoṣaṇaṃ caiva saṃtāpanavilāpane || 27.15 ||

I give you the sleep-inducing Prasvapana and the gentle Prashamana, O Raghava; also the Varshana, the Shoshana, and the Santapana and Vilapana.

Shloka 16 (bala.27.16)

मादनं चैव दुर्धर्षं कन्दर्पदयितं तथा । गान्धर्वमस्त्रं दयितं मानवं नाम नामतः ॥ २७-१६ ॥

mādanaṃ caiva durdharṣaṃ kandarpadayitaṃ tathā | gāndharvamastraṃ dayitaṃ mānavaṃ nāma nāmataḥ || 27.16 ||

And the irresistible Madana, and likewise the weapon dear to Kandarpa; the cherished Gandharva weapon called by the name Manava.

Shloka 17 (bala.27.17)

पैशाचमस्त्रं दयितं मोहनं नाम नामतः । प्रतीच्छ नरशार्दूल राजपुत्र महायशः ॥ २७-१७ ॥

paiśācamastraṃ dayitaṃ mohanaṃ nāma nāmataḥ | pratīccha naraśārdūla rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ || 27.17 ||

The Paishacha weapon called Mohana; receive all these, O tiger among men, O illustrious prince.

Shloka 18 (bala.27.18)

तामसं नरशार्दूल सौमनं च महाबलम् । संवर्तं चैव दुर्धर्षं मौसलं च नृपात्मज ॥ २७-१८ ॥

tāmasaṃ naraśārdūla saumanaṃ ca mahābalam | saṃvartaṃ caiva durdharṣaṃ mausalaṃ ca nṛpātmaja || 27.18 ||

The Tamasa, O tiger among men, and the mighty Saumana; and the irresistible Samvarta, and the Mausala, O prince.

Shloka 19 (bala.27.19)

सत्यमस्त्रं महाबाहो तथा मायामयं परम् । सौरं तेजःप्रभं नाम परतेजोऽपकर्षणम् ॥ २७-१९ ॥

satyamastraṃ mahābāho tathā māyāmayaṃ param | sauraṃ tejaḥprabhaṃ nāma paratejo'pakarṣaṇam || 27.19 ||

The Satya weapon, O mighty-armed one, and likewise the supreme weapon of illusion, Mayamaya; the solar weapon called Tejahprabha, which draws away the brilliance of foes.

Shloka 20 (bala.27.20)

सोमास्त्रं शिशिरं नाम त्वाष्ट्रमस्त्रं सुदारुणम् । दारुणं च भगस्यापि शीतेषुमथ मानवम् ॥ २७-२० ॥

somāstraṃ śiśiraṃ nāma tvāṣṭramastraṃ sudāruṇam | dāruṇaṃ ca bhagasyāpi śīteṣumatha mānavam || 27.20 ||

The lunar weapon called Shishira; the dreadful weapon of Tvashtar; the fearsome Shiteshu belonging to Bhaga; and also the Manava weapon.

Shloka 21 (bala.27.21)

एतान् राम महाबाहो कामरूपान् महाबलान् । गृहाण परमोदारान् क्षिप्रमेव नृपात्मज ॥ २७-२१ ॥

etān rāma mahābāho kāmarūpān mahābalān | gṛhāṇa paramodārān kṣiprameva nṛpātmaja || 27.21 ||

Take these, O mighty-armed Rama — weapons of great power that can change form at will; accept these most excellent gifts at once, O prince.

Shloka 22 (bala.27.22)

स्थितस्तु प्राङ्मुखो भूत्वा शुचिर्मुनिवरस्तदा । ददौ रामाय सुप्रीतो मंत्रग्राममनुत्तमम् ॥ २७-२२ ॥

sthitastu prāṅmukho bhūtvā śucirmunivarastadā | dadau rāmāya suprīto maṃtragrāmamanuttamam || 27.22 ||

Then, standing facing the east and having purified himself, that noble sage, greatly pleased, bestowed on Rama the peerless assemblage of invoking mantras.

Shloka 23 (bala.27.23)

सर्वसंग्रहणं येषां दैवतैरपि दुर्लभम् । तान्यस्त्राणि तदा विप्रो राघवाय न्यवेदयत् ॥ २७-२३ ॥

sarvasaṃgrahaṇaṃ yeṣāṃ daivatairapi durlabham | tānyastrāṇi tadā vipro rāghavāya nyavedayat || 27.23 ||

Those weapons, whose entire mastery is hard to attain even for the gods, that Brahman sage then made known and entrusted to Raghava.

Shloka 24 (bala.27.24)

जपतस्तु मुनेस्तस्य विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः । उपतस्थुर्महार्हाणि सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि राघवम् ॥ २७-२४ ॥

japatastu munestasya viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ | upatasthurmahārhāṇi sarvāṇyastrāṇi rāghavam || 27.24 ||

As that wise sage Vishvamitra recited the mantras, all those most venerable weapons drew near and presented themselves before Raghava.

Shloka 25 (bala.27.25)

ऊचुश्च मुदिता रामं सर्वे प्रांजलयस्तदा । इमे च परमोदाराः किंकरास्तव राघव ॥ २७-२५ ॥

ūcuśca muditā rāmaṃ sarve prāṃjalayastadā | ime ca paramodārāḥ kiṃkarāstava rāghava || 27.25 ||

And then, all of them, joyful and with hands folded, said to Rama: 'Here we are, O Raghava, your most obedient servants —

Shloka 26 (bala.27.26)

यद्यदिच्छसि भद्रं ते तत्सर्वं करवाम वै । ततो रामः प्रसन्नात्मा तैरित्युक्तो महाबलैः ॥ २७-२६ ॥

yadyadicchasi bhadraṃ te tatsarvaṃ karavāma vai | tato rāmaḥ prasannātmā tairityukto mahābalaiḥ || 27.26 ||

— whatever you may wish, blessings upon you, that we shall surely do.' Then Rama, his heart glad, being thus addressed by those mighty weapon-spirits —

Shloka 27 (bala.27.27)

प्रतिगृह्य च काकुत्स्थः समालभ्य च पाणिना । मनसा मे भविष्यध्वमिति तानभ्यचोदयत् ॥ २७-२७ ॥

pratigṛhya ca kākutsthaḥ samālabhya ca pāṇinā | manasā me bhaviṣyadhvamiti tānabhyacodayat || 27.27 ||

— accepted them, and touching them with his hand, bade them: 'Present yourselves to me whenever I think of you.'

Shloka 28 (bala.27.28)

ततः प्रीतमना रामो विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् । अभिवाद्य महातेजा गमनायोपचक्रमे ॥ २७-२८ ॥

tataḥ prītamanā rāmo viśvāmitraṃ mahāmunim | abhivādya mahātejā gamanāyopacakrame || 27.28 ||

Then Rama, his mind gladdened, radiant with splendour, saluted the great sage Vishvamitra and made ready to continue on his way.
