The Bow of Mithila
Shloka 1 (bala.31.1)
अथ ताम् रजनीम् तत्र कृतार्थौ राम लक्षणौ । ऊषतुर् मुदितौ वीरौ प्रहृष्टेन अंतरात्मना ।। ३१.१ ।।
atha tām rajanīm tatra kṛtārthau rāma lakṣaṇau | ūṣatur muditau vīrau prahṛṣṭena aṃtarātmanā || 31.1 ||
Then, having achieved their purpose, the joyful heroes Rama and Lakshmana passed that night there, their hearts filled with delight.
Shloka 2 (bala.31.2)
प्रभातायाम् तु शर्वर्याम् कृत पौर्व अह्णिक क्रियौ । विश्वामित्रम् ऋषीम् च अन्यान् सहितौ अभिजग्मतुः ।। ३१.२ ।।
prabhātāyām tu śarvaryām kṛta paurva ahṇika kriyau | viśvāmitram ṛṣīm ca anyān sahitau abhijagmatuḥ || 31.2 ||
When that night turned to dawn, having performed their morning rites together, the two of them approached sage Vishwamitra and the other sages.
Shloka 3 (bala.31.3)
अभिवाद्य मुनि श्रेष्ठम् ज्वलंतम् इव पावकम् । ऊचतुर् परमोदारम् वाक्यम् मधुर भाषिणौ ।। ३१.३ ।।
abhivādya muni śreṣṭham jvalaṃtam iva pāvakam | ūcatur paramodāram vākyam madhura bhāṣiṇau || 31.3 ||
Bowing to the eminent sage, who blazed like sacrificial fire, the two sweet-spoken brothers addressed him with the most gracious words.
Shloka 4 (bala.31.4)
इमौ स्म मुनि शार्दूल किंकरौ समुपस्थितौ । आज्ञापय मुनिश्रेष्ठ शासनम् करवाव किम् ।। ३१.४ ।।
imau sma muni śārdūla kiṃkarau samupasthitau | ājñāpaya muniśreṣṭha śāsanam karavāva kim || 31.4 ||
"O tiger among sages, here we stand present as your servants; command us, O foremost of sages, what task shall we perform?"
Shloka 5 (bala.31.5)
एवम् उक्ते तयोः वाक्यम् सर्व एव महर्षयः । विश्वामित्रम् पुरस्कृत्य रामम् वचनम् अब्रुवन् ।। ३१.५ ।।
evam ukte tayoḥ vākyam sarva eva maharṣayaḥ | viśvāmitram puraskṛtya rāmam vacanam abruvan || 31.5 ||
When they had spoken thus, all the great sages, placing Vishwamitra at their head, spoke these words to Rama.
Shloka 6 (bala.31.6)
मैथिलस्य नरश्रेष्ठ जनकस्य भविष्यति । यज्नः परम धर्मिष्ठः तत्र यास्यामहे वयम् ।। ३१.६ ।।
maithilasya naraśreṣṭha janakasya bhaviṣyati | yajnaḥ parama dharmiṣṭhaḥ tatra yāsyāmahe vayam || 31.6 ||
"O best of men, a supremely righteous sacrifice is about to be held by Janaka, king of Mithila; we are going there."
Shloka 7 (bala.31.7)
त्वम् चैव नरशार्दूल सह अस्माभिर् गमिष्यसि । अद्भुतम् च धनू रत्नम् तत्र त्वम् द्रष्टुम् अर्हसि ।। ३१.७ ।।
tvam caiva naraśārdūla saha asmābhir gamiṣyasi | adbhutam ca dhanū ratnam tatra tvam draṣṭum arhasi || 31.7 ||
"You too, O tiger among men, should come along with us; there you deserve to see a wondrous jewel of a bow."
Shloka 8 (bala.31.8)
तद्धि पूर्वम् नरश्रेष्ठ दत्तम् सदसि दैवतैः । अप्रमेय बलम् घोरम् मखे परम भास्वरम् ।। ३१.८ ।।
taddhi pūrvam naraśreṣṭha dattam sadasi daivataiḥ | aprameya balam ghoram makhe parama bhāsvaram || 31.8 ||
"That immeasurably mighty and terrible bow, supremely radiant in battle, was long ago given by the gods in an assembly."
Shloka 9 (bala.31.9)
न अस्य देवा न गंधर्वा न असुरा न च राक्षसाः । कर्तुम् आरोपणम् शक्ता न कथंचन मानुषाः ।। ३१.९ ।।
na asya devā na gaṃdharvā na asurā na ca rākṣasāḥ | kartum āropaṇam śaktā na kathaṃcana mānuṣāḥ || 31.9 ||
"Neither gods, nor gandharvas, nor asuras, nor demons are able to string it -- and mortals, in no way at all."
Shloka 10 (bala.31.10)
धनुषस्य तस्य वीर्यम् हि जिज्ञासन्तो महीक्षितः । न शेकुर् आरोपयितुम् राजपुत्रा महाबलाः ।। ३१.१० ।।
dhanuṣasya tasya vīryam hi jijñāsanto mahīkṣitaḥ | na śekur āropayitum rājaputrā mahābalāḥ || 31.10 ||
"Wishing to test the might of that bow, many mighty princes and kings have tried, but none has been able to string it."
Shloka 11 (bala.31.11)
तद् धनुर् नरशार्दूल मैथिलस्य महात्मनः । तत्र द्रक्ष्यसि काकुत्स्थ यज्ञम् च परम अद्भुतम् ।। ३१.११ ।।
tad dhanur naraśārdūla maithilasya mahātmanaḥ | tatra drakṣyasi kākutstha yajñam ca parama adbhutam || 31.11 ||
"That bow of the great-souled king of Mithila, O tiger among men, you shall see there, O Kakutstha, along with a supremely wondrous sacrifice."
Shloka 12 (bala.31.12)
तद्धि यज्ञ फलम् तेन मैथिलेन उत्तमम् धनुः । याचितम् नर शार्दूल सुनाभम् सर्व दैवतैः ।। ३१.१२ ।।
taddhi yajña phalam tena maithilena uttamam dhanuḥ | yācitam nara śārdūla sunābham sarva daivataiḥ || 31.12 ||
"That excellent bow with its fine grip, O tiger among men, was begged by the king of Mithila from all the gods as the fruit of that sacrifice."
Shloka 13 (bala.31.13)
आयागभूतम् नृपतेः तस्य वेश्मनि राघव । अर्चितम् विविधैः गन्धैः धूपैः च अगुरु गंध्भिः ।। ३१.१३ ।।
āyāgabhūtam nṛpateḥ tasya veśmani rāghava | arcitam vividhaiḥ gandhaiḥ dhūpaiḥ ca aguru gaṃdhbhiḥ || 31.13 ||
"It is kept as an object of worship in that king's palace, O Raghava, honoured with various fragrances, incenses, and the scent of agaru."
Shloka 14 (bala.31.14)
एवम् उक्त्वा मुनिवरः प्रस्थानम् अकरोत् तदा । स ऋषि संघः स काकुत्स्थ आमंत्र्य वन देवताः ।। ३१.१४ ।।
evam uktvā munivaraḥ prasthānam akarot tadā | sa ṛṣi saṃghaḥ sa kākutstha āmaṃtrya vana devatāḥ || 31.14 ||
Having said this, the excellent sage then set out on his journey, together with the assembly of sages and with Kakutstha, after taking leave of the deities of the forest.
Shloka 15 (bala.31.15)
स्वस्ति वो अस्तु गमिष्यामि सिद्धः सिद्ध आश्रमात् अहम् । उत्तरे जाह्नवी तीरे हिमवंतम् शिलोच्चयम् ।। ३१.१५ ।।
svasti vo astu gamiṣyāmi siddhaḥ siddha āśramāt aham | uttare jāhnavī tīre himavaṃtam śiloccayam || 31.15 ||
"May all be well with you; having accomplished my purpose, I now go from this Siddhashrama toward the mountain heights of the Himalayas on the northern bank of the Ganga."
Shloka 16 (bala.31.16)
इति उक्त्वा मुनिशार्दूलः कौशिकः स तपोधनः । उत्तराम् दिशम् उद्दिश्य प्रस्थातुम् उपचक्रमे ।। ३१.१६ ।।
iti uktvā muniśārdūlaḥ kauśikaḥ sa tapodhanaḥ | uttarām diśam uddiśya prasthātum upacakrame || 31.16 ||
Having said this, that tiger among sages, Kaushika, whose wealth was his austerity, set forth, heading toward the northern direction.
Shloka 17 (bala.31.17)
तम् व्रजंतम् मुनिवरम् अन्वगात् अनुसारिणाम् । शकटी शत मात्रम् तु प्रयाणे ब्रह्म वादिनाम् ।। ३१.१७ ।।
tam vrajaṃtam munivaram anvagāt anusāriṇām | śakaṭī śata mātram tu prayāṇe brahma vādinām || 31.17 ||
As that excellent sage journeyed on, about a hundred carts of his Vedic-chanting followers moved along behind him.
Shloka 18 (bala.31.18)
मृग पक्षि गणाः चैव सिद्ध आश्रम निवासिनः । अनुजग्मुर् महात्मानम् विश्वामित्रम् तपोधनम् ।। ३१.१८ ।।
mṛga pakṣi gaṇāḥ caiva siddha āśrama nivāsinaḥ | anujagmur mahātmānam viśvāmitram tapodhanam || 31.18 ||
The herds of deer and flocks of birds dwelling in Siddhashrama also followed after the great-souled Vishwamitra, whose wealth was austerity.
Shloka 19 (bala.31.19)
निवर्तयामास ततः स ऋसि सन्घः स पक्षिणः । ते गत्वा दूरम् अध्वानम् लम्बमाने दिवाकरे ।। ३१.१९ ।।
nivartayāmāsa tataḥ sa ṛsi sanghaḥ sa pakṣiṇaḥ | te gatvā dūram adhvānam lambamāne divākare || 31.19 ||
But he then made that company of sages, along with those birds and animals, turn back; and having journeyed a long way on the road, as the sun began to hang low in the sky...
Shloka 20 (bala.31.20)
वासम् चक्रुर् मुनि गणाः शोणा कूले समाहिताः । ते अस्तम् गते दिनकरे स्नात्वा हुत हुताशनाः ।। ३१.२० ।।
vāsam cakrur muni gaṇāḥ śoṇā kūle samāhitāḥ | te astam gate dinakare snātvā huta hutāśanāḥ || 31.20 ||
...that assembly of sages made camp together, gathered on the bank of the river Sona. When the sun had set, they bathed and offered oblations into the sacred fire.
Shloka 21 (bala.31.21)
विश्वामित्रम् पुरस्कृत्य निषेदुर् अमित ओजसः । रामो अपि सह सौमित्रिः मुनीम् तान् अभिपूज्य च ।। ३१.२१ ।।
viśvāmitram puraskṛtya niṣedur amita ojasaḥ | rāmo api saha saumitriḥ munīm tān abhipūjya ca || 31.21 ||
Those sages of boundless energy then sat down with Vishwamitra placed at their head; Rama too, together with Lakshmana, having honoured those sages...
Shloka 22 (bala.31.22)
अग्रतो निषसाद अथ विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः । अथ रामो महातेजा विश्वामित्रम् तपोधनम् ।। ३१.२२ ।।
agrato niṣasāda atha viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ | atha rāmo mahātejā viśvāmitram tapodhanam || 31.22 ||
...sat down in front of the wise Vishwamitra. Then the greatly resplendent Rama questioned Vishwamitra, whose wealth was austerity...
Shloka 23 (bala.31.23)
पप्रच्छ मुनिशार्दूलम् कौतूहल समन्वितः । भगवन् कः नु अयम् देशः समृद्ध वन शोभितः ।। ३१.२३ ।।
papraccha muniśārdūlam kautūhala samanvitaḥ | bhagavan kaḥ nu ayam deśaḥ samṛddha vana śobhitaḥ || 31.23 ||
...that tiger among sages, filled with curiosity: "O revered one, what indeed is this land, so adorned with flourishing forests?"
Shloka 24 (bala.31.24)
श्रोतुम् इच्छामि भद्रम् ते वक्तुम् अर्हसि तत्त्वतः । चोदितो राम वाक्येन कथयामास सुव्रतः । तस्य देशस्य निखिलम् ऋषि मध्ये महातपाः ।। ३१.२४ ।।
śrotum icchāmi bhadram te vaktum arhasi tattvataḥ | codito rāma vākyena kathayāmāsa suvrataḥ | tasya deśasya nikhilam ṛṣi madhye mahātapāḥ || 31.24 ||
"I wish to hear of it; may you be blessed, and may it please you to relate it to me truly." Thus urged by Rama's words, that sage of firm vows and great austerity began, in the midst of the sages, to relate the whole account of that land.
