Rama Subdues Parashurama

Shloka 1 (bala.76.1)

श्रुत्वा तज्जामदग्न्यस्य वाक्यं दाशरथिस्तदा। गौरवाद्यंत्रितकथः पितू राममथाब्रवीत् ॥ १-७६-१ ॥

śrutvā tajjāmadagnyasya vākyaṃ dāśarathistadā| gauravādyaṃtritakathaḥ pitū rāmamathābravīt || 1-76-1 ||

Having heard those words of the son of Jamadagni, the son of Dasharatha, restrained in speech out of regard for his father, then spoke to Rama Bhargava.

Shloka 2 (bala.76.2)

कृतवानस्मि यत् कर्म श्रुतवानसि भार्गव। अनुरुन्ध्यामहे ब्रह्मन् पितुरानृण्यमास्थितः ॥ १-७६-२ ॥

kṛtavānasmi yat karma śrutavānasi bhārgava| anurundhyāmahe brahman piturānṛṇyamāsthitaḥ || 1-76-2 ||

"O Bhargava, the deed you have done I have heard of; O Brahmin, we honour you for thus discharging your debt to your father."

Shloka 3 (bala.76.3)

वीर्यहीनमिवाशक्तं क्षत्रधर्मेण भार्गव। अवजानासि मे तेजः पश्य मेऽद्य पराक्रमम् ॥ १-७६-३ ॥

vīryahīnamivāśaktaṃ kṣatradharmeṇa bhārgava| avajānāsi me tejaḥ paśya me'dya parākramam || 1-76-3 ||

"But, O Bhargava, you belittle my strength as though I were powerless and incapable in the Dharma of the Kshatriya — behold my valour today."

Shloka 4 (bala.76.4)

इत्युक्त्वा राघवः क्रुद्धो भार्गवस्य वरायुधम्। शरं च प्रतिजग्राह हस्ताल्लघुपराक्रमः ॥ १-७६-४ ॥

ityuktvā rāghavaḥ kruddho bhārgavasya varāyudham| śaraṃ ca pratijagrāha hastāllaghuparākramaḥ || 1-76-4 ||

Having said this, the enraged Raghava, swift in his might, took from Bhargava's hand that excellent weapon together with its arrow.

Shloka 5 (bala.76.5)

आरोप्य स धनू रामः शरं सज्यं चकार ह। जामदग्न्यं ततो रामं रामः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥ १-७६-५ ॥

āropya sa dhanū rāmaḥ śaraṃ sajyaṃ cakāra ha| jāmadagnyaṃ tato rāmaṃ rāmaḥ kruddho'bravīdidam || 1-76-5 ||

Rama strung that bow and fitted the arrow to the string. Then Rama, enraged, spoke thus to Rama, son of Jamadagni.

Shloka 6 (bala.76.6)

ब्राह्मणोऽसीति पूज्यो मे विश्वामित्रकृतेन च। तस्माच्छक्तो न ते राम मोक्तुं प्राणहरं शरम् ॥ १-७६-६ ॥

brāhmaṇo'sīti pūjyo me viśvāmitrakṛtena ca| tasmācchakto na te rāma moktuṃ prāṇaharaṃ śaram || 1-76-6 ||

"Because you are a Brahmin, and because of Vishvamitra, you are worthy of my reverence; therefore, O Rama, I am not able to release upon you this life-taking arrow."

Shloka 7 (bala.76.7)

इमां वा त्वद्गतिं राम तपोबलसमार्जितान्। लोकानप्रतिमान्वापि हनिष्यामि यदिच्छसि ॥ १-७६-७ ॥

imāṃ vā tvadgatiṃ rāma tapobalasamārjitān| lokānapratimānvāpi haniṣyāmi yadicchasi || 1-76-7 ||

"But O Rama, either this power of motion of yours, or those matchless worlds you have earned by the strength of austerity — whichever you wish, I shall destroy."

Shloka 8 (bala.76.8)

न ह्ययं वैष्णवो दिव्यः शरः परपुरंजयः। मोघः पतति वीर्येण बलदर्पविनाशनः ॥ १-७६-८ ॥

na hyayaṃ vaiṣṇavo divyaḥ śaraḥ parapuraṃjayaḥ| moghaḥ patati vīryeṇa baladarpavināśanaḥ || 1-76-8 ||

"For this divine arrow of Vishnu, conqueror of enemy citadels and destroyer of the pride of strength, never falls in vain through its own might."

Shloka 9 (bala.76.9)

वरायुधधरं रामं द्रष्टुं सर्षिगणाः सुराः। पितामहं पुरस्कृत्य समेतास्तत्र सर्वशः ॥ १-७६-९ ॥

varāyudhadharaṃ rāmaṃ draṣṭuṃ sarṣigaṇāḥ surāḥ| pitāmahaṃ puraskṛtya sametāstatra sarvaśaḥ || 1-76-9 ||

To see Rama bearing that excellent weapon, the gods, together with the hosts of sages, placing the Grandsire before them, gathered there from every side.

Shloka 10 (bala.76.10)

गंधर्वाप्सरसश्चैव सिद्धचारणकिन्नराः। यक्षराक्षसनागाश्च तद्द्रष्टुं महदद्भुतम् ॥ १-७६-१० ॥

gaṃdharvāpsarasaścaiva siddhacāraṇakinnarāḥ| yakṣarākṣasanāgāśca taddraṣṭuṃ mahadadbhutam || 1-76-10 ||

And Gandharvas and Apsaras, Siddhas, Charanas, and Kinnaras, and Yakshas, Rakshasas, and Nagas, all gathered to witness that great wonder.

Shloka 11 (bala.76.11)

जडीकृते तदा लोके रामे वरधनुर्धरे। निर्वीर्यो जामदग्न्योऽसौ रमो राममुदैक्षत ॥ १-७६-११ ॥

jaḍīkṛte tadā loke rāme varadhanurdhare| nirvīryo jāmadagnyo'sau ramo rāmamudaikṣata || 1-76-11 ||

With the whole world thus rendered motionless, and Rama bearing that excellent bow, the son of Jamadagni, his strength drained away, could only gaze up at Rama.

Shloka 12 (bala.76.12)

तेजोभिर्हतवीर्यत्वाज्जामदग्न्यो जडीकृतः। रामं कमलपत्राक्षं मन्दं मन्दमुवाच ह ॥ १-७६-१२ ॥

tejobhirhatavīryatvājjāmadagnyo jaḍīkṛtaḥ| rāmaṃ kamalapatrākṣaṃ mandaṃ mandamuvāca ha || 1-76-12 ||

His strength destroyed by Rama's splendour, the son of Jamadagni, rendered helpless, spoke very softly to lotus-petal-eyed Rama.

Shloka 13 (bala.76.13)

काश्यपाय मया दत्ता यदा पूर्वं वसुंधरा। विषये मे न वस्तव्यमिति मां काश्यपोऽब्रवीत् ॥ १-७६-१३ ॥

kāśyapāya mayā dattā yadā pūrvaṃ vasuṃdharā| viṣaye me na vastavyamiti māṃ kāśyapo'bravīt || 1-76-13 ||

"When formerly I gave the earth to Kashyapa, Kashyapa said to me, 'You must not dwell within my domain.'"

Shloka 14 (bala.76.14)

सोऽहं गुरुवचः कुर्वन् पृथिव्यां न वसे निशाम्। तदा प्रभृति काकुत्स्थ कृता मे काश्यपस्य ह ॥ १-७६-१४ ॥

so'haṃ guruvacaḥ kurvan pṛthivyāṃ na vase niśām| tadā prabhṛti kākutstha kṛtā me kāśyapasya ha || 1-76-14 ||

"I, obeying my guru's word, do not spend the night upon the earth; from that time onward, O Kakutstha, I have kept that promise to Kashyapa."

Shloka 15 (bala.76.15)

तमिमां मद्गतिं वीर हन्तुं नार्हसि राघव। मनोजवं गमिष्यामि महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम् ॥ १-७६-१५ ॥

tamimāṃ madgatiṃ vīra hantuṃ nārhasi rāghava| manojavaṃ gamiṣyāmi mahendraṃ parvatottamam || 1-76-15 ||

"O hero, O Raghava, it is not fitting for you to destroy this power of motion of mine; with it I shall go, swift as thought, to Mount Mahendra, foremost of mountains."

Shloka 16 (bala.76.16)

लोकास्त्वप्रतिमा राम निर्जितास्तपसा मया। जहि तान् शरमुख्येन मा भूत् कालस्य पर्ययः ॥ १-७६-१६ ॥

lokāstvapratimā rāma nirjitāstapasā mayā| jahi tān śaramukhyena mā bhūt kālasya paryayaḥ || 1-76-16 ||

"But the matchless worlds, O Rama, which I have won by austerity — destroy those with your excellent arrow; let not the moment pass."

Shloka 17 (bala.76.17)

अक्षय्यं मधुहन्तारं जानामि त्वां सुरेश्वरम्। धनुषोऽस्य परामर्शात् स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु परंतप ॥ १-७६-१७ ॥

akṣayyaṃ madhuhantāraṃ jānāmi tvāṃ sureśvaram| dhanuṣo'sya parāmarśāt svasti te'stu paraṃtapa || 1-76-17 ||

"By your handling of this bow, I know you to be the imperishable slayer of Madhu, lord of the gods; may you be blessed, O scorcher of foes."

Shloka 18 (bala.76.18)

एते सुरगणाः सर्वे निरीक्षन्ते समागताः। त्वामप्रतिमकर्माणमप्रतिद्वन्द्वमाहवे ॥ १-७६-१८ ॥

ete suragaṇāḥ sarve nirīkṣante samāgatāḥ| tvāmapratimakarmāṇamapratidvandvamāhave || 1-76-18 ||

"All these hosts of gods, gathered here, look upon you — you whose deeds are matchless, and who have no rival in battle."

Shloka 19 (bala.76.19)

न चेयं तव काकुत्स्थ व्रीडा भवितुमर्हति। त्वया त्रैलोक्यनाथेन यदहं विमुखीकृतः ॥ १-७६-१९ ॥

na ceyaṃ tava kākutstha vrīḍā bhavitumarhati| tvayā trailokyanāthena yadahaṃ vimukhīkṛtaḥ || 1-76-19 ||

"Nor, O Kakutstha, should this be any shame to you — that I have been turned back by you, lord of the three worlds."

Shloka 20 (bala.76.20)

शरमप्रतिमं राम मोक्तुमर्हसि सुव्रत। शरमोक्षे गमिष्यामि महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम् ॥ १-७६-२० ॥

śaramapratimaṃ rāma moktumarhasi suvrata| śaramokṣe gamiṣyāmi mahendraṃ parvatottamam || 1-76-20 ||

"O Rama of good vows, you should release this matchless arrow; once the arrow is loosed, I shall depart to Mount Mahendra, foremost of mountains."

Shloka 21 (bala.76.21)

तथा ब्रुवति रामे तु जामदग्न्ये प्रतापवान्। रामो दाशरथिः श्रीमान् चिक्षेप शरमुत्तमम् ॥ १-७६-२१ ॥

tathā bruvati rāme tu jāmadagnye pratāpavān| rāmo dāśarathiḥ śrīmān cikṣepa śaramuttamam || 1-76-21 ||

While Rama, son of Jamadagni, was speaking thus, the mighty and glorious Rama, son of Dasharatha, released that excellent arrow.

Shloka 22 (bala.76.22)

स हतान् दृश्य रामेण स्वान् लोकांस्तपसार्जितान्। जामदग्न्यो जगामाशु महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम् ॥ १-७६-२२ ॥

sa hatān dṛśya rāmeṇa svān lokāṃstapasārjitān| jāmadagnyo jagāmāśu mahendraṃ parvatottamam || 1-76-22 ||

Seeing his own worlds, earned by austerity, destroyed by Rama, the son of Jamadagni quickly departed to Mount Mahendra, foremost of mountains.

Shloka 23 (bala.76.23)

ततो वितिमिराः सर्वा दिशा चोपदिशस्तथा। सुराः सर्षिगणाः रामं प्रशशंसुरुदायुधम् ॥ १-७६-२३ ॥

tato vitimirāḥ sarvā diśā copadiśastathā| surāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ rāmaṃ praśaśaṃsurudāyudham || 1-76-23 ||

Then all the directions and intermediate quarters became free of darkness; the gods, together with the hosts of sages, praised Rama, his weapon still raised.

Shloka 24 (bala.76.24)

रामं दाशरथिं रामो जामदग्न्यः प्रशस्य च। ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य जगामात्मगतिं प्रभुः ॥ १-७६-२४ ॥

rāmaṃ dāśarathiṃ rāmo jāmadagnyaḥ praśasya ca| tataḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya jagāmātmagatiṃ prabhuḥ || 1-76-24 ||

And Rama, son of Jamadagni, having praised Rama, son of Dasharatha, and circumambulated him, that mighty one went his own way.
