Shloka 1 (kishkindha.63.1)

etairanyaiśca bahubhirvākyairvākyaviśāradaḥ | māṃ praśasyābhyanujñāpya praviṣṭaḥ sa svamālayam || 63.1 ||

The one skilled in speech, with these and many other words, having encouraged and permitted me to leave, entered his own abode.

Shloka 2 (kishkindha.63.2)

kandarāt tu visarpitvā parvatasya śanaiḥ śanaiḥ | ahaṃ vindhyaṃ samāruhya bhavataḥ pratipālaye || 63.2 ||

Then, creeping slowly, slowly out of the mountain's cave, I climbed the Vindhya and awaited your coming.

Shloka 3 (kishkindha.63.3)

adya tvetasya kālasya varṣaṃ sāgraśataṃ gatam | deśakālapratīkṣo'smi hṛdi kṛtvā munervacaḥ || 63.3 ||

Now, of this time, a little more than a hundred years have passed; keeping the sage's word in my heart, I have been awaiting the right place and time.

Shloka 4 (kishkindha.63.4)

mahāprasthānamāsādya svargate tu niśākare | māṃ nirdahati saṃtāpo vitarkairbahubhirvṛtam || 63.4 ||

But when Nishakara attained the great journey and went to heaven, anguish, wrapped in many doubts, consumed me.

Shloka 5 (kishkindha.63.5)

uditāṃ maraṇe buddhiṃ munivākyairnivartaye | buddhiryā tena me dattā prāṇānāṃ rakṣaṇe mama || 63.5 ||

I turned back, by the sage's words, the thought of dying that had arisen in me; that resolve which was given to me by him for the safeguarding of my life —

Shloka 6 (kishkindha.63.6)

sā me'panayate duḥkhaṃ dīptevāgniśikhā tamaḥ | budhyatā ca mayā vīryaṃ rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ || 63.6 ||

— that removes my sorrow, as a blazing tongue of flame drives away darkness. Yet, aware of the might of the wicked Ravana,

Shloka 7 (kishkindha.63.7)

putraḥ saṃtarjito vāgbhirna trātā maithilī katham | tasyā vilapitaṃ śrutvā tau ca sītāviyojitau || 63.7 ||

I rebuked my son Jatayu with harsh words, saying, 'how could you not save Maithili!' Hearing of her lament, and that those two, Rama and Lakshmana, were parted from Sita —

Shloka 8 (kishkindha.63.8)

na me daśarathasnehāt putreṇotpāditaṃ priyam | tasya tvevaṃ bruvāṇasya saṃhatairvānaraiḥ saha || 63.8 ||

— even out of affection for Dasharatha, my son did not accomplish that wish dear to me. While he, Sampati, was speaking thus, surrounded by the assembled monkeys,

Shloka 9 (kishkindha.63.9)

utpetatustadā pakṣau samakṣaṃ vanacāriṇām | sa dṛṣṭvā svāṃ tanuṃ pakṣairuda‍gatairaruṇacchadaiḥ || 63.9 ||

— then, before the eyes of the forest-dwelling monkeys, his two wings suddenly sprang up. He, seeing his own body covered with newly sprung, red-feathered wings —

Shloka 10 (kishkindha.63.10)

praharṣamatulaṃ lebhe vānarāṃścedamabravīt | niśākarasya rājarṣeḥ prasādādamitaujasaḥ || 63.10 ||

— obtained an incomparable joy, and said this to the monkeys: 'By the grace of the royal sage Nishakara, of boundless splendor —

Shloka 11 (kishkindha.63.11)

ādityaraśminirdagdhau pakṣau punarupasthitau | yauvane vartamānasya mamāsīd yaḥ parākramaḥ || 63.11 ||

— my two wings, burnt by the rays of the sun, have appeared once again. That valor which was mine, present in my youth —

Shloka 12 (kishkindha.63.12)

tamevādyāvagacchāmi balaṃ pauruṣameva ca | sarvathā kriyatāṃ yatnaḥ sītāmadhigamiṣyatha || 63.12 ||

— that alone I now experience again, along with my strength and manliness. Let every effort now be made by all of you; you shall surely attain Sita.

Shloka 13 (kishkindha.63.13)

pakṣalābho mamāyaṃ vaḥ siddhipratyayakārakaḥ | ityuktvā tān harīn sarvān sampātiḥ patagottamaḥ || 63.13 ||

'This regaining of my wings shall be, for all of you, the very cause of confidence in success.' Having said this to all those monkeys, Sampati, best of birds,

Shloka 14 (kishkindha.63.14)

utpapāta gireḥ śṛṅgājjijñāsuḥ khagamo gatim | tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā pratisaṃhṛṣṭamānasāḥ | babhūvurhariśārdūlā vikramābhyudayonmukhāḥ || 63.14 ||

sprang up from the mountain's peak, eager to test a sky-goer's motion once more. Hearing his words, those tiger-like monkeys, their hearts overjoyed, grew eager for the rising of their valor.

Shloka 15 (kishkindha.63.15)

atha pavanasamānavikramāḥ plavagavarāḥ pratilabdhapauruṣāḥ | abhijidabhimukhāṃ diśaṃ yayurjanakasutāparimārgaṇonmukhāḥ || 63.15 ||

Then those best of leapers, mighty as the wind, their manhood restored, set out toward the direction facing the auspicious moment Abhijit, eager to search for Janaka's daughter.
