"It is indeed not possible for you, O monkey, to enter this Lanka -- guarded by Ravana's forces and secured on every side."
Shloka 25 (sundara.3.25)

Then the valiant Hanuman spoke to her, standing before him: "I shall tell you truthfully what you ask of me."
Shloka 26 (sundara.3.26)

kā tvam virūpanayanā puradvāre'vatiṣṭhasi | kimartham cāpi mām ruddhvā nirbhartsayasi dāruṇā || 3.26 ||
"Who are you, of hideous eye, standing at the gate of this city? And for what reason, O fearsome one, do you bar my way and revile me so?"
Shloka 27 (sundara.3.27)

Hearing Hanuman's words, that Lanka, who could take on any form at will, grew angry and spoke harsh words to the son of the wind:
Shloka 28 (sundara.3.28)
aham rākṣasarājasya rāvaṇasya mahātmanaḥ | ājñāpratīkṣā durdharṣā rakṣāmi nagarīmimām || 3.28 ||
"I, invincible, guard this city, awaiting the command of the great-souled Ravana, king of the rakshasas."
Shloka 29 (sundara.3.29)
na śakyā māmavajñāya praveṣṭum nagarī tvayā | adya prāṇaiḥ parityaktaḥ svapsyase nihato mayā || 3.29 ||
"Having scorned me, it is not possible for you to enter this city. This very day, struck down by me, you will sleep, bereft of life."
Shloka 30 (sundara.3.30)
aham hi nagarī laṅkā svayameva plavaṅgama | sarvataḥ parirakṣāmi hyetatte kathitam mayā || 3.30 ||
"I myself am the city of Lanka, O monkey! I guard her on every side -- this I have now told you."
Shloka 31 (sundara.3.31)
laṅkāyā vacanam śrutvā hanumān mārutātmajaḥ | yatnavānsa hariśreṣṭhaḥ sthitaśśaila ivāparaḥ || 3.31 ||
Hearing Lanka's words, Hanuman, son of the wind, that foremost of monkeys, stood resolute, purposeful, like a second mountain.
Shloka 32 (sundara.3.32)
sa tām strīrūpavikṛtām dṛṣṭvā vānarapuṅgavaḥ | ābabhāṣe'tha medhāvi sattvān plavagarṣabhaḥ || 3.32 ||
Seeing her transformed into that grotesque, woman-like form, that wise and mighty bull among monkeys then spoke:
Shloka 33 (sundara.3.33)
drakṣyāmi nagarīm laṅkām sāṭṭaprākāratoraṇām | ityarthamiha samprāptaḥ param kautūhalam hi me || 3.33 ||
"I wish to see the city of Lanka, with her palaces, ramparts and archways. It is for this reason that I have come here -- I am filled with great curiosity."
Shloka 34 (sundara.3.34)
vanānyupavanānīha laṅkāyāḥ kānanāni ca | sarvato gṛhamukhyāni draṣṭumāgamanam hi me || 3.34 ||
"My coming here is only to see Lanka's woods, groves and forests, and all her great houses everywhere."
Shloka 35 (sundara.3.35)
tasya tadvacanam śrutvā laṅkā sā kāmarūpiṇī | bhūya eva punarvākyam babhāṣe paruṣākṣaram || 3.35 ||
Hearing his words, that Lanka, who could take any form at will, spoke yet again, in words harsher than before:
Shloka 36 (sundara.3.36)
"Without first defeating me, O evil-minded one, O basest of monkeys, it is not possible for you today to see this city, ruled by the lord of the rakshasas."
Shloka 37 (sundara.3.37)
tataḥ sa kapiśārdūlastāmuvāca niśācarīm | dṛṣvā purīmimām bhadre punaryāsye yathāgatam || 3.37 ||
Then that tiger among monkeys said to that night-wanderer: "O gracious one, having seen this city, I shall go back the way I came."
Shloka 38 (sundara.3.38)
tataḥ kṛtvā mahānādam sā vai laṅkā bhayāvaham | talena vānaraśreṣṭham tāḍayāmāsa vegitā || 3.38 ||
Then that Lanka, letting out a terrifying roar, struck that foremost of monkeys swiftly with the palm of her hand.
Shloka 39 (sundara.3.39)
tataḥ sa kapiśārdulo laṅkāyā tāḍito bhṛśam | nanāda sumahānādam vīryavān pavanātmajaḥ || 3.39 ||
Then that tiger among monkeys, the mighty son of the wind, struck hard by Lanka, let out a mighty roar of his own.
Shloka 40 (sundara.3.40)
tataḥ samvartayāmāsa vāmahastasya so'ṅguḷīḥ | muṣṭinābhijaghūnainām hanumān krodhamūrcitaḥ || strī ceti manyamānena nātikrodhaḥ svayam kṛtaḥ || 3.40 ||
Then Hanuman, dizzy with fury, curled the fingers of his left hand and struck her with his fist -- yet, thinking "she is a woman," he did not let his anger grow greater than this.
Shloka 41 (sundara.3.41)
sā tu tena prahāreṇa vihvalāṅgī nīśācarī || papāta sahasā bhūmau vikṛtānanadarśanā || 3.41 ||
Struck by that blow, that night-wanderer, her limbs reeling, fell suddenly to the ground, her face contorted in agony.
Shloka 42 (sundara.3.42)
tatastu hanumān prājñastām dṛṣṭvā vinipātitām || kṛpām cakāra tejasvī manyamānaḥ striyam tu tām || 3.42 ||
Then Hanuman, the wise and glorious one, seeing her thus laid low, and considering her still to be a woman, showed her compassion.
Shloka 43 (sundara.3.43)
tato vai bhṛśasamvignā laṅkā gadgadākṣaram || uvācāgarvitam vākyam hanūmantam plavaṅgamam || 3.43 ||
Then that Lanka, deeply shaken, spoke in a faltering, humbled voice to Hanuman the monkey:
Shloka 44 (sundara.3.44)
prasīda sumahābāho trāyasva harisattama || samaye saumya tiṣṭhanti sttvavanto mahābalāḥ || 3.44 ||
"Be gracious, O mighty-armed one! Protect me, O best of monkeys! O gentle one, the truly strong and courageous ever hold firm to what is right."
Shloka 45 (sundara.3.45)
ahaṃ tu nagarī laṅkā svayameva plavaṅgama || nirjitāham tvayā vīra vikrameṇa mahābala || 3.45 ||
"I myself am the city of Lanka, O monkey! I have been defeated by your might and valour, O hero, O mighty one."
Shloka 46 (sundara.3.46)
idam tu tathyam śṛṇu vai bruvantya me harīśvara || svayambhuvā purā dattam varadānam yathā mama || 3.46 ||
"Hear now this truth, O lord of monkeys, as I speak it to you -- how, long ago, Brahma the Self-born granted me a boon:"
Shloka 47 (sundara.3.47)
yadā tvām vānaraḥ kaścidvikramādvaśamānayet || tadā tvayā hi vijñeyam rakṣasām bhayāmāgatam || 3.47 ||
"-- that whenever a monkey shall overpower you by his valour, then you must know that fear has come upon the rakshasas."
Shloka 48 (sundara.3.48)
sa hi m samayaḥ saumya prāpto'ya tava drśanāt || svayambhūvihitaḥ satyo na tasyāsti vyatikramaḥ || 3.48 ||
"That very time, O gentle one, has now arrived for me, with the sight of you. The ordinance made by the Self-born is true, and it admits of no transgression."
Shloka 49 (sundara.3.49)
sītānimittaṃm rājñastu rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ | rakṣasāṃ caiva sarveṣāṃ vināśaḥ samupāgataḥ || 3.49 ||
"On account of Sita, ruin has now come close upon the evil-minded king Ravana, and upon all the rakshasas as well."
Shloka 50 (sundara.3.50)
tatpraviśya hariśreṣṭham purīm rāvaṇapālitām || vidhatsva sarvakāryāṇ yāni yānīha vāñcasi || 3.50 ||
"Therefore, O best of monkeys, enter this city ruled by Ravana, and accomplish here whatever tasks you desire."
Shloka 51 (sundara.3.51)

"Enter, O lord of monkeys, this fair city, stricken by a curse and ruled by the king of the rakshasas; and roaming freely wherever you will, search at your ease for the chaste daughter of Janaka."
