Sita's Doubt and Hanuman's Farewell
Shloka 1 (sundara.39.1)
मणिं दत्त्वा ततः सीता हनूमन्तमथाब्रवीत्। अभिज्ञानमभिज्ञातमेतद् रामस्य तत्त्वतः ॥ 39.1 ॥
maṇiṃ dattvā tataḥ sītā hanūmantamathābravīt| abhijñānamabhijñātametad rāmasya tattvataḥ || 39.1 ||
Having given the jewel, Sita then said to Hanuman: "This token, once recognized, will truly be recognized by Rama."
Shloka 2 (sundara.39.2)
मणिं दृष्ट्वा तु रामो वै त्रयाणां संस्मरिष्यति। वीरो जनन्या मम च राज्ञो दशरथस्य च ॥ 39.2 ॥
maṇiṃ dṛṣṭvā tu rāmo vai trayāṇāṃ saṃsmariṣyati| vīro jananyā mama ca rājño daśarathasya ca || 39.2 ||
"Seeing this jewel, the valiant Rama will surely recall three persons: my mother, and myself, and King Dasharatha."
Shloka 3 (sundara.39.3)
स भूयस्त्वं समुत्साहचोदितो हरिसत्तम। अस्मिन् कार्यसमुत्साहे प्रचिन्तय यदुत्तरम् ॥ 39.3 ॥
sa bhūyastvaṃ samutsāhacodito harisattama| asmin kāryasamutsāhe pracintaya yaduttaram || 39.3 ||
"So once more, O best of monkeys, spurred by great zeal, consider carefully what further should be done in this task."
Shloka 4 (sundara.39.4)
त्वमस्मिन् कार्यनिर्योगे प्रमाणं हरिसत्तम। तस्य चिन्तय यो यत्नो दुःखक्षयकरो भवेत् ॥ 39.4 ॥
tvamasmin kāryaniryoge pramāṇaṃ harisattama| tasya cintaya yo yatno duḥkhakṣayakaro bhavet || 39.4 ||
"You, O best of monkeys, are the authority in the accomplishment of this task; think of what effort would bring my sorrow to an end."
Shloka 5 (sundara.39.5)
हनूमन् यत्नमास्थाय दुःखक्षयकरो भव। स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः ॥ 39.5 ॥
hanūman yatnamāsthāya duḥkhakṣayakaro bhava| sa tatheti pratijñāya mārutirbhīmavikramaḥ || 39.5 ||
"'O Hanuman, undertake the effort and become the destroyer of my sorrow.' So bidden, Maruti of terrible valour, saying 'so be it,'"
Shloka 6 (sundara.39.6)
शिरसाऽऽवन्द्य वैदेहीं गमनायोपचक्रमे। ज्ञात्वा सम्प्रस्थितं देवी वानरं पवनात्मजम् ॥ 39.6 ॥
śirasā''vandya vaidehīṃ gamanāyopacakrame| jñātvā samprasthitaṃ devī vānaraṃ pavanātmajam || 39.6 ||
bowed his head to Vaidehi and set out to depart. Knowing the wind-born monkey ready to leave, the princess,
Shloka 7 (sundara.39.7)
बाष्पगद्गदया वाचा मैथिली वाक्यमब्रवीत्। हनूमन् कुशलं ब्रूयाः सहितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥ 39.7 ॥
bāṣpagadagadayā vācā maithilī vākyamabravīt| hanūman kuśalaṃ brūyāḥ sahitau rāmalakṣmaṇau || 39.7 ||
with a voice choked with tears, spoke thus: "O Hanuman, convey my greeting of welfare to Rama and Lakshmana together,"
Shloka 8 (sundara.39.8)
सुग्रीवं च सहामात्यं सर्वान् वृद्धांश्च वानरान्। ब्रूयास्त्वं वानरश्रेष्ठ कुशलं धर्मसंहितम् ॥ 39.8 ॥
sugrīvaṃ ca sahāmātyaṃ sarvān vṛddhāṃśca vānarān| brūyāstvaṃ vānaraśreṣṭha kuśalaṃ dharmasaṃhitam || 39.8 ||
"and to Sugriva with his ministers, and to all the elder monkeys; O best of monkeys, convey to them a greeting joined with righteousness."
Shloka 9 (sundara.39.9)
यथा च स महाबाहुर्मां तारयति राघवः। अस्माद् दुःखाम्बुसंरोधात् त्वं समाधातुमर्हसि ॥ 39.9 ॥
yathā ca sa mahābāhurmāṃ tārayati rāghavaḥ| asmād duḥkhāmbusaṃrodhāt tvaṃ samādhātumarhasi || 39.9 ||
"And in whatever way that mighty-armed Raghava may deliver me from this ocean of grief, you should so arrange it."
Shloka 10 (sundara.39.10)
जीवन्तीं मां यथा रामः सम्भावयति कीर्तिमान्। तत् त्वया हनुमन् वाच्यं वाचा धर्ममवाप्नुहि ॥ 39.10 ॥
jīvantīṃ māṃ yathā rāmaḥ sambhāvayati kīrtimān| tat tvayā hanuman vācyaṃ vācā dharmamavāpnuhi || 39.10 ||
"So that glorious Rama may hold me still living in his esteem — speak such words to him, O Hanuman, and thereby attain righteousness."
Shloka 11 (sundara.39.11)
नित्यमुत्साहयुक्तस्य वाचः श्रुत्वा मयेरिताः। वर्धिष्यते दाशरथेः पौरुषं मदवाप्तये ॥ 39.11 ॥
nityamutsāhayuktasya vācaḥ śrutvā mayeritāḥ| vardhiṣyate dāśaratheḥ pauruṣaṃ madavāptaye || 39.11 ||
"Hearing these words, spoken by me who am ever full of zeal, the manliness of Dasharatha's son will grow further, that he may attain me."
Shloka 12 (sundara.39.12)
मत्संदेशयुता वाचस्त्वत्तः श्रुत्वैव राघवः। पराक्रमे मतिं वीरो विधिवत् संविधास्यति ॥ 39.12 ॥
matsaṃdeśayutā vācastvattaḥ śrutvaiva rāghavaḥ| parākrame matiṃ vīro vidhivat saṃvidhāsyati || 39.12 ||
"Hearing from you these words bearing my message, valiant Raghava will fix his mind, duly and rightly, upon his valorous course."
Shloka 13 (sundara.39.13)
सीतायास्तद् वचः श्रुत्वा हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः। शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवीत् ॥ 39.13 ॥
sītāyāstad vacaḥ śrutvā hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ| śirasyañjalimādhāya vākyamuttaramabravīt || 39.13 ||
Hearing Sita's words, Hanuman, son of the wind-god, placing his joined palms upon his head, spoke in reply:
Shloka 14 (sundara.39.14)
क्षिप्रमेष्यति काकुत्स्थो हर्यृक्षप्रवरैर्वृतः। यस्ते युधि विजित्यारीन् शोकं व्यपनयिष्यति ॥ 39.14 ॥
kṣiprameṣyati kākutstho haryṛkṣapravarairvṛtaḥ| yaste yudhi vijityārīn śokaṃ vyapanayiṣyati || 39.14 ||
"Kakutstha will come swiftly, surrounded by the foremost of monkeys and bears; he who, conquering his foes in battle, will drive away your grief."
Shloka 15 (sundara.39.15)
नहि पश्यामि मर्त्येषु नासुरेषु सुरेषु वा। यस्तस्य वमतो बाणान् स्थातुमुत्सहतेऽग्रतः ॥ 39.15 ॥
nahi paśyāmi martyeṣu nāsureṣu sureṣu vā| yastasya vamato bāṇān sthātumutsahate'grataḥ || 39.15 ||
"I see none among mortals, nor among demons, nor even among gods, who could stand before him as he releases his arrows."
Shloka 16 (sundara.39.16)
अप्यर्कमपि पर्जन्यमपि वैवस्वतं यमम्। स हि सोढुं रणे शक्तस्तव हेतोर्विशेषतः ॥ 39.16 ॥
apyarkamapi parjanyamapi vaivasvataṃ yamam| sa hi soḍhuṃ raṇe śaktastava hetorviśeṣataḥ || 39.16 ||
"Even the sun, even the rain-cloud, even Yama the lord of death — he is able to withstand them in battle, especially for your sake."
Shloka 17 (sundara.39.17)
स हि सागरपर्यन्तां महीं साधितुमर्हति। त्वन्निमित्तो हि रामस्य जयो जनकनन्दिनि ॥ 39.17 ॥
sa hi sāgaraparyantāṃ mahīṃ sādhitumarhati| tvannimitto hi rāmasya jayo janakanandini || 39.17 ||
"He is worthy to conquer the whole earth to its ocean's rim; O Janaka's daughter, it is for your sake alone that Rama's victory matters."
Shloka 18 (sundara.39.18)
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा सम्यक् सत्यं सुभाषितम्। जानकी बहु मेने तं वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥ 39.18 ॥
tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā samyak satyaṃ subhāṣitam| jānakī bahu mene taṃ vacanaṃ cedamabravīt || 39.18 ||
Hearing his words, so true and so well spoken, Janaki thought highly of them, and then spoke thus:
Shloka 19 (sundara.39.19)
ततस्तं प्रस्थितं सीता वीक्षमाणा पुनः पुनः। भर्तृस्नेहान्वितं वाक्यं सौहार्दादनुमानयत् ॥ 39.19 ॥
tatastaṃ prasthitaṃ sītā vīkṣamāṇā punaḥ punaḥ| bhartṛsnehānvitaṃ vākyaṃ sauhārdādanumānayat || 39.19 ||
Then Sita, gazing again and again at him as he set out to depart, out of affection reflected upon words full of a wife's love for her lord:
Shloka 20 (sundara.39.20)
यदि वा मन्यसे वीर वसैकाहमरिंदम। कस्मिंश्चित् संवृते देशे विश्रान्तः श्वो गमिष्यसि ॥ 39.20 ॥
yadi vā manyase vīra vasaikāhamariṃdama| kasmiṃścit saṃvṛte deśe viśrāntaḥ śvo gamiṣyasi || 39.20 ||
"Or if you think it fit, O hero, tamer of foes, stay just one day, resting in some hidden place, and depart tomorrow."
Shloka 21 (sundara.39.21)
मम चैवाल्पभाग्यायाः सांनिध्यात् तव वानर। अस्य शोकस्य महतो मुहूर्तं मोक्षणं भवेत् ॥ 39.21 ॥
mama caivālpabhāgyāyāḥ sāṃnidhyāt tava vānara| asya śokasya mahato muhūrtaṃ mokṣaṇaṃ bhavet || 39.21 ||
"For, O monkey, by your presence with me, ill-fated as I am, this great grief of mine might find a moment's release."
Shloka 22 (sundara.39.22)
ततो हि हरिशार्दूल पुनरागमनाय तु। प्राणानामपि संदेहो मम स्यान्नात्र संशयः ॥ 39.22 ॥
tato hi hariśārdūla punarāgamanāya tu| prāṇānāmapi saṃdeho mama syānnātra saṃśayaḥ || 39.22 ||
"For after that, O tiger among monkeys, I have no doubt at all — there would even be danger to my very life before your return."
Shloka 23 (sundara.39.23)
तवादर्शनजः शोको भूयो मां परितापयेत्। दुःखादुःखपरामृष्टां दीपयन्निव वानर ॥ 39.23 ॥
tavādarśanajaḥ śoko bhūyo māṃ paritāpayet| duḥkhāduḥkhaparāmṛṣṭāṃ dīpayanniva vānara || 39.23 ||
"The grief of not seeing you again, O monkey, would burn me all the more, adding sorrow upon a soul already touched by sorrow."
Shloka 24 (sundara.39.24)
अयं च वीर संदेहस्तिष्ठतीव ममाग्रतः। सुमहांस्त्वत्सहायेषु हर्यृक्षेषु हरीश्वर ॥ 39.24 ॥
ayaṃ ca vīra saṃdehastiṣṭhatīva mamāgrataḥ| sumahāṃstvatsahāyeṣu haryṛkṣeṣu harīśvara || 39.24 ||
"And this doubt too, O hero, stands as it were before me: a very great one, concerning your companions, the monkeys and bears, O lord of monkeys."
Shloka 25 (sundara.39.25)
कथं नु खलु दुष्पारं तरिष्यन्ति महोदधिम्। तानि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानि तौ वा नरवरात्मजौ ॥ 39.25 ॥
kathaṃ nu khalu duṣpāraṃ tariṣyanti mahodadhim| tāni haryṛkṣasainyāni tau vā naravarātmajau || 39.25 ||
"How indeed will those armies of monkeys and bears, or those two best of men, cross this hard-to-traverse great ocean?"
Shloka 26 (sundara.39.26)
त्रयाणामेव भूतानां सागरस्येह लङ्घने। शक्तिः स्याद् वैनतेयस्य तव वा मारुतस्य वा ॥ 39.26 ॥
trayāṇāmeva bhūtānāṃ sāgarasyeha laṅghane| śaktiḥ syād vainateyasya tava vā mārutasya vā || 39.26 ||
"For crossing this ocean, only three beings would have the power indeed: Vainateya, or you, or the wind-god himself."
Shloka 27 (sundara.39.27)
तदस्मिन् कार्यनिर्योगे वीरैवं दुरतिक्रमे। किं पश्यसे समाधानं त्वं हि कार्यविदां वरः ॥ 39.27 ॥
tadasmin kāryaniryoge vīraivaṃ duratikrame| kiṃ paśyase samādhānaṃ tvaṃ hi kāryavidāṃ varaḥ || 39.27 ||
"So, O hero, in this task so hard to accomplish, what solution do you see? For you are indeed the foremost among those who know how to act."
Shloka 28 (sundara.39.28)
काममस्य त्वमेवैकः कार्यस्य परिसाधने। पर्याप्तः परवीरघ्न यशस्यस्ते फलोदयः ॥ 39.28 ॥
kāmamasya tvamevaikaḥ kāryasya parisādhane| paryāptaḥ paravīraghna yaśasyaste phalodayaḥ || 39.28 ||
"To be sure, you alone would be quite sufficient to accomplish this task, O slayer of enemy heroes; the fruit and the fame of it would be yours."
Shloka 29 (sundara.39.29)
बलैः समग्रैर्युधि मां रावणं जित्य संयुगे। विजयी स्वपुरं यायात् तत्तस्य सदृशं भवेत् ॥ 39.29 ॥
balaiḥ samagrairyudhi māṃ rāvaṇaṃ jitya saṃyuge| vijayī svapuraṃ yāyāt tattasya sadṛśaṃ bhavet || 39.29 ||
"But if Rama, conquering Ravana in battle with his full army, should return victorious to his own city, that would befit him."
Shloka 30 (sundara.39.30)
बलैस्तु संकुलां कृत्वा लङ्कां परबलार्दनः। मां नयेद् यदि काकुत्स्थस्तत् तस्य सदृशं भवेत् ॥ 39.30 ॥
balaistu saṃkulāṃ kṛtvā laṅkāṃ parabalārdanaḥ| māṃ nayed yadi kākutsthastat tasya sadṛśaṃ bhavet || 39.30 ||
"And if Kakutstha, crusher of enemy armies, having filled Lanka with his forces, should himself lead me away, that would befit him."
Shloka 31 (sundara.39.31)
तद्यथा तस्य विक्रान्तमनुरूपं महात्मनः। भवेदाहवशूरस्य तथा त्वमुपपादय ॥ 39.31 ॥
tadyathā tasya vikrāntamanurūpaṃ mahātmanaḥ| bhavedāhavaśūrasya tathā tvamupapādaya || 39.31 ||
"So arrange things such that they befit the valour of that great soul, brave in battle, as is truly proper for him."
Shloka 32 (sundara.39.32)
तदर्थोपहितं वाक्यं प्रश्रितं हेतुसंहितम्। निशम्य हनुमान् शेषं वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवीत् ॥ 39.32 ॥
tadarthopahitaṃ vākyaṃ praśritaṃ hetusaṃhitam| niśamya hanumān śeṣaṃ vākyamuttaramabravīt || 39.32 ||
Hearing this speech, purposeful, courteous, and full of reasons, Hanuman listened to the end and then spoke his reply:
Shloka 33 (sundara.39.33)
देवि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानामीश्वरः प्लवतां वरः। सुग्रीवः सत्यसम्पन्नस्तवार्थे कृतनिश्चयः ॥ 39.33 ॥
devi haryṛkṣasainyānāmīśvaraḥ plavatāṃ varaḥ| sugrīvaḥ satyasampannastavārthe kṛtaniścayaḥ || 39.33 ||
"O princess, Sugriva, the lord of the monkey and bear armies, true to his word, is fully resolved on your behalf."
Shloka 34 (sundara.39.34)
स वानरसहस्राणां कोटीभिरभिसंवृतः। क्षिप्रमेष्यति वैदेहि राक्षसानां निबर्हणः ॥ 39.34 ॥
sa vānarasahasrāṇāṃ koṭībhirabhisaṃvṛtaḥ| kṣiprameṣyati vaidehi rākṣasānāṃ nibarhaṇaḥ || 39.34 ||
"Surrounded by tens of millions of monkeys, he, the destroyer of demons, will come swiftly, O Vaidehi."
Shloka 35 (sundara.39.35)
तस्य विक्रमसम्पन्नाः सत्त्ववन्तो महाबलाः। मनःसंकल्पसम्पाता निदेशे हरयः स्थिताः ॥ 39.35 ॥
tasya vikramasampannāḥ sattvavanto mahābalāḥ| manaḥsaṃkalpasampātā nideśe harayaḥ sthitāḥ || 39.35 ||
"His monkeys, endowed with valour, full of vigour, and mighty in strength, move as swiftly as a thought is formed, standing ready at his command."
Shloka 36 (sundara.39.36)
येषां नोपरि नाधस्तान्न तिर्यक् सज्जते गतिः। न च कर्मसु सीदन्ति महत्स्वमिततेजसः ॥ 39.36 ॥
yeṣāṃ nopari nādhastānna tiryak sajjate gatiḥ| na ca karmasu sīdanti mahatsvamitatejasaḥ || 39.36 ||
"Neither above, nor below, nor sideways does their course meet obstruction; and those of measureless splendour never falter, even in the greatest tasks."
Shloka 37 (sundara.39.37)
असकृत् तैर्महोत्साहैः ससागरधराधरा। प्रदक्षिणीकृता भूमिर्वायुमार्गानुसारिभिः ॥ 39.37 ॥
asakṛt tairmahotsāhaiḥ sasāgaradharādharā| pradakṣiṇīkṛtā bhūmirvāyumārgānusāribhiḥ || 39.37 ||
"Many times over, coursing the pathways of the wind, those men of great zeal have circled this earth together with its oceans and mountains."
Shloka 38 (sundara.39.38)
मद्विशिष्टाश्च तुल्याश्च सन्ति तत्र वनौकसः। मत्तः प्रत्यवरः कश्चिन्नास्ति सुग्रीवसंनिधौ ॥ 39.38 ॥
madviśiṣṭāśca tulyāśca santi tatra vanaukasaḥ| mattaḥ pratyavaraḥ kaścinnāsti sugrīvasaṃnidhau || 39.38 ||
"There are forest-dwellers there both my equal and my superior; none in Sugriva's presence is lesser than I."
Shloka 39 (sundara.39.39)
अहं तावदिह प्राप्तः किं पुनस्ते महाबलाः। नहि प्रकृष्टाः प्रेष्यन्ते प्रेष्यन्ते हीतरे जनाः ॥ 39.39 ॥
ahaṃ tāvadiha prāptaḥ kiṃ punaste mahābalāḥ| nahi prakṛṣṭāḥ preṣyante preṣyante hītare janāḥ || 39.39 ||
"If I alone have reached this far, how much more those of great strength! For it is never the finest who are sent — it is always the others who are sent."
Shloka 40 (sundara.39.40)
तदलं परितापेन देवि शोको व्यपैतु ते। एकोत्पातेन ते लङ्कामेष्यन्ति हरियूथपाः ॥ 39.40 ॥
tadalaṃ paritāpena devi śoko vyapaitu te| ekotpātena te laṅkāmeṣyanti hariyūthapāḥ || 39.40 ||
"So enough of this anguish, O princess; let your grief depart. In a single leap the lords of the monkeys will reach Lanka."
Shloka 41 (sundara.39.41)
मम पृष्ठगतौ तौ च चन्द्रसूर्याविवोदितौ। त्वत्सकाशं महासङ्घौ नृसिंहावागमिष्यतः ॥ 39.41 ॥
mama pṛṣṭhagatau tau ca candrasūryāvivoditau| tvatsakāśaṃ mahāsaṅghau nṛsiṃhāvāgamiṣyataḥ || 39.41 ||
"Those two lion-among-men, riding upon my back like the risen sun and moon, will come into your presence with their vast host."
Shloka 42 (sundara.39.42)
तौ हि वीरौ नरवरौ सहितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। आगम्य नगरीं लङ्कां सायकैर्विधमिष्यतः ॥ 39.42 ॥
tau hi vīrau naravarau sahitau rāmalakṣmaṇau| āgamya nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ sāyakairvidhamiṣyataḥ || 39.42 ||
"Those two heroes, foremost of men, Rama and Lakshmana together, will come to the city of Lanka and shatter it with their arrows."
Shloka 43 (sundara.39.43)
सगणं रावणं हत्वा राघवो रघुनन्दनः। त्वामादाय वरारोहे स्वपुरीं प्रति यास्यति ॥ 39.43 ॥
sagaṇaṃ rāvaṇaṃ hatvā rāghavo raghunandanaḥ| tvāmādāya varārohe svapurīṃ prati yāsyati || 39.43 ||
"Having slain Ravana with all his host, Raghava, delighter of the Raghus, will take you, O lovely one, back to his own city."
Shloka 44 (sundara.39.44)
तदाश्वसिहि भद्रं ते भव त्वं कालकाङ्क्षिणी। नचिराद् द्रक्ष्यसे रामं प्रज्वलन्तमिवानलम् ॥ 39.44 ॥
tadāśvasihi bhadraṃ te bhava tvaṃ kālakāṅkṣiṇī| nacirād drakṣyase rāmaṃ prajvalantamivānalam || 39.44 ||
"So take heart, may all be well with you; be one who awaits the hour with patience — before long you shall see Rama, blazing like fire."
Shloka 45 (sundara.39.45)
निहते राक्षसेन्द्रे च सपुत्रामात्यबान्धवे। त्वं समेष्यसि रामेण शशाङ्केनेव रोहिणी ॥ 39.45 ॥
nihate rākṣasendre ca saputrāmātyabāndhave| tvaṃ sameṣyasi rāmeṇa śaśāṅkeneva rohiṇī || 39.45 ||
"When the lord of demons is slain, with his sons, ministers and kinsmen, you shall be united with Rama, as Rohini with the moon."
Shloka 46 (sundara.39.46)
क्षिप्रं त्वं देवि शोकस्य पारं द्रक्ष्यसि मैथिलि। रावणं चैव रामेण द्रक्ष्यसे निहतं बलात् ॥ 39.46 ॥
kṣipraṃ tvaṃ devi śokasya pāraṃ drakṣyasi maithili| rāvaṇaṃ caiva rāmeṇa drakṣyase nihataṃ balāt || 39.46 ||
"Soon, O princess, O Maithili, you shall see the end of your grief, and shall see Ravana slain by Rama's might."
Shloka 47 (sundara.39.47)
एवमाश्वास्य वैदेहीं हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः। गमनाय मतिं कृत्वा वैदेहीं पुनरब्रवीत् ॥ 39.47 ॥
evamāśvāsya vaidehīṃ hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ| gamanāya matiṃ kṛtvā vaidehīṃ punarabravīt || 39.47 ||
Having thus consoled Vaidehi, Hanuman, son of the wind-god, resolved on departure, spoke once more to Vaidehi:
Shloka 48 (sundara.39.48)
तमरिघ्नं कृतात्मानं क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि राघवम्। लक्ष्मणं च धनुष्पाणिं लङ्काद्वारमुपागतम् ॥ 39.48 ॥
tamarighnaṃ kṛtātmānaṃ kṣipraṃ drakṣyasi rāghavam| lakṣmaṇaṃ ca dhanuṣpāṇiṃ laṅkādvāramupāgatam || 39.48 ||

नखदंष्ट्रायुधान् वीरान् सिंहशार्दूलविक्रमान्। वानरान् वारणेन्द्राभान् क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि संगतान् ॥ 39.49 ॥
nakhadaṃṣṭrāyudhān vīrān siṃhaśārdūlavikramān| vānarān vāraṇendrābhān kṣipraṃ drakṣyasi saṃgatān || 39.49 ||
"Soon you shall see gathered together heroic monkeys, armed with fang and claw, mighty as lions and tigers, resembling great tusked elephants."
Shloka 50 (sundara.39.50)
शैलाम्बुदनिकाशानां लङ्कामलयसानुषु। नर्दतां कपिमुख्यानामार्ये यूथान्यनेकशः ॥ 39.50 ॥
śailāmbudanikāśānāṃ laṅkāmalayasānuṣu| nardatāṃ kapimukhyānāmārye yūthānyanekaśaḥ || 39.50 ||
"On the slopes of Lanka's Malaya hills, O noble one, host upon host of foremost monkeys shall roar, resembling mountains of cloud."
Shloka 51 (sundara.39.51)
स तु मर्मणि घोरेण ताडितो मन्मथेषुणा। न शर्म लभते रामः सिंहार्दित इव द्विपः ॥ 39.51 ॥
sa tu marmaṇi ghoreṇa tāḍito manmatheṣuṇā| na śarma labhate rāmaḥ siṃhārdita iva dvipaḥ || 39.51 ||
"Struck to the core by the terrible arrow of the god of love, Rama finds no peace, like an elephant tormented by a lion."
Shloka 52 (sundara.39.52)
रुद मा देवि शोकेन मा भूत् ते मनसो भयम्। शचीव भर्त्रा शक्रेण सङ्गमेष्यसि शोभने ॥ 39.52 ॥
ruda mā devi śokena mā bhūt te manaso bhayam| śacīva bhartrā śakreṇa saṅgameṣyasi śobhane || 39.52 ||
"Weep no more, O princess, from grief; let no fear touch your heart. O gracious one, you shall be united with your lord, as Shachi with Indra."

रामाद् विशिष्टः कोऽन्योऽस्ति कश्चित् सौमित्रिणा समः। अग्निमारुतकल्पौ तौ भ्रातरौ तव संश्रयौ ॥ 39.53 ॥
rāmād viśiṣṭaḥ ko'nyo'sti kaścit saumitriṇā samaḥ| agnimārutakalpau tau bhrātarau tava saṃśrayau || 39.53 ||
"Who else is there superior to Rama, or any equal to Saumitri? Those two brothers, like fire and wind, are your true refuge."

नास्मिंश्चिरं वत्स्यसि देवि देशे रक्षोगणैरध्युषितेऽतिरौद्रे। न ते चिरादागमनं प्रियस्य क्षमस्व मत्संगमकालमात्रम् ॥ 39.54 ॥
nāsmiṃściraṃ vatsyasi devi deśe rakṣogaṇairadhyuṣite'tiraudre| na te cirādāgamanaṃ priyasya kṣamasva matsaṃgamakālamātram || 39.54 ||
"O princess, you shall not dwell long in this land, most dreadful, thronging with hosts of demons. Your beloved's coming is not far off — bear with this time of our parting a little longer."
