Vibhishana Pleads for Hanuman's Life

Shloka 1 (sundara.52.1)

तस्य तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा वानरस्य महात्मनः । आज्ञापयत् वधम् तस्य रावणः क्रोध मूर्चितः ॥ 52.1 ॥

tasya tat vacanam śrutvā vānarasya mahātmanaḥ | ājñāpayat vadham tasya rāvaṇaḥ krodha mūrcitaḥ || 52.1 ||

Hearing those words of the high-souled monkey, Ravana, maddened with rage, ordered that he be put to death.

Shloka 2 (sundara.52.2)

वधे तस्य समाज्ञप्ते रावणेन दुरात्मना । निवेदितवतो दौत्यम् न अनुमेने विभीषणः ॥ 52.2 ॥

vadhe tasya samājñapte rāvaṇena durātmanā | niveditavato dautyam na anumene vibhīṣaṇaḥ || 52.2 ||

When the evil-minded Ravana had ordered his death, Vibhishana did not agree to the killing of one who had come charged with the duty of a messenger.

Shloka 3 (sundara.52.3)

तम् रक्षो अधिपतिम् क्रुद्धम् तच् च कार्यम् उपस्थितम् । विदित्वा चिन्तयामास कार्यम् कार्य विधौ स्थितः ॥ 52.3 ॥

tam rakṣo adhipatim kruddham tac ca kāryam upasthitam | viditvā cintayāmāsa kāryam kārya vidhau sthitaḥ || 52.3 ||

Perceiving the enraged lord of the demons and the matter now at hand, Vibhishana, ever firm in right conduct, reflected on the proper course of action.

Shloka 4 (sundara.52.4)

निश्चित अर्थः ततः साम्ना आपूज्य शत्रुजित् अग्रजम् । उवाच हितम् अत्यर्थम् वाक्यम् वाक्य विशारदः ॥ 52.4 ॥

niścita arthaḥ tataḥ sāmnā āpūjya śatrujit agrajam | uvāca hitam atyartham vākyam vākya viśāradaḥ || 52.4 ||

Having settled his mind on what was right, Vibhishana, skilled in speech, honoured his elder brother and then spoke words of the greatest benefit to him.

Shloka 5 (sundara.52.5)

क्षमस्व रोषम् त्यज राक्षसेन्द्र । प्रसीद मद्वाक्यमिदम् शृणुष्व । वधम् न कुर्वन्ति परावरज्ञा । दूतस्य सन्तो वसुधाधिपेन्द्राः ॥ 52.5 ॥

kṣamasva roṣam tyaja rākṣasendra | prasīda madvākyamidam śṛṇuṣva | vadham na kurvanti parāvarajñā | dūtasya santo vasudhādhipendrāḥ || 52.5 ||

"Forgive, O lord of demons, give up your anger; be gracious and hear these words of mine — virtuous and excellent kings, who weigh consequence near and far, never put an envoy to death."

Shloka 6 (sundara.52.6)

राजन् धर्म विरुद्धम् च लोक वृत्तेः च गर्हितम् । तव च असदृशम् वीर कपेः अस्य प्रमापणम् ॥ 52.6 ॥

rājan dharma viruddham ca loka vṛtteḥ ca garhitam | tava ca asadṛśam vīra kapeḥ asya pramāpaṇam || 52.6 ||

"O king, killing this monkey is contrary to righteousness and is condemned by the ways of the world besides; O hero, it is unbecoming even of you."

Shloka 7 (sundara.52.7)

धर्मज्ञ्श्च कृतज्ञ्श्च राजधर्मविशारदः । परावरज्ञो भूतानाम् त्वमेव परमार्थवित् ॥ 52.7 ॥

dharmajñśca kṛtajñśca rājadharmaviśāradaḥ | parāvarajño bhūtānām tvameva paramārthavit || 52.7 ||

"You know what is right, you are grateful, you are versed in the duties of kings; you yourself know both cause and consequence, and you know the highest truth."

Shloka 8 (sundara.52.8)

गृह्यन्ते यदि रोषेण त्वादृशोऽपि विपश्चितः । ततः शास्त्रविपश्चित्त्वम् श्रम एव हि केवलम् ॥ 52.8 ॥

gṛhyante yadi roṣeṇa tvādṛśo'pi vipaścitaḥ | tataḥ śāstravipaścittvam śrama eva hi kevalam || 52.8 ||

"If even a learned man such as you falls under the sway of anger, then all his learning in the scriptures amounts to nothing but wasted effort."

Shloka 9 (sundara.52.9)

तस्मात्प्रसीद शत्रुघ्न राक्षसेन्द्र दुरासद । ततः शास्त्रविपश्चित्त्वम् श्रम एव हि केवल्म् ॥ 52.9 ॥

tasmātprasīda śatrughna rākṣasendra durāsada | tataḥ śāstravipaścittvam śrama eva hi kevalm || 52.9 ||

"Therefore, O destroyer of foes, O lord of demons hard to approach, be gracious; let punishment for this envoy be decided only after weighing what is right and what is wrong."

Shloka 10 (sundara.52.10)

विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः । रोषेण महताविष्टो वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवीत् ॥ 52.10 ॥

vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ | roṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭo vākyamuttaramabravīt || 52.10 ||

Hearing Vibhishana's words, Ravana, lord of the demons, overcome with great anger, spoke the following words in reply.

Shloka 11 (sundara.52.11)

न पापानाम् वधे पापम् विद्यते शत्रुसूदन । तस्मादेनम् वधिष्यामि वानरम् पापचारिणम् ॥ 52.11 ॥

na pāpānām vadhe pāpam vidyate śatrusūdana | tasmādenam vadhiṣyāmi vānaram pāpacāriṇam || 52.11 ||

"O destroyer of foes, there is no sin in slaying sinners; therefore I shall surely kill this wicked monkey."

Shloka 12 (sundara.52.12)

अधर्ममूलम् बहुदोषयुक्त । मनार्यजुष्टम् वचनम् निशम्य । उवाच वाक्यम् परमार्थतत्त्वम् । विभीषणो बुद्धिमताम् वरिष्ठः ॥ 52.12 ॥

adharmamūlam bahudoṣayukta | manāryajuṣṭam vacanam niśamya | uvāca vākyam paramārthatattvam | vibhīṣaṇo buddhimatām variṣṭhaḥ || 52.12 ||

Hearing those words, rooted in unrighteousness, laden with fault, and fit only for the ignoble, Vibhishana, wisest among the wise, spoke words steeped in the highest truth.

Shloka 13 (sundara.52.13)

प्रसीद लङ्केश्वर राक्षसेन्द्र । धर्मार्थयुक्तम् वचनम् शृणुष्व । दूतानवध्यान् समयेषु राजन् । सर्वेषु सर्वत्र वदन्ति सन्तः ॥ 52.13 ॥

prasīda laṅkeśvara rākṣasendra | dharmārthayuktam vacanam śṛṇuṣva | dūtānavadhyān samayeṣu rājan | sarveṣu sarvatra vadanti santaḥ || 52.13 ||

"Be gracious, O lord of Lanka, O king of demons; hear my words, founded on righteousness and true purpose — O king, the virtuous everywhere and at all times declare that envoys are not to be slain."

Shloka 14 (sundara.52.14)

असंशयम् शत्रुः अयम् प्रवृद्धः । कृतम् हि अनेन अप्रियम् अप्रमेयम् । न दूत वध्याम् प्रवदन्ति सन्तो । दूतस्य दृष्टा बहवो हि दण्डाः ॥ 52.14 ॥

asaṃśayam śatruḥ ayam pravṛddhaḥ | kṛtam hi anena apriyam aprameyam | na dūta vadhyām pravadanti santo | dūtasya dṛṣṭā bahavo hi daṇḍāḥ || 52.14 ||

"There is no doubt this enemy has grown insolent, and has caused us immeasurable displeasure; yet the virtuous never speak of killing an envoy — for an envoy, indeed, many other punishments are prescribed."

Shloka 15 (sundara.52.15)

वैरूप्याम् अन्गेषु कश अभिघातो । मौण्ड्यम् तथा लक्ष्मण सम्निपातः । एतान् हि दूते प्रवदन्ति दण्डान् । वधः तु दूतस्य न नः श्रुतो अपि ॥ 52.15 ॥

vairūpyām angeṣu kaśa abhighāto | mauṇḍyam tathā lakṣmaṇa samnipātaḥ | etān hi dūte pravadanti daṇḍān | vadhaḥ tu dūtasya na naḥ śruto api || 52.15 ||

"Disfiguring the limbs, striking with a whip, shaving the head, or branding the body with marks — these alone are declared to be the punishments for an envoy; but of the killing of an envoy we have never heard."

Shloka 16 (sundara.52.16)

कथम् च धर्म अर्थ विनीत बुद्धिः । पर अवर प्रत्यय निश्चित अर्थः । भवत् विधः कोप वशे हि तिष्ठेत् । कोपम् नियच्छन्ति हि सत्त्ववन्तः ॥ 52.16 ॥

katham ca dharma artha vinīta buddhiḥ | para avara pratyaya niścita arthaḥ | bhavat vidhaḥ kopa vaśe hi tiṣṭhet | kopam niyacchanti hi sattvavantaḥ || 52.16 ||

"How can one such as you, whose mind is trained in righteousness and true purpose, whose judgement of cause and consequence is sure, remain in the grip of anger? For men of true fortitude always hold their anger in check."

Shloka 17 (sundara.52.17)

न धर्म वादे न च लोक वृत्ते । न शास्त्र बुद्धि ग्रहणेषु वा अपि । विद्येत कश्चित् तव वीर तुल्यः । त्वम् हि उत्तमः सर्व सुर असुराणाम् ॥ 52.17 ॥

na dharma vāde na ca loka vṛtte | na śāstra buddhi grahaṇeṣu vā api | vidyeta kaścit tava vīra tulyaḥ | tvam hi uttamaḥ sarva sura asurāṇām || 52.17 ||

"O hero, there is none your equal in discourse on righteousness, in the ways of the world, or in grasping the wisdom of the scriptures — you are indeed foremost among all gods and demons."

Shloka 18 (sundara.52.18)

शूरेण वीरेण निशाचरेन्द्र । सुरासुराणामपि दुर्जयेन । त्वया प्रगल्भाः सुरदैत्यसम्घा । जिताश्च युद्धेष्वसकृन्नरेन्द्राः ॥ 52.18 ॥

śūreṇa vīreṇa niśācarendra | surāsurāṇāmapi durjayena | tvayā pragalbhāḥ suradaityasamghā | jitāśca yuddheṣvasakṛnnarendrāḥ || 52.18 ||

"O lord of night-wanderers, valiant and heroic, unconquerable even by gods and demons, you have many times in battle overcome proud hosts of gods and titans together with their kings."

Shloka 19 (sundara.52.19)

न च अपि अस्य कपेः घाते कंचित् पश्यामि अहम् गुणम् । तेष्व् अयम् पात्यताम् दण्डो यैः अयम् प्रेषितः कपिः ॥ 52.19 ॥

na ca api asya kapeḥ ghāte kaṃcit paśyāmi aham guṇam | teṣv ayam pātyatām daṇḍo yaiḥ ayam preṣitaḥ kapiḥ || 52.19 ||

"I see no merit whatsoever in killing this monkey; let this punishment instead fall upon those by whom this monkey was sent."

Shloka 20 (sundara.52.20)

साधुः वा यदि वा असाधुः परैः एष समर्पितः । ब्रुवन् पर अर्थम् परवान् न दूतो वधम् अर्हति ॥ 52.20 ॥

sādhuḥ vā yadi vā asādhuḥ paraiḥ eṣa samarpitaḥ | bruvan para artham paravān na dūto vadham arhati || 52.20 ||

"Whether good or bad, he has been sent by our enemies; an envoy, who speaks for another's cause and is dependent on another, does not deserve death."

Shloka 21 (sundara.52.21)

अपि च अस्मिन् हते राजन् न अन्यम् पश्यामि खे चरम् । इह यः पुनः आगच्छेत् परम् पारम् महाउदधिः ॥ 52.21 ॥

api ca asmin hate rājan na anyam paśyāmi khe caram | iha yaḥ punaḥ āgacchet param pāram mahāudadhiḥ || 52.21 ||

"Moreover, O king, if he is slain, I see no other who could traverse the sky and come again here, to this shore of the great ocean."

Shloka 22 (sundara.52.22)

तस्मान् न अस्य वधे यत्नः कार्यः पर पुरम् जय । भवान् स इन्द्रेषु देवेषु यत्नम् आस्थातुम् अर्हति ॥ 52.22 ॥

tasmān na asya vadhe yatnaḥ kāryaḥ para puram jaya | bhavān sa indreṣu deveṣu yatnam āsthātum arhati || 52.22 ||

"Therefore, O conqueror of enemy cities, make no effort to kill him; rather, you ought to direct your effort against the gods, Indra among them."

Shloka 23 (sundara.52.23)

अस्मिन् विनष्टे न हि दूतम् अन्यम् । पश्यामि यः तौ नर राज पुत्रौ । युद्धाय युद्ध प्रिय दुर्विनीताव् । उद्योजयेत् दीर्घ पथ अवरुद्धौ ॥ 52.23 ॥

asmin vinaṣṭe na hi dūtam anyam | paśyāmi yaḥ tau nara rāja putrau | yuddhāya yuddha priya durvinītāv | udyojayet dīrgha patha avaruddhau || 52.23 ||

"O lover of battle, if he perishes, I see no other hero who could rouse those two indomitable princes, held back by so long a road, to come to war."

Shloka 24 (sundara.52.24)

पराक्रम उत्साह मनस्विनाम् च । सुर असुराणाम् अपि दुर्जयेन । त्वया मनो नन्दन नैरृतानाम् । युद्ध आयतिः नाशयितुम् न युक्ता ॥ 52.24 ॥

parākrama utsāha manasvinām ca | sura asurāṇām api durjayena | tvayā mano nandana nairṛtānām | yuddha āyatiḥ nāśayitum na yuktā || 52.24 ||

"O you who gladden the hearts of the night-wanderers, endowed with valour, energy, and resolve, unconquerable even by gods and demons — it is not fitting for you to cut off the coming battle at its root."

Shloka 25 (sundara.52.25)

हिताः च शूराः च समाहिताः च । कुलेषु जाताः च महागुणेषु । मनस्विनः शस्त्रभृताम् वरिष्ठाः । कोटि अग्र शस्ते सुभृताः च योधाः ॥ 52.25 ॥

hitāḥ ca śūrāḥ ca samāhitāḥ ca | kuleṣu jātāḥ ca mahāguṇeṣu | manasvinaḥ śastrabhṛtām variṣṭhāḥ | koṭi agra śaste subhṛtāḥ ca yodhāḥ || 52.25 ||

"You have well-provided soldiers numbering more than a crore, loyal, valiant, vigilant, born in houses of great merit, high-spirited, and foremost among wielders of weapons."

Shloka 26 (sundara.52.26)

तत् एक देशेन बलस्य तावत् । केचित् तव आदेश कृतो अपयान्तु । तौ राज पुत्रौ विनिगृह्य मूढौ । परेषु ते भावयितुम् प्रभावम् ॥ 52.26 ॥

tat eka deśena balasya tāvat | kecit tava ādeśa kṛto apayāntu | tau rāja putrau vinigṛhya mūḍhau | pareṣu te bhāvayitum prabhāvam || 52.26 ||

"So let some, acting on your command, go forth with a portion of the army, subdue those two foolish princes, and thereby make your might known to your foes."

Shloka 27 (sundara.52.27)

निशाचराणामधिपोऽनुजस्य । विभीषणस्योत्तमवाक्यमिष्टम् । जग्राह बुद्ध्या सुरलोकशत्रु । र्महाबलो राक्षसराजमुख्यः ॥ 52.27 ॥

niśācarāṇāmadhipo'nujasya | vibhīṣaṇasyottamavākyamiṣṭam | jagrāha buddhyā suralokaśatru | rmahābalo rākṣasarājamukhyaḥ || 52.27 ||

The mighty and eminent king of demons, lord of the night-wanderers and adversary of the world of the gods, took to heart with his own understanding the excellent and welcome counsel of his younger brother Vibhishana.
