Shloka 1 (sundara.57.1)

āplutya ca mahāvegaḥ pakṣavāniva parvataḥ| bhujaṅgayakṣagandharvaprabuddhakamalotpalam || 57.1 ||

And leaping with tremendous speed, like a winged mountain, across that sky-ocean whose lotuses and blue lotuses had been made to bloom by nagas, yakshas, and gandharvas —

Shloka 2 (sundara.57.2)

sa candrakumudaṃ ramyaṃ sārkakāraṇḍavaṃ śubham| tiṣyaśravaṇakādambamabhraśaivalaśādvalam || 57.2 ||

— that lovely, auspicious sky-ocean, in which the moon was its white water-lily, the sun its karandava-duck, the constellations Pushya and Shravana its flock of wild geese, the clouds its moss and water-weed —

Shloka 3 (sundara.57.3)

punarvasumahāmīnaṃ lohitāṅgamahāgraham| airāvatamahādvīpaṃ svātīhaṃsavilāsitam || 57.3 ||

— the Punarvasu constellation its great fish, the red planet Mars its great crocodile, the Airavata asterism its vast island, graced by the Svati star as its swan —

Shloka 4 (sundara.57.4)

vātasaṃghātajālormicandrāṃśuśiśirāmbumat| hanūmānapariśrāntaḥ pupluve gaganārṇavam || 57.4 ||

— with gusts of wind as its network of waves, moonbeams as its cool water — that sky-ocean did Hanuman leap across, unwearied.

Shloka 5 (sundara.57.5)

grasamāna ivākāśaṃ tārādhipamivollikhan| haranniva sanakṣatraṃ gaganaṃ sārkamaṇḍalam || 57.5 ||

As if swallowing the very sky, as if grazing the moon, as if carrying off the whole heaven together with its stars and the sun's orb,

Shloka 6 (sundara.57.6)

apāramapariśrāntaścāmbudhiṃ samagāhata| hanūmān meghajālāni vikarṣanniva gacchati || 57.6 ||

— unwearied, he plunged into that boundless expanse. Hanuman went on as though dragging apart the masses of clouds.

Shloka 7 (sundara.57.7)

pāṇḍurāruṇavarṇāni nīlamāñjiṣṭhakāni ca| haritāruṇavarṇāni mahābhrāṇi cakāśire || 57.7 ||

Great clouds of pale-red hue, of blue and madder-red, and of green and russet, shone brightly around him.

Shloka 8 (sundara.57.8)

praviśannabhrajālāni niṣkramaṃśca punaḥ punaḥ| prakāśaścāprakāśaśca candramā iva dṛśyate || 57.8 ||

Entering the banks of cloud and emerging again and again, now visible, now hidden, he appeared like the moon.

Shloka 9 (sundara.57.9)

vividhābhraghanāpannagocaro dhavalāmbaraḥ| dṛśyādṛśyatanurvīrastathā candrāyate'mbare || 57.9 ||

That white-clad hero, his path lost in the various dense cloud-banks, his form now seen, now unseen, thus shone in the sky like the moon.

Shloka 10 (sundara.57.10)

tārkṣyāyamāṇo gagane sa babhau vāyunandanaḥ| dārayan meghavṛndāni niṣpataṃśca punaḥ punaḥ || 57.10 ||

Tearing through the banks of clouds and darting forth again and again, that son of the Wind-god shone in the sky as though he were Garuda himself.

Shloka 11 (sundara.57.11)

nadan nādena mahatā meghasvanamahāsvanaḥ| pravarān rākṣasān hatvā nāma viśrāvya cātmanaḥ || 57.11 ||

Roaring with a mighty roar as loud as the thunder of clouds — he who, having slain the foremost demons and proclaimed his own name,

Shloka 12 (sundara.57.12)

ākulāṃ nagarīṃ kṛtvā vyathayitvā ca rāvaṇam| ardayitvā mahāvīrān vaidehīmabhivādya ca || 57.12 ||

— having thrown the city into confusion, having caused Ravana anguish, having crushed the great warriors, and having saluted Vaidehi —

Shloka 13 (sundara.57.13)

ājagāma mahātejāḥ punarmadhyena sāgaram| parvatendraṃ sunābhaṃ ca samupaspṛśya vīryavān || 57.13 ||

— that greatly radiant, valiant one came back once more across the middle of the ocean, and having touched the lord of mountains, Sunabha,

Shloka 14 (sundara.57.14)

jyāmukta iva nārāco mahāvego'bhyupāgamat| sa kiṃcidārāt samprāptaḥ samālokya mahāgirim || 57.14 ||

— sped onward with tremendous force, like an iron arrow loosed from the bowstring. Having drawn a little nearer and beheld that great mountain,

Shloka 15 (sundara.57.15)

mahendraṃ meghasaṃkāśaṃ nanāda sa mahākapiḥ| sa pūrayāmāsa kapirdiśo daśa samantataḥ || 57.15 ||

— Mount Mahendra, resembling a cloud, that great monkey let out a roar. That monkey filled all ten directions around him with his cry.

Shloka 16 (sundara.57.16)

nadan nādena mahatā meghasvanamahāsvanaḥ| sa taṃ deśamanuprāptaḥ suhṛddarśanalālasaḥ || 57.16 ||

Roaring with a mighty roar as loud as thunder, he, eager to see his friends, having reached that region,

Shloka 17 (sundara.57.17)

nanāda sumahānādaṃ lāṅgūlaṃ cāpyakampayat| tasya nānadyamānasya suparṇācarite pathi || 57.17 ||

— let out a tremendous roar and made his tail quiver too. As he, on that sky-path traversed by Garuda, roared again and again,

Shloka 18 (sundara.57.18)

phalatīvāsya ghoṣeṇa gaganaṃ sārkamaṇḍalam| ye tu tatrottare kūle samudrasya mahābalāḥ || 57.18 ||

— the sky, with the sun's very orb, seemed to split open at the sound of his roar. And those mighty ones who, on the northern shore of the ocean —

Shloka 19 (sundara.57.19)

pūrvaṃ saṃviṣṭhitāḥ śūrā vāyuputradidṛkṣavaḥ| mahato vāyununnasya toyadasyeva niḥsvanam| śuśruvuste tadā ghoṣamūruvegaṃ hanūmataḥ || 57.19 ||

— heroes who had been stationed there since before, eager to see the son of the Wind-god, then heard the sound of Hanuman's mighty thigh-strokes, resembling the roar of a great, wind-driven rain-cloud.

Shloka 20 (sundara.57.20)

te dīnamanasaḥ sarve śuśruvuḥ kānanaukasaḥ| vānarendrasya nirghoṣaṃ parjanyaninadopamam || 57.20 ||

All those forest-dwelling monkeys, downcast in mind, heard the roar of that lord of monkeys, resembling the thunder of the rain-clouds.

Shloka 21 (sundara.57.21)

niśamya nadato nādaṃ vānarāste samantataḥ| babhūvurutsukāḥ sarve suhṛddarśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ || 57.21 ||

Hearing the roar of him who thus cried out, those monkeys all around became eager, longing to see their friend.

Shloka 22 (sundara.57.22)

jāmbavān sa hariśreṣṭhaḥ prītisaṃhṛṣṭamānasaḥ| upāmantrya harīn sarvānidaṃ vacanamabravīt || 57.22 ||

Jambavan, foremost of the monkeys, his heart thrilled with joy, having summoned all the monkeys, spoke these words.

Shloka 23 (sundara.57.23)

sarvathā kṛtakāryo'sau hanūmān nātra saṃśayaḥ| na hyasyākṛtakāryasya nāda evaṃvidho bhavet || 57.23 ||

"Without doubt, this Hanuman has in every way accomplished his task; for had his task remained unfulfilled, his roar would not be of this kind."

Shloka 24 (sundara.57.24)

tasya bāhūruvegaṃ ca ninādaṃ ca mahātmanaḥ| niśamya harayo hṛṣṭāḥ samutpeturyatastataḥ || 57.24 ||

Hearing the force of that great one's arms and thighs, and his roar, the delighted monkeys leapt up from every side.

Shloka 25 (sundara.57.25)

te nagāgrānnagāgrāṇi śikharācchikharāṇi ca| prahṛṣṭāḥ samapadyanta hanūmantaṃ didṛkṣavaḥ || 57.25 ||

Overjoyed, longing to see Hanuman, they sprang from treetop to treetop, and from mountain-peak to mountain-peak.

Shloka 26 (sundara.57.26)

te prītāḥ pādapāgreṣu gṛhya śākhāmavasthitāḥ| vāsāṃsi ca prakāśāni samāvidhyanta vānarāḥ || 57.26 ||

Those delighted monkeys, standing at the treetops with branches in hand, waved their bright garments.

Shloka 27 (sundara.57.27)

girigahvarasaṃlīno yathā garjati mārutaḥ| evaṃ jagarja balavān hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ || 57.27 ||

As the wind roars when it settles within a mountain cave, so did the mighty Hanuman, son of the Wind-god, roar.

Shloka 28 (sundara.57.28)

tamabhraghanasaṃkāśamāpatantaṃ mahākapim| dṛṣṭvā te vānarāḥ sarve tasthuḥ prāñjalayastadā || 57.28 ||

Seeing that great monkey descending, resembling a dense cloud, all those monkeys then stood there with joined palms.

Shloka 29 (sundara.57.29)

tatastu vegavān vīro girergirinibhaḥ kapiḥ| nipapāta girestasya śikhare pādapākule || 57.29 ||

Then that swift hero, that mountain-like monkey, alighted upon the summit of that mountain, thick with trees.

Shloka 30 (sundara.57.30)

harṣeṇāpūryamāṇo'sau ramye parvatanirjhare| chinnapakṣa ivākāśāt papāta dharaṇīdharaḥ || 57.30 ||

Brimming with joy, he, like a mountain whose wings had been shorn, fell from the sky into that lovely mountain-cascade.

Shloka 31 (sundara.57.31)

tataste prītamanasaḥ sarve vānarapuṅgavāḥ| hanūmantaṃ mahātmānaṃ parivāryopatasthire || 57.31 ||

Then all those glad-hearted, foremost monkeys gathered around the great-souled Hanuman and stood close by him.

Shloka 32 (sundara.57.32)

parivārya ca te sarve parāṃ prītimupāgatāḥ| prahṛṣṭavadanāḥ sarve tamāgatamupāgaman || 57.32 ||

Having surrounded him, all filled with the greatest joy, their faces beaming with delight, they all came up to him who had returned.

Shloka 33 (sundara.57.33)

upāyanāni cādāya mūlāni ca phalāni ca| pratyarcayan hariśreṣṭhaṃ harayo mārutātmajam || 57.33 ||

Bringing gift-offerings of roots and fruits, the monkeys paid homage to that foremost of monkeys, the son of the Wind-god.

Shloka 34 (sundara.57.34)

vinedurmuditāḥ kecit kecit kilakilāṃ tathā| hṛṣṭāḥ pādapaśākhāśca āninyurvānararṣabhāḥ || 57.34 ||

Some, overjoyed, cried aloud; others made a chattering sound of glee; and those delighted bulls among monkeys brought branches of trees as well.

Shloka 35 (sundara.57.35)

hanūmāṃstu gurūn vṛddhāñjāmbavatpramukhāṃstadā| kumāramaṅgadaṃ caiva so'vandata mahākapiḥ || 57.35 ||

Then that great monkey Hanuman paid homage to his elders and seniors, headed by Jambavan, and to the prince Angada as well.

Shloka 36 (sundara.57.36)

sa tābhyāṃ pūjitaḥ pūjyaḥ kapibhiśca prasāditaḥ| dṛṣṭā devīti vikrāntaḥ saṃkṣepeṇa nyavedayat || 57.36 ||

Honored by those two, worthy of honor, and gladdened by the other monkeys as well, that valiant one announced in brief: "The princess has been seen."

Shloka 37 (sundara.57.37)

niṣasāda ca hastena gṛhītvā vālinaḥ sutam| ramaṇīye vanoddeśe mahendrasya girestadā || 57.37 ||

Then, taking the hand of Vali's son Angada, he sat down in a lovely wooded spot on Mount Mahendra.

Shloka 38 (sundara.57.38)

hanūmānabravīt pṛṣṭastadā tān vānararṣabhān| aśokavanikāsaṃsthā dṛṣṭā sā janakātmajā || 57.38 ||

Being questioned, Hanuman said to those foremost monkeys: "That daughter of Janaka was seen by me, dwelling in the Ashoka grove,"

Shloka 39 (sundara.57.39)

rakṣyamāṇā sughorābhī rākṣasībhiraninditā| ekaveṇīdharā bālā rāmadarśanalālasā || 57.39 ||

"— guarded by most terrible demonesses, that blameless one, a young woman wearing but a single braid, longing to see Rama,"

Shloka 40 (sundara.57.40)

upavāsapariśrāntā malinā jaṭilā kṛśā| tato dṛṣṭeti vacanaṃ mahārthamamṛtopamam || 57.40 ||

"— worn thin by fasting, soiled, her hair matted, emaciated." Then, on hearing that weighty word, "she has been seen," so like nectar,

Shloka 41 (sundara.57.41)

niśamya māruteḥ sarve muditā vānarābhavan| kṣveḍantyanye nadantyanye garjantyanye mahābalāḥ || 57.41 ||

— hearing it from the son of the Wind-god, all the monkeys became overjoyed. Some mighty ones hissed with delight, some cried out, others roared,

Shloka 42 (sundara.57.42)

cakruḥ kilakilāmanye pratigarjanti cāpare| keciducchritalāṅgūlāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ kapikuñjarāḥ || 57.42 ||

some made a joyous chatter, others roared back in reply; some elephant-like monkeys, overjoyed, holding their tails aloft,

Shloka 43 (sundara.57.43)

āyatāñcitadīrghāṇi lāṅgūlāni pravivyadhuḥ| apare tu hanūmantaṃ śrīmantaṃ vānarottamam || 57.43 ||

lashed about their long, curved, outstretched tails; while others, that glorious foremost of monkeys, Hanuman,

Shloka 44 (sundara.57.44)

āplutya giriśṛṅgeṣu saṃspṛśanti sma harṣitāḥ| uktavākyaṃ hanūmantamaṅgadastu tadābravīt || 57.44 ||

leaping about on the mountain-peaks, joyfully touched. Then Angada spoke these words to Hanuman, who had finished speaking,

Shloka 45 (sundara.57.45)

— in the midst of all the monkey-heroes, this most excellent speech: "O monkey, there is no one equal to you in strength and valor,"

Shloka 46 (sundara.57.46)

yadavaplutya vistīrṇaṃ sāgaraṃ punarāgataḥ| jīvitasya pradātā nastvameko vānarottama || 57.46 ||

"since, having leapt across the vast ocean and returned, you alone, O best of monkeys, are as it were the giver of life to us."

Shloka 47 (sundara.57.47)

tvatprasādāt sameṣyāmaḥ siddhārthā rāghaveṇa ha| aho svāmini te bhaktiraho vīryamaho dhṛtiḥ || 57.47 ||

"By your grace, our purpose accomplished, we shall be reunited with Raghava. Ah, such devotion to your lord! Ah, such valor! Ah, such fortitude!"

Shloka 48 (sundara.57.48)

diṣṭyā dṛṣṭā tvayā devī rāmapatnī yaśasvinī| diṣṭyā tyakṣyati kākutsthaḥ śokaṃ sītāviyogajam || 57.48 ||

"By good fortune, you have seen the illustrious princess, Rama's consort. By good fortune, Kakutstha shall now cast off the grief born of Sita's separation."

Shloka 49 (sundara.57.49)

tato'ṅgadaṃ hanūmantaṃ jāmbavantaṃ ca vānarāḥ| parivārya pramuditā bhejire vipulāḥ śilāḥ || 57.49 ||

Then the monkeys, overjoyed, gathering around Angada, Hanuman, and Jambavan, took their seats upon the broad rocks.

Shloka 50 (sundara.57.50)

upaviṣṭā girestasya śilāsu vipulāsu te| śrotukāmāḥ samudrasya laṅghanaṃ vānarottamāḥ || 57.50 ||

Those foremost of monkeys, seated on the broad rocks of that mountain, were eager to hear of the crossing of the ocean,

Shloka 51 (sundara.57.51)

darśanaṃ cāpi laṅkāyāḥ sītāyā rāvaṇasya ca| tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve hanūmadvadanonmukhāḥ || 57.51 ||

and of the sight of Lanka, of Sita, and of Ravana as well. All of them sat with joined palms, their faces turned expectantly toward Hanuman.

Shloka 52 (sundara.57.52)

tasthau tatrāṅgadaḥ śrīmān vānarairbahubhirvṛtaḥ| upāsyamāno vibudhairdivi devapatiryathā || 57.52 ||

There the glorious Angada sat, surrounded by many monkeys, attended upon, like the lord of the gods in heaven waited upon by the wise.

Shloka 53 (sundara.57.53)

hanūmatā kīrtimatā yaśasvinā tathāṅgadenāṅgadanaddhabāhunā| mudā tadādhyāsitamunnataṃ maha- nmahīdharāgraṃ jvalitaṃ śriyābhavat || 57.53 ||

With the famed and glorious Hanuman, and with prince Angada, his arms bound with armlets, seated there together in joy, that lofty, great mountain-peak blazed with splendor.
