Shloka 1 (sundara.60.1)

tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā vālisūnurabhāṣata| aśviputrau mahāvegau balavantau plavaṃgamau || 60.1 ||

Hearing those words of his, Vali's son Angada spoke: "The two sons of the Ashvins, of tremendous speed and strength, those two leaping monkeys,

Shloka 2 (sundara.60.2)

pitāmahavarotsekāt paramaṃ darpamāsthitau| aśvinormānanārthaṃ hi sarvalokapitāmahaḥ || 60.2 ||

"—filled with the utmost pride from the boon of their grandfather — for indeed, to honor the Ashvins, the grandfather of all worlds,

Shloka 3 (sundara.60.3)

sarvāvadhyatvamatulamanayordattavān purā| varotsekena mattau ca pramathya mahatīṃ camūm || 60.3 ||

"—long ago granted these two an unmatched inviolability against all. Intoxicated by the pride of that boon, having crushed a great army,

Shloka 4 (sundara.60.4)

surāṇāmamṛtaṃ vīrau pītavantau mahābalau| etāveva hi saṃkruddhau savājirathakuñjarām || 60.4 ||

"—these two mighty heroes drank the very nectar of the gods. These same two, when enraged, together with horses, chariots, and elephants,

Shloka 5 (sundara.60.5)

laṅkāṃ nāśayituṃ śaktau sarve tiṣṭhantu vānarāḥ| ahameko'pi paryāptaḥ sarākṣasagaṇāṃ purīm || 60.5 ||

"—are capable of destroying Lanka. Let all the other monkeys stand aside — I alone am sufficient for that city with its hosts of demons,

Shloka 6 (sundara.60.6)

tāṃ laṅkāṃ tarasā hantuṃ rāvaṇaṃ ca mahābalam| kiṃ punaḥ sahito vīrairbalavadbhiḥ kṛtātmabhiḥ || 60.6 ||

"—to swiftly destroy that Lanka and the mighty Ravana. How much more, then, when joined by heroes so strong and disciplined,

Shloka 7 (sundara.60.7)

kṛtāstraiḥ plavagaiḥ śaktairbhavadbhirvijayaiṣibhiḥ| vāyusūnorbalenaiva dagdhā laṅketi naḥ śrutam || 60.7 ||

"—weapon-skilled, capable monkeys such as you, seeking victory? We have heard that Lanka was burnt by the power of the Wind-god's son alone.

Shloka 8 (sundara.60.8)

dṛṣṭā devī na cānītā iti tatra niveditum| na yuktamiva paśyāmi bhavadbhiḥ khyātapauruṣaiḥ || 60.8 ||

"To go there and report merely, 'The princess has been seen, but not brought back' — this does not seem fitting to me, coming from you, of such renowned prowess.

Shloka 9 (sundara.60.9)

nahi vaḥ plavane kaścinnāpi kaścit parākrame| tulyaḥ sāmaradaityeṣu lokeṣu harisattamāḥ || 60.9 ||

"For, O foremost of monkeys, among the worlds of gods and demons, no one is equal to you either in leaping or in prowess.

Shloka 10 (sundara.60.10)

jitvā laṅkāṃ sarakṣaughāṃ hatvā taṃ rāvaṇaṃ raṇe| sītāmādāya gacchāmaḥ siddhārthā hṛṣṭamānasāḥ || 60.10 ||

"Having conquered Lanka with its hordes of demons, and slain that Ravana in battle, let us take Sita and go, our purpose fulfilled, our hearts rejoicing.

Shloka 11 (sundara.60.11)

teṣvevaṃ hatavīreṣu rākṣaseṣu hanūmatā| kimanyadatra kartavyaṃ gṛhītvā yāma jānakīm || 60.11 ||

"With those demon-heroes thus already slain by Hanuman, what else remains to be done here? Let us take Janaki and go.

Shloka 12 (sundara.60.12)

rāmalakṣmaṇayormadhye nyasyāma janakātmajām| kiṃ vyalīkaistu tān sarvān vānarān vānararṣabhān || 60.12 ||

"Let us place Janaka's daughter between Rama and Lakshmana. What need is there of falsehood before all those bull-like monkeys?

Shloka 13 (sundara.60.13)

vayameva hi gatvā tān hatvā rākṣasapuṅgavān| rāghavaṃ draṣṭumarhāmaḥ sugrīvaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam || 60.13 ||

"Let us ourselves go, having slain those foremost of demons, and be worthy to see Raghava, and Sugriva together with Lakshmana."

Shloka 14 (sundara.60.14)

tamevaṃ kṛtasaṃkalpaṃ jāmbavān harisattamaḥ| uvāca paramaprīto vākyamarthavadarthavit || 60.14 ||

To him, thus resolved, Jambavan, foremost among monkeys, greatly pleased, being himself wise in meaning, spoke this meaningful reply:

Shloka 15 (sundara.60.15)

naiṣā buddhirmahābuddhe yad bravīṣi mahākape| vicetuṃ vayamājñaptā dakṣiṇāṃ diśamuttamām || 60.15 ||

"This is not sound counsel, O great-minded, great monkey, that which you speak. We were commanded to search the excellent southern direction —

Shloka 16 (sundara.60.16)

nānetuṃ kapirājena naiva rāmeṇa dhīmatā| kathaṃcinnirjitāṃ sītāmasmābhirnābhirocayet || 60.16 ||

"—not to bring her back, neither by order of the monkey-king nor of the wise Rama. It would not please them if Sita, somehow forcibly overcome, were brought by us —

Shloka 17 (sundara.60.17)

rāghavo nṛpaśārdūlaḥ kulaṃ vyapadiśan svakam| pratijñāya svayaṃ rājā sītāvijayamagrataḥ || 60.17 ||

"—for Raghava, that tiger among kings, mindful of his own lineage, that king himself having vowed beforehand to win back Sita in person,

Shloka 18 (sundara.60.18)

sarveṣāṃ kapimukhyānāṃ kathaṃ mithyā kariṣyati| viphalaṃ karma ca kṛtaṃ bhavet tuṣṭirna tasya ca || 60.18 ||

"—how could he, before all the foremost monkeys, make that vow false? The deed would be rendered fruitless for him, and he would find no satisfaction in it,

Shloka 19 (sundara.60.19)

vṛthā ca darśitaṃ vīryaṃ bhaved vānarapuṅgavāḥ| tasmād gacchāma vai sarve yatra rāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ| sugrīvaśca mahātejāḥ kāryasyāsya nivedane || 60.19 ||

"—and his valor, once demonstrated, would seem to have been shown in vain, O foremost of monkeys. Therefore let us all go together, to where Rama is, with Lakshmana, and the greatly radiant Sugriva, to report this matter."

Shloka 20 (sundara.60.20)

na tāvadeṣā matirakṣamā no yathā bhavān paśyati rājaputra| yathā tu rāmasya matirniviṣṭā tathā bhavān paśyatu kāryasiddhim || 60.20 ||

"This counsel of yours, O prince, as you see it, is not one we are able to accept; but as Rama's own mind is set, so should you look to the accomplishment of this task."
