Shloka 1 (sundara.63.1)
tato mūrdhnā nipatitaṃ vānaraṃ vānararṣabhaḥ| dṛṣṭvaivodvignahṛdayo vākyametaduvāca ha || 63.1 ||
Just on seeing that monkey (Dadhimukha) fallen with his head to the ground, Sugriva, chief of monkeys, with an agitated heart, spoke these words.
Shloka 2 (sundara.63.2)
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha kasmāt tvaṃ pādayoḥ patito mama| abhayaṃ te pradāsyāmi satyamevābhidhīyatām || 63.2 ||
'Rise, rise! Why have you fallen at my feet? I grant you immunity from fear -- speak only the truth.'
Shloka 3 (sundara.63.3)
kiṃ sambhramāddhitaṃ kṛtsnaṃ brūhi yad vaktumarhasi| kaccinmadhuvane svasti śrotumicchāmi vānara || 63.3 ||
'Tell me quickly all that has happened, whatever needs to be said. Is all well in Madhuvana? I wish to hear it, monkey.'
Shloka 4 (sundara.63.4)
sa samāśvāsitastena sugrīveṇa mahātmanā| utthāya sa mahāprājño vākyaṃ dadhimukho'bravīt || 63.4 ||
Thus reassured by the great-souled Sugriva, that highly wise Dadhimukha, rising, spoke these words:
Shloka 5 (sundara.63.5)
'O king, never before -- not in Riksharaja's time, nor yours, nor even Vali's -- was this grove ever left unguarded; but it has now been destroyed by these monkeys.'
Shloka 6 (sundara.63.6)
nyavārayamahaṃ sarvān sahaibhirvanacāribhiḥ| acintayitvā māṃ hṛṣṭā bhakṣayanti pibanti ca || 63.6 ||
'I, together with these forest-guards, tried to restrain all these forest-roaming monkeys, but disregarding me, they went on eating and drinking, exultant.'
Shloka 7 (sundara.63.7)
ebhiḥ pradharṣaṇāyāṃ ca vāritaṃ vanapālakaiḥ| māmapyacintayan deva bhakṣayanti vanaukasaḥ || 63.7 ||
'Though restrained by these grove-guards in the attempt, O lord, the forest-dwellers, disregarding even me, went on feasting.'
Shloka 8 (sundara.63.8)
śiṣṭamatrāpavidhyanti bhakṣayanti tathāpare| nivāryamāṇāste sarve bhrukuṭiṃ darśayanti hi || 63.8 ||
'What remains they fling about, while others still consume it; when restrained, all of them knit their brows at us in anger.'
Shloka 9 (sundara.63.9)
ime hi saṃrabdhatarāstadā taiḥ sampradharṣitāḥ| nivāryante vanāt tasmāt kruddhairvānarapuṅgavaiḥ || 63.9 ||
'Thus provoked by us and restrained from the grove, those enraged bull-monkeys grew still more incensed and drove the guards off.'
Shloka 10 (sundara.63.10)
tatastairbahubhirvīrairvānarairvānararṣabhāḥ| saṃraktanayanaiḥ krodhāddharayaḥ sampradharṣitāḥ || 63.10 ||
'Then those many heroic monkeys, their eyes red with rage, O bull among monkeys, drove us guards away.'
Shloka 11 (sundara.63.11)
pāṇibhirnihatāḥ kecit kecijjānubhirāhatāḥ| prakṛṣṭāśca tadā kāmaṃ devamārgaṃ ca darśitāḥ || 63.11 ||
'Some were struck with their hands, some were injured with their knees; some were dragged about at will and made to see the road of the gods.'
Shloka 12 (sundara.63.12)
evamete hatāḥ śūrāstvayi tiṣṭhati bhartari| kṛtsnaṃ madhuvanaṃ caiva prakāmaṃ taiśca bhakṣyate || 63.12 ||
'Thus, my lord, even while you live, those valiant ones were struck down, and they now devour the entire Madhuvana at will.'
Shloka 13 (sundara.63.13)
evaṃ vijñāpyamānaṃ taṃ sugrīvaṃ vānararṣabham| apṛcchat taṃ mahāprājño lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā || 63.13 ||
While Sugriva, foremost of monkeys, was thus being informed, the highly wise Lakshmana, slayer of enemy heroes, asked him:
Shloka 14 (sundara.63.14)
kimayaṃ vānaro rājan vanapaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ| kiṃ cārthamabhinirdiśya duḥkhito vākyamabravīt || 63.14 ||
'O king, why has this grove-guarding monkey come here? Pointing to what matter has he, grieving, spoken these words?'
Shloka 15 (sundara.63.15)
evamuktastu sugrīvo lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā| lakṣmaṇaṃ pratyuvācedaṃ vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ || 63.15 ||
Thus questioned by the great-souled Lakshmana, Sugriva, skilled in speech, replied to Lakshmana with these words:
Shloka 16 (sundara.63.16)
ārya lakṣmaṇa samprāha vīro dadhimukhaḥ kapiḥ| aṅgadapramukhairvīrairbhakṣitaṃ madhu vānaraiḥ || 63.16 ||
'Noble Lakshmana, this heroic monkey Dadhimukha reports that the honey has been consumed by the monkeys led by the heroic Angada,'
Shloka 17 (sundara.63.17)
naiṣāmakṛtakāryāṇāmīdṛśaḥ syād vyatikramaḥ| vanaṃ yadabhipannāste sādhitaṃ karma tad dhruvam || 63.17 ||
'Such an act of overreach would never occur in those who had not accomplished their task; surely, in whatever grove they arrived, they have succeeded in their mission.'
Shloka 18 (sundara.63.18)
vārayanto bhṛśaṃ prāptāḥ pālā jānubhirāhatāḥ| tathā na gaṇitaścāyaṃ kapirdadhimukho balī || 63.18 ||
'The guards who arrived to restrain them were struck with knees despite it all; and even the mighty monkey Dadhimukha himself was not spared.'
Shloka 19 (sundara.63.19)
patirmama vanasyāyamasmābhiḥ sthāpitaḥ svayam| dṛṣṭā devī na saṃdeho na cānyena hanūmatā || 63.19 ||
'This is the lord of my grove, appointed by me myself. Without doubt, Sita has been found -- and by none other than Hanuman.'
Shloka 20 (sundara.63.20)
na hyanyaḥ sādhane hetuḥ karmaṇo'sya hanūmataḥ| kāryasiddhirhanumati matiśca haripuṅgave || 63.20 ||
'For there is no cause of accomplishing this task other than Hanuman; in Hanuman alone is established both the intelligence for success and the excellence of a bull among monkeys.'
Shloka 21 (sundara.63.21)
vyavasāyaśca vīryaṃ ca śrutaṃ cāpi pratiṣṭhitam| jāmbavān yatra netā syādaṅgadaśca mahābalaḥ || 63.21 ||
'Where effort, valour, and learning too stand firmly established, and where Jambavan is the leader and mighty Angada is present,'
Shloka 22 (sundara.63.22)
hanūmāṃścāpyadhiṣṭhātā na tatra gatiranyathā| aṅgadapramukhairvīrairhataṃ madhuvanaṃ kila || 63.22 ||
'and where Hanuman presides, that undertaking cannot but succeed. It is further reported that the Madhuvana has been ravaged by the heroes led by Angada.'
Shloka 23 (sundara.63.23)
vicitya dakṣiṇāmāśāmāgatairharipuṅgavaiḥ| āgataiścāpradhṛṣyaṃ taddhataṃ madhuvanaṃ hi taiḥ || 63.23 ||
'Those bull-monkeys, having searched the southern quarter and now returned, have so acted that Madhuvana, thought unassailable, was ravaged the moment they arrived.'
Shloka 24 (sundara.63.24)
dharṣitaṃ ca vanaṃ kṛtsnamupayuktaṃ tu vānaraiḥ| pātitā vanapālāste tadā jānubhirāhatāḥ || 63.24 ||
'The whole grove was ravaged and consumed by those monkeys; the grove-guards were felled and struck with knees.'
Shloka 25 (sundara.63.25)
etadarthamayaṃ prāpto vaktuṃ madhuravāgiha| nāmnā dadhimukho nāma hariḥ prakhyātavikramaḥ || 63.25 ||
'To tell of just this matter has this sweet-spoken monkey, named Dadhimukha, of renowned prowess, come here.'
Shloka 26 (sundara.63.26)
dṛṣṭā sītā mahābāho saumitre paśya tattvataḥ| abhigamya yathā sarve pibanti madhu vānarāḥ || 63.26 ||
'Know for certain, O mighty-armed son of Sumitra, that Sita has indeed been seen -- for all the monkeys, having succeeded, are drinking honey together.'
Shloka 27 (sundara.63.27)
na cāpyadṛṣṭvā vaidehīṃ viśrutāḥ puruṣarṣabha| vanaṃ dattavaraṃ divyaṃ dharṣayeyurvanaukasaḥ || 63.27 ||
'For, O bull among men, without having seen Vaidehi those renowned monkeys would never have dared to violate that divine grove which was granted as a boon.'
Shloka 28 (sundara.63.28)
tataḥ prahṛṣṭo dharmātmā lakṣmaṇaḥ saharāghavaḥ| śrutvā karṇasukhāṃ vāṇīṃ sugrīvavadanāccyutām || 63.28 ||
Then, hearing that speech, pleasant to the ear, falling from Sugriva's lips, the righteous Lakshmana, together with Raghava, was greatly delighted,
Shloka 29 (sundara.63.29)
prāhṛṣyata bhṛśaṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇaśca mahāyaśāḥ| śrutvā dadhimukhasyaivaṃ sugrīvastu prahṛṣya ca || 63.29 ||
and Rama of great renown, and Lakshmana too, rejoiced exceedingly. Hearing this word of Dadhimukha, Sugriva likewise was greatly pleased,
Shloka 30 (sundara.63.30)
vanapālaṃ punarvākyaṃ sugrīvaḥ pratyabhāṣata| prīto'smi so'haṃ yadbhuktaṃ vanaṃ taiḥ kṛtakarmabhiḥ || 63.30 ||
and spoke again to the grove-keeper Dadhimukha these words: 'I am pleased that those monkeys, their task accomplished, have enjoyed that grove.'
Shloka 31 (sundara.63.31)
dharṣitaṃ marṣaṇīyaṃ ca ceṣṭitaṃ kṛtakarmaṇām| gaccha śīghraṃ madhuvanaṃ saṃrakṣasva tvameva hi| śīghraṃ preṣaya sarvāṃstān hanūmatpramukhān kapīn || 63.31 ||
'What was done and violated by those who have accomplished their task is forgivable, indeed to be forgiven. Go quickly yourself and guard Madhuvana, and swiftly send here all those monkeys headed by Hanuman.'
Shloka 32 (sundara.63.32)
icchāmi śīghraṃ hanumatpradhānānśākhāmṛgāṃstān mṛgarājadarpān| praṣṭuṃ kṛtārthān saha rāghavābhyāṃ śrotuṃ ca sītādhigame prayatnam || 63.32 ||
'I wish quickly, together with the two Raghavas, to see those foremost tree-dwellers, proud as lions among beasts, their task accomplished, and to hear of their effort in finding Sita.'
Shloka 33 (sundara.63.33)
prītisphītākṣau samprahṛṣṭau kumārau dṛṣṭvā siddhārthau vānarāṇāṃ ca rājā| aṅgaiḥ prahṛṣṭaiḥ kāryasiddhiṃ viditvā bāhvorāsannāmatimātraṃ nananda || 63.33 ||
Seeing the two princes, their eyes wide with joy, exceedingly delighted at the success of the task, and knowing from his own thrilled limbs that the task was accomplished, the monkey-king Sugriva rejoiced beyond measure, his very arms trembling with delight.
