Rama Weeps Over the Jewel

Shloka 1 (sundara.66.1)

एवमुक्तो हनुमता रामो दशरथात्मजः। तं मणिं हृदये कृत्वा रुरोद सहलक्ष्मणः ॥ 66.1 ॥

evamukto hanumatā rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ| taṃ maṇiṃ hṛdaye kṛtvā ruroda sahalakṣmaṇaḥ || 66.1 ||

Thus addressed by Hanuman, Rama the son of Dasaratha, pressing that jewel to his heart, wept together with Lakshmana.

Shloka 2 (sundara.66.2)

तं तु दृष्ट्वा मणिश्रेष्ठं राघवः शोककर्शितः। नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत् ॥ 66.2 ॥

taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā maṇiśreṣṭhaṃ rāghavaḥ śokakarśitaḥ| netrābhyāmaśrupūrṇābhyāṃ sugrīvamidamabravīt || 66.2 ||

Seeing that excellent jewel, Raghava, wasted with grief, his eyes brimming with tears, spoke these words to Sugriva:

Shloka 3 (sundara.66.3)

यथैव धेनुः स्रवति स्नेहाद् वत्सस्य वत्सला। तथा ममापि हृदयं मणिश्रेष्ठस्य दर्शनात् ॥ 66.3 ॥

yathaiva dhenuḥ sravati snehād vatsasya vatsalā| tathā mamāpi hṛdayaṃ maṇiśreṣṭhasya darśanāt || 66.3 ||

"Just as an affectionate cow's udder streams with milk out of love at the sight of her calf, so too does my heart melt at the sight of this excellent jewel."

Shloka 4 (sundara.66.4)

मणिरत्नमिदं दत्तं वैदेह्याः श्वशुरेण मे। वधूकाले यथा बद्धमधिकं मूर्ध्नि शोभते ॥ 66.4 ॥

maṇiratnamidaṃ dattaṃ vaidehyāḥ śvaśureṇa me| vadhūkāle yathā baddhamadhikaṃ mūrdhni śobhate || 66.4 ||

"This jewel was given to Vaidehi by my father-in-law; when she became a bride it was fastened on her head, where it shone all the more beautifully."

Shloka 5 (sundara.66.5)

अयं हि जलसम्भूतो मणिः प्रवरपूजितः। यज्ञे परमतुष्टेन दत्तः शक्रेण धीमता ॥ 66.5 ॥

ayaṃ hi jalasambhūto maṇiḥ pravarapūjitaḥ| yajñe paramatuṣṭena dattaḥ śakreṇa dhīmatā || 66.5 ||

"This jewel, born in the waters and greatly honoured, was given by the wise Indra, who was highly pleased, at a sacrifice."

Shloka 6 (sundara.66.6)

इमं दृष्ट्वा मणिश्रेष्ठं तथा तातस्य दर्शनम्। अद्यास्म्यवगतः सौम्य वैदेहस्य तथा विभोः ॥ 66.6 ॥

imaṃ dṛṣṭvā maṇiśreṣṭhaṃ tathā tātasya darśanam| adyāsmyavagataḥ saumya vaidehasya tathā vibhoḥ || 66.6 ||

"Seeing this excellent jewel now, gentle Sugriva, I feel as though I have gained the sight of my father, and likewise of the mighty lord of Videha."

Shloka 7 (sundara.66.7)

अयं हि शोभते तस्याः प्रियाया मूर्ध्नि मे मणिः। अद्यास्य दर्शनेनाहं प्राप्तां तामिव चिन्तये ॥ 66.7 ॥

ayaṃ hi śobhate tasyāḥ priyāyā mūrdhni me maṇiḥ| adyāsya darśanenāhaṃ prāptāṃ tāmiva cintaye || 66.7 ||

"This jewel used to shine on the head of my beloved; seeing it today, I feel as if I have obtained her herself."

Shloka 8 (sundara.66.8)

किमाह सीता वैदेही ब्रूहि सौम्य पुनः पुनः। परासुमिव तोयेन सिञ्चन्ती वाक्यवारिणा ॥ 66.8 ॥

kimāha sītā vaidehī brūhi saumya punaḥ punaḥ| parāsumiva toyena siñcantī vākyavāriṇā || 66.8 ||

"Tell me again and again, gentle Hanuman, what Sita the daughter of Videha said, sprinkling me with the water of her words as one revives a dying man with water."

Shloka 9 (sundara.66.9)

इतस्तु किं दुःखतरं यदिमं वारिसम्भवम्। मणिं पश्यामि सौमित्रे वैदेहीमागतां विना ॥ 66.9 ॥

itastu kiṃ duḥkhataraṃ yadimaṃ vārisambhavam| maṇiṃ paśyāmi saumitre vaidehīmāgatāṃ vinā || 66.9 ||

"O son of Sumitra, what could be more painful than this — that I see this jewel born of the waters, yet Vaidehi herself has not come?"

Shloka 10 (sundara.66.10)

चिरं जीवति वैदेही यदि मासं धरिष्यति। क्षणं वीर न जीवेयं विना तामसितेक्षणाम् ॥ 66.10 ॥

ciraṃ jīvati vaidehī yadi māsaṃ dhariṣyati| kṣaṇaṃ vīra na jīveyaṃ vinā tāmasitekṣaṇām || 66.10 ||

"O hero, if Vaidehi can hold on to life for a month, that itself would mean she has lived long; but I, without that dark-eyed one, could not live even for a moment."

Shloka 11 (sundara.66.11)

नय मामपि तं देशं यत्र दृष्टा मम प्रिया। न तिष्ठेयं क्षणमपि प्रवृत्तिमुपलभ्य च ॥ 66.11 ॥

naya māmapi taṃ deśaṃ yatra dṛṣṭā mama priyā| na tiṣṭheyaṃ kṣaṇamapi pravṛttimupalabhya ca || 66.11 ||

"Take me too to that place where my beloved was seen; now that I have news of her, I cannot stay still even for a moment."

Shloka 12 (sundara.66.12)

कथं सा मम सुश्रोणी भीरुभीरुः सती तदा। भयावहानां घोराणां मध्ये तिष्ठति रक्षसाम् ॥ 66.12 ॥

kathaṃ sā mama suśroṇī bhīrubhīruḥ satī tadā| bhayāvahānāṃ ghorāṇāṃ madhye tiṣṭhati rakṣasām || 66.12 ||

"How does she, my lovely and virtuous wife, so very timid by nature, endure staying there among those terrifying, dreadful demons?"

Shloka 13 (sundara.66.13)

शारदस्तिमिरोन्मुक्तो नूनं चन्द्र इवाम्बुदैः। आवृतो वदनं तस्या न विराजति साम्प्रतम् ॥ 66.13 ॥

śāradastimironmukto nūnaṃ candra ivāmbudaiḥ| āvṛto vadanaṃ tasyā na virājati sāmpratam || 66.13 ||

"Surely her face, like an autumn moon freed of darkness yet veiled by clouds, does not shine at present."

Shloka 14 (sundara.66.14)

किमाह सीता हनुमंस्तत्त्वतः कथयस्व मे। एतेन खलु जीविष्ये भेषजेनातुरो यथा ॥ 66.14 ॥

kimāha sītā hanumaṃstattvataḥ kathayasva me| etena khalu jīviṣye bheṣajenāturo yathā || 66.14 ||

"O Hanuman, tell me truly what Sita said. By hearing it I shall surely live, as a sick man revives through medicine."

Shloka 15 (sundara.66.15)

मधुरा मधुरालापा किमाह मम भामिनी। मद्विहीना वरारोहा हनुमन् कथयस्व मे ॥ 66.15 ॥

madhurā madhurālāpā kimāha mama bhāminī| madvihīnā varārohā hanuman kathayasva me || 66.15 ||

"O Hanuman, tell me — what did my sweet-natured, sweet-speaking, lovely consort, separated from me, say?"
