Kingdoms for Lakshmana's Sons
Shloka 1 (uttara.102.1)
तच्छ्रुत्वा हर्षमापेदे राघवो भ्रातृभिः सह । वाक्यं चाद्भुतसङ्काशं तदा प्रोवाच लक्ष्मणम् ।। ७.१०२.१ ।।
tacchrutvā harṣamāpede rāghavo bhrātṛbhiḥ saha | vākyaṃ cādbhutasaṅkāśaṃ tadā provāca lakṣmaṇam || 7.102.1 ||
Hearing this, Raghava, together with his brothers, was filled with joy, and then spoke these words, wondrous in import, to Lakshmana.
Shloka 2 (uttara.102.2)
इमौ कुमारौ सौमित्रे तव धर्मविशारदौ । अङ्गदश्चन्द्रकेतुश्च राज्यार्थे दृढविक्रमौ ।। ७.१०२.२ ।।
imau kumārau saumitre tava dharmaviśāradau | aṅgadaścandraketuśca rājyārthe dṛḍhavikramau || 7.102.2 ||
"These two princes of yours, Saumitri -- Angada and Chandraketu -- are skilled in righteousness and firm in valor, fit to rule a kingdom."
Shloka 3 (uttara.102.3)
इमौ राज्ये ऽभिषेक्ष्यामि देशः साधु विधीयताम् । रमणीयो ह्यसम्बाधो रमेतां यत्र धन्विनौ ।। ७.१०२.३ ।।
imau rājye 'bhiṣekṣyāmi deśaḥ sādhu vidhīyatām | ramaṇīyo hyasambādho rametāṃ yatra dhanvinau || 7.102.3 ||
"I shall consecrate these two to kingship; let a suitable country be chosen, delightful and unobstructed, where these two bowmen may dwell happily."
Shloka 4 (uttara.102.4)
न राज्ञो यत्र पीडा स्यान्नाश्रमाणां विनाशनम् । स देशो दृश्यतां सौम्य नापराध्यामहे यथा ।। ७.१०२.४ ।।
na rājño yatra pīḍā syānnāśramāṇāṃ vināśanam | sa deśo dṛśyatāṃ saumya nāparādhyāmahe yathā || 7.102.4 ||
"Let that land be found, gentle one, where no harm shall befall the king and no hermitages be destroyed, so that we commit no wrong."
Shloka 5 (uttara.102.5)
तथोक्तवति रामे तु भरतः प्रत्युवाच ह । अयं कारुपथो देशो रमणीयो निरामयः ।। ७.१०२.५ ।।
tathoktavati rāme tu bharataḥ pratyuvāca ha | ayaṃ kārupatho deśo ramaṇīyo nirāmayaḥ || 7.102.5 ||
When Rama had spoken thus, Bharata replied: "This land called Karupatha is delightful and free of affliction."
Shloka 6 (uttara.102.6)
निवेश्यतां तत्र पुरमङ्गदस्य महात्मनः । चन्द्रकेतोः सुरुचिरं चन्द्रकान्तं निरामयम् ।। ७.१०२.६ ।।
niveśyatāṃ tatra puramaṅgadasya mahātmanaḥ | candraketoḥ suruciraṃ candrakāntaṃ nirāmayam || 7.102.6 ||
"There let a city be founded for great-souled Angada, and a lovely and untroubled Chandrakanta for Chandraketu."
Shloka 7 (uttara.102.7)
तद्वाक्यं भरतेनोक्तं प्रतिजग्राह राघवः । तं च कृत्वा वशे देशमङ्गदस्य न्यवेशयत् ।। ७.१०२.७ ।।
tadvākyaṃ bharatenoktaṃ pratijagrāha rāghavaḥ | taṃ ca kṛtvā vaśe deśamaṅgadasya nyaveśayat || 7.102.7 ||
Raghava accepted these words spoken by Bharata, and, having brought that land under control, settled Angada there.
Shloka 8 (uttara.102.8)
अङ्गदीया पुरी रम्याप्यङ्गदस्य निवेशिता । रमणीया सुगुप्ता च रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।। ७.१०२.८ ।।
aṅgadīyā purī ramyāpyaṅgadasya niveśitā | ramaṇīyā suguptā ca rāmeṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā || 7.102.8 ||
The delightful city of Angadiya was founded for Angada, lovely and well-guarded, by Rama of unwearied deeds.
Shloka 9 (uttara.102.9)
चन्द्रकेतोश्च मल्लस्य मल्लभूम्यां निवेशिता । चन्द्रकान्तेति विख्याता दिव्या स्वर्गपुरी यथा ।। ७.१०२.९ ।।
candraketośca mallasya mallabhūmyāṃ niveśitā | candrakānteti vikhyātā divyā svargapurī yathā || 7.102.9 ||
For Chandraketu, the wrestler-hero, a city was founded in the land of Malla, famed as Chandrakanta, resplendent as a heavenly city.
Shloka 10 (uttara.102.10)
ततो रामः परां प्रीतिं लक्ष्मणो भरतस्तथा । ययुर्युद्धे दुराधर्षा अभिषेकं च चक्रिरे ।। ७.१०२.१० ।।
tato rāmaḥ parāṃ prītiṃ lakṣmaṇo bharatastathā | yayuryuddhe durādharṣā abhiṣekaṃ ca cakrire || 7.102.10 ||
Then Rama, Lakshmana, and Bharata, unassailable in battle, felt supreme delight and performed the consecration of the two princes.
Shloka 11 (uttara.102.11)
अभिषिच्य कुमारौ स प्रस्थापयति राघवः । अङ्गदं पश्चिमां भूमिं चन्द्रकेतुमुदङ्मुखम् ।। ७.१०२.११ ।।
abhiṣicya kumārau sa prasthāpayati rāghavaḥ | aṅgadaṃ paścimāṃ bhūmiṃ candraketumudaṅmukham || 7.102.11 ||
Having consecrated the two princes, Raghava sent them forth -- Angada to the western land, and Chandraketu toward the north.
Shloka 12 (uttara.102.12)
अङ्गदं चापि सौमित्रिर्लक्ष्मणो ऽनुजगाम ह । चन्द्रकेतोस्तु भरतः पार्ष्णिग्राहो बभूव ह ।। ७.१०२.१२ ।।
aṅgadaṃ cāpi saumitrirlakṣmaṇo 'nujagāma ha | candraketostu bharataḥ pārṣṇigrāho babhūva ha || 7.102.12 ||
And Saumitri Lakshmana accompanied Angada, while Bharata became the rear-guard for Chandraketu.
Shloka 13 (uttara.102.13)
लक्ष्मणस्त्वङ्गदीयायां संवत्सरमथोषितः । पुत्रे स्थिते दुराधर्षे अयोध्यां पुनरागमत् ।। ७.१०२.१३ ।।
lakṣmaṇastvaṅgadīyāyāṃ saṃvatsaramathoṣitaḥ | putre sthite durādharṣe ayodhyāṃ punarāgamat || 7.102.13 ||
Lakshmana remained a year in Angadiya, and when his unassailable son was firmly established, he returned again to Ayodhya.
Shloka 14 (uttara.102.14)
भरतो ऽपि तथैवोष्य संवत्सरमतो ऽधिकम् । अयोध्यां पुनरागम्य रामपादावुपास्त सः ।। ७.१०२.१४ ।।
bharato 'pi tathaivoṣya saṃvatsaramato 'dhikam | ayodhyāṃ punarāgamya rāmapādāvupāsta saḥ || 7.102.14 ||
Bharata likewise stayed there a little more than a year, and, returning again to Ayodhya, he devoted himself to serving Rama's feet.
Shloka 15 (uttara.102.15)
उभौ सौमित्रिभरतौ रामपादावनुव्रतौ । कालं गतमपि स्नेहान्न जज्ञाते ऽतिधार्मिकौ ।। ७.१०२.१५ ।।
ubhau saumitribharatau rāmapādāvanuvratau | kālaṃ gatamapi snehānna jajñāte 'tidhārmikau || 7.102.15 ||
Both Lakshmana and Bharata, ever devoted to Rama's feet and deeply righteous, did not even notice the passing of time, so great was their love.
Shloka 16 (uttara.102.16)
एवं वर्षसहस्राणि दश तेषां ययुस्तदा । धर्मे प्रयतमानानां पौरकार्येषु नित्यदा ।। ७.१०२.१६ ।।
evaṃ varṣasahasrāṇi daśa teṣāṃ yayustadā | dharme prayatamānānāṃ paurakāryeṣu nityadā || 7.102.16 ||
Thus ten thousand years passed for them, ever striving in righteousness and constantly engaged in the affairs of the citizens.
Shloka 17 (uttara.102.17)
विहृत्य कालं परिपूर्णमानसाः श्रिया वृता धर्मपुरे सुसंस्थिताः । त्रयः समिद्धा इव दीप्ततेजसो महाध्वरे साधु हुतास्त्रयो ऽग्नयः ।। ७.१०२.१७ ।।
vihṛtya kālaṃ paripūrṇamānasāḥ śriyā vṛtā dharmapure susaṃsthitāḥ | trayaḥ samiddhā iva dīptatejaso mahādhvare sādhu hutāstrayo 'gnayaḥ || 7.102.17 ||
Having spent their time with fulfilled hearts, surrounded by splendor, firmly established in the city of righteousness, the three of them shone like three blazing sacred fires, well offered into a great sacrifice, radiant with fiery brilliance.
