Uttara Kanda · Sarga 16
The Shaking of Kailasa
Shloka 1 (uttara.16.1)
sa jitvā dhanadaṃ rāma bhrātaraṃ rākṣasādhipaḥ | mahāsenaprasūtiṃ tadyayau śaravaṇaṃ mahat || 16.1 ||
Having conquered his brother Dhanada (Kubera), O Rama, that lord of rakshasas then journeyed to the great Sharavana, the reed-thicket birthplace of Mahasena (Kartikeya).
Shloka 2 (uttara.16.2)
athāpaśyadṛśagrīvo raukmaṃ śaravaṇaṃ mahat | gabhastijālasaṃvītaṃ dvitīyamiva bhāskaram || 16.2 ||
Then ten-necked Ravana saw that great golden Sharavana, wrapped in a web of rays, like a second sun.
Shloka 3 (uttara.16.3)
sa parvataṃ samāruhya kañcidramyavanāntaram | apaśyat puṣpakaṃ tatra rāmaviṣṭambhitaṃ tadā || 16.3 ||
Climbing a certain mountain amid a lovely forest, he then saw his Pushpaka chariot standing there, halted and motionless.
Shloka 4 (uttara.16.4)
viṣṭabdhaṃ puṣpakaṃ dṛṣṭvā hyagamaṃ kāmāgaṃ kṛtam | acintayadrākṣasendraḥ sacivaistaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ || 16.4 ||
Seeing the Pushpaka -- which moved at mere will -- thus stalled, the lord of rakshasas, surrounded by his ministers, fell to thinking.
Shloka 5 (uttara.16.5)
kinnimittaṃ cecchayā me nedaṃ gacchati puṣpakam | parvatasyopariṣṭhasya karmedaṃ kasyacidbhavet || 16.5 ||
"For what reason does this Pushpaka not move at my will? This must be the doing of someone dwelling atop this mountain."
Shloka 6 (uttara.16.6)
tato 'bravīttadā rāma mārīco buddhikovidaḥ | nedaṃ niṣkāraṇaṃ rājanpuṣpakaṃ yanna gacchati || 16.6 ||
Then, O Rama, wise Maricha spoke: "O king, it is not without cause that this Pushpaka fails to move."
Shloka 7 (uttara.16.7)
athavā puṣpakamidaṃ dhanadānnānyavāhanam | ato niṣpandamabhavaddhanādhyakṣavinākṛtam || 16.7 ||
"Or perhaps this Pushpaka has no rightful master but Dhanada -- and so, deprived of its true lord, it has become motionless."
Shloka 8 (uttara.16.8)
iti vākyāntare tasya karālaḥ kṛṣṇapiṅgalaḥ | vāmano vikaṭo muṇḍī nandī prahvabhujo balī || 16.8 ||
Even as he was speaking thus, one terrible in form, dark-tawny of hue, dwarfish, misshapen, bald-headed, with bent mighty arms, and powerful --
Shloka 9 (uttara.16.9)
tataḥ pārśvamupāgamya bhavasyānucaro 'bravīt | nandīśvaro vacaścedaṃ rākṣasendramaśaṅkitaḥ || 16.9 ||
Nandi, the attendant of Shiva, approaching his side, spoke these words to the lord of rakshasas, quite unafraid.
Shloka 10 (uttara.16.10)
nivartasva daśagrīva śaile krīḍati śaṅkaraḥ | suparṇanāgayakṣāṇāṃ devagandharvarakṣasām || 16.10 ||
"Turn back, O Dashagriva! Shankara is at play upon this mountain. To suparnas, nagas, yakshas, gods, gandharvas, and rakshasas alike --"
Shloka 11 (uttara.16.11)
sarveṣāmeva bhūtānāmagamyaḥ parvataḥ kṛtaḥ | iti nandivacaḥ śrutvā krodhātkampitakuṇḍalaḥ || 16.11 ||
"-- to all these beings this mountain has been made inaccessible." Hearing Nandi's words, his very earrings trembled with fury.
Shloka 12 (uttara.16.12)
roṣāttu tāmranayanaḥ puṣpakādavaruhya saḥ | ko 'yaṃ śaṅkara ityuktvā śailamūlamupāgataḥ || 16.12 ||
His eyes reddened with rage, he descended from the Pushpaka; saying "Who is this Shankara?", he made his way to the foot of the mountain.
Shloka 13 (uttara.16.13)
so 'paśyannandinaṃ tatra devasyādūrataḥ sthitam | dīptaṃ śūlamavaṣṭabhya dvitīyamiva śaṅkaram || 16.13 ||
There he saw Nandin standing not far from the god, gripping a blazing trident, like a second Shankara.
Shloka 14 (uttara.16.14)
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vānaramukhamavajñāya sa rākṣasaḥ | prahāsaṃ mumuce tatra satoya iva toyadaḥ || 16.14 ||
Seeing his monkey face, and scorning him, that rakshasa there burst into peals of laughter, like a water-laden cloud thundering.
Shloka 15 (uttara.16.15)
taṃ kruddho bhagavānnandī śaṅkarasyāparā tanuḥ | abravīttatra tadrakṣo daśānanamupasthitam || 16.15 ||
Enraged at this, the lord Nandi -- who is himself another form of Shankara -- said there to that ten-faced rakshasa standing before him:
Shloka 16 (uttara.16.16)
yasmādvānararūpaṃ māmavajñāya daśānana | aśanīpātasaṅkāśamapahāsaṃ pramuktavān || 16.16 ||
"Since, O Dashanana, in scorning my monkey form, you have let loose this laughter like the crash of a thunderbolt,"
Shloka 17 (uttara.16.17)
tasmānmadrūpasampannā madvīryasamatejasaḥ | utpatsyanti vadhārthaṃ hi kulasya tava vānarāḥ || 16.17 ||
"therefore, for the destruction of your race, there shall be born vanaras bearing my very form, equal to my valour and splendour --"
Shloka 18 (uttara.16.18)
nakhadaṃṣṭrāyudhāḥ krūrā manaḥsampātaraṃhasaḥ | yuddhonmattā balodriktāḥ śailā iva visarpiṇaḥ || 16.18 ||
"-- fierce ones armed with claws and fangs, swift as thought, maddened in battle, overflowing with strength, like moving mountains."
Shloka 19 (uttara.16.19)
te tava prabalaṃ darpamutsedhaṃ ca pṛthagvidham | vyapaneṣyanti sambhūya sahāmātyasutasya ca || 16.19 ||
"They, joining together, shall strip away your mighty pride and every kind of arrogance -- yours, and that of your ministers and your son."
Shloka 20 (uttara.16.20)
kiṃ tvidānīṃ mayā śakyaṃ hantuṃ tvāṃ he niśācara | na hantavyo hatastvaṃ hi pūrvameva svakarmabhiḥ || 16.20 ||
"But what use is it now for me to slay you, O night-wanderer? There is no need to slay you -- you are already slain by your own deeds."
Shloka 21 (uttara.16.21)
ityudīritavākye tu deve tasminmahātmani | devadundubhayo neduḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiśca khāccyutā || 16.21 ||
As soon as that great-souled god had spoken these words, the drums of the gods resounded, and a shower of flowers fell from the sky.
Shloka 22 (uttara.16.22)
acintayitvā sa tadā nandivākyaṃ mahābalaḥ | parvataṃ tu samāsādya vākyamāha daśānanaḥ || 16.22 ||
Then that mighty Dashanana, paying no heed to Nandi's words, went up to the mountain and spoke these words:
Shloka 23 (uttara.16.23)
puṣpakasya gatiśchinnā yatkṛte mama gacchataḥ | tamimaṃ śailamunmūlaṃ karomi tava gopate || 16.23 ||
"O guardian, because of whom the passage of my Pushpaka, as I travelled, has been cut off -- I shall now uproot this very mountain!"
Shloka 24 (uttara.16.24)
kena prabhāveṇa bhavo nityaṃ krīḍati rājavat | vijñātavyaṃ na jānīte bhayasthānamupasthitam || 16.24 ||
"By what power does Bhava forever sport here like a king? What ought to be known, he does not know -- that a cause of terror has now arrived."
Shloka 25 (uttara.16.25)
Having said this, O Rama, he thrust his arms beneath the mountain and swiftly began to lift it; the mountain shook.
Shloka 26 (uttara.16.26)
cālanātparvatasyaiva gaṇā devasya kampitāḥ | cacāla pārvatī cāpi tadā ' 'śliṣṭā maheśvaram || 16.26 ||
By the shaking of the mountain, the god's own hosts were shaken; and Parvati too, clinging close to Maheshvara, trembled.
Shloka 27 (uttara.16.27)
tato rāma mahādavo devānāṃ pravaro haraḥ | pādāṅguṣṭhena taṃ śailaṃ pīḍayāmāsa līlayā || 16.27 ||
Then, O Rama, Mahadeva Hara, the foremost of gods, pressed down upon that mountain with merely the toe of his foot, in mere sport.
Shloka 28 (uttara.16.28)
pīḍitāstu tatastasya śailasyādhogatā bhujāḥ | vismitāścābhavaṃstatra sacivāstasya rakṣasaḥ || 16.28 ||
His arms, thus crushed, were pinned beneath the mountain; and his ministers, seeing this, were struck with astonishment.
Shloka 29 (uttara.16.29)
rakṣasā tena roṣācca bhujānāṃ pīḍanāttadā | mukto virāvaḥ sahasā trailokyaṃ yena kampitam || 16.29 ||
From that rakshasa, in fury and from the crushing of his arms, there suddenly burst forth a roar so terrible that the three worlds were shaken.
Shloka 30 (uttara.16.30)
menire vajraniṣpeṣaṃ tasyāmātyā yugakṣaye | tadā vartmasthacalitā devā indrapurogamāḥ || 16.30 ||
His ministers took it for the grinding roar of thunderbolts at the dissolution of the age; the gods, led by Indra, wavered on their very paths.
Shloka 31 (uttara.16.31)
samudrāścāpi saṅkṣubdhāścalitāścāpi parvatāḥ | yakṣā vidyādharāḥ siddhāḥ kimetaditi cābruvan || 16.31 ||
The oceans too were churned, the mountains too shook; yakshas, vidyadharas, and siddhas cried out, "What has happened?"
Shloka 32 (uttara.16.32)
atha te mantriṇastasya vikrośantamathābruvan | toṣayasva mahādevaṃ nīlakaṇṭhamumāpatim || 16.32 ||
Then his ministers said to him, as he cried out, "Appease Mahadeva, the blue-throated lord of Uma."
Shloka 33 (uttara.16.33)
tamṛte śaraṇaṃ nānyaṃ paśyāmo 'tra daśānana | stutibhiḥ praṇato bhūtvā tameva śaraṇaṃ vraja || 16.33 ||
"Other than him, O Dashanana, we see no refuge here; bow low with hymns of praise and take shelter in him alone."
Shloka 34 (uttara.16.34)
kṛpāluḥ śaṅkarastuṣṭaḥ prasādaṃ te vidhāsyati | evamuktastadāmātyaistuṣṭāva vṛṣabhadhvajam || 16.34 ||
"Compassionate Shankara, once pleased, will grant you his grace." Thus addressed by his ministers, he praised the bull-bannered Shiva.
Shloka 35 (uttara.16.35)
sāmabhirvividhaiḥ stotraiḥ praṇamya sa daśānanaḥ | saṃvatsarasahasraṃ tu rudato rakṣaso gatam || 16.35 ||
Dashanana bowed and praised him with various Saman hymns; a thousand years passed for that weeping rakshasa in this way.
Shloka 36 (uttara.16.36)
tataḥ prīto mahādevaḥ śailāgre viṣṭhitaḥ prabhuḥ | muktvā cāsya bhujānrāma prāha vākyaṃ daśānanam || 16.36 ||
Then, O Rama, Mahadeva, pleased and standing on the mountain's peak, released his arms and spoke this word to Dashanana:
Shloka 37 (uttara.16.37)
prīto 'smi tava vīryasya śauṇḍāryācca daśānana | śailākrāntena yo muktastvayā rāvaḥ sudāruṇaḥ || 16.37 ||
"I am pleased, O Dashanana, with your valour and your daring -- and with that terrible roar which you, pinned beneath the mountain, let loose."
Shloka 38 (uttara.16.38)
yasmāllokatrayaṃ caitadrāvitaṃ bhayamāgatam | tasmāttvaṃ rāvaṇo nāma nāmnā rājanbhaviṣyasi || 16.38 ||
"Since by that roar these three worlds were made to cry out in terror, therefore, O king, you shall be known by the name Ravana."
Shloka 39 (uttara.16.39)
devatā mānuṣā yakṣā ye cānye jagatītale | evaṃ tvāmabhidhāsyanti rāvaṇaṃ lokarāvaṇam || 16.39 ||
"Gods, men, yakshas, and all others upon the earth shall thus address you as Ravana -- 'he who makes the worlds cry out.'"
Shloka 40 (uttara.16.40)
gaccha paulastya visrabdhaṃ pathā yena tvamicchasi | mayā caivābhyanujñāto rākṣasādhipa gamyatām || 16.40 ||
"Go, O son of Pulastya, in confidence, by whatever path you wish; go now, O lord of rakshasas, with my leave."
Shloka 41 (uttara.16.41)
evamuktastu laṅkeśaḥ śambhunā svayamabravīt | prīto yadi mahādeva varaṃ me dehi yācataḥ || 16.41 ||
Thus addressed by Shambhu himself, the lord of Lanka said, "O Mahadeva, if you are pleased, grant a boon to me who now ask it."
Shloka 42 (uttara.16.42)
avadhyatvaṃ mayā prāptaṃ devagandharvadānavaiḥ | rākṣasairguhyakairnāgairye cānye balavattarāḥ || 16.42 ||
"I have already obtained invulnerability against gods, gandharvas, danavas, rakshasas, guhyakas, nagas, and whatever other powerful beings there are."
Shloka 43 (uttara.16.43)
mānuṣānna gaṇe deva svalpāste mama sammatāḥ | dīrghamāyuśca me prāptaṃ brahmaṇastripurāntaka || 16.43 ||
"Men, O god, I do not count -- in my judgment they are of little account. And I have already obtained long life from Brahma, O destroyer of Tripura."
Shloka 44 (uttara.16.44)
vāñchitaṃ cāyuṣaḥ śeṣaṃ śastraṃ tvaṃ ca prayaccha me | evamuktastatastena rāvaṇena sa śaṅkaraḥ || 16.44 ||
"Now grant me the desired remainder of lifespan, and a weapon besides." Thus addressed by Ravana, Shankara --
Shloka 45 (uttara.16.45)
dadau khaḍgaṃ mahādīptaṃ candrahāsamiti śrutam | āyuṣaścāvaśeṣaṃ ca sthitvā bhūtapatistadā || 16.45 ||
-- gave him a greatly blazing sword known as Chandrahasa, and the remainder of lifespan he desired. Then the lord of beings,
Shloka 46 (uttara.16.46)
dattvovāca tataḥ śambhurnāvajñeyamidaṃ tvayā | avajñātaṃ yadi hi te māmevaiṣyatyasaṃśayaḥ || 16.46 ||
having given these, said, "This must not be scorned by you; if it is scorned, it will surely return to me alone."
Shloka 47 (uttara.16.47)
evaṃ maheśvareṇaiva kṛtanāmā sa rāvaṇaḥ | abhivādya mahādevamārurohātha puṣpakam || 16.47 ||
Thus, having received his very name from Maheshvara himself, that Ravana, bowing to Mahadeva, then mounted the Pushpaka.
Shloka 48 (uttara.16.48)
tato mahītale rāma paryakrāmata rāvaṇaḥ | kṣatऺitrayānsumahāvīryānbādhamāna itastataḥ || 16.48 ||
Then, O Rama, Ravana roamed over the surface of the earth, harassing kshatriyas of great valour here and there.
Shloka 49 (uttara.16.49)
kecittejasvinaḥ śūrāḥ kṣatऺitrayā yuddhadurmadāḥ | tacchāsanamakurvanto vineśuḥ saparicchadāḥ || 16.49 ||
Some kshatriyas -- splendid, heroic, fierce in battle -- who would not submit to his command, perished together with their retinues.
Shloka 50 (uttara.16.50)
apare durjayaṃ rakṣo jānantaḥ prājñasammatāḥ | jitāḥ sma ityabhāṣanta rākṣasaṃ baladarpitam || 16.50 ||
Others, prudent and wise, knowing that strength-proud rakshasa to be unconquerable, would simply say, "We are defeated."
