Uttara Kanda · Sarga 30
Brahma Grants the Name Indrajit
Shloka 1 (uttara.30.1)
jite mahendre 'tibale rāvaṇasya sutena vai| prajāpatiṃ puraskṛtya yayurlaṅkāṃ surāstadā || 30.1 ||
When immensely powerful Mahendra was thus conquered by Ravana's son, the gods, placing Prajapati (Brahma) at their head, then went to Lanka.
Shloka 2 (uttara.30.2)
tatra rāvaṇamāsādya putrabhrātṛbhirāvṛtam| abravīdgagane tiṣṭhansāmapūrvaṃ prajāpatiḥ || 30.2 ||
There, approaching Ravana, surrounded by his son and brothers, Prajapati, standing in the sky, spoke to him with words of conciliation first.
Shloka 3 (uttara.30.3)
vatsa rāvaṇa tuṣṭo 'smi putrasya tava saṃyuge| aho 'sya vikramaudāryaṃ tava tulyo 'dhiko 'pi vā || 30.3 ||
"Dear Ravana, I am delighted at your son's conduct in this battle. Ah, how noble his valour — equal to yours, or even greater!
Shloka 4 (uttara.30.4)
jitaṃ hi bhavatā sarvaṃ trailokyaṃ svena tejasā| kṛtā pratijñā saphalā prīto 'smi svasutena vai || 30.4 ||
By your own splendour, the entire three worlds has indeed been conquered by you; your vow has been fulfilled — I am truly pleased with your own son.
Shloka 5 (uttara.30.5)
ayaṃ ca putro 'tibalastava rāvaṇa vīryavān| jagatīndrajidityeva parikhyāto bhaviṣyati || 30.5 ||
And this immensely powerful, valiant son of yours, O Ravana, shall henceforth be renowned throughout the world by the very name Indrajit.
Shloka 6 (uttara.30.6)
balavāndurjayaścaiva bhaviṣyatyeva rākṣasaḥ| yaṃ samāśritya te rājansthāpitāstridaśā vaśe || 30.6 ||
This rakshasa shall indeed become powerful and unconquerable — he by relying on whom, O king, you have brought the gods under your sway.
Shloka 7 (uttara.30.7)
tanmucyatāṃ mahābāho mahendraḥ pākaśāsanaḥ| kiñcāsya mokṣaṇārthāya prayacchantu divaukasaḥ || 30.7 ||
Now, O mighty-armed one, let great Indra, chastiser of Paka, be released; and let the gods grant something in return for his release."
Shloka 8 (uttara.30.8)
athābravīnmahātejā indrajitsamitiñjayaḥ| amaratvamahaṃ deva vṛṇe yadyeṣa mucyate || 30.8 ||
Then the greatly radiant Indrajit, victorious in battle, said: "O god, if he is to be released, then I choose immortality for myself.
Shloka 9 (uttara.30.9)
catuṣpadāṃ khecarāṇāmanyeṣāṃ vā mahaujasām| vṛkṣagulmakṣupalatātṛṇopalamahībhṛtām || 30.9 ||
[as is granted] among quadrupeds, sky-going creatures, or other mighty beings, among trees, shrubs, bushes, creepers, grasses, rocks and mountains —
Shloka 10 (uttara.30.10)
sarve 'pi jantavo 'nyonyaṃ bhetavye sati bibhyati| ato 'tra loke sarveṣāṃ sarvasmācca bhavedbhayam || 30.10 ||
all creatures fear one another when there is cause for fear; hence in this world there arises, for all, fear from all things."
Shloka 11 (uttara.30.11)
tato 'bravīnmahātejā meghanādaṃ prajāpatiḥ| nāsti sarvāmaratvaṃ hi kasyacitprāṇino bhuvi| catuṣpadaḥ pakṣiṇaśca bhūtānāṃ vā mahaujasām || 30.11 ||
Then the greatly radiant Prajapati said to Meghanada: "There is no such thing as complete immortality on this earth for any living being at all — not for quadrupeds, birds, or any other creatures, however mighty.
Shloka 12 (uttara.30.12)
śrutvā pitāmahenoktamindrajitprabhuṇāvyayam || 30.12 ||
Having heard this said by the imperishable Grandsire, the lord Indrajit —
Shloka 13 (uttara.30.13)
athābravītsa tatrasthaṃ meghanādo mahābalaḥ| śrūyatāṃ vā bhavetsiddhiḥ śatakratuvimokṣaṇe || 30.13 ||
then that mighty Meghanada, standing there, replied: "Then hear what boon would suit me, in exchange for the release of Shatakratu.
Shloka 14 (uttara.30.14)
mameṣṭaṃ nityaśo havyairmantraiḥ sampūjya pāvakam| saṅgrāmamavatarttuṃ ca śatrunirjayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ || 30.14 ||
It is always my practice, before I go down into battle desiring victory over the enemy, to worship the Fire-god with oblations and sacred formulas.
Shloka 15 (uttara.30.15)
aśvayukto ratho mahyamuttiṣṭhettu vibhāvasoḥ| tatsthasyāmaratā syānme eṣa me niścayo varaḥ || 30.15 ||
Should a chariot yoked with horses then arise for me out of that Fire, then, as long as I remain upon it, let immortality be mine — this is the boon I have resolved upon.
Shloka 16 (uttara.30.16)
tasminyadyasamāpte ca japyahome vibhāvasau| yudhyeyaṃ deva saṅgrāme tadā me syādvināśanam || 30.16 ||
But, O god, should I go to fight in battle while that muttered oblation to the Fire-god remains uncompleted, then in that case let my destruction follow.
Shloka 17 (uttara.30.17)
sarvo hi tapasā deva vṛṇotyamaratāṃ pumān| vikrameṇa mayā tvetadamaratvaṃ pravartitam || 30.17 ||
For, O god, every man attains immortality by austerity; but by my own valour, I have brought about this immortality of mine."
Shloka 18 (uttara.30.18)
evamastviti taṃ cāha vākyaṃ devaḥ pitāmahaḥ| muktaścendrajitā śakro gatāśca tridivaṃ surāḥ || 30.18 ||
"So be it," the god, the Grandsire, said to him in reply; and Shakra was released by Indrajit, and the gods returned to heaven.
Shloka 19 (uttara.30.19)
etasminnantare rāma dīno bhraṣṭāmbaradyutiḥ| indraścintāparītātmā dhyānatatparatāṃ gataḥ || 30.19 ||
Meanwhile, O Rama, wretched, his celestial radiance faded, Indra, his mind overcome with anxiety, sank into deep contemplation.
Shloka 20 (uttara.30.20)
taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā tathābhūtaṃ prāha devaḥ prajāpatiḥ| śatakrato kimu purā karoti sma suduṣkṛtam || 30.20 ||
Seeing him in that state, the god Prajapati said to him: "O Shatakratu, what great misdeed did you once commit?
Shloka 21 (uttara.30.21)
amarendra mayā bahvyaḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭāstathā prabho| ekavarṇāḥ samābhāṣā ekarūpāśca sarvaśaḥ || 30.21 ||
O lord of the immortals, long ago I created many creatures, O master, all of a single hue, all speaking alike, and all identical in form in every way.
Shloka 22 (uttara.30.22)
tāsāṃ nāsti viśeṣo hi darśane lakṣaṇe 'pi vā| tato 'hamekāgramanāstāḥ prajāḥ paricintayam || 30.22 ||
Among them there was no distinction, either in appearance or in feature; so, my mind fixed intently, I pondered over those creatures.
Shloka 23 (uttara.30.23)
so 'haṃ tāsāṃ viśeṣārthaṃ striyamekāṃ vinirmame| yadyatprajānāṃ pratyaṅgaṃ viśiṣṭaṃ tattaduddhṛtam || 30.23 ||
I then, for the sake of distinguishing them, fashioned a single woman; whatever was most excellent in each limb of all those creatures, that very thing was drawn out and taken.
Shloka 24 (uttara.30.24)
tato mayā rūpaguṇairahalyā strī vinirmitā| halaṃ nāmeha vairūpaṃ halyaṃ tatprabhavaṃ bhavet || 30.24 ||
Thus, with all these qualities of beauty, I fashioned the woman Ahalya — for "hala" here means "deformity", and "halya" would mean that which arises from it.
Shloka 25 (uttara.30.25)
yasmānna vidyate halyaṃ tenāhalyeti viśrutā| ahalyeti mayā śakra tasyā nāma pravartitam || 30.25 ||
Since no such deformity existed in her, she became known as Ahalya, "the one without deformity"; it was I, O Shakra, who gave her this very name.
Shloka 26 (uttara.30.26)
nirmitāyāṃ ca devendra tasyāṃ nāryāṃ surarṣabha| bhaviṣyatīti kasyaiṣā mama cintā tato 'bhavat || 30.26 ||
And once that woman was created, O lord of the gods, O bull among the immortals, I then began to wonder to whom she would belong.
Shloka 27 (uttara.30.27)
tvaṃ tu śakra tadā nārīṃ jānīṣe manasā prabho| sthānādhikatayā patnī mamaiṣeti purandara || 30.27 ||
But you, O Shakra, O lord, in your mind at that time considered — "By right of my high station, this woman shall be my own wife," O Purandara.
Shloka 28 (uttara.30.28)
sā mayā nyāsabhūtā tu gautamasya mahātmanaḥ| nyastā bahūni varṣāṇi tena niryātitā ca ha || 30.28 ||
But she was placed by me, as a trust, in the keeping of the great-souled Gautama; deposited there for many years, she was then finally given back by him.
Shloka 29 (uttara.30.29)
tatastasya parijñāya mahāsthairyaṃ mahāmuneḥ| jñātvā tapasi siddhiṃ ca patnyarthaṃ sparśitā tadā || 30.29 ||
Then, having recognized the great steadfastness of that great sage, and knowing his accomplishment in austerity, she was then given over to him, for his wife.
Shloka 30 (uttara.30.30)
saṅkruddhastvaṃ hi dharmātman gatvā tasyāśramaṃ muneḥ| dṛṣṭavāṃśca tadā tāṃ strīṃ dīptāmagniśikhāmiva || 30.30 ||
You, O righteous-souled one, enraged, went then to that sage's hermitage, and there beheld that woman, blazing like a flame of fire.
Shloka 31 (uttara.30.31)
sā tvayā dharṣitā śakra kāmārtena samanyunā| dṛṣṭastvaṃ ca tadā tena hyāśrame paramarṣiṇā || 30.31 ||
She was violated by you, O Shakra, tormented by desire and anger; and you yourself were then seen, in that very hermitage, by that supreme sage.
Shloka 32 (uttara.30.32)
tataḥ kruddhena tenā 'si śaptaḥ paramatejasā| gato 'si yena devendra daśābhāgaviparyayam || 30.32 ||
Then, enraged, that supremely radiant one cursed you, O lord of the gods, by which curse you were brought to a reversal of your very state.
Shloka 33 (uttara.30.33)
yasmānme dharṣitā patnī tvayā vāsava nirbhayam| tasmāttvaṃ samare rājañchatruhastaṃ gamiṣyasi || 30.33 ||
"Since my wife has been violated by you, O Vasava, without fear of consequence, therefore, O king, you shall one day fall into an enemy's hands in battle.
Shloka 34 (uttara.30.34)
ayaṃ tu bhāvo durbuddhe yastvayeha pravartitaḥ| mānuṣeṣvapi lokeṣu bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ || 30.34 ||
And this very impulse, O evil-minded one, which you have here set in motion, shall without doubt come to exist among human beings too.
Shloka 35 (uttara.30.35)
In that, whoever commits such an act shall bear half its guilt, and the other half shall fall upon you; and, without doubt, you shall have no fixed, lasting position.
Shloka 36 (uttara.30.36)
yaśca yaśca surendraḥ syāddhruvaḥ sa na bhaviṣyati| eṣa śāpo mayā mukta ityasau tvāṃ tadā 'bravīt || 30.36 ||
And whoever becomes lord of the gods in this way shall never be permanent in that office — this is the curse I have released upon you." Thus he spoke to you then.
Shloka 37 (uttara.30.37)
tāṃ tu bhāryāṃ sa nirbhartsya so 'bravītsumahātapāḥ| durvinīte vinidhvaṃsa mamāśramasamīpataḥ || 30.37 ||
Then, rebuking his own wife, that great ascetic said: "Depart, ill-behaved woman, away from the vicinity of my hermitage!
Shloka 38 (uttara.30.38)
rūpayauvanasampannā yasmāttvamanavasthitā| tasmādrūpavatī loke na tvamekā bhaviṣyati || 30.38 ||
Since, endowed with beauty and youth, you proved yourself inconstant, therefore you alone shall no longer be the world's one beautiful woman.
Shloka 39 (uttara.30.39)
Your beauty shall without doubt pass on to all creatures — that very beauty, relying on which alone, this present downfall has come about.
Shloka 40 (uttara.30.40)
tadāprabhṛti bhūyiṣṭhaṃ prajā rūpasamanvitāḥ| sā taṃ prasādayāmāsa maharṣiṃ gautamaṃ tadā || 30.40 ||
From that time on, creatures in great number came to possess beauty of their own. She then sought to appease that great sage Gautama —
Shloka 41 (uttara.30.41)
ajñānāddharṣitā vipra tvadrūpeṇa divaukasā| na kāmakārādviprarṣe prasādaṃ kartumarhasi || 30.41 ||
"O brahmin, I was violated unknowingly, by a god who had taken your very form; it was not of my own desire — O sage among brahmins, you should be gracious to me."
Shloka 42 (uttara.30.42)
ahalyayā tvevamuktaḥ pratyuvāca sa gautamaḥ| utpatsyati mahātejā ikṣvākūṇāṃ mahārathaḥ || 30.42 ||
Thus addressed by Ahalya, Gautama replied: "A greatly radiant one, a mighty warrior, shall be born in the line of the Ikshvakus.
Shloka 43 (uttara.30.43)
rāmo nāma śruto loke vanaṃ cāpyupayāsyati| brāhmaṇārthe mahābāhurviṣṇurmānuṣavigrahaḥ| taṃ drakṣyasi yadā bhadre tataḥ pūtā bhaviṣyasi || 30.43 ||
Renowned in the world by the name Rama, he shall come even to the forest — mighty-armed Vishnu himself, in human form, for the sake of the brahmins. When you behold him, good lady, you shall then become purified.
Shloka 44 (uttara.30.44)
sa hi pāvayituṃ śaktastvayā yadduṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam| tasyātithyaṃ ca kṛtvā vai matsamīpaṃ gamiṣyasi || 30.44 ||
For he alone is able to purify that sin which was committed through you; and, having offered him hospitality, you shall then come to me.
Shloka 45 (uttara.30.45)
vatsyasi tvaṃ mayā sārdhaṃ tadā hi varavarṇini| evamuktvā sa viprarṣirājagāma svamāśramam || 30.45 ||
Then, O lovely one, you shall dwell together with me again." Having said this, that sage among brahmins returned to his own hermitage.
Shloka 46 (uttara.30.46)
tapaścācāra sumahatsā patnī brahmavādinaḥ| śāpotsargāddhi tasyedaṃ muneḥ sarvamupasthitam || 30.46 ||
And that wife of the sage learned in the Vedas thereafter performed the greatest austerity — for all this had come to pass through the release of that sage's curse.
Shloka 47 (uttara.30.47)
tatsmara tvaṃ mahābāho duṣkṛtaṃ yattvayā kṛtam| tena tvaṃ grahaṇaṃ śatroryāto nānyena vāsava || 30.47 ||
Remember then, O mighty-armed one, that misdeed which you committed; it was through that alone, O Vasava, and by no other cause, that you fell into the enemy's grasp.
Shloka 48 (uttara.30.48)
śīghraṃ vai yaja yajñaṃ tvaṃ vaiṣṇavaṃ susamāhitaḥ| pāvitastena yajñena yāsyase tridivaṃ tataḥ || 30.48 ||
Quickly now, with full concentration, perform the sacrifice to Vishnu; purified by that sacrifice, you shall then go on to heaven.
Shloka 49 (uttara.30.49)
putraśca tava devendra na vinaṣṭo mahāraṇe| nītaḥ sannihitaścaiva āryakeṇa mahodadhau || 30.49 ||
And your son, O lord of the gods, was not destroyed in that great battle; he was taken away and kept safe by his grandfather in the great ocean.
Shloka 50 (uttara.30.50)
etacchrutvā mahendrastu yajñamiṣṭvā ca vaiṣṇavam| punastridivamākrāmadanvaśāsacca devarāṭ || 30.50 ||
Hearing this, great Indra performed the Vaishnava sacrifice, and once again ascended to heaven, and, as king of the gods, ruled over them.
Shloka 51 (uttara.30.51)
etadindrajito nāma balaṃ yatkīrtitaṃ mayā| nirjitastena devendraḥ prāṇino 'nye tu kiṃ punaḥ || 30.51 ||
This, then, is that might of Indrajit which I have recounted to you; by him even great Indra, lord of the gods, was vanquished — what then of other beings?
Shloka 52 (uttara.30.52)
āścaryamiti rāmaśca lakṣmaṇaścābravīttadā| agastyavacanaṃ śrutvā vānarā rākṣasāstadā || 30.52 ||
"How wondrous!" said Rama and Lakshmana at that; and, hearing Agastya's words, the monkeys and rakshasas too, then —
Shloka 53 (uttara.30.53)
vibhīṣaṇastu rāmasya pārśvastho vākyamabravīt| āścaryaṃ smārito 'smyadya yattaddṛṣṭaṃ purātanam || 30.53 ||
Vibhishana too, standing beside Rama, spoke: "I am reminded today of a wonder which I myself witnessed long ago."
Shloka 54 (uttara.30.54)
agastyaṃ tvabravīdrāmaḥ satyametacchrutaṃ ca me || 30.54 ||
But Rama said to Agastya: "This is true; and I too have heard of it."
Shloka 55 (uttara.30.55)
evaṃ rāma samudbhūto rāvaṇo lokakaṇṭakaḥ| saputro yena saṅgrāme jitaḥ śakraḥ sureśvaraḥ || 30.55 ||
Thus, O Rama, was Ravana born, that thorn in the side of the world, by whom, together with his son, Shakra, lord of the gods, was conquered in battle.
