Sarga 81All sargasSarga 83

Shloka 1 (yuddha.82.1)

śrutvā taṃ bhīmanirhrādaṃ śakrāśanisamasvanam | vīkṣamāṇā diśaḥ sarvā dudruvurvānararṣabhāḥ || 82.1 ||

Hearing that terrifying roar, like the crash of Indra's thunderbolt, the foremost monkeys, glancing about in every direction, fled.

Shloka 2 (yuddha.82.2)

tānuvāca tataḥ sarvānhanūmānmārutātmajaḥ | viṣaṇṇavadanāndīnāṃstrastānvidravataḥ pṛthak || 82.2 ||

Then Hanuman, son of the Wind, spoke to all of them — dejected, wretched, terrified, and scattering in every direction.

Shloka 3 (yuddha.82.3)

kasmādviṣaṇṇavadanā vidravadhvaṃ plavaṅgamāḥ | tyaktayuddhasamutsāhāḥ śūratvaṃ kva nu vo gatam || 82.3 ||

"O monkeys, why do you flee with dejected faces, having abandoned your zeal for battle? Where has your valor gone?

Shloka 4 (yuddha.82.4)

pṛṣṭhato'nuvrajadhvaṃ māmagrato yāntamāhave | śūrairabhijanopetairayuktaṃ hi nivartitum || 82.4 ||

Follow close behind me as I go forth into battle; it is unbecoming for the valiant born of noble lineage to turn back."

Shloka 5 (yuddha.82.5)

evamuktāḥ susaṅkruddhā vāyuputreṇa dhīmatā | śailaśṛṅgāndrumāṃścaiva jagṛhurhṛṣṭamānasāḥ || 82.5 ||

Thus addressed by the wise son of the Wind, and greatly roused to fury, they seized mountain-peaks and trees, their hearts now joyful.

Shloka 6 (yuddha.82.6)

abhipetuśca garjanto rākṣasānvānararṣabhāḥ | parivārya hanūmantamanvayuśca mahāhave || 82.6 ||

Roaring, the foremost monkeys fell upon the rakshasas, surrounding Hanuman and following him into that great battle.

Shloka 7 (yuddha.82.7)

sa tairvānaramukhyaistu hanūmānsarvato vṛtaḥ | hutāśana ivārciṣmānadahacchatruvāhinīm || 82.7 ||

Hanuman, surrounded on all sides by those chief monkeys, blazed like a flaming fire, consuming the enemy's army.

Shloka 8 (yuddha.82.8)

sa rākṣasānāṃ kadanaṃ cakāra sumahākapiḥ | vṛto vānarasainyena kālāntakayamopamaḥ || 82.8 ||

That great monkey, surrounded by the monkey army, brought slaughter upon the rakshasas, like Yama, the ender, at the time of universal dissolution.

Shloka 9 (yuddha.82.9)

sa tu śokena cāviṣṭaḥ krodhena ca mahākapiḥ | hanūmānrāvaṇirathe mahatīṃ pātayacchilām || 82.9 ||

Filled with grief and rage, that great monkey Hanuman hurled a huge rock at Ravani's chariot.

Shloka 10 (yuddha.82.10)

tāmāpatantīṃ dṛṣṭvaiva rathaḥ sārathinā tadā | vidheyāśva samāyuktaḥ sudūramapavāhitaḥ || 82.10 ||

The moment it saw the rock rushing toward it, the charioteer, whose obedient horses were yoked, drove the chariot far away.

Shloka 11 (yuddha.82.11)

tamindrajitamaprāpya rathasthaṃ sahasārathim | viveśa dharaṇīṃ bhittvā sā śilāvyarthamudyatā || 82.11 ||

Failing to reach Indrajit, seated on his chariot with his charioteer, that rock, hurled in vain, split the earth and buried itself within it.

Shloka 12 (yuddha.82.12)

patitāyāṃ śilāyāṃ tu rakṣasāṃ vyathitā camūḥ | nipatantyā ca śilayā rākṣasā mathitā bhṛśam || 82.12 ||

Yet as that rock fell, the rakshasa army was thrown into panic, and many demons were badly crushed by its fall.

Shloka 13 (yuddha.82.13)

tamabhyadhāvañśataśo nadantaḥ kānanaukasaḥ | te drumāṃśca mahākāyā giriśṛṅgāṇi codyatāḥ || 82.13 ||

Roaring, those huge-bodied forest-dwellers charged at him by the hundreds, lifting up trees and mountain-peaks.

Shloka 14 (yuddha.82.14)

kṣipantīndrajitaṃ saṃkhye vānarā bhīmavikramāḥ | vṛkṣaśailamahāvarṣaṃ visṛjantaḥ plavaṃgamāḥ || 82.14 ||

The monkeys of terrible prowess hurled themselves at Indrajit in that battle, raining down a great deluge of trees and boulders.

Shloka 15 (yuddha.82.15)

śatrūṇāṃ kadanaṃ cakrurneduśca vividhaiḥ svanaiḥ | vānaraistairmahābhīmairghorarūpā niśācarāḥ || 82.15 ||

They wrought havoc among the enemy, roaring in many kinds of cries; and those hideous night-roaming demons, struck by those terrifying monkeys—

Shloka 16 (yuddha.82.16)

vīryādabhihatā vṛkṣairvyaceṣṭanta raṇakṣitau | svasainyamabhivīkṣyātha vānarārditamindrajit || 82.16 ||

—struck with force by trees, writhed upon the battlefield. Then Indrajit, seeing his own army tormented by the monkeys,

Shloka 17 (yuddha.82.17)

pragṛhītāyudhaḥ kruddhaḥ parānabhimukho yayau | sa śaraughānavasṛjan svasainyenābhisaṃvṛtaḥ || 82.17 ||

seized his weapons in fury and advanced against the foe; surrounded by his own troops, he loosed a torrent of arrows.

Shloka 18 (yuddha.82.18)

jaghāna kapiśārdūlān subahūn dṛḍhavikramaḥ | śūlairaśanibhiḥ khaḍgaiḥ paṭṭiśaiḥ śūlamudgaraiḥ || 82.18 ||

That firm-fortitude Indrajit slew a great many of the mightiest monkeys, with tridents, thunderbolt-tipped darts, swords, spears, and spiked maces.

Shloka 19 (yuddha.82.19)

te cāpyanucarāṃstasya vānarā jaghnurāhave | suskandhaviṭapaiḥ śailaiḥ śilābhiśca mahābalāḥ || 82.19 ||

And in turn, those mighty monkeys slew his followers in battle, with the trunks and branches of trees, with mountain-slabs and rocks.

Shloka 20 (yuddha.82.20)

hanūmān kadanaṃ cakre rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām | saṃnivārya parānīkamabravīt tān vanaukasaḥ || 82.20 ||

Hanuman wrought havoc among the demons of terrible deeds; then, holding back the enemy ranks, he spoke to those monkeys:

Shloka 21 (yuddha.82.21)

hanūmān saṃnivartadhvaṃ na naḥ sādhyamidaṃ balam | tyaktvā prāṇān viceṣṭanto rāmapriyacikīrṣavaḥ || 82.21 ||

"Retreat! This army is not ours to conquer any further." — striving with all their might, risking their very lives, wishing only to please Rama,

Shloka 22 (yuddha.82.22)

yannimittaṃ hi yudhyāmo hatā sā janakātmajā | imamarthaṃ hi vijñāpya rāmaṃ sugrīvameva ca || 82.22 ||

"That Sita, daughter of Janaka, for whose sake we fight, has been killed. Let us report this matter to Rama and to Sugriva—

Shloka 23 (yuddha.82.23)

tau yat pratividhāsyete tat kariṣyāmahe vayam | ityuktvā vānaraśreṣṭho vārayan sarvavānarān || 82.23 ||

"—and we shall then do whatever the two of them decide." So saying, that foremost of monkeys, restraining all the monkeys,

Shloka 24 (yuddha.82.24)

śanaiḥ śanairasaṃtrastaḥ sabalaḥ saṃnyavartata | tataḥ prekṣya hanūmantaṃ vrajantaṃ yatra rāghavaḥ || 82.24 ||

withdrew slowly and steadily, unafraid, together with his troops. Then, seeing Hanuman withdrawing toward where Rama was,

Shloka 25 (yuddha.82.25)

sa hotukāmo duṣṭātmā gataścaityaṃ nikumbhilām | nikumbhilāmadhiṣṭhāya pāvakaṃ juhavendrajit || 82.25 ||

that evil-souled Indrajit, wishing to perform the oblation, went to the sanctuary of Nikumbhila; and having arrived there, he began to pour oblations into the fire.

Shloka 26 (yuddha.82.26)

yajñabhūmyāṃ tato gatvā pāvakastena rakṣasā | hūyamānaḥ prajajvāla homaśoṇitabhuk tadā || 82.26 ||

There, on that sacrificial ground, propitiated by that demon, the fire blazed up, consuming the oblations of flesh and blood.

Shloka 27 (yuddha.82.27)

sārciḥpinaddho dadṛśe homaśoṇitatarpitaḥ | saṃdhyāgata ivādityaḥ sutīvro'gniḥ samutthitaḥ || 82.27 ||

Wreathed in its own flame, gorged with the blood-oblation, that fierce fire rose up, appearing like the sun at evening twilight.

Shloka 28 (yuddha.82.28)

athendrajid rākṣasabhūtaye tu juhāva havyaṃ vidhinā vidhānavit | dṛṣṭvā vyatiṣṭhanta ca rākṣasāste mahāsamūheṣu nayānayajñāḥ || 82.28 ||

Then Indrajit, skilled in ritual procedure, offered oblations according to scriptural rite for the welfare of the rakshasas; and seeing this, those demons, versed in the wisdom of policy in great battles, stood firm in their massed ranks.
