Shloka 1 (yuddha.99.1)

mahodaramahāpārśvau hatau dṛṣṭvā sa rāvaṇaḥ| tasmiṃśca nihate vīre virūpākṣe mahābale || 99.1 ||

Seeing both Mahodara and Mahaparshva slain, and the mighty hero Virupaksha likewise struck down,

Shloka 2 (yuddha.99.2)

āviveśa mahān krodho rāvaṇaṃ tu mahāmṛdhe| sūtaṃ saṃcodayāmāsa vākyaṃ cedamuvāca ha || 99.2 ||

great anger overwhelmed Ravana in that mighty battle. He urged his charioteer onward and spoke these words:

Shloka 3 (yuddha.99.3)

nihatānāmamātyānāṃ ruddhasya nagarasya ca| duḥkhamevāpaneṣyāmi hatvā tau rāmalakṣmaṇau || 99.3 ||

"By killing Rama and Lakshmana, I shall remove this grief for my slain ministers and my besieged city."

Shloka 4 (yuddha.99.4)

rāmavṛkṣaṃ raṇe hanmi sītāpuṣpaphalapradam| praśākhā yasya sugrīvo jāmbavān kumudo nalaḥ || 99.4 ||

"In battle I shall cut down the tree that is Rama, which is to bear the fruit and flower named Sita — a tree whose great boughs are Sugriva, Jambavan, Kumuda, and Nala,

Shloka 5 (yuddha.99.5)

dvividaścaiva maindaśca aṅgado gandhamādanaḥ| hanūmāṃśca suṣeṇaśca sarve ca hariyūthapāḥ || 99.5 ||

and Dvivida, Mainda, Angada, Gandhamadana, Hanuman, Sushena, and all the monkey chieftains besides."

Shloka 6 (yuddha.99.6)

sa diśo daśa ghoṣeṇa rathasyātiratho mahān| nādayan prayayau tūrṇaṃ rāghavaṃ cābhyadhāvata || 99.6 ||

That mighty champion of the chariot advanced, filling all ten directions with the thunder of his chariot, and charged swiftly toward Raghava.

Shloka 7 (yuddha.99.7)

pūritā tena śabdena sanadīgirikānanā| saṃcacāla mahī sarvā trastasiṃhamṛgadvijā || 99.7 ||

Filled with that sound, the whole earth, with its rivers, mountains, and forests, shook, and lions, deer, and birds were struck with terror.

Shloka 8 (yuddha.99.8)

tāmasaṃ sumahāghoraṃ cakārāstraṃ sudāruṇam| nirdadāha kapīn sarvāṃste prapetuḥ samantataḥ || 99.8 ||

He unleashed the most terrible and dreadful Tamasa missile, which scorched all the monkeys, and they fell down on every side.

Shloka 9 (yuddha.99.9)

utpapāta rajo bhūmau tairbhagnaiḥ sampradhāvitaiḥ| nahi tat sahituṃ śekurbrahmaṇā nirmitaṃ svayam || 99.9 ||

Dust rose from the ground as they, broken, fled in every direction; they could not withstand that weapon, fashioned by Brahma himself.

Shloka 10 (yuddha.99.10)

tānyanīkānyanekāni rāvaṇasya śarottamaiḥ| dṛṣṭvā bhagnāni śataśo rāghavaḥ paryavasthitaḥ || 99.10 ||

Seeing his many hosts broken by the hundreds under Ravana's excellent arrows, Raghava stood his ground, firmly resolved.

Shloka 11 (yuddha.99.11)

That tiger among rakshasas, having scattered the army of monkeys, then beheld Rama standing there unconquered,

Shloka 12 (yuddha.99.12)

lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā viṣṇunā vāsavaṃ yathā| ālikhantamivākāśamavaṣṭabhya mahad dhanuḥ || 99.12 ||

together with his brother Lakshmana, as Indra stands with Vishnu, grasping his great bow as if tracing a line across the very sky.

Shloka 13 (yuddha.99.13)

padmapatraviśālākṣaṃ dīrghabāhumariṃdamam| tato rāmo mahātejāḥ saumitrisahito balī || 99.13 ||

Then Rama, wide-eyed as a lotus petal, long-armed, the tamer of foes, mighty and full of splendour, together with Saumitri,

Shloka 14 (yuddha.99.14)

vānarāṃśca raṇe bhagnānāpatantaṃ ca rāvaṇam| samīkṣya rāghavo hṛṣṭo madhye jagrāha kārmukam || 99.14 ||

seeing the monkeys broken in the fight and Ravana bearing down upon him, gripped his bow firmly by the middle, his heart glad.

Shloka 15 (yuddha.99.15)

visphārayitumārebhe tataḥ sa dhanuruttamam| mahāvegaṃ mahānādaṃ nirbhindanniva medinīm || 99.15 ||

Then he began to draw that excellent bow, so swift and thunderous, its twang as though it would cleave the very earth.

Shloka 16 (yuddha.99.16)

rāvaṇasya ca bāṇaughai rāmavisphāritena ca| śabdena rākṣasāstena petuśca śataśastadā || 99.16 ||

By the flood of Ravana's arrows, and by the very sound of Rama's bow-twang, hundreds of rakshasas fell dead at that instant.

Shloka 17 (yuddha.99.17)

tayoḥ śarapathaṃ prāpya rāvaṇo rājaputrayoḥ| sa babhau ca yathā rāhuḥ samīpe śaśisūryayoḥ || 99.17 ||

Coming within range of the two princes' arrows, Ravana appeared there like Rahu drawing near to the moon and the sun.

Shloka 18 (yuddha.99.18)

tamicchan prathamaṃ yoddhuṃ lakṣmaṇo niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ| mumoca dhanurāyamya śarānagniśikhopamān || 99.18 ||

Eager to be the first to fight him, Lakshmana drew his bow and loosed sharp arrows, like tongues of flame.

Shloka 19 (yuddha.99.19)

tān muktamātrānākāśe lakṣmaṇena dhanuṣmatā| bāṇān bāṇairmahātejā rāvaṇaḥ pratyavārayat || 99.19 ||

The moment they were loosed by the bow-bearing Lakshmana, the mighty and splendid Ravana checked those arrows in the sky with his own.

Shloka 20 (yuddha.99.20)

ekamekena bāṇena tribhistrīn daśabhirdaśa| lakṣmaṇasya praciccheda darśayan pāṇilāghavam || 99.20 ||

Displaying the deftness of his hand, he split Lakshmana's arrows one for one, three for three, and ten for ten.

Shloka 21 (yuddha.99.21)

abhyatikramya saumitriṃ rāvaṇaḥ samitiṃjayaḥ| āsasāda raṇe rāmaṃ sthitaṃ śailamivāparam || 99.21 ||

Then, passing beyond Saumitri, Ravana, ever victorious in battle, came up in that field to Rama, who stood like another mountain.

Shloka 22 (yuddha.99.22)

sa rāghavaṃ samāsādya krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ| vyasṛjaccharavarṣāṇi rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ || 99.22 ||

Drawing near to Raghava, Ravana, lord of rakshasas, his eyes red with fury, loosed torrents of arrows.

Shloka 23 (yuddha.99.23)

śaradhārāstato rāmo rāvaṇasya dhanuścyutāḥ| dṛṣṭvaivāpatitāḥ śīghraṃ bhallāñjagrāha satvaram || 99.23 ||

The instant Rama saw those streams of arrows loosed from Ravana's bow bearing down on him, he swiftly seized his broad-headed shafts.

Shloka 24 (yuddha.99.24)

tāñcharaughāṃstato bhallaistīkṣṇaiściccheda rāghavaḥ| dīpyamānān mahāghorāñcharānāśīviṣopamān || 99.24 ||

Then, with his sharp broad-headed shafts, Raghava cut to pieces that blazing, dreadful mass of arrows, which were like venomous serpents.

Shloka 25 (yuddha.99.25)

rāghavo rāvaṇaṃ tūrṇaṃ rāvaṇo rāghavaṃ tathā| anyonyaṃ vividhaistīkṣṇaiḥ śaravarṣairvavarṣatuḥ || 99.25 ||

Raghava upon Ravana, and Ravana upon Raghava alike, both swiftly rained upon each other showers of sharp arrows of every kind.

Shloka 26 (yuddha.99.26)

ceratuśca ciraṃ citraṃ maṇḍalaṃ savyadakṣiṇam| bāṇavegāt samutkṣiptāvanyonyamaparājitau || 99.26 ||

For a long time, both unconquered, they circled about in intricate patterns, left and right, each hurled about by the force of the other's arrows.

Shloka 27 (yuddha.99.27)

tayorbhūtāni vitresuryugapat samprayudhyatoḥ| raudrayoḥ sāyakamucoryamāntakanikāśayoḥ || 99.27 ||

As those two terrible ones, loosing their arrows together, fought on — the very likeness of Yama and Death — all beings trembled.

Shloka 28 (yuddha.99.28)

satataṃ vividhairbāṇairbabhūva gaganaṃ tadā| ghanairivātapāpāye vidyunmālāsamākulaiḥ || 99.28 ||

The sky then grew thick with a ceaseless rain of arrows of every kind, as it fills with clouds strung with garlands of lightning at the ending of the rains.

Shloka 29 (yuddha.99.29)

gavākṣitamivākāśaṃ babhūva śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ| mahāvegaiḥ sutīkṣṇāgrairgṛdhrapatraiḥ suvājitaiḥ || 99.29 ||

The sky seemed pierced through with lattice-windows by that shower of arrows — swift, keen-pointed, well-fledged with vulture feathers.

Shloka 30 (yuddha.99.30)

śarāndhakāramākāśaṃ cakratuḥ paramaṃ tadā| gate'staṃ tapane cāpi mahāmeghāvivotthitau || 99.30 ||

Between them they made the sky utterly dark with arrows, as though, though the sun had already set, two great storm-clouds had risen up.

Shloka 31 (yuddha.99.31)

tayorabhūnmahāyuddhamanyonyavadhakāṃkṣiṇoḥ| anāsādyamacintyaṃ ca vṛtravāsavayoriva || 99.31 ||

Between those two, each bent upon the other's death, there raged a great battle, unapproachable and beyond imagining, like the duel of Vritra and Indra.

Shloka 32 (yuddha.99.32)

ubhau hi parameṣvāsāvubhau yuddhaviśāradau| ubhāvastravidāṃ mukhyāvubhau yuddhe viceratuḥ || 99.32 ||

Both were supreme archers, both were masters of war, both were foremost among the knowers of weapon-lore, and both ranged freely across that field of battle.

Shloka 33 (yuddha.99.33)

ubhau hi yena vrajatastena tena śarormayaḥ| ūrmayo vāyunā viddhā jagmuḥ sāgarayoriva || 99.33 ||

Wherever the two of them advanced, in that same direction the waves of their arrows went, like the waves of two oceans driven by the wind.

Shloka 34 (yuddha.99.34)

tataḥ saṃsaktahastastu rāvaṇo lokarāvaṇaḥ| nārācamālāṃ rāmasya lalāṭe pratyamuñcata || 99.34 ||

Then Ravana, who makes the whole world weep, his hand never pausing, loosed a garland of iron shafts full upon Rama's brow.

Shloka 35 (yuddha.99.35)

raudracāpaprayuktāṃ tāṃ nīlotpaladalaprabhām| śirasādhārayad rāmo na vyathāmabhyapadyata || 99.35 ||

That shaft-garland, loosed from his terrible bow, gleaming like the petals of a blue lotus, Rama bore upon his head, yet felt no pain from it.

Shloka 36 (yuddha.99.36)

atha mantrānapi japan raudramastramudīrayan| śarān bhūyaḥ samādāya rāmaḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ || 99.36 ||

Then, murmuring sacred syllables and invoking the Raudra missile, Rama, filled with anger, took up further arrows,

Shloka 37 (yuddha.99.37)

mumoca ca mahātejāścāpamāyamya vīryavān| tān śarān rākṣasendrāya cikṣepācchinnasāyakaḥ || 99.37 ||

and, drawing his bow, that mighty and radiant one loosed them at the lord of rakshasas, his stream of arrows never broken.

Shloka 38 (yuddha.99.38)

But falling upon the armour, dark as a great storm-cloud, of that rakshasa lord who could not be slain, those arrows caused him no distress at all.

Shloka 39 (yuddha.99.39)

punarevātha taṃ rāmo rathasthaṃ rākṣasādhipam| lalāṭe paramāstreṇa sarvāstrakuśalo'bhinat || 99.39 ||

Then Rama, skilled in the use of every weapon, once again struck that lord of rakshasas, seated on his chariot, on the forehead with a supreme missile.

Shloka 40 (yuddha.99.40)

te bhittvā bāṇarūpāṇi pañcaśīrṣā ivoragāḥ| śvasanto viviśurbhūmiṃ rāvaṇapratikūlitāḥ || 99.40 ||

Having pierced through the shape of his arrows, those shafts, turned aside by Ravana, plunged hissing into the earth like five-hooded serpents.

Shloka 41 (yuddha.99.41)

nihatya rāghavasyāstraṃ rāvaṇaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ| āsuraṃ sumahāghoramastraṃ prāduścakāra saḥ || 99.41 ||

Having thwarted Raghava's missile, Ravana, senseless with rage, then brought forth the most terrible Asura weapon.

Shloka 42 (yuddha.99.42)

siṃhavyāghramukhāṃścāpi kaṅkakokamukhānapi| gṛdhraśyenamukhāṃścāpi śṛgālavadanāṃstathā || 99.42 ||

From it poured arrows with the faces of lions and tigers, of herons and wolves, of vultures and falcons, and of jackals,

Shloka 43 (yuddha.99.43)

īhāmṛgamukhāṃścāpi vyāditāsyān bhayāvahān| pañcāsyā~llelihānāṃśca sasarja niśitān śarān || 99.43 ||

and with the faces of wild deer, mouths gaping wide and terrible to see, and sharp shafts with five licking, flickering faces,

Shloka 44 (yuddha.99.44)

śarān kharamukhāṃścānyān varāhamukhasaṃśritān| śvānakukkuṭavaktrāṃśca makarāśīviṣānanān || 99.44 ||

and yet others with the faces of asses, of boars, of dogs and cocks, and of crocodiles and venomous serpents.

Shloka 45 (yuddha.99.45)

etāṃścānyāṃśca māyābhiḥ sasarja niśitāñcharān| rāmaṃ prati mahātejāḥ kruddhaḥ sarpa iva śvasan || 99.45 ||

That mighty and blazing rakshasa, hissing like an angered serpent, loosed these and other sharp arrows at Rama through his sorcery.

Shloka 46 (yuddha.99.46)

āsureṇa samāviṣṭaḥ so'streṇa raghupuṅgavaḥ| sasarjāstraṃ mahotsāhaṃ pāvakaṃ pāvakopamaḥ || 99.46 ||

Enveloped by that Asura missile, the foremost of the Raghus, himself blazing like fire, then released the mighty and vigorous Fire missile,

Shloka 47 (yuddha.99.47)

agnidīptamukhān bāṇāṃstatra sūryamukhānapi| candrārdhacandravaktrāṃśca dhūmaketumukhānapi| grahanakṣatravarṇāṃśca maholkāmukhasaṃsthitān || 99.47 ||

from which came arrows with mouths blazing like fire, others with faces like the sun, the moon and the crescent moon, comet-faced ones, arrows coloured like planets and stars, tipped in the likeness of a great meteor,

Shloka 48 (yuddha.99.48)

vidyujjihvopamāṃścāpi sasarja vividhāñcharān| te rāvaṇaśarā ghorā rāghavāstrasamāhatāḥ || 99.48 ||

and arrows like tongues of lightning, of every kind. Ravana's dreadful shafts, struck by Raghava's missile,

Shloka 49 (yuddha.99.49)

vilayaṃ jagmurākāśe jaghnuścaiva sahasraśaḥ| tadastraṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmeṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā || 99.49 ||

vanished into nothingness in the sky and were shattered by the thousand. Seeing that missile destroyed by Rama, whose deeds are ever unwearied,

Shloka 50 (yuddha.99.50)

hṛṣṭā nedustataḥ sarve kapayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ| sugrīvābhimukhā vīrāḥ samparikṣipya rāghavam || 99.50 ||

all those monkey-heroes, who could take any form at will, roared aloud in joy, and, ringing Raghava about, turned their faces toward Sugriva.

Shloka 51 (yuddha.99.51)

tatastadastraṃ vinihatya rāghavaḥ prasahya tad rāvaṇabāhuniḥsṛtam| mudānvito dāśarathirmahātmā vineduruccairmuditāḥ kapīśvarāḥ || 99.51 ||

Having thus forcibly destroyed that missile which had issued from Ravana's own arms, the great-souled son of Dasharatha was filled with joy, and the delighted lords of monkeys roared out loudly.
